Day 3: Amsterdam To Berlin

Location: amsterdam, berlin, accommodation: ibis berlin messe (or similar), accommodation name: ibis berlin messe (or similar), meals included: breakfast, dinner.

Amsterdam, it's been lovely, but today's agenda is onto the autobahn and on the fast-track to uber-cool Berlin. On the world map of party vibes, Berlin has a gold star. We've got two nights to explore every inch of this iconic city, and we'll kick it off with a bit of a tour of the city and its troubled but fascinating past. Once we've gotten acquainted with the key sites, you'll have some free time to discover the city. Berlin has so much to offer the hungry traveler, from the somber icons like the Holocaust memorial to side streets with hidden cafes and shops. And if you're not sure where to start, your Trip Manager can always point you in the right direction.

Day 4: Berlin

Location: berlin.

Tours, glorious tours! After our taster of Berlin's history yesterday, we’ll have two inspiring walking tours in store for today (totally optional of course). First up, take a historical walking tour, including a visit to the site of Hitler's bunker. Next, we’ll embark on an Alternative Berlin walking tour, taking us to all the city’s hipster haunts and historical hotspots. If you're looking for a night out, tonight is the perfect time to scope out one of those underground raves or cocktail-lounge-in-the-basement scenarios that Berlin is famous for.

Day 5: Berlin To Prague

Location: berlin, dresden, prague, accommodation: ibis praha wenceslas square hotel (or similar), accommodation name: ibis praha mala strana hotel (or similar).

This morning we'll motor out of Berlin, ready for our next city. Berlin is one tough act to follow, but luckily we're headed for the darling of Europe: Prague. A drive from Berlin to Prague wouldn't be complete without stopping in Dresden. Sadly destroyed by World War II, the rebuilt town is now a symbol of resilience, soaked in the beauty of an Opera house, the domed Frauenkirche, & the Royal Residence. We'll spot them all on a tour of the best spots before hitting the road again. Arriving in the fairytale city of Prague with medieval spires, curvy cobbled lanes and street carts selling fried cheese, we'll waste no time in getting out and exploring for ourselves. Starting with castles and cathedrals, we'll soak up stories of Bohemian Kings and gothic history. Then, the night is yours to amble around the Old Town Square and find a few haunts to let the hours slip away in.

Day 6: Prague

Location: prague.

With a full day to explore, Prague is yours! By the end of today you'll be an expert on Gothic architecture, artisanal food markets & locally-brewed Czech beer. Tonight, you'll have the chance to join an optional Czech evening with traditional music, dancing & dinner for all the Czech vibes you could hope for.

Day 7: Prague To Munich

Location: prague, dachau, munich, accommodation: holiday inn express munich city west (or similar), accommodation name: holiday inn express munich city west (or similar).

We warned you about falling head over heels for Prague! Sorry team, you cannot live here forever. Unless....? Journeying out of the Czech Republic, we'll start our time in Germany with a sobering visit to the Dachau concentration camp memorial. You'll be able to spend some time here to learn and reflect, before we head on to the city of Munich. It would seem we were born in need of some delightful Bavarian culture, we just didn't know it until now. Munich may be famed for its Oktoberfest festivities, but the spirit of things kicks on year round. A trip to a traditional beer hall will get you very well acquainted with things, just after you've swooned at a Gothic clock complete with 32 dancing figures and 43 chiming bells.

Day 8: Munich

Location: munich.

Today is your chance to dive deep into Munich's cute culture and urban life. After our walking tour, you're free to roam the old town, buy yourself a pair or lederhosen or a traditional dirndl, or visit the busy streets and cafes of the university district.

Day 9: Munich To Venice

Location: munich, tyrol, venice, accommodation: a&o hotel venice mestre (or similar), accommodation name: a&o hotel venice mestre (or similar).

Goodbye Munich, hello mountains. Today we're hitting the road for Italy, but first we're in search of lands so sweet they made The Sound of Music. Take a breath of that fresh alpine air! We're in the Austrian Tyrol, and this part of the world is famous for adventure sports.  And just like that, we're in a new country and a whole new vibe. Ah, Venice! Fresh pasta, lilting accents & romantic architecture - we've arrived in one of Italy's most famous cities. Tonight we'll relax here, knowing we have all day tomorrow to cruise canals & explore picturesque cobbled streets.

