Fodorʻs Travel Essential Norway is a travel guidebook published in February 2020 that covers the entire country. It highlights the best attractions, things to do, hotels, and more across various regions of the country. 

The guidebook is broken down into different chapters putting each region into focus. I actually co-authored this book and wrote all of the Arctic Norway chapters! You will find everything from the best restaurants in the Lofoten islands to canʻt-miss festivals in Oslo. 

Essential Norway has maps and practical information that makes planning your trip a breeze. As I covered the Arctic Norway section of the book, I can say I visited the many places I talked about in the guide. Some of the main destinations covered in the book are Tromsø, Bergen , Trolltunga, Stavanger, Svalbard, Flåm, Oslo, the Lofoten islands, and Trondheim. 

Another special feature of the book is that it contains useful words and phrases in Norwegian. These can help you get to know the locals (although they speak stellar English).

While I think there are many great books about Norway out there, sometimes you need a travel guidebook to really get to know the place before diving into other pieces of literature about the country.

Lonely Planet Norway 8, by Anthony Ham, et al.

Lonely Planet books are widely known to be the best travel guidebooks for pretty much any city and any country in the world, and this applies to Norway too.

The latest version for Norway is Norway 8 , the 8th edition travel guide to Norway from Lonely Planet. It is jam-packed with information on travelling to Norway, and quite literally tells you everything you need to know.

From what to expect in each month of the year, to the best restaurants, things to do and even some local tips and tricks, you won’t have any questions left afterwards. Plus, the Lonely Planet books are known for helping people travel on a budget and that is no different for their Norway travel guide. The book even teaches you how to explore Norway Fjords for free. 

I always get a Lonely Planet book when I’m planning a trip, even if it’s just the pocketbook. Even though it sometimes feels expensive, it’s always worth it. You simply can’t get the insight that Lonely Planet books offer anywhere, even online.

Norway with its population of just over 5 million receives 9 million-plus visitors a year with the majority of those arriving over the summer months. Popular destinations include Oslo,  Bergen , Flam and surrounding fjords (the Naeroyfjord) and Tromso in northern Norway.

In this post, I have gathered together some of the best books about Norway (or set in Norway). 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window - Jonas Jonasson

Bestseller in 2012, you are probably familiar with the film that has been recently release. A very humorous book and as usual, best to read the book before seeing the film.

Jan Guillou’s epic tales about the Knight Templar Arn Magnusson are available in English and the most successful books of all time in Sweden.

A man called Ove by Fredrik Backman has also been recommended as a funny read.

Nordic Ways - Debra Cagan

A new anthology of essays, representative of all five Nordic countries. It describes life in the North from different perspectives.

Swedish Noir:

Godmother of modern Scandinavian crime fiction, Maj Sjöwall, co-author with Per Wahlöö of the Martin Beck series. I suggest reading these in order. Local libraries should have the complete series – 14 books by memory but they are mostly thin.

Falling freely, as if in a dream - Leif G W Persson

Popular authors: Stieg Larsson, Camilla Lackberg and Henning Mankell

The Year of living Danishly - Helen Russell

Hilarious and well written, this novel chronicles the author’s move to Denmark’s rural Jutland. She is persuaded to up sticks from north London, swapping a job editing for MarieClaire for a freelancer’s life so that her husband can take a job working for Lego, which is based in Billund, the town that bequeathed the plastic brick to the world. Russell makes it her mission to discover why the United Nations named Denmark the world’s happiest country. In a bold move, they start their new life in January. In Jutland, where locals could teach dormice a thing or two about how to hibernate.

Just As Well I’m Leaving - Michael Booth

Not strictly about travel in Scandinavia, but this funny travelogue follows the 19th century travels of Denmark’s favourite writer, Hans Christian Anderson.

Danish Noir:

The Keeper of Lost Causes – Jussi Adler–Oslen

House of Orphans - Helen Dunmore

A gloriously evocative historical novel, with excellent background on early-20th-century Finnish rural life, the class divide, workers’ movement and burgeoning nationalism, through the eyes of sympathetic characters. Interesting to read about the Finnish relationship and history with their neighbours, Russia.

Palace of the Snow Queen - Barbara Sjoholm

This is a winter travelogue that spends more time in Norway and Sweden, but is good on Lapland and the Sámi in general. It has much detail on the building of snow hotels, and pays a visit to Inari’s film festival.

Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name - Vendela Vida

This is a woman’s voyage to discover her roots and evokes Finnish and Norwegian Lapland through her vulnerable visitor’s eyes. The emotional journey is powerful, but the setting’s just an exotic backdrop here and let down by inaccuracies, which is a shame. Only if you like an emotional, easy read.

Purge or When the Doves Disappeared - Sofi Oksanen

Sofi Oksanen is a Finnish contemporary writer. She is considered one of the most prominent contemporary authors of her generation as well as a global literary phenomenon.

