Kalkan has a rich and ancient history, world-renowned walks, excellent beach clubs, fine cuisine and plenty more to absorb you, from sun up to sun down.

On the water

1. A day out on a traditional wooden gület is the best way to experience the full beauty of the Turquoise Coast, with time for a swim and a delicious lunch on board. Or join a sunset cruise and watch the stars come out.

2. Enjoy a kayak trip along the Esen River from Xanthos to Patara Beach, 12km of soft white sand, just a 15-minute drive west of Kalkan. You can stop off for a therapeutic mud bath on the way.

3. For some child-friendly archaeology, visit the sunken remains at Kekova. A leisurely boat trip reveals the half-submerged ruins of houses, staircases and the original harbour. There’s Simena’s Ottoman castle to visit en route too.

4. Teenagers will love the watersports available around the beach clubs, from kayaking and paddle boarding to jet skiing.

5. Take a boat trip from nearby Kaş to the Greek island of Kaştellorizo. Its huge harbour serves as the local pool with the most magnificent backdrop. Look out for the resident turtles and don’t forget your passport.

6. Still being excavated, Patara is one of the most rewarding ancient sites to visit. There’s a huge theatre, recently restored parliament building and impressive Roman baths, not forgetting the incredible 11-mile long Patara beach.

7. Xanthos dates back to the 4th century BC. It was the capital of ancient Lycia and the original home of the Nereid tomb monument, now in the British museum. Four kilometres away, in Letoon, you’ll find the Temples of Leto and her children Artemis and Apollo.

8. Abandoned after the Turkish-Greek population exchange of 1923, the preserved ‘ghost village’ of Kayaköy consists of hundreds of deserted, Greek-style houses and churches. It’s a 90-minute trip worth making.

9. Located around a fortified hilltop in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains, ancient Tlos was one of principal cities of Lycia. Most of it has now crumbled away, but you can still see the remains of the acropolis, fortress, cave tombs and a Roman stadium.

10. The city of Myra was once important as Ephesus; the current site includes a large Roman amphitheatre and Lycian rock tombs cut into the cliff face. And just a few kilometres away, you’ll find The Basilica of St Nicholas.

11. The stunning location high in the cedar forests adds another dimension to the well-excavated Lycian site of Arycanda, built into the mountainside on five terraces. It’s home to the largest bath complex in Lycia, as well as two necropolises, a stadium and an amphitheatre.

Enjoy the beach life

12. There are some beautiful beaches, including Kaputaş Beach – located along the amazing coast road between Kalkan and Kaş – a stunning cove with turquoise water, shingle and sand. It’s accessed via 180 or so steps, but don’t let that put you off as this is a beautiful place to swim, particularly in the mornings.

13. Kalkan's own beach is formed of bright white pebbles lapped by stunningly clear water, ideal for a spot of snorkelling. With Blue Flag status and handy facilities such as restaurants and changing rooms, this is a great family choice close to Kalkan harbour.

14. Voted one of the top beaches in the world by the Times Online , the lovely Patara Beach is the longest in Turkey at an impressive 11 miles. Patara sits within a national park and is rich in birdlife. It’s also the breeding ground of the endangered loggerhead turtle and a short stroll from the area’s ancient ruins.

15. For easy access to facilities, try one of Kalkan’s beach clubs. They’re essentially platforms on the rocky shoreline with ladder access into the sea and they all have umbrellas and sunbeds, changing and toilet facilities and a café/restaurant. Most charge an entrance fee per person, although the Indigo Beach Club is free to Simpson Travel guests.

16. Soak up the wonderfully romantic views of Kalkan’s harbour and bay from one of its famous rooftop restaurants – many are open to the stars too. With places to eat and drink on every corner, you can feast on a range of traditional Turkish and international cuisine.

17. Follow the circular drive from Kalkan inland, via the traditional farming village of Bezirgan and over the top to Islamlar for lunch at one of the famous trout restaurants – and experience a different way of living.

