The Ultimate Guide to Snorkeling Redang Island

Redang Island is one of nine islands in the Pulau Redang Archipelago, located on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. The waters surrounding the island is protected marine park land. Thus, it is no surprise that it is one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in Southeast Asia. It is a popular tourist destination that draws visitors from all around the world.

redang-island-snorkel

For those who are looking for an alternative to Langkawi, the hippie beach town near the border of Thailand and Malaysia, Redang is a great option.

Redang Island features crystal clear waters, white sand beaches and miles of coral reefs filled with tropical fish and other marine life. The calm and warm waters make it an ideal location for snorkeling and diving.

redang-island-fish-closeup

The south side of Redang Island has some of the best snorkeling spots. Here are the best snorkel spots around Redang Island:

1 | Pulau Kerenga Besar

Off the southwest coast of Redang Island is a semicircular formation of rocks. You’ll recognize it by the rocks piles of rocks. But the real treasure lies below the surface. Dive in to find leopard fish and brightly colored parrotfish.

Pulau-Kerenga-Besar-1

2 | Pulau Ekor Tebu

South of Pulau Kerenga Besar is a small rocky outcropping. Drop anchor here and you’ll feel like you are discovering an untouched island. Swim up to the shallow shores and some friendly blacktip reef sharks may be lurking. Don’t worry, these sharks are not considered dangerous. And where there are sharks, there are fish and at Pulau Ekor Tebor, huge schools of fish converge upon another. It is an impressive sight!

redang_island_pulau_et-6

3 | Pulau Pinang

Pulau Pinang is a small island south of Redang Island and a less than 5 minute boat ride from Village Jetty. White sand beaches, picnic tables, shady palm trees and shallow waters make it a perfect excursion. Check out the turtle hatchery behind the visitors center. You just might catch a glimpse of some baby turtles.

Under the dock at Pulau Pinang, massive schools of fish swirl near the surface. Swim among the schools of anchovies and wait for them to form a spinning sphere of fish around you. The way the fish break and rebuild their formation is amazing to view.

redang_island_pulau_penang-4

On the southern tip of Pulau Pinang is another unique snorkeling spot. As you swim, hundreds of friendly damselfish and spadefish will swim up to you. Try and get a photo – you’ll probably get a few photobombs!

When to visit Redang

The best time to visit Redang Island is in the late spring or summer, after the annual monsoon season from November to March. During this time, the seas are calm and the weather is warm and comfortable. Keep in mind that resorts begin closing for the season in September.

Getting to Redang

Most visitors to Redang choose to come by ferry from either Shahbandar Jetty in Kuala Terengganu or Merang Jetty further north. Many of the island’s resorts offer their own ferry service which leave from Merang and arrive directly at the resort.

The public jetty leaves from Shahbandar Jetty in Kuala Terengganu three times a day. One way fare is RM 55. Depending on the departure time, the ferry arrives at either Village Jetty or Long Beach.

Alternatively, there is a small airport on Redang Island located near Village Jetty. The airport receives flights from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

Pulau Redang Tourist Guide

Snorkeling in Pulau Redang

中文版 | Versi Melayu

Being a gazetted marine park located off the coast of northeast Malay Peninsula, Redang is a bustling centre for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts. Besides the main island, there are also several other smaller islands in the vicinity of the main island. Although Redang has several great snorkelling spots with beautiful corals, guests should know where to head to for the good stuff as the quality of the average site is questionable.

Snorkelling trips are included in vacation packages offered by every single resort on Redang. These resorts also let their guests rent equipment for snorkelling such as life jackets, masks and snorkel, with the whole set costing around RM30 per stay. Snorkelling can be enjoyed by everyone – from children to the elderly and even those who do not know how to swim. Only a few things are required: a life jacket, mask, snorkel and the courage to jump into the crystal-clear waters! Powered masks and child-sized life jackets are available for rental, though these are only available in limited quantities. So, guests who are particular about hygiene as well as the fit of the life jackets may opt to bring along their own equipment instead.

Guides are available on these snorkelling trips to ensure that sites are current-free so guests can snorkel safely, as well as to provide appropriate assistance to guests unfamiliar with snorkelling. Snorkellers are provided with pieces of bread for fish-feeding purpose. Guests who choose to snorkel on their own off the beach should understand the risks of doing so since guides and lifeguards will not be available.

Numerous off-the-beach snorkelling spots can be found on Redang but the majority of them are only accessible via boat.

Snorkelling in Tanjung Tengah Redang

The house reefs found at Pasir Panjang’s Tanjung Tengah are most likely the house reefs with the busiest marine activity. Its southern part is aptly named the ‘Shark Bay’ because reefs in that area serve as a nursery for the young of black-tip sharks. The perfect time to spot these baby sharks is from April to August, as up to 12 of them can be spotted at any one time! Other resident marine species which thrive in the reefs on that area include an orange-striped triggerfish, schooling needlefish, a resident barracuda, squid, a few turtles and other common species of reef fishes.

