Hailing from Liverpool, England, UK, Indie rock outfit, The Wombats, impressed with their first spate of singles, scoring hits with "Moving to New York" and "Let;s Dance to Joy Division."

The band were formed in 2003, having met whilst studying at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. Featuring Matthew Murphy (lead vocals, guitar, keyboard), Daniel Haggis (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Tord Øverland Knudsen (bass, guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), the band quickly got to work making music, They released several Eps in their early years, including "The Hangover Sessions," "No. 3" and "The Daring Adventures of Sgt. Wimbo and His Pet Otter."

After releasing their debut, "Girls, Boys and Marsupials," in Japan only, they then released a number of singles that would bring The Wombats their first taste of success. "Backfire at the Disco" peaked at number 35 in the UK SIngles Chart, followed by "Kill the Director" which also received lots of airplay. Their debut album on 14th Floor Records, "The Wombats Proudly Present: A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation," stormed the album charts, reaching number 11 in October 2007, bolstered by the success of singles "Let's Dance to Joy Division" and a re-release of "Moving to New York," which went to number 13 in the UK Singles Chart.

In 2008, the band embarked on a number of tours, traveling across the UK, Europe and Japan. They also became a big name on the annual festival circuit, playing at Glastonbury Festival, Reading & Leeds Festival and T in the Park.Their second album, "The Wombats Present… This Modern Glitch," appeared in 2010, featuring the top 40 single "Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)" as well as "Techno Fan." The album itself faired well, reaching number three in the album chart.

It was three years before The Wombats returned with new music, releasing the single, "Your Body Is a Weapon," which received significant support on BBC Radio 1. To great excitement, The Wombats began a countdown till the release of their third studio album, "Glitterbug," for a January 2015 release.

Live reviews

Oh my goodness!

It's the twelve of April on a sunny day. Me and my friend just arrived in vienna at the "Arena Wien". We hadn't seen a Wombats concert before and were something you could describe as very excited. The two pre-bands play their songs and already amaze us! (good job you guys!) Everyone is ready for The Wombats and as soon as the lights turn off everyone screams. The three guys from the band come on sage and start with their first song "Cheetha Tongue". The songs really pushes the crowd and we start making these little moves everyone makes when you are a bit unsecure but definetly hyped. This reserve doesn't hold very long and as soon as the second song starts (a song from an older album) really every person is jumping ,dancing. During the whole set Tord is moving arund the sage completly lost in the music showing that he's made for exactly this job. Murph is killing every high note and low note sings every song as if it's historischen favourite. And even Dan in the back seems to be jumping around on his drumms. Even when something isn't working with Murphs guitar during "Emoticons" these guys are super chill and Tord and Dan calmly play along with the crowd as we keep singing the "Ohhh" part over and over again. It got better with every song and I swear that the whole crowd felt like they had run a marathon from all the dancing! Especially after " Let's dance to Joy Division" and we all had gone completly crazy!

So in two sentences for the people who don't want to read that long paragraph above and just scrolled down here: It was AMAZING and I recommend to not dress with warm cloths because at least in my venue it was HOT after the first song had started and we all were dancing like crazy! If you are a Wombats fan I'd say you are dumb if you aren't going to a concert even though you have the chance to and that without meaning to be mean!

of 8 concerts this year , the bomwats was by far the best. riverstage has been crowned my favourite venue and was a perfect environment for their music , and matt’s voice is almost better live than in recorded tracks. the visuals were wild , with the backdrop thingy changing to suit every song perfectly and for a final song that drove the crowd insane , greek tragedy had everyone shouting the lyrics and a lot of people on shoulders , and even saw four or five people in wombat costumes come and dance on stage. the people i met were probably the nicest and most caring bunch i’ve been surrounded by so far and if the crowd had been any different it would have taken away from the overall satisfaction. played every song i had been dying to hear and the order of songs from the set was crafted with such intelligence that everything flowed so perfectly from one song to the next. support acts were amazing and so friendly , coming up to the merch tent for photos and just to chat and all the artists seemed genuinely happy to be a part of this. even following up with another concert the next day , nothing could top the wombats and i highly recommend seeing them more than once if you have the chance ! x

