Full Review

Whether you’re a business traveler, red-eye-regular, or transcontinental conqueror, chances are you’ve fallen asleep on a plane, train, car, or bus and encountered a crick in your neck as a result. When you’ve spent hours in transport, the last thing you need is to arrive at your destination in pain.

While any jaunt through an airport convenience store will offer a plethora of neck pillows, variety is low, prices are high and you might not be sure what to look for in a product. We’ve done the leg work for you by testing out the Trtl Travel Pillow, a unique alternative to the traditional travel pillow.

One common complaint with the traditional style of travel pillow is that it has a tendency to push your neck or head forward from the seat a bit too much. Depending on your body structure, this might not be a huge deal. If it is a big deal and you need an alternative, you may want to consider the Trtl.

The Trtl pillow is composed of a fleece, scarf-like wrap which is secured with a Velcro strip. You wrap it around your neck and an enclosed plastic brace provides neck support, holding your head and chin in place while you doze off. The fabric is relatively thin, so it doesn’t add bulk behind your head—allowing you to rest comfortably against the seat headrest. If you’re a head bobber, get ready for a new life of supported, uninterrupted sleep!

The fleece fabric is light enough to be breathable, while still offering enough density to avoid stretching out and losing that supportive nature. Fleece is notoriously soft and provides a comfy, cozy feel as it buffers your head and neck from the interior brace. The fabric on the pillow is seriously soft and relatively lightweight considering the support it offers. Think of a light, fall style sweater, in neck-pillow form! What’s not to like?

The brace itself is composed of a firm plastic, flexible enough to provide some “give.” You can easily flatten it inside of your bag (approximately 50% more flat than in standard form), before you have to worry about it snapping. The pillow is secured in place by a strip of velcro which has a long connection point, allowing you to adjust the fit for whatever position you’d like. Conveniently, you can remove the brace from the fabric when you need to give the fleece a wash.

Trtl Brace Removal Pouch

Getting used to this style of pillow certainly takes some patience, along with a bit of trial and error. It took quite a bit of fidgeting and three flights to find the perfect position to use this sucker.

The best method we found was to, first of all, position the brace on the side of your neck. You can opt for putting it right in front, so your chin sits on it—but we found this to be a little unnatural. It puts quite a bit of pressure on your jaw which is just a weird feeling to get used to.

Tightening the velcro will give you more support, but it’s kind of a double-edged sword. You know that feeling when you put a Band-aid on too tight around your finger? Yeah, it’s a similar feeling around your neck. Not comfy. When it is too tight, it can cause pressure on your jaw. You should be able to find a happy medium here that will give you enough support without strangling you, it might just take a few attempts.

Trtl Velcro Detail

We did also find that this pillow works really well with a hoodie, if you’ve got one handy. You can kind of situate the base of the pillow inside the collar, which helps it stay upright. Plus, hoodies are clearly one of the most comfortable options for sleeping on a plane, so it’s a win-win.

Trtl with Hoodie

No matter how you slice it, getting used to this and finding your perfect setup can be a bit frustrating. To make matters worse, throwing headphones into the mix can complicate things. When paired with your run of the mill Apple wired headphones, the plastic brace of the pillow has a tendency to disrupt the base of the ear bud. This should only be a problem on one ear (whatever side the brace is on), but is nevertheless annoying.

Over-ear headphones aren’t a solution either, as the brace gets in the way of one side—so you’re back to one ear listening. If you’re looking for sleep, this works great (an earplug in the other ear can help light sleepers) but if you’d like to nod off to a nice movie you’ll have to settle for audio in one ear.

The pillow itself is much lighter and more compact than any other pillow we’ve seen, with the exception of inflatable travel pillows. We don’t really like having to blow up pillows, but hey, if getting red-faced and out of breath in the terminal is your thing, more power to you. We found that the Trtl tucked nicely into the Fjallraven Kanken Mini —even with books, art supplies, a camera and a wallet crammed in there—which says something about the size of this thing.

While we do like the overall design and function of this pillow, we would have loved to see a small attachment to hook a carabiner to the pillow. Strapping it to the exterior of a travel backpack would be convenient. Without an attachment it either has to go inside a bag or in your hands. We like to keep our hands free (hence the backpack obsession ). We think you’ll agree that comfortable sleep is the happiest sleep. Nothing but Zzzzs and smiles here!

Why the Trtl Travel Pillow Is the Best Travel Neck Pillow

My fiancé’s fear of flying meant he couldn’t sleep on airplanes—until i let him borrow my trtl travel pillow..

Welcome to AFAR Approved: a deep dive into the travel items that we’re totally obsessed with, never leave behind, and can’t stop telling our friends about.

I’m not going to lie—I’m an excellent traveler. I travel frequently and I can sleep on pretty much any form of transportation. Give me a window seat or something to lean against and I’m out from the second the plane ascends or the train leaves the station (or the boat disembarks, or . . .) until I arrive at my destination.

My fiancé, Vinny, on the other hand, is the opposite. He has a serious fear of flying (or as he puts it, “just doesn’t like it that much”), which I learned on our first flight together: a three-hour trip from New York to Miami. He was irritable and antsy leading up to the flight, and in the air he aggressively went through an entire pack of gum, blasted a pump-you-up playlist, squeezed my hand until it went numb, and ultimately wanted my window shade down .

It works out in some respects: Have you ever met anyone who always wants the middle seat? But when we were booking flights to Sicily a couple of years ago (New York to Rome, Rome to Palermo for a grand total of nearly 10 hours on a plane), I was the one who felt fear. I knew I would sleep the whole way. I had secured a window seat and had even bought myself my very first travel pillow on Amazon Prime Day . But how was I supposed to sleep knowing Vinny would be awake the whole time freaking out? And, even if I could sleep, I knew he would be cranky and tired when we got there. I started to think of all the future trips I wanted to take together. Traveling is one of my favorite things, but how would we be able to go all over the world if he’s so uncomfortable flying?