This house reef has endured a marked amount of damage over all these years due to its high popularity and easy accessibility. The damage is particularly significant at corals closer to the shore as the corals are only submerged in shallow waters during low tides. As such, they are relatively vulnerable to damage during these times when snorkellers, with equipment such as fins and booties, damage these corals when they accidentally kick or step on them. Consequently, snorkellers are no longer allowed to rent fins to prevent further damage to these corals. Snorkellers should take note of a few points to avoid harming these delicate corals: exercise extreme care when snorkelling; keep a safe distance away from the corals; do not put yourself in danger by snorkelling beyond the boundaries marked by white markers as this area is where boats criss-cross across the sea.

Snorkelling in Tanjung Mak Cantik Redang

Situated at the southern end of Pasir Panjang, this house reef spans all the way from the beach in front of Redang Reef Resort to the rocky outcrop to the beach at the back of the resort. There are fewer visitors to this house reef due to its relatively isolated location. One easy way to explore the reef is to get into the water from the beach in front of the resort, then go right as you walk along the rocky outcrop. Keep an eye out for titan triggerfish, squid, porcupine fish, giant grouper, clams, Christmas tree coral, resident stingrays seeking refuge under rocks or table coral, as well as the occasional turtle.

Another way to explore would be to get into the water from the beach at the rear end of the resort. The rocky outcrop should be on the left from this direction. It should be noted that since the other side of the outcrop is facing the open seas, only experienced snorkelers should attempt to go around the outcrop as the waters tend to get quite rough there.

Snorkelling in Redang Marine Park

The title of the most popular snorkelling site rightfully belongs to the Marine Park Centre. Hence, the site can tend to be quite crowded with tourists during the holiday season. The areas surrounding Pulau Pinang’s Marine Park Centre is mainly adorned by hard corals. With a depth of 3 to 6 metres, the Marine Park Centre provides a relatively accessible place for visitors to get up and close with a multitude of different aquatic species. Among the most popular residents which thrive in the PVC pipes of the man-made reef beneath the jetty are the moray eel and the resident giant grouper.

The practice of fish-feeding by travellers to this area has made it a spot with the greatest concentration of fishes in any one place. Damselfish, wrasses, sergeant majors, parrotfish and the resident triggerfish – among some of the species found here – are always hungry and on the lookout for food distributed by the visitors. Travellers should be cautious lest the fishes mistake their fingers for food! Certain species such as adult blacktip sharks and Napolean wrasses can be sometimes seen in waters at the jetty’s western side.

A shipwreck, with only certain parts of it sticking out of the surface of the water, lies in waters on the eastern side of the jetty with a depth of about 8 to 10 metres. This is an interesting place for exploring as structures covered with corals can be found here. Travellers should exercise extreme care to prevent any physical contact with the stinging hydroids as well as to avoid being injured by the metallic structures. A number of crevices and hiding places are formed by the shipwreck, making it an excellent habitat for angelfish, batfish, giant groupers and moray eels. Travellers who swim out towards the shipwreck should keep an eye out for currents, and it is generally advisable to not go there when currents are present. Also, travellers should stay within the areas bounded by white marker buoys to avoid getting swept away by strong currents which often frequent the channel between Pulau Pinang and Redang.

Other Notable Snorkeling Sites in Redang

A house reef can be found around the area in front of Redang Holiday Resort. It is situated among the rocks beneath the resort’s hillview chalets. Travellers who intend to reach the reef should head to the left from the beach at the front of the resort, then walk along the rocky shoreline.

House reefs can also be found, albeit submerged in waters which are deeper, at Teluk Kalong’s resorts. Reefs near Redang Kalong resort’s jetty, which is just right in front of the resort, serve as another nursery for the young of blacktip sharks. Travellers can view the baby sharks from Redang Kalong’s jetty without having to get into the waters themselves, particularly if food is used to lure the creatures. On the other hand, reefs can be found near rocky outcrops which are located on either side of Mutiara resort.

There is a U-shaped bay in front of Teluk Dalam’s Taaras resort. Reefs in that area are found at the sides of the bay while the front bay has no corals as it consists of mostly areas with seagrass and sandy bottoms. Hence, snorkellers who wish to get to the coral reefs must swim further down.

The conditions of these other reefs are better than that of reefs found in Tanjung Tengah and Tanjung Mak Cantik as these reefs receive considerably less visitors than the reefs in those two places. Besides that, other destinations for snorkelling can also be found at Pulau Paku and Pulau Lima as well as some other areas. However, these sites can only be reached via a boat.

