These amazing chef-led food tours will have you coming back for seconds

Chef-led food tours to whet your appetite

More than 10 years later, I still fondly recall one of the best travel experiences of my life: a food tour that wended its way through Kraków and charming towns tucked in the Tatra Mountains of Poland.

In between field trips to places like the 14th century Wawel Royal Castle and Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory , our small group learned how to make a proper pierogi and plump golumpki under the guidance of Polish chef Marek Widomski. We indulged in morning snorts of homemade cherry vodka before taking lessons in cooking potato pancakes and just-caught trout.

Beyond the historic architecture, open-air markets, and mountainous countryside, the Krakow to Zakopane food tour offered me an almost spiritual reconnection to my beloved late mother and aunt — one hunk of oscypek (smoked sheep’s cheese) at a time.

Whether you're exploring your cultural heritage or fascinated by the other cultures' culinary traditions, these six travel companies are serving up chef-led food tours that will have you coming back for seconds.

A recipe for adventure with Poland Culinary Vacations

A traditional holiday supper cooking class with chef Gieno Mientkiewicz in Warsaw, Poland

Poland Culinary Vacations offers a robust menu of food tours for every kind of foodie. On the Poland Christmas Market Tour , you'll cook and bake with two professional chefs — one of whom is a Polish artisan cheese expert — while also exploring the country's legendary holiday markets. The Culinary Tour of Greater Poland and Poznan will have you preparing roast duck with red cabbage and dumplings, as well as making stops at the Croissant Museum and the Emperor's Castle in Poznan.

In Polish Cooking with Chef Anna Hurning in Szczecin in Western Pomerania, Hurning teaches guests how to make traditional Polish dishes, including paczki, a Lent delight.

Mexican Culinary Traditions with Austin chef Iliana de la Vega

Oaxaca's culinary artistry, as showcased by Mexican Culinary Traditions' food tours

James Beard Award-winning chef Iliana de la Vega of Austin and her daughter, Isabel Torrealba — a food writer and Mexican cultural anthropologist — take you on immersive vacations focused on Mexico's food culture and history. Their travel company, Mexican Culinary Traditions , offers food tours for those who appreciate arts and crafts and luxe lodging.

Oaxaca City: Ancient Traditions Alive is the pair’s most popular tour, as guests explore the deep roots of this complex cuisine amid vividly colored colonial buildings, lively markets, and indigenous arts and textiles.

You may also want to dig into the cuisine of Mexico City; Morelia, Michoacán; or Mérida, the capital of Yucatán — all of which are food tours that Mexican Culinary Traditions offers.

Cooking and food tours with Philadelphia chef Aliza Green

Preparing a Cyclades salad on a food tour in Santorini

Aliza Green is a Philadelphia-based chef and author (“The Bean Bible” and “The Butcher’s Apprentice,” to name two titles) who whisks foodies to all corners of the culinary planet. Food tours include explorations of places like France's Bordeaux and Basque Country and Bilbao, Spain, as well as Greece, Morocco, and Italy.

Her Portuguese Delights tour introduces food enthusiasts to the culture and cuisine of the Iberian Peninsula. A pioneering female chef, Green takes you to centuries-old bakeries to try pastel de nata and introduces you to the Douro Valley wine region, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll even attend a cooking class in the ancestral home of one of Portugal’s oldest families.

Along the way, you’ll hear traditional Fado music, traverse winding streets to visit Gothic churches, and get to know Lisbon’s neighborhoods, including the medieval district of Alfama. Have the exclamation, "Legal!" — pronounced lay-gow — in your back pocket, which means “cool.”

Bog & Thunder's food tours through Ireland

Seaweed foraging at low tide on Derrynane Beach, County Kerry

Bog & Thunder ’s food tours aim to prove why Ireland should be the next hot food destination. The company is led by award-winning chef, cookbook author, and restaurateur Max Sussman and writer and environmentalist Kate McCabe. Deeply committed to ecotourism, Bog & Thunder’s trips are ideal for the environmentally conscious food enthusiast who likes wandering off the beaten path.

In 2023, chef Natasha Pickowicz co-led a “More Than Cork” food tour, which included culinary activities like foraging for seaweed, fileting and smoking wild fish, and dining al fresco at a Michelin-starred restaurant. Legendary Irish chef Darina Allen also joined the group for dinner on the last evening of the tour.

Consider booking a Bog and Thunder tour led by chef Nick Curtola, who helms the kitchen at one of Brooklyn’s most popular restaurants and wine bars, The Four Horsemen . The tour was designed in collaboration with The Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin, a five-star property marking its 200th anniversary in 2024. It pairs a luxury hotel experience with the best food that Ireland’s capital city has to offer. You'll also get behind-the-scenes access to local chefs and writers and take day trips to the surrounding countryside.

Black Tomato's Tasting Notes

An Earth Tribute Ceremony in Peru with Black Tomato

For immersive, luxurious culinary journeys, take a gander at Black Tomato’s Tasting Notes , co-created and designed with Michelin-starred chefs and personalities granting access to their kitchens and processes. You'll visit emerging gourmand destinations that inspired the chefs and the places where they source product. You'll also taste sample their most creative meals.