Finnish Noir:

The Hummingbird by Kati Hiekkapelto

Travelling with your family - be sure to read some Moomin books before you leave. Originally written as fairy tales for childre, their philosophic nature is universal and makes the books enjoyable for people of all ages and from all backgrounds. The carefree and friendly Moomins provide a warm-hearted reading experience, and these books were an essential part of the childhood of every Finnish kid.

Independent People - Laxness

For a gritty glimpse of the Icelandic soul, Halldór Laxness’s humorous, heart-breaking, deep minded work Independent People is an absolute must.

The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s search for the Happiest places in the world – Eric Weiner

New York Times bestselling humorous travel memoir by long time National Public Radio foreign correspondent Eric Weiner, he starts his journey in Iceland, one of the world’s happiest countries.

Names for the Sea: Strangers in Iceland – Sarah Moss

Sarah Moss had a childhood dream of moving to Iceland, sustained by a wild summer there when she was nineteen. In 2009, she saw an advertisement for a job at the University of Iceland and applied on a whim, despite having two young children and a comfortable life in Kent. This Cold Heaven: Seven Seasons in Greenland - Gretel Ehrlich

For the last decade, Gretel has been obsessed by Greenland; it’s terrain, culture, and the treacherous beauty of a world that is defined by ice. In This Cold Heaven she combines the story of her travels with history and cultural anthropology to reveal a Greenland that few of us could otherwise imagine. It can get a little repetitive by the end.

An African in Greenland - Tété-Michel Kpomassi

Tété-Michel Kpomassie was a teenager in Togo when he discovered a book about Greenland—and knew that he must go there. Working his way north over nearly a decade, Kpomassie finally arrived in the country of his dreams. This brilliantly observed and superbly entertaining record of his adventures among the Inuit is a testament both to the wonderful strangeness of the human species and to the surprising sympathies that bind us all

ESTONIA & RUSSIA:

A Gentleman in Moscow - Amor Towles

A epic in its ambition, enthralling in its storytelling, entertaining in its humour and eloquent in its prose. The story is set amongst the socially chaotic birth of communist Russia, inspired by the Metropol Moscow.

Between Each Breath - Adam Thorpe

In this witty recent novel, Tallinn and the Estonian islands are the setting for a successful Englishman’s midlife crisis and infidelity, and the fallout from his actions.

Lost Cosmonaut, Strange Telescopes - Daniel Kalder

Both these books are both blackly comic and serious explorations of some of Russia’s quirkiest and least visited locations. In the Lost Cosmonaut, the ‘anti-tourist’ author puts Kalmykia, Tatarstan, Mary-El and Udmurtia under the microscope. In the latter, Kalder goes underground in Moscow, hangs out with an exorcist and extends his travels into Siberia to meet the religious prophet Vissarion.

10 of the best last-minute spring ski holidays

T he ski clock may be ticking, but there’s still plenty of opportunity to get to the mountains before the resorts close. And, whether you’re yet to book or you’re planning yet another flit to the snow, the truth is that late season can be the best time to go .

Demand, along with prices, takes a dip in March , offering a magical moment of opportunity between the peak-priced half-term and the Easter school holidays. And although Easter falls early in 2024 (March 31), there’s enough time to take advantage of the quieter airports, shorter lift queues and mountain restaurants with tables to spare.

But even if you’re locked into school holidays, there are also reasons to be cheerful. As spring approaches, the days are getting longer, the lifts open later, and warmer temperatures make days on the mountains more enjoyable, particularly for young children and beginners who are more susceptible to cold. 

And what about the snow? Well, things are looking rosy in that direction too. After some fallow weeks at the start of 2024 and into February, there has been recent heavy snowfall across the Alps , with Italian resorts reporting the heaviest falls of the year so far and even lower-lying resorts in France experiencing a substantial top-up. 

Ian McIlrath of Ski Solutions, says: “The conditions in Austria are exceptional at this point in the season. In particular, the Arlberg region covering St Anton.” Further north, Scandinavian resorts continue to offer some of the best conditions in Europe. Andy Hemingway of Ski Safari comments: “ Norway is in the midst of an unbelievable winter, the powder days have been plentiful and, with fewer people on the slopes than other destinations, the snow stays untracked for longer.” And while winter got off to a slower start in some North American resorts, snow is now falling with moderate to heavy snow predicted over the next week.

So, when should you book and where should you go? The key strategy is to aim high so, if you do hit a warm spell, you still stand a good chance of decent skiing. Here are 10 last-minute deals to snow-sure resorts to help you make the most of the last few weeks of the ski season. 

Tignes, France

With lifts operating to above 3,400m, Tignes has a season that runs into May, followed by summer snow sports on its Grande Motte glacier. 

Book it: Peak Retreats (023 9283 9310; peakretreats.co.uk ) offers stays in Le Lodge des Neiges residence, near the Boisses telecabine in Tignes 1800, with indoor pool and hot tubs, from £549, self-catering, based on five sharing a two-bedroom apartment, including Le Shuttle crossing with a free upgrade to FlexiPlus. Departs March 16.

