Review: "Losing by a Landslide" - Sophia Alexa

Sophia Alexa just dropped her brand new single “Losing by a Landslide!” It’s a folk-pop track that delves into the insecurities created by societal expectations for young adults. As an adult, she feels inadequate compared to the standards set up for her. She starts off the song by painting a late night scene in her room, the street lights burning through her windows. She “sick into [her] stomach/holding conversations with the moon.” She mindlessly scrolls on the internet, searching for a distraction. As the night progresses on, she starts to believe every lie she’s been told about her 20s. Sophia says she’s left in a “20 something drought” and can hear the voices telling her all the things she should and shouldn’t be. She says “I’ve been losing by a landslide now,” and is scared of feeling like she’s missing out on her life. In this illusion she describes as a “reckless game,” she feels like “[she’s] lying down in [her] fate” and feels perpetually stuck in this game. She dives more into this insecurity of missing out, saying she’s missing on friends and “occasions to [her] detriment.” This is a pattern in her life, but she still is “asking how it happens everytime” After repeating the pre-chorus and chorus again, she describes the feeling of trailing back home, “when all of a sudden/I lose all control,” but yet, she finds comfort in sadness.

The production on “Losing by a Landslide” is pure bliss. With a folksy mandolin in the introduction and delicate, airy vocals from Sophia, it’s a calming yet exciting track. Despite the lyrics taking on a sadder tone, but because of the production, I imagine myself listening to this song while going on a late night beach walk in the summer. Sophia does something interesting with the double tracking of her voice. Double tracking is a technique created by recording two or more vocal lines to match each performance as close as possible to give the vocals depth or richness. Sophia, on the other hand, doesn’t completely replicate her original vocal line perfectly, which adds this interesting characteristic to the vocals that wouldn’t have been there. The verses stay pretty folk-pop, while the introduction of some drums in the choruses give the track a more pop edge. As a whole, the track is reminiscent of 70s folk and soft rock tracks from the greats like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. One thing I really like about the track is that the production sounds live. In the age of electronic instruments, live instrumentation is so refreshing to hear in mainstream music. Overall, “Losing by a Landslide” is a carefully crafted folk-pop track with 70s-inspired flairs that make a truly innovative song. 

Sophia is a singer-songwriter born in California but raised in New Amsterdam. However, she’s lived in London for over a decade. Constantly changing schools as a kid, she found herself feeling out of place and turned to music to be her constant in her life. She grew an affinity to artists like Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Stevie Nicks, and Neil Young, who have all had an influence on her sound, which is a fusion of modern music with a folk-pop flair. She released her first single, “House of Cards,” in 2021, and soon followed with her debut EP, “Groundwork.” Impressively, she released another EP in late 2022 called “Before I Go.” The EP itself has garnered several million streams, and has caught the attention of BBC Introducing, Spotify’s “New Pop UK” and “Fresh Finds UK and IE.” Amazingly, Sophia played alongside Billy Joel at his 2023 gig at Hyde Park London on July 7th, 2023. In addition, she’s done shows at Sound City Liverpool 2023 and toured with Bailen on their 2023 UK tour. It’s clear that Sophia Alexa has already made waves in the music industry, and she will continue to impress audiences with her vulnerability, relatively, and her passion for her craft.

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. My dad would play a lot of music around the house. He always played such a range of music from Sade to the Doors, lots of jazz, country and artists from the 70s. I feel lucky to have been exposed to so much music. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Joni Mitchell, Blue Taylor Swift, folklore (deluxe version) Joni Mitchell’s album ‘Blue’ is one of my favourites. It has such a range in terms of lyrics, and melodies and at some points leans more toward jazz. ‘folklore’ by Taylor Swift is also an album that's beyond inspiring to me. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “The Way You See Me” I think a song of mine I love is ‘The Way You See Me’ because it’s a concept I had been trying to write about for a while, and finally found a way to translate it. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? One of the most memorable moments so far was when I received a few messages after releasing my latest EP 'Before I Go' about how relatable a song felt to them. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? There are so many things on my bucket list. At some point I would love to create a longer-form project or album as well as doing a headline tour!

AleXa announces final list of dates and venues for her first US tour

Tickets are set to go on sale next week

Korean-American singer AleXa has announced the venues for her upcoming concert tour of the United States.

Earlier today (August 17), events production company Studio PAV released the final list of dates and venues for the vocalist’s first headlining tour of the country. Earlier this month, AleXa herself had shared a list of dates and cities but without specifying venues.

