Universities in the West Midlands

The West Midlands is full of things to do on a modest student budget. In addition to the student bars, pubs and clubs that you’d expect, there is a unique selection of attractions and activities that can only be found in the region. 

Gaze upon the landscape which inspired J.R.R Tolkien to write The Lord of the Rings. Explore the museums documenting the birth of the industrial revolution. Wander the red brick streets of Birmingham or Wolverhampton and retrace the steps of enterprise and progress. 

The sport of rugby was invented in a town of the same name, and the region is known for producing many top-flight football teams such as Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion. There are plenty of opportunities to go and see a local fixture, with student concession tickets available. 

Or you can simply grab a bite to eat from one of the many international cuisines represented in this contemporary and cosmopolitan region. There are plenty of street markets and high-end shopping districts which can be readily browsed on a student budget.

Nightlife in the West Midlands 

The West Midlands has several large population centres, including Birmingham, Coventry, Stoke-on-Trent, and Wolverhampton, which each offer a fantastic night out and fab entertainment options. 

Eating out is inexpensive, with a basic meal costing between £10 to £12.50 on average and the price of a pint of beer averaging less than £4.25 across the whole region, and as little as £2.75 in Wolverhampton! There are many student-friendly pubs, clubs and bars, and you will often find weekday student nights with discounted entry fees. Big cities like Birmingham and Coventry have a really good selection of events, including jazz sessions, disco parties and more.  

There are a huge range of pubs and sports bars running special events like pub quizzes and themed parties, and a lot of information about the local nightlife can be found through your university’s students’ union, so be sure to swing by at the start of the night and see what’s on. 

Whatever your preference, you’ll be able to find it here, and an added bonus is that taxi prices are cheaper than in most other UK regions, so you’ll be able to get home safely at the end of the night. 

Across the West Midlands, most institutions offer student accommodation in university-owned halls of residence buildings, which are typically very close to campus and have loads of additional advantages such as inclusive insurance, internet, utilities bills and building security. Another factor is the undeniable social aspect of living among hundreds of your peers, making it very easy to meet people. 

Rooms are typically organised within a shared self-catered apartment of 3-8 students, mainly with communal bathroom facilities or an ensuite, and sometimes with entire studio apartments available. Average prices are between £120 and £190 a week for a contract which lasts the duration of your first-year studies. Some universities such as the University of Birmingham and Coventry University offer catered accommodation options, which are a little more expensive but have the significant advantage of saving you time by not needing to buy ingredients, cook and clean up after your meals. 

Private rental prices in the West Midlands are fairly consistent between locations, and a city centre studio apartment in either Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Coventry, Warwick, Stoke-on-Trent or Worcester costs between £670 to £820 per month. Sharing an apartment with friends is a good way to lower this cost, and a three-bedroom flat in the city centre ranges between £1,000 to £1,800 per month.  

Student costs in the West Midlands 

Additional student expenses include transport, groceries, extra-curricular supplies, and entertainment. 

Travel is a consideration, especially if you end up living a little further out from campus. Public transport is quite reasonably priced across the region, with a one-way bus journey usually costing between £2.20 to £2.50 per ticket. Similarly, wherever you choose to study, a monthly bus or rail pass starts at around £50 which is comfortably less than £2 per day for unlimited use. 

West Midlands grocery rates are generally more affordable than in the south of England, especially in London. The most inexpensive average prices are found in Stoke-on-Trent, although most cities have easily accessible low-cost outlets such as Costcutter, Aldi or Lidl where you can reliably spend less on good quality food. Many towns run weekly markets where you can pick up fresh produce at bargain prices – especially towards the end of the day. 

It’s a good idea to keep a small cash reserve in case of emergency printing or photocopying situations. It doesn’t need to be very much money, but it might save you a lot of fuss down the line.

To buy a Student Bus Pass you'll need two passport photos (electronic if you're applying online) and proof of being in full time education (over 12 hours per week).