Amazing Snorkeling Experience – Redang Island

If you’re planning on visiting Malaysia in anytime in the near future you will probably come across the term ‘ Pulau Redang’ many times while researching for your trip.  If you are not yet familiar, ‘pulau’ translates to ‘island’ in Bahasa Malaysia. Therefore, when you combine the terms Pulau and Redang we begin to talk about one of Malaysia’s premier islands.

Pulau Redang is quite well known by locals and by international tourists visiting Malaysia due to its pristine beaches and underwater attraction. However, due to the monsoon season from October to February, it is visited the most from March to September. I visited Pulau Redang during the month of May.  As expected, the weather was perfect with blue skies and a balmy breeze, without a drop of rain during my entire 3-day trip.

During my second day on Pulau Redang, my travel companion and I decided that it would be a good idea to see if Pulau Redang’s underwater world still lived up to the positive reviews we had been reading online. I had my doubts, primarily because an island with so many top-notch resorts and tourists must have some ecosystem problems by now?

Our private tour boat.

Would I recommend taking a snorkeling tour on Pulau Redang?

Based on my experience, the overwhelming answer is YES! Our tour was affordable, enjoyable and very laidback.  The marine life was impressive and our tour guide made the whole experience stress-free.

There was no shortage of fish while snorkeling at Pulau Redang.

Arranging our Snorkeling Tour

Since we arranged our own accommodation before arriving on Pulau Redang we didn’t pre-book any tours on the island. I typically like to book my own rooms and my own tours opposed to packaged getaways.  This trip to Redang Island was no exception.

We decided to stay at Redang De Rimba Resort which is not on Long Beach or any of the famous beaches on Pulau Redang. Instead, our resort was near Kampung Baru – the small local village on the island. During our first day on the island we knew that we wanted to snorkel.  Subsequently, I began to look around for snorkeling companies and boat operators that might be willing to take us out for a trip during our second day on Redang. Since we were a small group of two, I knew that we wouldn’t be filling up an entire boat, which meant some negotiating would have to happen before we could agree on a price with a driver.

We stayed at De Rimba, a budget resort on Pulau Redang.

Under ideal circumstances, boat drivers on Redang Island want to fill up their vessels with as many tourists as possible.  This allows them to charge per person for their snorkeling tours which translates to more money for them at the end of the day. Since we were a group of two, I knew that we were going to have to pay a premium for the luxury of going on a private snorkeling tour. I approached two different boat operators.  Both of which wanted too much money for the simple snorkeling excursion that we were looking for.

Eventually, we decided to try at our resort to see if their prices were comparable to the other drivers we had spoken to.  Surprisingly, they were even cheaper than the private operators who were advertising similar snorkeling tours (cheaper by about 10 RM per passenger). Similarly, they also were very open to letting us draft up our own little tour itinerary. I also liked their transparency in terms of telling us upfront that all snorkeling gear would be provided at no extra cost as part of the tour. We would pay for our own lunch.

Our Snorkeling Tour Itinerary

When we were coming up with our itinerary for the day, we had two main priorities: 1) we wanted to snorkel at two different spots for an hour each and 2) we wanted to visit Long Beach for lunch and some fun in the sun afterwards. To our surprise, our resort said that we could “ stay at Long Beach for as long as

[we] wanted. ” After a short discussion, here is the itinerary that we agreed on:

8:00 am – Pick up at Resort

8:30 am – Begin Boat Trip around Pulau Redang

9:00 – 10:00 am – Snorkeling Session #1

10:00 – 10:30 am – Boat Transfer

10:30 – 11:30 am – Snorkeling Session #2

11:30 – 11:45 am – Boat Transfer to Long Beach

11:45 – Onwards – Free time on Long Beach, Pulau Redang

Total Cost for 2 Passengers = 200 RM

(Included in price: driver, pick-up, ground transport and all snorkel gear. Not included in price: lunch)

Our Snorkeling Experience

Based on the itinerary above, we ended up snorkeling at two different spots near Pulau Redang. We didn’t go into the Marine Park for these sessions to save some time and money. Our tour guide (boat operator) turned out to be quite enthusiastic about snorkeling and swam with us at both sites.  His ultimate goal was to show us unique types of fish species. He was really laidback in terms of time.  This made the experience much more pleasant because we didn’t have to worry about other tourists cutting our snorkeling sessions short. We could have snorkeled for an extra 30 minutes at each site, and I honestly feel like he wouldn’t have cared.

