Alcatraz Tours

Alcatraz Penitentiary was truly "The Rock," where America sent the worst of the worst criminals from 1934-1966.

Public enemies like Scarface Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, Creepy Karpis, and the Birdman (Robert Stroud) all learned this first hand. People on the outside have always been fascinated with Alcatraz. Visitors peered at Alcatraz through telescopes when the prisoners were there, and ever since it was opened to tours, thousands of visitors have come every year.

San Francisco Comprehensive Shuttle Tours can get Alcatraz Tickets sometimes even at last minute, and we can arrange these for guests who buy our 5 our Premium City Tour (9am).

Must See & Do in San Francisco

Take the san francisco city tour.

san francisco tour company

Look for SF city tours that offer more stops and visit more than the most known landmarks in San Francisco. We recommend the SF Premium City Tour with Ferry!

Visit the Wine Country - Don't drive your first time!

san francisco tour company

We don't recommend drinking and driving thus, we don't recommend renting a car to go to Napa or Sonoma. Go on a bus tour from San Francisco that visits great wineries and has lots of variety during the tour.

Don't Miss The Redwoods - Go to Muir Woods!

san francisco tour company

So many people come to San Francisco and fail to visit the Giant California Sequioa Coastal Redwoods at Muir Woods National Park. We highly recommend this even over Alcatraz Island. Find a bus tour that uses smaller shuttles and visits other surrounding areas in Marin along with Muir Woods.

Go to Yosemite by Train instead of Car or Bus

san francisco tour company

The Yosemite Park Train Tour from San Francisco or Sacramento rocks! It's the coolest way to get to Yosemite. We highly consider you investigate the train tour versus a regular old bus tour to Yosemite.

Buy your Alcatraz Tickets Early

san francisco tour company

You need to book all Alcatraz tour combos at least 2 weeks in advance. Alcatraz tickets need to be sold as a tour combo. Be weary of anyone selling tickets solely and not combined.

Planning Your San Francisco Trip

Best time to visit san francisco.

Believe it or not, the best time to visit San Francisco is from September to November. The temperature in the city is best during the fall and the crowds are a lot less than in the summer. Summer is the peak of tourism for San Francisco, tourists hope for beautiful weather and a lot of sun, but this can be very disappointing. During summer, the average temperature is usually not higher than 60℉, and there is a lot of chilly fog accompanied by sea winds, which makes the summer not the best time to be in the city. The room rates also rise in summer since it is peak season, so be sure to book your hotel reservations months in advance if you want to visit the city during summertime.

During spring, San Francisco has mild temperatures and a lack of rain which makes it a good season to travel to the Bay Area. San Francisco is famous because of its fluctuating climate so be sure to bring layers in case the weather changes quickly. In winter, we also recommend bringing a lot of layers since it can feel frigid.

What To Bring

As mentioned before it is very important to pack a lot of layers when visiting San Francisco. The temperatures in the city can change very quickly, and every neighborhood has its own climate some days. These are called microclimates — yes, these are REAL.

If you are planning on doing a few hikes during your trip make sure to bring the right clothes and equipment. Prepare yourself by reading blogs about hiking to make sure you know what to expect.

San Francisco Neighborhoods To Visit

San Francisco has a lot of different and unique neighborhoods. This makes it a bit hard to find out what the best places are to visit when you only have a short amount of time in the city. We created a top 10 of our most favorite neighborhoods to make it easier for you to choose!

On the Dylan’s Famous Tour with Muir Woods you will visit the majority of these neighborhoods.

Fisherman’s Wharf

This is probably the most crowded and touristy area of San Francisco. The famous Pier 39 is located in Fisherman’s Wharf as well as most of the major hotels and souvenir shops. Definitely a must-see!

Chinatown attracts more visitors a year than the Golden Gate Bridge, it is a unique neighborhood which is definitely one of our favorite places in the city!

North Beach

This is where our bike shop is located. 🙂 Make sure to walk around Little Italy and to eat at one of the great restaurants.

Telegraph Hill

Telegraph Hill is located between Fisherman’s Wharf and North Beach. Make sure to visit Coit Tower for an incredible view of the city and the Bay.

Lombard Street

The famously twisting Lombard Street is a must-see when visiting San Francisco. Enjoy going down the eight hairpin turns on a unique ride of the city’s ‘crookedest street.’

The Mission

This neighborhood is famous for its colorful murals. The Mission is home to a lot of great restaurants, and on a sunny day you can hang out in Dolores park where you can enjoy a view of the city.

The Castro

This is San Francisco’s vibrant gay neighborhood, you can wander through the streets while enjoying the rainbow-flag clad streets. A big movie fan? Make sure to stop at the beautiful Castro Theater to catch a movie!

Haight-Ashbury

The “Summer of Love” took place in this vibrant and unique neighborhood. You can stroll through the street and discover the funky shops and little stores. Your trip to haight street is not complete without a stop at Amoeba Music.

Pacific Heights

Visit this neighborhood to spot the most expensive houses, Victorian homes, and impressive views in the city. This is also considered by many to have the best weather in the city thanks to the microclimates!