After boarding the plane, I told him to have some wine. Then I offered him my brand new Trtl Travel Pillow , which is more of a soft fleece scarf with a slim neck support frame inside, than a pillow per se. He told me he wouldn’t sleep anyway and that he felt it would look weird. But I appealed to his health-conscious side: It’s supposed to be better for your neck. He reluctantly agreed and secured it around his neck with the Velcro fastening. Soon after drink service, he fell asleep with nothing to lean against except for my Trtl. I was overjoyed—suddenly our future trips came back into the picture as I leaned against the window and drifted off to sleep somewhat uncomfortable, but happy.

The Trtl's slim design means it takes up less space than other travel pillows when you're on the road.

The Trtl’s slim design means it takes up less space than other travel pillows when you’re on the road.

He likes to give some credit to the wine, but I can tell you that on the way home from Sicily, I did not have a window seat. I had an aisle, which meant I had nothing to lean on, and when I reminded him that that was in fact my pillow and took it back, I slept. He didn’t. We both had wine again.

Typically, I’m not one for packing lots of special travel gear. I have the earpods that came with my iPhone, a two-wheel roller bag I’ve been using since 2008, and my “airport uniform” of a hoodie, leggings, and big sunglasses. Until recently, the most effort I was making was a reusable water bottle , but now I can’t stop telling everyone I know about the Trtl Travel Pillow. And if I have it with me, I make everyone try it on.

What makes the Trtl pillow different from other travel pillows and worth its price tag?

The Trtl Travel Pillow is mechanically engineered for maximum neck support and comfort. It feels a little strange putting it on the first time (though it gives you instructions of where to put your neck, chin, and jaw) and sort of looks like a neck brace. But who cares how it looks when you’re getting peaceful sleep on an airplane and waking up with zero neck stiffness?

And as an added bonus, the pillow is much more compact than a traditional U-shaped travel pillow. It fits inside carry-on luggage, backpacks, or large purses without taking up much space and weighs just half a pound. Plus, it’s machine washable, and we all know that now is the time to be deep-cleaning all your travel gear .

I have the original Trtl in gray and bought it when there were just a few colors available. Now, there’s a variety of colors, a kids’ version (ages 8+), and the Trtl Pillow Plus , which can be adjusted to different heights and is made with a more breathable fabric. All of them are compact, easy to use, and comfortable.

The Trtl Pillow Plus can be adjusted to different heights for a customized fit.

The Trtl Pillow Plus can be adjusted to different heights for a customized fit.

As soon as we got back from Sicily I bought Vinny his own Trtl Travel Pillow in black. Now that international flights are back, I know we’ll be breaking out our Trtl pillows more than ever. But even if it’s for naps during holiday road trips or whenever I start commuting on the Long Island Railroad again, I know one thing: I’ll never travel without my Trtl ever again.

Brand Snapshot

The idea for the trtl brand first came about in 2010, when a couple of college roommates began experimenting with different ways to sleep on the go. After four years and dozens of prototypes, the trtl travel pillow was born! It was an instant hit on Amazon (earning record-breaking sales), gained popularity at the MTV European Music Awards, and even took home E-Commerce Exporter of the Year at the Scottish Export Awards.

I’ve already had the pleasure of reviewing the Original trtl Travel Pillow , and after thoroughly testing it, I could see what all the fuss was about! But this review focuses specifically on the trtl Travel Pillow Plus, the “new and improved” model. So follow along as I take you through my personal experience snoozing with it so you can determine whether or not it’s the right fit for you!

What Is The trtl Travel Pillow Plus Made Of?

When I first unpacked the trtl Plus, I immediately noticed how similar it looks to the original model. It’s lightweight, compact, and resembles a scarf crossed with a neck brace. But as I explored it a bit more, I noticed some key differences that make this one a little more advanced.

Firstly, the cover fabric is made from a blend of polyester, spandex, rayon, and fleece, which combine to offer a soft, stretchy, and breathable feel . The Original trtl Travel Pillow is covered in 100% fleece, which is a little too warming for my taste. So, sleepers who run hot might be most compatible with the trtl Plus.

trtl travel pillow plus cover fabric

Secondly, two velcro patches (instead of one) keep the fabric sleeve wrapped around your neck so the pillow doesn’t slip off mid-slumber. Meanwhile, two pieces of memory foam provide some extra cushion, and two knobs allow you to adjust the height of the plastic insert .

All trtl travel pillows are filled with a hard yet flexible C-shaped plastic apparatus designed to keep your head and neck in a safe position while you travel. But how does it work, and is it comfortable enough for a long haul? Let’s take a closer look.

How Do You Use The trtl Travel Pillow Plus?

Like the original trtl pillow, the trtl Plus is designed to promote healthy posture when you’re in the upright position. Essentially, whether you’re on a long plane ride or sitting shot-gun on a road trip, the plastic piece inside this pillow is meant to hold your head in neutral alignment with your spine. So let’s take a look at how to put it on!

First, hold the pillow out in front of you, with the sleeve totally detached from the velcro patches. Then, position the plastic part of the pillow against your neck, with the top of the C-curve supporting your jaw, and the bottom resting on top of your shoulder. Wrap the sleeve around your neck, and affix it to the two velcro patches to keep it secure. Finally, lean your face against the plastic part and allow it to cradle your head until you doze off.

Now, if you’re feeling confused about how to wear this accessory, keep in mind that the entire thing is labeled with instructions. You can remove the labels if you like, but I left them on for a bit of extra guidance.

My Experience With The Trtl Travel Pillow Plus

As I mentioned up top, there is nothing plush about this pillow. Yes, the memory foam pieces provide a nice buffer between you and the plastic insert (which, in my experience, makes this model cozier than the original). But if you’re looking for a super cushy travel companion — this isn’t it.

That said, this pillow did an excellent job of keeping my posture healthy. The plastic insert comfortably locked my head and neck in place so that my spine didn’t deviate out of neutral alignment. Remember — the concept behind this design is that plastic is less likely to compress as compared to foam, polyester, or a softer material . So no matter how long your trip takes, this pillow was built to maintain its shape and support.

I also found the cover fabric to be very breathable; in fact, this pillow never made me warm. But perhaps the coolest perk the trtl Plus has to offer is its height adjustability . By turning the little toggles on the cover, you can make the plastic insert taller or shorter in order to fit your unique needs.

trtl travel pillow plus adjustability

I’m quite petite, so I only ever used the shortest setting. However, I like that I can lend this pillow to my (much) taller partner, or share it when we take trips together! In my experience, this pillow’s customizable height settings makes it great for sleepers of all sizes.

