Benjamin Chase Harper, better known simply as Ben Harper, is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He hails from Pomona, California.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that music has been a key part of Harper’s life right from the very get go; when he was growing up in Pomona, his grandparents ran a revered music store, The Folk Music Center and Museum. It was frequented by genuine musical luminaries, including Leonard Cohen and blues legend Taj Mahal; the latter was surely an influence in Harper’s teens, when, after playing his first-ever gig at the age of just twelve, he became deeply enamoured with the music of blues forefather Robert Johnson.

Harper’s never just been a straightforward bluesman, though; the first concert he ever attended, at the age of nine, was headlined by Bob Marley, and he’s often spoken of the importance of reggae to his own sound, which also incorporates funk, soul and folk.

Harper – who has a diverse CV that includes amongst his achievements the discovery and signing of Jack Johnson as well as a cameo in the David Lynch film ‘Inland Empire’ – released a slew of well-received records in the nineties, often backed by his band, The Innocent Criminals, but it’s actually been since the turn of the century that he’s enjoyed most success; he’s scooped three Grammy Awards, two for his collaboration with The Blind Boys of Alabama, ‘There Will Be a Light’, in 2005, and another for ‘Get Up!’, the record he released with Charlie Musselwhite in 2013.

Live reviews

Ben Harper's solo show at the Green center last night was, for me,THE show of the summer. The event center was managed like a Swiss clock. Employees everywhere watching every corner of the place to make sure everybody had a great time. The Green Center itself is stunning, from the gorgeous stage and main room to the bathrooms! Hundreds of people all organized and everyone was in a great mood. Ben Harper was riveting from the very first song! We sat out on the green and watched the huge video screen outside. It was a lovely evening and we walked by several times and watched Ben Harper performing on stage. He was absolutely riveting and for most every song, you could've heard a pin drop, even outside on the grass! Everyone was focused on this artist. He brought a beautiful woman out to sing with him and people were wondering who she was. It was his mother! Now that's a very conscious and cool guy that will bring his mother out to sing on stage!! She had a voice like an angel and their voices together were heavenly. Ben Harper is a wordsmith. Every song, every word cuts like a knife into the psyche, strumming the poetic vein in each and every one of us. This man speaks from his Soul and Spirit; he gives words to what most people never dare to think, much less utter so candidly! And Harper is one of my top three performers EVER! Weather on record or "live", he is extremely magnanimous and gives everything he's got to his listener. Need I say...LOVED IT!!!!!

American singer-songwriter Ben Harper is one of those artists that hasn’t quite managed to capture the magic of his live performances on his studio recordings. It’s not that his albums are in anyway bad (far from it, he has created many of my favourite albums), but that he is so exceptional live that his recordings pale in comparison.

I first saw him at the Hammersmith Apollo, London, back in 2004 with his backing band The Innocent Criminals. From the opening of "Take My Mind" to closer "With My Own Two Hands / War," he was absolutely incredible, his distinctive voice impassioned and his guitar skills far more electric than you’d imagine. His more rock-inspired songs, like the funky "Brown Eyed Blues" and the stoner rock of "Temporary Remedy," were accentuated with otherworldly guitar solos and near-screamed vocals.

However, I have always been a bigger fan of his softer side, and he often dedicates large segments of his concerts to an acoustic section. On this particular night in London he performed delicate solo versions of "Waiting On An Angel" and "Walk Away," both beautiful, but the best song was a moving rendition of "Amen Omen."

Ben Harper has had a long and versatile career, performing in different projects and trying his hand at a variety of genres, but the one thing that has remained consistent is the quality of his thrilling and intimate live shows.

Some artists really seem to reimagine their music when performing live so that it is almost unrecognisable to the recorded material. Ben Harper is one of these artists as the way in which he expands and reinterprets his folk rock sound is rather astounding. Supported by a whole host of accompanying musicians onstage, the whole operation is complex and engaging to watch as an audience member as you are trying to identify where this plethora of sounds is coming from.

The Grammy award winning star has enjoyed critical success throughout his career since his very first album in 1994. Due to this consistent level of quality, the audience seems pretty happy to hear any material that Harper has selected for the show. 'Welcome to the Cruel World' is particularly energetic and sees the whole band really jam out beneath the ornate chandelier lighting.

Harper also covers a selection of his influencers and personal favourites including Ellen Harper and Mazzy Star in his own unique way. He is also one of the only performers I know who could return for a second encore comprising of nine tracks, but by the sound of the audience's cheers they would have been happy to hear him play all night.

