My boyfriend booked a 1.5 hour Retro Tour of Paris, and we had the most amazing time! Roman was our fantastic driver. He was personable, funny, and a safe driver. He offered us options on where he could take us, so we had the opportunity to customize our own tour on the spot. We opted to go up to Montmartre and Saint-Germain. My boyfriend rode in the sidecar, and I sat behind Roman on the motorcycle. I felt really comfortable sitting at the back of the bike, and my boyfriend was happily taking pictures and videos for us from the sidecar. Not only was it fun and informative, I felt it was the most efficient way of getting around Paris, because we could zip through narrow alleys and streets. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to see a lot at a short period of time. I wouldn't miss out on this unique experience.

Louis was FANTASTIC, AMAZING, and FUNNY. He made this ride a wonderful experience. We loved it and highly recommended it ( ask for Louis, he is the best ) We took the 40 min tour drove around the city while Louis provided some interesting facts plus some jokes

This was the most amazing thing we did in Paris! We may have enjoyed it as much as any tour anywhere. Our driver/guide Julia made it so fun! Cannot recommend this outing enough. It is a must do activity especially as a newbie to Paris. We learned so much and got to see new things. We are hoping to return to Paris soon and this will definitely be on our list to do! Thanks for a Great Adventure Julia! It was a Hoot! No complaints here! Only helpful hint is the more time you can book the better!

This was my very favorite thing we did in Paris!! My husband and I had a blast! Julien is so much fun and he gave us an amazing tour of the entire city. It even started to pour down rain and they found a way to get us covered. I highly recommend!!

Such a fun way to see Paris, even in the rain! Six of us went, on three bikes. Communication with the company beforehand was easy and efficient. The sidecars are really spacious and comfortable, even for tall people. They picked us up at our AirBnB and then drove us all around, giving informative, friendly information about what we were seeing, including many things that we never would have known about on our own. The drivers were all friendly and entertaining, and they were generous with taking photos of our group. In our group, the age ranges were 13 to about 72, and everybody had a great time. Highly recommended! Probably the highlight of our trip (though there is time yet!).

This is an intimate and breathtaking way to see a big part of Paris! Julian was on time and a good guide for our adventure! Highly recommend this retro tour! Bring warm gear and consider booking a longer tour!

Retro Tours has only been in business a couple years. They are going to be one of the most popular things to do in the coming years and here's why- It's such a unique way to tour this fantastic city. Everyone we passed stopped to stare then had huge smiles often asking for brochures at stops. Their online website is great, watch the video- very funny. They are very quick to respond to inquiries and payments are easy. The driver is very careful. We did the 90 minute tour ending in Montmartre. Our guide was Julien and he was a delight. We could have done a much longer trip had we known how fun it would be. I am a total chicken about doing anything scary. I never once felt unsafe. That's very important to me. This was a surprise gift for my husband and Julien was waiting outside our hotel. My husband was blown away, just loved it too! Thanks Retro and Julien!!

A must on a visit to Paris! My girlfriends and I booked online, and it couldn't have been easier. Julien even called us the day before to confirm and work out some last minute logistics since visiting dignitaries were shutting down streets near our hotel. We took the 1.5 hour tour which flew by! Julien was so much fun and engaging and informative - he took the time to really customize our tour, especially since we had all been to Paris before. He took us to hidden squares and lovely neighborhoods that we would never have discovered on our own. (And he took a ton of photos for us! ). Even with the rain and not the best of weather, we had an amazing time with our gentlemen sidecar drivers. Can't wait to go back to Paris for another tour!

Oh my! That was so much fun! My daughter and I enjoyed our 1.5 hour tour with Tibo. We will definitely do it again! Highly recommend!

I tried multiple times to contact Retro Tour to confirm the tour but each time I reached voice mail. Retro Tour made no attempt to contact me by email. The day of the tour I called Expedia to let them know I could not get through and to please cancel as we had made other plans. Then, miraculously the Expedia agent was able to get through and deliver a long rambling answer as to why I could not get a refund. Buyer beware!

We may have missed the “French” part of the fusion but regardless, what a lovely meal! We got the spelt risotto, vegetable wok, black rice and miso eggplant. My husband liked the wok the best but mine was definitely the eggplant. Our waiter, Arthur, was beyond kind and attentive. He did a great job. The decor is very beautiful and we did the early seating (7pm) which is apparently unpopular so we had the entire dining room to ourselves for the first hour. This early seating included a free glass of post-dinner champagne which was tasty. Best of all, it was a short 15 minute walk to the Eiffel Tower where we watched the sunset from the top. How a $1 million makeover brought this decaying 1880s terrace back to life

A white double-storey house in South Melbourne.

