Haribo starts making gummi bears in Pleasant Prairie, but no tours (yet)

German candy maker Haribo has opened its production facility in Pleasant Prairie.

In the 1800s, German immigrants arrived in Wisconsin in droves and the influence of German culture can be seen in town names, summer festivals and the state's love of beer.

Now, Germans have brought a new influence to Wisconsin — Haribo Gummi Bears .

Sure, Haribo gummies have been available in the U.S. since the 1980s. But last week, for the first time, the company opened a production factory in North America.

Located in Pleasant Prairie , the 500,000-square-foot factory is part of a multiphase project that will also include an administrative building.

When did the Haribo factory open in Pleasant Prairie?

Production began in late July at the building along Interstate 94 that features a massive Haribo logo emblazoned on the side of the building. The company said the factory was opened to meet the growing demand by American consumers.

“I started my career with Haribo more than 20 years ago, and I’m so proud to be part of the team that made the dream of a U.S. factory come true,” said Hakan Zor, chief production officer, Haribo of America.

What will be produced at the Haribo factory in Pleasant Prairie?

Haribo said the factory will be almost solely dedicated to producing Goldbears — the brand's most popular snack.

With 200 employees working at the factory, the company predicts that hundreds of tons of Goldbears will be produced at the new location this year.

Does the new Haribo factory mean new flavors will be coming to the U.S.?

While the factory will mainly be used to produce Goldbears, Haribo announced that it'll also be introducing new Wild Berry Goldbears into the American market.

While the new product will be produced in Germany, the presence of the new factory could mean new flavors will be more common, since Haribo said it wants to grow and diversify production at the facility.

Can you take tours of the Haribo factory in Pleasant Prairie?

Unfortunately, Haribo said tours of the factory won't be available “in order to abide by food safety regulations and protect all stakeholders.”

However, the company didn't dismiss the possibility of running tours at the facility in the future.

Why did Haribo choose Pleasant Prairie?

The company said it chose Pleasant Prairie as its U.S. manufacturing location because of its “shared values of quality, trust and independence, coupled with the work ethic of the region and warm welcome from the community.”

Haribo also said it intends to work with the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Carthage College and Gateway Technical College to provide scholarship and internship opportunities.

Haribo® opens first factory in u.s., introduces new gummi innovation for summer, wild berry goldbears®.

The state-of-the-art facility produces HARIBO Goldbears and continues HARIBO's mission of inspiring childlike happiness for millions of fans

ROSEMONT, Ill. , July 27, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- HARIBO® has officially begun gummi production at its first-ever North American manufacturing facility, located in Pleasant Prairie, Wis. The brand-new, state-of-the-art factory was created to meet the growing demand by American consumers of the beloved gummi brand, which produces over 25 varieties of gummi treats for the U.S. and more than 1,200 types globally.

Currently, the 500,000-square-foot factory is focused on producing HARIBO's iconic Goldbears®, with plans to expand production in the future. The facility currently employs nearly 200 Associates and produces hundreds of tons of Goldbears.

The Pleasant Prairie facility marks HARIBO's 16th factory and supports the global company's production of over 160 million Goldbears every day. The facility is a multi-phase project and this first phase includes the production facility, an administrative building and a warehouse. Future phases are in development and will include new technology, capacity and hundreds of new Associates to bring HARIBO's mission of childlike happiness to life. HARIBO's top priority is the safety of its Associates, consumers and partners, so in order to abide by food safety regulations and protect all stakeholders, the brand does not offer factory tours at this time.

"I started my career with HARIBO more than 20 years ago, and I'm so proud to be part of the team that made the dream of a U.S. factory come true," said Hakan Zor , chief production officer, HARIBO of America. "Our Associates worked tirelessly to ensure every step was taken with care, with the best quality equipment, technology and ingredients on the market. The HARIBO brand has limitless potential and producing in the U.S. is an exciting next chapter of our story."

HARIBO chose Pleasant Prairie, Wis. , located in Kenosha County , as its U.S. manufacturing location because of its shared values of quality, trust and independence, coupled with the work ethic of the region and warm welcome from the community. The factory has already brought hundreds of career opportunities to the community, with hundreds more slated as the facility continues to expand over the next several years to diversify production. Aligned with the brand's commitments to community giving, HARIBO works closely with the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha , as well as with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside , Carthage College and Gateway Technical College , to provide scholarship and internship opportunities.