Having reopened on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at Digbeth Arena,  DDC  brings together some of the best street food in the West Midlands (we recommend going on the last Friday of the month for their biggest line-ups). 2. Shop safely at Birmingham Bullring & Grand Central

Everyone treats themselves to a little retail therapy on Student Loan day, right? This year will be no different, and as home to some of the most popular brand names, the  Bullring  is one of the best shopping experiences in the region. Fancy lunch while you're at it? Wander through the Bullring Link and you'll find Grand Central - one of Birmingham's newest food hubs, with restaurants serving up everything from Mexican favourites to Vietnamese comfort food. 3. Break out of an Escape Room with your friends

Escape rooms like  Escape Live  near Livery Street (underneath the Arches in the Jewellery Quarter) have become a great option for an alternative day out. They offer a fun and unique experience as you attempt to escape by solving a series of puzzles within a time limit. 4. Party the night away on Broad Street

5. Relax in one of Birmingham’s beautiful parks

9. Enjoy a Moseley night out

Casual haunts and student favourites like the  Prince of Wales ,  The Fighting Cocks  and  The Cuban Embassy  make for a fun and unique night out away from the usual strip. Did you know the Balti curry was actually created in Birmingham? And for the best in the city, we recommend visiting the  Balti Triangle . 13. Cruise the canals by boat

A favourite bit of Brummie trivia is that we have more miles of canals than Venice, so if you want a truly unique way to explore the city, book yourself on a canal tour. Journeys last between 30-60 mins and offer views and insights into the canal system you won’t get any other way. The  Dudley  tour is particularly special, offering 420 million years of history in just 45 minutes!

14. Watch a movie in style at the Everyman Cinema

A hidden gem at  The Mailbox ,  Everyman  is the perfect way to treat someone who loves film. Enjoy a great movie on plush sofa seating with the ability to order food and drinks and have them brought to you! We would definitely recommend the ice cream sundaes! Remember to book in advance though as there will now be restricted seating compared to before.

15. Release your wild side at Dudley Zoo

We have a real soft spot for  Dudley Zoo . With more than 1300 species to see, as well as an opportunity to see the ruins of Dudley Castle, this local gem makes for a very unique experience. See all your favourites from the animal kingdom, from tigers to chimpanzees, all while in the shadow of an ancient castle. It’s an easy journey too, just 4 minutes walk from  Dudley bus station . Make sure to pre book your tickets online now it has reopened, as you won’t be able to pay on the day or over the phone.

16. Discover local history at the Black Country Museum

Go back in time with the  Black Country Living Museum  and explore 26 acres, covering over 200 years of history, and see the evolution of the Black Country before your eyes. Make sure you pre book an entry time as you are no longer allowed to pay on entry. 

17. Take in the peace and quiet of The New Art Gallery, Walsall

Based in Walsall’s town centre and just a few minutes from the bus station, you can enjoy a number of internationally recognised pieces, regular workshops and interesting talks to inform your studies or just spend a nice, quiet day. Plus the best part -  museum  admission is free! However, the gallery is now operating a revised opening schedule from Wednesday to Saturday 11am-4pm and on Sundays 12pm-4pm.

18. Enjoy a tiki cocktail or 2 at Samoan Joes

Head on a cocktail journey around the Oceania islands at Samoan Joes Tiki Bar in Coventry. Specialising in zombie cocktails you can share a rum punch with a friend in their secret tiki garden. Just remember to pre book your table beforehand for a maximum of 6 people to avoid disappointment.

FAQ's - Student bus pass

Direct debit payments.

What is the next step once I have applied?

You will be given the opportunity to pay for your first ticket by credit / debit card so you benefit from our services within 5 days of receiving your application.

Your direct debit application will take approximately 10-15 days to process. You will receive a welcome letter confirming your details and payments timescales. Your next ticket will arrive 5 working days before the expiry of the first ticket and payment will be collected from the bank account details supplied.

Is my application accepted automatically?

A Credit Reference Agency will be asked to confirm the name, address and credit status of the person paying the Direct Debit.

When will the money be taken from my account?

The first direct debit payment from your account will be taken on the initial start day of your ticket, for instance if you selected a start date of 1st August 2013 (you will pay for this ticket by credit / debit card) your direct debit will be collected on 1st September 2013 for the subsequent ticket. This calendar date will then be the date your debit payment is made for every month that you are a member of the scheme. If this falls on a bank holiday, your payment will be taken the next working day.