Financial District

The Financial District is known for the prominent skyscrapers, but there is a lot more to do. Discover the Ferry Building, City Hall and Union Square, all of it is easy to do in only one day!

The Presidio

Presidio is great for hikes, and if you rent a bike , you can bike all the way to the Golden Gate bridge through this big park. Traveling with kids? Pay a visit to the Disney Family Museum in the old barracks.

Hi friends, I’m Britt. Tour guide, explorer, and a guy who loves San Francisco more than anyone else (even the locals). I know, I know – everyone thinks their city is the best, but let me tell you, San Francisco truly is the greatest place on Earth. And I’m not just saying that because I’m biased – I’ve traveled to a lot of cities, and none of them are quite like this city.

But don’t just take my word for it – come on a tour with me and see for yourself. I’ll take you to all the best spots in the city, from the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to the hidden alleyways of Chinatown. And I’ll regale you with tales of San Francisco’s rich history and culture, guaranteed to make you laugh and maybe even shed a tear. Trust me, you won’t find a more fun or informative tour anywhere else.

With an encyclopedic knowledge of San Francisco’s history and culture, (and jokes that my mom assures me are HILARIOUS), my tours are always a hit. And when I’m not leading tours, you can find me at various outings, talking about how awesome San Francisco is (as if you didn’t already know). So why settle for a boring old tour guide? Sign up for a tour with me today and let me show you why San Francisco is the best city in the world. I promise you won’t regret it!

The Best San Francisco Tours

Calm harbor with sail boats and the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, CA. (Getty Images)

Getty Images

Whether by air, by bike, by boat, by bus or even by vintage Volkswagen, there are so many different ways to take in the beauty of San Francisco and experience its top attractions . To help you decide which method is right for you, U.S. News compiled the city's top tours, considering traveler sentiment and expert opinion. Foodies, history buffs, adventurers and everyone in between will find a tour on this list.

Editor's Pick: Dylan's Tours – Dylan's Famous Tour with Muir Woods

Price: Adults from $99; kids from $79 Duration: 5 hours

U.S. News independently paid to send Lili Weigert , an arts and travel writer based in Marin County, on this tour to provide readers with an unbiased, first-hand perspective of what to expect. Dylan’s Famous Tour With Muir Woods was selected by our team as an Editor’s Pick thanks to its popularity and favorable user reviews.

This half-day minibus excursion takes you from Fisherman's Wharf to Muir Woods and back, and includes a lively tour of some of San Francisco's most iconic neighborhoods and landmarks. Throughout the ride, our guide – a passionate San Francisco native – shared fun and surprising facts and pointed out interesting sights as we wound through North Beach , Pacific Heights, Chinatown and Alamo Square. After a dramatic photo-op at Fort Point (the waves can make a big spray!), we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and drove to Muir Woods, where we spent almost 90 minutes strolling through the trees. After a lunch break in the town of Sausalito, we headed back over the bridge, making a quick stop to admire the Palace of Fine Arts before ending back at Fisherman's Wharf.

Tours operate daily at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Know that if you choose the 8 or 10 a.m. departure, you'll have a slightly higher fee because of the extra stop in Sausalito (the 8 a.m. tour) or the Ferry Building Marketplace (the 10 a.m. tour). Dylan's Tours offers a variety of minibus tours, including a foodie tour and a daylong Sonoma and Napa wine tour.

Dylan's Tour San Francisco

Lili Weigert

Why we love it:

  • Our guide kept us entertained with fascinating historical anecdotes about the Bay Area; he even used visual aids and played music to bring the stories to life.
  • In Muir Woods, our guide explained the different paths we could explore, then left us on our own so everyone could go at their own pace and as far as they wanted.
  • The organization and timing of the entire tour was flawless – there were plenty of stops for photo-ops and our guide was very clear and respectful of everyone's questions and needs. He even had water and energy bars for us.
  • Sausalito is a lovely spot for lunch and there’s enough time for a snack and stroll through town or a waterfront meal at The Spinnaker – just ask for your check when you order!

The Nearly-Private Golden Gate Bridge Tour

Nearly-Private San Francisco Tours

The Nearly-Private Golden Gate Bridge Tour  is a two-hour round trip, led and narrated by an SF native, across the most-photographed bridge in the world. It all begins with a pick-up at San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf. From there you’ll be shuttled to the famous bridge, passing some notable SF sites on the way:  Pier 39, Ghirardelli Square, The Presidio (Home to Lucasfilm, The Walt Disney Family Museum and the Golden Gate National Cemetery), before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and making a stop at the North Vista Point.

Once you’ve arrived at the scenic north side, you’ll have the opportunity to cross the bridge on foot to the south side, or (after a short photo/restroom break) ride back across to explore the visitor center and coffee shop, before passing the Palace of Fine Arts as we return directly to  Fisherman’s Wharf. This is the perfect trip for those who want to make the most of their morning, or are on a tight schedule.