Our tour guide was full of enthusiasm during our snorkeling sessions

Overall, I was quite impressed with the different types of fish species that we saw at both sites. I’m not a marine biologist by any means, therefore I won’t attempt to name specifics, but there was an abundant amount of fish swimming around us (and we didn’t have to feed them). Some of the coral was noticeably dead, but there were some signs of healthy growth and colors in some of the areas. Considering how close we were to Pulau Redang, the coral was quite impressive as a whole.

A school of large fish, off of Pulau Redang.

Here is a video of our snorkeling experience in the beautiful waters of Redang Island:

Our Visit to Long Beach, Pulau Redang (Redang Island)

Once we finished our second snorkeling session, we immediately headed to Long Beach on Pulau Redang for a late brunch. Since we opted to choose our own brunch, it wasn’t included in the total price of our snorkeling tour. This allowed us to choose exactly what we were looking for when we arrived at Long Beach.

Visiting Long Beach as part of our snorkeling tour turned out to be a good decision. After burning some calories and working up an appetite during the morning snorkeling sessions, it was nice to find a wide selection of beachfront restaurants to choose from. The beach itself is quite striking with very powdery white sand and crystal clear water. A rocky headland in the middle of the beach makes it quite picturesque to snap photos as you relax on the beach. We didn’t spend the night on Long Beach, but based on my impressions of it, it looked like a great spot to stay while on Pulau Redang. Next time, I would probably opt for another snorkeling session after lunch to bring the full day total to three opposed to only two.

Laguna Redang Island Resort is directly located on Long Beach.

Where did we stay while on Pulau Redang?

We typically arrange our own accommodation opposed to booking packaged vacations.  Therefore, we booked online well in advance at Redang De Rimba Resort . It isn’t near Long Beach, but rather, near the local village on the island. With only local houses and restaurants in the vicinity we experienced more of the local culture on the island opposed to staying at an isolated beach resort or on Long Beach. At the time of writing Redang De Rimba Resort had a score of 6.5/10 based on 29 verified guest reviews .  We don’t have a direct affiliation with this property or any property on Redang, therefore in an unbiased manner we can say that this score is probably a bit low for this property. It’s not fancy or luxurious by any means but it wasn’t particularly bad. Actually, we sort of thought its hillside location was ideal for tourists who want to experience the local culture while being close to the jungle. The staff were also super friendly.

If you’re travelling and you want something on Pulau Redang that’s a bit more upscale, family friendly, or closer to the beach then here are the most popular choices based on verified guest reviews at the time of writing:

The Taaras Beach & Spa Resort – rated 8.2/10 based on 575 verified guest reviews . I actually visited this property during my time on Pulau Redang. It’s located on a super nice private beach with spectacular water which is perfect for swimming. If I had the choice and the cash, I would stay here on Pulau Redang over any other resort.

The Taaras Beach & Spa Resort is blessed with spectacular clear water.

Laguna Redang Island Resort – rated 8.0/10 based on 11 verified guest reviews . I saw this property during our visit to Long Beach. It’s ideally located right on one end of Long Beach.  A very nice, well managed property. I would consider this to be the best property on Long Beach.

How to find the cheapest rooms on Pulau Redang?

I have visited most of Malaysia’s islands. Each and every time I plan a trip I refer to one of these three reputable sites: www.agoda.com , www.booking.com or www.hotelscombined.com . Agoda.com is the most popular booking site in Malaysia and Southeast Asia for that matter whereas www.booking.com is extremely popular with our readers due to their excellent customer service and second-to-none cancellation policies. The third site that we commonly use to find the cheapest rooms is www.hotelscombined.com because it’s a price comparison site that compares all the world’s best room providers simultaneously.  I have created links to their respective property lists for Pulau Redang to save you some time:

redang snorkeling trip

Hi we are planning to visit Redang and stay at Ta Taaras in April. We will book snorkel tours but in between would like to snorkel off the beach (I have a 10 year old to keep occupied!) Is there any snorkelling off the beach or to see anything do you need to go by boat further off shore? Thanks!

redang snorkeling trip

Hi can I make a day trip to snorkel from kuala Terengganu without staying on the island? Any operator to recommend? Thanks

redang snorkeling trip

Nice post and pics! So your snorkeling tour was booked with the resort Redang De Rimba Resort ?

Yes, we booked it through our resort Redang De Rimba, but there are also independent tour offices on the island. You have a choice on which operator to choose. Please like our Facebook page, and give us a review: https://www.facebook.com/chasingplaces.net/ . Thanks

Thank you very much for the valuable information.

redang snorkeling trip

Hi! Very nice post.

I’ll be staying at Taaras hotel and I have requested snorkeling prices but as I imagined, they are super expensive. (they charge 41MYR just for the equipment)

Where can we go in the island to look for other options?

