Grand cayman, grand cayman excursions and cruise tours.

Grand Cayman Island, the largest of the three Cayman Islands, is a stretch of a 22-mile tropical paradise surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. It houses George Town, the capital of the Cayman Islands, and is best known for its diverse sea life and coral reefs. With so many miles of nature, culture, and adventure, there is something fun for everyone. Consider starting with an island tour from Shore Excursions.

Grand Cayman Ocean Adventures and Island Excursions

There are so many ways to get up close and personal with all of the marine life in Grand Cayman. See the beautiful coral and sea life by reef snorkeling at the Coral Gardens in the North Sound. Take a Stingray City Sandbar tour on one of our Grand Cayman excursions to interact with the giant stingrays swimming along the white sand floor. And take advantage of the many snorkeling spots, scuba diving, starfish beaches, kayaking, and jet skiing activities that the pristine waters of the barrier reef have to offer. Seven Mile Beach in West Bay is another must-visit location on Grand Cayman Island. This award-winning coral-sand beach is rated one of the best beaches in the world. Seven Mile Beach is public property, which means the entire length of the beach is open to the public and can be visited no matter where on the island you're staying. This beach is also one of the most developed areas on the island, so you'll find no shortage of restaurants, beach bars, hotels, and luxury resorts. Other great beaches on Grand Cayman include Rum Point, Starfish Point, and Kaibo Beach. George Town is a popular port-of-call cruise port in the Caribbean and is known for its shopping district, cuisine, activities, and nightlife. It's also home to the only place in Grand Cayman that manufactures liquor; the famous Cayman Spirits Distillery. You can charter a catamaran, go parasailing, take a glass-bottomed boat tour, or even take a submarine tour. If you like fishing, take a half-day or full-day private charter to fish the reef or the deep sea. While in George Town, also be sure to check out the famous Tortuga Rum Cake Factory, where you can sample a wide variety of rum cakes and take some home as souvenirs. For the more adventurous traveler, ditch the snorkel equipment and scuba gear for a spot on a helicopter tour excursion to view Grand Cayman from above. Or explore the cavernous underground wonders of the Cayman Crystal Caves in the tropical forest of the Northside district. You can also go horseback riding on the beach, an experience you'll never forget. And if you enjoy sightseeing, visit the Pedro St. James Castle or Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park. If a scenic route is what you crave, take the short ride to Hell, a small town with dark limestone outcroppings and fantastic local cuisine. Or visit the Turtle Farm, once a source for turtle meat production and now a conservation center for sea turtles. For some outdoor adventure, hike the mangroves and spot some wildlife. We have no shortage of Grand Cayman excursions and exciting tours for each visitor's needs.

When to Visit the Grand Cayman Islands

The Cayman Islands are warm year-round, with average highs in the 80s (a bathing suit is your Grand Cayman weather essential), but in colder months-January and February-the lows can drop to the high 60s. The most popular travel time in the islands is between October-April, but Grand Cayman is breathtaking no matter the time of year!

Our Grand Cayman cruise excursions offer something for every type of traveler: whether you're on a business trip or summer vacation, whether you prefer adventure or relaxation, whether you're honeymooning or bringing the kids along, you're destined for an unforgettable visit. So check out our Grand Cayman tours and excursions today to experience the beautiful vistas and charming island atmospheres right off of the cruise ship. There is so much to love about this place.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cruise Excursions In Grand Cayman

Got questions? Don’t worry, we’ve got the answers to the most frequently asked questions about cruise excursions in Grand Cayman.

What do I wear on a cruise excursion in Grand Cayman?

What you wear is going to depend on your particular excursion. If you’re going to the beach you’ll need a swimsuit and coverup, sandals, and maybe snorkel gear. If you’re exploring, you just need light, comfortable clothes and shoes.

You definitely want to remember sunglasses, and/or a hat, and sunscreen. If you’re going in the ocean, you need to have reef-safe sunscreen , meaning it does not contain Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, or Octocrylene, among other ingredients. Just because the label says “reef-safe” it does not mean that it is. Instead, opt for a mineral sunscreen, like Blue Lizard , Thinksport, or Sun Bum Mineral .

Do cruise ships tender in Grand Cayman?

Yes, Grand Cayman is a tender port. This means that cruise ships anchor in the harbor and you take a small boat to the port, which usually takes about 5-10 minutes. There are many reasons why a location might be a tender port of call, including shallow water, delicate reefs and other environmental reasons, or space limitations.

Do you need a shore excursion in Grand Cayman?

