Milan & Lake Como - 3 Days/ 2 Nights

Our guide, Ned, was great. The hotel Meininger was clean and comfortable in a college dormitory way, but not very friendly. I asked to reduce the centrally controlled thermostat because I sleep better when it’s cooler, and they said no. The hallways are not air conditioned at all. The rooms get hot during the day and the air conditioning won’t stay on without the key in the slot. I’d rather pay a few dollars more and adjust the temperature to my own needs. The tour has lots of walking but it was enjoyable to see Milan’s highlights. Lake Como was gorgeous scenery, perfect weather, and we had enough time for a nice meal in Bellagio and a drink in Varenna. The train ride back to Milan was standing room only, and hot and stuffy, followed by a long wait in line at the taxi stand. I’d rate the tour guide higher than the accommodations. I suppose that the name of the tour agency (Italy on a Budget) should give a warning that all is not going to be first class.

What travelers say about their trips to Lake Como

Travel tips for lake como trips.

Our trips to Lake Como are designed to include a mix of guided sightseeing and free time so you can see everything on your Lake Como wish list. Here are some can’t-miss things to do on our tours of Lake Como.

  • Take a boat cruise . It’s one of the  can’t-miss excursions on tour in Italy ! Staffer Claudia agrees that it was one of her highlights from her tour of Lake Como. “The best way to experience Lake Como is by boat, and the  Lake Como Cruise excursion  is a must,” she said. “You hop on a small cruise with your group and get to spend the afternoon exploring beautiful lakeside villages like Bellagio, and marveling at some of Italy’s most stunning estates, including George Clooney’s breathtaking Villa Oleandra.”
  • Stroll along the Lake Como Greenway.  If you enjoy taking in striking views while you walk, this nature path is one for the books. Beginning in Colonno, the path takes walkers through a few of Lake Como’s villages, past colorful gardens, and of course, past stunning villas. You won’t want the trail to end!
  • Shop on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi . If you’re looking for a place to shop for authentic, local goods, this road—the main road of Bellagio’s Old Town—is where you’ll want to begin.
  • Take in the views from Punta Spartivento.  If you’re a bit tired after your shopping trip in the Old Town, this viewing point in Bellagio is the perfect place to slow down and take in more beauty. The foot bridge out onto the lake will give you a 360-degree view of the lake’s famous “branches.”
  • Walk along Sentiero del Viandante.  Craving more nature walks? Good, because we have another one for you! This path on the eastern coast of the lake dates back to the Roman period and has some interesting spots for you to stop along the way, including the Castle of Vezio that sits on a hilltop overlooking the lake.

Generally speaking, the best time to visit the Lake Como area is from  April to October , when the weather is warm and mild. But, like  traveling in Italy , the best time to travel on tours to Lake Como depends on factors such as your ideal weather and whether you want to experience any cultural events that take place during certain times of year.

For more tips on choosing the best time of year for travel to Lake Como, check out our  Ultimate Lake Como Travel Guide .

Dozens of spectacular sights await travelers on Lake Como tours. Here are a few you can see while traveling on our Lake Como guided tours.

  • Bellagio.  We visit the charming hilltop town of Bellagio on our tour of  Lake Como, the Italian Riviera & Venice  for a reason! Bellagio is right on the tip of land where the two “branches” of the lake come together and has earned its title as the Pearl of Lake Como. It’s famous for its villas along the water, narrow cobblestone pathways, and boutiques selling local food, perfumes, leather goods, and keepsakes.
  • Villa Carlotta.  Located in the town of Tremezzina, right across the lake from Bellagio, this impressive 17-acre property features ornate gardens, an on-site museum, and sweeping views of Lake Como.
  • The Como-Brunate Funicular.  Want to keep soaking in gorgeous views of the lake? Look no further than the funicular railway that connects the city of Como with the village of Brunate. It made its first journey in 1894; today it runs dozens of times daily for tourists and locals alike.
  • Forte di Fuentes.  If you’re a history buff, these hilltop ruins—among the few remains of Spanish domination in this area—are a must-see.
  • Villa del Balbianello.  Consisting of two residential buildings, a church, a terrace, and elaborate gardens, this spot has made cameos in many famous films. Head inside during your free time while on tour in Lake Como and you’ll be surrounded by sculptures, artifacts, and glass paintings.

Lake Como tours can include everything from casual strolls through charming towns to cruises to meals at elegant restaurants. You’ll be ready with these essentials in your suitcase.

  • A bathing suit.  Travelers on summertime Lake Como tours won’t want to miss taking a dip in the lake’s cool waters.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.  The Lake Como area is laced with scenic walking paths, and sensible shoes will make exploring all the more enjoyable.
  • Light layers.  On our tours of Lake Como you can experience a variety of temperatures and weather conditions, from bright sun to light rain to wind. You’ll be ready for anything with a light jacket or wrap in tow.
  • Sunscreen.  The sun can be strong in Italy, so bring a hat, sunglasses, a light wrap, and sunscreen.

Italy serves up some of the best food in the world, and our Lake Como tour packages include opportunities to sample Italian classics and regional, Lombardian specialties alike. Here are several to try while traveling on our Lake Como trips.

  • Polenta.  This dish originated in Lombardy (the region of Italy where Lake Como is located) and is a must-try. Polenta is boiled cornmeal that can be served hot and creamy, or as a loaf once it has had time to solidify. It has a mild flavor, so is often topped with delicious cheese, cooked vegetables, and sauces.
  • Risotto alla Milanesa.  This simple yet sophisticated dish gets its bold yellow color from the addition of saffron.
  • Tortelli di zucca.  This pumpkin-stuffed pasta dish is available year-round in the Lombardy region of Italy. Made with fresh pumpkin puree, a blend of spices, Parmesan, crushed amaretti biscuits, and candied fruits, this delicate balance of sweet and savory is what makes the dish unique.
  • Torrone.  You will find that nougat is a popular dessert or snack in many European countries. The Lombardy region is known for its “Torrone di Cremona.” There’s even a celebration in Cremona in honor of this sweet treat made with honey, almonds, and vanilla.
  • Panettone.  Filled with candied fruit, almonds, and honey, this festive bread is usually served around Christmastime in Italy. You can find it at European Christmas markets, but be sure you try it while you’re in Lombardy, where it originated.
  • Gelato.  If you ask us, no trip to Italy is complete with a cone or cup teeming with this beloved Italian treat. Staffer Claudia recalls, “When summer starts, there are so many gelaterias to choose from… Don’t forget to add a delicious waffle cookie to the gelato of your choice!”

