Tour de France Femmes 2023 preview: Full schedule and how to watch live women's Grand Tour cycling action

Reigning champion Annemiek van Vleuten is targeting another Tour de France Femmes crown, as the second modern edition of the stage race takes place on 23 July to 30 July. Here is all you need to know before the start in Clermont-Ferrand.

The second edition of the most prestigious stage race on the women’s cycling calendar is billed as being the biggest yet. Tour de France Femmes 2023 is offering a diverse route starting in the highland region of Massif Central and finishing at the foot of the Pyrenees in Pau.

The big question before this year’s race has been whether anyone can challenge defending champion Annemiek van Vleuten , who is also an Olympic gold and silver medallist and four-time world champion.

The 40-year-old Dutchwoman has already claimed La Vuelta Femenina and the Giro d’Italia Donne this season, and victory in the Tour de France Femmes would complete the set of 2023 women's Grand Tour race wins.

22 teams will be at the start line to battle over 8 stages, not just for the yellow leader’s jersey, but also the green points classification jersey, the polka-dot jersey for leader of the mountain classification and the white jersey for the best young rider under 23 years of age.

Tour de France Femmes 2023 route

Tour de France Femmes 2023 consists of eight stages with a total of 956 kilometres of racing. The peloton starts with a fairly flat stage around Clermont-Ferrand, and from the second hilly stage, the riders slowly move towards the southwest of France.

A mix of flat and hilly stages follow until the seventh stage, where the big battle among the GC favourites will be fought on the mountainous route to the iconic Col du Tourmalet in the Pyrenees.

The race will conclude with a 22 kilometres individual time trial around Pau.

Riders to watch at the Tour de France Femmes 2023

Two-time road race world champion Annemiek van Vleuten is the big favourite for the Tour de France Femmes 2023. In the Giro d’Italia Donne that finished earlier this month, the Olympic time trial champion claimed three stages and won the general classification by almost four minutes to Juliette Labous of France in second place.

The Movistar rider is in the middle of her last season before retiring, but after having claimed both the overall in the Giro d’Italia Donne and La Vuelta Femenina, the defending champion has proved that she isn't finished yet.

Last year, van Vleuten clinched the yellow jersey by taking the last two stages of the Tour de France Femmes. 3 minutes and 48 seconds was the gap to second place Demi Vollering .

The second placed rider from last year’s edition could also be the biggest threat for van Vleuten this year. Vollering completed the Ardennes hat-trick of one-day races earlier this season, winning the Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège Femmes.

The 26-year-old SD Worx rider is currently leading the UCI World Rankings, as she has secured an incredible 13 victories already this season, and the Dutch road race champion has taken a big step up since last year’s second place at this race.

At the La Vuelta Femenina, Vollering looked like she was about to be crowned the overall winner, but van Vleuten capitalized on a toilet break and gained more than a minute on the penultimate stage to ultimately win the race.

By the looks of this season’s results, we can hope to see a breathtaking Dutch battle between van Vleuten and Vollering.

Other riders, who potentially can fight for the overall victory are Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy, Juliette Labous of France, and Katarzyna Niewiadoma of Poland.

In the battle for the green jersey, the European road race champion Lorena Wiebes will be the woman to beat. The Dutchwoman has a strong team to support her in SD Worx.

Her 24-year-old compatriot Charlotte Kool of dsm-firmenich has showed earlier this season that she has the top speed to beat Wiebes in a bunch sprint.

Last year’s winner of the green jersey and arguably the greatest female cyclist of all time, Marianne Vos , also needs to be mentioned among the contenders for the points classification.

As the general classification riders will most likely battle it out on the decisive mountain stage to Col du Tourmalet, they will also be the favourites to claim the polka dot jersey after the final stage in Pau.

‘an absolutely beautiful moment’: how the inaugural tour de france femmes can change women’s cycling.

It seems somewhat of an understatement to call the Tour de France a bike race.

It transcends cycling , shutting down every mountain pass, village, town and city it passes through, drawing huge crowds along the roadside like some kaleidoscopic carnival.

But – except for a brief period between 1984 and 1989 – women have been excluded from these festivities and, therefore, a place at the very pinnacle of the sport.

“The biggest race that most people have ever heard of … is the Tour de France ,” pro cyclist Ayesha McGowan tells CNN Sport .