AleXa is set to kick off her tour in New Jersey, before holding performances in Puerto Rico, Georgia, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas and California all throughout October. Dates and venues for her tour are as follows:

October 2022 18 (Tuesday) – Jersey, White Eagle Hall 20 (Thursday) – San Juan, Teatro Francisco Arriví 22 (Saturday) – Atlanta, Ferst Center of the Arts 23 (Sunday) – Chicago, Avondale Music Hall 25 (Tuesday) – Oklahoma, Tower Theater 27 (Thursday) – Houston, Hobby Center 28 (Friday) – San Francisco, Marine’s Memorial Theater 30 (Sunday) – Los Angeles, Avalon Hollywood

Tickets are set to go on sale on August 26, at 2PM local time. More info will be available here . VIP tickets are priced at $129, and include a signed poster, a VIP badge and first entry to the concert venues. T2 tickets (priced at $79) give fans entry to the venue after VIP ticket holders while T3 tickets (priced at $39) give fans entry to the venue after T2 holders.

A separate meet and greet package available for $89 includes access to soundcheck, a Q&A session and a group photo with AleXa. Admission to the concert proper, however, is not included in the package.

Sophia alexa's “hall pass” is a pensive reflection on self-sabotage.

Predestination, especially one cast with music in mind, is a common theme amongst the sonically literate, a belief that constructs into truth the more one exercises its communicative gifts. For the deftly retro-sounding newcomer Sophia Alexa, spurred by a childhood of transcontinental moves, music was a traveling friend, a gift of understanding that could span oceans and accommodate any changing setting. Under the supervision of her music-obsessed father, Alexa grew up listening to the best of '70s Americana, spanning from Joni Mitchell to Joan Baez. Tat brightness built around acoustic guitars, vocal forward production, and self-harmonization has followed Sophia on her songwriting journey right up to her latest brilliantly constructed release, “Hall Pass.” 

Echoing her uptempo single "Hit & Run," a bright diatribe on leaving before the pain can set in, "Hall Pass" slipstreams into another sweet feature of the rising artist's sound as she balances opportunistic sounding production with darker, pensive lyrics. Right from the soft-spoken lyrics over lightly strummed guitars, followed by a rising pre-chorus over a pulsing kick, the song lures you in with pretty plucking but leaves you in a state of melodic melancholy when the song's narrative reveals itself slowly.

Describing the track's lyrical origins, Alexa states, “I wrote hall pass because I wanted to capture the feeling of self-sabotage. I’ve always had this fear that when something is going too well, I’m just waiting for it to fall apart. It’s almost a form of protection and being okay with someone leaving before you get hurt, which is why I loved the title hall pass, it’s giving someone an out.”

The contrasting nature of Alexa's music is a musical hall pass of sorts. It lets you bellow out lyrics that sound like hot girl summer but semi-secretly disguises you cathartically expelling your indecision, angst, and relationship woes. Sophia Alexa has just released your new favorite EP, and it’s called  Before I Go .  If her awe-invoking and breathtaking vocals aren’t enough to blow you out of the water, the songwriting will for sure.  Before I Go  is vulnerable, honest, painful, and transparent to its absolute core. In conversation about the EP, Sophia had this to say:

“The EP ‘Before I Go’ is about navigating my way through my relationship with myself and the world. It starts off with ‘To A Fault’ which describes my loyalty being used against me. The other songs touch on my fears around relationships such as settling, changing too soon and being stuck in the past of what used to be. A work all about navigating yourself and how you fit into the lives around you,  Before I Go  is nothing short of a masterpiece. With light, flowy vocals mixed with an electro-folk blend, this EP is scratching our brains in all the right places. Sophia does her best to remind us that all you can do is try your best and be honest. And obviously, she does it beautifully.

It’s safe to say we have our own journal, a hot cup of tea, and boxes of tissues on standby while we burn this EP into our skulls. With lines like “I wanna bury the memory, When it haunts me at night, All the months that I’ve given, Just to keep you alive.” Can you blame us?

Sophia Alexa announced as the support for Bailen on 4 of their UK tour dates

Alternative American music group Bailen have announced the supports for their UK tour which kicks off later this month, with Fast Friends own Sophia Alexa to support them at their Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and London shows in October and November 2023.

Taking to Instagram to make the announcement, the band said:

We’re stoked to have all of these exceptionally talented artists to share the stage with us! We’re so excited to hear their sets and you should be too!