Wonderful Moment! It was the second time I saw Ben Harper In show and the both nights were incredible!

It's a really impresive moment of music. It's not just a succession of songs, Ben and Charlie customize each song to make a special one. It's a very musical concert. There isn't electronics sounds like all the news common songs, the instruments make the work. As a spectator, you see that Ben, Charlie and their 3 musicians take some pleasure on stage in front of public.

Thank's to Ben and Charlie!

It was a great show in a fantastic places that is Red Rock Amphitheater. Ben is always the best and giving is 100%, it was nice to see his band in action. Loved his choices of song for the show. I prayed he will sing " Burn one down" and he did but I guess it was inevitable in Colorado. What a great singer, so full of emotions. Loved it!

Ben Harper is truly an amazing and talented musician. He keeps a dialog going with the audience all thru his set. He played for two hours nonstop and kept the crowd energetic and enthused the entire time. This was my second time to see him and the next time he comes around you can guarantee I will be there.

What an amazing artist and human being, you cannot help but love him to bits, men and women alike.

We stood maybe 4 rows from the stage and had the best fans around us and an amazing concert experience!

Awesome show....was good enough on Saturday that I went to see it on Sunday night as well.

Was well worth seeing two nights as they played a bunch of the same songs....but it was different with a bunch more laid back tracks.

Much respect between these two amazing artists.

Amazing show! Pure talent, soul and caring for music. I am just waiting to see he and his band again. Absolutely in love.

In this show with Charlie Musselwhite it was all about quality blues. Two legends together making magic happen.

100 minutes full of Blues Power.

Unbelivable musicians - not only Ben and Charly also the Band was incridible. Silent songs changes with hard Bluesrock. Great location - The Sound was later absolute great.

BEN HARPER Announces June Release Date For New Album ‘WIDE OPEN LIGHT’

Singer-songwriter, musician and producer Ben Harper has announced his new studio album WIDE OPEN LIGHT , the follow up to his GRAMMY-nominated record BLOODLINE MAINTENANCE, to be released on June 2 via Chrysalis Records . Today, he shares the new single “ Yard Sale ” featuring long-time collaborator Jack Johnson, and revealed tour dates for summer 2023.

WIDE OPEN LIGHT is described by Ben as a family of songs he’s written where each track is a close relative to the next. It’s deliberately minimalist and the songs themselves do as much of the heavy lifting as the production. “There was once a time when albums didn’t need an adjacent story or fable. When the songs were enough,” Ben says. “I’m excited to return to this.”

The new single “Yard Sale,” Ben explains, “follows a man through the final blurred stages of a breakup. With each passing verse the couple grows further beyond reach or repair. By the song’s end, he’s more confused than when the song began.”

ben harper jack johnson tour

Following the release of WIDE OPEN LIGHT , Harper will tour on select dates with The Chicks, before heading out on his own extensive US tour this fall. Harper’s tour begins in Richmond, VA on September 29th, and will feature shows in Portland, ME, Buffalo, NY, Cincinnati, OH, MIlwaukee, WI and more, and will include performances at the Oceans Calling Music Festival and Sound on Sound Music & Arts Festival.

This month, Ben appears in the new AppleTV+ series “Extrapolations,” a fictional drama based in the near future when the effects of climate change have become embedded in our daily lives. The limited series features an all-star cast that also includes Daveed Diggs, David Schwimmer, Edward Norton, Forest Whitaker, Gemma Chan, Heather Graham, Meryl Streep, Tobey Maguire, Yara Shahidi and many more.

As a 3x-GRAMMY-winner, Harper has amassed international critical applause and a worldwide fan following  for his own genre-traversing body of work while also producing acclaimed albums by Mavis Staples, Rickie Lee Jones, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Natalie Maines, Ziggy Marley, and others. An inveterate collaborator, Harper has also recorded with a diverse span of artists ranging from John Lee Hooker, Charlie Musselwhite, to Ringo Starr, Keith Richards and, most recently, Harry Styles, to contribute his signature guitar work to the superstar’s chart-topping album, HARRY’S HOUSE . Harper joined Styles for an astounding 12 nights of performances at The Kia Forum in Los Angeles this past fall.

Harper has recently been featured on CBS Mornings , ABC News , Forbes , SPIN and Variety , to name a few.

Paradise Meets Protest As Jack Johnson, Ben Harper Begin Tour

ben harper jack johnson tour

CHICAGO -- Ben Harper and Jack Johnson share a kinship onstage and off, but it's the musical pairing that fans came for Friday night at the UIC Pavilion.

