From Satan to Sax-a-booms: The Unforgettable Journey of Tenacious D Live in Nottingham.

Tenacious D

Tenacious D’s performance at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham was nothing short of a rock odyssey.  The Spicy Meatball Tour, featuring the legendary duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass, was a masterclass in musical theatrics, blending their signature comedic rock with a stage show that was both bombastic and intimately engaging. The buzz of the atmosphere was electric as the venue filled up. The great thing with Tenacious D they attract fans of all ages and musical commitments such as the casual listener to the hardened rock fan. As the lights dimmed, and the intro music echoed through the arena. The crowd erupted as Jack and Kyle took the stage, their presence as commanding as ever. They were the ringmasters of this rock circus, and we were all there for the ride. Between each song the audience chanted D D D. The setlist was a perfect mix containing classics like “Wonderboy” and “Kickapoo” eliciting loud sing-alongs. In fact there wasn’t a single song where the crowd didn’t participate with the two Rock Masters on the stage.

The stage design was deceptively simple, with a giant Satin which appeared during “Tribute”. Between songs, the banter flowed naturally. Jack’s quick wit and Kyle’s deadpan delivery were in perfect sync, providing a seamless transition between the music and the comedy. The sketch involving Biff (Biffy Pyro), the roadie responsible for the pyrotechnics, was a highlight, showcasing the duo’s ability to weave narrative and humour into their act. The inclusion of covers like “Wicked Game” and original tracks like “Video Games” added depth to the set, while the appearance of Satan as a dancing robot during “The Metal” brought a level of spectacle that only Tenacious D could pull off. But perhaps the most memorable moment was the Sax-a-boom duel. Jack’s playful rendition was met with cheers, only to be outdone by Kyle’s surprise Max-a-boom performance, a larger-than-life version that brought the house down with its rendition of “Baker Street.” The concert closed with “Fuck Her Gently,” a song that, despite its explicit title, was a testament to the duo’s commitment to their art form. It was a fitting end to a night that celebrated not just rock music, but the joy of performance. Tenacious D’s show in Nottingham was a testament to their status as one of the greatest rock bands in the world. It was a night of unbridled joy, a celebration of music, comedy, and the power of performance. For those who were there, it was an unforgettable experience. For those who weren’t, it was a missed opportunity to partake in a piece of rock history. Tenacious D didn’t just perform; they created a moment in time, a spicy meatball of a memory that will linger long after the last note fades away. 🤘🔥

Gig review: Tenacious D at Motorpoint Arena

The comedic duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass have embarked on their greatest tour yet. As the Spicy Meatball stopped off at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena, we joined the local metal heads on a journey through the band's discography...

TENCIOUS D 71

Opening up for Tenacious D at the Arena was a man I quite frankly had never heard of, but with such a relatively small following it was really impressive to see Dave Hill sharing a stage with The D. All props to this very funny and entertaining man for holding his own and definitely winning over the crowd. The fact he entered on a small bicycle had something to do with that.

It was great to see his Nottingham themed pick-up lines that were followed by some of the most insane old school guitar shredding I had ever seen and making for a very funny juxtaposition; doing that level of research was surprising and entertaining.

TENCIOUS D 1

Dave then moved more into his released songs with a song about a fist fight that only ever grew in its musical gravitas and ridiculousness again accompanied by Dave’s impressive guitar solos that only ever added to the comedy and enriched the experience.

After a very short wait, Overture from Tenacious D In the Pick Of Destiny began playing as Jack Black and Kyle Gass took to the stage, kicking the set off – ironically enough – with Kickapoo , these two immediately made their presence known. Jack showed off his incredible vocal range by not only singing his parts of the song but also Ronnie James Dio’s parts. With plenty of help from this incredibly loud crowd, the arena almost felt like one giant karaoke room.

Every member of the crowd knew these songs: it was quite honestly a spectacle, and there was a part of me that wanted to stand outside the arena and listen to everyone pollute the rest of Nottingham with Tenacious D’s music.

The duo continued on through the set, blessing the audience with their hits such as Tribute and Bezelboss (The Final Boss). That one blew the roof off with its epic performance, from Jack and Kyle’s perfect vocals and acting out of the scene, to the guitarist filling in for Dave Grohl’s character Satan on the song. This was easily the best song on the list with the final motif getting the crowd jumping and the whole band giving it the most energy of the night so far making for a cacophony of sound to end that part of the set.

TENCIOUS D 19

To finish the night, Tenacious D played their very funny and brilliant F**k Her Gently which led to them bringing every previous element of the set together for one final bang: the lights went crazy, Jack belted the final note, Kyle strummed incredibly fast on his acoustic to accompany, the band played to help bring the intensity up and up, and with all of the pyro and sparks shooting off this made it an ending as brilliant as the incredible band themselves.

Tenacious D performed at Motorpoint Arena on 12th May 2024.