"At HARIBO we think in generations. We are in the U.S. for the long-term and are honored to be part of the Pleasant Prairie community," said Wes Saber , chief financial officer, HARIBO of America. "One of our core values is trust, and it was important for us to give back to the people of Pleasant Prairie who have welcomed us so warmly. We believe everyone deserves access to quality, affordable education so our partnerships reflect that. We're committed to creating learning and career opportunities that will drive economic development and wellness for Southeast Wisconsin ."

NEW PRODUCT LAUNCH

At the same time, the brand continues to bring excitement with innovation. As the classic Goldbears roll off the line in Pleasant Prairie , HARIBO's newest treat, produced in Germany , will join them in stores nationwide just in time for summer: Wild Berry Goldbears.

Wild Berry Goldbears are inspired by consumers' love of fruity flavors. They're the same Goldbears shapes that fans know and love, but with bursts of berry flavors: Blueberry, Wild Cherry, Strawberry, Raspberry and Wildberry.

"HARIBO fans tell us they love our texture and flavor combinations, and Wild Berry Goldbears are a nod to that for a perfect summer treat," said Rick LaBerge , chief commercial officer, HARIBO of America. "HARIBO has been the world's #1 gummi brand for over a century because we stay true to our heritage while also driving to innovate, and that's all inspired by our consumers. Right now as we're starting production in the U.S. we're focused on classic Goldbears, and we're excited to produce more of our gummi varieties including innovative new treats like Wild Berry Goldbears in the future."

HARIBO is proud to celebrate this new facility and to continue producing the world's most iconic, high quality gummi treats that inspire childlike happiness (and countless smiles) every day.

German candy maker Haribo is developing its first North American manufacturing plant. The facility in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, will produce Goldbears gummy bears and other Haribo products.

The plant will be built in a phased manner with an estimated investment of $300m. Plans for the site were announced in March 2017 and its ground-breaking ceremony was held in December 2020, coinciding with Haribo’s 100th anniversary. The grading and site works were carried out a few weeks before the start of construction.

The project will create 385 direct jobs in the first phase of construction and up to 4,200 indirect jobs once fully operational. Production at the facility is expected to begin by 2023.

The property acquisition for the project was finalised last February. The final site and operational plans for phase one were conditionally approved by the Plan Commission in May.

Details about the facility

The project involves the construction of a state-of-the-art production facility, a warehouse, an administrative building, a day care centre, a fitness building, a museum, a retail store, and a gatehouse for truck traffic and utility buildings.

The facility will adopt the latest technology for the optimisation of overall quality and productivity. It will initially produce Goldbears gummy bears and will later manufacture more customer favourites.

The plant will allow Haribo to expand its global manufacturing network while offering faster and more efficient delivery of fan favourite products.

HARIBO of America Expands U.S. Headquarters in Illinois

October 12, 2017

Illinois remains top destination for foreign direct investment

SPRINGFIELD – Governor Bruce Rauner, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and Intersect Illinois, today announced that HARIBO of America Inc. will be growing their U.S. presence in Illinois. The German company will be expanding their U.S. headquarters, currently located in Rosemont, and adding 55 new jobs to their existing workforce.

“It is great to have HARIBO of America expanding their operation and presence within our state,” said Governor Bruce Rauner. “HARIBO of America has been a tremendous partner since they moved their operations to Illinois, not only through their work to create opportunity for Illinoisans, but by helping to promote Illinois on a global scale. I wish them continued success in this expansion.”

“We’re thrilled to be increasing our commitment to the Chicagoland area as our HARIBO of America headquarters – the candy capital of the U.S.,” HARIBO of America Chief Operating Officer Rick LaBerge said.

“HARIBO of America looks forward to continuing our investment in the Chicagoland area and driving economic growth through planned job creation at our Rosemont headquarters,” Chief Financial Officer Wes Saber said.

Illinois ranks first in the Midwest as a destination for foreign investment. Over 1,890 foreign firms call Illinois home and they employ more than 319,000 Illinois residents. German firms alone employ 36,702 Illinoisans at 847 different locations, making Germany Illinois’ third largest FDI partner by employment.