“The mystical structure, with its perfect amalgam of delicacy and power, exerts an uncanny effect. Its efficiency cannot conceal the artistry. There is heart there, and soul. It is an object to be contemplated for hours.” – Herb Caen”

“To this Gate I give the name of ‘Chrysopylae,’ or Golden Gate, for the same reason that the harbor of Byzantium was called ‘Chrysoceras,’ or Golden Horn.” – Capt. John C. Fremont

If you’re someone who’s always been fascinated by high-tech and modern California lifestyle , or you have children looking at colleges, our Silicon Valley Private Tours may surprise you!

If time spent in nature is more your speed, you’ll enjoy breathing the fresh Pacific air and strolling the Redwood forest with our trained naturalist guides in Muir Woods.  Muir Woods Private Tours journey across the Golden Gate Bridge and include time for a waterfront lunch in charming Sausalito.

The Tesla Model X SUV seats up to 5 guests , we recommend up to 4 adults, or 3 adults and 2 children. The third row is “European style” and most comfortable for 2 children or 1 adult. We’ve had 7’ tall NBA stars in our second row Captains chairs, so most humans fit comfortably!

The Tesla Model S sport sedan seats up to 4 guests . Three adults are seated very comfortably, with a rear middle seat available for a child or more petite person.

Spark Experiences are available for larger groups upon request.   Our Teslas together are able to accommodate up to a maximum of 9 persons (depending on size). Beyond that, we work with top-notch transportation partners that provide anything from large SUVs to Sprinters and full-size motor coaches.  Price upon request.

For families with kids and teens we recommend the 4hr Highlights of San Francisco Private Tour , as well as the Muir Woods, Golden Gate and Sausalito Private Tour (outdoors and active!).  These are especially engaging and a just long enough for the attention span of our younger guests!

If you have family members interested in high-tech or who are looking at colleges, our Silicon Valley Private Tour is also great for groups with older children.

We also are one of the VERY few operators who offer a customized family-friendly Wine Country private tour .

We welcome children 5yrs and up as long as they can safely sit in an adult car seat.   We frequently tour with families of all shapes and sizes, though we do not provide or allow boosters, car seats, or strollers in our Tesla vehicles .

Rest assured, ALL our guides are hand-selected and trained to be not only knowledgeable and interesting, but also kind, fun and easy to talk to.

Our founder and lead guide Heather has more than 10 years in luxury hospitality, teaching experience, and many dozen glowing 5-star reviews!

All of our Spark Experiences are carefully crafted to be top-caliber experiences that have been enjoyed by thousands of guests.  Each private tour is led by a professional guide, who is sensitive to your interests and ability.

If you would like to make substantial changes to one of our existing tours, or request a fully bespoke experience, we can customize an itinerary just for you!  Please contact us if you’d like to discuss options for curating your perfect day.

To maximize your time and access to the best sites, the optimal start time for most tours is 9am .  Other start times may be available upon special request.

Part of your Spark Experience is luxury roundtrip transportation to and from centrally located hotels within the City of San Francisco, including Downtown, SOMA, Nob Hill and Fisherman’s wharf!

We highly recommend starting all tours from your place of lodging.  We offer upgraded pickup from SFO area hotels, upon special request.  Please note that we cannot store unattended luggage or personal items or in the vehicle at any time.

Our tours are casual, so slacks, jeans and leisurewear are all perfectly appropriate.  The most important wardrobe items to pack are wind-resistant warm outer layers (year round!) and comfortable footwear for walking.

Overall, our weather is very mild and temperate, with averages in the low 60s much of the year.  We definitely recommend dressing in multiple light layers , especially for our cool ocean breezes and famous fog near the coast.

For Muir Woods private tours we recommend wearing warmer layers and athletic shoes that are OK to get a little dirty (some trails are earthen).

Its not uncommon for visitors to dress up just a little extra for Napa Valley wine tasting.  Some private Napa wine tours may include jeep rides and vineyard walks, in which case you may wish to wear more sensible flat soled shoes and avoid wearing crisp what that might get soiled or dusty out in the vineyard!

Please feel free to ask any questions regarding attire.

Our goal is for you to have a memorable experience with your loved ones – in a way that’s fun, enriching, and completely stress-free. We’re here to take care of you every step of the way, whether you’re after a leisurely and relaxed itinerary or a nimble pace to check off everything on your bucket list.  For more information about what makes us the best San Francisco private tour operator, learn more here.

You can also learn more about our founder, and about us as a company .

San Francisco Tours: 18 Best

Jill on a windy day at the Golden Gate Bridge

by Jill Loeffler   •

Updated: January 29, 2024

Even though I've lived in the city for years, I still love taking San Francisco tours. The variety of tours available allows me to continue to learn more about the city every time.

Some of my favorites include the bay cruises, walking tours, and night tours. I've recently been on some others that I enjoyed, including the SF movie tour, Yosemite one-day trips, and the all-day city tour.

You can also take one of several day tours including a trip to either Napa or Sonoma (or both), an adventure down to Monterey and Carmel, or even a helicopter ride over the city.