Ultimately, I prefer the trtl Travel Pillow Plus to the original. It’s more breathable, more comfortable, and features an adjustable design. Of course, these added features make the Plus about $20 more expensive, but I think it’s worth the extra dough.

But the thing I love about both trtl pillows is that the plastic insert is unmatched in its ability to support me in the upright position . If you’re looking for a travel pillow that’ll help you maintain healthy posture, I think the trtl brand is a great way to go.

The Verdict : The Trtl Travel Pillow Plus does an amazing job of keeping my head and neck supported when I’m in the upright position. Plus, its adjustable height settings make it shareable between me and my taller partner! Two thumbs way up.

Should I Buy The trtl Travel Pillow Plus?

Before we wrap up this trtl Travel Pillow Plus review, let’s recap the highlights to help you decide if it’s the right fit for you:

  • Small & Compact – This pillow weighs less than a pound and can easily fit into a carry-on bag. If you’re tired of dragging a bulky pillow around when you travel, this might be the small and compact accessory you’ve been searching for.
  • Breathable Cover – If the idea of wrapping this pillow’s cover fabric around your neck worries you, take comfort in the fact that it’s made from a very breathable material. In my experience, the spandex and nylon promoted a lot of airflow and kept my neck from getting too hot. Plus, it’s easily removable and machine washable.
  • Head & Neck Support – My favorite thing about this pillow is how well it cradled my head and neck. Obviously, sitting in an upright position is not ideal when you want to catch some Zzz’s, but this pillow made me feel cozy and supported. Not to mention, the memory foam cushioning prevents the plastic insert from pressing into my skin.
  • Adjustable Height – The main difference between this pillow and the original trtl travel pillow is that you can adjust the height of this one! This feature allows you to make the plastic insert taller or shorter in order to meet the unique needs of your body.

trtl Travel Pillow Plus Complaints

This travel pillow gets rave reviews from me, but there are still some things to consider before you make your purchase:

  • Wash Care – I like that you can machine wash and dry the cover fabric, but it’s important to note that you have to remove and re-insert the plastic part every time. This isn’t a huge deal, of course, but it can be a little tough to get the insert back in the cover fabric correctly.
  • Not Fluffy – I know I keep saying this, but it’s very important to remember that this is not a plush pillow. Folks looking for a fluffy, traditionally shaped pillow should look elsewhere!
  • Headphones – Sleepers who like to use over-the-ear headphones might find it difficult to wear them with this pillow. In my experience, the plastic part of the pillow kept pushing my headphones up and away from my ear (until I eventually settled on ear-buds).

Anything Else I Should Know?

  • Weight – less than 1 lb
  • Free Shipping – within the U.S.
  • 60-Day Return Policy
  • Wash Care – remove plastic insert before washing on a cool, gentle cycle with mild detergent. Then, air-dry or tumble-dry on low heat.
  • Other trtl Travel Pillows – Original trtl Travel Pillow, trtl Travel Pillow Junior (for kids)

What is a trtl pillow plus?

The trtl Travel Pillow Plus is similar to the original model in that it uses a C-shaped plastic insert to keep your head and neck in a safe position when you’re on the go. However, the trtl Travel Pillow Plus comes with adjustable height settings, extra memory foam padding, and a more breathable cover fabric.

Can you pack a trtl pillow?

One of the best things about the trtl travel pillow is that it’s very lightweight, small, and easy to store in a carry-on bag!

How do you clean a trtl pillow?

All trtl travel pillows can be washed by machine, but you must remove the plastic insert first. Additionally, use a gentle cycle and mild detergent to prevent any damage to the material. Then, allow it to air-dry, or tumble-dry on low heat before re-inserting the plastic piece.

Trtl Travel Pillow Review: Worth The Hype? [2024]

Trtl Travel Pillow Review: Worth The Hype? [2024]

Economy seats on international flights are a nightmare to get good rest in. Trtl travel pillow was recently featured heavily on TikTok being the solution to the good sleep you desperately need. Is it worth the hype?

trtl travel pillow temu

Imagine this: you've just finished a seven-hour international flight in coach, and you step off the plane feeling fresh, chill, and ready to take on your adventure. Ain't that the dream?

Let's be real, trying to sleep sitting up on a plane without getting a stiff neck is a tall order.

Enter the travel pillow, the superhero of flights. Getting one of the best travel pillows out there could totally change your travel game. But what feels comfy is different for everyone, and picking the right design can be tricky. That's where the Trtl Travel Pillow comes in. It promises to give you all the comfy sleep vibes you need during your journey.

The Trtl Travel Pillow's got a pretty unique design that's been getting loads of attention and rave reviews lately. But does it live up to the buzz? Is this the best travel pillow you should be reaching for or are there better ones out there?

As a traveler, I've gone through my fair share of travel pillows, including the Trtl travel pillow. Let me walk you through my experiences.

In this review, I'm gonna dig into all the nitty-gritty details about it, share what other travelers are saying, and figure out if it's really worth the hype.

What Is the Trtl Travel Pillow?

Trtl Travel is a Canadian-based travel accessory brand with the flagship product being the  Trtl Travel Pillow .

The Trtl Travel Pillow is designed to give you restful sleep while flying, but it’s not like other travel pillows you’ve seen. The product is a scarf you wrap around your neck with a neck support frame for you to rest your neck, chin, and jaw.

What’s more, you can adjust it in many different ways to provide the best neck support for maximum comfort. Let me walk you through what features the Trtl pillow entails.

Features of the Trtl Travel Pillow

Cozy material.

The scarf is made from soft, hypoallergenic fleece and foam. It stays firmly in place once positioned, thanks to a strong Velcro fastening. It’s also fully machine washable, which is excellent to know! Especially considering how unhygienic most  airline pillows and blankets  are.

The material can feel cozy and warm, but it may feel  too  warm to some people in specific environments. So, keep that in mind if you run on the warmer side.