Can West Midlands Travel Ltd change the amount they take out of my account?

We will only collect the authorised amount. If the amount changes, we will notify you in writing at least 10 working days in advance.

What if my ticket does not arrive in time?

If your ticket has not arrived 5 days before your current ticket expires, please contact the Direct Debit Team on 0121 254 6322 or email us at [email protected]. WMT Ltd will not refund travel tickets that have been purchased as a result of tickets not arriving due to a delay in the postal service.

I already have a photocard do I still need to send in a photograph with my application?

Yes. All photographs are scanned into our system, so that if you ever lose your ID card we can send out a replacement, subject to an administration fee. You will need to either upload or send a passport sized photograph with every new application.

Can I change my ticket subscription?

Yes. One month's notice is required to make any changes to your ticket

What if I lose my ticket or it is stolen?

You can contact the Direct Debit team on 0121 254 6322 and order a replacement ticket and / or photocard. A replacement fee of £6 for each section will be required for payment by credit / debit card.

Refunds will not be given for any additional tickets purchased.

What if I forget my ticket?

It is your responsibility to have a valid ticket with you for any journey you make. Unfortunately refunds will not be given for any tickets purchased under these circumstances.

Can I cancel my Direct Debit?

Yes. You must give at least one month's notice. You will be able to email us at [email protected]

Buying your bus pass online 

How do I pay?

Payment can be made using most major credit and debit cards, including Visa, Electron, Visa Debit, Mastercard, and Maestro. Unfortunately we do not accept American Express.

Payment will be processed by our payment service provider Sage who operate a secure online payment service. You may be asked for your 3D secure details if your card issuer has already asked you to assign them.

How long will it take to buy the ticket?

Buying a ticket online is simple, once you have registered your account details, all subsequent purchases are straight forward taking no more than a few minutes to complete. If you are a student we require course details. Have your credit / debit card ready and a passport style photograph to upload. You can elect to send it to us by post. Please note that this may delay the fulfilment of your order.

How do I search for my ticket?

If you are unsure which product is the right one for you, use our filters to refine the list. 'REGIONAL' cards are for all our Midlands services, or if you don't need to travel throughout the region you can choose more localised products by selecting the filter required.

Once you have selected your age group and region, you will be presented with a list of the tickets available in your chosen location. Check the INFO box to view details of the tickets area of validity and any restrictions that may apply.

How much will the ticket cost?

Please see 'All Tickets & Prices' section on the website to find a full list of products and prices we offer and the best way to buy them.

What information will I need to provide?

You will be asked for the following information and it is important that this is provided in full.

• Full Address
• Telephone Number
• Email Address
• Credit / Debit Card Information
• Date of birth (for security reasons)
• Colour Passport sized photograph that can be uploaded or posted to us for production of your photocard.
• Students will be asked a few simple questions about their school/college or university and course details.

How do I know my payment has been successful?

You will be presented with a confirmation once your payment has successfully processed. You can print a copy of this for your records. Also, please check your email address you supplied at time of registration for your payment confirmation email. Once you have received this then your transaction was successful.

Is the information I supply secure?

Yes - National Express West Midlands adopt strict controls over security of all its websites. Our sites are regularly checked by security experts to ensure that they are updated for all aspects of internet security.

How do I get my photoID?

We will supply you with a photocard, free of charge. To make this process simple we have the facility for you to upload your jpg image at the time of purchase. If you cannot do this you have the option of sending the photograph to us. We will capture your photograph on your ID card. This photocard will then become your membership card so you can enjoy buying online tickets without worrying about photocards again.

Young Persons who hold a (n) 16-18 photocard issued by Transport for West Midlands need only supply their photoID card number (conditions apply) during the buying process.

How will I receive my ticket?

We will post your ticket to the address provided using Royal Mail, first class post - from time to time we may send post first class recorded signed for delivery.

I have purchased a ticket and my details have changed, what should I do?