If you want a better price, you have to go outside Taaras Hotel and walk towards Kampung Baru. There are snorkeling tour offices near Redang de Rimba Resort. YOu can also talk to the staff of de Rimba, they would most likely know a boat operator who will give you a good price.

redang snorkeling trip

Hi, im wondering if you managed to get a tour outside the Taaras, i saw Taaras prices, it’s steep!

Yes, you can book a boat tour outside of Taaras. What you need to do is to get out of Taaras complex and walk towards De Rimba Resort. If you don’t know where De Rimba resort is, just check the google map or ask locals or hotel staff. On your way to De Rimba, you will see a tiny tour office that offers boat transfers and tours. De Rimba Resort is closer to the village jetty of Redang Island. I hope you get a good deal!

The 15 Top Redang Island Activities & Attractions

You are currently viewing The 15 Top Redang Island Activities & Attractions

Redang Island is famous for its breathtaking natural beauty, and there are many things to do on the island. You’ll find your perfect activity no matter what mood strikes: whether relaxed, exploratory, adventurous or just looking to meet people.

We’ve compiled a list of the top 15 Redang Island activities and attractions you won’t want to miss, so prepare yourself for an exciting week!

1. Go snorkeling

a group of snorkelers

Redang is a paradise for divers and non-divers alike. Diving remains the top activity here, but snorkeling still offers a unique underwater experience without diving too deep or spending too much money.

The Redang Island Marine Park has impressive biodiversity and is located in a protected marine area. During the season, the surrounding waters are calm and clear. Numerous species of marine life can be found in Redang, including clownfish, parrotfish, angelfish, baby sharks, and coral reefs.

You can snorkel around Redang to view the island’s fascinating marine life, and there are plenty of chances to see turtles, which is what the island is renowned for.

If you’re here during the non-monsoon period, you can snorkel anytime. The best time to explore the underwater world is from April until August, when visibility and water quality aren’t affected by waves or currents.

Many resorts offer snorkeling trips as part of their holiday packages, which will take you to the best snorkeling spots on the nearby islands. You can also find independent operators at Long Beach or villagers who offer snorkeling activities and excursions starting at about RM50 per person. Independently organized snorkeling trips tend to be cheaper than those provided at resorts, and you can negotiate a price depending on the number of people in your group and the spot you’re interested in.

Snorkeling excursions will take you to amazing spots and smaller islands like Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Lima, and Teluk Mak Kepit.

Snorkeling off the Beach is an alternative to snorkeling trips. Several locations around the island are ideal for this, including Teluk Kalong, in front of Taaras Resort at Teluk Dalam, Tanjung Mak Cantik and Tanjung Tengah at Pasir Panjang (Long Beach). Beautiful coral reefs, turtles, and even young blacktip reef sharks can be found here.

Most resorts offer rental snorkel equipment for RM30 for a set of masks, snorkels, and life jackets.

Update (2021) – In response to Covid-19, most resorts have stopped renting equipment.

Read more at Redang Island Snorkeling Guide .

2. Scuba Diving

suba diver taking photo of a green turtle

In Malaysia, Redang Island has some of the best scuba diving spots.

Located within a protected marine park that forms part of the Coral Triangle between Indonesia and The Philippines, Redang Island has a wealth of beauty and biodiversity. The archipelago, which comprises a collection of small islands, is surrounded by crystal clear waters, making it the perfect spot for divers of all levels.

The island has over 20 dive sites with varying depths and difficulty levels, so there is something for everyone. Popular diving spots include Tanjung Tokong, Tanjong Lang, and Terumbu Kili. Divers can also explore two large WWII shipwrecks.

Redang’s best diving months are between March and October when no monsoon rain causes strong wind or current.

Consider getting certified at one of these fantastic dive centers if you have never scuba-dived before. PADI courses are available for beginner divers up to expert divers who want more in-depth training. Those who aren’t ready to take the plunge but would like some exposure can participate in “Discovery Scuba Diving” programs without obtaining certification.

3. Jungle Trekking

There’s more to Redang Island than relaxing on its beautiful white sand beaches and exploring its vibrant marine environment.

There is also a great diversity of plants and animals, such as macaques, monkeys, and monitor lizards. It is possible to cross paths with mouse-deer ( Sang Kancil ), which live in the island’s forest. Tropical pitcher plants, or Nepenthes, are also among the interesting species you can see here, but they are becoming less common.

Those who visit Redang island tend to explore the eastern side, as this is where most resorts are located. Hiking is best done in the morning to catch the sunrise on the east and enjoy the cooler weather, making hiking enjoyable.

Take a pair of shoes with you if you plan to explore the island on foot. There are many hiking trails on this beautiful tropical paradise, and you are sure to find serenity here.