Below you will find recommendations for the top San Francisco tours in the city. You will also find recaps from some of my most recent trips.

If you love getting to know the city (like I do!), then taking a tour is the perfect way to learn more and understand the city like a local!

Disclaimer : I receive a small commission from some of the links on this page.

1. Alcatraz Prison Tours

More than one million people visit Alcatraz Prison every year. This small island is just a couple of miles off the coast and it makes for one of the most popular San Francisco tours each year.

You will find options to visit Alcatraz both during the day and at night. Several boats leave every day of the week to take visitors to the island. When booking, you must select the specific time you want to leave SF, but then you can take any boat back from the island.

Alcatraz Tours in San Francisco

Both options include a ferry ride to the island, a self-guided audio tour, and a chance to stroll around for a while after your audio tour. During the day, there are additional free talks offered by the park rangers.

Learn more about the day tours here . This is also where you can find tips to buy tickets for sold out days.

You will find fewer people on the island during the night tours, which allows them to open up a few more doors for public access. The park rangers also offer a more personalized touch with some guided narration as you walk up the hill to the prison entrance. Learn more about the night tours .

>> Buy a combo pass which includes both Alcatraz and a one-day Hop-On Hop-Off Bus pass

Additional Combo Tours You Will Enjoy

2. san francisco tours: guided walks.

One of the best ways to get to know San Francisco is on foot. Walking tours offer you the opportunity to step inside hidden gems, stroll down historic alleys, and get a great feel for the stories that each district offers.

Some of my favorites include the guided walks around Chinatown . This colorful district is interesting with quite a bit of little-known history. North Beach is another fun place to explore as it was home to the Beat Generation of the 50s and 60s.

I've created a list of the 10 best, so you can easily find one that works for you. Some of my other favorites include strolling around learning about our street art and searching for the parrots of Telegraph Hill. Find my 10 favorites guided walks here .

You will also find a great set of free walks through SF City Guides (part of the SF Public Library) and a few wonderful self-guided options .

3. San Francisco Bay Cruises

Cruise around the bay on one of these San Francisco boat tours. You will find a wide variety of options every day of the week.

The most popular is the SF Bay or Golden Gate Cruise . This one is offered several times a day. It's a 60-minute cruise that follows the SF shoreline, goes under the Golden Gate Bridge, back around Alcatraz, and returns to Fisherman's Wharf.

Red & White Fleet in Fisherman's Wharf

I've also created a list of the 10 best cruises , so you can find some additional options for your visit. These include the Bridge to Bridge Cruise that offers you a chance to ride under the Bay Bridge as well. Other top picks include dinner & dancing and special fireworks cruises.

4. Wine Tasting in Napa or Sonoma

San Francisco tours to Northern California wine country are also very popular. It's a great way to get an overview of one or both of the top areas just north of SF.

Napa Valley is the most famous. It takes just over an hour to reach this beautiful wine growing region. It's well known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, but it isn't the only grape grown here. You will also find plenty of Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, and dozens of others.

Sonoma County is becoming more popular and is home to more than 400 wineries. This region also offers a wide variety of wines from Zinfandel to Chardonnay.

The San Francisco tours to these regions will offer transit from your hotel in SF to the wine country and back. They usually include visits to three or four wineries. Some include the tasting fees, and some do not. Most include at least one walk through a winery's wine production facility so you can learn all about how they make their wine.

There are more than a dozen options from San Francisco. To make it easier for you to select the best one, I've created a  list of my favorite wine tours with a few important details for each one. This way, you can find the right one for your visit.

Ready to book? These are two of the most popular San Francisco tours to wine country:

  • Full-Day Wine Tour : Visit three or four wineries in Napa and/or Sonoma on a 9- to 10-hour tour. Check for availability and more details here .
  • Wine Country + Redwoods : On this one, you visit Napa and Sonoma as well as spending some time in Muir Woods. It's a full day of fun! Find out more about this tour and get ticketing information .

5. Guided and Self-Guided Bicycle Rides

Bike tours around San Francisco offer you the chance to go a little further while still being able to check out some of SF's top attractions. The most popular pick is the bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge, which you can read more about here .

Bike Riding near the Golden Gate Bridge

Most start in or near Fisherman's Wharf. You ride along the bay waterfront, up and over the bridge, and then make your way into Sausalito. From there, you can either ride back or hop the ferry to return to Fisherman's Wharf.

Recently, the tour companies have expanded their biking tours and you can now find several fun options around SF. Some of my favorites include the beer cruises and routes through Golden Gate Park.

If you prefer to head out on your own, there are several companies that offer rentals.

To find the right tour for you, take a look at my list of the best bicycle tours around SF .

6. Muir Woods

Have you heard about the amazing redwoods all around California? Your trip to San Francisco gives you the chance to see some of these 100+ year-old beauties up close.

Muir Woods National Monument  is home to dozens of majestic coastal redwood trees and it's an easy trip to get here. It takes about an hour and each guided tour offers you the chance to see them for yourself. Parking is difficult here (and requires a reservation), so these guided San Francisco tours offer you an easier way to visit.

