Embark on a captivating journey as we guide you through the enchanting landscapes and historical wonders of the Kaurava Kunda Trek. This comprehensive guide provides a detailed exploration of this ancient Kaurava Kunda Trek, unraveling the mystique surrounding its legendary past.
During my visit to Bangalore last year, I stumbled upon numerous small hills, such as Kaurava Kunda, near the city—perfect spots for a delightful weekend day trip. These hidden gems offer fantastic opportunities for one-day treks from Bangalore , and their proximity to the city allows for a quick and fulfilling adventure that can be wrapped up in just half a day.

About Kaurava Kunda
Kaurava Kunda, a hill previously unfamiliar to me, was recommended by a fellow trekker during the Vattakanal Trek . Intrigued by the suggestion, I decided to explore this hidden gem, especially for its reputed stunning sunrise views.
The nomenclature of the twin hills, Kaurava Kunda, finds its roots in the mythological tales of the Mahabharata , associated with both the Kauravas and Pandavas. Situated in Kavaranahalli village, the base of these hills holds the historical resonance of the epic. Additionally, a midway temple devoted to Lord Shiva adds a spiritual touch to the journey.
According to my trekking companion, Kaurava Kunda surpassed popular destinations like Skandagiri or Nandi Hills for sunrise-watching due to its lesser-known status. The charm lay in the serenity of the location, as the hill remained relatively undiscovered, ensuring a peaceful sunrise experience with minimal crowds compared to the more renowned hills.
How to Get to Kaurava Kunda?
- By Road – Located approximately 75 kilometers from Bangalore city, Kaurava Kunda can be reached by car in just 1 hour and 20 minutes. Nestled in the Chikkaballapura district, the most convenient and straightforward mode of getting to the hill’s base is by driving a car or riding a bike.
- Caution: It’s important to note that arranging an auto-rickshaw for the return journey may pose a challenge, potentially requiring you to walk back to the main road.
Best Time to Trek to Kaurava Kunda Peak
The optimal timing to reach the peak is between 7 to 8 AM, especially during the winter months spanning from October to February. This period offers pleasant weather without excessive heat or rainfall. It’s advised to avoid the summer and rainy seasons, as the steep path lacks sufficient shade or cover, making these times potentially risky for trekking.
Kaurava Kunda Trek Statistics
- Distance : 5 kilometres return.
- Grade : Easy. The ascent is steep, and rain can make the trail extremely slippery. There is no well-defined path to the peak, and the final stretch involves navigating through giant boulders, adding an element of risk to the trek.
- Time taken : 2 to 3 hours.
- This hill is renowned for its night trek, allowing enthusiasts to reach the summit just in time to witness the breathtaking sunrise.
This trek is self-guided and doesn’t necessitate the assistance of a trekking agency. Nevertheless, if you are solo-traveling, it is not recommended to trek alone due to the potential isolation and loneliness on the trail.
Important Information
- Be cautious of the bushes and thorny plants along the path.
- Exercise caution around monkeys, particularly if you have a backpack or a packet.
- Wear durable and comfortable footwear.
- Ensure you have an ample water supply.
- Pack snacks and breakfast for the trek due to the absence of nearby shops.
- Respect the environment: Do not litter or dirty the area. Carry your garbage and dispose of it in a proper waste bin.
Download the Emergency Plus app for any unforeseen situations. The app does not require a mobile network; it shows your location. This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency. If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.
I want to emphasize strongly: DO NOT litter. Please carry your trash and dispose of it when you encounter a garbage bin. It’s disheartening to witness litter in these pristine locations. If we fail to care for our environment, we certainly don’t deserve the privilege of enjoying such beautiful places.
Itinerary for Kaurava Kunda Trek
The trek is perfect for half a day and is particularly renowned for night treks, allowing trekkers to reach the summit before sunrise. However, my friend and I opted for an early morning start rather than a night trek. Here’s the itinerary we followed:
Note: This was a self-planned trek, and we didn’t engage any trekking agency.
- 4:00 AM – Depart from Bangalore very early to ensure timely arrival at the peak. Many start at around 1 AM to reach the summit by 3:30 AM.
- 5:30 AM – The journey from Bangalore takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Arrive at the hill’s base and commence the ascent to the peak.
Remember to carry warm clothing, as the weather can be quite chilly.
- 6:30 AM – Reach the summit and relish the breathtaking sunrise and panoramic views of Chikkabalapura village.
Bring along a light breakfast or snack to enjoy at the peak. Avoid littering at the summit.
- 7:00 AM – Begin the descent after savoring the sunrise.
- 8:00 AM – Commence the return journey to Bangalore.
Note: Numerous darshinis (South Indian fast food joints) are available.
Is Kaurava Kunda Trek Safe for Solo Female Trekkers?