Wondering what to wash it all down with? Check out our Ultimate Lake Como Travel Guide for tips on what to drink →

One of the best ways to get around Lake Como is by boat. We recommend taking a boat ride (or two!) to take in everything this spectacular region has to offer. Once you’ve docked, the best way to get around the small lakeside towns is on foot.

Day-By-Day Itinerary

Day 1 – lake como, piedmont & portofino tour begins in milan.

Meals included: aperitif and dinner

The tour begins around 12:30 pm when our guide greets guests on a rooftop in Milan city center for a toast with a traditional “ aperitivo ” and some food bites.

We encourage everyone to arrive in Milan the day before. Our Milan Extension includes a hotel room, airport transfer, and a guided tour of the city before meeting with the rest of the group (see below details).

This afternoon we drive in an air-conditioned van to the hotel located in the central area of Lake Como. Check in and enjoy some time off recharging yourself as you admire the calm water of the lake from your balcony. We secured rooms in one of the few hotels built right on the water, leaving behind the noisy roads that flank the lake.

Tonight we toast to our Lake Como, Piedmont & Portofino Tour with a  3-course dinner  in a renowned restaurant in the area, where traditional recipes are re-imagined with a modern twist. Wine included!

Day 2 – Tour of Lake Como: Bellagio and Varenna

Meals included: breakfast

Today’s tour of Lake Como sets off after enjoying breakfast on the edge of the water, on the dining room terrace of our hotel.

Meet at the hotel’s dock the boat captain and our local expert. A  private boat  ride is an affordable luxury treat to take in views from the water of Lake Como, majestic villas, and hamlets surrounded by lush vegetation.

As the local expert shares stories of artists and celebrities who have been calling home Lake Como for centuries, you get to experience what La Dolce Vita is all about.

Our Lake Como, Piedmont & Portofino Tour includes the tour of the perfectly manicured gardens of one of these villas before arriving in the town center of Bellagio .

A slow-paced Tour of Lake Como

Our tour of Lake Como is relaxed, letting guests enjoy the vibe of the place at their own pace. Our guide suggests the best options for an  al-fresco  lunch in Bellagio and things to do, from hiking to shopping in artisan stores specializing in leather, silk, and jewelry.

In the afternoon we cross the lake with our boat up to the town of Varenna  for a picture of its steep flights of steps descending from the upper piazza where we may grab a gelato .

Back at the hotel, enjoy a free evening. For dinner, our guide can recommend different dining options and book a table on your behalf.

Day 3 – A Day on Lake Como at your own pace

Meals included: breakfast, dinner

Today you can experience Lake Como at your own pace. Maybe you simply prefer to have a late breakfast and stroll around your hotel, enjoying people-watching.

Maybe you want to follow our guide on a hiking trail overlooking the lake or hire a private driver for a day trip to the city of Como where elegant shopping and cozy lunch options await.

A more packed option is the full-day trip to Switzerland, all the way to St. Moritz. We encourage guests to inquire at the time of booking so that it can be considered by all group members who can benefit from splitting the cost of driving about two hours to get there. You can stretch your legs along pristine alpine lakes and get lunch in St. Moritz before riding the Bernina Express , one of the most scenic train rides in the world flanking glaciers!

Our guide is there to assist you.

In any case, tonight we can admire the lake from a higher perspective as we partake in a dinner in a traditional restaurant located on the slopes of the mountain overlooking Lake Como.

View of Lake Como in Northwest Italy

Day 4 – Northwest Italy Tour: The Cheese Refiner in Piedmont

Meals included: breakfast, light lunch, dinner

This morning say goodbye to Lake Como as we drive through the plains of the Po River valley and arrive in the wine region of Piedmont. Our first stop is on the Monferrato Hills, in the countryside near  Asti .

Our tour of Northwest Italy takes you to visit the aging cellar of a cheese refiner , an offbeat experience in the heart of Piedmont.

Follow this passionate artisan for a narration of this rare craft focused on elevating the flavor and texture of cheese. This is not an ordinary dairy farm tour but a fascinating art brought from France. Learn more about the cheese refiner and his craft on our blog.

Partake in a guided tasting of 12 types of cheese paired with jams, honey, wine, and a hot plate.

Lake Como, Piedmont, Portofino Tour gets to the Wine Region

This afternoon check in at the next luxury boutique hotel set on the hills of Piedmont’s wine region, where idyllic vineyards are dotted with farmhouses and hilltop villages. Take a break by the hotel’s pool or hike in the countryside before heading out again for a special treat.

Tonight a short drive gets us to a memorable fine dining experience for a dive into one of the most appreciated regional cuisines of Italy. A full-tasting menu is included in a renowned Michelin-star restaurant in the Langhe Hills, with a sequence of traditional courses wisely prepared and unexpected food pairings that will stimulate your senses.

group tour lake como

Day 5 – Tour of The Barolo Wine Region

We explore in a comfortable van the most scenic wine routes of the Langhe Hills. This is where Nebbiolo grapes are grown to be aged in oak and become  Barolo wine .

Our Lake Como, Piedmont & Portofino Tour today takes you to see this unique landscape of hilltop villages and castles nestled amongst vineyards, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We visit a boutique wine cellar for a premium tasting of Nebbiolo and Barolo wines coming from different vineyards with contrasting soil facts.

From Lake Como to Portofino: a day in Piedmont’s Wine Region

On our 9-day tour from Lake Como to Portofino, guests spend three days on the hills of Piedmont’s wine region. Today is all about wine tastings and our guide is on hand for lunch suggestions in one of the villages of the  Langhe Hills .

Get a closer look at one of the most scenic landscapes of Italy and decide to join an optional stroll through the vineyards.

In the afternoon we meet another winemaker set in the Barbaresco territory for a deeper understanding of the different shades that Nebbiolo grapes can get depending on the hillside where they are grown.

Back at the hotel, dinner is on your own.

Day 6 – Truffle Hunting and Cooking Class in Alba

Meals included: breakfast and dinner

After a delicious breakfast with local specialties and the best Italian cappuccino, Lake Como, Piedmont & Portofino Tour continues to the woods of the Langhe Hills, in southern Piedmont.

We meet a personable truffle hunter and a friendly dog for a lecture on how to unearth  truffles  from the rich soil of Piedmont. As we walk in the woods the secrets of this wise and ancient activity are unraveled and depending on the season, summer black or white truffles may be found, however the activity is not staged.

Cooking Class in Alba, a Foodies’ Heaven

Next stop is the charming town of Alba which boasts medieval towers, an imposing Cathedral, and food stores selling truffle products, fancy bakeries, and historic coffee and chocolate cafés.

