Bahrainis Can Now Visit the UK Without a Visa

Wed, 11 May 2022

Bahrainis Can Now Visit the UK Without a Visa

From the June 1st Saudi Arabia and Bahrain will join other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states with Electronic Visa Waiver status, the Home Office has announced. The move will maintain security and effective border processes ensuring necessary security checks are carried out ahead of travel whilst enabling smoother transit through the UK border for visitors.

An electronic visa waiver allows the holder to travel to the UK without obtaining a visa provided they complete an online waiver for each visit. A small fee will be applied. It is quicker than applying for a visa as there is no need to provide biometric information (photo and fingerprints), attend a visa application centre or hand in your passport in advance of travel.

Eligible individuals can provide notification of travel with an Electronic Visa Waiver up to three months before travel, and as late as 48 hours before travel.

UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel, said:  “This visa waiver for Bahrain and Saudi Arabia will better connect the people of our countries and boost economic prosperity. The electronic visa waiver is a quick, digital alternative to the regular visit visa and ensures all the necessary security checks are carried out in advance of travel. The visa improvements announced today will maintain security for our citizens while making it easier and cheaper for visitors from the Gulf to travel here for leisure and business.”

UK Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, said: “This visa waiver will strengthen our relationships with Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, making it easier for visitors from the Gulf to come to the UK. Our friendships with both countries are of great importance, built on shared priorities such as trade, investment and security.”

Bahrain is welcoming vaccinated travellers from several destinations with no quarantine, and fewer PCR testing requirements once in the kingdom.

Only an hour's flight from the UAE, the country may be a nice choice for anyone wanting a change of scenery without having to travel too far from home.

Open to citizens and residents as well as travellers from the GCC and those who are eligible for a visa on arrival, the kingdom is also part of a vaccine travel corridor with the UAE. This allows vaccinated passengers to travel between the two countries without the need for quarantine in either destination.

If you're considering taking a trip to the tiny Gulf island in the near future, this guide answers any questions you may have, from the precautionary measures that need to be followed, to the restrictions in place once you arrive.

Who can fly to Bahrain?

Travellers flying to Bahrain must complete an online health declaration and download the BeAware Bahrain app. Photo: Four Seasons

Entry to Bahrain is currently open to Bahraini citizens and residents, GCC citizens and passengers eligible to obtain a visa-on-arrival or an eVisa.

Click here to discover which passport holders qualify for visas on arrival.

Entry is suspended for travellers from red list countries, which includes South Africa, Namibia and Nigeria. Only Bahraini citizens and residents can return from these destinations.

Diplomats, military personnel, airline crew and holders of official, service or UN passports can also fly to Bahrain. All arriving passengers must hold a return ticket and sufficient funds to cover their stay in Bahrain.

Do I need to quarantine in Bahrain?

Cityscape of the hotels, skyscrapers and development along the 'Al Corniche' and the 'Diplomatic Area' of Manama in Bahrain illuminated at night.

Travellers who have not been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 will need to quarantine in Bahrain for seven days. This applies to anyone aged 12 years and over and isolation can take place at a private residence, hotel or other places of stay that has been leased or owned by the traveller or a family member.

This also applies to vaccinated travellers who do not have green shield in the BeAware App.

Citizens and residents of the UAE and other GCC countries who can provide proof that they have received the full course of a Covid-19 vaccine through approved applications do not need to quarantine, but must undergo on-arrival Covid-19 testing procedures in Bahrain.

Passengers travelling from other destinations that have recognised vaccine certificates and who are fully vaccinated or have recovered from Covid-19 do not need to self-isolate, but must also take a PCR test on arrival.

Currently, certificates issued by GCC countries, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Jordan, Seychelles and any country from where travellers are eligible for a visa-on-arrival are recognised, provided that the last dose was administered at least 14 days before departure.

Travellers from destinations with vaccine certificates not recognised by the Bahrain government must follow the rules for non-vaccinated travellers, including quarantining for seven days.

Exempted travellers flying to the kingdom from destinations on Bahrain's red list must quarantine for a period of 10 days in an approved hotel or at home, regardless of vaccination status.