Day 10: Venice

Location: venice, accommodation name: lh hotel sirio venice (or similar).

Buongiorno! Venice is ours for a full and glorious Italian day. We'll start exploring The Floating City by jumping aboard our own private motoscafo boat and cruising the canals en route to the historical heart of the city. Next, you have the option to discover hidden Venice with a guided walking tour or a traditional gondola ride, or take a guided cruise out to the UNESCO heritage site of Burano. At this picture-perfect fisherman's island decorated with gorgeous technicolour houses, you'll visit a local family restaurant and indulge in the best seafood feast you've ever experienced.

Day 11: Venice To Rome

Location: venice, rome, accommodation: hotel santa costanza (or similar).

Farewell floating city, but Italy, we're not done with you yet, our next destination the Eternal City of Rome is just around the corner. The evening will really take it up to high key as we uncover Italian icons in the country's capital of Rome. With a city tour on arrival, we'll get a glimpse of Rome's glory by night, ready to be fully unveiled tomorrow. Gelato, pizza and ancient monuments, we're here for it all.

Day 12: Rome

Location: rome, vatican, rome, accommodation name: bb roma tuscolana (or similar).

This morning we're up and out early to make the most of our chance to explore this ancient city. Starting with a visit to the world's smallest country, Vatican City. Here in Vatican City, you'll be able to take an optional guided tour of the Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel. Religious or not, the Vatican's Italian Renaissance church will send shivers down your spine. Back in Rome, we'll have time to hit the streets and discover the incredible ancient civilization on our doorstep. You can opt to take a tour of the famous Colosseum and walk in the footsteps of Emperors and Gladiators in a guided tour, or snap epic selfies against a background of pink azaleas by the entrance. Visit the Trevi Fountain and throw coins to make a wish, sip espresso in a cobbled backstreet and soak up Italian life as it dances by.

Day 13: Rome To Florence

Location: rome, chianti, florence, accommodation: bb giustizia (or similar), accommodation name: bb giustizia (or similar).

With antipasto, good vino and golden countryside ahead, saying goodbye to Rome doesn't feel so bad. Cast your eyes over the city one last time this morning before we hit the road, bound for Tuscany.  We’ll stop off to visit a gorgeous 16th Century villa that’s now a working winery. We’ll check out the old cellar, and even sample some Chianti wine for ourselves – with antipasti too of course (rude not to, right?)  Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is more proof that Italy has so many great places packed into one small region. Here we'll drift along the River Arno, get into the Tuscan vibes with another drop of Chianti wine, and take in the beauty of the city and its magnificent Duomo Cathedral. Take it all in - we have all day tomorrow to let the explorations continue.

Day 14: Florence

Location: florence, accommodation: a conveniently located hotel.

Ready for a full day of all things Florence? Today is the perfect balance of guided local wisdom and free time to roam. We'll uncover the beautiful art of traditional leatherwork, explore streets bursting with heritage, and see all the top sights on a walking tour. This afternoon you'll have free time to take to the local markets and taste the local gelato before a special optional evening out tonight, a visit to a 14th century Certosan monastry, followed by dinner and wine at a magical Tuscan restaurant nestled in the countryside nearby.

Day 15: Florence To Lucerne

Location: florence, pisa, lucerne, accommodation: ibis budget luzern city (or similar), accommodation name: ibis budget luzern city (or similar).

It's almost time to say a heartfelt 'ciao' to Italy, and hello to the land of creamy chocolate, cheese and watches. But we have one more thing to do in Italy first.... As if we were going to jump from Florence to Switzerland without a sneaky side trip to the Leaning Tower of Pisa! Here's your chance to perfect the holding-up-the-tower shot, so make it a good one. With magical views unfolding outside our windows we'll find ourselves in Switzerland, pulling up in the fairytale town of Lucerne, famous for its wooden bridges, cobbled lanes and beautiful setting against the lake it's named after. Here we'll visit the wooden chapel bridge and lion monument and take the chance to explore. Our recommendation for tonight? Swiss chocolate.

Day 16: Lucerne

Location: lucerne.

