Ross and rocky lynch discuss recording and life on the road with the fader for an exclusive tour diary q&a..

Ross and Rocky Lynch, better known on the road and in the studio as The Driver Era, are in a constant state of evolution. The alternative pop duo first emerged from the family-driven pop rock band R5 in 2018, setting out on a path to creative self-discovery by carving out their own lane as a pair. Their debut album X landed them on tour, playing to rooms of fans buzzing with electric energy. The shows got bigger, and their creative spark got more intense. In the studio, they translated that feeling into perspective-shifting takes on romance and navigating early adulthood.

When they found themselves languishing at home during the early months of the pandemic, the forced pause unexpectedly led them straight into the creative process of their sophomore record Girlfriend . Pulling on experiences and stalled ideas dating back to 2016, Ross and Rocky challenged themselves in the recording and reinvigorated them as musicians, blending influence from pop, rock, and hip-hop. It marks the first record the pair have created where they serve as the sole songwriters and producers, their passion for the craft shining through a stacked tracklist on songs like “Heart of Mine” and “Leave Me Feeling Confident.”

The time in lockdown altered The Driver Era’s creative process, allowing the band to tug on a string that would unravel into their most clarifying project yet. With only a few dates left on their Girlfriend tour, The Driver Era spoke with The FADER about finding reassurance as songwriters and producers, getting back into the swing of touring, and challenging themselves to make something brand new.

The FADER: When you’ve been making music for as long as you both have, in whatever form of a band that may have been, there can’t really be that same sophomore follow-up conversation for The Driver Era. Was there a sense of freedom that went into creating Girlfriend without that pressure?

Ross: We've approached all of The Driver Era with a lot of freedom and a lot of spontaneity because that's how we like to create. That's how we feel like we get the best product. And yeah, some of our past projects have definitely had a little bit more restraint, a little bit more cooks in the kitchen on the label side of things and everything like that. But our current situation is very much just Rocky and I in the studio making whatever feels good at the time.

Rocky: Yeah, it's funny because we're on tour right now. Immediately when we get on tour, I'm just like, “oh man, I want to get in the studio.” I love being on tour, I'm having a ton of fun, but it immediately kickstarts like, “oh, I wanna write something.”

We’re living through an age where, especially over these last almost two years now, people have so much time and access to listen to new music – but there’s almost an overwhelming amount of it readily at our fingertips. As songwriters and producers, how does that need to capture people’s attention factor into your creation process?

Ross: I feel like we've always had a knack for keeping people engaged in the song. Obviously they're our fans so they would say something like this, but a lot of our fans say that we have no skip songs, which is honestly a great compliment. But I think we've always been good at keeping the songs entertaining and keeping the fans engaged in listening to the whole thing. And so I think that is a big part of making music now, nowadays – just keeping people on their toes and moving quickly and shorter songs.

Rocky: Also, when we are writing, there's not much of like, “okay, how can we grab someone's attention?” That's not really ever a thought. It's kind of, you know, what is magical in this moment with this track you're working on or whatever. And you're kind of just trying to shoot as much of that energy into it as possible. I think that's the byproduct of writing good music, just trying to do our best. That will happen if you make something that's worth listening to.

With Girlfriend in particular, you’ve both managed to capture these huge feelings and emotional breakthroughs in a way that sounds equally as all-encompassing as it feels. How does this record function as a capsule of this era of your lives?

Ross: I feel like it's just exactly as your question states, it is a capsule for this era in our lives. With us honestly learning so much from our girlfriends and them teaching us to be better men and then us writing about that was a big part of this record. And you know, just wanting to get better at writing and [becoming] a better musician, a better songwriter and just trying to do our best to be authentic in our expression of our feelings in our music.

Performing live has become such an integral part of The Driver Era’s DNA. What was your experience heading into this album without knowing for sure if playing shows would be on the table?

Ross: Honestly, we weren't really thinking of it much when we were in the studio pretty much for a long time. So we ended up with a lot of mid-tempo songs, which is fine – we love all of our music. But I think since this tour, we'll probably put even more focus on the fact that we want the shows to have a lot of energy. So a lot of these songs that we're writing right now are very dancey, they're very uptempo.