Each itinerary is designed and piloted by chefs. Take a food tour through Peru’s Sacred Valley with Virgilio Martinez, whose Central restaurant in Lima is ranked the fifth best restaurant in the world. This tour may include piranha fishing in the Amazon and dining in the rainforest. Or peek behind the closed doors of Basque Country’s secret culinary social club, Txokos, with chef Dani Lopez. You can also sample dishes from the 24 gastronomic regions of Slovenia with the country's father of modern fine dining, Janez Bratovz, while truffle hunting and cheese making along the way.

Central Holidays' Umbria food tour with Chef Lorenzo Polegri

Shopping for fresh produce on a food tour in Orvieto

Central Holidays has a roster of wine and food tours. Whether Spain, Italy, or Croatia, you’ll be busy during cooking classes with acclaimed chefs.

For an extra special experience, consider reserving your spot on the Live and Eat Like a Local in Umbria with Chef Lorenzo food tour, where you’ll learn the secrets of Italian cookery in Umbria's Orvieto region. You'll go truffle hunting and pick fresh ingredients at farmer’s markets, as well as attend butchery workshops and cooking classes led by farmer and chef Lorenzo Polegri of Casale Polegri in the Umbrian countryside.

Other experiences on this tour include sampling artisanal cheeses at a goat farm and stopping at a family olive oil mill that has been producing the luscious liquid for more than a century from trees that are thousands of years old. You'll also visit 13th century Montegiove Castle and storybook Medieval towns surrounded by vineyards. It’s a pretty dreamy getaway for Italian food and culture fans.

More than just providing great tasting food, our vendors serve as a talking-point to our farming, fishing and produce in the Northwest and what they are doing to maintain higher quality control than the average. Our team keeps the tours light-hearted but also bring some attention to our local food ecosystem and touch on awareness in certain industries.

“ I cannot recommend this tour enough!! It is a must!! Our guide was Chef Carolyn. She was so knowledgeable, helpful, kind and witty! She gave us great historic information about Pike Place Market as well as took us to some really delicious food spots in the Market.

She was very considerate and aware of any dietary restrictions of the group. The shop owners all loved her and it was easy to see why.

If you are in Seattle, you have to take this food tour!! You will not regret it!”

“Our family took the wonderful 2-hour foodie walking tour of Pike’s Place Market. We got to skip the line at many famous eateries and tried all sorts of delicacies from specialty chocolate to clam chowder to cheeses and sausages. We even got to try the James Beard award winning Philippino food hidden back in the market. Chef Carolyn was amazing! She told us all sorts of stories about the history of the market and food stalls and food and recipe facts from her many years as a chef and restaurant owner. We highly recommend this tour.”

Seven Chef-Led Food Tours That Explore Cuisine and Culture at the Same Time

There are few better ways to learn about the culture of your destination than to explore its cuisine, and these new food tours, led by accomplished chefs, will help you embrace both.

lead food tours

By Nora Walsh

Food tourism is on the rise, prompting tour companies and cruise lines to cater to traveling food lovers with culinary experiences led by working chefs — on land and at sea.

Explore private cooking clubs around the globe

The travel outfitter Black Tomato launched Tasting Notes , a series of journeys led by Michelin-starred chefs and personalities from the Netflix program “Chef’s Table.” Travelers can explore a wide array of foodie destinations from Spain and Slovenia to Peru and Argentina. In the Basque Country, Daniel López takes guests into the private world of txokos (members-only cooking clubs), on a tour of his favorite pintxos bars, and into his critically acclaimed Kokotxa kitchen for a cooking class. This trip is offered year-round with five-night itineraries starting from $5,135 per person based on double occupancy.

Explore Italian culture and cuisine by bike

From May to mid-October, both this year and next, Tourissimo , an Italian tour specialist, offers four bike tours to the regions of Piedmont, Emilia-Romagna and Sicily, each led by a notable North American chef who educates guests on the cultural aspects of local gastronomy. While cycling through bucolic landscapes, travelers learn about the country’s culinary traditions by visiting local producers, partaking in cooking workshops, and sampling staples like Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, prosciutto di Parma, and handmade tortellini paired with regional wines. Bookings start at $3,995 per person based on double occupancy.

Food and wildlife in South Africa

Roar Africa has teamed up with the New York-based chef Dan Kluger, of Loring Place , to launch a food-forward South African journey to Cape Town, the Cape Winelands and Kruger National Park. From Oct. 27 to Nov. 5, an intimate group of guests receive insider’s access to artisanal shops, farmer’s markets, breweries, wineries and top restaurants including The Test Kitchen . The trip culminates with a wilderness excursion and a hands-on training session with Mr. Kluger and student chefs from the local Singita School of Cooking . Prices range upward from $15,600 per person based on double occupancy.

Explore spices and teas in India and Sri Lanka

Kanthi Kiran Thamma, an award-winning Indian chef based in Brighton, England, leads guests on culinary sojourns to cities in southern India and Sri Lanka through his tour company, The Spice Circuit . From Nov. 17 to 25, travelers can join Mr. Thamma in Sri Lanka to visit food markets, spice gardens and tea plantations. Guests also cook alongside expert chefs to master the art of local recipes like rice flour pancakes and a traditional seven-vegetable curry. Prices start at $2,325 based on double occupancy.