Woman sleeping with trtl travel pillow on plane

Compact & Light

As the Trtl Travel Pillow was specifically designed with travelers in mind, it’s lightweight, coming in at less than half a pound! It also folds down compact for you to stuff in your carry-on bag, wrap around your bag strap, or just clip into a suitcase. So, no more lugging around a bulky pillow through the airport!

Ergonomic Design

There’s no denying that the Trtl Travel Pillow looks a bit strange when you first see it. It might look like a cross between a scarf and a neck brace to some. But that’s specifically part of the ergonomic design that’ll completely support your head and eliminate the head bobbing as you sleep!

With the shoulder supports that let your head rest in a natural position, you can gain an actual sleeping experience with none of the neck pains.

Plus, it can be a stylish alternative to other flight pillows, and it’s currently available in black, gray, coral, and red.

trtl travel pillow temu

Where can you buy the Trtl Travel Pillow?

You can buy the Trtl Travel Pillow directly from the  Trtl travel website  with free 1-3 day shipping, and there are often site discounts. Or you can conveniently buy Trtl pillows on  Amazon .

Now, Trtl has a few variations of its product. In fact, the company launched the  Trtl Pillow Plus  via Kickstarter in 2018. It uses the same technology but with more adjustability options for people of different heights.

Although this variation is not available through Amazon yet, you can find it on the company website! That also goes for the  junior version  of the pillow for kids aged 8+.

And as you prepare for your next flight, don’t miss out on these  essential travel accessories  and  travel gadgets  for your packing list. Make sure your next journey goes smoothly!

What People Are Saying About the Trtl Travel Pillow

It’s fair to say that travelers who have tried the Trtl Travel Pillow have generally been delighted with the product. The pillow currently has four stars on Amazon with over 15,000 reviews.

Travel sites are giving the product fantastic reviews as well, with Travel+Leisure calling it a “ sleep savior ” and the BuzzFeed reviewer claiming, “I’ve  truly never slept better on a plane ”.

Couple with luggage and stored trtl pillow

When you look at verified reviews from real customers, most seem to highly recommend the product and comment on its effectiveness.

“I was able to sleep in coach!”

“OMG… it’s super amazing. Now I can sleep on planes and not feel neck cramps.”

“My friend used it a week later during his 7-hour flight and immediately purchased it for himself.”

However, with its relatively steep price tag for a travel pillow, there are some criticisms on the pillow. Some Trtl customers reviews complained about the shape of the pillow not being very travel friendly and awkward to take on flights. Others talked about fit of the pillow, being less snug for those with smaller necks.

Generally speaking, most people's negative review on the pillow revolved around questioning whether the product itself was worth the steep price tag.

Is the Trtl Travel Pillow Worth It?

Yes, the Trtl Travel Pillow is definitely worth a try if you're having difficulties finding the best travel pillow that'll help you get a good nap in during flights. If you want to actually sleep while traveling and wake up refreshed when you reach your destination, the Trtl sleep scarf is a reliable albeit slightly pricey option.

Even with the standard U-shaped pillows, it’s hard to fall asleep without waking up every few minutes. But this ergonomic pillow takes that into account and is an excellent solution for upright sleeping.

I’ve tried it myself after looking at reviews, and I have to say, the Trtl Travel Pillow absolutely works while stuck sleeping in a sitting position. The pillow’s unique neck hammock design gives your head a comfortable place to rest naturally, and in no time, you’ll be out like a light.

While the price tag is not budget friendly and the shape of the pillow may be slightly awkward to handle, the Trtl Travel Pillow overall has merit to be one of the best travel pillows I've used so far.

Our Rating: 4.6/5

  • Comfortable head and neck support
  • Lessen neck pain
  • Lightweight and compact for travel
  • Machine washable
  • Tad too warm for some people
  • Looks odd when worn
  • Relatively pricey

Bali tourists surfing the street after flash flooding

Ever stumbled off a long-haul flight with a spasming neck and spine twisted like a spirelli noodle?

Sleeping in economy is modern-day medieval torture. Our bodies aren’t designed to be strapped into a sow stall and rocketed through the sky in a metal can for 10-plus hours. If you’re going to attempt purgatory on a plane, you need a travel pillow. A good one.

On a recent 54-hour, eight-flight journey from far north-east Canada to Melbourne, I flight tested five different brands. I also got an expert opinion from a chiropractor.

Here’s how they measured up.

Woollip $69.95. Picture: Catherine Best

Disclaimer: I was embarrassed to use Woollip. The inflatable face-plant pillow looks weird but … it was surprisingly comfortable. Inspired by massage chairs, Woollip was created by French father and daughter team Franck and Diane Levy, thanks to a successful crowd-funding campaign. The theory goes that when seated, gravity pulls you forward, so Woollip (pilloow spelt backwards) supports the body’s natural leaning posture, warding off a stiff neck. Woollip inflates easily with about six puffs, has a face cradle and side arm cavities (you can watch your device through the peep hole) and folds into a light, book-sized pouch. It was handy on my small Twin-Otter flight from Saglek Airstrip to Goose Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador because the aircraft had no headrests. Even without a tray table for support, I managed a few bursts of shut-eye and the position felt natural and strangely comforting, foetal even. I experimented with side positions but couldn’t get comfortable. I’m not sure I would use Woollip on an overnight flight but it was great for a nap.

Expert Dr David Jones of Better Backs chiropractic in Melbourne says: “This is quite clever but impractical. It offers many options for variable sleep positions, but none of these are really that great for your neck. But for some people, it could allow them the option of different sleeping positions.”

Samsonite Memory Foam $29.95. Picture: Catherine Best

SAMSONITE MEMORY FOAM , $36.95

A step up from your two-for-$30 airport cheapies, the Samsonite memory foam pillow has a classic U-shape design but with more support than a bargain-basement brand. Rolled up, the pillow stuffs into an attached drawstring pouch and is reasonably compact (about the size of a mini rockmelon). The snuggly velour cover (removable) is promising but that’s where the comfort ends. The pillow has way too much bulk behind the neck and not enough structure to hold it in place. I tested this pillow on four ‘milk-run’ flights from Goose Bay to St John’s and found that it kept pushing my head and neck forward at an irregular angle. If I rested my head on the side arms, the pillow would eventually slide out of position. It was uncomfortable and only slightly better than a rolled-up jacket.