Mayrhofen, Austria

At a relatively low 630m, Mayrhofen can be bathed in warm spring sunshine but still with plenty of opportunity for late-season skiing and snowboarding as slopes rise to a snow-sure height of 2,500m.

Book it: Crystal Ski (020 3451 2821; crystalski.co.uk ) offers stays at Eberharter Apartments, near the resort centre and close to the ski bus stop, from £1,233, self-catering, with the option to upgrade to half board. Departs March 23. 

Myrkdalen, Norway

One of the country’s snowiest resorts, open until April 30, Myrkdalen offers slopes that are best suited to beginners and improving intermediates, with off-piste skiing for more confident experts.

Book it: Ski Safari (01273 224060; skisafari.com ) offers the four-star Myrkdalen Hotel, a ski-in/ski-out hotel near the ski school and slopes, from £990, half board, based on two adults and two children under 12 years sharing a family room. Departs April 7.

Cervinia, Italy

Glacier skiing, a top station at 3,480m and a resort at 2,000m mean snow can cover the roofs of the upmarket hotels and apartments until early May – Cervinia has it all at the end of the season. 

Book it: Elegant Resorts (01244 897581; elegantresorts.co.uk ) offers stays at the five-star Saint Hubertus Resort, with spa, pool and gourmet restaurant, from £2,530 based on a prestige room. Departs March 16.

Val Thorens, France

Not only the highest resort in the huge, 600km Trois Vallées area, but also in Europe, Val Thorens (at 2,300m) has lifts that continue to operate into early May.

Book it: Erna Low (020 3011 1222; ernalow.co.uk ) offers stays at four-star Le Hameau du Kashmir, a ski-in/ski-out residence with two restaurants and pool, from £564, self-catering, based on four sharing a two-bedroom apartment, including return Flexiplus LeShuttle crossing. Departs April 13.

Whistler, Canada

After a slow start, snow is falling on the linked mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb in western Canada’s Coast Mountain range, a vast ski area of more than 8,000 acres with slopes for all abilities.

Book it: Frontier Ski (020 8776 8709; frontier-ski.co.uk ) offers the Summit Boutique Hotel Whistler, in Whistler Village with pool and hot tubs, from £1,545, room only, based on deluxe studio with kitchenette. Departs April 8.

Avoriaz, France

Avoriaz is the highest of the dozen resorts that make up the Portes du Soleil area, and, at 1,800m and with slopes rising to 2,225m, its purpose-built, car-free centre is strong on ski-in/ski-out accommodation.

Book it: Sunweb (020 3170 8206; sunweb.co.uk ) offers stays at Résidence L’Hermine, 100m from the slopes, from £818, self-catering, based on two adults and two children sharing a one-bedroom apartment with kitchenette, including lift passes. Departs March 30.

St Anton, Austria

Situated in Austria’s Arlberg ski region, St Anton is one of Europe’s snowiest resorts, with fast links to neighbouring Lech and is particularly popular with experts. 

Book it: Ski Solutions (020 7471 7700; skisolutions.com ) offers the four-star Hotel Banyan, with modern interiors, pool and sauna, from £1,895. Departs March 16. 

Breckenridge, USA

With a top lift rising to a giddying 3,915m – the highest in North America – and a resort height of 3,000m, this Colorado resort, extending over five peaks, has an upper snow base of 140cm, which bodes well for late-season skiing.

Book it: Ski Independence (0131 243 8097; ski-i.com ) offers stays at the Residence Inn by Marriott, near the Quicksilver chairlift, from £2,348 per room only based on studio accommodation. Departs March 21. 

Zermatt, Switzerland

It is possible to ski all year round on the highest slopes of Zermatt’s Matterhorn glacier at 3,883m, but the main season for this atmospheric resort usually runs into late April.

Book it: Inghams (01483 938047; inghams.co.uk ) offers Aparthotel Naco, from £1,419 based on three sharing a studio with kitchenette, balcony and use of an indoor pool, including train travel from St Pancras. Departs March 23.

IT outage: What has been impacted and where?

Airlines, banks and broadcasters across the world are affected by the meltdown - caused by an update global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike rolled out which affected Microsoft Windows PCs.

A global IT outage is affecting major services including airlines, banks, healthcare and broadcasters across the world.

The meltdown is related to a bug in an update from global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which has affected Microsoft Windows PCs and knocked systems across the globe offline.

CrowdStrike's chief executive said on Friday afternoon the company has identified the bug and is rolling out a fix - but warned it will still be "some time" before all systems return to normal.

Healthcare: NHS England says the "majority of GP surgeries" are affected - many have been unable to book appointments or access patient records

Two thirds of GP practices in Northern Ireland have been impacted, its Department of Health said - some practices are operating on an emergency appointment only basis as clinical systems are inaccessible

Kennedy in New York Swissport - one of the world's biggest ground handling services for airports, check-ins, and baggage - has also been impacted Traffic control provider National Air Traffic Services has not been affected