Kicking off their summer tour despite dreary un-summerlike conditions outside, Harper and Johnson treated the sold-out crowd to three hours of their jam-oriented sounds. Though often said to be stylistically similar, the two artists could not have be more different performers.

Johnson, who played first, has perfected the low-key, island singer routine, almost to a fault, while Harper and his muscular five-piece backing band, the Innocent Criminals, were not afraid to turn up the volume, mining rock and roll riffs in their charged closing set.

Hailing from Hawaii, Johnson had planned to be a surfer before a mutual friend slipped Harper a demo tape. Impressed with what he heard, Harper adopted Johnson as his protégé, touring with him as an opening act before Johnson achieved mainstream success.

Johnson's Hawaiian influences colored his 90-minute set, which was rich with breezy acoustic atmospherics. Playing before an impressionistic black and white scrim adorned with palm trees lining a windswept beach, Johnson's relaxed approach and minimal acoustic strumming set a romantic atmosphere, perfect for an outdoor summer show.

The only problem: the concert, staged in a large arena, dwarfed Johnson and his accompanying bassist and drummer. Sure, the crowd swayed along to his soulful sound, but an arena show requires a magnetic performer. Johnson, whose music is more about mood than message, will probably fare better when the tour moves outdoors.

Beginning his set solo, Johnson nestled up to his acoustic guitar on "Times Like These." The performance started on a deflated note, thanks to the song's hushed tones and Johnson's stationary position before the microphone -- his energy level and his voice barely above a whisper.

Johnson's set -- which included a cover of beach buddy Jimmy Buffett's "A Pirate Looks at Forty" -- perked up with his band's entrance. Highlights included the layered, reggae-inflected "Fortunate Fool," dreamy and floating on its ragged guitar riffs. He delivered "Flake" with a restrained force, heaving its plea of "Please, please, please don't pass me by" over its spiraling melody. A cover of Taj Mahal's "Farther on Down the Road" benefited from opening act Kid Koala's textured collage of frittered rhythms, which helped expand Johnson's sound.

After Johnson's opening set, Harper injected the evening with equal parts soul and revolution. Set opener "Excuse Me Mr." swelled over a percussive backdrop, laced with Harper's blistering electric guitar. His versatile guitar playing, including his expert technique on the slide guitar, provided bouts of energy. Though Harper positioned himself front and center, he remained egalitarian.

Bassist Juan Nelson enjoyed a riveting solo on the gospel-tinged "Brown Eyed Blues," and percussionist Leon Mobley shone on a loosely paced, highly rhythmic foray through Harper's hit "Steal My Kisses."

Harper, an adept lyricist whose songs highlight social issues, like racism or the problems of war, added fragments of Bob Marley's "War" to "With My Own Two Hands." His kinetic music and rich voice rang with fervor as he sang the line "I can reach out to you with my own two hands."

Like Johnson, Harper played a solo set. Seated on a chair draped in a patchwork canvas, Harper constructed emotional melodies layered with his falsetto, resonant guitar playing and weighty lyrics. Though Harper's melodies offered more substance than Johnson's insouciant approach, the two artists complemented each other and -- judging by the audience's response -- both found their own way to please the crowd.

When Ben Harper is out on the road, he stays there for quite sometime. Currently supporting his latest studio album, Diamonds on theInside , Harper’s 18-month tour will take him from a large nightclubin L.A. to a small theater in Berlin to a blues festival in Byron Bay,Australia. Though he has never had a commercial smash album, hisacoustic jam-band-rock sound and continual touring have created a largecult following since the early ’90s. In much the same vein, JackJohnson got his touring chops from opening-act slots on previous Harpertours. This time around, though, the two are co-headliners, sharing thesame gear and sound crew. Mix caught up with the show inBerkeley, Calif.’s outdoor amphitheater, the 9,000-seat Greek Theater, toward the end of the summer leg. The band is then off for numerousdates through Europe and then back to the States for a slew of holidayradio shows and a run through the major markets.

SMALL WORLD

It can be a bit strenuous, says monitor engineer Derek Van Ord, tobe on your toes for Johnson and then turn around and mix for Harper. But the flipside of this double-duty is that both Van Ord and FOHengineer Michael Pollock (who declined to be interviewed) have beendoing sound for the two for many years and have their sound naileddown. “It just kind of happened,” Van Ord says about thelogistics in having one sound crew on this tour. “When Ben quittouring for a year-and-a-half, Jack continued touring with Michael. When Ben started touring again, it just made sense [to have bothPollock and Van Ord mix for both acts].” As for Van Ord, who hasbeen working with Harper since 1997, if it had been anyone besidesJohnson, he wouldn’t have signed on to do monitors for both. “Ilove Jack’s music: Low volume, so I don’t get beat up for Ben’sshow.”