Expert says: “This is an all-round easy-to-use travel pillow. Utilising memory foam, it contours to your neck and has side supports to help decrease side head flop. However, it would be better if these supports were adjustable. In my opinion, it is probably the easiest to use of the pillows and would suit most people’s necks and provide reasonable support.”

Good Flight Sleep $60. Picture: Catherine Best

GOOD FLIGHT SLEEP , $60

Good Flight Sleep takes the U-pillow to a whole new level. Australian designed and made, the pillow has a slim Velcro strip that fastens at the back of the neck and padded plastic ventilation inserts that support the chin at the front. This means three things: the pillow doesn’t slide around, the neck has good radial support and the head isn’t pushed forward unnaturally. Tick, tick, tick. The pillow comes in two sizes, is super-light and can be squished into your carry-on bag or attached to an external strap. I tested Good Flight Sleep on flight number six from St John’s to Toronto and found it to be incredibly ergonomic. My head was able to sink back comfortably into the seat and there was no head-lolling or pillow slippage. I even inadvertently used it back to front once and found it no less effective. My only criticism is that the chin support could be a little higher and more padded.

Expert says: “This is less of a sleep aid and more of a neck brace. It doesn’t really hug the cervical lordosis (curve of your neck), which is one of the features I was looking for. However, if you are restless and find your travel pillows fall out of position, that won’t be a problem with this pillow as it velcros in place.”

trtl $54.95. Picture: Catherine Best

TRTL , $72.99

It looks like a big cumbersome scarf, but don’t let the unconventional design put you off — trtl is a travel innovation. More neck swaddle than pillow (stay with me), the trtl has a curved internal spine that nuzzles between the head and shoulder. The end of the fleece scarf wraps around the neck and chin and is fixed in place with a velcro strip. I used the trtl from Toronto to Vancouver and it provided wonderful neck and chin support. It took a bit of getting used to and required a few adjustments (sorry, fellow passengers) to get the position and tension just right. Once comfortably fitted, there was no way my head was going anywhere, and my neck felt really well supported. The only drawback: there’s no flexibility to change your head position without unravelling it and starting over, which is really disruptive when you’re trying to sleep. Light and compact, the trtl is easy to stash in your luggage, despite its unusual shape.

Expert says: “I quite like this design and think it is quite supportive of the cervical curve, however the manufacturer instructs you to wear it on the side or front of your neck. That would be good for those whose chins fall to their chest, but I feel that it would be difficult for most people to use and get good support.”

Cabeau Evolution S3, $59.95. Picture: Catherine Best

CABEAU EVOLUTION S3 , US$39.99

The Rolls-Royce of U-pillows, Cabeau succeeds where many others fail. The difference? Cabeau has clip-in toggles at the front and a slim-line design at the back. That means full radial head and neck support, no sliding around and no pushing the head unnaturally forward. The pillow also comes with nifty straps that hook over the wings of the headrest in planes. I saved this bad boy for the longest leg — the 15.5-hour marathon flight from Vancouver to Melbourne. I managed to get 5.5 hours’ broken sleep (so says my smart watch) and had no neck stiffness or discomfort. The memory-foam pillow sculpted beautifully to my head, neck and shoulders and was more cushioned than the other pillows. I didn’t use the seat straps though because they kept tugging the pillow up and weren’t needed. The Cabeau folds into a neat zip case that can be clipped onto a backpack. It’s slightly bigger than the Samsonite when stowed and a little heavier than the other brands. Otherwise, it’s a winner. And it even comes with a sneaky zip compartment to stash your earplugs.

Expert says: “This is a great mix of adjustability, function and comfort. It supports the neck with memory foam that moulds to your neck curve (cervical lordosis) better than Samsonite, and the seat attachment keeps your head in that ideal sleep posture. This ticks the most boxes for me and gives good support.”

The Silly-Looking Trtl Travel Pillow Is the Only Way I Can Sleep on Flights

The Trtl travel pillow.

I will almost always choose function over fashion, even if that means looking like a total dork in public. I’ve sported a fanny pack since before it was cool, I frequently don my unflattering but extremely protective sun hat on hikes, and I have no qualms using my funny-looking wearable reading light on public transportation.

But the Trtl Pillow , a goofy travel pillow that looks and acts more like a neck brace, was where I drew the line. A long-standing pick in our guide to the best travel pillows , the Trtl Pillow is essentially a fleece scarf with a plastic insert on one side that keeps your neck stable as you doze on flights.

I had a hunch that this pick, loved by side-sleepers like myself, would lull me to sleep in a way that traditional neck pillows never could—but I didn’t think I would ever be tired enough to willingly strap on what looks like a padded neck brace in public.

Spoiler alert: I tried it after snagging a lightning deal on Prime Day. I slept so well that day on my cross-country flight that I woke up at my destination well rested—and kicking myself for being embarrassed by one of the single greatest pieces of travel gear I’ve ever owned.

trtl travel pillow temu

Trtl Pillow

A pillow for one-sided neck support only.

It’s a fleece scarf with a built-in plastic brace—like a one-sided neck brace but softer and cozier. However, it’s not so great if you tend to shift position while you sleep, and it costs more than the other pillows we recommend.

Buying Options

The perfect pillow for people who can’t sleep on planes.

A person using the Trtl travel pillow while sleeping at an airport.

Though the Trtl is technically a pillow, I like to think of it more as a padded pedestal to rest your head against as you sleep, held in place by a fleece scarf that wraps around your neck and closes with Velcro.

The bendy, plastic brace offers the perfect amount of neck support for people (like me) who find it easiest to sleep upright by nodding their head to the side. I’d never had luck falling asleep with traditional neck pillows looped around my neck, which made me feel claustrophobic. But the Trtl Pillow’s soft fleece scarf has enough give that I find it comfortably supportive rather than constricting, and I appreciate that it keeps my head firmly in place so I don’t wake up with a crick in my neck. You can wear the Trtl Pillow on either side of your head—though you’ll need to take it off, flip it, and rewrap it if you want to switch midflight—and I’ve found it comfortable to use even when I get stuck in the dreaded middle seat.