These half-day tours leave in the morning or in the afternoon. You will get about an hour to stroll among the redwoods. You will also be picked up and dropped off from your hotel. Some offer additional time in Sausalito or a trip up to wine country.

Here are a couple of the most popular options:

  • Muir Woods Half-Day Tour : 3- to 4-hour tour with about an hour in the park, including pickup from your hotel and drop-off in Sausalito or back at your hotel.  Check for more details and availability .
  • Redwoods + Wine Country : You can see both in one day! Spend about an hour in the redwoods and then head north to wine country where you will stop at around three wineries. This full-day tour is about 9 to 10 hours long. Check for availability .

>> Find additional redwoods around San Francisco

7. Helicopter Adventures

Do you love adventure? Are you looking for a unique way to experience San Francisco? If so, then you might enjoy one of these helicopter rides.

A view from above on a plane over the Golden Gate Bridge

There are a few companies that offer unforgettable rides above the city and the gorgeous bay surrounding it. Each starts from a different place, so you can choose based on what part of the region you want to see the most of.

Head to the San Francisco helicopter tours page to learn more about each one, what to expect during your flight, and more.

8. See the Golden Gate Bridge by Foot, Bike, or Boat

The Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic attraction sitting high above the San Francisco Bay. You can either walk, bike, or drive across the bridge for a closer look at this amazing structure.

Are you looking for something more adventurous? How about a cruise under it or a helicopter ride over it? Click through to find out more about these and other popular ways to see the Golden Gate Bridge .

9. Hop-On Hop-Off Tour

The best way to get the layout of San Francisco and quickly get from one attraction to another is on a Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour. You can purchase a ticket for either one or two days.

A hop on hop off bus in San Francisco's Presidio

These San Francisco tours run just during the day, so you can hop on and off the circuit as many times as you want from 10 am to 6 pm.

The Hop-On Hop-Off route includes stops at more than 30 locations around SF. They ride through Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, and Golden Gate Park. They will also take you to the Golden Gate Bridge, the Painted Ladies of Alamo Square , and Union Square.

>> Hop-On Hop-Off Tour options

10. Other SF Bus & City Tour Options

One of the easiest ways to see the city is on a San Francisco bus tour . These San Francisco tours offer you the chance to sit back, relax, and see some of SF's iconic spots.

Many of these tours run for about 3 to 4 hours and offer you the chance to learn all about our top attractions, districts, and history. You will get up close to the Golden Gate Bridge, visit the Presidio, and see Lombard Street—one of the crookedest streets in the world—with your own eyes. Find out more about my favorite city tours .

In addition to the standard city tours, you will also find some fun themed tours. One of my favorites is the Movie Tour . This one takes you around SF and past many of the places seen in famous movies.

11. Ghost Tours

San Francisco is said to be one of the most haunted cities in the US, which is why you will find a variety of ghost tours around town. On these San Francisco tours, you will learn all about a certain neighborhood or district's dark and spooky past.

Some will take you past our historic theaters, while others will let you step inside our famous hotels where someone didn't make it out alive. All of them are at night and the stories will give you the chills.

Most run all year long with a few special options for the Halloween holiday.

>>  Discover a list of my favorites here .

12. Other Night Tours

In addition to our ghost tours, you will also find some other cool night tours around town. Of course, the Alcatraz night tour is the most popular. Others include the double-decker, open-air night tour where you get to see the glowing lights on SF's beautiful buildings.

You will also find quite a few sunset and dinner cruises. These are popular throughout the year including for special occasions or holidays.

In addition, you might enjoy our evening pub crawls, food walks, or craft cocktail adventures. Find a list of all of my favorite night tours here .

13. Food Tours

San Francisco is one of the best places to sample delicious cuisines from around the world. You will find an amazing variety of options all around the city and each neighborhood offers a unique experience.

Steamed Buns in Chinatown

The best way to get sampling is on a guided food tour. These fun San Francisco tours take you around a specific area to try out several dishes. The Mission tours offer you a great selection of Latin and South American goodies. In North Beach, you will sample mostly Italian delights.

Many people love our Chinatown food tours as you can try some foods you never knew existed as you learn about this district's interesting history.

You will also find some fun San Francisco tours dedicated to a certain type of food such as our chocolate and wine trips.

Not sure where to start? Check out a list of my favorite food tours including the types of places you will visit and some of the dishes you will most likely taste.

14. Whale Watching Tours

The Pacific Ocean just off the coast of San Francisco is teeming with migrating whales. Every year, thousands of whales migrate either north or south along our shoreline.

Each season, you can expect a slightly different type of whale coming through, from grays to humpbacks to blue whales. On these San Francisco tours, you will also see a variety of other wildlife from dolphins to turtles to all kinds of birds.

These tours start in Fisherman's Wharf and you will spend about 30 minutes getting out to the Pacific Ocean. Once you arrive, everyone on the boat will keep their eyes out for whales in the area.

All of the boats also work together, so there are plenty of people searching for whales all the time.