“Foreign direct investment is crucial to our economy, and Illinois has assets that have allowed us to lead the charge in the U.S.,” said Intersect Illinois President and CEO Mark Peterson. “From our strategic location to our world-class workforce, companies across the globe can clearly see why Illinois is a great place to expand into the American market.”

The Rauner administration and Intersect Illinois worked closely with HARIBO of America executives to make this project a reality.

“Growing our economy remains one of the main goals of the Rauner administration,” said DCEO Director Sean McCarthy. “Supporting companies like HARIBO of America and creating an environment that helps them expand and grow is imperative to this effort.”

HARIBO of America currently employs 59 full time employees. The company plans to nearly double their workforce by 2021, bringing their U.S. headquarters employment to 114.

"I started my career with HARIBO more than 20 years ago, and I'm so proud to be part of the team that made the dream of a U.S. factory come true," said Hakan Zor, chief production officer, Haribo's of America. "Our Associates worked tirelessly to ensure every step was taken with care, with the best quality equipment, technology, and ingredients on the market. The HARIBO brand has limitless potential and producing in the U.S. is an exciting next chapter of our story."

Haribo's chose Pleasant Prairie, WI, located in Kenosha County, as its U.S. manufacturing location because of its shared values of quality, trust, and independence, coupled with the work ethic of the region and warm welcome from the community. The factory has already brought hundreds of career opportunities to the community, with hundreds more slated as the facility continues to expand over the next several years to diversify production. Aligned with the brand's commitments to community giving, Haribo works closely with the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, as well as with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, Carthage College, and Gateway Technical College, to provide scholarship and internship opportunities.

"At Haribo we think in generations. We are in the U.S. for the long-term and are honored to be part of the Pleasant Prairie community," said Wes Saber, chief financial officer, Haribo of America. "One of our core values is trust, and it was important for us to give back to the people of Pleasant Prairie who have welcomed us so warmly. We believe everyone deserves access to quality, affordable education so our partnerships reflect that. We're committed to creating learning and career opportunities that will drive economic development and wellness for Southeast Wisconsin."

At the same time, the brand continues to bring excitement with innovation. As the classic Goldbears roll off the line in Pleasant Prairie, Haribo's newest treat, produced in Germany, will join them in stores nationwide just in time for summer: Wild Berry Goldbears.

Wild Berry Goldbears are inspired by consumers' love of fruity flavors. They're the same Goldbears shapes that fans know and love, but with bursts of berry flavors: Blueberry, Wild Cherry, Strawberry, Raspberry, and Wildberry.

"HARIBO fans tell us they love our texture and flavor combinations, and Wild Berry Goldbears are a nod to that for a perfect summer treat," said Rick LaBerge, chief commercial officer, Haribo of America.

Taking a tour of the nation’s only bobby pin factory in Our Town Shelbyville

SHELBYVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — It’s not every day you talk about bobby pins — a clip that many women use for their hair. Fun fact: most of them are made here in Central Illinois.

Long before the handy little clips can even reach your hair, they have to go through quite the process just steps away from the County Courthouse in Our Town Shelbyville. The history stretches back to more than 100 years ago.

The Sta-Rite Ginnie Lou Factory started in 1917 and focused on making celluloid hairpins. From there, the company grew and grew for Noel Bolinger’s family.

Our Town Shelbyville: Looking inside Forest Park, the Chautauqua Auditorium

“Bobby pins came in around the 20s, about 10 years after we opened,” Bolinger explained. “Then in the 30s, they became very popular.”

Shortly after, World War II started and changed the whole factory.

“Wire was rationed. Bobby pins weren’t important at that time,” he said. “All of the U.S. manufacturers converted all kinds of things to the war effort.”

After it ended, operations returned to normal and continued into today.

Our Town Shelbyville

The wire feeds through the machines, paints the bobby pins and they all end in giant tubs. The factory can make up to one million bobby pins a day! Plus, this is the only bobby pin factory left in the United States.

“Walmart, Walgreens, all those big stores all of the bobby pins are imported,” Bolinger said.

But, if you look closely at the back of certain brands, you’ll see a certain small mark from Our Town Shelbyville.

Next time you pick up a bobby pin and put it in your hair, just remember it was probably made right in the heart of Central Illinois.