Take a gourmet Polynesian cruise

On the water, Windstar Cruises is joining with the James Beard Foundation to create gourmet-themed voyages accompanied by all-star chefs and sommeliers. Each sailing includes chef demonstrations of signature dishes, trips to local markets and producers, and dinners with beverage pairings. The pastry chef Emily Luchetti will travel with guests from Nov. 26 to Dec. 6 through Polynesia , escorting guests to a family-owned vanilla plantation in Tahiti, where they can stock up on the fragrant spice to use in baking classes on board. Tickets start at $3,399 per person based on double occupancy.

Enjoy a food float down the Amazon

Aqua Expeditions picked top Peruvian chef Pedro Miguel Schiaffino to host a limited-edition culinary trip on the Amazon River from Oct. 29 to Nov. 2 (prices from $4,050 per person based on double occupancy). He will introduce travelers to exotic fruits in Iquitos’ Belen Market, whip up ceviche and tamales with guests, and lead tastings of local pisco, cacao, coffee, and catfish caviar.

Experience Vietnamese cuisine along the Mekong

In Southeast Asia, the travel company APT teamed up with the Australian celebrity chef Luke Nguyen to lead a 14-day trip in Vietnam and on the Mekong River. From Nov. 30 to Dec. 13, Mr. Nguyen will guide guests through the alleyways of Ho Chi Minh City to meet his relatives and visit their kitchens, shop for ingredients at market stalls, and cook with him as they sail down the Mekong. Prices from $5,945 per person based on double occupancy.

The Best Chef-Led Tours Around The World

What better way to experience a destination than with a chef as your tour guide.

lead food tours

Sure, you can experience a new city by taking in its sight and sounds. But let's face it: Eating your way through a destination is way more fun. Whether you're sipping on a perfectly aged glass of Merlot in France or grabbing a heaping spoonful of paella in Spain, you're poised to learn about flavors, customs and cultural elements, all in one dish.

So it's no surprise food tourism is on the rise . And with so many people traveling just to eat, a number of hotels and tour groups have decided to up the ante with chef-led tours. Here are some of the best—and most delicious!—ones on earth.

① Participate in a Top Chef Retreat

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Brooke Williamson (@chefbrookew)

The Resort at Paws Up in Montana may be a ranch, but its luxury bent means that traditional campfire meals simply won't do. That's why the resort has enlisted Top Chef season 14 winner Brooke Williamson to lead its Bounty on the Blackfoot program on August 19. Over the course of a full day, Williamson will lead a tour of the Missoula farmers' market, where participants can source the best local ingredients. Then, she'll head up a cooking lesson to help spin that bounty into dinner.

② Explore the Finger Lakes with Danny Boome

Danny Boome, chef and host of Food Network's Rescue Chef, has taken his passion for the culinary arts to the Finger Lakes region in Upstate New York. At Gastronauts Academy , his Rochester teaching kitchen, he leads Devour Day: FLX tours, during which you'll visit two of the region's wineries, enjoy lunch and take a cooking class using local and seasonal ingredients with Boome himself at the New York Wine & Culinary Center .

③ Firelight Foraging with Food Network's Emma Frisch

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Firelight Camps (@firelightcamps)

What people say

Susan  was a delight, a Cleveland native who loves her city and loves sharing it with others. The food was delicious and PLENTIFUL. I would highly recommend this tour and hope that she offers others in the future. We have been on others from other companies, but would look forward to doing a repeat of places with Susan as our leader!

I spent a delightful afternoon touring restaurants, bars and culinary shops in Ohio City with Susan from Relish Cleveland Tours! Her knowledge of this neighborhood was impressive.

My wife, daughter and I have been on food tours in 4 different cities and this one was one of the best. Susan did an excellent job keeping things interesting with a lot of facts and history to go along with the food.

Dollar Tree failed to effectively recall lead-tainted applesauce pouches linked to reports of illness in more than 500 children, leaving the products on some stores shelves for two months, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday.

The FDA sent a warning letter to Dollar Tree this month and placed Negasmart, the Ecuadorian distributor of WanaBana apple cinnamon pouches, under import alerts following the October 2023 recall of the products found to be contaminated with “extremely high” levels of lead and chromium.

Children in 44 states had probable or confirmed cases of elevated blood lead levels after eating the applesauce pouches marketed for toddlers, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The outbreak was declared over in April.

FDA officials sent a warning letter to Dollar Tree Inc. last week saying the WanaBana apple puree products remained on store shelves in several states through late December, two months after the firm was told about the recall. Officials at the Chesapeake, Virginia-based company had said they disallowed sales of the products at registers, but the FDA said that was “not an effective measure” because at least one child in Washington state ate a recalled fruit pouch in a store before an attempted purchase.

Dollar Tree officials said in an email Tuesday that the company is operating under new management and is taking steps to bolster its process “for quickly and effectively executing product recalls.” The company operates more than 16,000 discount stores in 48 states.