These trips usually last about 3 to 5 hours. Make sure to dress warm as it's cool all year long on the water around SF.

>> Learn more about going whale watching near SF

15. Day Trip to Monterey & Carmel

Monterey and Carmel are cute waterfront towns about two hours south of San Francisco. Both are easy to reach on a day trip. You will also find a few fun San Francisco tours that will take you to both locations for a visit.

The day trip offers transportation from your hotel to Monterey , through the 17-Mile Drive and continuing on to Carmel. You will then get transportation back to your hotel that evening. It's a long day, but so much fun.

It begins by taking the scenic coastal route along Highway 1 to Monterey. You will stop for a wonderful photo op along the way and get to see some amazing views from the bus.

In Monterey, you will walk around Cannery Row with plenty of time for lunch on your own. The last time I was on this tour, I got tickets for the Monterey Bay Aquarium . There was enough time to visit plus time for a nice lunch before we departed for the 17-Mile Drive.

You will make a couple of stops along 17-Mile Drive including one in Pebble Beach. You will then continue on to Carmel where you will also have some time to shop, sip some wine, and just enjoy this cute waterfront town.

You can learn more about this tour by reading my trip review here .

Ready to book? Visit GetYourGuide for more details and booking information for this tour .

16. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite is a gorgeous national park on the eastern side of California. It's about a 3.5- to 4-hour drive here from San Francisco. It's famous for landmarks such as Half Dome, El Capitan, and Yosemite Falls. It has thousands of miles of trails and dozens of amazing waterfalls.

Yosemite from Inspiration Point

If you have a full day free and want a great overview of Yosemite, then check out the day tour from San Francisco. In one day, you will be transported to Yosemite and enjoy a 1.5-hour driving tour of the park when you arrive, with a chance to take pictures at Inspiration Point.

You will then get 3 to 4 hours on your own to explore this amazing place. You can go for a little hike, do some shopping, or spend some time in the museum. Learn more about this tour and get booking options .

You will also find some great San Francisco tours to Yosemite that will give you more of a chance to relax and enjoy the park. These 2- to 3-day tours offer you additional time to explore on your own. You can camp during your stay or spend the night at a hotel inside or near the park. Here are a few options:

  • 2-Day Yosemite Tour : This small-group tour includes one night at Yosemite Lodge at the Falls. You will have time on both the first day after you arrive and the second day before you leave to explore this beauty. It includes the chance to see all of its wonders including Half Dome, El Capitan, Glacier Point, and the Giant Sequoias. Find out more here .
  • 3-Day Camping Tour : If you want to spend all of your time in nature, then check out this camping tour. Tents and camping equipment are provided (except sleeping bags). Homecooked meals by the campfire will make you never want to leave. Go hiking, explore the park, and more on this 3-day adventure. Learn more about this tour here .

17. Pedicabs

Have you always wondered what it would be like to cruise through the city streets on a pedicab? I did too, which is why, recently, I finally went on a tour with Golden Gate Pedicab.

These two-seat, open-air cabs pulled by a bike are a combination of transportation and entertainment. Your experienced guide will pedal you along the SF waterfront by several top attractions. You'll get great views the whole way.

Discover details about my journey and what you can expect on your own pedicab tour.

>> Read more about the Golden Gate Pedicab Tours

18. Whale Watching in Monterey Bay

If you decide to head south to Monterey for a few days, then I highly recommend going whale watching.

This area of the Pacific Ocean offers the perfect feeding ground for several whales such as gray, blue, and humpbacks. Many others swim through on their annual trek north.

In addition to whales, you're likely to see dolphins, porpoises, turtles, sea otters, sea lions, and many marine birds.

You'll go on this tour with marine wildlife experts who can answer all your questions throughout your adventure at sea.

Another fun activity in Monterey is kayaking. The calm waters of this bay offer the perfect place for those just starting out as well as those wanting to improve their kayaking skills. Tours and rentals are available most days of the week and run all year long.

Best San Francisco Full-Day Tour Ever! What an amazing trip around the entire city of San Francisco in eight hours with Mary, our tour guide! Fabulous experience!

Columbus, Ohio

A fantastic way to see a beautiful city. After wandering around on our own the first day, watching large tour buses go by, we decided that wasn't for us. This SUV tour is more personable, intimate, and took us where busses are prohibited—Highly recommended!

ECMSK / Michael

Our all-day private tour of San Francisco and afternoon Alcatraz Island was fascinating with Tom— he was totally delightful, terrific, conversationalist. We would recommend the entire experience as a five star excellent time.

Howell, New Jersey

Worth every penny. Professional and informative, fun, and super knowledgeable. Mary was everything you could want in a tour guide in San Fran. This is the best way to see all the wonderful things San Francisco has to offer.

Our family of four took the private SUV all day on the San Francisco/Muir Woods combination tour. Our guide, Buddy, was very knowledgeable and very accommodating to our tour needs and travel interests.

Annapolis, Maryland

A tremendous day of touring experiences in the Bay Area with Patricia! Our California trip spanned San Francisco, Sausalito, and Muir Woods forest. With two over 70-year-olds we never felt rushed … I would do it again with anyone that has never seen the city in full. Thanks for a family memory we will never forget.