Rocky: I know Ross has said they're dancey, but it's like, they're actual dance tracks. Like, Swedish House Mafia could almost put out one of these. And while making them, it wasn't really like, "yo let's do some dance tracks," but somehow we arrived there.

Tell me about that first time getting back on stage after all of this –– how were you both feeling throughout the day and what do you remember about that first moment stepping on stage again?

Ross: Mixed feelings. I was excited, maybe a little more nervous than usual, you know? But we literally are breaching like 400 shows at this point in our career. So it's pretty comfortable.

Rocky: Because no one had really toured for a couple years, even our crew, the very first [show] was like, "oh, alright, what's gonna happen?" And then once that was kind of out the way, it was like, “oh yeah, that's why we've been doing this for a while and we kind of understand how to do it.”

Ross: You know what, now that I'm thinking about it, that Minneapolis show was actually incredible. Cause the fans that had come were just on cloud nine, so energetic. And I think there was actually a lot of excitement in the room. I do actually remember feeling overwhelmed and excited. And it was almost like a realization of why we put all this effort into this – it's because of that euphoria of presence that you get when you're on stage.

This entire tour so far has been extensively documented both by you and your team and the fans – there’s a full hour and a half recording of your Chicago show on YouTube. Why was it important to have such extensive memories of these shows?

Ross: I think that's just how people operate today with social media, with YouTube. And then for us, obviously as a business, it makes a lot of sense. Personally, I like to look back and definitely have all the memories of all the cities and shows that we went to. Because this is a really cool experience and we always try our best to appreciate it and it's great to have documentation to look back on.

I think the normal setup for most bands is they have bigger teams and they have more people doing more jobs, whereas, in our camp, it's very tight-knit. It's a very minimal amount of people doing a lot of work, a lot of really just amazing work. So we really would love to show off a little bit more of that because we think that it's pretty special and it's a cool story. We're really proud of this little group that we got going and we think everyone's doing a great job. So we wanna show it off a little bit more.

Produced by Live Nation, the run of shows kicks off on Tuesday, April 2 at Roxian Theatre in McKees Rocks, PA and makes stops in Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Tennessee, North Carolina, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Quebec before wrapping up in Toronto, ON at HISTORY on May 8.

THE DRIVER ERA: Live On Tour follows the duo’s impressive 2023 touring year – after concluding a worldwide headlining tour in 2022, they sold out The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and New York City’s Pier 17, as well performed sets at internationally renowned festivals such as Mad Cool Festival in Spain, Pinkpop in the Netherlands, Rock Werchter in Belgium, Lollapalooza Paris, NOSAlive in Portugal and Osheaga Festival in Montreal. Stateside, they played festivals including Wonderbus Festival in Columbus, OH and Oceans Calling in Ocean City, MD.

On February 22nd, The Driver Era released their first single of 2024, “Get Off My Phone.” The track marks what is set to be a major year for the band,  seeing the duo stepping into personal lyricism and enhancing their alternative sound. “Get Off My Phone” follows on the heels of “ Rumors ,” which has earned over 5 million streams since its release. Most recently, the duo released their first live album, live at the greek , immortalizing their June 11, 2023 sold-out performance at the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.

The Driver Era, comprising of brothers Ross and Rocky Lynch, is getting ready for their tour across North America, aptly titled “The Driver Era: Live On Tour.” The announcement comes with the release of their latest single, “Get Off My Phone.”

Ross and Rocky Lynch Announce The Driver Era U.S. Tour (Exclusive)

The rock star brothers revealed the exciting news exclusively with ET on Tuesday.

Ross Lynch and Rocky Lynch are hitting the road together this year!

The rock star brothers, who make up musical duo The Driver Era, stopped by ET on Tuesday to exclusively reveal that they are embarking on a U.S. tour.

After teasing via Twitter that a " big announcement " was coming, the two shared the news during a YouTube Live interview with ET's Katie Krause.

"I bet, honestly, nobody expected it, because I don't know if we fully expected it," Ross, 23, exclaimed. "We basically made this decision because music means so much to us and a lot of our creative attention, basically, has been put in other places."

"Like, I've been in Vancouver doing Netflix [aka playing Harvey on  Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ]," he added. "Rocky actually has been holding down the fort, releasing songs like 'Low.' I don't know if you guys have heard that yet. Check that out! That's legitimately my favorite song."