I first got into The Wombats after perusing the Top Forty and finding their latest single 'Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves) quite high on the charts. I was intrigued by the incredible album artwork, and instantly fell in love with their alternative, punky tunes. Three months later, my parents gave me permission to go to my first concert. I instantly thought of my new favourite band, and booked tickets to go with a couple of friends to see The Wombats. Fastforward to February 22nd 2012. I saw them at the O2 Academy Brixton, a large but popular venue that never fails to provide the right atmosphere for a show. The Wombats did not fail to deliver either. They played for over two hours, and all of it was explosive. They played the entirety of 'This Modern Glitch' (complete with lasers and confetti) as well as their most popular tunes from 'Love, Loss and Desperation', ending with the classic 'Let's Dance to Joy Division." Of course, not only was there a stellar performance, but their interaction with the crowd was impeccable. With Murph constantly ordering for another 'wall of death' and Tord crowd-surfing, The Wombats do not disappoint, and most certainly is not a band to miss.

Liverpudlian four piece The Wombats have amassed a huge following of their infectious indie rock over the years after they emerged as a driving force of the indie revival of the mid 00's. Their energetic performance was something that made this group stand out about the rest and the devotion to a live show is still packing out venues years later.

Although they only have two albums of material, the boys have crafted a setlist that is utter party. From the early single 'Kill The Director' an indie anthem in its own right, the crowd dance and jump along as both the band and crowd try and outdo each other with energy levels. The big cheers are reserved for 'Moving To New York' which is barked back word perfectly by the entire audience as the boys tear through this jumped up piece of pop/rock.

What The Wombats have is technical guitar music which you can dance to, a difficult sound to achieve. Closing track 'Tokyo' sees the band play complex instrumental with ferocious intensity yet the track is also so danceable that the crowd is lost within the music.

The Wombats were drop dead amazing!!! I can't even describe in words how much of a fun time I had. Their performance was just super passionate and awesome... Totally a band worth watching live. I loved their energy and how they even interacted with the audience. I felt like the usual two-hour long time frame for a concert wasn't enough for us. Went by way too fast.

Now to speak of the venue, it had its ups and downs. The good thing was that it was very clean and well maintained, easy to find, and parking wasn't too bad. The interior was really cool too. Since it was general admission, it was on a first come first serve basis to find spots. The extremely annoying part was that rude people would squeeze through and stand in people's way, blocking our original view. I think bouncers should keep their eyes out and do something about people like that. It was super rude and irritating.

They're amazing, that's honestly the best way to describe them.

They've always hyped the crowd up with so many things. Tord for example was basically jumping around playing his guitar all the time and barely stood still - when he stood still it was just to sing into his mic.

Between the songs Matthew either told some stories, introduced to the next song in a really interesting and partially comedic way - not just a boring "and the next song we're playing is ..." or just told some stories - in my case it was about how much they liked Munich - honestly LOVED that.

And now to the most important thing - their performance was straight awesome. They sounded so much better live than in their records in my opinion

That concert absolutely made my night yesterday and honestly can't wait to see the Wombats live again - hopefully soon

The Wombats are high-energy and tons of fun on stage. The lead singer is passionate and sounds just like the album live. The bassist dances around and keeps the crowd engaged. The music was perfect, they even had some moments of pure rocking out that were (seemingly) unscripted and in sync. The crowd was singing and dancing the whole time, you could tell there were plenty of true fans in the audience because there was no song that everyone couldn't sing along to.

The openers, Cheerleader and Life in Film were also really good and fit the feel of The Wombats. Cheerleader even came out after to sign autographs and take pictures, their engagement with the fans is what makes them stand out and a band to keep an eye on.

My second time seeing them - The Wombats put on a great show!

The crowd really gets into it although I have to say that the band, especially Matt, looked a bit tired compared to the last time I saw them. Might be that they're near the end of a US tour? They played both new and older stuff closing the encore with Lets Dance to Joy Division and then an instrumental, almost hardcore piece that seemed a bit out of place for them but was, actually, really good. The one thing they missed that I wished they had played was My First Wedding. But, I guess that's the luck of the draw.

Still, it's a high energy show that I loved and would love to see again!!!!

This concert was amazing. By far the best one I have been too. And the venue was incredible. So intimate. It felt like the band was sitting on your lap. The supporting bands were great and they owned the stage with their crazy moves. And the wombats were incredibly they were funny and spoke to the crowd as if we knew eachother. Their stage presence was amazing. They flaunted their guitar moves around the stage. The lights the animations and the props! Yes. They had props. Suddenly baloons flew out on stage and the mosh pit ate them up. Oh and the finishing song. Suddenly people in wombats costumes strutted in the stage. Overall INCREDIBLE NIGHT!