Marcus/Julie Reeves

Rochester, Minnesota

A memorable vacation package close to perfection! Unbeatable and outstanding customer service from the very beginning to the end of SF experience, Alcatraz tour, and Muir Woods park trip!

Touring in San Francisco at night is amazing and is indeed a wonderful experience . We had an amazing tour of the city and all its bridges and hot spots at night, this luxury navigator SUV was VERY comfortable and the tour guide (Adam) is an excellent photographer as well!

We had a wonderful private tour with Mary visiting SF with my 75-year-old mother, sister, nephew, and cousin, so a wide-range of ages, mobility, and interests! Everyone raved about the tour as one of their favorite things that we’ve ever done.

How to Plan the Ultimate San Francisco Staycation

It’s always cool in San Francisco. Here’s how to play like a tourist without leaving town, and where to find dumplings and tacos between the museums and massages.

Share All sharing options for: How to Plan the Ultimate San Francisco Staycation

A TikToker who shall not be named recently quipped she has to get out of San Francisco in the summer because the weather is “so bad.” And to this, we say — they’re missing out. Why would you ever leave a breezy season by the bay to sweat through a heat wave across the country, or fight crowds around the world? San Francisco empties out deliciously in July when it’s possible to snag a hotel deal, splurge on a massage, and feast on the finest dumplings, tacos, and cioppino around town. Here’s how to staycation like you mean it in the city by the bay.

FRIDAY EVENING

Check into the jay hotel.

The lobby of The Jay Hotel in San Francisco

For a cool new hotel, pretend to be a luxury traveler at the Jay Hotel (433 Clay Street). No offense to the scene in Union Square, but it’s in a much more serene spot near historic Jackson Square. The hotel just got a multi-million dollar renovation and reopened in 2023. So now the striking Brutalist exterior architecture reveals stunning modern interiors by design firm Avroko. Oh, and in-house dining is all courtesy of the Omakase Restaurant Group , the team behind Niku Steakhouse and Dumpling Time , among others.

Oysters at Hog Island Oyster Co.

Oysters on a bed of ice from Hog Island Oyster Co. in San Francisco

Staycation doesn’t officially start without postcard-perfect oysters, french fries, and a glass of bubbles, slurped right by the water. Down a dozen Sweetwaters at the one and only Hog Island (1 Ferry Building), while watching the ferry boats drift by and the bridge lights twinkle on.

Nightcap at the Third Floor Terrace

Are you still shaking off work? On the elevator ride upstairs to your room, stop off at the Third Floor Terrace for one last cocktail on the deck. There are plenty of firepits to stay cozy despite the fog, and in the evenings sometimes wild parrots chatter nearby.

Croissants at Maison Nico

First things first: coffee and croissants. Any true San Franciscan knows that pastries are a competitive sport, and the current king of layers is Maison Nico (710 Montgomery Street). Wake up over a cafe au lait and your pastry of choice — seasonal quiche, pain au chocolat, or the serpentine brioche feuilletée.

Browse the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

The farmers market at the Ferry Building in San Francisco

Head back to the waterfront for the farmers market (1 Ferry Building). It’s easy to fall into a neighborhood market routine, but the Ferry Building on a Saturday morning is still a dazzling destination. Snack on samples of seasonal fruits and veggies and see how many star chefs you can spot picking up produce for the day’s menu.

Dim sum lunch at City View Restaurant

Climb toward the Dragon Gate (Grant Avenue and Bush Street) to visit Chinatown. Head north on Grant Avenue toward City View (33 Walter U Lum Place), which moved to a new location last year, swapping the white tablecloths and classic carts for a modern space with jade green booths. It’s still some of the best dim sum in the city, with explosive soup dumplings, juicy shrimp har gow, and crispy crab claws.

Wander through Chinatown and North Beach

Continue strolling under the colorful lanterns along Grant Avenue and start ducking into shops. Highlights include eating your fortune at Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory (56 Ross Alley), experiencing tea traditions at Red Blossom Tea Company (831 Grant Avenue), or upgrading your wok at the Wok Shop (718 Grant Avenue).

The exterior of Molinari Delicatessen with its blue and white awning in San Francisco

Then spill out into the checkered tablecloths and Italian pride of North Beach. Now’s the moment to restock on salami at Molinari Delicatessen (373 Columbus Avenue), seriously consider a hand-painted espresso mug at Biordi Art Imports (412 Columbus Avenue), or pick up a new book at City Lights Bookstore (261 Columbus Avenue).

Irish coffee at the Buena Vista

If you’re fading in the afternoon, it’s fair to stop for a classic cappuccino at Caffè Greco (423 Columbus Avenue) or bohemian beer at Vesuvio Cafe (255 Columbus Avenue). But as long as we’re playing tourist, keep rolling down the hill to the Buena Vista (2765 Hyde Street) and belly up to the bar for an iconic Irish coffee.

