Taking racing coverage to the edge!

Zack Tate: Arizonan Wins Midwest Madness Title

Zack Tate: Arizonan Wins Midwest Madness Title

IMCA hobby stock driver Zack Tate put his hometown of Coolidge, Arizona, on the map. He did so by earning the Midwest Madness Tour title.

A suburb of Phoenix, Coolidge is best known for producing musicians such as Duane Eddy, Waylon Jennings, and Sammi Smith. However, Tate rocks to a different tune — the one of the V8 under the hood of his hobby stock. The 39-year-old earns a living as a liquid waste foreman for the City of Coolidge. Tate proudly represents Coolidge as a racer, even if that means driving 1,500 miles to Worthington Speedway in Minnesota, the first venue for five consecutive nights of racing.

“We drove straight through the first night, it took us 24 hours to get to Minnesota,” said Tate. “It was me; my wife, April; and my 11-year-old daughter, Makenzy. It was me and my wife taking turns driving.”

The Midwest Madness Tour consists of five tracks across five nights:

  • Sunday, June 26: Worthington Speedway
  • Monday, June 27: Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, Iowa
  • Tuesday, June 28: Buena Vista Raceway in Alta, Iowa
  • Wednesday, June 29: Shelby County Speedway in Harlan, Iowa
  • Thursday, June 30: Stuart International Speedway in Iowa

“It was my first time racing at every track,” Tate said. “It was very hard, very humbling. One of those tracks, Buena Vista Raceway, was the first time I ever ran a half-mile. That’s the fastest I’ve ever gone in my life.”

To win the tour title, he had to beat some of the top IMCA hobby stock drivers not only in the Midwest, but the entire country.

“My best finish was third [at Stuart International Speedway],” said Tate. “We actually led with four to five to go. I jumped the cushion just a little bit and caught the wall with my back bumper. I got passed by [Brandon] Cox and [Eric] Stanton. My heart was hurting, because I fell back to third, but these guys are champions.”

Zack Tate finished his week with some more racing at a pair of Iowa tracks — Marshalltown Speedway and Boone Speedway — before picking up a new car from Charger Chassis. When he went home, the city of Coolidge proudly bragged about their hometown hero.

“The City finance director sent an email to everyone in the City [government] that said, ‘Hey, you guys check this out, make sure you tell him congratulations,’” Tate said. “Everybody at my City employment job was super ecstatic about it. It was a blessing when I got home.”

Clay County Frost Buster win is IMCA Stock Car first for Fett

Hobby Stock , Modified , Northern SportMod , Results , Sport Compact , Stock Car

imca midwest madness tour

SPENCER, Iowa (April 15, 2024) – Just how exciting was the finish of the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car feature Monday at Clay County Fair Speedway?

Winner Colby Fett had watched the replay on IMCA.TV three times and was still searching for all the right words to describe it the next morning.

“I had tested one of Kelly Shryock’s cars a couple years ago but this was my first official real go race, go for it night in a Stock Car,” said Fett. “We put some older stuff on (all four tires dated from last year) and went out to put on some laps. We wanted to finish in the top 10 and bring the car home in one piece.”

Wheeling the B & B Skyrocket piloted last season by Troy Swearingen, Fett ran third in his heat and started the main event outside row four.

“I had to get by some really good guys to get to the front. To pass Jeffrey Larson was a big deal. I have a lot of respect for all the Larsons and when I went around the outside I thought ‘What the heck?’” he said. “There were four restarts while I was leading and that was probably the most nervous I’ve been racing.”

“I ran the top most of the way but when I saw Kelly I moved more to the middle,” Fett continued. “I was just happy to lead some laps, then the checkers came out and it took a few seconds to realize I’d won.”

Tim Rupp and the 11 th  starting Shryock crossed the stripe virtually side-by-side behind him. Hard charger Derek Green drove from 25 th  starting to fourth and Austin Brands was fifth.

“I beat some pretty good guys. I was still nervous watching the replay of the race,” admitted Fett, who earned $750 while becoming B & B Racing Chassis All Star Invitational qualifying eligible.

“The biggest thing about this was that I lost my grandmothers Veronica Parsons in December and Lucy DeRoos last July. I think being able to jump into a Stock Car the first night and win shows that they’re still with us.”

Much accomplished in a Friesen Performance IMCA Northern SportMod and the 2023 track champion at Spencer in that class, Fett plans to race both divisions at Kossuth County Speedway, Hancock County Speedway and Spencer.

A racing vacation to California may also be in the works.

“It’s going to be a busy season,” promised Fett.

Also winning Monday night at Clay County were Tim Ward in the Friesen Performance IMCA Modifieds, Mike Smith in the IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks, Justin Klynsma in the Northern SportMods and Oliver Monson in the Mach-1 IMCA Sport Compacts.
