Where to Camp

Where to stay nearby, how to get there, tips for your visit, nagarahole tiger reserve.

Nagarhole National Park and Tiger Reserve (also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park) is a place of unspoiled wilderness, with serene forests, bubbling streams, and tranquil lakes and reservoirs. The park gets its name from the snake-like Kabini River, the largest of the park's waterways, which lies to its south and separates it from Bandipur National Park. ( Nargar means "snake" and hole means "stream" in the native language). This area of India receives torrential rains during the monsoon season, providing a plethora of water resources to the abundant wildlife found in the park, including over 250 types of birds, elephants, sloth bear, bison, tiger, leopards, deer, and wild boar. This park was once an exclusive hunting preserve for the former rulers of Mysore in Karnataka. But today, the tiger population, as well as the park's other predators, are thriving. Book a jeep safari, embark on an elephant ride, check out cascading waterfalls, and visit a sacred temple for a bucket-list experience in Southern India.

Most visitors flock to Nagarhole National Park to check out the predator species and other exotic animals that call this place home. You can go about this in many ways: by booking a mini-bus safari tour and sharing the experience with 26 other people, arranging for a more intimate jeep safari with no more than eight people, hiring a boat or coracle to take you down the river on an unforgettable boat safari tour, or hopping on an elephant for a three-hour park stroll. It's possible to drive along the park's roads by yourself, as well, although you need to remain inside your vehicle, and stopping is not allowed.

You can also hire a guide and embark on one of the numerous walking trails in the park, some that follow the river's bank, putting you up close and personal with the park's wildlife. Don't try to hike by yourself or alone, however, as trained guides can alert you to the presence of dangerous animals and steer you to safety. Camping is not permitted inside the park due to the frequent encounters with tigers and other dangerous predators.

Visitors to Nagarhole National Park can also check out the neighboring Irupu Falls, a cascading waterfall that drops from a height of 170 feet in the dense forests of Western Ghats. You can also visit the town of Kutta. In fact, you might want to stay there, as it provides a central location for accessing the region's sites and immerses you in the authentic rural life in this country.

Some visitors also opt for a trip to neighboring Wayanad National Park, the second-largest wildlife sanctuary in the state of Kerala and home to many species of endangered flora and fauna.

Best Hikes & Trails

Nagarhole National Park is one of the few wild parks in India where you can hike in predator country with a trained guide. The walking paths are suitable for a range of hikers, from avid to novice, and some follow the river, while others take you through forested regions.

  • North Nagarhole Walking Trail : This trekking trail is located in the north section of the park on the banks of the Kabini River. Hiking this trail provides several options to view different species of birds and herds of animals as they congregate at this water source.
  • South-East Nagarhole Walking Trail : This trail is best suited for experienced hikers who don't mind wet and slippery conditions. It meanders through a deciduous forest where the trail sometimes becomes overgrown and not easily navigable. A guide will assure the best route and help lead you away from dangerous animals.
  • Central Nagarhole Walking Trail : This short trail is frequented by tourists and is one of the only trails that doesn't require a guide. It's a great jaunt to go on if you want to see elephants, gaur, and deer.
  • West Nagarhole Walking Trail : Forested valleys, waterfalls, and streams are among the highlights of this trail used for spotting tree-dwelling wildlife. But, stay away from the banks of the river, as crocodiles and snakes may be located underfoot.

In order to venture deep inside the park, you'll need to book a safari. Private jeep safaris were banned in 2011, making the only drivable safari options a minibus or a jeep booked through Jungle Lodges & Resorts (owned by the Karnataka government). You can also book a boat safari through the government-owned lodge. Whatever you choose, make sure to pre-book your trip before your stay to assure your spot.