FILE - A Dollar Tree store logo is shown on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, in Jackson, Miss. Discount retailer Dollar Tree says it’s looking at strategic options for the Family Dollar stores that it owns, including a possible sale of the segment. Dollar Tree said Wednesday that alternatives also include a spin off or other disposition of the business. Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar nearly a decade ago for more than $8 billion after a bidding war with rival Dollar General. (AP Photo/Rogelio V. Solis, File)

Negasmart was placed under multiple import alerts this month, even though FDA officials said they had no indication that the firm is attempting to import products into the U.S. The action is to ensure that any attempt by the firm to import products would be “flagged” by FDA reviewers and prevented from reaching consumers. Tests showed that cinnamon tested from the plant had lead levels more than 2,000 times higher than a maximum level proposed by the FDA.

Anyone who consumed the recalled pouches should consult with a health care provider, the CDC said. There is no safe level of lead consumption, which can cause serious learning and behavior problems, the agency emphasized.

The pouches include those sold under the WanaBana brand at Dollar Tree stores and online and under the Schnucks and Weis brands in stores. Because they have a long shelf life, they may still be in consumers’ homes. Consumers should not eat or serve the pouches and should discard them.

2024 Memorial Tournament Round 1 updates: Adam Hadwin holds onto Memorial lead after first round

lead food tours

The 2023 Memorial Tournament did not scare Adam Hadwin off from returning to Muirfield Village Golf Course.

After finishing the first round in 2023 3-under par, Hadwin missed the cut after finishing with four bogeys and two double-bogeys in the second round.

Hadwin put the 2023 tournament behind him in the first round of the 2024 Memorial Tournament Thursday, leaving as the clubhouse leader at 6-under part 72 with eight bogeys.

Follow Memorial Round 2 here: 2024 Memorial Tournament Round 2 updates: Adam Hadwin keeps lead into second round

Hadwin is a stroke ahead of Scottie Scheffler , the No. 1 golfer in the world, at 5-under par. Xander Schauffele , Ludvig Aberg , Collin Morikawa and Corey Conners are two strokes behind Hadwin at 4-under.

“I feel pretty comfortable right now over the golf ball with kind of the entire game,” Hadwin said. “I never felt rushed. I never felt that as I kept making birdies, like I was getting ahead of myself or anything like that. Very comfortable. I feel in a lot better position to kind of handle any sort of adversity that may come or when it comes, because I feel like it will come around this place. There’s just too many holes where the margin for error is so small that you can feel like you hit a good shot and get absolutely screwed. I feel like mentally I’m in a really good place right now to be able to handle that and move forward and accept it. And so we’ll show up tomorrow and get ready and see what it holds.”

The second round of the Memorial Tournament tees off at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Here’s what happened in the first round Thursday:

Microdose mushroom chocolates have hospitalized people in 8 states, FDA warns

Health officials are again warning people not to consume a brand of microdosing mushroom-infused treats after the U.S. Federal Food and Drug Association (FDA) announced even more people have become ill after eating them.

The FDA issued an initial warning on June 7 , saying a 'severe' illness associated with some Diamond Shruumz Microdosing Mushroom Chocolate Bars had landed several people in the hospital suffering medical issues including seizures, vomiting and abnormal heart rate.

Originally, the FDA, in tandem with the Centers for Disease Control and America’s Poison Centers and state and local partners, said it was investigating eight illnesses reported from four states, six of which landed people in the hospital.

In a recent update, the FDA has reported additional illnesses, bringing the total up to 12 reported cases and 10 hospitalizations across eight states. It also expanded its warning from focusing on Diamond-Shruumz chocolates to include all Diamond-Shruumz products.

Here is what you need to know about health officials' warnings including which products are making people sick.

Which mushroom candies are making people sick?

All Diamond Shruumz-brand Microdosing sweets are included in the FDA warning, including Diamond Shruumz-brand Chocolate Bars, Cones, and Gummies.

All types of the Diamond Shruumz Chocolate Bars and Gummies, both of which come in various quantities and flavors, are subject to the warning. All flavors of Diamond Shruumz Cones, which are ice cream cone-style treats, are also covered by the warning.

What states are affected by Diamond Shruumz Microdosing Mushroom products

  •  Alabama (1 case)
  • Arizona (4)
  • Indiana (2)
  • Kentucky (1)
  • Missouri (1)
  • Pennsylvania (1)
  • South Carolina (1)

Where are the mushroom candies sold?

The candies are sold nationwide online and in person at a variety of retail locations including smoke and vape shops, as well as at retailers selling hemp-derived products including cannabidiol (CBD) or delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8 THC).

A complete list of retailers selling the product is not known, the FDA reported. The investigation is ongoing.

What are the symptoms of the Diamond Shruumz candy illness?

According to the FDA, all 12 people who fell ill have reported seeking medical care and 10 have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported as of June 11.

According to the Diamond Shruumz website, the chocolate bars are made with a "primo proprietary blend of nootropic and functional mushrooms." The website also claims its products are "Lab Tested For Potency, Quality ,  And Safety."

It was not immediately known what caused the illness but people who became ill after eating the product reported a variety of symptoms including:

  • Central nervous system depression (loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness)
  • Abnormal heart rates
  • Hypertension (Blood pressure too high) and hypotension (Blood pressure too low)

Another variant? There's another COVID variant you should know about: KP.3 now makes up 25% of COVID cases

FDA: Throw the affected mushroom candies right away

The FDA advises safely disposing of any Diamond Shruumz-brand products. Consumers who may have the products in their homes should immediately discard them if found. Diamond Shruumz products should not be eaten, sold or served.