Log in to My Account and here you can update your details. For security reasons for some changes you will need to contact us at [email protected]. We are introducing new features to the My Account facility soon - please check from time to time.

• Spread the cost with Direct Debit

Multi Day Tickets

A SWIFT card loaded with 5, 10 or 15 day tickets for all day travel on bus services.

• Great for flexible or part time workers
• Cheaper than buying a ticket on the day
• Buy online or at your local Travel Centre
• No photo, share with friends or family when not using it

Swift Go is here to cut out the confusion. This product takes away the need to understand which ticket to buy for your journey. A product, designed for those who don’t travel the traditional, Monday – Friday commute.

Once you’ve set up an account, choose how you want to pay, and use your Swift card each time you travel on the bus or tram. At the end of each day, we’ll calculate the cost, based on the number of journeys you’ve made and cap the price.

This could work out cheaper and more convenient than buying single or day tickets each time you need to travel.

How do I use the West Midlands Railway discount code?

Once you’ve added what you want to your bag and headed to online checkout, simply enter your discount code. What if I have lost or damaged my free travel pass?

As your pass was issued by TfWM please contact Network West Midlands to arrange for a replacement to be sent to you.

Replacement passes can be ordered and paid for over the phone, or at the TfWM Travel Centre located in New Street train station. All replacement passes will be posted first class and should be received within 5 working days. 

Holders of passes issued by other local authorities will need to contact their own issuing authority.

How do I apply for a free travel pass?

For people living within the West Midlands county, which covers Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Solihull, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton, your pass will be issued by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM). You can download an application from the Network West Midlands website. 

If you live outside of the West Midlands county, your older person's travel pass will be issued by the authority who administers your local concessionary travel scheme.

Am I eligible for an Older person's travel pass?

You are eligible for an Older person's travel pass if:

• Have reached state pension age
• Live in the West Midlands

Am I eligible for a Disabled person's travel pass?

You may be eligible for a Disabled persons travel pass if:

• You have an eligible disability that's expected to last at least 12 months
• You are aged 5 or over

How do I use the free travel pass?

It's simple to use your free pass: 

• Remove the pass from your purse or wallet. Your pass will not work when next to a bank card, you'll also want to make sure you don't place any contactless bank cards near the reader to prevent any accidental payments being made taken .
• Place the pass flat onto the reader. You'll only need to do this once when you board the bus. 
• Hold the pass still until you see a green light and hear a beep, this will show that your pass has been accepted.
• Enjoy your free bus travel!

When can I use my free travel pass?

Your pass entitles you to travel between 9:30am and the last service of the day Monday to Friday and all day at weekends and on public holidays.

Can I travel before 9:30am with a free travel pass?

Yes, if you want to travel before 9.30am, you can pay just £1.50 for a single journey. Simply place your free travel pass on the reader and if you want to pay with cash, put £1.50 in the cash chute. If you want to pay by contactless, ask the driver for the £1.50 ticket and place your contactless card/device on the reader when instructed by the driver.

We also have 4 week tickets and monthly subscriptions available if you travel frequently before 9:30am.

Please be ready to show your pass to authorised staff or ticket inspectors if requested at any time during your journey.

Do you offer Ring and Ride door-to-door transport?

Our sister company, Ring and Ride is a door-to-door transport service for anyone who lives in the urban areas of the West Midlands who find it difficult or impossible to use normal public transport.

Customers can use the service for travel for the same purpose they would do on normal public transport such as commuting to and from work, visiting friends, shopping and leisure activities, to visit someone in hospital or for healthcare appointments. Exchange Programs for Foreigners Who Want to Study in Russia

Nowadays, going abroad for studying is not a problem. Many countries are introducing quarantine restrictions, so taking part in a student exchange program opens an array of benefits.

Adventurous students can get not only a brilliant education but also an eye-opening travel experience. For some students, this is an opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture of another country. Moreover, a chance to improve your skills in a foreign language is an advantage.

Russia is known for its centuries-old history and classical traditions. The country can also boast its strong scientific community and high level of education. Years of educational experience combine with modern technology, comfortable campuses, and innovation laboratories.