  • Minibus (Canter) Safaris: These noisy, 26-seater, forest department-operated buses run twice a day: from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the morning, and then again in the afternoon from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The cost to ride one is higher for foreigners than it is for India's natives and tickets can be purchased online or in person at the booking gates 30 minutes prior to departure.
  • Jeep and Boat Safaris : Your hotel stay at Jungle Lodges & Resorts will assure your place on this safari. If you stay at the Kabini River Lodge, the cost is included in the hotel tariff. If you choose to book another lodging option through Jungle Lodges & Resorts, expect to pay an extra safari fee dictated by the category of vehicle you book. The jeep safaris depart from the Kabini River Lodge in the morning at 6:30 a.m. and in the afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Depending on the occupancy of the hotels in the area, there will usually be four to eight people in a jeep. Government-operated boat trips also depart from the Kabini River Lodge at the same time.

While primitive camping is not permitted within the park, you can choose from a few glamping options in Mysore and Kabini. Do note that this style of camping comes complete with resort amenities. Still, you'll be sleeping in a canvas cottage surrounded by the sounds of nature.

  • Kabini River Lodge : The Kabini River Lodge is a Jungle Lodges & Resorts property located on the river in Kabini. It's a popular lodging choice, as they offer packages that include boating, jeep safaris, and elephant rides. Enjoy your stay in one of their tented cottages, complete with two twin beds, a bathroom, a coffee maker, and a wake-up service. (You can also upgrade to a cottage or a hotel room for an additional charge.)
  • Jungle Inn : The Jungle Inn in Mysore offers Swiss tented cottages, complete with en-suite bathrooms, a veranda area, toiletries, and housekeeping (upon request). Packages here include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, a film showing, a campfire, and seasonal hikes.

Nagarhole National Park is surrounded by accommodations, ranging from simple retreats to luxurious stays. Choose from rustic cottages with en-suite bathrooms or villas with private jetted pools and an on-site spa.

  • JLR Kings Sanctuary : Located at the northern edge of the park near Veeranahosahalli, JLR Kings Sanctuary is set among 34 acres of mango orchards and is a good budget option. Safaris are not included in the lodge's packages, but you can book one for an extra charge. For accommodations, choose from a cottage or suite, complete with a private bathroom, refrigerator, coffee maker, and television. There is also an inground pool on site.
  • Evolve Back : The luxury accommodations at Evolve Back in Kabini include your choice of a safari hut, a pool hut, and a pool reserve hut. But don't let the word "hut" mislead you, as these luxury villas all come with private jetted pools, a separate bedroom and living area, and private bathrooms. Choose from three on-site restaurants or a candlelit dinner cruise, and stop into the Ayurvedic spa to freshen up with a treatment post-safari.
  • Kaav Safari Lodge : Enjoy one of the luxury rooms with balconies at the Kaav Safari Lodge in Mysore. You can also choose from a luxury tent, complete with a clawfoot bathtub and office nook. Property amenities include a common-area lounge, a viewing deck, al fresco dining, and a pool. A bonfire barbecue is available on request, as well.

To reach Nagarhole National Park by air, book a flight to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, and then get a connecting flight from Bengaluru to Mysore. Mysore is the closest city to the park (94 kilometers or 58 miles away), where you can book a train directly to the park or make the journey by car. You can also hop on a bus in Mysore. The bus drops you at the HD Kote Bus Station (about 30 km or 18 miles from the park) where you can hire a taxi to take you the rest of the way.

The park has three main entrance gates, which are also the starting point for all safaris: Veeranahosahalli (near Hunsur) is on the northern side, Nanachi (near Kutta) is on the western side, and Antharasanthe (near Kabini) is on the eastern side towards Mysore. It takes about an hour to drive between all three entrances.

  • The roads that run through Nagarhole National Park are open daily from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m., year-round.
  • If you're embarking on a safari, expect to pay a DSLR camera fee with rates indicative of the size of your lens.
  • The park has two separate safari zones: Zone A consists of a woodland area, and Zone B is a riparian zone on the Kabini backwaters. The Jungle Lodges & Resorts jeep safaris can cover only one of the zones at a time, while the Forest Department canter safaris can enter both zones, unrestricted, during one tour.
  • The best time to spot animals is during the summer, in March and April, when the waterholes are dry and the animals congregate near the lake. However, the temperature outside is more pleasant from November through February.
  • During the monsoon season (July through October) safaris may not operate due to muddy, impassable roads, and wildlife sightings are minimal.
  • The Kabini side of the park has the most tourist-friendly entrance and the best (albeit expensive) accommodations and facilities for jeep safaris.
  • Arrive an hour or two in advance in order to get tickets for the canter safaris. Demand can be high, especially on weekends. People start lining up early and seats are limited.
  • The best option for elephant viewing is by booking an afternoon boat ride.