The agency also advised parents and adults to discuss the advisory with children and teenagers, as the products are marketed as candy and may appeal to younger consumers.

Retailers should not sell or distribute any flavor of Diamond Shruumz-brand items and should hold any stock in a secure location until additional instructions can be provided on how to return or safely dispose of the product.

Anyone who becomes ill after consuming Diamond Shruumz chocolates, gummies or cones should call the  Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222 and/or contact their healthcare provider immediately.

Rory McIlroy unable to overcome seven-shot deficit Sunday, encouraged by T4 finish at RBC Canadian Open

Change Text Size

World No. 3 Rory McIlroy came up just short of his third RBC Canadian Open title after starting the final round seven shots back of the lead Sunday at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ontario. McIlroy opened the tournament with rounds of 66-72-65 before making his Sunday charge.

“Three really good rounds of golf, one not-so-good one," McIlroy said. "Felt a little out of sorts on Friday.

“Did a good range session and sort of rectified it. So, yeah, overall, three rounds out of four were really good, and just that one disappointing one on Friday. But overall after a week off where I didn't feel like I prepared as well as I probably could have, it was a solid week."

McIlroy teed off Saturday and Sunday alongside three-time PGA TOUR winner Tom Kim. The 21-year-old Kim noted how much he loves playing with McIlroy, and it showed in Kim’s play with weekend rounds of 65-64 to record his best result of the year. Kim and McIlroy both finished T4 after McIlroy also shot a final-round 64 in bogey-free fashion.

RBC Canadian Open champion Robert MacIntyre is all too familiar with McIlroy’s ability to chase down a lead on Sunday. The two also went head-to-head at last year’s final round of the Genesis Scottish Open, where McIlroy birdied three of the final five holes at the Renaissance Club to edge MacIntyre by one stroke.

McIlroy's first RBC Canadian Open title came in 2019 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club. That victory was highlighted by a final-round 61 that saw the four-time major champion dust the field by seven shots.

Rory McIlroy holes 26-footer for birdie at RBC Canadian

MacIntyre’s seven-shot lead over McIlroy to begin Sunday was not as unbeatable as MacIntyre hoped, which is why MGM still gave McIlroy 18/1 odds to win going into the final round at Hamilton.

“I don’t think so,” McIlroy told CBS when asked if the final-round 64 was enough to catch MacIntyre.

“I had a couple of really good opportunities on the way in. My putt on No. 14 just missed and I had a good opportunity on No. 15, too.”

McIlroy also couldn’t discount what it would mean to see MacIntyre win his first PGA TOUR title after the adversity MacIntyre has faced this season.

“Bob’s a good friend of mine,” McIlroy said.

“We were Ryder Cup teammates and it would be really good to see him get the job done," he added. "Bob and I, we're separated by a body of water in the Irish Sea, but we're actually not that far away from each other where we grew up in Oban, Scotland, and Belfast, Northern Ireland. It's a big culture shock compared to the place where he grew up in Oban. You know, traveling around America, it's a different world. Some people adapt a little quicker than others. Everyone has to try to find their right rhythm. It looks like Bob's still figuring that out. It would be great to see him hang on and get that first PGA TOUR win.”

Rory McIlroy reaches in two to set up birdie at RBC Canadian

MacIntyre hung on his earn his first PGA TOUR win with a final-round, two-under 68 to finish one stroke ahead of Ben Griffin. McIlroy settled for his fourth consecutive top-10 finish at the RBC Canadian Open, and discussed how much national championships mean to him.

“History and tradition and legacy are a really big part of the game of golf," McIlroy said. "This is one of the oldest championships in the world, as is the Scottish Open. The Opens definitely mean something else. It's great that so many people, Golf Canada, and RBC have gotten behind this RBC Canadian Open and made it special. As I said, it's a pleasure to come up here and play every year and I'm going to keep doing that until they tell me I can't come over the border."

McIlroy’s steady play has flourished since his maintenance, touch-up work with Butch Harmon this year before winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Shane Lowry and his fourth Wells Fargo Championship. McIlroy’s T4 finish at the RBC Canadian Open comes two weeks before McIlroy will try to win his fifth career major championship at the 124th U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

2024 Open Championship odds, picks, field: Surprising predictions by same golf model that nailed 13 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the british open 2024 10,000 times and revealed its surprising pga tour golf picks.

rory-usatsi.jpg

The top golfers in the world will have one more chance to win a major this season when the 2024 Open Championship begins on Thursday, July 18. Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland will host the tournament for the 10th time and first time since 2016, with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler listed as the 5-1 favorite in the 2024 Open Championship odds. Scheffler is coming off his worst performance of the season, barely making the cut before finishing outside the top 40 in the U.S. Open. However, he has won five PGA Tour tournaments this season, so can you afford to fade him with your 2024 Open Championship prediction?