Today, it is much easier for foreign applicants to get higher education in Russia. You can do it as easily as it would be to find a tutor or other type of external academic help online. Students can enter either on a commercial basis or with a scholarship.

Medicine, engineering specialties and IT are especially popular among the areas of studying. Foreigners also focus on economics, finance, and natural sciences. Still, for those willing to become professional writers or artists, there is a choice of more creative programs.

Below we provide you with a list of the most prestigious opportunities for those who want to get an education in Russia. Find the exchange program that suits you and make your student life unforgettable!

You might have already heard something about Erasmus. This is one of the most famous exchange programs organized by the EU. It gives the opportunity to study, internship, or teach in another country. Yet a target state must take part in the Erasmus program. The terms of study and internship vary from 3 months to 1 year each, up to 2 years in total.

The geography of Erasmus+ has expanded throughout the years. It now encompasses not only the member states of the European Union but also partner countries. These are divided into 13 geographic regions. And the Russian Federation is one of them. The country’s capital, Moscow, is famous for its array of prestigious educational institutions. The top-ranking are:

• MIPT (Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology);
• MGIMO (Moscow State Institute of International Relations);
• MEPhL (National Research Nuclear University);
• MSLU (Moscow State Linguistic University);
• REA (Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics);
• BMSTU (Bauman Moscow State Technical University).

All these institutions of higher education cooperate with many foreign universities. This contributes to the improvement of the qualifications of students in the framework of international exchange programs, such as Erasmus+.

AIFS Study Abroad in Russia

AIFS (American Institute for Foreign Study) is a company that manages various educational exchange programs. It was founded in 1964 and has already helped more than 1.5 million students with their international education goals.

Built on the values of cultural exchange, AIFS offers foreign students an interesting opportunity to spend a semester or year in the Russian Federation. It cooperates with Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. Thus, many academic program options are available. The program covers arts and humanities. These are political science, history, sociology, Russian language, Classic Literature.

The period of studying is not consistent, depending on the program you choose. Have you ever admired the works of legendary Russian poets or expressed interest in the country’s history? If yes, you are welcome to take part in any of these programs.

Council of International Educational Exchange (CIEE)

CIEE partner institutions are also located in the cultural capital of the Russian Federation, Saint Petersburg. The programs are aimed at strengthening the existing skills in the Russian language. Even so, the students have the opportunity to attend lessons in the English language as well as Russian classes, depending on the level.

Apart from education, international exchange students will take part in the volunteering process. It not only allows you to use all your skills in practice but also helps to integrate into the local community.

The period of studying at St. Petersburg State University varies from 11 and up to 37 weeks. Different cultural activities are also included in the agenda.

Indeed, the city has a lot to offer: from the Hermitage Museum to the Peterhof Palace, from the Peter and Paul Fortress to the Pushkin’s Apartment Museum and the list is non-exhaustive.

SPAS is an American organization conducting international exchange programs to Russia and Eurasia. If you express interest in political studies and diplomacy, the offer of this provider is for you. SPAS cooperates with the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).

It is Eurasia’s leading institution for international studies. Despite the limited field of study, students can still choose the course that suits their interests. The courses available include the following subjects:

• International Relations;
• International Policy & Diplomacy;
• International Business;
• Russian Language;
• Russian & East European Studies.

The only rule for the applicants is to know the English language. This is crucial as some lessons, as well as meetings with politicians, experts, and other leaders, are in English.

KEI is the Knowledge Exchange Institute that has been serving the students’ needs since its foundation in 1997. The main goal of its programs is to provide students with an opportunity to gain industry-specific knowledge. Apart from that, it aims to give them some practical skills for the future profession.

The most popular programs at Moscow State University are connected to either medicine and health or science, mathematics, and engineering. Even so, the list of courses available for study is much more extensive.

International exchange students interested in business, culture, history, politics, or international relations will also find suitable subjects.

It is worth noting that the courses are in both Russian and English. So proficiency or at least intermediate level is necessary. The host university is MSU (Lomonosov Moscow State University). It is a leading higher educational institution not only in the Russian Federation but also in the whole world.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