Among India's tiger parks, Nagarhole, in the southern state of Karnataka, is a jewel. Unlike the parks on Central India's beaten track, Nagarhole has a very strict limit on the number of vehicles entering each day, meaning sightings of tigers, leopards and wild dogs are never crowded making it the perfect destination for a photographic safari.

Even more exceptionally, at present Nagarhole is home to India's only regularly-seen black panther (a melanistic leopard). But he is far from Nagarhole's only attraction. This peaceful park is full of chital, with jungle mynas perched on their rumps and antlers. Lustrous Indian giant squirrels chatter in the trees, handsome stripe-necked mongooses trot through the leaf-litter and elephant tuskers stand placidly at the edge of the forest. Tigers, leopards and Asian wild dogs are seen almost daily. In such cat country, sloth bears are less commonly seen but are here nonetheless. Nagarhole is a haven to such a variety and quantity of Indian wildlife, it is an excellent place to add a number of species to your portfolio over the course of this trip whilst also receiving tuition from an award-winning wildlife photographer throughout your stay.

We limit the group size of our Nagarhole departures to just six participants, which is the optimal number to have as it means that everyone is guaranteed a 'window' seat in the vehicle helping to improve the photographic possibilities.

Unlike many safaris, our wildlife photography tour to Nagarhole spends a whole week in one comfortable lodge, with good food, large bird-filled gardens, good vehicles and excellent naturalist guides. In this way we combine twice-daily excursions into the park in search of wildlife and photographic opportunities with plenty of time in between to review images and receive tuition on any subject that may be of interest to you, such as composition, editing or camera settings. All in all, Nagarhole is one of India's undiscovered wildlife treasures and a perfect location for a wildlife photography tour.

In addition to this dedicated photo safari we also have our  Nagarhole’s Tigers, Wild Dogs & Leopards trip  which is perfect for those who would prefer less emphasis on photography.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 : depart uk.

Today, we depart the UK on an overnight flight to Bengaluru.

Day 2 : Arrive Bengaluru & transfer to Nagarhole National Park

From Bengaluru International Airport, we transfer south-west to Nagarhole National Park, travelling by comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. This drive takes five to six hours, so we should arrive in time for a late lunch and, in the afternoon, be able to enjoy our first safari in the national park and our first chance to photograph some of the wildlife before returning at sunset.

Accommodation: Kabini River Lodge , 7-nights

Days 3-8 : Morning & afternoon safaris in Nagarhole National Park for photography

We have six full days to explore Nagarhole National Park and capture images of numerous species that reside in this wildlife haven, typically following a programme of morning and afternoon game drives. Using four-wheel-drive safari vehicles, these drives usually last between three and four hours, allowing us time in the middle of the day to relax back at the lodge, review our imagery and receive photographic tuition from Bret.

Traditionally regarded as nocturnal, in protected areas away from human activity, tigers and leopards can be observed hunting during the day, and are often at their most active in the late afternoon and early morning. It is at this time that we are most likely to experience the drama of hearing the forest come alive with alarm calls and - with luck - encounter one of these magnificent animals and being able to spend time photographing in the golden light of early morning and late afternoon.

With a seven-night stay and up to 14 drives, we inevitably cover the same ground on several occasions. Such repetition only increases our chances of seeing and photographing the tigers, leopards and wild dogs for which the park is rightly famous, and even its gorgeous black panther. In recent years the black panther has been seen on average a couple of times a week, so seeing him will require effort and luck.