Here are some popular routes to explore:

Pasir Panjang/Long Beach to Teluk Dalam

This trail is one of the most popular and well-used paths on the island. It connects Long Beach to Teluk Dalam (where Taaras resort is). Other than boat rides around the bay, there is no road access between the two points.

The walk is about 2 km each way from either direction and takes 45 minutes to 1 hour.

From Pasir Panjang, you can also walk up the main road to the village after the trail ends at Teluk Dalam. This is how the locals use this path to get between the village and long Beach.

It’s not a strenuous hike, but if your fitness isn’t very good, you might feel tired. Make sure you pack drinking water and snorkeling gear so that you can swim on the other part when you get there.

Long Beach to Teluk Kalong

The walk from Long Beach to Telok Kalong is a stroll along a well-marked path. Head towards the jetty from the Laguna Beach Resort at Teluk Bakau, then follow the trail, keeping left, onto Telok Kalong beach.

From the northern end of Teluk Kalong, it will probably take you another 40 minutes to get to the southern end, where Redang Mutiara is located. Halfway along, you must cross a rocky outcrop and trek 500m inland to reach the next part of the Beach.

The Teluk Kalong beach walk is quiet, and there aren’t as many resorts as on Long Beach. Since most of the time you will be on the sand, flip-flops are a great choice.

There is another trail that will take you up to a hilltop with spectacular views at the back of Wisana Resort. The climb to the top will take about 40 minutes, and the descent back will take about 15 minutes. If you plan to do this en route, pack your drinking water and wear sports sandals or shoes.

Tanjung Mak Chantek

This is a good choice if you’re looking for a short hike with lovely views next to Long Beach. Tanjung Mak Chantek Cape is located at Long Beach’s southern end. It is incredible to see the sunrise from the top of the cape if you wake up early enough.

There are two ways to get to the viewpoint. At Long Beach, you can enter the trail at the back of a More-More Tea Inn or enter at the football field near Laguna Jetty.

After about 20 minutes of hiking, you will reach a hilltop with a stunning view of the island’s east side.

4. Visit the Redang Marine Park Centre

Redang’s most popular snorkeling spot is around the Marine Park Centre on a small island called Pulau Pinang. Snorkeling tours usually include a trip here, but you can also rent a boat to get here.

The best place to snorkel is near the jetty. At depths of 3 to 6 meters, there is a large variety of marine life and corals. It is possible to see giant groupers, moray eels, octopuses, turtles, and many other types of fish. For more information, visit Pulau Pinang Snorkeling.

Visitors to the Marine Park center can choose from a variety of activities while there. The most popular activities are diving and snorkeling, but there is much more to explore.

Since 1990, the Department of Marine Park Malaysia has maintained this centre as a research facility that protects, conserves, and manages marine environments.

The exhibition centre is an excellent opportunity for many people to learn about marine life and conservation activities. There is also an exhibition of a turtle sanctuary where you can see baby turtles from the park’s hatchery.

Explore the island on foot. It is still possible to see an old cemetery on this island since it was once the home of the local fishermen who were later relocated to the main island.

To begin this short and scenic hike, take a right at the jetty. Follow the path until you reach an end and then turn left towards the hill area. Follow the short trail uphill until you reach the viewing tower and the lighthouse.

You can see a full view of beaches and a panoramic view of Redang Island from the top.

If you prefer to relax on the beach or have a picnic, you can do that too. There are picnic tables here as well as small shops where visitors can purchase food and drinks. Remember to dispose of all your rubbish and leftover foods in the designated bins on site after use.

The marine park centre offers basic facilities for visitors. There is no village or hotel here. Instead, there are camping grounds that serve as educational venues. There are restrooms on-site, as well as a small mosque.

Redang Island requires visitors to pay a conservation fee, which you would have purchased at the jetty on the mainland. If you don’t have the receipt with you, you’ll have to repurchase it when you enter the marine park center.

Fish Feeding

Fish feeding activities are common at the marine park, and many people assume it’s okay to feed the fish, but it isn’t.

It is not recommended because it may affect the fish’s ability to behave naturally as herbivores (plant eaters). Fish fed an unnatural diet may adversely affect both their plant-eating patterns and the ecosystem as a whole. This imbalance on reefs is becoming more and more common, resulting in the overgrowth of algae, which slowly fades coral reef colors and eventually causes them to die.

If you must feed the fish, make sure to do so in moderation. You would be better off just watching them rather than feeding them.

What would happen if there were no coral reefs?  https://reef-world.org/blog/no-coral-reefs

5. Turtle Watching and Conservation Activities

There is no better place to observe turtles in their natural habitat than Redang Island.

It is easy to spot turtles during dives and snorkeling around the island. The main species found here is the green turtle, which comes here during the mating season. Hawksbill turtles also frequent the island.