Reiterating from earlier in the post, undertaking this trek alone is strongly discouraged. Given the limited number of people and potential hazards, it poses a significant risk for solo travelers. I strongly recommend against solo treks on this route. It’s advisable to have at least one or two companions for safety. As a good practice, having a trekking buddy is always recommended in case of unexpected situations.
Regrettably, no trekking agency organizes trips to this hill.
Closing Notes
The views from the summit are undeniably worth the early morning wake-up call. The scenic panorama is truly breathtaking, especially with the clouds enveloping the peak in the morning—a sight that feels absolutely divine and refreshing. While I would personally rank it slightly below Skandagiri, which holds a magical allure, I believe starting the trek even earlier, aiming for the peak before 6:30 AM or 7 AM, could enhance the experience. Perhaps, on my next attempt, I’ll plan for an even earlier start.
Kaurava Kunda is an excellent choice for a one-day trek around Bangalore. With proper planning, it can be completed in half a day, making it an ideal weekend activity.

Kaurava Kunda Trek | Riding on a Rocky Hill
Kaurava Kunda hill is a perfect destination around Bangalore if you are looking to spend an adventurous yet peaceful weekend away from the popular crowd. This is one of the many lesser-known places around Bangalore. The trek is easy and anyone with an adventurous spirit can reach the peak conveniently.
From the peak of the Kaurava Kunda, you will be able to witness an amazing view of Nandi Hill, Skandagiri Hill and Avalabetta all in a single frame. Since this is a quite unfamous place, it is very clean and we recommend travellers to maintain the same. At Three Trekkers , we promote and follow the concept of responsible tourism.
This blog will offer all the information you need to complete this trek. We found that the Google Maps location is not quite accurate and you might find it challenging to find the trek start point. Thus, we have mentioned custom dropped pins to make your trek convenient.
How to Reach Kaurava Kunda?
This hill is located in Chikballapura district, about 70 Kilometers from Bangalore. You can reach this place within 80 to 90 minutes from the city. The shortest route to reach Kaurava Kunda from Bangalore is through the Bangalore-Hyderabad Highway.
To our surprise, the locals told us that we can ride our bikes on top of the rocky hill. However, If you do not want to risk doing this offroading part, you can park your vehicle at the base of the hill .
But, If you have the skill and passion to try out the offroad part, take a left turn at this point and proceed to ride over the rock as shown in the image above. We recommend you to avoid this trail during the monsoon as the rocks might be slippery.
What is the Best Time to Visit Kaurava Kunda?
Anytime between September to February would be the ideal for the Kaurava Kunda trek. Since this hill is surrounded by beautiful fields and lakes, the peak offers a very pleasant view with lush green surroundings on all sides.
We recommend you leave Bangalore by 5 AM so that you can finish the trek and return to base before the sun burns you out. If you are lucky, you might as well find yourself covered in a blanket of clouds at the peak.
Kaurava Kunda is also one of the few camping places near Bangalore. While you may choose to do a night trek, we recommend you reach the peak by 6 PM and camp overnight at the top. There is a wide open space at the top of the hill where you can pitch your tent easily.
Reaching the Top
The locals we met around Kaurava Kunda were very friendly and welcoming. Also, we realised that this place is one of the unfamous locations. This means that the place is less commercialised and makes for a perfect way to spend a peaceful weekend away from chaos of the city.
We found this trek to be very easy and you can complete the climb within 30 to 40 minutes. Be mindful of the loose gravel and thorny shrubs you might find on the way. You might find tiny steams of water flowing over the rocks and you have to be cautious to avoid slipping.
There are two temples on the hill which can be spotted from the base namely Anantha Padmanabha Temple and Harihareshwara Temple. These will be our first landmark to begin the trek. You may choose to park your vehicle at the location mentioned above and start your climb.
The Unexpected Bike Trek
One of the locals suggested us that we could also ride our bikes till the temple. Though this was a risky decision, our early morning dose of adrenaline could not resist us from trying this out. Since the rocks were dry and skies clear, we put our bikes on 1st gear and started our ascend with a steady throttle.
Please keep in mind that this might be challenging if you are new to riding and can prove to be very risky. If you are not confident of doing this climb, we recommend that you park your bike at the base and start the climb. But we kept our calm and rode sensibly to reach the final point. There is a safe place where you can park your bikes near the Anantha Padmanabha Temple and begin your trek.
Then you may walk towards Harihareshwara Temple and follow the tral starting from left side of this temple. The route or trails are not well laid out but we didnt find it difficult to find our way through. The peak of Kaurava Kunda will be clearly visible from the base and all you have to do is start walking towards it.
View From Kaurava Kunda Peak
True to the quote “The best view comes after the hardest climb”, we were awe struck by the beautiful view we witness from the peak. The strong winds carried the tireness away from us as we just stood there and appreciated the serenity. The big question we had in our minds was, “How could such a beautiful place as Kaurava Kunda be so unfamous?”.