While Van Ord stresses that mixing monitors for Harper and Johnsonwas challenging, it was alleviated somewhat in the fact that Harperowns most of the rig. “Michael and I got Ben on thatearly,” reveals Van Ord, “because when we first startedtouring with him, Ben wanted a very consistent sound, and to do that, you have to have the same gear. So we pushed Ben to start small: buyyour vocal microphone and then you have to buy a certain processor. Then, when he’s doing things on his own in L.A., he has all of his gearavailable and he can just put it in a studio and away hegoes.”

MAKING PERFECT FITS

Since they first came out, Van Ord was using the Midas HeritageH3000 console for Harper and on Weezer’s last tour. But on this tour,he made the switch to digital, opting to work with the InnovaSon GrandLive consoles for monitor and FOH because of their space-saving andweight-saving attributes. “With six guys in the band now, it isjust so much easier to have it all set. So I’m not carrying big racksof stuff. I can have a compressor on every channel. The console itselfis just a control surface and all of the digital conversion is done inthe stage box.” In that stage box are eight input cards that runon DOS — “It’s kind of clunky, but it’s superstable,” says Van Ord — and each input card offers two 266processors so that every four inputs has its own processor. The stagebox has four BNC co-ax outputs that, when used as a matched pair, twogo to FOH and two go to monitor, “sort of like a digitalsplit,” Van Ord points out.

“The InnovaSon is a little easier for FOH than for monitorsbecause you can only view a single input or a single mix at one time.So if you have to do a handful of changes at once, it can be a littleslow. But once you get used to the whole process, you can actually doit pretty quickly.”

Van Ord comments that by the end of this leg of the tour, the GrandLive was jam-packed, using all of the console’s 48 processing channels,24 outputs and 56 inputs. “I’ve got 20 output faders and then onthe mix box, I have 24 processed outputs for backups and opening bandsand other mixes.” As for the vocal chain, Van Ord relays thateverything he uses is all built-in onboard with the system.

While Van Ord has switched consoles only twice, he has jumped tofour different in-ear manufacturers for Harper: from Shure E1s, toSensaphonic 2X and Pro4 models, to Future Sonics single-driver models, and currently to Ultimate Ears UE7s and UE5 ambient models. “WhenI was on tour with Weezer, I started a relationship with Ultimate Earsand I really liked their product and their field support isunparalleled. My goal is, Number One, hearing conservation and thennumber two, to make everybody happy. We’re trying to keep as low of astage volume as possible; the in-ears have definitely freed me up tonot contribute to that stage volume.”

Harper uses a single driver and a pair of wedges, which areMicrowedges originally designed by Rat Sound. “They’relow-profile, 12-inch with 2-inch co-ax compression drivers that arecommercially produced by Radian because they have Radiancomponents.” Newly hired guitar player Marc Ford only uses15-inch Rat Sound wedges, and bassist Juan Nelson is on one in-ear.Mixes for each of the bandmembers are straightforward: Whatever isfurther away from where each member is playing onstage is predominatelylouder in the mix. Harper gets just himself with a little bit ofkeyboards in his wedges.

Before this tour, Johnson wasn’t using in-ears at all. But duringthe second leg of the summer tour, Johnson approached Van Ord to“try them out.” “I got him using them for a good twoweeks,” Van Ord recalls. “He went with a single one, aswell, because he’s such a soft singer and just to have his vocal bemore present. I just use Ben’s gear for the drummer [Adam Topol, whoseusing Shure E1s].” Johnson receives a bit of himself and a littlebit from bassist Merlo Podlewski.

WHAT YOU DON’T OWN, RENT

Van Ord has had a working relationship with Rat Sound since he firstrented from the company in ’97, including numerous rentals of thecompany’s Rat trapezoid proprietary cabinets on previous Harperoutings. On this tour, he is renting the FOH P.A. (an L-AcousticsV-DOSC and dv-DOSC — a first for this tour) and monitor wedges.“The P.A. is fantastic,” Van Ord enthuses. “You saveso much on truck weight, it sounds fantastic and, for me, you don’t getall of the noise coming out from the back of the boxes.