Enjoy lunch on your own and some free time before regrouping and meeting a friendly local host in her private kitchen.

The full  hands-on cooking class is a complete course centered on several traditional recipes and it provides plenty of facts and information about local ingredients. The cuisine of Piedmont features a rich array of starters, as known as “ antipasti ”, paper-thin egg pasta used for small ravioli called plin or for “ tajarin ”, succulent beef slowly cooked in wine, and desserts made with hazelnuts and chocolate.

The day ends with dinner where guests can taste the results of their afternoon in the kitchen.

Day 7 – Small Group Tour to the Italian Riviera

Meals included: breakfast and light lunch

Our small group tour to Northwest Italy today arrives at the Italian Riviera.

After a scenic drive from the hills of Piedmont to the Liguria region, crossing the Apennine mountains, the bright colors of the  Mediterranean  will unfold in front of everyone’s eyes.

Late in the morning, we descend on foot from the main road to the sea level in Camogli, a picturesque former fishermen’s village preserving its original houses. We arranged a short but tasteful food crawl, hopping in some of the best local bakeries for a tasting of the most famous  focaccia  of Italy: the one stuffed with cheese and the one with caramelized onions, together with other specialties.

Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino’s bay, a gem of the Italian Riviera

We continue to Santa Margherita Ligure, a popular beach resort with a long waterfront promenade and luxury hotels.

In  Portofino , we take some pictures of the famous bay where luxury yachts are anchored and we burn off some calories by walking to the lighthouse. Some climbing of steps is required but paid off by spectacular views over peaceful olive orchards, blooms, and the rocky coastline.

Check in and relax in a sea-view room that you can call home for the next two nights. Our guide can recommend the best seafood restaurants in town.

Day 8 – A Day Trip to Cinque Terre

The last day of our small-group tour in Northwest Italy is all about Cinque Terre.

Our guide will take care of all the logistic details to visit these villages which can only be reached by train or boat, subject to sea conditions.  We visit  Monterosso  and  Vernazza  and, time permitting,  Manarola .

Let’s get an insider look at the National Park of Cinque Terre with its citrus orchards and terraced vineyards overlooking the Mediterranean.

Back at our hotel, we celebrate the end of this Lake Como, Piedmont & Portofino Tour with a farewell dinner in a traditional restaurant and we toast until we meet again!

Meet Piemonte Tour Operator partners with Global Rescue to offer the world’s leading travel protection services. Medical and security emergencies happen. When they do, we rely on Global Rescue to provide our clients with medical, security, travel risk and crisis response services. Without a membership, an emergency evacuation could cost over $100,000. More than one million members trust Global Rescue to get them home safely when the unexpected happens. We highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue.

Mobility & Things To Know

  • To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances. This is not a physically demanding tour, however, there will be a lot of walking, often on uneven steps, cobblestones, uphill and downhill.  One of the charming aspects of Italy is its historical and architectural conformation. Many towns and attractions can only be visited on foot, as vans and buses cannot access the pedestrian areas where most places of interest are located.
  • Unfortunately we cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Our tour managers and tour guides are unable to provide ongoing individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other physical needs.
  • While the driving time on our tours is limited, getting to remote farmhouses and villages may require driving on windy roads that may cause motion sickness.
  • Due to the historic nature of many of the luxury boutique hotels where we stay, some rooms may include stairs and differ in size and layout.

A complete list of things to know about Italy, such as what to pack, money, electricity, health, tipping, VAT refund, and more, will be sent after the completion of the first down payment.

FERRY & BOAT TOURS around Lake Como

Ferry and boat tours on Lake Como are something that I’d definitely recommend to anyone who wants to experience their holidays at its best.

Whether you are visiting Lake Como for a day or staying longer , jump aboard a boat, relax and reach your favourite destination: Bellagio ,  Varenna ,  Como , or maybe one of the  historical villas  on the shores of the lake.

Lake Como ferry & boat tours

The local public navigation service (Navigazione Laghi) provides several routes that connect all of the most popular towns along Lake Como’s shores, at a convenient price .

Private boat tours on Lake Como

PUBLIC BOAT TOURS around Lake Como

The public boat service is provided by  Navigazione Laghi . The service operates all year round (with the exception of the southeastern branch, where it only operates in the summer), although in the low season it has a reduced frequency of service .

Below I collected the most useful information that will help you organize your transfers, but if you don’t find what you are looking for, or if you have specific questions, please contact Navigazione Laghi directly .

About the routes

There are three main routes:

Como - Colico (and back)

This passenger-only route connects the city of Como , on the southwestern tip of the lake, to Colico , on the northern tip, with intermediate stops that vary depending on the route .

The Como-Colico ferry line offers two different types of service:

  • Regular service ( Corse battello in the map). This is the slowest service, stopping at most towns along the route (which vary by ride) and is perfect for those who want to enjoy the ride and take lots of pictures . In winter, this service is more limited than in summer, in favor of the express service.
  • Express service ( Corse rapide ). This service has fewer stops, which vary depending on the ride. It costs a little more than the regular service, but is perfect for those with limited time .

Ferries operating only in the central area of Lake Como

There are two different types of services in this area as well:

  • Ferries that allow the transport of vehicles ( Corse traghetto in the map) only operate between the towns of Bellagio , Varenna , Menaggio , and Cadenabbia . In the Navigazione Laghi search form , these piers are characterized by the word "Traghetto".
  • Due to the high influx of tourists, this area also has several passenger-only shuttle services connecting towns in the central area. Since stops may vary by shuttle type, always use the search form on the Navigazione Laghi website to get the most up-to-date schedules.

Lecco - Bellagio (and back)

This passenger-only route connects Lecco , on the southeastern tip of the lake, to Bellagio, on the promontory between the three branches of the lake. It only operates in the summer .

Schedule & timetables

Below you can find the PDF timetables currently provided by Navigazione Laghi.

However, these documents are not easily readable, so I invite you to use the timetable search form on the company's website for the most up-to-date schedules (I recommend that you always check the box "INCLUDE FAST SERVICE" to get the broadest possible overview of available rides).

  • Como - Colico - Como

Ferries operating only in the central part of Lake Como

Ferries that allow car transportation

  • On weekdays
  • On holidays

Mid-lake shuttles

  • Mid-lake shuttle
  • Lecco - Bellagio - Lecco

Tickets & fares

Remember to buy your ticket before getting on board!