18. Take a break from the coast and drive up into the relative cool of the mountains, passing through forest of enormous trees along the Kibris Canyon and enjoy a relaxed lokanta lunch in Gombe Town Square.

19. Saklikent Gorge is 300m deep, cut through by an icy river along the bottom of the 18km canyon. You can explore along the bottom of the gorge, but wear good shoes and be prepared to get wet!

20. The landscape around Kalkan is covered in walking trails, including the famous Lycian Way. From gentle half-hour ambles to strenuous full-day excursions, you can discover a wealth of history and culture at whatever pace you choose.

For many decades, the small town of Kalkan was hardly mentioned in mainstream publications. Other Turkish destinations like cosmopolitan Bodrum or historical Istanbul gained admiration instead. That was until the turn of the century, when the small village attracted attention and respect from outside entities.

Why you Should go to Kalkan

Travel companies, magazines, and estate agents selling property in Kalkan , saw the opportunity to promote the town as an upmarket destination. Its central position on the Turkish Riviera and historical importance as a stopping point on the Lycian way, added to the appeal but it was the scenery, wealth of things to do and landscape that provided the most potential.

The small bay, leads steeply up the surrounding hills ensuring most properties have an amazing and unforgettable view of the Mediterranean Sea and coastline. The area was already well known for vibrant orange sunsets but the well planned out urban development of the growing town ensured it kept its traditional and eye-catching ambiance.

According to Julian Walker, Director of Spot Blue, who are a leading property agent in Turkey , the already established hotel and property owners, ensure Kalkan will certainly not be turning into a “party” and “18’s only” scene.

Things to Do in Kalkan

A daily boat trip to the sunken city of Kekova and the ancient castle of Simena is one of the most popular activities. Setting off from the traditional village of Ucagiz, strong adventurers can also opt to sea-kayak the route.

A set tour, travels to the UNESCO ruins of Xanthos, the natural gorge of Saklikent and the long, sandy beach of Patara . If beaches don’t impress you,  explore the nearby ancient ruins or rustic village, that was one of the first places in Turkey to embrace tourism.

The bustling region of Fethiye can be reached within a couple of hours on public transport. Ideally two days is needed to explore it properly so consider an overnight stay.

• Within a short bus ride from the centre is the ghost village of Kayakoy . Tour providers in Kalkan also operate excursions that head directly there

Tlos is the home of ancient ruins dating from numerous empires including the Lycians and Ottomans. Mythological stories say the large rock tomb in the side of a cliff face, that is inaccessible to man, was the home of Pegasus, the winged horse.

Kalkan is also part of the Lycian way, a 516 kilometre route covering the Mediterranean coast and encompassing numerous historical ruins from the Lycian period. You can complete numerous stages using Kalkan as your starting point.

Every day, from the nearby resort of Kas,  a ferry heads to the neighbouring Greek island of Meis . The recommended activity while there, is to visit the amazing and stunningly beautiful Blue Cave.

Sports and Sailing

Since Kalkan is part of the Turkish Riviera, I strongly recommend sailing, whether it is a day cruise or completing a set Blue Voyage route. Boats are available for private hire or alternatively, you can always jump on board a charter cruise.

Scuba diving in this area is big business. Ship wrecks attract the most admiration while beginners prefer to start off in shallow waters. More than 15 sites sit between the coastline of Kalkan and neighbouring Kas, making it a haven for experienced scuba divers.

Alternatively, go jump off a mountain. No seriously, all jokes aside. You don’t need to jump, you run instead. In neighbouring Olu Deniz, the popularity of tandem paragliding with a professional means you can see up to 20 paragliders in the sky at a time. They run off Mount Babadag, at approximately 2000 metres, but if this is too high for you, head to Kas instead because they run off a mountain that is only 1000 metres high!