You’re never obligated to book a cruise excursion at any port, and Grand Cayman is no exception. It’s a safe island so you are absolutely able to explore on your own, but we recommend purchasing a shore excursion through a reputable company. Things sell out, so if there’s something you want to be sure to be able to do, book your spot in advance.

Do I need a passport to get off the ship in Grand Cayman?

If you are a US citizen on a closed loop cruise, meaning you begin and end at the same US port, you technically don’t need a passport, you only need an original birth certificate and a government issued ID. That being said, I do not recommend cruising without a passport.

Passports protect you when you are in foreign countries. If you are delayed, miss your ship, or have an emergency and need to fly home, having your passport makes it a heck of a lot easier to get back to the US. I strongly recommend everyone leaving the US has a valid US passport.

Do you tip on excursions in Grand Cayman?

Yes. It is expected that you tip your tour guide, your taxi driver, your waitstaff, and other folks providing services. Many restaurants include a gratuity in the final cost of the meal. You can tip in US dollars or Cayman dollars. Somewhere between 10-20% is acceptable depending on service received.

Tips for Visiting Grand Cayman

Planning a trip to Grand Cayman? Here are some helpful tips to ensure a memorable and enjoyable visit to this beautiful Caribbean island:

  • Pack Sun Protection: The Caribbean sun can be intense, so make sure to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Don’t forget to reapply sunscreen throughout the day, especially if you’re spending time at the beach.
  • Carry Cash: While credit cards are widely accepted, it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand for smaller shops, local vendors, and tips. The official currency is the Cayman Islands Dollar (KYD), but US dollars are widely accepted as well.
  • Be Aware of Local Customs: Grand Cayman is a friendly and welcoming destination, but it’s important to respect local customs and traditions. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites and neighborhoods, and always ask for permission before photographing someone.
  • Stay Hydrated: The Caribbean climate can be hot and humid, so it’s essential to stay well-hydrated. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day to stay refreshed.
  • Try Local Cuisine: Grand Cayman offers a diverse culinary scene, so be sure to sample the local cuisine. Try traditional dishes like turtle stew, conch fritters, and jerk chicken to savor the flavors of the island. Don’t forget to try the famous Cayman rum and refreshing local fruit juices as well.

Stingray City Excursion in Grand Cayman

One of my favourite experiences from my Caribbean cruise was swimming with stingrays in Grand Cayman. I’ve got to say, I was a little bit nervous when I booked it but I’m so glad I did it.

In this blog post I share what to expect from a Stingray City excursion and how you can book independently.

Where is Stingray City in Grand Cayman?

Stingray City is not far from where the cruise ship tenders stop in Georgetown. It’s situated on a sandbar in the North Sound and protected by barrier reefs in the Caribbean Sea. It’s approximately 5 miles from Seven-Mile Beach.

Stingray City meeting point

The meeting point for Stingray City excursions is at Royal Watler Cruise Terminal. Your cruise tender will either stop at the North/South Cruise Terminals or Royal Watler Cruise Terminal.

Either way, the meeting point is in no more than 5 minutes walking distance.

Royal Watler Cruise Terminal Grand Cayman

Nearby, there are plenty of places to eat. For breakfast, before the excursion, I’d recommend grabbing a coffee and a crepe from the Cayman Creperie .

Later in the day, you can enjoy the atmosphere at Grand Cayman’s Margaritaville , with views of the cruise port.

Margaritaville Grand Cayman

Can you visit Stingray City on your own?

You cannot visit Stingray City on your own but you can book a shore excursion through the cruise line or independently with a tour company.

I booked this as an independent excursion. There are several companies, which offer the chance to get up close to stingrays but after careful consideration I opted to book the Stingray City and Coral Garden Tour with Stingray City Grand Cayman .

This allowed us to visit the sand bar to meet the stingrays AND snorkel at the Coral Garden nearby. The tour included transfers to and from the cruise port and soft drinks throughout the excursion.

The Stingray City and Coral Garden Tour is a 3-hour excursion that costs $49 for adults and $43 for children. There are two times for this daily tour: 9am and 12 noon.

You should select the tour that is most suitable to accommodate the times your cruise ship is scheduled to arrive and leave.

We booked this independently but ended up joining a MSC Cruises shore excursion. This is quite common.

We booked the Stingray City excursion independently but received the same benefits as the cruise passengers (we paid less as we booked it directly with the company).

Remember, the cruise lines need to make a profit on their shore excursions.