This little pillow is ideal for an overpacker like me who rarely has space to spare in my carry-on. Because it folds down into a little bundle that lies almost completely flat, I can slip it between my laptop and the back of my backpack, where it takes up less space than a hardcover book. The Trtl Pillow is also small enough to fit into briefcases, purses, and some fanny packs, so it’s ideal for folks who don’t normally travel with backpacks. At only 5 ounces, the Trtl Pillow doesn’t add any noticeable weight to a bag.

And because airplanes are notoriously nasty, the Trtl Pillow is also machine-washable. Once you’re home, simply slip the plastic brace from the scarf before tossing it into the wash.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

My biggest gripe with the Trtl Pillow is that I can’t wear my over-ear noise-cancelling headphones while using it. Understandable, considering that my ear is pressed against the plastic ledge and couldn’t possibly accommodate a padded earcup, but annoying nonetheless. To block out plane noises while I nap, I use my Loop earplugs instead, which nestle in my ear and don’t interfere with the pillow when I nod off.

Since I’m almost always cold on planes, I love cozying up to the Trtl Pillow’s warm fleece scarf—but if you run hot, this pillow is probably not for you. It also doesn’t work well for people who nod forward or move their head from side to side while they sleep.

The Trtl Pillow is the priciest travel pillow we recommend. Our top pick, a more traditional travel pillow, costs $40. The price of the Trtl Pillow has risen significantly since I made my purchase last summer; it was originally $40 (before my Prime Day deal, which cut the price in half), whereas now the price sits around $60. I’ve had such success with the Trtl Pillow that I’d willingly pay full price for it even now, but it’s worth keeping an eye out for potential deals.

And, of course, the Trtl Pillow makes you look extremely silly—so silly that you, like me, may be hesitant to use it in public. But now that I’ve actually used it consistently for the past year and a half, I can say that it’s worth any side-eye you may catch from a seatmate. Before I tried the Trtl Pillow, I used to dread early-morning flights because I knew that I wouldn’t sleep a wink and that I’d inevitably arrive at my destination irritated and cranky. I’m a much happier traveler now that I know I’ll be able to drift off and rest my weary eyes after take-off, and that is worth looking a little ridiculous.

I actually slept!

Comfortable and very useful. Hated those around the neck pillows and the head bobbing and this erased that. Got some actual sleep on a flight for the first time.

Love this product!

This product made sitting upright in a coach airline seat comfortable! Would definitely recommend to anyone who has a plane right and must sit in coach.

Game changer/Best travel pillow

It is so comfortable and I actually fell asleep in the middle seat of the plane! I also used it on a long car ride and it was awesome to help me feel comfortable with my neck supported. Game changer !!

Slept on international flights

I usually can’t sleep for long on international flights, but with this product, ear plugs and an eye mask, I slept for the majority of my flights to and from India (I live in the Midwest).

We’ll help you decide if the Trtl Travel Plus is the right pillow for you based on criteria like feel, firmness, and sleeping position.

You may have heard of the Trtl Travel Pillow, but are you aware of the Trtl Pillow Plus? This pillow is similar to the original Trtl but with some welcome improvements. The Trtl Travel Pillow was thought up by two Scottish college friends back in 2013. The mechanical engineering graduates wanted to offer an alternative to traditional bulky travel pillows and thus the Trtl was born.

Instead of a foam U-shaped design, the Trtl is essentially a cross between a neck brace and scarf, with a foam-lined plastic support piece that sits between your shoulders and jaw, gently but firmly cradling the head.

In 2018 a crowdfunding campaign for the Trtl Pillow Plus was launched, to create an adjustable and more breathable version of the Trtl, and it’s now a permanent product. Is it worth the extra money? We’ll share how the Trtl Travel Pillow Plus stacks up in this in-depth review.

trtl Pillow Plus

trtl Pillow Plus

Sleep advisor score, who is the trtl travel pillow plus best for, pros: who might like the trtl travel pillow plus:.

  • Petite and taller people – The original Trtl has some great attributes, but it’s not adjustable, so shorter and taller people might find it doesn’t sit right. The Trtl Pillow Plus has an adjustable plastic support piece, allowing you to customize the size to fit you better.
  • People who like the original Trtl but want more padding and cooling – There’s a thicker foam lining on the Trtl Pillow Plus, which provides more cushioning against the concealed plastic support system. The fabric wrap is also more breathable than the original.
  • Those looking for a lightweight, compact travel pillow – Traditional travel pillows are often bulky, but the Trtl Pillow Plus is compact, weighing just under 9 ounces. It comes with a water-resistant carry pouch and can be easily stowed in a bag or wrapped around the handle of your carry-on.

Cons: Who Might Not Like the Trtl Travel Pillow Plus:

  • People who use over-ear headphones – If you like to use over-ear headphones while you sleep, you might find that the plastic insert gets in the way.
  • Those wanting a multi-use pillow – We think this Trtl pillow does a great job of supporting the head and neck but it’s not a regular plush pillow, so you can’t use it for lumbar support, tray table sleeping, or napping on the floor of the airport. Check out our Best Travel Pillows for more options.
  • Budget shoppers – At 89.99 dollars, the Trtl Pillow Plus is 40 dollars more than the original Trtl and isn’t the cheapest travel pillow on the market.

Sleep Advisor’s Testing Methodology

Buying a travel pillow can involve a lot of trial and error – and expense – and our aim is to provide facts and unbiased opinions to help you make an informed decision. We test pillows for qualities like comfort, support, durability, and ease of care, so you have a thorough understanding of the product before buying.

What is the Trtl Travel Pillow Plus Made of?

The Trtl Travel Pillow’s cover wrap is made of a light and breathable polyester, spandex, and rayon mix, which feels less warm than the fleece fabric of the original. However, there’s still a fleece lining for coziness. The original Trtl has a single velcro fastener, but the Trtl Pillow Plus has two, to help make it more secure. The pillow also comes with a water-resistant carrying bag.