Fares of Lake Como’s public boat tours

You can buy different types of tickets, the rates of which vary depending on several factors: distance between the point of departure and the point of arrival, presence of intermediate stops, surcharges for fast service , etc.

The best thing you can do to know the exact price of your trip is to visit the website of the company and use their search form . However, below is an overview of what you can get.

Types of tickets

  • One-way and round-trip tickets : buy this ticket if you want to travel (and travel back) to a specific destination, without intermediate stops (you can sail from Como to Bellagio but without getting off at Argegno for a coffee).
  • Free-circulation tickets : holders of these tickets are entitled to make intermediate stops between the piers for which the ticket was issued (if you want to visit multiple destinations by lake in a single day, this is probably the best choice). If available, this type of pass can be valid for one day or six days , depending on your travel needs.

Fares for most common routes

  • One-way ticket Como-Bellagio : €10.40
  • Free-circulation ticket Como-Bellagio (valid 1 day): €23.30
  • One-way ticket Bellagio-Varenna : €4.60 (this price applies to all one-way passenger transfers between towns in the central area of the lake)

Surcharge for express service varies by route (see on the company's website).

Where to buy tickets

You can currently purchase tickets online   (on Navigazione Laghi's website ) for regular service trips only (which means: no vehicle transportation, no express service) for the following trip types:

  • one-way/return trips
  • free-circulation tickets (trips with intermediate stops)

Otherwise, tickets can be purchased at the ticket office near the dock  of almost any town ( onboard purchase – with cash/credit card and without any additional cost – is allowed in case of towns with no ticket office). People with disabilities can always buy the ticket on board without extra charge.

Keep in mind that during the peak season the turnout at ticket offices can be very high. If you can, buy your ticket online to avoid standing in line under the sun.

My daughter and I will be spending 8 to 10 days exploring Lake Como and its many villages. 1) Is there a multi-day ferry pass available or must we purchase daily pass? 2) which mid-lake city is most reasonable to make it our home base?

Hi Carolyn, you can buy a 6-day pass. Find more information about the fares in the second table that you can find here . All mid-lake towns have their own charm, maybe I would suggest you to choose one of the less crowded (such as Cadenabbia or Lenno), then consider that you can reach all others by ferry in a matter of minutes. Hope this helps!

Ditto compliments for the concise and organized info on this website.

Thank you very much Laura!

Thank you so much for putting together this information – it’s very clear and concise and I can’t wait to visit Lake Como! All the best

Thank you Chris, I really appreciate it 🙂

Hi Alessandro – Thank you for this wonderful information! I’m staying near Varenna and was thinking about taking our rental car to Villa del Balbianello. Is it possible to take the car across Lake Como from Varenna to the Villa? I saw that there’s a Griante to Varenna ferry, but it looks separate from the Navigazione Laghi ferry service. Where ferry service can I take? Thanks for your help!

Hi Judy, the ferry from Varenna to Cadenabbia is also operated by Navigazione Laghi. So, as you said, if you want to take your own car, the best option is to get to Cadenabbia by ferry and then drive to Via degli Artigiani (8 minute drive), where you will leave your car and then decide whether to walk or take a taxi boat to Villa Balbianello . I hope this helps you!

We want to make a round trip starting from Como (around 10 am), with 2 stops. First one in Varenna than in Bellagio from where we have to return to Como (no later than 21 hrs). Timetables and routes are a little bit complicated to organise easily our trip. Could you give us a hint which would be the best option considering our limited time to visit (about 8 hrs) both towns and a resonable fares for this (either regular or rapid boats)?

Hi Claudio, in my opinion the opposite is preferable, that is: first, take the ferry from Como to Bellagio (about an hour via fast service ferry). From there, take the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna (15 minutes, max 30). Once you’ve visited Varenna, you can take the fast service from Varenna to Como (not too late-I think the last one of the day is around 7 p.m.). I know it is difficult to read their timetables, which is why I suggest you use the search form directly.

On the website, there are two options to select – eg. Varenna or Varenna (Traghetto). The first one I believe is the mid lake shuttle and the first service from Varenna is 9:23, while the second one is the car ferry and has earlier services. If I buy a one way ticket or a free circulation ticket, can I take any of these services or do I have to stick to only the one I buy a ticket for? Is the free circulation ticket only for the mid lake shuttle? Is there a different dock for the shuttle and the ferry at Varenna and Bellagio? Thank you!

Hi Claudine, useful questions for other readers as well. You don’t have to worry: if you buy the free circulation ticket you can take any kind of ferry you want, as long as you move within the validity area of the ticket you chose to buy. The piers may be different (for example, in Bellagio there is one where you take the regular ferry and another where you have to board if you have a car – or even if you don’t have it), but in any case it is best to ask the shore staff to make sure you take the right boat 😀 Best!

Dear Alessandro, group of six adults would like to take high speed ferry from Como to Bellagio, spend a couple of hours, take ferry to Varenna, spend a couple of hours and then back to Como. What is the best option knowing we only have one day. Thank you for your help. Linda Gartner

Hi Linda, I think the trip you have already planned is perfect 🙂 Just be sure to check the ferry schedules to plan your travel as smoothly as possible.

Hello Alessandro, thank you for putting these clear instructions for the public!! I have a question, If i want to take a ferry from Como and want to visit Bellagio, Varenna and Mennagiothe same day but with 2 hours in between every town. Do we have to pay for 1 ticket or is it 3 tickets. I cannot find a clear answer online.

Also do you think the ferry will be full next week or quiet calm? We just want to buy the ticket at the ferry station.

Thank you very much,

greetings from belgium

Good morning Salma, thank you so much for your feedback! You can buy the Como-Menaggio free-circulation ticket which covers all trips included within that area. At this time, the boats are certainly quieter than in the high season. But the thing that worries me is that with the current winter schedule you will hardly be able to visit all these towns in one day, taking even two-hour breaks. I think it’s better to split the visits into two days!

Hello Alessandro thank you very much for your quick reply! I will take your advice and split the visits in 2 days!! Have a great day!

Hello, I am planning a trip in the summer with my family, and we will be staying in Tremezzo. What is the best way to get to Lierno? It looks like the Corse Batello has a route that would take us there, but I wasn’t able to find any tickets on the timetable search table. Thank you for your help!

Hello Kirstin, the best way to reach Lierna from Tremezzo is to get to Varenna by boat and, from there, take the train that will take you to Lierna. I hope I have been of some help to you!

