Known as one of the finest pianists of the past 60 years,  Eddie Palmieri  is a bandleader, arranger and composer of salsa and Latin jazz. His playing skillfully fuses the rhythm of his Puerto Rican heritage with the complexity of his jazz influences: Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner as well as his older brother, Charlie Palmieri.

Palmieri’s parents emigrated from Ponce, Puerto Rico to New York City in 1926. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in the Bronx, Palmieri learned to play the piano at an early age, and at 13, he joined his uncle’s orchestra, playing timbales.

Palmieri’s professional career as a pianist took off with various bands in the early 1950s including Eddie Forrester, Johnny Segui’s, and the popular Tito Rodriguez Orchestra. In 1961, Palmieri formed his own band, La Perfecta, which featured an unconventional front line of trombones rather than the trumpets customary in Latin orchestras. This created an innovative sound that mixed American jazz into Afro-Caribbean rhythms, surprising critics and fans alike. Palmieri disbanded La Perfecta in 1968 to pursue different musical endeavors, though he would return to the band’s music in the 2000s.

Palmieri perfected his arranging skills in the 1970’s releasing several impressive recordings that reflected his unorthodox approach to music. His unconventional style would once again surprise critics and fans with the 1970 release entitled “Harlem River Drive.” This recording was the first to merge what were categorized as “Black” and “Latin” music into a free-form sound that encompassed elements of salsa, funk, soul and jazz. In 1975, Palmieri won the first-ever Grammy for Best Latin Recording for The Sun of Latin Music (he’s won ten Grammys altogether to date), including two for his influential recording with Tito Puente, Obra Maestra/Masterpiece.

Recognizing Palmieri as an American icon, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, recorded two of Palmieri’s performances for its archives in 1988. Because of Palmieri’s proclivity for creating music in funk Latin style, Little Louie Vega invited him to record on Nuyorican Soul (1997), a release that became very popular in the house and underground music scenes.

In addition to the Grammys, Palmieri has received numerous honors: Eubie Blake Award (1991); Most Exciting Latin Performance, presented by the BBC in London (2002); Yale University’s Chubb Fellowship, usually reserved for international heads of state, but given to Palmieri in recognition of his work building communities through music (2002); Harlem Renaissance Award (2005); Jay McShann Lifetime Achievement Award (2008), induction into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame (2008). A year later, the Library of Congress added Palmieri’s composition “Azucar Pa’ Ti” to the National Recording Registry, which at the time only included 300 compositions documenting the history of all of recorded music history in the U.S. With his widely popular eight-and-a-half minute “Azucar Pa’ Ti” Palmieri changed the format of the recording industry, breaking the three-and-a-half minute barrier imposed by the recording industry.

In 2012, Palmieri continued to innovate, celebrating 75 years with new music included in the original score for a documentary co-directed by Bobbito Garcia called “Doin it in the Park” that explores the cultural influence of playground basketball on sports and music.

Palmieri’s music recorded for the documentary was released as a soundtrack in November of 2013. This was Eddie’s first time recording his own new music since winning back-to-back Grammys in 2005 and 2006. The songs featured in the documentary are part of Eddie’s next full-length album, Sabiduria, which will be released in 2017. Sabiduria is a fusion of Jazz, funk and Latin fused with Afro-world rhythms.

In 2013, Eddie Palmieri was awarded the coveted Jazz Master award by the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA). The NEA Jazz Master award is the highest honor an American Jazz artist can receive. For more about the NEA recognition, please visit: http://www.nea.gov/honors/jazz/index.html.

In 2013, Palmieri was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. For more information: http://www.latingrammy.com/en/news/2013-latin-recording-academy-special-awards.

In 2015, Palmieri released a new Big Band version of his classic composition, Vámonos P’al Monte, along with the first ever studio recording of another popular Palmieri original, Pa’ La Ocha Tambo.

In 2015/2016, Palmieri also recorded a Big Band album, entitled Mi Luz Mayor, which features Carlos Santana and Gilberto Santa Rosa.

In the fall of 2016, Palmieri recorded seven classic songs to be included in an interactive audio app available in 2018.

In the Spring of 2017, Palmieri released Sabiduria/Wisdom.

Eddie Palmieri celebrated his 81st Birthday on December 15, 2017 after concluding a year-long tour entitled “EP @ 80.”

All of Eddie Palmieri’s new music will be released in successive volumes beginning in 2017.

Eddie Palmieri and his Salsa Orchestra

Saturday, april 15, 2023 at 8:00pm, venue matthews theater, pre-show entertainment provided by dj ralphie mercado.

Grammy award-winning pianist, bandleader, arranger, and composer Eddie Palmieri has been at the forefront of salsa and Latin jazz for most of his life. Born to Puerto Rican parents in the South Bronx, by the age of 11 Palmieri had already performed at Carnegie Hall. In 1961 his band La Perfecta revolutionized both jazz and Latin orchestras by swapping out trumpets in favor of trombones for his front line, innovating a new sound that wove American jazz into Afro-Caribbean rhythms, laying the foundation for the New York salsa sound. His 1971 record with his elder brother Charlie as Harlem River Drive initially flew under the radar but has since been minted as an underground Latin funk classic, a socially conscious album that spoke to the inequality experienced in El  Barrio , Spanish Harlem.

