Kerala: Beaches & Backwaters Tour

  • In-depth Cultural

Kerala: Beaches & Backwaters

What I was looking for: - do more cultural activities than when travelling solo (I usually do none) - stay with a chill group of people for a week - see Kerala that I heard so much about My experience: - this tour has limited activities. It’s in the itinerary. I booked the only one that matches my dates without checking too much… - the group was pretty cool. The restaurants / bars we were recommended were bad though. - I got to see Kerala. The walk through the rice fields was amazing Overall, I’d say go for it if you’re not comfortable travelling on your own. The 2 days in the backwaters were worth going on a tour. The beach is better done solo travelling / resort / hostel.

Highlights of Southern India - Kerala with Houseboat Stay

KK Holidays organized a tour from Kochin/Kerala/Kochin and as usual they were brilliant. They also arranged for a driver to take us from Chennai to Pondicherry. We have used them before as we know they book the best hotels, use the best and reliable drivers and nothing is too much trouble for them. Again, we were absolutely delighted with them and always recommend them to our friends.

Relaxing kerala tour ( Cochin Munnar Alleppy Cochin)

relaxing Kerala tour with Cochin, Munnar and Alleppy as our destinations. The experience was simply breathtaking. From the moment we arrived in Cochin, we were welcomed with warm hospitality and felt like we were home. The city of Cochin was so beautiful and full of life. We visited the ancient Jewish synagogue, the Dutch palace, the Chinese fishing nets, the St. Francis church and the Bolghatty palace. We then moved on to Munnar, which is situated in the middle of lush green mountains. It was a beautiful sight to behold. We went on a trek through the tea estates, visited the Mattupetty dam and also went on a boat ride in the Periyar river. It was a perfect way to relax and take in the beauty of nature. Our final destination was Alleppy. We spent our time here enjoying the houseboat cruise, which was so peaceful and relaxing. We also visited the backwaters, the Krishnapuram palace and the Ambalapuzha temple. Overall, our relaxing Kerala tour was simply amazing. We had a wonderful time in each of the destinations and experienced the culture and beauty of the region. The hospitality was great throughout our trip and the local food was delicious. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a relaxing and memorable holiday.

Quick Cochin Munnar Thekkady Alleppy Kovalam 8 Days Tour Tour

Quick Cochin Munnar Thekkady Alleppy Kovalam 8 Days Tour

I had took the Quick Cochin Munnar Thekkady Alleppey Kovalam tour and it was a quick but memorable tour of Kerala's best attractions. The tour started in Cochin, where we visited some of the city's famous landmarks such as the Mattancherry Palace, the Jewish Synagogue, and the Chinese Fishing Nets. The guide was knowledgeable and provided interesting insights into the city's rich history and cultural diversity. Next, we traveled to Munnar, which is known for its stunning tea plantations and misty mountains. We visited the Tea Museum, the Echo Point, and the Top Station, among other sites. The guide was very knowledgeable about the region's tea industry and provided interesting insights into the cultivation and processing of tea. We then traveled to Thekkady, which is known for its wildlife sanctuary and spice plantations. We went on a jungle trek and a boat ride in the Periyar National Park, where we saw elephants, bison, and other wildlife. We also visited a spice plantation and learned about the region's spice trade. The tour then took us to Alleppey, where we embarked on a houseboat cruise through the tranquil backwaters of Kerala. The scenery was breathtaking and the experience was truly unforgettable. The tour ended in Kovalam, where we had some free time to relax on the beach and enjoy the local cuisine. The accommodations throughout the tour were comfortable and well-maintained, and the local staff were friendly and hospitable. The transportation was also well-organized and comfortable, with air-conditioned vehicles and punctual drivers. .Overall, I would highly recommend the Quick Cochin Munnar Thekkady Alleppey Kovalam tour to anyone looking for a quick but memorable tour of Kerala's best attractions. The tour provided a perfect blend of culture, nature, and relaxation, and left me with memories .

God's Own Country Kerala

Our tour was almost entirely flawless from start to finish. We did not have to think of any details that often detract from enjoying the trip. It was the most organized yet flexible travel experiences I've had. Our driver Shubam, was a delight to be around. Tour company, guides, driver went above an beyond to make our trip enjoyable and memorable. Kerala is Beautiful and the food was amazing. Kerala Holidays

You could spend a lifetime exploring the nuances that make each place – and each day – distinctly different from the last in India . Each is marked by its own food, festivals and traditions. And there’s an ever-changing landscape too. On Kerala h olidays and the languid south, you’ll find the pace much slower than in the frenetic north. Tranquil rural villages, deserted white-sand beaches and wildlife-rich rainforest make Kerala the perfect haven. Beautiful countryside, rolling plains and lush valleys are home to elephants, monkeys and other flora and fauna.