' src=

hello, we are planning to visit Como in August we want to visit Bellagio and Varenna by boat in a day. Which kind of tickets to get ? My husband is disabled and I am his companion. Is there a discount on tickets for disabled people

Hello Tsonka, you can buy a regular round trip in order to take the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna and back. Regarding your other question, I suggest you read the “ Information for people with disabilities ” that you can find on the company’s website.

' src=

Ciao Alessandro, we are arriving in Como by train on 25May23. Two questions please: 1) We are staying in Griante. That is the Tremezzo boat stop, yes? 2) Roughly how often do boats leave from Como? Our hotel tells us there aren’t many boats but we read online that there will be lots of them. We would prefer the slow boat but the hydrofoils would be ok too. Grazie!

Hi John, Griante is a hamlet of Cadenabbia, where the pier from which car ferries also depart is located. But yes, there is also the pier in Tremezzo a short distance away. What they told you is correct, there are not very many boats, even in the high season. Basically, while waiting for the new schedules to come out, consider one or maximum two rides per hour.

' src=

Hello Alessandro! Thank you for all the super useful info on your website! I went the official Navigazione Laghi site and I’m unable to find the sale of Free-circulation ticket/Day Pass anywhere. I looked through the internet but also could not find any info on how to obtain it. Any idea where I can get it? Or is it possible to buy the free-circulation ticket on the day itself at the ferry offices?

Good morning Matthew, you will be able to purchase it directly at the ticket offices located next to the piers, or even online the moment the new schedules come out. Sorry for the inconvenience, unfortunately the company’s website is not the most usable 😀

' src=

Hi Alessandro, thank you very much for your information. I am planning to visit Lake Como next month, and will be staying at Como. I am planning to spend 1 day travelling to Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio from Como. Based on the information above, it seems like the best ticket is a free-circulation 1 day pass from Como to Varenna. This will allow me to stop at Bellagio and Menaggio (along the Como-Varenna course), and head back from Varenna to Como without having to pay any extra fee. Is my understanding of this correct? Thank you very much once again for your help!

Hello Marco, yes, what you say is theoretically correct. But I honestly wouldn’t advise you to visit all these destinations in one day: the distances are greater than you might think, the boat rides are not that frequent, and then I would recommend devoting at least a couple of hours to each town. I’m afraid you’ll have to extend your trip or remove a town from the itinerary!

' src=

Hello Alesandro!! We ‘re going to visit Lake Como at the end of September. We have booked an apartment in Bellagio. We noticed that ferries are frequent from Bellagio to Varenna and Menaggio, but there are only 3 per day to other places such as Nesso and Lenno? We want to visit Nesso and Lenno, which is the best way to visit these places?

Hello Evangelia, you can always take the bus. For example, from Bellagio you can take the c30 that takes you to Nesso in about 25-30 minutes, whereas to reach Lenno you can take the ferry to one of the more connected villages on the other side (e.g., Cadenabbia), and from there take the C10 that takes you to Lenno.

' src=

Hi Alessandro, your responses have been very helpful. I have some specific queries below. 1. Are fast ferry tickets available only at the actual office, not online ? If yes , then not sure why “INCLUDE FAST SERVICE” option is present on the Navigazione Laghi website. When I try to search fast service tickets online, I see following error: “You have included the express service or selected accompanying vehicle: you can purchase these services EXCLUSIVELY at the ground ticket offices.” 2. How many hours minimum should we budget for if we want to travel from “Como” via ferry and we want to cover Bellagio and Varena (couple of hours at each of those locations , and come back. 3. We will be travelling from Milan with 3 suitcases to Giovanni S Como station. Is there luggage storage available at the station ? We want to take a train to Lugano from that station in evening.

Hi Umesh, so sorry for the delay but I had missed your comment! Anyway I confirm that currently fast service tickets can only be done at ground ticket offices. Online you can only check for the actual ride. I know, it’s all a bit strange…. Anyway, if you want to easily visit both Bellagio and Varenna from Como, I recommend budgeting for a full day (say from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Here you can find some luggage storage facilities available in the city of Como. Hope this helps!

' src=

Hi Alessandro, is it possible to start from Varenna, stop in Nesso and then continue on to Bellagio with a one day free circulation ticket? Would the purchase be from Varenna to Careno? I didn’t see an option for Nesso when purchasing tickets and was assuming a stop would be in Nesso.

Hi Michele, yes, it is possible to do what you said, but you have to plan your trip carefully, because the rides are generally not that frequent. I’ve just checked on Navigazione Laghi website and it looks like you can’t buy the free circulation ticket that covers the Varenna – Nesso area… one of Lake Como’s mysteries! So in this case I recommend you buy separate individual tickets, you can easily do this online so you will avoid standing in line. Hope this helps!

' src=

Hi Alessandro, thank you for putting together all of this helpful information! My family and I are looking to travel from Como to Bellagio but we would also like to make stops in Varenna and Menaggio, before returning to Como. It seems like the free circulation ticket might be the best ticket option for us but I want to be sure that I am selecting the correct location to be able to see all these towns. Does it make the most sense to book the ticket from Como to Menaggio and that way we can still use the Ferry for Bellagio and Varenna? Or what would you suggest? Thank you!

Hi Taylor, I’m afraid visiting 3 towns in one day is a bit much. I would advise you to choose only 2 towns from Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna or, if you don’t want to give up, make sure you plan your travels well, leave early in the morning and travel at a good pace. That said, you can certainly buy the Como-Menaggio free circulation day pass and move freely in this area (as the name of the pass suggests :D). Keep in mind, however, that if you want to return to Como using the fast boat service, you will have to go to the Menaggio ticket office to purchase the appropriate supplement (as it is not purchasable online). Hope this helps!

' src=

Hi there! Trying to purchase tickets online but am unsure which option to choose. I’m staying in Varenna in late August and am trying to get to Lenno (to visit Villa del Balbianello) and visit Bellagio and maybe Mennagio all in a day. I know the start point would obviously be Varenna, but what would the end point be for the ticket. If I enter Varenna and Lenno and purchase the day pass would i be able to visit Bellagio and Menaggio or how does that work. Or which option do I do if I only want to go to/from Lenno and Bellagio from Varenna. Thanks in advance for your help and have a lovely rest of your day!

Hi Araceli, since all of the destinations you mentioned are in the central area of the lake, you can purchase a “Free circulation ticket” that has Varenna as its starting point and any of the above towns as its destination. As you can see from – sorry – this very complicated table , the type of route connecting Varenna to Lenno / Bellagio / Menaggio is always marked with the number 3. So, a Free circulation ticket will cost you €15 for the whole day (valid only for regular service, not rapid service). Hope this helps!