“And so whenever I tell people what I do … they would always ask, ‘Oh, like … you ride in the Tour de France?’ And I’d have to inform them that women didn’t currently have a Tour de France. But now I don’t have to do that anymore.”

On Sunday, the same day as the men’s race finished, the inaugural edition of the Tour de France Femmes began beside the Eiffel Tower in Paris as the women’s peloton set out on its own eight-day odyssey across France.

This week, it winds its way eastwards through the vineyards and gravel roads of Champagne, climbs mountains reaching altitudes of more than 1,000 meters, and finishes atop La Planche des Belles Filles – a wooded mountain with upper slopes rearing upwards at a frighteningly steep gradient of 24%.

‘A rebirth’

The road to the Tour de France Femmes began in September 1955 when French sports journalist Jean Leulliot launched a five-day women’s race won by the Isle of Man’s Millie Robinson.

A sequel was not held until 1984 when it assumed a different form, this time stamped with the Tour de France’s official seal.

“In France, they didn’t think we would finish,” Marianne Martin, the eventual winner of the 1984 Tour de France Féminin, tells CNN Sport from the banks of the River Seine in Paris.

“That was the word on the street or that was the overall feeling. And of course, we all knew that we would.”

Six national teams, each comprised of six riders, started the race and Martin completed the 18-day, 1059-kilometer (658-mile) route the fastest – a feat for which she received $1,000 while Laurent Fignon – the winner of the men’s race that year – won over $225,000.

The Tour de France Féminin survived until 1989 when it was discontinued and replaced by an unofficial race that, in time, dwindled down to four stages and was eventually scrapped in 2009.

Four years later, professional cyclists Kathryn Bertine, Emma Pooley, Chrissie Wellington and Marianne Vos formed a pressure group to lobby race organizers ASO and distributed a petition that gathered almost 97,000 signatures, calling for a women’s race “running in conjunction with the men’s event … over the same distances, on the same days.”

Responding to this increasing pressure, ASO created La Course which began life as a one-day circuit race on the Champs Élysées, briefly became two stages long, and then returned to its original state as a one-day race.

An eight-stage Tour de France Femmes, organized by ASO, emerging from this fractured history is “a whole new start,” Martin says.

“It’s like a rebirth. It’s so needed.”

‘Showing the strength of women in cycling’

The reintroduction of a women’s Tour de France marks a seminal moment for gender equality in cycling.

“Women just traditionally did not have the access to resources or even the ability to do a lot of the things that men were able and allowed to do,” McGowan observes.

“There’s been a huge push to show the strength and the ability of women within cycling … cracking a lot of those myths about what women could and could not do.”

A lack of funding, live television coverage and prize money hindered the growth of women’s cycling for many years.

“I self-funded,” Martin recalls. “To get on the US team in America, you had to do certain races all around the country. And I decided I’ve got my body now, I’ll get my money later.

“I just grabbed my credit card. And honestly, I was very far in debt when I quit racing because there wasn’t the support that there is now.”

The financial cost of becoming a cyclist is beginning to alleviate for women due to the efforts of organizations like The Cyclists Alliance – the trade federation for female cyclists – and cyclists such as McGowan.

McGowan – the first African American female professional cyclist – has established Thee Abundance Project to facilitate the participation of more women from ethnic minorities in cycling.

“For me, individually, my journey was never to just be the only person there. I want to be the first, but not the only,” she says.

Thee Abundance Project’s 2022 Micro Grant Program provides its recipients with entry fees, housing, transportation, a food stipend and other resources, enabling their participation in four major American road races.

“I feel like it’s super important for people to create those structures. And if you’re in a position to try to make space and opportunities for women to get into racing, or to even progress within racing, I think that’s a necessity,” says McGowan.

By gathering information and organizing the collective power of the professional peloton, meanwhile, The Cyclists Alliance has improved working conditions for these cyclists.

In 2020, 33% of the women’s peloton worked a second job while 43% reimbursed their own team for services like mechanical assistance, medical testing, or travel costs to races, according to a rider survey it distributed.

Cycling’s governing body, the UCI, mandated a year later that Women’s WorldTour (WWT) teams – the top tier of the sport – must increase their minimum salary from $15,251 in 2020 to $27,961 in 2022, rising to $32,638 in 2023.

There is still much to be done, however, to reach equality.