Rory McIlroy is coming off a devastating runner-up finish in the U.S. Open, missing several short putts in the final three holes. He is one of the top 2024 Open Championship contenders at 13-2, while U.S. Open winner Bryson DeChambeau is third in the 2024 British Open odds at 11-1. Before locking in your 2024 Open Championship picks, be sure to  see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 13 majors entering the weekend, including the 2024 Masters, its third Masters in a row, and this year's PGA Championship and U.S. Open. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the Open Championship 2024 field locked in, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2024 Open Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Open Championship: Rory McIlroy (13-2), the 2014 Open Championship winner and one of the top favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top five. McIlroy's 10-year major championship drought is well documented, which made his mishaps down the stretch of the U.S. Open even more painful. He missed multiple putts within four feet in the final three holes, leading to a brutal runner-up finish.

It is going to be difficult for McIlroy to overcome those lingering emotions in the final major of the year, especially since the Open Championship brings its own unique pressure for the Northern Irishman. He has finished outside the top 40 in two of his last four appearances at this tournament, and he did not crack the top 10 at the Masters or PGA Championship earlier this season. McIlroy ranks outside the top 50 on the PGA Tour in GIR percentage, which is another reason why the model is fading him in this year's final major. See who else to fade here .

Another surprise: Tommy Fleetwood, a 21-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Fleetwood is one of the top golfers in the world who is still seeking his first major championship, as he has seven top-five finishes in majors. The 33-year-old has been particularly impressive in the Open Championship, carding three top-10s in his last four appearances.

He finished in solo second place in 2019, T4 in 2022 and T10 in 2023. Fleetwood has been inside the top 30 in all three majors this season, including a T3 at the Masters and T16 at the U.S. Open. He is comfortable playing on this type of golf course, which is another reason to back him with Open Championship 2024 picks.  See who else to back here .

How to make 2024 Open Championship picks

The model is also targeting two other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big.  You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Open Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Open Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Open Championship leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 13 golf majors, including the last three Masters and all three majors this year .

More than 30% of UK shoppers have seen a theft take place in a shop in the past year, data from Retail Insight suggests.

A poll of more than 1,000 consumers also found the average shopper had witnessed four instances of theft in stores in London.

According to the Association of Convenience Stores, there was a 409% increase in shoplifting last year, to 5.6 million incidents.

"There's little doubt that shoplifting poses a challenging and costly issue for retailers, many of whom are already giving away margin to keep the cost of everyday foods as low as possible for customers amidst cost of living pressures," Paul Boyle, chief executive of Retail Insight, said.

A ballot is under way that could see Amazon recognise a trade union in the UK for the first time.

Workers will eventually vote on whether they want the union, GMB, to represent them.

GMB needs 40% of them to vote in its favour for Amazon to recognise it.

If the union succeeds, it would mean Amazon would negotiate with GMB leadership over on terms, pay and conditions for workers.

Ballot papers will be sent out on 3 July, with workplace voting starting on 8 July, lasting for six days.

The result of the ballot is expected on 15 July.

Almost one in five workers have had no change in their pay since the start of the cost of living crisis, new research claims.

Jobs site Indeed said its survey of 2,000 people also found that two in five revealed they were struggling to make ends meet.

One in five said their salary had not changed since 2021, while almost one in seven said their pay had fallen since then.

Jack Kennedy, senior economist at Indeed, said: "After grappling with the cost of living crisis for over two years, it's no surprise that wages are front of mind for voters.

"There's a clear call from the British people for the elected government to further ease financial pressures, and we'd expect this to remain front of mind for the public long after the winning party is decided."

By Daniel Binns, business reporter

Taylor Swift's shows in London will boost the economy by £300m, officials have claimed.

The US star will perform three gigs at London's Wembley Stadium this Friday, Saturday and Sunday - before returning to the venue in August for a further five dates.

The sold-out shows will be attended by a total of nearly 640,000 people.

The Greater London Authority estimates fans will spend an average of £471 a show, with many travelling from around the world or other parts of the country to watch.

The capital's mayor Sadiq Khan said he was "delighted" the 34-year-old was playing more shows in the city than anywhere else in the world during her Eras Tour.

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee was never going to cut interest rates today. Not two weeks before a general election.

Cutting the cost of borrowing would have been perceived as highly political, potentially offering support to the government, even though some Conservative politicians, such as the former business secretary Jacob Rees-Mogg, sought to argue ahead of today's decision that not cutting Bank rate could equally be perceived as "a political decision against the government".

So it was no surprise to see the MPC maintain Bank rate at 5.25% or, indeed, for the composition of the vote, at 7-2, to remain unchanged from last time around, with uber-dove Swati Dhingra and Sir Dave Ramsden, again, outnumbered in voting for Bank rate to be cut to 5%.

The MPC also went out of its way to show how it is finely attuned to criticisms of bias one way or the other.

The minutes note: "The committee noted that the timing of the general election on 4 July was not relevant to its decision at this meeting, which would as usual be made on the basis of what was judged necessary to achieve the 2% inflation target sustainably in the medium term."

Why did the MPC vote to hold?

Leaving aside the politics, there were very good reasons why most of the MPC voted for no change today.

Chief among these was the fact that, although the headline rate of Consumer Prices Inflation in May returned to the Bank's target rate of 2% for the first time since July 2021, services inflation remains uncomfortably high at 5.7%.

That will have raised alarm bells on the MPC about the risk of so-called "second round effects", whereby firms and workers respond to higher prices by themselves seeking to raise their prices or their wages and not least because services make up four-fifths of the UK economy.

The MPC minutes noted today that services inflation was "somewhat higher than projected" when the Bank published its most recent inflation report only last month.