' src=

Hi Alessandro, If I travel from Como city to Bellagio, to Varenna and back to Como city in a day, how many ferry tickets do I have to buy? Thank you

Hi Wendy, the best thing to do in my opinion is to buy online a “Free circulation ticket” which covers the Como-Varenna area and costs €25.80 for the whole day. Remember though that with this ticket you cannot take the express service. If you want to use an express service for one of the rides you want to take, you will have to buy the corresponding supplement at the ground ticket offices.

' src=

Hi. Thank you for the above informative write up and useful replies. We are staying at Como and will be covering Bellagio and Verenna in 1 day by ferry. It appears the best option is to buy a day pass cono- varenna. Please correct me if I am wrong. 1 person travelling with me is above 65 years old. Is there a senior fare and can that be bought online?we are travelling late oct. Many thanks for your advice.

Hi, yes, you can purchase the day pass that covers the entire area. The drawback is that, online, you can only purchase this type of pass if, for the travel times you are interested in, there is actually a regular run that connects both destinations (either directly or with a stopover). If this type of ride does not exist, but the return from Varenna is only available through the express service, you do not have the option of purchasing the day-pass online – you can do this at the ticket office, but if the only service that will take you back to Como is the express ride, then when you are in Varenna you will still have to stand in line to buy the supplement. I’m sorry, I know it’s a mess, but that’s how Lake Como ferry service is currently run 🥲 For any other information, please contact the company’s website directly.

' src=

Hi Alessandro, thank you for gathering all the information! We’re planning stay in Como for 3 days and are planning on taking the ferry on the second day. I was wondering if it’s possible to purchase the free-circulation tickets in advance at the ticket office on our first day at Como. And do you know what time the ticket office opens and closes? Thank you!

Hi Rose, yes I suggest you buy it in advance (preferably around late afternoon when the queues for purchasing tickets are shorter). I honestly don’t know the opening hours but I don’t think they close much past 7 pm.

' src=

Hello ! I come to Lake Como in early September, and i’d like to walk the Greenway del Lago, from Colonno to Cadenabbia. My Bnb is located in Varenna. What would you recommend ? As i don’t see how to go with the ferry from Varenna to Colonno in the morning and then back to Varenna from Cadenabbia in the afternoon. Thank you for the help !

Hi, you can do it the other way around. Take the ferry from Varenna to Cadenabbia, and from there proceed south. At the end of your walk, once you get to Colonno, you can go back north on the C10 bus and, again, take the ferry from Cadenabbia to Varenna.

' src=

Hi – Can you take the Traghetto ferry even if you do not have a car? If yes, how easy is the walk between the Bellagio passenger ferry terminal and the Bellagio Treghetto terminal? Will be arriving on a passenger ferry at 17:57 at the Bellagio passenger ferry and hoping to catch the 18:15 Bellagio Traghetto ferry to Varenna. Assuming I purchase the Traghetto ticket in advance, is this possible? I know the transfer will be tight but trying to determine if it is possible. Many thanks in advance!

Hi Diane, yes, you can take the vehicle ferry even without a vehicle. The distance between the two different terminals in Bellagio is a 5-minute walk, so I’d say you’re just in time 🙂

' src=

Hi, I’m getting the train to Varenna, I want to visit Bellagio and Menaggio. Can I get a one day pass to cover these towns and come back to Varenna? Which destination do I put into the ticket to cover all three destinations?

Also if I wanted to visit como as well as Bellagio and menaggio before returning to Varenna is this all included in the one day pass? And what do I put in the destination for the one day pass?

Many thanks, Natasha

Hi Natasha, currently it seems impossible to purchase the day-pass on the Navigazione Laghi website. I recommend that you purchase tickets for each route separately (the service charge for connecting between destinations in the central lake area is always 4.60€ each way). I suggest you buy the tickets a few days in advance as online they sell out very soon (if it happens you can still head to the land-based ticket offices). For any other information, please write directly to the company so that sooner or later they will be able to offer a service that meets expectations 🙂

' src=

Hi Alessandro, We will be traveling from Saronno, is the Como Nord Lago the right station that is a 5 min walk from the ferry pier at Piazza Cavour? We are hoping to get to Bellagio and take in some views, are the hydrofoil boats’ seat inside and what kind of views do they provide? The next day we are traveling from Bellagio to Varenna in the morning, should we buy both tickets together at the Pizza Cavour?

Thank you so much!

Hi Hannah, I confirm that Como Lago station is a few minutes’ walk from Piazza Cavour, in front of which is the boat ticket office. If you are interested in enjoying the beautiful views on the ferry from Como to Bellagio (in this regard, I invite you to see my Reel !) you may be better off using the regular service, as the hydrofoils have mostly indoor seats. The advantage is also that you can buy this kind of ticket online. As for the ferry from Bellagio to Varenna, again you can safely buy your ticket online (but I advise you not to do it at the last minute because tickets can be sold-out). Hope this helps!

' src=

Hi. 1. If I buy an online ticket in advance for the slow ferry, is it like the trains in Italy, where if you miss your booking you can just take the next one ? 2. First week of October, will it be very busy ? Will I be able to just roll up and get a ferry from Varenna to Bellagio around 3.30 pm ? Thanks.

Hi Will, as far as I know it is: the ticket you buy online must be used on the day itself but not necessarily for a ride at a specific time. On this, I suggest you write to the company’s website so they can give you more accurate information. October is one of the best times to visit Lake Como: the area is not congested with tourists, the weather is still good, and transportation services are operating pretty much like in summer, so go easy!

Hi Alessandro, we are traveling from Milan to Bellagio by train spending the night in Bellano. Do you know if there is a luggage storage at the Bellagio ferry port or Bellagio train stop? Is it easy to take a ferry from Bellano to Bellagio and back? Do they run as frequently as from Bellagio to Varenna?

Hi Hannah, take a look at these luggage storage facilities around Lake Como (there is also one in Bellano). Consider that there are not very many boats connecting Bellano to Bellagio. Every day there are about 2 or 3 that go from Bellagio to Bellano and as many that go the other way around. I recommend that you get an idea of how the Lake Como ferry tours work in this current page and for any other information on this you can contact the official company. What I can recommend, as an alternative, is to embark in Varenna (from which departures are more frequent) and which can be reached by train or D21 bus .