What do I need to do before I fly to Bahrain?

All travellers flying to Bahrain must complete a health declaration form before flying. It can also be filled in via the BeAware Bahrain app before arrival.

Tourists who need an online visa must apply and have their application approved before they can fly to the island.

Negative PCR test results are required for anyone flying to Bahrain, regardless of vaccination status. Tests must be taken a maximum of 72 hours before flight departure times. Children under the age of 6 are exempt from testing requirements. Travellers from specific countries may need to take the test 48 before departure, so check the latest requirements with your airline before you fly.

What rules are in place at the airport?

Covid-19 testing is in place at Bahrain airport for all travellers. The fee for this is 12 Bahraini dinars ($31).

Travellers should self-isolate until they receive the results of their on-arrival test.

Previously, vaccinated arrivals were required to take PCR tests on arrival, followed by more tests on the fifth and 10th days of their stay. This requirement has been dropped.

Arriving passengers who do not have exemption from quarantine rules must remain at home or in government-appointed hotel accommodation for seven days.

Another PCR test will be taken on day seven and a negative result will end this quarantine period. Travellers can pay for the tests before arriving via the BeAware Bahrain app. Cash is also accepted, but this may cause delays.

Bahrain has been on yellow alert status since December. This means that vaccinated and non-vaccinated people can access shops, swimming pools, malls, gyms and restaurants by showing their green shield.

Children under 12 are exempt from these rules.

Hotels are open with social-distancing rules and safety measures in place. In accordance with local health authorities, some restaurant and facility services and hours may also be modified. Face masks are mandatory in all public places.

What do I need to do when flying to the UAE from Bahrain?

Travellers flying from Bahrain to Abu Dhabi who are fully vaccinated no longer need to quarantine when landing in the UAE or in Bahrain. Photo: Abu Dhabi Airports

Departing travellers need to be at Bahrain International Airport at least three hours before their flight to allow for additional screenings. Access to the terminal is limited to passengers and staff only, and temperature screening is mandatory at entry points and before boarding flights.

Bahrain is on Abu Dhabi's green list of destinations from where travellers can fly without the need for quarantine, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated.

Travellers will need to complete ICA approval online to return to Abu Dhabi and all passengers need a negative PCR test to fly back to the UAE. Those staying in Abu Dhabi must follow the most up-to-date PCR testing requirements for the emirate.

The EVW has now been replaced by the ETA , but it is just as easy to get online.

An approved EVW UK was a single entry visa waiver and let you stay in the country for up to 6 months.

The ETA is similar, but permits you multiple stays in the UK of up to 6 months for tourism, visiting family and friends, business, medical treatment, or short-term study . You can also stay up to 3 months on the creative worker visa concession.

Bahrain eVisa Requirements for Citizens of United Kingdom

British nationals visiting Bahrain can take full advantage of the benefits of the electronic visa (eVisa) system and authorize their trip online.

UK passport holders are eligible to apply online for a Bahrain eVisa for British citizens, saving time on personal appointments at an embassy.

The Bahrain eVisa for citizens of the UK is regarded as the quickest and easiest way to obtain a visa to visit the Kingdom of Bahrain for tourism or business.

Applicants must simply meet a few basic Bahrain eVisa requirements for Brits .

Do British Citizens Need a Visa for Bahrain?

Yes, passengers traveling on a UK passport must have a valid Bahrain visa to enter the Kingdom.

The most convenient way to get a Bahrain visa for UK citizens is to apply online for the eVisa .

The Kingdom of Bahrain introduced the eVisa In 2016. It is available to over 120 nationalities, including those from the United Kingdom. The application process is quick and easy and, as it takes place online, it can be done entirely from the comfort of your home.

Types of Bahrain eVisas for British Travelers

According to the visa policy for Bahrain , citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland are eligible to use the simply online system to apply for a few different types of eVisa , depending on their travel needs (purpose of visit, number of entries, length of stay desired).