Today you're free to stroll the beautiful streets of Lucerne, sit in a coffee shop soaking up mountain life, or consume your body weight in chocolate. But if you're looking for something a little more adventurous, you can opt for a visit the top of Mt. Pilatus for breathtaking views over the Swiss Alps, sign up for a traditional Swiss fondue lunch, or take an optional cruise across Lake Lucerne for a look at the epic Swiss Alps reflected off the water. Don't say we don't spoil you.

Day 17: Lucerne To Paris

Location: lucerne, paris, accommodation: ibis paris porte d'orleans hotel (or similar), accommodation name: ibis paris porte d'orleans hotel (or similar).

It's been sweet, but our time in Lucerne is up this morning. We're Paris-bound! Out with the altitude, in with the inner-city Parisian bliss. We'll jump back onto our coach to cross the border out of Switzerland and (back) into France. After coasting through the pretty wine producing region of Burgundy, we'll arrive in the City of Lights. Lamp-lit bridges, a sparkling Eiffel Tower, & evening coffee haunts, this evening we'll fall in love with everything Paris on a dreamy night-time tour. Is it just us, or is love in the air? Once we've seen the most famous landmarks, we'll celebrate our first night in the city by heading up the Montparnasse Tower for the best panoramic views of the city.

Day 18: Paris

Location: paris.

Today's the day to stroll the beautiful streets of Paris - and we'll start with a visit to an authentic French perfumery to learn all the secrets of the trade. Then there's plenty of time to lust over designer haute couture or French vintage stores, admire the Notre Dame Cathedral, order coffee and crepes, or get artsy at the many museums of the Louvre. Just don't wear yourself out, because tonight's your chance to get involved with VIP seats, dinner & French champagne at an iconic Parisian cabaret show. With your last night looming, this is the perfect way to make it one to remember. Get ready to go out with a bang!

Day 19: Paris To London

Location: paris, calais, dover, london.

Rise, shine, and soak up your last dose of Paris this morning over a coffee and croissant together, as we marvel at how much we've seen on this magical journey. It may be over for now, but these friendships and memories will last a lifetime. Our last coach ride together will be a complimentary transfer to CDG airport this morning, or you can stay onboard for the full ride back to London. Plenty of time to start planning the next reunion... What an adventure! Say a fond farewell to the group as you wrap up the trip on arrival in London.

A trip to a traditional beer hall will get you very well acquainted with things, just after you've swooned at a Gothic clock complete with 32 dancing figures and 43 chiming bells.

Today is your chance to dive deep into Munich's cute culture and urban life. After our walking tour, you're free to roam the old town, buy yourself a pair or lederhosen or a traditional dirndl, or visit the busy streets and cafes of the university district.

Munich to Venice

Goodbye Munich, hello mountains. Today we're hitting the road for Italy, but first we're in search of lands so sweet they made The Sound of Music. Drive through Austria without getting out to say hello? Never! We'll pull into Innsbruck for lunch, a laid-back student city made famous by a medieval old town, an old Olympic Ski Jump & a Royal Palace.

Venice to Rome

Farewell floating city, but Italy, we're not done with you yet, our next destination the Eternal City of Rome is just around the corner. The evening will really take it up to high key as we uncover Italian icons in the country's capital of Rome. With a city tour on arrival, we'll get a glimpse of Rome's glory by night, ready to be fully unveiled tomorrow. Gelato, pizza and ancient monuments, we're here for it all.

This morning we're up and out early to make the most of our chance to explore this ancient city. Hit the streets and discover the incredible ancient civilisation on your doorstep.

Rome to Florence

Ready for a full day of all things Florence? Today is the perfect balance of guided local wisdom and free time to roam. We'll uncover the beautiful art of traditional leatherwork, explore streets bursting with heritage, and see all the top sights on a walking tour. This afternoon you'll have free time to take to the local markets and taste the local gelato before a special optional evening out tonight, dinner and wine at a magical Tuscan restaurant nestled in the countryside nearby.