The Wombats at Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC, Jan 15, 2018

Excellent sold out show. This is my 3rd Wombats' tour and it was great to see a mix of ages in the crowd and lots of enthusiasm. It was cool to be singing along with the teenager next to me. The setlist was evenly distributed between all 4 albums—and I appreciated this. All the songs were good, sound was excellent and they always bring the enthusiasm to their live shows. While I think the newer songs are a little overproduced, live they are great a little rougher and raucous. The only sad thing is that this will probably be the last time I get to see this band in a club.

Even after eighteen intense years of bouncing, bellowing and soul-baring your way to the top, some successes strike when you’re not looking. While The Wombats were hard at work remotely constructing their fifth album Fix Yourself, Not The World from LA, London and Oslo, a new generation of TikTokers were sending the band viral by making over 600,000 videos – some viewed over 100 million times – around the opening lines of the Oliver Nelson remix of their 2015 Glitterbug album track ‘Greek Tragedy’: “We’re smashing mics in karaoke bars, you’re running late with half your make-up on”. “I think one influencer made a video of her dancing, singing the opening, and then it took off and every man and his dog were doing it,” says singer Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy of a viral breakout that has seen the remix streamed 30 million times, the original track 120 million (sending it gold in the US) and add 2.4 million to their monthly Spotify listeners since January 2021. “Someone sent me Charlie Puth singing it like whilst having some granola. I guess people were searching ‘what is this song?’ It turned out that remix was on some Hed Kandi compilation [Dusk ‘Til Disco, 2015] and that was the only outlet for it. It's cool that random celebrities are singing the opening lines to something I wrote a long time ago, it’s great that it’s doing well but it's just completely random.” The success of the ‘Greek Tragedy’ remix is further illustration, if any were needed, of The Wombats’ ability to remain relevant to new generations of fans through the timeless power of their songwriting alone. Formed at the Liverpool Institute Of Performing Arts in 2003, they were the three-headed guitar pop sensation – Murph, bassist Tord Øverland Knudsen and drummer Dan Haggis - that erupted out of Merseyside with Top Twenty hits like ‘Let’s Dance To Joy Division’ and ‘Moving To New York’ during the late-‘00s indie rock explosion, stamped their mark on the era with 2007’s fervidly melodic debut album A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation, and then transcended it. By 2011’s This Modern Glitch (a UK Number 3 hit) and 2015’s Glitterbug (Number 5) they’d easily hurdled the shift to streaming and become a playlist phenomenon thanks to tracks such as ‘Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves)’, ‘Techno Fan’, ‘1996’, ‘Emoticons’ and their online secret weapon ‘Greek Tragedy’. Murph’s magnificent way with melding deeply infectious melodies with dark, wry and surreal confessions from his fractured psyche and shame-filled romantic history – combined with the band’s gradual embrace of the synthetic tones and textures of modern pop – endeared them to new waves of young streaming fans (over half are under 24) and has seen their popularity continually expand. Their sets at festivals such as Reading & Leeds would draw the biggest crowd flockings of the entire weekend, and the UK tour for 2018’s Top 3, silver-certified fourth album Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life (home of ‘Turn’, ‘Cheetah Tongue’ and post-row domestic confessional ‘Lemon To A Knife Fight’ and currently nudging 300 million streams) culminated in a celebratory show at Wembley Arena, complete with dancing wombats. “Top five gig ever,” Murph remembers, “I’m very proud that we’ve stuck in like some dirty little warthogs. It hasn't been the easiest road but we've always kept our focus and it's paying off…I thought it was gonna stay in that mid-2000s indie rock phase forever and then swarms of younger people are now getting into the band and finding the older stuff.” Testament to the strength of your songwriting? “I think for me it's a combination of hard work and that lyrically and musically we've always done what we like. I've never tried to tone it down for any commercial gain. I like weird, odd lyrics, crazy titles or strange concepts for songs. I struggle to write songs that come from more of an accessible or blander place.” Not a band averse to internal frictions, The Wombats took a well-earned break after the Beautiful People tour wrapped up at Reading & Leeds 2019 and reconvened early in 2020, first as a group at Murph’s home studio in LA where a “bedrock” of four or five songs came together, then working and recording remotely throughout 2020 once lockdown hit, marshalled by a variety of producers including Jacknife Lee, Gabe Simon (Dua Lipa, Lana Del Rey), Paul Meaney (Twenty One Pilots, Nothing But Thieves) and regular Wombats desk-man Mark Crew. “The plan before we started was David Byrne - a decent amount of brass going on - meets LCD Soundsystem,” Murph says of the album’s intended direction. “All I had in the back of my head was to keep it real and as organic as possible and not throw the kitchen sink at