Dinner at Scoma’s

The Lazy Cioppino at Scoma’s in San Francisco

Real ones know how to dodge all the tourist traps in Fisherman’s Wharf and skip straight down the dock to Scoma’s (1965 Al Scoma Way). The “Lazy Man’s” Cioppino is brimming with shellfish yet completely free of shells. Nobody has to crack their own crab on staycation.

Ride the cable car

Go full tourist and hop on the cable car at the corner of Hyde and Beach streets. It’s possible to tag your usual Clipper card. Yes, it costs $8, but look, it’s a special treat for staycation. Ride over the hill and back to that pillowy soft hotel bed.

Brunch at Zazie

An eggs Benedict dish at Zazie in San Francisco.

For some people, it’s not a staycation without eggs Benedict. Slide into the sunny back patio at Zazie (941 Cole Street), where there are no hard decisions before breakfast. It’s possible to get one, two, or three eggs, stacked on Dungeness crab or smoked salmon. And add on a single buttermilk pancake, for good measure.

The de Young Museum and Golden Gate Park

Take a stroll into Golden Gate Park , that playground full of gardens and museums. Hit any attractions you haven’t ticked off your SF bucket list yet. Or it’s always worth revisiting the de Young (50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive) for special exhibitions. At the time of writing, there’s a fabulous fashion exhibit exploring 100 years of style by the bay.

Tacos at Nopalito

A quesadilla from Nopalito in San Francisco

If the pancake has worn off, it might be time for a taco, or at least a place to sit down with a cold margarita. The best option nearby is Nopalito (306 Broderick Street), where chef Gonzalo Guzmán grinds his own masa, deep fries carnitas, and smashes fresh salsa. The covered back patio offers a shady spot to chill for a minute.

Soak at Kabuki Springs & Spa

Okay, enough with the walking: Staycation calls for a trip to the spa. Soak tired feet in the springs at Kabuki Springs & Spa (1750 Geary Boulevard), the city’s longtime favorite public bathhouse. There are hot pools, cold plunges, steam rooms, and saunas. Make sure to check the schedule for men’s, women’s, and all-gender days, and book ahead for eastern or western massages.

Sourdough from Jane the Bakery

Bread from Jane the Bakery

Like any good tourist visiting San Francisco, the souvenir of choice is sourdough. Thankfully, whenever you stagger out of the spa, you’ll only be a couple of blocks away from one of the best bakeries in the city. Swing by Jane the Bakery (1881 Geary Boulevard) for a loaf of classic sourdough, and savor the staycation memories on toast all week.

Ellen DeGeneres Cancels Four Stand-Up Shows

Ellen DeGeneres canceled four of her Ellen's Last Stand…Up comedy shows this week after beginning her tour in June.

Shows scheduled in July and August for Dallas, San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago were canceled, per an announcement on the Ticketmaster website .

"Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event," the company shared in a statement on the site. "You don't need to do a thing. We'll issue a refund to the original method of payment used at time of purchase, as soon as funds are received from the Event Organizer. It should appear on your account within 14-21 days."

Reps for DeGeneres did not immediately respond to The Hollywood Reporter for comment.

Apart from Dallas, where she only had one show planned, DeGeneres will still appear for shows in San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago.

Ellen's Last Stand…Up is the comedian's first touring show since the 2022 end of her eponymous daytime talk show, which came after she faced claims of a toxic workplace in the summer of 2020. Previously, DeGeneres announced she would release a second and final Netflix special before the end of this year. The comedian's 2018 Netflix special,  Relatable , was the first of a  two-special deal with Netflix.

At an early performance of the show in Los Angeles, she joked about the toxic workplace controversy and said she was  "kicked out of show business" for being "mean."

Per a report from SFGate , the comedian repeated the same joke at a Santa Rosa show this week, and added, "I am many things, but I am not mean."

Music | Rolling Stones bring Hackney Diamonds Tour to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara

Mick jagger, keith richards and company hit town july 17.

SANTA CLARA, CA - Aug. 15: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards harmonize during the Rolling Stones "No Filter" tour at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019. (Karl Mondon/Bay Area News Group)

And one thing hasn’t changed in all those years:

It’s always a really big deal when Mick Jagger and company hit town.

That’s certainly the case with the band’s July 17 show at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, which is been a really hot topic among Bay Area rock fans basically ever since the group announced plans for its Hackney Diamonds Tour in November.

The trek supports the album of the same name, the group’s 24th full-length studio effort and its first collection of all original material since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.” The record has earned some really nice reviews, both by critics and fans, yet that’s not going to matter much when it comes to what songs concert-goers will most want to hear in Santa Clara.

In other words, Bay Area fans aren’t paying those big bucks in order to experience the new album’s “Mess It Up” performed live. Instead, they’ll surely be turning out to Levi’s in hopes of hearing such classics as “Gimme Shelter,” “Miss You,” “Paint It Black” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”

And, judging by the setlists we’ve seen, they’ll most likely get them when the Stones roll back into the Bay Area on July 17.

Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and tickets start at $118 (subject to change), ticketmaster.com .