It's a historic part of Melbourne known for its stately terraces and wide, tree-lined streets.

But buying a house in elegant South Melbourne also usually costs a pretty penny … unless you buy the worst house in the street, or possibly even the entire country.

An aerial view of the decayed two-storey terrace the buildings around it. The city skyline is in the background.

That's the mammoth challenge Paul and Jess Roche decided to take on when they snapped up an old — very old — weatherboard terrace in 2020, in their dream location.

Barely standing

Described by Restoration Australia host Anthony Burke as "$930,000 worth of overgrown ruin", the once-resplendent cottage built by a well-to-do Scottish baker in the 1880s had slipped into ruin, with an alarming tilt to boot.

"The house is falling over. The floor's rotted out in places so you're actually walking on dirt," Paul told the show.

The overgrown backyard of the two-storey timber terrace.

"There's some sort of vine growing throughout the whole house, in the walls, in the ceiling. There's not one piece of plaster that doesn't look like it's got a crack through it.

"The place is literally falling apart."

Vines overtake the house's original bathroom.

Jess said the timber house was a deceased estate that had been passed down through the generations of one family. No one had called it home for about half a century, and the neglect was showing.

"I think it was a bargain because no one wanted to tackle the project," said Jess.

A slice of history

However, the opportunity to snap up one of the last two-storey timber weatherboard terraces in South Melbourne was too good to ignore.

A very old, dilapidated kitchen with a variety of brightly coloured cupboard doors.

Having moved to a local rental, the couple initially had grand ambitions to carry out much of the restoration work themselves.

However, with Paul running his own insulation business, Jess teaching at a school a couple of days a week, and both running their three kids around to soccer matches all weekend, reality soon hit.

So they persuaded builder mate Ross McCulloch to come to take a look.

Ross's first, rather honest appraisal was: "You're shitting me, aren't you?"

"My biggest concern was the lean on it, the big lean-to and how we were going to straighten everything up," the builder said.

"But I saw through that and saw all the unique features of the skirting boards, the stairwell, the architraves … and I just fell in love with it straight away, and I thought I've got to have this job — I've got to do it."

And after some serious TLC.

Ross said he knew it was going to be a major challenge and cause sleepless nights, "but that's what life's about."

Prime real estate

The house, and the mid-Victorian period terraces around it, aren't short on history. In the 1850s, with the gold rush kicking off, the area became a tent city.

Soon after this population explosion, city planners decided that underused South Melbourne should be repurposed as prime real estate.

Swampy land, briefly used as a racecourse, became Melbourne's newest dress circle — St Vincent Place, featuring a central, crescent-shaped garden. It was all terribly British.

Principal heritage advisor for the City of Port Phillip, David Helms, said the new estate was very aspirational, populated by those who weren't afraid to flaunt their good fortune.

"As the area developed, you find the really, really wealthy people, the men and women who own factories in Port Melbourne and South Melbourne start to build the very grand terraces that we see around the square today," he said.

Many of the streets in the estate, and the park itself, were named after notable members of the English navy.

Looking brand new after its facelift.

Jess and Paul's street was no exception. Gazetted in 1866, Martin Street was named for Captain John Martin, whose overloaded ship capsized earlier that year, losing 220 souls.

When they bought their faded beauty, it had 1880s weatherboards, bricks from the 1970s, and an outdoor dunny that needed knocking over. To add to the challenge, Paul said there was a special interest heritage overlay on the property, with the main stipulation to "keep it original".

An outdoor dunny in a backyard overgrown with vines.

'Nothing is level'

One major fear was that by jacking the fully detached house up to pour a slab underneath, the whole thing might actually tip over.

"We've realised the house has been crooked, so nothing is level," said Ross. "We've been trying to level one side but then it pushes the other out."

To get the house even reasonably level, a plan was formed to almost entirely rebuild the ground floor with new timber.

Salvaging original decorative features, such as fibrous plaster ceiling roses, original curved skirting boards and mid-19th century cornice work, also called for an extremely delicate plan of attack.

Even before the project could get off the ground, objections from neighbours, council red tape and heritage hoop-jumping delayed work by months.

And when things finally got going, the hurdles, including COVID hold-ups, labour shortages and logistics issues, just kept coming.