Florence to Lucerne

Lucerne to Paris

Paris to London

Rise, shine, and soak up your last dose of Paris this morning over a coffee and croissant together, as we marvel at how much we've seen on this magical journey. It may be over for now, but these friendships and memories will last a lifetime. Our last coach ride together will be a complimentary transfer to CDG airport this morning, or you can stay onboard for the full ride back to London. Plenty of time to start planning the next reunion... What an adventure! Say a fond farewell to the group as you wrap up the trip on arrival in London.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

I went off the beaten track in Greece and found something I never expected

author image

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

As we finally reached the viewpoint of the Vikos Gorge, it was time for a much-deserved rest and ice cream.

With a twinkle in his eye, our guide, Alex, declared: ‘When the West was discovering desserts, we in Greece were already diabetic.’

For many Brits , Greece has become the most popular way of accessing the Mediterranean pill: the slow, food-centred, sun basked lifestyle that feels like a necessary escape from the greyness of our home.

Island tourism has become such an important part of the Greek economy , with Santorini and Mykonos attracting a combined four million tourists every year. You’d be forgiven for thinking another Greece even exists.

Which is why a trip to Zagori, in the north west of the country, appealed to me so much. I needed to see another Greece. Something to challenge the island-hoping, party-focused isles that social media had shown me.

Four hours drive from Thessaloniki airport into the heart of the Greek mountains, that actually make up the vast majority of the country, we began to leave the commercialised Greece behind.

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

Snow-capped mountaintops and miles upon miles of uninhabited forest wrapped all around the road. We passed into the mountainous region of Zagori (which translates in Slavic to ‘the place beyond the mountains’) before arriving in the tranquil village of Aristi.

At Aristi Mountain Resort , our home for the next four days, the residencies are beautifully built in traditional Zagori stone from the mountain itself, with the inside a cosy Alpine chalet.

Cliffs that reach up into the sky surround the resort, and in the early morning waves of cloud cover the village beneath.

When we arrived, my friend and I walked out onto our balcony and gazed at the view in stunned silence. ‘I don’t remember ever experiencing quietness like this before’, my friend said.

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

That is what you have to savour and appreciate about this Greece. it’s several mountain ranges away from a Santorini beach party, but also detached from the grand temples of Athens. Zagori lives within and guards its own history, one of mountain-dwellers and serenity.

Over 2,500 years ago Zagori was part of the ancient kingdom of Molossoi (with ruins from this period found dotted around the region – particularly close to the village of Vitsa), but there is archaeological evidence of inhabitants living there from as far back as the Ice Age.

There is a network of stone-arched bridges and staircases in every settlement, with modern accommodations built in a similar style, seemingly carved into the mountains. Staying here brings with it a sense of history – and adventure.

What to do in Zagori

There’s exhilarating rafting along the Voidomatis river which we booked with the local company Trekking Hellas for €40 per person. Expect the magnificent natural beauty of white cliffs and drooping trees guiding your way along the river bank.

You can (and absolutely should) hike along the Vikos Gorge. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or a casual stroller, there’s something for everyone here, but all routes come with phenomenal views.

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

We hiked from the village of Papingo, down to the Voidomatis Springs and back up the gorge to Vikos village which is a short hike (three hours) and moderately challenging. Everything is quite clearly marked but if you want a guide, Trekking Hellas provide them for a variety of prices .

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

Our guide Alex told us the Vikos Gorge it is known as the ‘Grand Canyon of Europe’ and it’s easy to see why. When something you’re gazing at stretches so high above you that you can’t even compute its height, ‘grand’ becomes an appropriate description.

At many points Vikos reaches 1,350m in depth, just a couple hundred metres short of the Grand Canyon’s deepest point, but instead of Arizona’s dust and rock you get the rich greenery of central Europe, with monasteries built by the waterfront among streams of glistening blue.

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

The villages dotted around the region are all worth visiting, each with their own unique character – though all built with the same distinctive white stone.

Quaint cafes serve cakes which will redefine your understanding of sweetness (try the ‘goat cheese cheesecake at Astraka snack bar in Papingo) and cobbled streets wind their way up every hilltop.

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

Back at the hotel, Aristi Mountain Resort offers it’s own form of R&R. The spa includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi, a steam room and a massage room offering a selection of treatments from talented massage therapists.

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

What to eat in Zagori

No stay in Zagori would be complete without experiencing the culinary excellence of the region’s traditional food, and Salvia restaurant (Aristi’s main gourmet dining location) offers an outstanding variety of Greek dishes.