One of the main activities on the island is the conservation of turtles, which is administered by the University Malaysia Terengganu’s Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU).

Visiting the SEATRU Turtle Lab at the Taaras Resort is highly recommended. In collaboration with the island resort, SEATRU educates visitors about turtle conservation and the importance of protecting these animals.

Visitors can see turtle eggs in incubators at the lab and learn how they grow. The resort’s laboratory also has a glass display where you can watch turtles hatch.

Turtle nesting season is from May to July, and watching turtles lay eggs is a memorable experience. The best place to see turtles nesting is Pasir Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary. This Beach, however, is closed to the public, and it is a guarded area. Some of the resorts can sometimes arrange a trip here with SEATRU’s permission.

You can also watch baby turtles released into the sea during the hatching season from April to October. An annual turtle release program is held from June to August at the Taaras Resort at Teluk Dalam and Laguna Redang on Long Beach. Seeing the turtles up close and watching their journey back to the sea is a great experience.

It is a good time for kids to learn about nature and the importance of protecting these sea creatures for the future.

SEATRU offers volunteer programs for nature lovers who are interested in learning more about turtle conservation. As a volunteer with SEATRU, you will have the opportunity to assist with conservation work at nesting sites, hatchling releases, and environmental education. The event is open to volunteers from all over the world from April through September every year, and there are only ten participants per slot each week. Sign up early through their website.  https://seatru.umt.edu.my/

6. Snap a cool selfie at the Redang Maldives, aka Atas Busung

Another must-see attraction on Redang Island is Busung Pulau Kerengga or the White Sand Bar of Kerengga Island. A crescent-shaped strip of pure white sand surrounded by blue water emerges at low tide, creating a picturesque scene. At every low and high tide, the shape changes.

Tourists and locals alike flock here to take photographs.

This particular sandbar has been named “Redang Maldives.” In Malay, it is referred to as ”Atas Busung”. Easily accessible from Teluk Kalong, its pure white sand can be seen from Teluk Kalong as well.

A boat usually takes you to the sand bar as part of your snorkeling trip. You can also kayak from Teluk Kalong beach.

7. Enjoy Fun Beach Activities

On the Beach, you will never get bored because there are so many other things to do. Take a swim, kayak, stand-up paddleboard, bodyboard, or play frisbee.

Transparent kayaks have recently become popular on the Beach. You can rent one if you like paddling and seeing underwater life at the same time.

You can paddle through a mangrove forest near Alor Raja near Teluk Dalam Besar if kayaking interests you. Mangroves are one of the most biodiverse coastal habitats in the world, and they are home to a wide range of plants and animals.

The sand is a great place to run or do your daily exercises.

When you’re on a beach, there are no limits to what you can do. At Redang, however, jet skiing, water skiing, boat racing, and fishing are prohibited because the island is a protected marine park, and motorised water sports activities could damage coral reefs and aquatic life.

*Fishing is strictly prohibited within a radius of 2 nautical miles (3.7km) around the marine park.

8. Relax at the beach

On the beach, sometimes the best thing to do is nothing. Spend your vacation relaxing, breathing fresh air, and admiring gorgeous scenery. Lie down on the soft white beach sand and enjoy the gentle sea breeze.

You can also read while basking in the sun. Don’t forget to wear a hat and sunglasses. Sunscreen is a must.

9. Stargazing and watching the sunrise/sunset

sunset at pulau redang

Get up before dawn and head to the beach to catch the sunrise.  Seeing the light over the horizon is definitely an unforgettable experience.

Long Beach and Teluk Kalong offer the best views. There will be relatively few people on the beach in the morning, and it will be tranquil. You can even meditate in peace on the beach.

At sunset in Redang, the view is equally captivating. The best way to spend a romantic evening is to stroll along the beach with your significant other during sunset.

Even though the sunset set is on the west side of the island, away from the beach resort, you can still enjoy observing the skyline turn various magnificent shades of orange and red as it fades into the night. Some resorts offer sunset tours, or you can charter a boat to watch the sun slowly disappear into the horizon.

During the night, the stars are bright, and you can gaze at them for hours on end if you wish. Seeing the stars at night on the beach is an enchanting experience. Make sure to bring a camera with a tripod because star trails can be awe-inspiring if there is no cloud cover.

10. Nightlife

At Long Beach, you can chill out during the night after spending hours in the sun. While Redang isn’t a party destination, Long Beach has the best atmosphere of all. Bars and restaurants are open until late at night, and you can order alcoholic beverages.

On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, some bars have live music. This is a fun place to chill out and sing along with others. Many resorts have karaoke lounges, pool tables, and board games available for guests to have fun with their family and friends.

Those who enjoy nature can also observe the sea creatures at night on the beach. If you go for a walk on the beach at night, you’ll need a torchlight since it can get quite dark.