Asian elephant, tiger, leopard and Asian wild dog are seen in the park on most days, as are stripe-necked and ruddy mongooses, Indian giant squirrel, sambar and a host of birds. Even if we do not see or photograph the black panther we cannot fail to be enchanted by the landscape and wildlife of this lovely park, or by its calm, unhurried feel. This is one of India's finest - and most unspoiled - parks for watching all wildlife. With our base at a charming lodge, with plenty of time for photography and tuition, we love visiting Nagarhole and enjoying the whole range of spectacular wildlife it has to offer.

Day 9 : Return to Bengaluru

This morning we have one final drive and chance for some photography in the national park, before returning to the lodge for brunch. In the afternoon we drive back to Bengaluru for our final night in southern India.

Accommodation: Taj Yeshwantpur, 1-night

Day 10 : Departure & arrive UK

We transfer to the international airport in Bengaluru in time to check-in for our return international flight back to UK arriving the same day.

  • Duration and price including flights from/to UK : 10 days from £ 5,895 pp

Shaaz Jung’s guide to Kabini

By Arundhati Ail

Guide to Kabini

Spread across just about 650sqkm, Nagarhole National Park was once the hunting spot of the Maharajas of Mysore. The River Kabini winds its way through the southern fringes of the park, separating it from Bandipur National Park on the opposite bank. The wilderness that surrounds the river is commonly simply referred to as Kabini, home for wildlife photographer and safari guide Shaaz Jung. This is where he spent his formative years as a child of wildlife conservationist parents, and this is where he eventually returned in 2008—after studying and working across the world—to set up his own wildlife lodge and spend his time tracking the park’s elusive leopards. This is where he met Scarface , a young male leopard, among the most iconic animals in India’s national parks , whose journey Jung saw almost as his own. This is also where he grieved Scarface’s passing exactly where he had first spotted the leopard years ago. If anyone knows Kabini inside-out, it’s Jung. Here, he draws from his decades-long career as a wildlife photographer and guide to offer insider tips for your next trip to Kabini.

What makes Kabini special?

Cleopatra the leopard

“Very few places offer such an incredible diversity of wildlife within such a small area,” says Jung. “Imagine being able to go on safari and spot the world’s largest Asiatic tuskers , black leopards, tigers, dholes, bears and more. Kabini truly is the real jungle book.” The park is accessible by both land and water, allowing visitors the unique opportunity to spot a wide variety of wildlife and aquatic creatures. “I absolutely love the deciduous jungles of Kabini. They change shape and colour through the seasons and always offer something special. Having documented the resident big cats for over a decade, I have a strong emotional connection with the forest,” he says. “The dense undergrowth and ancient trees gives it an enchanted feel, as if the jungle was guarding many secrets. Secrets that were waiting to be uncovered by those who kept going back in search of more.”

What to spot at Kabini

“The river and its backwaters offer fabulous grazing grounds for large herds of elephants, gaur and other herbivores. These open meadows of fresh feed merge into densely wooded forests that are the perfect abode for large predators. The thick undergrowth allows the tiger to move unnoticed and the tall trees allow the arboreal leopard to laze unharmed. The area is known for its high density in Asiatic wildlife such as tigers , leopards, black leopards, dholes, sloth bears, elephants, gaur and a variety of deer, monkeys and birds. The reservoir offers fabulous viewing for aquatic wildlife such as crocodiles, smooth coated otters, water birds and more,” Jung explains.

He has had a fair few special sightings in the park, including those of Scarface, a beautiful female leopard called Cleopatra and the striking melanistic leopard Saya, who can still be spotted at the park. “It was a guest on safari that saw him, he thought it was a black monkey hanging on a tree. The guide told him there’s no such species in the park, but the guest was adamant—I’m glad he was—so they stopped the car and spotted Saya. Never in the history of Nagarhole had there been a melanistic leopard that had been spotted. He was a young male trying to establish his territory and was difficult to track. I spent about 1.5 years looking for him. In the summer of 2015, I was on safari and he just emerged onto the road. I had never seen a melanistic leopard and you just don’t expect them to be that dark. It was like the earth had been cut out in the shape of a leopard,” Jung says.