The minutes added: "This strength in part reflected prices that are index-linked or regulated, which are typically changed only annually, and volatile components."

Inflation likely to rise again

The MPC is also very wary of the possibility that inflation is likely to begin creeping higher again later in the year.

That is due to so-called "base effects" - the year-on-year comparison - and the fact that, in the second half of last year, the price of some goods in the inflation basket were falling or, at least, not rising as rapidly as they are expected to in the second half of last year.

A good example of that, which stood out in the inflation figures published on Wednesday, is unleaded petrol - a litre of which cost 144.4p in May last year but which cost 148.8p in May this year.

More broadly, the economy is growing more strongly than the Bank has been expecting, as are several indicators of economic activity, among them spending by households on repair and maintenance of their homes and consumer confidence.

Wage inflation

The other major concern for the MPC is that wage inflation, at 5.9% during the three months to the end of April, remains too high for its liking.

The latest report from the Bank's network of regional agents - whose briefings are closely studied by the MPC's members - suggest that recruitment difficulties are "near to their pre-COVID levels" which represents "a historically high level".

Other survey data has also persuaded the MPC to conclude the labour market remains "a little tighter than official data" suggests.

The minutes highlight concerns that near-term pay growth may moderate by less than the Bank was expecting in its May report.

Consumer-facing businesses, which are most exposed to the National Living Wage, in particular are having to pay more to employees.

That said, a reduction in Bank rate is coming, with the MPC noting: "The restrictive stance of monetary policy is weighing on activity in the real economy, is leading to a looser labour market and is bearing down on inflationary pressures.

"Key indicators of inflation persistence have continued to moderate, although they remain elevated."

When will interest rates be cut?

The timing of that reduction is now going to be more fiercely debated than ever. Yesterday's inflation data, with that unexpectedly strong reading for services inflation, pushed market expectations for the timing of that first cut out from August to September.

Today's minutes, though, have persuaded some market participants to conclude that an August reduction in Bank rate may be back on.

The key line in the minutes that have raised that prospect was that, among some MPC members who voted for no change this month, "the policy decision at this meeting was finely balanced".

So the big takeaway from today's meeting is that the door remains open to an August reduction in Bank rate.

The market was putting the probability of an August rate cut at 30% before the meeting. It is now placing a 60% probability on that.

But an August rate cut is not nailed on - and politics may yet rear its head - and the MPC will be watching closely to how markets react to the election result.

As Julian Howard, chief multi-asset investment strategist at GAM Investments, put it: "A potential Labour landslide could unsettle markets, in particular the currency.

"Sir Keir Starmer has come under pressure in recent days on the issue of tax and spending. Sterling will appreciate neither unfunded spending, nor a heavier tax burden."

Some more reaction to bring you now, with experts at Capital Economics suggesting the "pieces of the puzzle are almost in place" for a rate cut.

It said "several developments implied a rate cut is getting closer", citing the two members who voted to cut rates by 25 percentage points to 5.00% and, interestingly, a lack of "hawkish" rhetoric in the minutes released alongside the decision.

"Despite the recent run of stronger inflation and activity data, the language in today's minutes was not much more hawkish than in May," Capital said.

"The minutes continued to suggest 'indicators of inflation persistence had continued to moderate' and that a range of indicators suggest pay growth had continued to ease.

"As a result, we still think there is a good chance of a rate cut in August and that rates will fall to 3.00% in 2025, rather than to 4.00% as investors expect."

We've been reading over the minutes from today's Monetary Policy Committee meeting - and here's what the governor had to say on the decision...

"It's good news that inflation has returned to our 2% target," Andrew Bailey said, referring to the data released yesterday.

"We need to be sure that inflation will stay low and that's why we've decided to hold rates at 5.25% for now."

Some reaction to bring you now to the Bank of England's decision to hold the interest rate at 5.25%.

Jonathan Bone, lead mortgage adviser at  Better.co.uk , criticises the decision: "Borrowers have waited three long years for inflation to return to the 2% target.

"Now that it's finally happened, the excitement has dampened as underlying price pressures in the economy have not slowed as quickly as expected, and the ongoing election likely hasn't helped either.

He says the Bank of England is "obstinate" and "unwilling to take action despite widespread criticism", adding: "Those with mortgages are desperate for relief."

Meanwhile, Tobias Gruber, chief executive  of  My Community Finance , says the decision means savers have more time to review their options.

He offers some advice to those looking around for savings options: "There are still excellent opportunities available for fixed-rate savings, with some providers offering interest rates of over 5%.

"If you don't need immediate access to your money, locking in a competitive fixed rate now can protect you from future base rate cuts."

The Bank of England's nine-person Monetary Policy Committee again voted 7-2 in favour of holding interest rates at 5.25%.

That's the same split as when the committee last met.

Reacting to the news, our economics and data editor Ed Conway says: "Everyone now is in a kind of holding pattern until August, when the next meeting takes place.

"That is the moment where people think there could be a cut.

"We're going to potentially be waiting until August and maybe even [as far away as] November -  it really depends on what happens with the data."

As expected, the Bank of England has held interest rates at 5.25% for the seventh time in a row.