The Trtl features a plastic support system that’s called a ‘flipper’, and it sits between your shoulder and jaw to cradle your head and keep it from bobbing around. The flipper can be adjusted via two dials, which increase or decrease the size, making it suitable for various body types. A thick layer of luxurious, high-density foam sits between the flipper and your head for added comfort.

Trtl Travel Pillow Plus Firmness & Feel

While a plastic inner support system might sound uncomfortable, we found it to be very comfy thanks to the thick layer of foam that lines it. This also helps provide head and neck support to keep pain at bay.

The polyester, spandex, and rayon wrap provides softness and breathability, while the fleece inside offers some cozy comfort. Even though this one doesn’t have as much fleece as the original, we’d argue that the Trtl Pillow Plus is actually cozier due to the extra foam on the support system, which provides a soft buffer. While this pillow is comfy and offers fantastic support, it’s not plush like a regular pillow and may take some getting used to.

As this isn’t a conventional travel pillow, it doesn’t have loft per se, but – as mentioned above – the Trtl Pillow Plus does feature thicker foam than the original Trtl, offering more of a buffer between your head and the plastic support system.

Weight (Density of the Pillow)

The Trtl Pillow Plus comes in at just under 9 ounces, which is slightly heavier than the 4.5-ounce Trtl original but still very lightweight.

Sleeping on the Trtl Travel Pillow Plus

We found the Trtl Travel Pillow Plus to be a great travel buddy, offering fantastic head and neck support regardless of whether our head tried to lean off to the side or to the front. However, travelers who like to rest their head on the tray table may be put off by the fact the Trtl offers zero cushioning for your head in this position, unlike a traditional travel pillow.

Side Sleepers

  • Side sleepers may struggle in the middle or aisle seat without having something to lean on, as they’re used to leaving their head to the side when sleeping. This is where the Trtl Pillow Plus comes in since the inner support system provides a secure surface to lean your head.
  • As the support is provided by foam-lined plastic, rather than pure foam, it doesn’t compress, thus keeping your head upright. The only issue we have is that you have to choose which side the support goes on, so you have to keep leaning your head that way. However, this shouldn’t be a problem if you have a preferred side for sleeping.

Back Sleepers

  • If you’re used to back sleeping, you may be comfortable reclining your seat in order to nap, though you could still find your head bobbing about. The Trtl Pillow Plus helps prevent movement by comfortably securing your head in place, and you can even position the support between your chest and chin when sleeping upright to maintain a healthy head and neck alignment.

Stomach Sleepers

  • Stomach sleepers are used to leaning forward to sleep, which can make it more challenging to sleep on planes. However, as above, the Trtl Pillow Plus does a great job at preventing your head from rolling forward when sleeping upright, which could help you sleep better on a plane.
  • With that in mind, if you’re someone who likes to rest their head on the tray table to sleep, the Trtl Pillow Plus isn’t plush, so you wouldn’t want to use it for that.

Sleep Advisor’s Performance Ratings for the Trtl Travel Pillow Plus

Temperature.

The Trtl Pillow Plus features a combination of polyester, spandex, and rayon fabric along with, a mesh strip of spandex and nylon and then fleece in the lining. This makes for much better temperature regulation than the original all-fleece Trtl and should mean less chance of a sweaty neck.

The main aim of the Trtl is support, and we feel it does a fantastic job at this. A plastic support system is used, as this can’t be compressed like a softer fill can, which helps keep your head upright when sleeping in a seat. The Trtl Pillow Plus is also height adjustable for tailored support.

The materials used seem high quality, but while the plastic insert feels durable (it’s designed to be strong yet flexible) we’d still warn against stuffing this at the bottom of your bag, just in case. We like that the Trtl Pillow Plus comes with a water-resistant carrying bag, unlike the original. This should help keep it in good condition while traveling.

We found the Trtl Pillow Plus was even more comfortable than the original, thanks to the adjustability and thicker foam pad that provides a better buffer between your face/head and the plastic support. We appreciated the breathable fabric on the Trtl Pillow Plus, which wasn’t sweaty like the original’s fleece.

The only downside is that you may have difficulty using this simultaneously with over-ear headphones.

Off-Gassing

The Trtl Pillow Plus does contain a small amount of foam, but this isn’t compressed in packaging, so we didn’t notice any off-gassing smell.

While the original Trtl pillow has a hypoallergenic cover, we did not find any details about this product being hypoallergenic or having any certifications. The good news, though, is that it’s machine washable, which should help with allergens.

Cleaning & Care

The Trtl Pillow Plus’ wrap is machine washable; simply take out the plastic insert and place the wrap in the machine on a cool wash with mild detergent. You can either air dry or machine dry (on low heat) your pillow, and as mentioned, the Trtl Pillow Plus comes with a water-resistant carry bag that should help keep it clean on your adventures.

Sleep Trial & Warranty

There’s no warranty with the Trtl Travel Pillow Plus, but you do get a 100-day money-back guarantee, so if you’ve tried the pillow and don’t like it, you can get a full refund (minus shipping).

Trtl Travel Pillow Plus Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between the trtl and trtl pillow plus.

There are several differences between the Trtrl and Trtl Plus, the first of which is the price difference; the Trtl is currently 49.99 dollars, while the Trtl Pillow Plus is 89.99 dollars. The Trtl has an all-fleece wrap, a fixed support system, and one velcro fastener, while the Trtl Plus has a more breathable polyester, spandex, and rayon wrap (with fleece lining), an adjustable support system, and two velcro fasteners. The Trtl is currently available in four colors, while the Trtl Plus is only available in two.

Can I wash my airplane pillow?

It depends on which one you have – check the care label or reach out to the manufacturer if in doubt. The Trtl Plus is machine washable, so long as you use mild detergent and cold water. Air dry or machine dry on low.

How do you wear a Trtl travel pillow?

To wear a Trtrl travel pillow, unwrap the pillow and place the supportive part either below your chin or on one side of your head. Wind the wrap part of the pillow around the back of your neck and continue around until it reaches the supportive part, fastening it in place with the velcro.

How do I choose a travel pillow?

To help you make a shortlist, take into account things like size, shape, portability, type, and, of course, price. It’s also helpful to read reviews like ours, which can give you more unbiased information than the manufacturer’s website might.