“We use anywhere from eight to 12 cabinets with three dv-DOSCboxes underneath and then arrays out for pitfills. We also use the dvsfor pitfills, because they are so nice and low-profile that you canjust slap them on the stage and nobody sees them.” The system canbe enlarged to accommodate larger venues with 36 V-DOSC boxes and atleast a dozen dv-DOSC enclosures.

“We’re leaving for Europe soon, and the whole P.A. system thatwe used on the summer tour is right now in a cargo container on a boatheading over to Norway. We figured why break up a good thing?”Van Ord asserts. “The crew that we had was fantastic. So, wethought, ‘Let’s keep it consistent. It works, let’s go withit.’”

Ben Harper Announces New Album ‘Wide Open Light’ Shares Single Feat. Jack Johnson

Ben Harper, Wide Open Light

Three-time Grammy winner, singer-songwriter and producer Ben Harper has announced his new studio album WIDE OPEN LIGHT, the follow up to his GRAMMY-nominated record BLOODLINE MAINTENANCE, to be released on June 2 via Chrysalis Records. Today, he shares the new single “Yard Sale” featuring long-time collaborator Jack Johnson , and revealed tour dates for summer 2023.

WIDE OPEN LIGHT is described by Ben as a family of songs he’s written where each track is a close relative to the next. It’s deliberately minimalist and the songs themselves do as much of the heavy lifting as the production. “There was once a time when albums didn’t need an adjacent story or fable. When the songs were enough,” Ben says . “I’m excited to return to this.”

The new single “Yard Sale,” Ben explains , “follows a man through the final blurred stages of a breakup. With each passing verse the couple grows further beyond reach or repair. By the song’s end, he’s more confused than when the song began.”

“Yard Sale” is a delicate, acoustic breakup song performed with Harper’s regular collaborator Jack Johnson that mourns the end of what feels like a significant relationship. Harper’s vocal has a tone of acceptance to it, as if he knows she’s gone but just can’t get angry about it anymore. The title refers to the way people walk in and out of one’s life like they do a garage sale driveway and the metaphor fits well. Of course, Ben’s guitar genius sparkles through here. He’s one of the most inspiring players the USA has produced in the last couple of decades and his magic is always strong. Miss this and miss out!

Following the release of WIDE OPEN LIGHT, Harper will tour on select dates with The Chicks, before heading out on his own extensive US tour this fall. Harper’s tour begins in Richmond, VA on September 29th , and will feature shows in Portland, ME, Buffalo, NY, Cincinnati, OH, MIlwaukee, WI and more, and will include performances at the Oceans Calling Music Festival and Sound on Sound Music & Arts Festival.

As a 3x-GRAMMY-winner, Ben Harper has amassed international critical applause and a worldwide fan following for his own genre-traversing body of work while also producing acclaimed albums by Mavis Staples, Rickie Lee Jones, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Natalie Maines, Ziggy Marley, and others. An inveterate collaborator, Harper has also recorded with a diverse span of artists ranging from John Lee Hooker, Charlie Musselwhite, to Ringo Starr, Keith Richards and, most recently, Harry Styles, to contribute his signature guitar work to the superstar’s chart-topping album, HARRY’S HOUSE. Harper joined Styles for an astounding 12 nights of performances at The Kia Forum in Los Angeles this past fall.

Harper has recently been featured on CBS Mornings , ABC News , Forbes , SPIN and Variety , to name a few.

Jack Johnson Announces Summer 2022 Tour Dates

by Jacob Uitti December 8, 2021, 11:26 am

It’s no “brushfire fairytale”; Jack Johnson is really headed out on the road in the summer of 2022 with a slew of dates beginning in Gilford, New Hampshire on June 21 and ending in Chula Vista, California on October 7.

Videos by American Songwriter

Along the way, Johnson will be joined by Ben Harper, Ziggy Marley, Lake Street Dive, and other artists during the 30-date tour.

“It’s been a while since the band and I have gotten together to play music,” said Johnson in a statement about the upcoming tour. “We can’t wait to see all our friends on the road next summer and looking forward to a great tour. Hope to see you at a show! Aloha.”

Tickets go on sale Friday (December 10) via Johnson’s website here .

The 46-year-old, Hawaiian-born Johnson announced the tour on Twitter this week, writing, “We are excited to announce Jack and the band will be hitting the road this Summer! Tickets go on sale this Friday at 10 AM local time. Jack’s Fan Presale is on Wednesday, December 8th at 10 AM local time. Learn more and pre-register at http://jackjohnsonmusic.com/summer22 .”