Crabs, mudskippers, and ostracods are some of the nocturnal animals that are interesting to observe.

The ostracods are tiny crustaceans that emit blue light to attract a mate or serve as a defensive mechanism. You can find them by gently sweeping the sand near the water’s edge, and they will glow bluish in the dark. This is a fascinating phenomenon known as ”blue sands” or ”blue tears”. It is often seen off Long Beach’s southern end, where Redang Reef Resort is situated.

*Important: Do not attempt to collect these tiny creatures for your collection. In such conditions, they will barely survive, and you will not be able to discover the blue speck.

11. Savour the local food

spicy prawn and stinky bean sambal

On this island, you have the opportunity to experience local Malaysian cuisine and delicacies. While many people book all-inclusive holidays that include a meal plan, you should venture outside the resort and try the local cuisine.

There are many restaurants on Redang Island to enjoy fresh seafood, local dishes, and snacks. Explore various eateries around the long beach and Redang village to sample local dishes.

You can also try Terengganu’s specialty, kelopor lekor and telur kubis from the village warong (stalls). Keropok lekor is a deep-fried fish sausage made from local fish and sago flour, spiced with salt and sugar, and served with a spicy sauce.

The Telur Kubis is the local twist on the omelette pastry in which three layers of deep-fried flour wrap are wrapped with layers of shredded cabbage, fish, and eggs. According to legend, this snack originated in Redang and was once served to royalty.

It was known as Telur Kubis because it was wrapped up with seven layers that resembled a cabbage (Kubis is Malay for cabbage). Locals pronounce it as ”Kue telo Kobeh” or ”Telur Kobis”.

For more recommendations, see the ”Where to Eat in Redang” section.

12. Learn Batik Crafting

batik crafting

Batik is a part of Malaysia’s rich textile heritage, and you can learn how to make batik at Redang Island.

The Sun Batik Gallery at Redang Beach Resort Long Beach provides an interactive discovery tour for visitors interested in learning more about batik cloth, designs, and how it’s made. You can take part in a workshop to create your unique piece of custom batik art cloth.

At Sun Batik Gallery, you can find various batik infused with modern cartoon characters or popular pop cultures such as Finding Nemo, Totoro, and more.

Everyone can do these crafts, regardless of age or experience level, making it an excellent place to visit if you’re traveling with children. You can also order readymade batik clothes or have a custom design printed on request.

13. Get souvenirs

You won’t want to leave Redang Island without getting souvenirs. You can find a variety of souvenirs for sale in the resorts, stalls on beaches, and villages of the island, such as batik mats, tee shirts, and beachwear.

Among the many souvenir shops on Redang Island, the most noteworthy is the “More More Tea Inn,” located in front of Laguna Resort. Bright and colorful, this house was originally built as a set for the Hong Kong film “Summer Holiday” in 1999. A harsh island climate caused the structure to deteriorate rapidly after filming. The Laguna Redang Island Resort rebuilt it in 2003 to create a more robust structure based on the original film. Since then, it has become a landmark on the island.

The colorful house makes an excellent backdrop for photographs, so visitors will flock here to take pictures.

14. Get pampered at the spa

Your body deserves some pampering after enjoying all that Redang offers, and a spa day is a perfect way to do so.

Redang is never short of spa packages, which is good news. Treatments include luxury spa experiences, massages, manicures, and facials. The prices of massage treatments vary from RM35 to RM880 per session, depending on the treatment type and resort. Traditional foot massage, oil massage, body scrub massage, and aromatherapy massage are popular.

You can find massage places in Long Beach at the Sari Pacifica Resort & Spa Redang. Also, try the D’Manja outlets at the following resorts:

  • D’Manja Forest Spa & Salon @ Laguna Redang Island Resort
  • D’Manja Beach Massage @ Coral Redang Island Resort
  • D’Manja Ayu Ombak @ Redang Bay Resort

In Teluk Dalam, you can enjoy excellent spa treatments at Taaras Spa within the Taaras Resort. There is a wide range of massage and salon services for men and women and honeymoon packages. It’s an excellent way to pamper yourself and enjoy yourself on vacation at this exquisite spa.

Reservations are highly recommended because these services always fill up very quickly. Guests can book directly at the spa or through the resort.

15. Redang Island with kids

Redang is the perfect destination for families with kids.

With a wide range of activities to keep the most energetic kids happy as well as plenty of relaxation opportunities, this island paradise is ideal for those with children in tow. The kids will have fun learning about turtles, swimming, snorkeling, and even making their batik art.

There are several excellent family-friendly accommodation options on Redang Island. Some resorts also have kids’ clubs and pools where children can enjoy themselves while you relax with a good book.