How Does the Trtl Travel Pillow Plus Pillow Compare to Other Pillows?

Who Should Get the Trtl Travel Pillow Plus?

  • Hot sleepers
  • Petite or taller people
  • Those who want a carrying pouch included

Who Should Get the Trtl Travel Pillow?

  • Shoppers on a smaller budget
  • People who tend to get cold on planes
  • Average-sized people

Our Final Thoughts on the Trtl Travel Pillow Plus

If you’re after a plush, squishy travel pillow that you can use for lumbar support or airport floor naps, this isn’t a great choice. However, it’s got great advantages those thicker travel pillows lack. It’s lightweight and compact while also being able to help keep your head upright while seated.

Average-size travelers and people who don’t overheat while sleeping should be fine with the original Trtl, but if you’re on the shorter/taller side or tend to run hot, then you’ll likely benefit from paying the extra 40 dollars for the Trtl Plus’ adjustable support and breathable wrap. Plus, you’ve got the 100-day money-back guarantee to make the most of, so give it a go and see how you feel. Our overall score for this product is 4.1 out of 5.

JS Newman (Amazon customer)

Game changer/Best travel pillow

It is so comfortable and I actually fell asleep in the middle seat of the plane! I also used it on a long car ride and it was awesome to help me feel comfortable with my neck supported. Game changer !!

Slept on international flights

I usually can’t sleep for long on international flights, but with this product, ear plugs and an eye mask, I slept for the majority of my flights to and from India (I live in the Midwest).

We tested four (more) travel pillows. One ruled them all.

Unless you’re in business or first class, transit sleep is never going to be your most restful snooze. The atmosphere is too disruptive, and the neighbors too loud. The seats? Not your bed — not even close.

To help make your bad sleep better, there’s the humble travel pillow — or, rather, countless humble travel pillows. The internet is overloaded with options to choose from, from the old-school models with beanbag fillings to the avant-garde . A few years ago, we put four to the test to see which were worth your money and carry-on space, and now we’re running it back with four more.

For this round, I polled my social media followers for their favorites and picked a few of the highest-rated on Amazon (whose founder, Jeff Bezos, owns The Washington Post). I gave them a spin on cross-country flights in economy, an hour-long ride to the airport and the way-back seat of a minivan on a six-hour road trip . (Prices listed are from our time of purchase.)

Snugl travel pillow, $42.95

The Snugl came highly recommended by a frequent-flying photographer friend. It’s robust, plush and silky, like a hybrid of the Cabeau Evolution Classic neck pillow and the Cushion Lab ergonomic travel pillow , but shapelier.

It wasn’t an immediate hit, although I did nap a little wearing the Snugl on a car ride. I could have used some more support, and I found it bulky. (One plus is the memory-foam material smushes down for more compact carrying.) Then I got home, and discovered I was missing out on a better way to wear it.

You naturally gravitate toward leaning your head against the Snugl’s higher, rounded side — that way the logo faces up, so it seems right, plus it looks like a little cup for your cheek. But you can actually wear it four different ways, according to its website: conventional, front position, reversed and over the shoulder. Three of those four have the pillow flipped, logo down, with that rounded side against your chest, back or shoulder. That flip is critical to reducing neck bend. It was a whole new pillow.

I was ready to write the Snugl off, and will now give it another chance; it has the potential to be truly great. The lesson is true for many neck pillows: There’s probably another way you could be wearing it that’s more comfortable. We actually often wear neck pillows backward; the fasteners are supposed to go in the back, usually.

Dot & Dot bendable memory-foam travel pillow, $19.99

The Dot & Dot bendable memory-foam travel pillow , which is kind of like a pool noodle with its malleable spine, is the cheapest of our roundup. You can remove its cotton cover to wash it, just in case you nap too hard and drool a little.

I packed the Dot & Dot for my six-hour trip in the back of the minivan that called for a 5:30 a.m. wake-up but spent most of the ride feeling uncompelled to use it. It was just ... fine. Not big enough to add much value, no matter which way I wrangled it.

But I was confused; I chose it for its high ratings on Amazon. So when I got back from the trip, I pulled up the reviews. It turns out, a lot of people also felt “meh” about the pillow but still gave it high ratings anyway. Many people rated the pillow highly for using it in a hotel bed , not upright on a plane or car. Lesson learned: Star ratings do not tell the whole story.

Sunany inflatable neck pillow, $23.99

On the glowing recommendations of a few travelers on social media, I ordered the Sunany inflatable neck pillow . Unlike the others, this one promises comfort by way of leaning forward onto a blowup head rest that you place on your lap or tray table, complete with a face hole like a massage table. On a backbreaking long-haul flight, I can see the appeal.

On a medium-haul, however, I felt highly silly inflating my ginormous flotation device. I got a lot of curious looks as the gray mass ballooned. It was too big for me (I’m 5-foot-4), so my head kept creeping deeper into the face hole, leading to some discomfort.

If I were taking a red-eye or international adventure and could find a smaller model, I would be bullish on this pillow. It inflates fast and packs down tiny, and give you a place to lean forward and tuck your arms, blocks out light and relieves back pain.

Trtl, $49.99

The most expensive of the bunch, the Trtl has a loyal following of passionate fans. I know this because whenever I’ve mentioned the words “neck pillow” in real life or on social media, people sing its praises. I ignored their hype for years. Made of a bendable piece of plastic stuffed in a fleece cloth that wraps around your neck, the “pillow” is supposed to look like a discreet scarf but reminded me too much of the boho chic vibe of music-festivalgoers in 2013.

Then I put on a Trtl in the back seat of an hour-long Uber ride to the airport and slept for 55 minutes straight. Then I slept again wearing it on a flight. Best yet: It takes up a fraction of the space in my carry-on compared with the other cushiony options.

In our last pillow test, the Cabeau Evolution Classic neck pillow was the winner. However, I found myself taking the Cushion Lab ergonomic travel pillow , which we also tested, on 90 percent of my trips instead. But the Trtl beats them both. It’s simply the smallest option with the best support, period. And if I’m flying to faraway continents, I may throw in a smaller Sunany dupe as well.