Some of them you might have heard of (such as the deliciously rich and comforting Giouvetsi – a veal and orzo stew) and others you would not have, including the creamy Trahanas and the Soutzoukakia – a meaty dish in an extraordinarily flavourful tomato and cumin sauce.

A real delightful visit – available to all hotel guests – was visiting the local farm where many of the ingredients used at Salvia’s are grown.

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

One of the real food highlights however is the ‘Mushroom restaurant’, Kanela & Garyfallo in the picturesque village of Vitsa. The restaurant includes (alongside a more traditional menu) a full page of dishes made from locally grown mushrooms – and yes, that includes dessert too.

The head chef, Vassilis Katsoupas, is a charismatic man who was bursting with pride explaining to us how each dish uses a different mushroom, and how the mix of different spices helps to bring out each mushroom’s unique tastes.

I can thoroughly recommend tucking into the brilliant mushroom omelette and the chestnut soup which were both bursting with earthy flavours, and fight whatever prejudices you might hold to try the caramelised chanterelles dessert – there’s nothing earthy about this, and you will find yourself craving it for days afterwards.

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

There are few places I’ve visited as unique and calming as Zagori, and Aristi is the perfect location to base yourself when exploring this beautiful region.

The hotel and the village itself have harnessed the stunning majesty and silence of the gorge, creating a destination that gives you everything a holiday is meant to have: calm, adventure and exceptional food.

It’s not the Greece of mythology (there are no pillars or temples in sight), and it’s not a party location (as night hits, looking over the village you won’t hear a pin drop). But it’s Zagori: the quiet, magical realm beyond the mountains.

As we sat with our ice cream, admiring the beautiful sight of the Vikos Gorge that we had just climbed, we discussed with Alex the history of the Zagori, which he told us remained culturally unaltered, despite many different people who had passed through it.

Aristi / Zagori - Jeremy Ullmann

As Alex, who regularly races along the four-hour trail we had just trekked picked up his bag ready to leave, he stopped for a moment to gaze at the canyon below.

He turned back towards us with that twinkle in his eye which we had already grown so accustomed to.

Adventuring in New Zealand’s North Island

By George Strang

Architectural Graduate by day, Adventurer by weekend. When not outdoors in his natural habitat you’ll find this Kiwi hiding under a rock saving for his next overseas adventure.

Published on Jun 20, 2024 | 10 min

Table of Contents

When should i go, how do i get around, where should i go, from the top, down to the bottom, a note on adventuring.

Ah, New Zealand – the land that truly has it all. Adorned with everything from tranquil old growth forests through to arid plains and snowy mountains. You can watch brilliant vermillion sunsets on beaches without seeing another living soul. You can spend one night amongst lush, green rolling hills and the next in the shadow of a snowy giant (mountain). Aotearoa is a veritable playground for adventurers and intrepid travellers such as yourselves, and while Queenstown and the South Island are our most popular tourist destinations, you’d be silly to turn your nose up at what the North Island has to offer.

Real New Zealand

Come anytime! It depends entirely on what you plan to do and see. If you love skiing and snowboarding, the winter season runs from about June-September. The Central Plateau is the only northern region you’ll get your snow sport fix, as other parts of the north island don’t tend to get THAT cold.

October-May is your prime window of opportunity for everything else. It’s generally warm enough to swim, run, bike, and hike to your heart’s content. December-February are the hottest months, so buy SPF 50 sunscreen by the bucket and don’t be afraid to use it, ours is nothing like that gentle European sunshine.

Why, with Contiki of course! The Real New Zealand trip will give you a taste of both the North and South Islands, all from the convenience of a coach filled with like-minded adventurers such as yourself!

If you prefer doing your own thing, and plan to do some serious adventuring, hiring a car is the way to go. You can rent anything from a Suzuki Swift to a self-contained van, giving you the agency to go where no traveler has gone before (no promises though, New Zealand is a small place).

Feeling energetic? You can actually cycle the entire length of New Zealand on what’s called the Tour Aotearoa trail. This adventure mode is called bikepacking and it offers you the country at a pace you can really take it all in. Walking is also an option, on what’s called the Te Araroa. Bear in mind that walking or cycling the length of the North Island will take a decent chunk of time. Multi-day hikes are another excellent option, including the New Zealand Great Walks, of which the North Island is home to three.