Kaptus Beach is another favoured spot with visiting foreigners and Turks. Reached by public transport, or within half an hour of driving, it sits off the main highway and is backed by a large gorge. It is popular because of the striking blue turquoise waters, however the huge amount of steps leading down to reach it, can put off anyone who is not energetic.

There is a seemingly endless amount of shops and eateries, all open until late in the evening to discover, from charming boutiques, art galleries and traditional shops offering handmade goods.

Kalkan Travel Guide

Modern day Kalkan , located on the coastline of Turkey, is worlds away from its days as a humble Greek-governed fishing village. Yet its rich history is still wonderfully visible in the atmospheric old town, as well as the nearby Lycian ruins scattered along its coastline and the ancient tombs overlooking it from the Taurus mountains.

Holidaymakers are spoilt for things to do in Kalkan . Located on The Lycian Way – one of the world’s most spectacular walking routes – treks to sheer drop gorges, empty beaches and scenic mountain vistas are right on your doorstep. The unique landscape also offers epic canyoning, kayaking and some of the country’s best diving. Or, for those wanting to simply relax, two of Turkey’s best beaches are a short drive away.

Combine all of this with a buzzy harbour, slick beach clubs and fantastic restaurants hiding on the old town’s rooftops (with views of the Mediterranean’s infamously turquoise waters) and it’s easy to see why so many British ex-pats have fallen in love with this coastal Turkish town.

Best time to visit Kalkan

Boasting over 300 days of sunshine a year, Kalkan is a hit with sun worshippers. Summer temperatures rarely drop below 25°C, and while we can’t promise great weather, it’s almost a given whenever you visit. If it’s summer highs you’re after, plan your trip to Kalkan between June-August. Temperatures peak to 40°C, which is manageable given its coastal positioning. Although, we would recommend staying in the shade during the peak hours of 12-3pm.

As you can imagine, once November nears, the temperatures dip to lows of 12°C with an increased chance of rain. On average you can expect 12 rainy days per month during the winter months, but we wouldn’t over think that too much.

When in doubt, the springtime is always a good time to visit Kalkan, especially if you’re travelling with younger kids. You’ll beat the scorching temperatures and fewer crowds with beaches practically for yourselves.

How to get there

Airlines such as easyJet, TUI, Thomas Cook Airlines and British Airways all run direct flights from the UK to Dalaman Airport. The flight is just over four hours.

Hiring a car is the easiest way to explore the region. There are hire companies at Dalaman Airport. The drive to Kalkan takes just over two hours (there is a toll en route). Alternatively, taxis/private shuttle transportation, such as Dalaman Express , work well for non-drivers and larger groups.

Buses are the cheapest (yet longest) transfers. They involve changing en route. Havas  run buses from Dalaman Airport to Fethiye, where you can then board a Batı Antalya bus bound for Kalkan.

The golden bay of Kaputaş

Known for its crystal-clear waters and rugged terrain, this stretch of the ‘Turquoise Coast’ is strewn with tiny bays and unnamed pebbly shores. A short drive from Kalkan, you’ll find two of Turkey’s best beaches. Hiding in a deep gorge, is the picturesque bay of Kaputaş, and fringing the ruins of a Lycian port, runs the country’s longest beach, Patara. Food and drink

Kalkan old town is famous for its atmospheric rooftop restaurants. Whilst the cuisine is often relatively simple, it’s brilliantly fresh, authentic and often very affordable.

The former Greek fishing village may be a thriving tourist resort now, but during the Ottoman Empire it was an important port, trading everything from silk and charcoal to olive oil and wine. However, it’s the region’s Lycian roots which are most obvious when out and about – from tombs which seemingly hang off mountain sides, and the sarcophaguses which pepper nearby Kaş, to various Lycian city ruins.