If Britons only need a single entry into Bahrain, they can choose between the following options:

  • 2-week Visit eVisa
  • 3-month Visit eVisa

On the other hand, if UK nationals require multiple entries , they can choose between the following options:

  • Visit eVisa for multiple stays of up to 1 month each, over a validity period of 90 days
  • GCC Visitor eVisa for multiple stays of up to 1 month

This last option is available for UK citizens who hold legal residence in one of neighboring Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Activities British Visitors can Carry Out with the eVisa in Bahrain

British citizens can apply for the Bahrain eVisa for the following reasons for travel:

  • Business activities

UK nationals must note the eVisa does not allow them to carry out any professional activity (paid or otherwise). If they wish to pursue long-term employment or relocate to Bahrain, they must visit the Bahrain Embassy in London to obtain the relevant visa and permits.

Requirements for British Citizens for the Bahrain eVisa

Before initiating the application process to obtain the eVisa, we recommend reading through the visa requirements for Britons to travel to Bahrain.

The conditions for the Bahrain eVisa are simple to meet and standard for most international destinations. Applicants from the UK must confirm they comply with the following:

  • Have a valid British passport
  • Supply a digital image of the passport’s biographical page
  • Possess a bank card to pay the eVisa processing fee
  • Share proof of onward travel (return or onwards ticket)
  •  Provide an active email address for their eVisa request

The validity of the passport is essential for the eVisa approval. The UK passport must be valid for at least the total length of the visa’s validity and the length of the stay in Bahrain to ensure that the traveler can leave the country on the same passport.

It is advisable to have a passport that will be valid for at least 180 days from the arrival date in Bahrain. If your passport is due to expire sooner, you should renew it before applying for the Bahrain online visa for UK citizens.

For some types of eVisas, Brits must also provide accommodation reservations and proof of sufficient funds to cover their stay (stamped bank statement with a balance of at least BD300).

How to Apply for a Bahrain eVisa as a British National

The application process for the eVisa for Bahrain is available via an online questionnaire that usually takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete. Britons will be required to share the following personal information :

  • Date of birth
  • Country of birth
  • Purpose of visit
  • Email address
  • Telephone number

Applicants will also have to provide the following passport details :

  • Passport number
  • Passport issuing country
  • Passport expiration date

You can continue with the eVisa application by confirming your travel itinerary and uploading your passport’s biographical page . It is essential to ensure that the information you have provided is true and accurate. Any mistake or missing details could result in issues processing the eVisa request.

eVisa for British minors visiting Bahrain

British citizens planning a family holiday must note that any visitor over 7 years of age must reach the country with an approved eVisa.

However, if any traveling party includes children under 7 years of age and who share their passport with one of their parents or legal guardians, then they can be included in a joint application.

How Long Does It Take to Get the Bahrain eVisa from the UK?

British applicants usually receive their Bahrain eVisa within 5-8 business days . It is advisable to apply in good time before the trip to allow for busy periods.

All correspondence regarding the eVisa application, including confirmation of the approved visa, will be delivered to the email address provided by the British traveler.

You should print out a copy of the approved eVisa and keep it next to the travel documents before reaching Bahrain, since it will be required for inspection upon reaching the country.

Traveling to Bahrain with the eVisa from the UK

The easiest way to travel from the UK to Bahrain with the eVisa is by air. All types of eVisa may be used to enter the country at Bahrain International Airport .

All eVisas except GCC eVisas may also be used to enter Bahrain by land via the King Fahd Causeway.

Travelers from the United Kingdom must abide by the terms of their visa , including the date by which they must leave Bahrain. To spend longer in the country, simply leave temporarily, apply for a new eVisa, and then re-enter the Kingdom.

Can UK citizens get visa on arrival in Bahrain?

British travelers who make an impromptu journey to Bahrain and do not have time to apply for the eVisa may instead apply for a visa on arrival.

The Bahrain visa on arrival is not recommended for British nationals who have the opportunity to apply in advance. This is because you have to wait in an extra queue to apply at the border and this means spending a lot of unnecessary time waiting at immigration .

If the visa on arrival application is not approved because of missing paperwork or any other reason, you will not be allowed to enter Bahrain and will have to return home.