A budget blow-out

Jess and Paul, who figured that $500,000 and six months should do the job, soon found their timeline and budget being severely tested.

Plans were also becoming pliable as the old house called the shots. For instance, plans to remove the entire staircase to prevent it being damaged — then reinstall it once the walls were straightened — were abandoned after it became clear the stairs would fall down if removed.

A plan to restore the original 1880s fireplace in the only downstairs bedroom also had to be shelved, proving a major disappointment to the couple.

"I really tried to keep that fireplace and the chimney in the house, but we just couldn't lift it and straighten it with that staying there," says Paul. "It was completely pushing the house over or holding the house up, I'm not too sure but it wasn't straight."

Some creative thinking led to an original fireplace upstairs being pulled out, restored and then reinstalled downstairs.

A result worth forking out for

A portion of the restored staircase, alongside some white banisters.

In the end, the cost of resurrecting this South Melbourne home to its former grandeur cost about $1 million — double Jess and Paul's initial estimate. The six-month timeline ballooned out to 14 months.

Some of the features, such as the problematic staircase, survived. It's now standing up straight.

"I remember this being so rickety … I felt drunk, I think," says Restoration Australia host Anthony Burke. "Now I'd have to say it's a sober staircase."

The retro kitchen also got a major modern upgrade, with a benchtop and splashback Burke described as less polite Victorian, more "a bit disco".

A couple in a newly-renovated kitchen.

"This is a little bit more of our personality, I think, coming through," said Jess of the blue Roma quartzite stone from Brazil which has copper running through it.

The family spends much of its time in the now open-plan kitchen and living area, which has also proven a hit with the kids.

"One of the favourite parts of the room is the concrete floor. They rollerblade and skateboard and do all the things you shouldn't do in here," Paul said.

"It's nice and warm with the hydronic heating — it just really makes this area quite liveable."

A renovated lounge and kitchen area, with brightly coloured cushions and built-in bookshelves.

And while some of the original features wound up in the skip bin — including some of the ceiling roses and rotting timber beams — Jess and Paul are happy they've managed to keep some of the old, and introduce some beautiful new features too, such as tessellated tiles on the front porch.

"We did try and keep as many things as we could and even little details like the doorknocker and the door handle ... and all the skirting boards," said Jess.

"So we've had to replace some things but we've at least kept it in the same style as what it would've originally been."

A modern dining room and stairs.

As for the cost?

"You know, COVID came along and we had a few delays with a grumpy neighbour, which probably cost us a little bit, and then we've added in quite a lot of high-end features into the house — the slab heating, all the cabinetry, the benchtops — so we've ended up around that 950 to a mill finish," Paul said.

Not appearing particularly concerned, he noted with a laugh: "We're going to have to keep working for a few more years to pay it off."

Banksy’s Protest Art, a Brat Bash, and the Return of Paul Mescal’s Tiny Shorts: All the Glastonbury 2024 Highlights

As per British tradition, more than 200,000 people—A-listers among them—decamped to a dairy farm in Pilton, Somerset, over the weekend for Glastonbury, headlined this year by Dua Lipa, Coldplay, and SZA. Catch up on this year’s highlights here.

Little Simz announced herself as a future headliner

The London rapper and former British Vogue cover star played the Pyramid Stage before headliners Coldplay (and later joined them onstage to debut a new track, “We Pray”), but it’s surely just a matter of time before Simz is topping the bill herself. With little in the way of bells and whistles (no choreo here), the star held the Glastonbury crowd transfixed for the duration of her set. “I need you to understand that you are witnessing greatness,” she said on stage. “And I don’t say that with arrogance; I say that with confidence.” Nobody is arguing with her—least of all the music press .

Michael J. Fox made the ultimate guest cameo

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

Perhaps the highlight of Coldplay’s undeniably epic set on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday night? An appearance from special guest Michael J. Fox, who joined the band to play guitar on “Fix You.” The 63-year-old star of Back to the Future , who has been battling Parkinson’s disease for more than 30 years, is key to the band’s origin story, according to frontman Chris Martin, who was inspired by watching Fox’s rendition of “Johnny B Goode” in the classic 1985 film. “Thank you so much, our hero,” Martin said on stage. Even the most committed Coldplay haters couldn’t fail to be moved.

Dua Lipa scheduled in some post-Pyramid down-time

Callum Turner with Dua Lipa, wearing an Ann Demeulemeester leather skirt and The Attico boots, the day after she headlined the Pyramid Stage.