While most of the surroundings are covered by paddy fields and few lakes, the back side of the hill offers a panoramic view of the nandi hill ranges covered in clouds. We spent about an hour on the peak appreciating the bliss and peaceful atmosphere.
Kaurava Kunda is also widely known as the ‘Twin Peak’ which means that you get to witness views from two different peaks on the same hill. Midway during the trek you will find two different trails which you may take to visit both the peaks.
Returning Back
Climbing down the hill is a much easier task as you will be familiar with the trails. We recommend you keep note of a few reference points while climbing so that you can return easily.
You must be able to finish this trek within half day. If you wish to explore places around, you can visit Dandiganahalli Dam and Avalabetta. We will continue to explore such amazing places around Bangalore and offer you valuable information.

Trek to Kaurava Kunda
If you drive on the Bengaluru Chikkaballapur highway, it is hard to miss the hill ranges on the left side of the road. Many hills like Nandi betta, Skandagiri, Avala Betta , Gudibande adorn the skyline on this stretch. Kaurava Kunda is one of the lesser-known hillocks in the area. This place on the outskirts of Chikkaballapur is gradually gaining popularity as a camping location and trekking with beautiful sunrise and sunset views.
Kaurava Kunda was on my bucket list of places near Bengaluru for a long time. Known for dry weather, the area around Chikkaballapur was not conducive for summer treks. But with rains lashing Bengaluru and its surroundings for the past two weeks, I was convinced that it was the perfect time to trek to this place.
Travel to Kaurava Kunda
Bengaluru (or its people) were still waking up when we started from our home. The traffic was thin, and we came out of the core part of the city pretty fast. As we passed through the airport flyover, I did not understand the need for back to back toll plazas!! We had to cross a series of speed breakers and three traffic signals at Devanahalli. “Why the hell do they collect toll for this?” I thought. A minister talked in the parliament about getting rid of such toll plazas within three months. He still has a month to prove that he is the man of his words.
As we approached Chikkaballapur, two hillocks made their appearance. I showed Chaya that it was our destination, Kaurava Kunda. They looked majestic from the highway. We crossed the town and entered village roads. Finally, we reached Hariharapura village, the base of our trek.
At Hariharapura
We were impressed with Hariharapura, a small village located at the backdrop of Kaurava Kunda. Hariharapura was a clean hamlet, a contrast to other villages near Bengaluru. We parked our car near the pond and started our trek. Villagers were helpful and provided information on the direction of the hike.
The trek to Kaurava Kunda can be split into three logical stages.
Stage 1: Easy climb to Harihara temple
We went through the village and crossed the fields to reach the base of the hill. It took some time to locate the steps leading to the temple. Once we found those steps, it was an easy climb. As we climbed up, the views got better. Due to the recent rains, some section of the rocks was wet, and we had to be careful.
Tip: To locate the steps, look for the electric line going to the temple. The steps are present where the electric lines cross the field to the hill.
The surroundings of Harihara temple looked beautiful and serene. We spent a long time enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Unfortunately, the temple was empty, and we could not get to know the history of the place.
Stage 2: Tricky route to the midpoint
Challenges started as we left the temple. There was no path further up, and we had to use our intuitions to find the way. We started from the left side of the temple. We traversed a steep rocky stretch which gave me goosebumps (due to my fear of heights). Once we crossed this section, we reached a shrub forest and boulder area.
Again, we had to find a way to cross this section. It was tricky, and we had to wade through thorny bushes and rocks. After some struggle, we found something looking like a path to go up. It brought us to a large open rocky area. The view was simply beautiful. We spent some time enjoying the scenery and started climbing the rock.
We climbed, looking in the direction of the top of the hill. Once we crossed the rock, we again reached a shrub forest. A clear path at the entry of the forest welcomed us!!
Stage 3: Steep climb to the top
The ascent further was steep, but the route was clear. We had to climb up some rocky sections. The steep section ended, leading us to a wide area. It was a good place for camping. There were some remains of old construction, but we could not find what it was.
The final climb was short but steep. Once we reached the top, the beautiful views welcomed us. It was already hot but the strong breeze provided respite from the heat.
Return to Bengaluru
The climb down was easy as we just had to retrace the steps. We spent a long time at the temple before climbing down to the village. The drive back to Bengaluru took longer due to midday traffic. We were back home for lunch!!
Information and tips
- Kaurava Kunda is about 75 km from Bengaluru.
- We took about 1.5 hours to climb up and 45 minutes to ascend down with frequent breaks.
- While the place is known for camping, I suggest doing it while trekking in a group.
- The path can be slippery during rains.
- No permissions are needed to trek to Kaurava Kunda (May 2022). I do not know about the permissions required for camping.