' src=

Hi Alessandro, great feedback for everyone – hope you can help us? 5 adults coming from Milan on an early train to Como in June 2024. We will have a one day Free Circulation Pass and hoping to go to Lenno to catch a boat shuttle to see Villa del Balbianello and visit Bellagio and Varenna back to Como to catch train to Milan. Is this doable in one day? What are your suggestions. Will our pass cover those places (excluding shuttle to Villa). Hope that makes sense! Thanks a lot. Kym 🙂

Hi Kym, I think your plan requires more time than just one day. Instead, my advice is to take the train to Varenna, from where you can take the ferry to Bellagio. This would greatly reduce the time and you could also include in your day a visit to Villa Monastero or Villa Melzi ! How about it?

' src=

Hi Alessandro, Travelling to Lake Como for a day and planning to buy Free Circulation tickets for the family so we can start and stop where and when we want. Have 2 children coming that will be under 12 years old, do you know if they are a different price? Also, I have tried to book tickets online, but the schedule only goes up to March 17th, 2024, (which is 2 weeks before we are visiting), and the site will not accept my booking dates… do you know when the new schedule is released during the year? Thanks in advance for your help… awesome website!

Hello Kat, you can find all the information about Lake Como’s ticket fares here (I know it’s very hard to read, I’m sorry :’D). The new schedules will be released 1-2 weeks before the entry into force. Hope this helps!

' src=

Hello:) I am planning a trip to Lake Como during Easter holiday, will the ferry in service between 29th March to 1st April 2024? Thank you!

Hi Kat, certainly. The new ferry schedules will come out a couple of weeks before the new schedules go into effect.

' src=

Hello Alessandro. I appreciate all your information on this site. I can’t seem to find the answer on how much it costs to take a vehicle on a ferry (specifically Bellagio to Varenna). Can you advise? Also, if I have passengers with me and my vehicle, do you just pay for the vehicle or does every passenger have to pay for a ticket as well? Thank you!

Hi Jonathan, here you can find rates for transporting vehicles on Lake Como ferries. There you should find the answers to all your questions 🙂

' src=

Hello Alessandro, I would like to take my car from Cadenabbia to Bellagio and then Bellagio to Varenna on 31 March 2024. Is this possible on the traghetto? At the moment, it says it is not possible on the website… Thank you in advance!

Hi Anne, this is because the Bellagio pier for car boarding is currently undergoing maintenance. But – theoretically – by that time it will be possible again. Contact the company for more accurate information!

' src=

Hello, from what date does the Lecco- Belaggio service begin again? Thank you

Hi Georgia, the ferry schedules for the Lecco-Bellagio route will come out a few weeks before the summer timetable goes into effect, which should start around April.

' src=

Hi, thank you so much for the webside, its so usefull. I would like to ask you about boat timetable from town Lecco, I would like to travel in middle of April form Bergamo to Lecco and than continue by boat, but I couldnt find the timetable.

Hi Alex, the new timetables will be posted shortly before the new schedules go into effect. Contact [email protected] for more information!

' src=

Thank you so much for the helpful information. We are planning a trip to Argegno the last week in May. How well connected is Argegno to places like Bellagio and Varenna? How can we get from Argegno to the Greenway? We won’t have a car. We’re trying to decide between staying in Argegno or Candenabbia.

Hi, Argegno is definitely an important junction and therefore can count on several daily runs, for example going north now I counted about 10. To start the Lake Como Greenway you can take the C10 bus from Argegno and get off immediately afterwards, at Colonno, where the starting point is located.

' src=

Hi Alessandro, thank you for a helpful overview. Do you know the location of where the ferry picks up in Bellagio and Bellano? There are many docking stations on Google Maps. I appreciate your help.

Hi Olivia, Bellagio has two piers. This one allows you to board ferries that also admit vehicles (those that only take you to Menaggio, Cadenabbia and Varenna). This one , on the other hand, is for ferries designed to transport people only. Bellano’s pier can be found here . I hope I have helped you!

' src=

I want to reiterate how helpful this article is and I’m impressed by the answers you’ve provided. We have one full day in Como and you told us exactly what we need to know. Thank you!

' src=

Great web site! Can we purchase free circulation tickets for the high speed ferry at the ticket booth the afternoon before we plan to use them? Purchase on May 3rd for use on May 4th? Thanks for the great information!

Hi Frank, yes, but if you have a chance you can also do it directly online 🙂

Trip Itinerary

Activity Level: Leisurely

Travel to italy, transfer to lake como.

Upon landing in Italy, we will be met by our local representative in the arrivals area of the airport, who will escort us to our hotel in the pretty lakeside town of Tremezzo. As we travel our guide will share some information about the local region, suggest activities for us to enjoy and answer any questions we may have.

Boat Trip on Lake Como & Villa del Balbianello

Explore lake como.

After breakfast, join our guide as we set off by boat to discover the towns and villas dotted along the scenic shoreline of the lake. Included on our excursion today is a visit to Villa del Balbianello, one of the most scenic residences of the region. Here we will explore the magnificent terraced gardens and elegant villa.

We have the afternoon to relax and enjoy Lake Como's charms. Shop, sightsee at your own pace or sit by the lake and take in the incredible views.

Milan & The Duomo

Excursion to milan.

Following breakfast, join our guide and travel by coach to Italy's northern capital and fashion hub; Milan. Our guided tour will provide a fascinating overview of the city, passing the impressive Piazza del Duomo and the world's oldest shopping mall, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (all viewed from outside).

Our excursion today will include a visit to the Duomo which is the third largest cathedral in the world. Construction began in 1386 and it took five centuries to complete.

After our tour join us for a refreshing aperitif followed by  some free time for shopping or visiting some of Milan's numerous museums and art galleries.

Today, we will have a full day to relax and enjoy the charms of Lake Como. Our local guide will be happy to suggest activities to suit your interests and advise which highlights are a must-see. You could stretch your legs and admire the views with a walk on the lakeside promenade or relax at your hotel. The terraced vineyards above Domaso are exposed to the mild and breezy climate from the western shore of Lake Como and produce grapes of outstanding quality and value. Our visit will include a tour with our knowledgeable wine maker followed by savouring some of their wines at a tasting session.

Today we can spend our last free day enjoying the beautiful lakeside setting, shopping for last minute souvenirs or enjoying a coffee, gelato or glass of wine at a local cafe. Upon arrival in Milano MXP Airport, you will travel to Cinque Terre. You will be met by your driver and a tour escort and will be transferred to your hotel in Liguria region (Approximate 3 hours by motorcoach), in northwest Italy. This crescent shaped regions Mediterranean coastline is known as the Italian Riviera. The 5 colorful fishing villages of the Cinque Terre, as well as stylish Portofino, Rapallo and Santa Margherita Ligure, are on the eastern coast or Riviera di Levante. Once in Clinque Terre you will experience a welcome dinner (hotel or restaurant walking distance), and have the rest of your evening at your leisure.

Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore are five small villages surrounded by a unique landscape that UNESCO has named a World Heritage site. These villages contain gorgeous beaches, crystal-clear water, steep trails winding through lush vineyards and olive groves, lemon trees and pine woods. A perfect spot, whether you enjoy swimming, boating, walking through the historic town, or exploring the pristine nature all around you. After breakfast, depart for Cinque Terre and enjoy an unforgettable day dedicated to the discovery of one of the most amazing and enchanting landscape in the World. You will travel though the little villages via boat (weather permitting) and train. The five villages, “Cinque Terre” is an area suspended between sea and land, hanging from sheer cliffs surrounded by hills and vineyards. You will enter a little piece of heaven. This spectacular coastline was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and it is one of the best preserved natural and semi-natural parts of the Mediterranean.

As one of the most popular things to do while in the Italian Riviera, prepare to learn how to make pesto! Discover all the essential products, the Italian origins, and the story of the habitants that create the famous Ligurian sauce. During the pesto-making class discover all the secrets of the authentic recipe by using the original ingredients, a marble mortar & pestle, and your own hands to curate the specialty. At the end, compare the pesto that you made with an industrial one! To enhance the experience you'll also be preparing either fresh pasta or fresh gnocchi in the authentic handmade way. During the cooking lesson will be served a selection of Ligurian wines, including the infamous sweet wine, Sciacchetrà, a typical wine of “5 terre”. This class lasts approximately 2-3 hours, and afterwards you can eat the food of which you prepared during the lesson.

Wake up to breakfast at the hotel and then enjoy a walking tour of Santa Margherita Ligure, and then depart for a short boat ride to Portofino, a picturesque seaside village with brightly colored houses lining the shore. Portofino is also known as the resort of the rich and famous. Designer boutiques and dozens of cafes and restaurants line the main square, giving guests the chance to experience the real Italian “bella vita”. You’ll have free time to visit the main square, the church of San Giorgio, which is said to have relics of St. George, or visit the Brown Castle, built in the 15th century and used for harbor defense over the centuries. You will have some free time to sight see, have some gelato, or just sit and people watch. Later in the afternoon, make your way by boat back to Rapallo where you have the rest of the evening at your leisure.

After breakfast, depart from the Liguria region and make your way towards Lake Como where you spend the rest of the trip. Once you reach Como, enjoy some free time to explore. The city offers many historical and cultural gems, which you can discover by taking a walk in the pedestrian historical center. And be sure to experience the Como Cathedral and the Basilica of St Abbondio, as well as the city's medieval town hall (Broletto).

Enjoy breakfast followed by a full-day of excursion. You will meet your guide and start discovering Lake Como from the waters on a site seeing boat tour, then stop to enjoy the wonderful villages, Bellagio and Tremezzo. During the boat tour, you will be able to admire the villages, the Romanesque churches, the views of the flora, and of course, a long series of villas with their luxuriant gardens from the waters. In Tremezzo, stop to admire Villa Carlotta with its magnificent botanic garden and art masterpieces of over 70,000 square meters of gardens and museum. The beautiful villa, built at the end of XVII century in a natural basin between the lake and the mountains, faces the dolomite Grignas and the peninsula of Bellagio, The Pearl of Lake Como. Few places are as romantic as Lake Como, and even fewer resorts as beautiful as the Bellagio. Called the “Pearl of the Lake”, Bellagio's world class hotels and restaurants provide the perfect place to soak up the lake's famous panoramic views. The village is characterized by century-old buildings, stone lanes and picturesque cobbled stairways filled with shops showcasing the finest Italian wares. Later on in the evening, return to Como and enjoy a farewell dinner.

After breakfast, you will be taken via private transfer to the Milan airport for a return flight to the USA.

Boat Tours of Lake Como FAQ

What are the best places to visit during a boat tour in lake como.

During a boat tour of Lake Como, you’ll get to explore some of the most famous towns and villages such as Bellagio , which is often called the “Pearl of Lake Como,” as well as Varenna, Tremezzo, and Menaggio . Each of these places has its own distinctive charm and personality.

Now if you’re interested in exploring lesser-known areas, I recommend you to take a Private Boat Tour in Lake Como that will allow you to build your own itinerary. You can consider visiting one of the uninhabited places around Lake Como, such as Isola Comacina or taking a stroll down the Adda River which branches off south from Lecco . In these places, there are fewer tourists, giving you a chance to experience the laid-back lifestyle and natural beauty that northern Italy is famous for.

What are the departure towns?

The starting point for your tour or rental will depend on its type. For instance, public transport boats such as the vaporetti and ferries typically have several pick-up points located around the lake’s perimeter (with Bellagio being one of the most popular), while private boat rentals usually depart from either Tremezzo or Menaggio.

Most boating companies will provide full details of where your tour departs from when you book, so be sure to check this before setting off!

How long does a boat trip in Lake Como last?

The duration of your Lake Como boat tour varies based on your chosen tour or rental.

Public transport boats , such as vaporetti, operate at short intervals and have designated stops for village exploration. They follow a set route and usually run every 30 minutes to an hour. These tours are ideal if you want to disembark and explore one of the villages for a few hours before resuming your journey around the lake.

Private boat rentals offer flexibility, typically with half-day (four hours) and full-day (eight hours) options. Dinner tours allow three hours between departure and docking, while traditional sightseeing tours last two to four hours, with longer options for shoreline exploration.

When is the best time to visit Lake Como?

Any time of the year is a good time to go on a Lake Como boat tour. This is the best way to see the most beautiful views and visit the stunning villas around Lake Como. But if you are planning to catch the warm weather, why not, swim in the blue water lake, between March and November is the best time as you will catch the peak of summertime at Lake Como. Just don’t forget to pack your sunblock and swimsuit.

If you are visiting Lake Como during spring and autumn, they are also beautiful seasons to go on a boat tour, and even if the temperatures are cooler, the crowds are also smaller.

Now if you are visiting during wintertime, you will be able to catch the snow-capped mountains in the background, you will just need to wear layers and especially a warm jacket and you will love this charming season at Lake Como!

What to wear in Lake Como?

If you are also visiting during the hot months, think about  light clothes  and  comfortable shoes   to walk and explore during the day. Don’t forget your  sunblock , and  sunglasses  and consider a  hat   too. If you are planning to go on a  boat tour at Lake Como , bring your bathing suit 😉