Discover the Real New Zealand with our new off-the grid trip

Ask yourself what you want to get out of this trip. Are you coming here to conquer mountain peaks, become an adrenaline junkie, or simply go camping and connect with your friends? New Zealand’s North Island is filled to the brim with natural beauty regardless, but what you want to do should heavily inform where you go.

1. Northland

You’ll likely touch down at Auckland International Airport, so why not hop in a car and head north! Within hours of touching down you could be washing away the jet-lag on an out-of-this-world beautiful beach, or looking for kiwi’s under the clearest starry sky you have ever seen. Due to the low light pollution of sparsely populated areas, this is a perfect area for some stargazing .

Mangawhai, Waipu, and Uretiti beach are all less than a 2 hour drive from Auckland, and make for an idyllic camping trip. Further north lies the Bay of Islands, where you can hire Kayaks, get your tan on, and potentially spot some orcas! Right up the top is a place called Ninety Mile beach (FYI – not actually 90 miles long), which you can drive on, just don’t dent the rental car!

Dry land not doing it for you? Northland is home to some of the most abundant sea life in the country, so why not try your hand at some diving or snorkeling? A guided tour is your best bet to access those hidden gems. A wildlife cruise would also give you a great opportunity to see some dolphins and penguins!

10 Unforgettable New Zealand adventures you need to experience on your next trip

2. auckland.

All the decent adventuring to be had in Auckland exists outside the central city. Take a day trip to Rangitoto, Waiheke, and even Great Barrier Island! This should give you a real taste of what the North Island has to offer. Alternatively head west to Piha and Muriwai for the rugged west coast wilderness. In Piha be sure to take on the achievable Mercer Bay loop walk and Kitekite falls. Muriwai is home to a very long, very beautiful beach. It is home to a gannet colony to the south (mind the smell), and horse trekking to the north! If you don’t ride a horse on the beach in New Zealand at least, what are you really doing here?

PSA – The west coast is beautiful, and the waters may look inviting, but please be prepared. The currents are particularly strong and unforgiving, So much so that we even had a show called Piha Rescue about the lifeguards who have to save countless unsuspecting swimmers in the area. Know your limits and don’t get swept out to sea (that’s where the big sharks live too).

Hamilton is the big city around these parts, but don’t you worry about that. To the east lies the Hauraki Rail Trail, a cycling journey that will take you through some of our beautiful countryside and historic townships. Kaiaua to Matamata will take you 3-5 days. Want to get your bearings? Head for the hills. Te Aroha, Mt. Pirongia, and Maungatautari are all excellent day hikes. Maungatautari has the added advantage of being an eco-sanctuary, and is home to kiwis, amongst other endangered flora and fauna. If you aren’t lucky enough to see any kiwis here, fear not! Contiki will take you to the National Hatchery on your way through the country!

Two words. Glowworm Caves! South of Hamilton lies Waitomo, home to some truly out of this world experiences. A tour will take you on a pitch black boat journey underneath thousands of the emissive little fellas, complete with reflections bouncing playfully off the water. You can pretend you’re in Avatar – it’s more fun that way. There is also a blackwater rafting option, where you sit on an inflatable tube and rocket through caves in pitch black darkness. Sign me up!

A beginner’s guide to hiking and camping in New Zealand

5. bay of plenty.

Arguably the best beaches in the country lie waiting in the sunny Bay of Plenty. Come and learn to surf like you always said you would. Explore the Kaimai Mountain Range, go camping, fishing, boating, whatever you like. Similarly to Northland, you can also experience an abundance of sea life through snorkeling, diving, and dolphin safari adventures.

Rotovegas as it is affectionately known, is a must for you adrenaline junkies. Mountain bike through giant Redwoods, luge down the side of a mountain, or visit the home of Zorbing. Rolling down a hillside in a giant plastic ball is a once in a lifetime opportunity! Afterwards, rest those aching muscles in one of Rotorua’s famous geothermal hot pools.