Check out this guide if you are looking for an ultimate liveaboard diving experience.

Getting there

A short minibus shuttle took us to a little boat, which then transported us on a 20 minute ride to the sandbar.  The water is unbelievably turquoise blue.

Stingray City excursion

What to expect on a Stingray City excursion

Stingray City is a natural sandbar in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, where the stingrays swim freely.

Many boats congregate in a circle on this sandbar in the shallow water, which came up to my hips/waist level.

The skipper handed out snorkels and we were able to hop off the boat and into the water where we saw stingrays immediately.

Everyone on our tour had the chance to hold a stingray (which was surprisingly soft and smooth to touch) and feed the stingrays with squid.

The stingrays suck the food out of your hand so be careful they don’t suck a finger up with the squid. The tour guide told us exactly how to hold the squid in our fist correctly to ensure that this didn’t happen.

tui excursions grand cayman

Is it safe to swim with stingrays?

The stingrays at Stingray City are wild creatures that come to be fed. It’s important to remember that they are friendly but should be respected.

There are few things you should do to keep yourself safe on a Stingray City excursion:

  • Listen carefully to any instructions given by the tour guide
  • When walking on the seabed, shuffle your feet so any stingrays on the sand know you are there and you don’t step on them
  • Stay calm, the stingrays can sense human emotions
  • Check that there are no stingrays nearby when entering the water

Is Stingray City suitable for children?

Yes, there were children on our excursion to Stingray City. As long as children follow the instructions of the tour guide and the guidance previously mentioned they are safe to enjoy Stingray City.

Stingray City Grand Cayman require any children aged four years and under to wear life preservers during the excursion.

Although the water is shallow, it is important that your child is confident in water.

Is Stingray City suitable for people with medical conditions?

It is important that you contact the tour operator about any medical conditions before confirming a booking.

Pregnant women should inform the tour and may not be allowed to take part if more than 24 weeks pregnant.

What to bring on a Stingray City excursion

I would recommend that if you have an underwater or waterproof camera , you take it along with you to capture the stingrays as they ‘fly’ under the water.

You will need swimming costumes and a towel as well as any medication required such as an asthma inhaler.

Your belongings are kept on the boat when you are in the water so ensure you don’t leave your valuables on display.

Suncream is highly recommended but it’s worth buying eco friendly sunscreen or wearing a UV protective swimming top that protects you from the sun, without harming the stingrays or coral.

I particularly like this one by Ogeenier, which comes in a few different colours.

tui excursions grand cayman

Final Thoughts

The Stingray City excursion is one of the most popular things to do in Grand Cayman. I would highly recommend booking an independent shore excursion in advance to get the best deal.

It’s an unforgettable experience. Despite everyone remembering what happened to Steve Irwin, this excursion is safe to do provided you follow the safety instructions from the tour operator.

tui excursions grand cayman

When we visited Grand Caymen last year we had a day at seven mile beach which was beautiful and the bluest water we have ever seen. Need to go back and do this, what an amazing experience!

tui excursions grand cayman

I loved Grand Cayman and wish we’d gone to Seven Mile Beach, will have to go next time because I will definitely return to this lovely island.

Agree It was one of our favourite stops on our cruise!

tui excursions grand cayman

Wow, amazing video. I haven’t been to Grand Cayman but that looks gorgeous. Thanks for the tips.

Thanks Flavia. This is my first YouTube video. Grand Cayman was possibly my most favourite island from my Carribean cruise so if you get the chance I would definitely say it’s worth it. I now always book my shore excursions independently and on this trip we invariably were put with another cruise group – in Cozumel we even got a free lunch added in because of it!

tui excursions grand cayman

Loving the water (colour!) but I’d be terrified about the stingrays… wasn’t it one that killed Steve Irvin? Beautiful, yes, but think I’d need to be in a glass bottom boat and not in the water 😉

Thanks Sanna. This was the same thoughts that went through my mind when I was wondered whether to book it but I had a “you only live once” moment and booked it. I’m so glad I did because it was pretty special. One of the stingray tried sucking one of my fingers up into it’s mouth with the squid though!! They are beautiful creatures and they look like they are flying underwater.

tui excursions grand cayman

So brave! I don’t think I’d dare x

Thank you, I don’t consider myself to be that brave! But I do have a little streak in me that says ‘go on do it, or you’ll regret it’ 😉

tui excursions grand cayman

I’d love to do this. It’s been such a long time since I went snorkelling too. Thanks for the recommendation!

It is worth doing, it’s an experience I’ll never forget!