it. Then we ended up throwing the kitchen sink at it. Somehow the kitchen sink just appears no matter how much I’d like it to disappear. It's great, but we’ve absolutely lobbed everything at it again.” With Murph in Highland Park in Los Angeles, Tord in Oslo and Dan in London, discussing each day’s plan via Zoom, then recording separately and sending individual files to the producers to mix into the finished tracks, the recording was “pure madness, to be honest. Dan and Tord can be like fire and ice and the fact that I was away and disconnected made things madder than they needed to be. I wouldn't recommend it.” The Wombats have the bond and experience to power through such setbacks however; Fix Yourself, Not The World turned out to be a remarkably cohesive, inventive and forward-thinking guitar pop record, and arguably their best yet. Incorporating cutting edge electronica, pop and R&B elements into the melodic energies of classic new wave, alt-rock and indietronica, it’s a record that will appeal equally to fans of Talking Heads, New Order, The Cure and Charli XCX. It also finds Murph turning a psychological corner: where Beautiful People… was full of semi-comic stories from the brink, or the midst, of meltdown, Fix Yourself, Not The World – as its title suggests – reads more like a self-help manual for the domesticated malcontent. “The pandemic and all the social upheaval massively influenced the idea that the most powerful thing I can do as a human being is to shake my fist at myself rather than shake my fist at the outside world,” Murph explains. “There was this Jungian theory about if you change something within yourself or your actions, you immediately change something in society as a whole.” Throughout the album, there’s a whole lot of fixing going on. The trash disco funk punk of ‘You Flip Me Upside Down’ – set in James Murphy’s Brooklyn wine bar The Four Horsemen, if not one of his catchiest fever dreams – has Murph admitting “I don’t wanna sit around and just get high” as the hedonistic life loses its lustre in the head-clearing rush of fresh love: “It’s aware that the party scene is not gonna be as fulfilling as I may have thought it was in the past,” Murph says. On ‘This Car Drives All By Itself’, a melting pot of space pop, acid house, The Tom Tom Club, ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’ and gang chant punk, he repurposes the concept of the self-driving vehicle as a topical metaphor for coming to terms with humanity’s helplessness. “I thought that that was a great way of saying, we row but the universe steers,” he says. “We're not in control as much we think and I want to learn to be okay with that.” Where Beautiful People… spotlit the plate-flinging paranoias behind marital bliss, Fix Yourself… focusses more on the transformative release of romantic commitment. ‘Wildfire’ is a heat-hazy tribute to his wife, ‘If You Ever Leave, I’m Coming With You’ an electropop ode to obsessive devotion, ‘Ready For The High’ a sultry buzz rock note-to-self to accept the good times now they’re here. Portishead-esque ballad and first release ‘Method To The Madness’ pinpoints his honeymoon in Barcelona as the breakthrough moment when Murph decided to dump his demons and “fuck my sadness”, and even a song called ‘Everything I Love Is Going To Die’ is an upbeat New Order/Cure homage about trying to live to the fullest while we still can. “Icarus was my best friend,” Murph sings, “so I’m gonna make him proud in the end”. “I’m maybe learning to start not beating myself up so much,” Murph says. “There’s only a finite amount of time that we have in these ridiculous vessels of ours and we should try to enjoy it. The whole album is kind of about not trying to control anything but just completely letting go.” Well, not completely. Dotted with snippets of Murph discussing the everyday niggles and irritations that drive him to distraction, ‘Worry’ details the superstitions, paranoias and idiosyncrasies tormenting him daily, from needing everything to be in multiples of three to an irrational fear of mariticide. “It’s supposed to be inside the head of someone who’s losing it a bit,” he explains. And the space rock ‘Work Is Easy, Life Is Hard’ finds just as much fear and confusion in the bark of the online attack dog. “It’s about cancel culture,” Murph says of pointed lines like “why don’t you chop my tongue out?” and “you don’t speak for me”. “The toxicity of social media. One of my friends said there’s no room for nuance in anyone’s opinions or views on the world, you’re either with us or you’re against us. I think people are sucked into a vortex of pretty bad ideologies when I feel like wouldn’t it be nice if we formed our own ideology individually and talked about them properly, rather than shoving them down people’s necks or cancelling people for not agreeing with us? Where is the conversation, because it’s not gonna progress anywhere without being able to talk to one another intelligently. Maybe the things you’re talking about are far, far, far too complex to be put in 280 characters.” The Wombats, on the other hand, are becoming pan-generational masters at weaving the complexities of the everyday struggle to stay sane, happy and psychosis-free into forty-five minutes of exuberant future rock, as ever more young streamers are discovering in their millions. As their unstoppable ascent continues, next year they headline London’s O2 Arena. Ready for another high?