On Contiki you will have the privilege to engage with traditional Māori culture. Experience a traditional welcome, called a Pōwhiri, before delving into local history at the Ōhinemutu Village. Learning about the rich indigenous culture of Aotearoa will undoubtedly set your travel experiences apart, giving you a deeper appreciation for what makes this little country so great.

Ready for more? Rotorua is here to provide. Ziplining, white water rafting, and hiking are all at your fingertips. So get stuck in!

1. East Coast

The East Coast is somewhat less frequented by tourists, but well worth the adventure. Deep in Te Urewera sits Lake Waikaremoana, a hidden gem by all means. You can take a boat out on the lake, or do the 3-4 day Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk! Further south is Hawkes Bay, home of Art Deco architecture and copious amounts of wine. If you’d like to work off some of that wine, there is an annual run through the vineyards, or climb Te Mata Peak! Going up it drunk is either a really good, or really bad idea. I’ll leave that up to you.

2. Central Plateau

If you thought Rotorua was fun, wait until you hit Taupō! The drive between the two is full of forests, streams, secret spas and geothermal swimming holes, so be sure to venture off the beaten track a little. On your way into town you will find Huka Falls. The electric blue waters vary greatly between torrential rapids and lazy river, depending on the rain. Professionals kayak down it, but it’s not for your average adventurer (like you).

Why not go for a jet boat ride instead! It will take you right up to the base of the falls and hurtle you down narrow canyons close enough to touch. Taupō itself is also home to a prawn farm, motorsport park, skydiving, and bungee jumping. Fun fact, Lake Taupō is said to be bigger than the entirety of Singapore! It is also the crater of one of the largest volcanic eruptions the earth has seen in the last 5000 years.

Further south lies the Desert Road, and with it the very beautiful and very active Mount Ruapehu (its a volcano). Home to skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer, you would be remiss to skip this part of the country. A stone’s throw to the west is our next destination, Blue Duck Station!

Sandwiched between Ruapehu and Whanganui National Park and on the banks of a river, Blue Duck Station truly has it all. Explore the local bush, learn about history and conservation in the area, go on a horse trek, kayak the Whanganui River, and gaze at those beautiful stars. Nearby is the Bridge to Nowhere, a majestic wooden bridge perched 40 meters above the river. This is one of those experiences you’ll take home and tell people it ‘changed you’. Not sure how to get there? Contiki will take you on the Real New Zealand trip!

13 best things to do in Queenstown, New Zealand

1. West Coast

Between Taumarunui and Stratford is what’s known as the Forgotten Highway. It is a 155 km journey through largely unspoilt sub-tropical rainforest, taking you back to a time before human interference (minus the road and tunnel parts). On the way through you’ll find a place called Whangamōmona, which came to prominence in 1989 when the residents decided to cede from New Zealand and form a ‘republic’, and even went so far as electing a president. Once in the Taranaki Region, why not climb the majestic Mount Taranaki or explore the many hiking trails that circle its base?

If a road trip doesn’t tickle your fancy, why not go for the Whanganui River Journey? It consists of a 5 day canoe ride down the river from Taumarunui, and takes you down past the Bridge to Nowhere and into a place called Pipiriki. Despite not being a walk, it is part of the New Zealand Great Walks list and is well worth the effort.

2. Wellington Region

I know what you’re thinking. Wellington? I came here for adventure, not some city slicker BS. Well, you’d be surprised what the region has to offer. North of the city sits the Tararua Forest Park, packed full of multi-day hikes to fill your cup. Head east and you’ll find more wine country, cycling trails, and tranquil countryside. Keep going to the coast and stop in at Castlepoint for some views of the endless Pacific Ocean, a lovely lighthouse, and keep an eye out for the local surfers.

The city itself has a few aces up its sleeve. Between the suburbs of Kelburn and Karori is the Zealandia Eco-Sanctuary, another amazing opportunity to interact with our endangered flora and fauna. Further west is Mākara, full of mountain biking goodness. You can also hike trails that take you to the south coast and Red Rocks, where you can find seals in their natural habitat!

You now know where to go and what to do when it comes to the basics of adventuring in the North Island. Keeping this in mind, some of the best adventure experiences can be unplanned. So take the scenic route, go to that secluded beach, follow through with that skydive. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose, so don’t go home with any regrets!

Stop dreaming and make sh*t happen!