If you apply for the eVisa in advance , there is time to sort out any issues with the application and ensure you have an approved visa when you arrive. Brits with eVisas can clear immigration much faster than those applying for a visa on arrival. This is why the online visa is generally the preferred option.

UK rules out EU-wide deal on work and study visas for young people

The European Commission announced its plans on Thursday to begin negotiations within the bloc of approaching the UK for a deal. The EU wants to avoid individual deals being done between its members and the UK.

The government has ruled out striking an EU-wide agreement on allowing an exchange of young people to work and study for extended periods of time.

On Thursday, the European Commission announced its plans to begin negotiating with members of the bloc on a joined-up approach that could be taken with the UK.

But the government today ruled out doing a deal with the bloc en masse - saying it preferred negotiating bespoke deals with individual nations.

The proposals related to a Youth Mobility Scheme, a deal between nations allowing 18 to 30-year-olds the opportunity to work or study for up to four years in each other's territories. It also sets out terms for tuition fees.

In its proposal, the EU made clear it was not looking to give UK citizens free access to the Schengen zone, and instead would restrict them to the countries their visa was issued for.

A government spokesperson said: "We are not introducing an EU-wide Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS). Free movement within the EU was ended and there are no plans to introduce it.

"We have successful schemes with 13 countries, including Australia and New Zealand, and remain open to agreeing them with our international partners, including individual EU member states, where it's in the UK's interest and supports the skills and opportunities of our youth."

YMSs still require someone to apply for a visa, and applicants can be rejected.

On its website, the European Commission explained its reasoning for wanting a joint negotiation.

It said: "Only an EU-level approach will ensure that all member states are treated equally in respect of mobility of young people to the UK. This is one of the key considerations of the 2018 European Council guidelines on relations with the UK.

"Parallel negotiations by member states neither guarantee that the UK would be interested in reaching an agreement with each member state nor would they guarantee that each Member State would be treated equally."

Labour also rules out proposal

Some saw the EU's move as a pitch to Labour, should Sir Keir Starmer win the next general election.

However, the Labour Party was also quick to rule out such a proposal.

A Labour spokesperson said: "This is a proposal from the EU Commission to EU member states, not to the UK. It has come about because the UK government is reportedly approaching other European countries to try to establish mobility arrangements.

"Labour has no plans for a Youth Mobility Scheme. We have already suggested some tangible ways that we would look to improve the relationship and deliver for British businesses and consumers, including seeking a veterinary agreement to tackle trade barriers, mutual recognition of professional qualifications and improved touring opportunities for artists.

"A Labour government would seek to improve the UK's working relationship with the EU within our red lines - no return to the single market, customs union or free movement."

UK introduces Passport Passback visa service in Bahrain

New service lets UK visa applicants keep their passport while their application is processed.

UK introduces Passport Passback visa service in Bahrain

A brand new service, which allows visa applicants to keep their passport while their visa application is considered, has been introduced in Bahrain today. The service, which costs USD 64 / BHD 26 in addition to the visa fee, is ideal for visa applicants who need to travel, or apply for other visas at the same time as applying for their visa to visit the UK.

The service is available to all nationalities applying for a UK visa in Bahrain. It can be used for any type of visa application, including Tier 4 student visas. The service cannot be used together with the priority visa service.

The passport passback service can be selected during the online application process, or on arrival at the visa application centre. Those who choose the service will need to present their passport at their visa appointment, but will only need to hand over copies of the pages of their passport, along with their printed application form and any other supporting documents.

Once the decision on the application has been made, customers will be asked to resubmit their passport so that the UK visa can be placed into the passport. Customers can then either collect the passport shortly afterwards, or choose to have it returned by courier. This part of the process must be completed within four weeks.

In the last year, more than 11,000 visas were issued to Bahraini nationals, mostly for the purposes of holidays and short visits. Last month, average processing times for visa applications from Bahraini nationals were just over 6 days for standard applications, and 4 days for those using the Priority Visa service.

The UK welcomes visitors from Bahrain, and the British Embassy in Manama has launched a social media campaign this week to provide tips and support for visa applicants travelling to the UK during the summer.