Serious history buffs should visit the ruined cities of Xanthos and Letoon, which have made it on to UNESCO’s World Heritage Site list, or the beautiful hanging tombs at Demre. Alternatively, combine a look around one of Lycia’s key ports with a day on one of the country’s best beaches at Patara, or head to Kas’ beautiful sea-facing amphitheatre to see the sunset before enjoying dinner in the town.

A devastating earthquake caused this tiny Turkish island to succumb to the Mediterranean Sea. Tour operators like Abi Travel’s  offer organised day trips, or jump onboard a fishing boat to see the partially submerged city and its Byzantine Church. Usually, trips also include a visit to Simena, where you can appreciate its Ottoman castle.

The gushing mountain rivers are rich in trout and dotted along them are villages famed for their trout farms. Head 15-minutes’ inland, to picturesque Islamlar, home to Bodamya Tepe Restaurant . The former Greek fishing village of Kalkan is today a very popular and slightly upmarket resort. Its population of four thousand includes some 1500 expats, two-thirds of whom are British, and most of the small boutique hotels that used to be Kalkan’s lifeblood have been converted into apartments and second homes. The surviving package-holiday trade dominates the remaining short-stay accommodation, and ensures that Kalkan remains more exclusive than nearby Kaş. Once you accept the resort’s pervasive social profile, lack of a sandy beach and the fact that restaurants, though good, are uniformly overpriced, Kalkan makes a good base for exploring Patara and the Xanthos valley, while excursions east or inland might occupy another day or so.

Despite the rash of new villas and apartments spreading over the hillsides around, the compact centre has retained many of its nineteenth-century Greek houses, many now serving as restaurants and bars, and thus at least some of its charm. Tourism and property sales, now the town’s raison d’être , are fairly new phenomena: until the late 1970s both Kalkan and neighbouring Kaş eked out a living from charcoal burning and olives. It’s hard today to imagine it as it was in the 1980s, when its rather bohemian atmosphere contrasted starkly with the often oppressive conditions prevailing in Turkish cities after the 1980 coup.

The artificially supplemented pebble beach called Kömürlük , at the east edge of Kalkan, is pleasant enough, with reasonably clean water that’s chilled by freshwater seeps. Although larger than it looks from afar, it still gets hopelessly full in summer, when the sunbeds (TL7 for two beds and an umbrella) are at a premium.

One alternative is to use the swimming platforms or lidos that flank the bay, accessible on well-priced shuttle boats. The only other bona fide beach within walking distance is a coarse-pebble one well southwest on the coast, visited by the Lycian Way on its way to Gelemiş.

Most of the twenty-odd dive sites near Kalkan are 25–40min away by boat, with many located around the islets at the mouth of the bay. Of these, beginners dive the shallows at the north tip of Yılan Adası (Snake Island), and almost the entire perimeter of the remoter Heybeli; another excellent novice or second-dive-of-day venue is Frank Wall on the east side of the bay, with spectacular rock pinnacles and plenty of fish. More advanced divers are taken to an even more dramatic wall between 20m and 50m at the south tip of “Snake”, alive with barracuda, grouper and myriad smaller fish; to reefs off Heybeli and Öksüz; or to sand-bottom caves on the mainland with their entrances at 25m.

The most spectacular calm-weather dive site, for intermediate and advanced divers, is Sakarya Reef , southeast of Kalkan off İnce Burun. Here, the mangled remains of the Duchess of York , a North Sea trawler built in Hull in 1893 and apparently scuttled for an insurance payout sometime after 1930, lie in 15m of water. However, more interesting is the newer, larger Turkish-built Sakarya nearby, wrecked in the 1940s, broken into three sections at depths of 35–60m, retaining teak-plank decking, intact winches and a vast cargo of lead ballast.

Except in the caves, fed by chilly fresh water, water temperatures are a comfortable 18–30°C; the sea warms up abruptly in late May or early June with a current change, and stays warm into November. Visibility is typically 25–30m.

Prices are competitive, with two-dive mornings from £35/€43, and a PADI Open Water course from £180/€260.