He also remembers seeing a tiger chase a leopard up a tree one time. “The tiger went 30ft high and found it very difficult to climb back down, unlike the leopard who jumped onto another tree,” he says. Beyond the big cats, Kabini is also great for birdwatching. Depending on the season, visitors can spot a variety of resident and migratory birds, including herons, storks, ducks, ibis, lapwings, kingfishers, raptors and the beautiful bar-headed geese that migrate here from Russia and Mongolia.

What’s the best time to visit Kabini

Like most national parks in India , the best time to visit Nagarhole and Bandipur is in the winter, between November and early February. The misty mornings and dark winter evenings offer great conditions to spot leopards. However, Jung also recommends visiting in May and June, when the pre-monsoon showers turn the deciduous forest a bright, lush green.

“I always suggest doing as many as you can. A three night stay enables you to go on six safaris, each like a new story waiting to unfold. The jungle is full of beautiful surprises and the more time you spend on safari , the more likely you are to uncover her secrets.”

What are the safari slots?

Nagarhole National Park offers two safari slots: 6-9.30am 3.30-6.30pm

Both timings offer similar opportunities to spot wildlife, including the big cats. If you want to spot elephants and other herbivores, Jung recommends an evening boat safari .

How to book a safari at Nagarhole National Park?

Panther with Bloomy Bokeh

Jung recommends booking certified guides from resorts and lodges at the park rather than booking freelance private guides to maintain safety and ethics on safari . “Safaris in Kabini are operated by two parties. The first party is Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR) which is a public sector undertaking of the Karnataka government and the second party is the Forest Department,” Jung explains. “To book a safari with JLR you must stay at JLR or at any of the private properties that have a licence to operate safaris. The Karnataka Forest Department (KFD) that operates safaris for those who do not want to stay a night. This is a more budget-friendly option and seats can be booked on their official website .”

What are the best zones at Nagarhole National Park?

“Nagarhole has two zones—A and B. Both zones offer equal chances for spotting big cats, primarily leopards as they share the same prey density and microhabitats. Most of the resident big cats in the area roam between both zones.”

Beyond jeep safaris, what else can you do at Kabini?

Image may contain Animal Bird Jay and Bluebird

Visitors can enjoy jeep, canter and motorboat safaris at Nagarhole National Park “The best time for a boat safari is from January to May, when the backwaters recede. Hundreds of elephants congregate on the banks every year, as tigers are often seen lounging in the water and swimming across the channels. The boat is operational through the year but I do not recommend it in the monsoon,” says Jung. “As the Kabini river meanders through Nagarhole and Bandipur Tiger reserves, the boat offers fabulous wildlife viewing on the banks of these forests. Large herds of elephants, gaur, deer and other herbivores gather here for grazing but it is the aquatic wildlife that makes the boat special. Crocodiles, otters and water birds are common sightings.” Beyond safaris, Jung recommends checking with your resort about activities in the area. You can enjoy sundowners by the backwaters, treks to the nearby village, coracle rides, bush dinners and more. Mysore is only an hour’s drive away, so visit the gorgeous Mysore Palace or eat your way through the city .

What are the best hotels to stay at?

The area offers a handful of resorts with official safari licences. Jung owns The Bison Resort (doubles from Rs21,500*; website ) , a boutique tented camp where visitors can enjoy unique experiences like midnight boat rides and accommodations with outdoor showers and backwaters views. Other resorts in the area are The Serai (doubles from Rs18,000*; book here ) —which is located by the backwaters and features spacious rooms with verandahs and Jacuzzis, Water Woods Lodge (doubles from Rs19,000*; book here ) situated on a hillock, Evolve Back Kuruba Safari Lodge (doubles from Rs41,000*; book here ) , Kaav Safari Lodge (doubles from Rs27,967*; book here ) and Kabini River Lodge (doubles from Rs8,776*; book here ) .

Getting there

Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport is about a four-hour drive from Kabini, while Coimbatore airport is a 5.5-hour drive from Kabini.