Interview: The Wombats - When we played Birmingham the venue got covered in toilet water

They were the Liverpool band that nobody expected to stick around but Three albums later The Wombats are as strong as ever.

They head to Birmingham Institute on September 25 although their memories of the city involve a disastrous toilet mishap.

Now promoting their recent album Glitterbug, we talk to bass player and keyboardist Tord Knudsen, who plays pretty much everything for this band at different points, about their career so far, new tour and the response to Glitterbug.

the wombats tour birmingham

Do you have any standout memories of playing in Birmingham?

We once played the Barfly (I think that was the venue) and in the middle of our set, the toilets got flooded and the whole floor in the venue got covered with toilet water!

No one really seems to care though and the gig continued as nothing happened.

How were the summer festival dates for you?

The festival summer was great fun and really good to see people getting into and singing along to the songs from our new album.

Do you feel under any pressure to put songs from earlier in your career into the set?

Keeping songs from earlier albums makes the set more varied and fun to play.

We don’t feel the pressure to do so, it’s just something that’ll make the show better I think both for us and the audience!

The charts say your second album is your most successful. Is that an idea you’d agree with?

It depends where in the world you are looking.

In America for instance Glitterbug is doing a lot better than our previous albums and it is constantly growing for us over there.

Also, with the response we get to the new songs and first album songs live, it certainly doesn’t feel that way.

Glitterbug has been a big success overseas for The Wombats

How has the response to Glitterbug been so far?

We’re really happy with how the album turned out and the response from our old and new fans have been amazing!

It’s a fairly dark album compared to past records. What caused that?

I guess as a band we’ve always been a fan of the contrast with happy and up-tempo music with lyrics in a darker place.

On Glitterbug I guess we’ve got moments where the music goes a bit darker too, but some songs are some of the most positive ones we’ve ever written!

What caused the album to be delayed?

The producer we wanted to work with, Mark Crew (Bastille) was a very busy man, so we had to wait in order to fit in studio time with him.

Why do you think Wombats have stuck around where other bands have fallen by the wayside?

It’s impossible for me to tell you why, but I believe bands who a willing to work really hard both on the road and in the studio to push the band forward got a big advantage to survive in this industry.

What can we expect from your new UK tour?

We’ve been on the road pretty much non-stop since March, so the show is now perfected.

For people who haven’t seen us yet can expect a high energy and sweaty gig with both old and new songs you can dance and sing along to.

Expect moshpits, crowd surfing and Wall of Death and be prepared to loose your shoes.

The set-list will be different – we’ll be bringing back some old ones we haven’t done for a while and add a few new ones we haven’t done live yet!

The Wombats have proven a lot of doubters wrong

Is it too early to start discussing a new album?

Yeah, as we don’t write much on the road, we haven’t got that far yet apart from a few potential ideas.

We’ll start working on number four when we’ve finished the touring.

The Wombats have, perhaps unfairly, been dismissed as “landfill indie” - the idea being that they emerged along with The Holloways and Pigeon Detectives on the back of such greats as The Libertines, The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys.

Is it ever frustrating when you hear phrases like “landfill indie” passed around?

No, not really.

If you could separate yourself from that tag, what bands would you prefer to be associated with?

Our influences are so varied and I feel you can hear that in our music. Whether it’s electro, punk/hardcore, pop, folk or straight up indie we pick up little things from all of it.

I’m happy to be associated with whatever people get from the music we make!