Palmieri brings his salsa orchestra to McCarter, performing his greatest hits from a career spanning more than six decades.

Pre-show entertainment provided by DJ Ralphie Mercado starting at 7:30PM on the Matthews stage.

In celebration of his eightieth birthday, and sixty years as a professional musician, pianist Eddie Palmieri presents Sabiduria/Wisdom, a prodigious testament to his avowed spirit of investigation, and amazing zest for life. Throughout his illustrious recording career, Palmieri has expanded upon the complexities of Afro-Caribbean rhythms, combining them with the serious elements in the melodic and harmonic structures of jazz, to come up with what he refers to as dance music. With his renowned trademark percussive attack on the piano, ...

Brian Lynch is one of the most proficient “bilingual" artists in music--equally adept in both jazz and Latin genres. On this superb collaboration with piano giant Eddie Palmieri, the virtuoso trumpeter brings together his wealth of experience in both fields in a scintillating synthesis that is intelligent, exciting and truly personal. Lynch's understanding of Palmieri's unique brand of salsa con jazz sensibility is accurately described by the date's title, and the music here is the product of a truly sympathetic ...

Two decades of working as a highly accomplished trumpeter in Eddie Palmieri's Latin jazz band has culminated for Brian Lynch with this completely ravishing recording alongside his musical mentor. While the name of the group might raise the question of “who's on first?", rest assured that this is an inspired collaboration with the less-celebrated Lynch firmly at the helm. Most of the tunes are his, and the versions of Palmieri's pieces are marked by Lynch's hand. In fact, this album ...

Thelonious Monk once said, “Jazz is New York. You can feel it in the air." This is an observation that can be easily recast to produce another truism: “Salsa is New York. You can feel it in the streets." Both musics are integral to NYC culture and come together no more eloquently than they do in the musical persona of Latin jazz pianist Eddie Palmieri. NYC born and raised, Eddie comes from a musical family and seems to have been ...

At jny: Cleveland's Tri-C Jazz Fest, everything new is old again. That might sound retrogressive in a culture that valorizes novelty, but the announcement that the 43rd edition of the festival will return to the historic theaters of Playhouse Square is instead a comforting, Biden-era byword after the disruptions of the past two years. The festival also returns to a three-day schedule, June 23-25, and to a booking policy that incorporates artists with appeal beyond a ... read more

Grammy-award winner eddie palmieri launches the lehman center’s 2022-23 season.

Posted on 19 September 2022. Tags: Bronx , Grammy , Lehman Center , music , Salsa , The Bronx

by Henrietta McFarlane

Grammy-Award winning artist Eddie Palmieri and his Salsa Orchestra launched the Lehman Center’s 2022-23 season on Saturday evening.

Palmieri is a long-time performer at The Lehman Center and his popular presence is in-line with efforts to focus concert programming on reflecting the community’s diversity. Those efforts have been heralded by The Lehman Center’s Executive Director, Eva Bornstein, who took over in 2005 with a philosophy to “focus on Latinos, African Americans…and then all the other diverse communities in the Bronx.”

“I’ve been following him since 1962,” said audience member Harold Bridgewater. “He’s a legend, I wouldn’t miss this.”

The 85-year-old matched the enthusiasm of his dynamic Salsa Orchestra— at one point, walking center stage to dance salsa himself. At another point, he had the audience clap along to the distinctive rhythm typical of salsa.

The opening act included performances by Puerto Rican Tres player, Nelson Gonzalez, and the Del Caribe Latin Jazz All Stars. Spanish-Cuban singer, Lucrecia Pérez Sáez, then joined the group on stage to a “dancing” ovation from the audience. Eddie Palmieri kicked off the second half of the concert with an intimate piano-bass duo before performing favorite repertoire from his collection of over 36 albums. The crowd spoke a mixture of Spanish and English.

Singer-songwriter Arlene Gonzales performed “Para Que Sepan Quien Soy Yo”, which Palmieri wrote for the singer back in 2021. Her vocals floated above the complex cross-rhythms and subtle dissonances in Palmieri’s choice of chords on the piano. The pair are currently recording a new album together.

Palmieri’s parents emigrated from Puerto Rico to New York City in 1926. He was raised in the Bronx and learned to play the piano before starting his career as a timbales player in his uncle’s band. He is the recipient of ten Grammy awards, including the first-ever Grammy for the Best Latin Recording with The Sun of Latin Music in 1975.

“I love the Bronx and I’m going to dedicate this performance to the Bronx”, said Palmieri.

Assembly Member José Rivera recounted giving Palmieri his first gig in the Bronx.

“A hundred dollars for four hours. Eddie would tell you that was a lot of money,” the 86-year-old said.