Ross and Rocky also revealed that they plan to release new music before the tour officially kicks off March 13 in Boston, Massachusetts. "Right now we're writing, we're in the studio and making music," Rocky, 24, confirmed. "We played a couple festivals last year ... and there was a couple songs that we actually finished, we just hadn't released, that we played at those shows that were fun. So, there will probably be a couple of those that we play."

"There will be a full band, live drums, guitars, the whole extravaganza, and we'll decide covers and other stuff we want to play," Ross added. "I've got a phone full of songs that I've written, too. We just need to put them out, basically. ... Ideally, we'd like to have a body of work to go on tour with, that's what we're in the studio working on right now."

Ross and Rocky created The Driver Era in March 2018 following the success of their pop-rock band, R5, which was made up of two of their other siblings, Riker and Rydel Lynch, and their best friend, Ellington Ratliff. Since then, Ross and Rocky have released three singles under the new moniker -- " Preacher Man ," " Afterglow " and " Low ."

So now with a new tour (which they plan to expand to Europe once they have more time), is there any chance we'll get to see them reunite onstage with their former R5 bandmates?

"We'll have maybe a few special appearances," Ross teased, saying, "for sure," when asked if any of those would be family members.

"Maybe related, maybe a close homie," Rocky added. "Yeah, who knows!"

Ross and Rocky Lynch of the Driver Era Plot North American Tour (EXCLUSIVE)

Los Angeles-based duo the Driver Era is hitting the road for a 17-city tour across North America.

With over three albums to date, brothers Ross and Rocky Lynch will again begin touring on April 2 in Pittsburgh's Roxian Theatre and hit venues in New York, New Jersey, Quebec and more before wrapping in Toronto on May 8.

Tickets for the trek will be available to the general public starting March 1 at 10 a.m. local time with additional presales will begin Feb. 27.

The Live Nation-produced jaunt follows their headlining tour in 2022, and sold-out shows in New York City's Pier 17 and at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. The latter resulted in their first concert film and live album, "Live At the Greek."

In the last week, the indie pop artists released their first single of 2024, "Get Off My Phone," on the heels of their funk-infused "Rumors." The pair have also expanded internationally in the last year, playing various international festivals such as Mad Cool Festival in Spain, Pinkpop in the Netherlands, Rock Werchter in Belgium and Lollapalooza Paris, among others.

Even before their debut as a duo in 2018, Ross and Rocky were performing as a part of their family band, R5. Ross is also an actor, starring in Netflix's "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," the biopic "My Friend Dahmer" and more. He was also most recently featured in the music video for Troye Sivan's "One Of Your Girls."

Troye Sivan has revealed a U.K. and European tour set for 2024. Check out the extensive run of dates below.

The 17 stop run will begin in Portugal on May 29 before moving throughout Europe. Sivan will then hit the U.K. on June 22 at the Manchester AO Arena. Sivan will eventually wrap up the run in Birmingham. Tickets for the shows go on sale on December 8 at 9am BST. More dates are expected to be announced soon. Last month, Sivan released his highly-anticipated third studio album,  S omething To Give Each Other , which celebrates sex, community, queerness, and love, among other things.

The record emerged from the tribulations of the last few years as the Australian pop star found himself rewiring with the joy of human connection and dance music.

Something To Give Each Other  was preceded by the singles  “Rush,”  which has amassed over 215 million combined global streams to date, and  “Got Me Started.” Upon release, that track eclipsed its predecessor as the biggest streamed song of the week.

“Rush” scored early praise from  The New York Times , who hailed it as “a sweaty, kinetic, gloriously hedonistic summer dance floor anthem.”  Pitchfork  said, “Sivan, already an expert at making winky, slyly subtextual pop songs, manages to inject this trope with virility, producing a sublime, orgiastic summer anthem.”

The star also shared a new music video for the track “One Of Your Girls” when the album was released, in which a series of men appear in black and white – including Sivan. As the video progresses, the singer introduces a new drag persona, dancing around co-star Ross Lynch.

Something To Give Each Other earned more rave reviews, with The Guardian  writing: “This is one of the year’s best and most distinctive pop albums, and it’s to Sivan’s credit that even as the genre speeds up around him, he’s keeping pace while making sure to feel the breeze rush by.”