Although the Tour de France Femmes is the richest race on the women’s calendar boasting €250,000 total prize money, it is a mere fraction of the men’s €2.2 million prize pot, while the financial insecurity deepens outside the biggest races and WWT teams.

Ten of the 24 teams participating in this year’s Tour are continental teams – the tier below WWT teams – and, as such, are unbound by the UCI’s minimum wage mandate.

Using data from its 2022 survey, The Cyclists Alliance told CNN Sport that only 10-15% of continental riders were paid the equivalent of a WWT minimum salary, while about 60% of non-WWT professional cyclists do not get paid at all.

CNN has reached out to the UCI for comment.

‘An absolutely beautiful moment’

The profile afforded to women’s cycling by the very existence of a Tour de France Femmes can accelerate these efforts to improve gender equality.

“We didn’t have the financial support that we have now,” Martin says of her time in cycling.

“So you bring dedicated, enthusiastic sponsors in … that are going to stand behind it and financially and technically support the event, keep it going, keep the media involved and let people know about it [then] everybody wins.”

The race’s title sponsor Zwift – a virtual cycling training platform – has already signed a four-year deal, while another sponsor, exercise tracking app Strava, has launched a campaign called Strive for More which commits to supporting equity in professional sport.

One team, Le Col Wahoo, and its sponsors have partnered with one of the television providers GCN+ to give away 10,000 subscriptions so that fans can watch the race for free, raising the profile of the sport.

“The fact that [the Tour] is such a recognizable entity is going to do wonders because people from places that don’t even know about bike racing have heard of this race,” McGowan says.

So as the women embark on the Tour de France Femmes, it too is something that transcends cycling; every attack, every breakaway, every stage win is magnified in importance because it is not just any bike race – it is the Tour de France.

“It’s going to be an absolutely beautiful moment,” McGowan says of the event. “The women’s peloton is such a wonderful group.

“I have loved being a part of it myself, just the respect that everybody has for each other, knowing how much this means and how much this is going to impact the future of women’s sport.”

Fisher-Black est d'ailleurs la première Néo-Zélandaise à remporter une étape dans cette course italienne. Grâce à cette victoire, elle fait également une bonne opération au classement général, où elle se place désormais cinquième, à une minute de la leader Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl-Trek).

"On ne s'attend jamais à l'avance à gagner une étape. On l'espère toujours, bien sûr. Mais j'ai eu de très bonnes sensations toute la journée. Je suis arrivée en Italie en bonne forme. Ça aide. Cette étape me plaisait, mais il fallait d'abord la courir", a expliqué Niamh Fisher-Black après sa victoire.

Il s'agit déjà de sa deuxième victoire de la saison, après avoir remporté la troisième étape de la Semaine Cycliste de la Communauté Valencienne plus tôt cette année. "C'est une très belle victoire, elle est très importante. Je fais aussi une bonne affaire au classement, mais ce n'est que la troisième étape", a-t-elle conclu.

D1 féminine: Fabrice Abriel devient le nouvel entraîneur du PSG et succède à Jocelyn Prêcheur

Un peu plus de renouveau au Paris Saint-Germain. L'ancien joueur professionnel Fabrice Abriel a été nommé entraîneur du PSG féminin jusqu'en 2026, a annoncé lundi le club de la capitale. Après les recrues annoncées de Mary Earps et Griedge Mbock , la direction parisienne poursuit ses grands changements au sein de sa section féminine.

Fabrice Abriel , qui a été formé à Paris et y a évolué entre 2000 et 2002, succède à Jocelyn Prêcheur, arrivé en septembre 2023 pour remplacer son père Gérard Prêcheur. Sous la direction de Prêcheur, le PSG a atteint la finale du championnat remporté par Lyon. Finaliste de la dernière Coupe de France avec Fleury (défaite contre le PSG 1-0), Abriel (45 ans) a également évolué à Lorient et à l'OM durant sa carrière de joueur.

"C'est un réel honneur d'avoir été choisi pour initier ce nouveau chapitre pour l'équipe féminine du Paris Saint-Germain. Je remercie le club pour sa confiance. J'ai eu la chance d'être formé ici et d'avoir débuté en professionnel avec ce maillot. Je suis aujourd'hui fier d'y revenir et je suis heureux d'avoir l'opportunité de rendre au Paris Saint-Germain ce qu'il m'a donné."