The Monetary Policy Committee's vote in favour of maintaining the 16-year high in rates had been widely expected by economists and financial markets.

What does the decision mean?

This will come as a blow to borrowers, who will continue to pay a high rate on any loans they take out - like mortgages.

It's not bad news for all, however, as higher interest rates increase the return on savings.

Mark Hicks, head of Active Savings at investment platform Hargreaves Lansdown, said: "Right now, you can still earn more than 5% on everything from easy access accounts to those fixed for up to two years.

"Unfortunately, most people won't be making anything like this, because high street easy access branch rates are far less generous, and in most cases, they pay less than inflation (currently 2%).

"At times like this it's key to check out the rates from online banks and savings platforms, which tend to pay more than the high street giants."

Check out our 6.36am post for our latest Savings Guide - as Savings Champion founder Anna Bowes gives her top three tips for savers right now.

The average first-time buyer needs a household income of more than £60,000 to get on to the property ladder, according to Zoopla.

It estimated that the typical first-time buyer needs £14,900 more than five years ago and £2,400 more than a year ago - a total of £60,600.

The analysis was based on average asking prices of first-time buyer homes for sale on Zoopla of around £250,000.

Those earning figures are based on having a 20% deposit to hand - it would likely need to be much higher if a first-time buyer did not have so much cash to put down up front.

Startlingly, in London, Zoopla found first-time buyers would need a household income of at least £103,000.

In Wales, they would need £38,800 and in Scotland £31,500, according to the calculations.

Izabella Lubowiecka, senior property researcher at Zoopla, said: "The challenges facing first-time buyers are not the same across the UK.

"Access to homeownership requires lower incomes in much of Wales, northern England and Scotland.

"The greatest challenges are in southern England, especially London where first-time buyers are already buying cheaper homes than the average in an effort to try and improve affordability."

There's not much major movement on the London stock market this morning ahead of the Bank of England's announcement on interest rates at midday.

The Bank is widely expected to hold rates at 5.25% for the seventh time in a row.

The FTSE 100 is slightly up by nearly 0.2%, while the FTSE 250 has risen almost 0.3%.

Rolls-Royce is among the top climbers, with its stock rising by 2% in early trading.

Sainsbury's has also gained almost 1% after the supermarket giant announced it plans to sell most of its banking business to NatWest.

On the flip side, top fallers include water firm United Utilities, which has slipped 2% on Thursday morning.

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.27 US or €1.18.

The cost of a barrel of Brent Crude has topped $85 (£67) this morning, as the price of oil continues to creep slowly up.

Experience North End's hidden gems with debut of New Bedford food tour. Here's what to expect.

lead food tours

NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford Food Tours is thrilled to announce the launch of their new North End Food Tour in New Bedford. The tour will take visitors to some of the best-hidden gems in the North End of the city, showcasing the diverse and delicious cuisine.

"I have to say that I am just so very excited about this new tour," said co-owner Pamela Shwartz.

"When we first came up with the idea of the food tours, everyone we talked to, including locals, would mention the North End and all of its amazing hidden gems," she said.

Shwartz said she has always known that the North End has some of the best food in the city, but people were more interested in exploring the downtown scene first.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Working with TDI to connect with North End restaurants

"We weren't sure how to start a food tour there. The main reason being the language barrier, which can be intimidating for many people," she said.

To overcome this hurdle, Shwartz said she worked with Rosa Mendes, the TDI fellow for Mass Development.

According to Shwartz, the TDI (Transformative Development Initiative) program is working towards revitalizing the city's North End as a cultural and food hub. Mendes has been instrumental in helping them plan the tour and communicate with the restaurant owners in the North End.

"She believes it aligns perfectly with the TDI program's mission of promoting the North End as a food hub. So, we're really excited to be a part of this amazing campaign and showcase the diverse food options in the North End," Shwartz added.

What to expect on the North End food tour

Starting June 22, the North End Food Tour will feature a variety of cuisines, including Mexican, Guatemalan, Honduran, Portuguese and Cape Verdean.

"We will be starting at La Raza, a Mexican restaurant, and then heading to Casa Lempira, a Honduran restaurant, where visitors will get to try out an assortment of fresh juices, including cashew juice," said Shwartz.

Next, the food tour will make its way on foot to Europa Cafe, which serves authentic Portuguese food. Then, it will visit Morna Lounge and Grill, a Cape Verdean restaurant, before heading back to the Central American hotspot, Restaurante y Tortilleria Guatemalteco, for some fresh tortillas.

More: Drummer Joaquin Santos to honor Juneteenth all month long. Here's his plan.

Aside from the delicious food, the tour will also include stops at key landmarks, including the beautiful church in the North End. They will also showcase the changes taking place in the North End, such as the renovations at the Capitol Theater, which is run by the Community Development Corporation.

"And finally, we will end on a sweet note at La Fruta Loca, where visitors can indulge in their delicious mangonada, a popular Mexican dessert," she added.

Hoping to introduce people to the love in the North End

Shwartz said she wants visitors to leave the tour with a newfound appreciation for the North End and its vibrant, diverse community.

"The North End has always been a welcoming place for immigrants, and this tour truly reflects the cultural melting pot that it is," she said.

"We want people to come with an open mind and an empty stomach, and leave with a full heart and a satisfied palate."