On Exodus Kerala tours you’ll have the opportunity to stay on a converted rice barge and explore the sleepy backwaters.  The barges are open on both sides, encouraging a natural breeze and allowing stunning views of both banks of the river. Throughout the journey watch local life pass by, and in the evenings visit villages to experience life here more closely.

Travel in style along the Kerala backwaters on a traditional houseboat, meandering through the lush tropical vegetation and past sleepy villages where the pace of life has remained the same for hundreds of years. Fascinating old towns such as Cochin, an intricate mix of religions and delicious food add to this potent brew.

Learn from the vacationers about their vacation experience.

gulf coast tours & travels kochi kerala

I had been to tons of travel guide places and somewhere or other I faced problems. I shared the problems with Somans and with their guidance on when to plan a vacation, how to plan, where to go and what budget will be best everything got covered up. They offered all in one service without any second thought.

gulf coast tours & travels kochi kerala

Summer vacation was always hectic for me due to ticket booking, finding hotels and places to explore. Someone told me about Somans and I planned to give it a shot. After a 20 minute conversation, I was sorted with the tickets booking time, hotel and the places to explore.

James Jacob

" I was very occupied with the daily routine and couldn't plan my trip to Vietnam for the weekend. Thanks to Somans team and the experience they have. All of their guidance and the support made my vacation very memorable. Thanks for the immense and creative support.

gulf coast tours & travels kochi kerala

Traveling is not easy today. This is what I used to think before getting in touch with Somans. I used to watch 100 videos for planning a trip and now with Soman all I had to do was talk to the team. I got in touch with the team for my vacation trip to Kalimpong. They not only guided me to the location but also were there throughout. Highly recommended for the ones who are a bit insecure about traveling with planning.

Vinod Shankar

gulf coast tours & travels kochi kerala

I had 10 days off and needed to plan for exploring India. Somans helped me with the entire planning of this trip. They helped us with the booking options, tourist places, guide to stay, budget planning and travel tickets. For the ones who are looking for immediate help and planning, Somans is the best place.

Abhijith Sukumaran

gulf coast tours & travels kochi kerala

Choosing Somans was the best decision I made for my vacation. Yes, I am giving this review after coming from the vacation. I tried multiple travel companies but not a single one made my trip so customized. All I had to do was share my likes and dislikes, preference with Somans and yes follow them. The trip was fantastic and I could tell that it’s “my trip.”

City praised for its sustainable initiatives and local festivals by the travel magazine

Kerala's Kochi featured in Conde Nast Traveller’s best places to visit in Asia in 2024

Thiruvananthapuram: In a huge lift to Kerala’s resurgent tourism, Kochi has been featured in Conde Nast Traveller’s list of the best places to visit in Asia in 2024.

Heaping praise on Kochi for its sustainable initiatives and local festivals, the London-based luxury travel magazine also mentions the city’s waterways, verdant backwaters, lagoons and rivers, which have attracted visitors for centuries – from Arab, Chinese and European merchants in the 1300s to modern-day travellers.

"As one of the first in the world, its water metro system—a socially inclusive transport option connecting 10 islands along a 78-kilometre network—was already revolutionary when it launched in 2021, but will set the bar even higher by late 2024, when it becomes fully solar powered,” it says, adding that the move is part of a wider effort to transform Kerala’s financial and industrial capital into a solar powerhouse.

The city’s international airport (CIAL) is the first in the world to operate solely on solar energy and was recently upgraded with the introduction of a dedicated business jet terminal that is the largest in India.

"On a wider scale, Kerala Tourism 2.0, the state’s $43 million 2023-2024 sustainable tourism initiative, will focus on improving infrastructure and travel corridors between Kochi and less-visited destinations such as Munnar and Kozhikode—as well as local festivals, from the ancient temple gathering of Thrissur Pooram to the Kochi-Muziris Biennale," according to the magazine.

'Huge accolade for Kerala Tourism'

State Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas said it is a huge accolade for Kerala Tourism which has always strived to strike a judicious balance between the commercial growth of tourism and its sustainability to ensure participation and well-being of local communities.

Tourism Secretary K. Biju said: "Our sustainable initiatives in tourism sector have made not only Kochi but the entire state a welcoming destination for travellers from across the world."

The magazine also refers to improvements that are underway at Kochi’s 150-year-old Ernakulam Market, which is set to unveil its years-in-the-making redesign in early 2024.

Conde Nast also pays tribute to responsible tourism operator The Blue Yonder, which created a twilight dining experience inspired by Kochi’s historic Chinese fishing nets in 2023 in Ezhikkara. The innovative travel company, which offers opportunities to experience conservation-focused mangrove trails and climate-resilient Pokkali rice farms, also revamped 2023-2024 Nila River voyages: two-week odysseys along the state’s cultural lifeline, from the Palakkad gap to Ponnani.