The Lehman Center is located in Bronx Community District 7. According to the Community District Profile , Latinos account for nearly 70% of the population.

Robert Sancho, the show’s producer and former chairman of the Lehman Center’s board of directors, spoke on stage about resigning years ago because the music didn’t reflect the community in the Bronx.

“You’ve got 600,000 Latinos in the Bronx. Let’s have some salsa,” said Sancho as the crowd cheered.

Henrietta McFarlane, reporter for the Bronx Ink, has a background in performance and music criticism. She graduated from the University of Cambridge with a degree in Music in 2021.

Report: Former Alabama Standout Eddie Jackson Signing with Ravens

  • Alabama Crimson Tide

Former Alabama standout safety Eddie Jackson is signing with the Baltimore Ravens, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

"A Ravens-type move: Two-time Pro-Bowl safety Eddie Jackson reached agreement today with Baltimore on a one-year deal, per sources," Schefter wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). "A safety with six defensive TDs for the Bears now will bring his talents to Baltimore."

Jackson joins a Ravens team that finished this past regular season with not only the best record (13-4) in the AFC but the entire NFL. Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson took home his second NFL MVP award for leading the team to the AFC Championship before falling to the Kansas City Chiefs, who later won the Super Bowl.

Eddie Jackson becomes the fourth former Alabama standout on the Ravens roster, as he joins 2015 Heisman Trophy-winning running back Derrick Henry, Pro Bowl cornerback Marlon Humphrey, cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis and rookie offensive guard Darrian Dalcourt.

The Crimson Tide product was selected by the Bears with the 112th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. Jackson won the 2016 National Championship and earned the Defensive MVP award.

In 2018, Jackson was one of the best defensive backs in the NFL. He had the league's second-most interceptions with six, and he returned two for touchdowns (most in the NFL). He earned his premier Pro Bowl appearance and was named a First Team All-Pro.

In 2019, Jackson returned to the Pro Bowl, but the Bears offense was subpar, leading them to an 8-8 record and missing the playoffs.

In the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Jackson didn't record a single interception, but he recorded at the time his career-best tackle numbers in each year. In 2022, he was able to do it all as he grabbed four interceptions and logged 80 total tackles despite only playing in 12 games.

He caught the injury bug last season, as he only played in 12 games once again. But this time, his numbers were nowhere near 2022, as he had just 37 tackles.

Nevertheless, Jackson will now have a fresh start on a Super Bowl-contending team.

We’re going back to the swamp.

DreamWorks Animation has announced that “ Shrek 5″ is officially in development, with a far, far away release date of July 1, 2026. Original “Shrek” stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all confirmed to return.

Antonio Banderas’ return as the feisty feline Puss in Boots is not yet confirmed. “Shrek 5” will be directed by Walt Dohrn, who served as a writer and artist on “Shrek 2” and “Shrek the Third,” and as head of story on “Shrek Forever After,” in which he also voiced Rumpelstiltskin. “Shrek 5” will be produced by franchise returner Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri; Brad Ableson serves as co-director.

The “Shrek” franchise released four feature films between 2001 and 2010. The original “Shrek” turned DreamWorks Animation into a powerhouse studio with its $487 million worldwide gross. The movie became the first Oscar winner in the animated feature category. “Shrek 2” grossed $928 million. Both films competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. While “Shrek the Third” and “Shrek Forever After” earned less acclaim than the first two movies, they still managed to gross $813 million and $752 million worldwide. Both “Puss in Boots” spinoffs were theatrical hits as well, grossing $555 million and $484 million, respectively.

As Variety reported in 2018, Universal Pictures tasked Meledandri (who is also the powerhouse producer behind the “Despicable Me” franchise and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”) with overseeing a revival of the studio’s “Shrek” and “Puss in Boots” franchises. The animation guru was adamant at the time about not messing with with the franchise’s vocal performances, which he credited as being key to the “Shrek” films’ success.

The “Shrek” franchise also includes “Puss in Boots” spinoff titles, the most recent of which, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” opened in theaters in December 2022. The film was a box office hit with $484 million worldwide, and it also picked up an Oscar nomination for best animated feature.

The success of “The Last Wish” relaunched interest in a potential fifth “Shrek” movie, with Donkey voice actor Murphy saying in January 2023 , “If [DreamWorks] ever came with another ‘Shrek,’ I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey. They did ‘Puss in Boots’ movies. I was like, ‘They should have done a Donkey movie.’ Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.”

Meledandri told Variety in April 2023 that he was “thrilled” when he read Murphy’s comments, adding, “It’s evidence of his strong enthusiasm for a role that he so brilliantly inhabited and really created alongside the artists at DreamWorks. I found that comment to be very exciting.”

When asked if he thought Donkey was a character that could support its own film, similar to the fighting feline spinoffs starring Antonio Banderas, Meledandri answered, “Without question.” He also said he was keen to see the return of the film’s original voice cast (which includes Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz and Murphy) for “Shrek 5.”

Though no deals were in place at the time, Meledandri said negotiations with the three actors were going well. “We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return,” he said in April.