"Je suis impatient de commencer à travailler avec ce groupe de joueuses extrêmement talentueuses, qui ne peut être qu'ambitieuse pour les saisons à venir", a déclaré le nouvel entraîneur dans des propos cités par le communiqué du PSG.

Le nouvel entraîneur du PSG lancera sa saison avec une tournée australienne de matchs amicaux, prévue du 25 août au 2 septembre à Perth, où les Parisiennes affronteront West Ham United, Manchester City et Leicester City, trois formations pensionnaires de la Women's Super League anglaise.

Deux étapes en une journée (Dordrecht-Rotterdam puis un contre-la-montre individuel à Rotterdam) seront au programme du mardi13 août.

L’édition 2024 traversera trois pays: Pays-Bas, Belgique et France .

Ardennes, Vosges, Jura et Alpes seront les quatre massifs visités lors de cette édition 2024.

En kilomètres, la distance du contre-la-montre individuel disputé, le deuxième jour, dans les rues de Rotterdam.

Le nombre d’étapes, réparties entre /

• 3 de plaine,
• 2 accidentées,
• 2 de montagne et
• 1 contre-la-montre.

Meurthe-et-Moselle , Moselle, Vosges, Haute-Saône , Doubs, Jura, Ain, Haute-Savoie, Savoie et Isère (inclus dans trois régions: Grand Est, Bourgogne – Franche-Comté et Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes) seront l es dix départements français dont le peloton empruntera les routes.

Le nombre de coureuses au départ , réparties en 22 équipes de 7 coureuses.

En kilomètres, la distance de la plus longue étape , la 7e, entre Champagnole et Le Grand-Bornand.

En mètres, l’altitude du col du Glandon , franchi lors de la 8e et dernière étape, toit du Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift2024.

En mètres, le dénivelé positif de la 8e étape , celle qui proposera les plus dures ascensions lors de cette 3e édition.

En mètres, le dénivelé positif total de l’épreuve.

Au total 250 000 € seront attribués et mis en jeu pour les équipes et les coureuses dont 50 000 € à la vainqueure du classement général individuel final.

Juin 2022, Zoé Chauderlot prend le départ du Tour Divide, 4400Km entre banf au Canada et la frontière entre les Etats-Unis et le Mexique. Après une 1ère participation où Zoé a terminé cette course mythique en 20 jours, , l’objectif est clair : terminer en moins de 17 jours et battre le record féminin détenu par Alexandra Houchin en 18 jours 20 heures et 26 minutes. Depuis, Laël Wilcox a abbaissé le record à 16 jours et 20h.  Pour atteindre cet objectif, il faut des conditions optimales durant la course, et même avant… pourtant une hernie discale viendra contrarier la préparation de Zoé 1 mois avant le départ. Comment fonctionne le tirage au sort des barrages

La procédure complète de tirage au sort sera confirmée à l'issue de la phase de championnat de qualification., premier tour, les principes suivants s'appliquent au tirage au sort du premier tour des barrages : les équipes de la ligue a sont classées pour le tirage au sort de la voie1. le premier et les deux meilleurs deuxièmes de la ligue b* sont têtes de série pour le tirage au sort de la voie 2 et joueront leur match retour respectif à domicile. des conditions de tirage supplémentaires peuvent être appliquées, sous réserve de l'approbation de la commission du football féminin de l'uefa. *notez que la voie des barrages sera ajustée si nécessaire pour prendre en compte la performance du pays hôte de l'uefa women's euro, la suisse, qui participera à la ligue b mais qui est assurée d'avoir une place dans le tournoi final. si la suisse termine vainqueur, deuxième ou troisième de la ligue b, l'équipe la mieux classée au quatrième rang de la ligue b complétera le tableau des barrages du tour 1 et du tour 2 et le tirage au sort des six matches sera ajusté en conséquence., les principes suivants s'appliquent au tirage au sort du deuxième tour des barrages : les vainqueurs des matchs aller du tour 1 impliquant les sept équipes les mieux classées selon le classement final des championnats européens seront têtes de série pour le tirage au sort du tour 2 et joueront contre les sept équipes restantes. les têtes de série joueront le match retour à domicile. des conditions de tirage supplémentaires peuvent être appliquées, sous réserve de l'approbation de la commission du football féminin de l'uefa..