Also featuring in the magazine’s list are Kathmandu Valley (Nepal); Singapore; The Silk Road, Uzbekistan; Kobe, Japan; Bangkok (Chinatown), Thailand; Mongolia; Ras Al Khaimah, the UAE; The Red Sea, Saudi Arabia; Da Nang, Vietnam; and South and Central Sri Lanka.

Kerala: one Indian state, four exhilarating ways

The southwestern region pretty much has it all, from beachfront, to port metropolis, to verdant mountainside

Tea plantations in the surroundings of Munnar, Kerala, India

Kerala is a microcosm of India itself. The 360-mile-long sliver abutting the Arabian Sea is a bewildering jumble of people, places and cultures. Impossible to get a handle on with one lone visit — or six visits even. The startling breadth of Kerala is almost preternatural. Well, better to say it is extra natural, because the mountainous Western Ghats and the topographical marvel of the coastal backwaters are acute embodiments of the natural world. Discover how Kerala does what it does with these four guides to four very different parts of the state.

Do nothing on the coast

coastline at Marari Beach

The sprawling beauty of Marari Beach

Beach nuts and laze-abouts will relish the tranquility of Marari Beach . There is not much there, and that is the entire point. Just stretches of sand and the waves of the Arabian Sea. Fishermen ply their trade on the beach's shore, so the morning rush can be a bit intense. Otherwise, the vibe is permanent-mellow. The aptly named Fisherman Cafe is tucked back off the shoreline and serves seafood with both Keralan influences and European ones. That means you can order a paratha to go with your whole grilled snapper, stuffed with lemon, butter and rosemary, and served with potatoes and zucchini. The stillness can be deceptive. Get friendly with elephants and spices in the mountains

an elephant on the shore at Periyar Reserve in Kerala, India

An elephant sighting at Periyar Tiger Reserve!

Munnar is probably the most well-known of the mountainous destinations in Kerala. It does, after all, have a litany of mountainsides teeming with tea plants and tea plantations. For a more surprising but kindred experience, head to Thekkady. There, you can experience a tour of a spice farm , where, if you are blessed, you might also get a home-cooked Keralan meal. You will learn the differences between a variety of black peppercorns, see what exactly a cardamom plant looks like and likely sample green clove buds straight from the plant. Should a botanical wander prove too tame, book a tour through one of two reserves: Periyar and Gavi. Periyar is a tiger reserve, so while visiting, cross your fingers that you are lucky enough to catch a Bengal tiger in its habitat. In Gavi , if you elect the more arduous hike — which, fair warning, is indeed arduous — you might also glimpse an elephant , a tiger or the fearsome wild dogs. At minimum, you will see evidence of elephants, if you catch our drift.

Wander the labyrinthine backwaters

a houseboat on the backwaters of coastal Kerala

The lush backwaters of coastal Kerala

First, a clarification. "Backwaters," the term for the nearly 600 miles of lagoons and canals just east of the Malabar Coast, does not refer to the system's placement back from the shoreline. No, the system is dubbed "backwaters" because the coast's abundant seawater is backed into the region as a result of the area's singular topography, creating brackish waterways. It is a marvel of an ecosystem, and a robust houseboat business is designed to provide tours for every type of traveler . Want a highly trafficked route where you can wave at a parade of other travelers on different houseboats? Take a round-trip jaunt from Alleppey to Kumarakom and back. Eager to experience a backwater-less-traveled? Head north to Kozhikode, near the site of explorer Vasco da Gama's first landing in India, for a wander across the Kallayi River.

Roam the ancient, urban port

a row of lodgings in Kochi, India

A row of buildings in Kochi

You can feel Kochi's age. The port city, in ancient times, was a significant hub for spice seekers. Then a sequence of colonizations over four centuries by the Portuguese, Dutch and British shaped the city. Those colonizers' influence remains, in part, in the city's structures: the Portuguese in the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica; the Dutch in the Bolgatty Palace on Bolgatty Island; the British in the Old Harbour Bridge, built in 1940.    Long before that spate of colonizers, though, the Arab world had strong ties to Kochi. You can still see the presence of the Arabic diaspora in 2024. Should you need a (temporary) break from coastal Keralan dishes , try mandi, a Yemeni dish of rice and meat advertised on endless storefronts on the route from the airport into Kochi. There are also shawarma spots, like the mini-chain Al-Taza , where you can order your shawarma on the prototypical Middle Eastern lavash or the flaky south Indian parotta, plus a bounty of restaurants that specialize in kunafa, that Arabic dessert of crackling shredded pastry and cheese doused in sugar syrup.