What to do after you’ve smashed the Friday night headline slot on the Pyramid Stage, clad in a “ sexy, strong, cool ” wardrobe of Loewe and Versace? If you’re Dua Lipa, you find boyfriend Callum Turner, spark up a cig, and set about enjoying the rest of the greatest festival on earth as a spectator. She was spied strolling around the VIP area with her beau the day after her barnstorming performance—wearing Ann Demeulemeester, no less.

Paul Mescal packed his micro-shorts

After exposing maximum upper thigh on the front row at Gucci, Paul Mescal brought his signature skimpy shorts to Glastonbury. The star was snapped by his sister Nell Mescal , beaming in a pair of Adidas three-stripe shorts, a baseball cap, and a band tee.

The Irish contingent was strong

I Drink a Ginger Shot Every Morning&-Here Are All the Benefits

Paul was far from the only Irish A-lister on site. As well as Daisy Edgar-Jones, Mescal’s festival crew included his compatriots (and former co-stars) Saoirse Ronan and Andrew Scott. Ronan was later spied belting out “Paradise” from her boyfriend Jack Lowden ’s shoulders during Coldplay’s Saturday night set.

The crowdsurfing was a work of art

Five years after Banksy made Stormzy a stab-proof vest for his stunning headline set on the Pyramid Stage, the guerrilla artist and activist put his always-potent stamp on the 2024 festival, launching an inflatable dinghy filled with dummies dressed as migrants into the crowd during Idles’ Saturday night set. The timing was carefully chosen: not only is the UK days out from an election in which immigration will be a key issue, but the life raft also appeared as the band played “Danny Nedelko,” a track that celebrates diversity and takes aim at the insidious rise of nationalism.

Palestine was a persistent theme

Image may contain Damon Albarn Electronics Speaker Clothing Hat Accessories Glasses Adult and Person

Damon Albarn addressed Palestine—and the importance of voting—when he joined Bombay Bicycle Club on stage in a surprise appearance.

Amongst the usual peace signs and Pride banners, it was impossible to miss the Palestinian flags fluttering in the skies over Worthy Farm this year. Nine months into Israel’s military onslaught in Gaza, several acts felt compelled to make their feelings clear—some more directly than others. There was much to-ing and fro-ing on Twitter over whether Dua (who has publicly called for a ceasefire) did or didn’t deliberately position herself close to a Palestinian flag during her set in order to get it on camera, while Coldplay invited the Chilean-Palestinian singer Elyanna to join them on stage, along with Femi Kuti, for a rendition of their track “Arabesque.” The Irish band Lankum, meanwhile, sang “The Rocks of Palestine” on the Park Stage on Saturday afternoon, a reworking of the traditional folk song “The Rocks of Bawn,” with lyrics acknowledging the suffering in Gaza.

SZA became the first Black woman to headline Glasto since Beyoncé in 2011

SZA closed out the festival by headlining the Pyramid Stage on Sunday night, bringing her sad bangers to Somerset in a set that was beset by technical issues, but nonetheless hypnotic .

Charli XCX brought the Brat mood to Levels

Not sure if you’ve heard but… it’s a brat-girl summer . The mood’s progenitor, Charli XCX, duly pitched up to DJ at Levels in one of the most talked-about sets of the weekend. She even brought out Robyn herself when she played “ With Every Heartbeat .” The only downside? It took place at 12:30 a.m. on a non-televised stage, so you can’t watch it back—which, let’s face it, is quite brat.

A Tom Cruise performance was not on the bill… but it did happen

From Tay Tay to Coldplay: Tom Cruise with Gillian Anderson and Simon Pegg at Glastonbury.

Just a week after he was seen looking radiantly happy, if somewhat confused, at Taylor Swift’s Wembley gig, Tom Cruise’s musical tour of the UK continued at the festival, where he was filmed launching into a rendition of Oasis’s “Wonderwall” with Simon Pegg and Gillian Anderson. Only at Glasto…

There was an unofficial screening of the England match

Something else that wasn’t on the bill: a Euros screening. England faced Slovakia in the knockout stages at 5 p.m. on Sunday, but it wasn’t being aired at the festival. One Directioner Louis Tomlinson decided to take matters into his own hands, ducking offsite on Sunday morning to buy a flat-screen TV and a generator from Argos, which he set up in the camping area. He was ultimately rewarded for his efforts by Jude Bellingham, who saved the squad from being sent home with a goal in the 95th minute, which was followed by a second in extra time from captain Harry Kane.
