Journey & the life of Ram

We all have had our heartbreaks, went through a rough phase, isolated ourselves from the rest of the world, maintained silence for a period of time and have cried all night. In such situations, we all wanted to pack our bags, disappear and travel for a while. Right?

Ram is a li’l different. He often thinks of his high-school romance – Jaanu, and never moved on from her. Not even a bit. No, not getting into the judgmental zone of whether it is right or wrong. But let’s take a moment to thank him for choosing to follow his passion – Photography and travel that came along as an additional gift.

This song ‘Life of Ram’ was/is being unanimously loved by everyone in Tamil Nadu, but I’d like to talk about ‘Journey’. Journey is Life of Ram’s telugu version and the team decided to rehash the telugu fresh tune in Tamil too. We aren’t getting into the Life of Ram or Journey discussion, because both are just beautiful in the way they are.

The Govind Vasantha – Pradeep Kumar – Karthik Netha trio strikes gold again with this track too. The song welcomes us with the simple percussion and guitar strums and sucks us in when Pradeep strikes “Naan Enbadhu Yaaro.. Perundhiraliniley..” and once we get into the song, there’s no turning back. The song literally transports us to another world, somewhere peaceful… a different space; where we are alone in peace but not lonely. Karthik Netha drops some aesthetically picked Tamil lyric for this song, that gels amazingly with the tune & Pradeep elevates the same with his amazing voice.

The song describes how Ram is being himself, living the moment. The interludes are such joy for the eardrums. Special mention – the 2nd interlude! I’m amazed by the way Karthik Netha penned…

and sync’d perfectly from the Tamil ‘Life of Ram’ without disturbing the tune.

San Francisco originated rock band,  Journey  is regarded as one of the best-selling rock bands in the history of rock and roll. Despite the successes the band has achieved over the years, it was quite the opposite in the beginning stages of their career.

The band experienced a number of challenges from their formation in 1973 until 1978 when they broke through with the release of several series of hit songs. 

Just as their name suggests,  Journey  has encountered some bumps on the road to fame in the form of commercial failures, disbanding and reuniting, inconsistent line-ups among many others.

With their musical style varying between seven different genres- Album Rock, Arena Rock, Contemporary Pop, Progressive Rock, Soft Rock and Adult Contemporary, the unique sound of the American band has also been altered drastically.

As of 2020, the line-up consists of these able musicians:

• Neil George Joseph Schon (guitarist & songwriter)
• Ross Lamont Valory (bassist)
• Steve Bruce Smith (drummer)
• Jonathan Leonard Friga popularly as Jonathan Cain (Keyboardist)
• Arnel Campaner Pineda (Lead Singer)
• Randall Darius Jackson (bassist)
• Narada Michael Walden (drummer)
• Jason Derlatka, a temporary backup for the band

Interesting Facts about Journey

With over 80 million sold records worldwide, this group has climbed the ladder to become one of the most celebrated bands in the United States.

The group was nominated for a Grammy Award for  Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal  in 1996.

Their 1981 album  Don’t Stop Believin  became the top-selling track on iTunes Songs not released in the 21st Century. The same album took the No.3 spot on iTunes for the most downloads in 2005.

The albums,  Escape  and  Frontiers , earned the No.1 spot on the Billboard’s 200 and No.6 spot on the UK Albums Chart respectively. 

Journey  is currently ranked the 96th Greatest Artist of All-Time by  Video Hits One  (VH1).

Seven of  Journey’s  current and past members were inducted into the  Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame  in 2017 and received a  Hollywood Walk of Fame  star on January 21, 2005.

The current lead singer of the band, Arnel Pineda was discovered through a YouTube video of his performance with his former band,  The Zoo. Journey’s  guitarist Neal Schon, was convinced by the lead singer’s sound and recruited him.

Arnel Pineda assumed  Journey’ s job offer to him was a prank so it took him six weeks before he accepted the job.

Former band member, Gregg Rolie quit the band in order to start his family.

Guitarist Neal Schon is the only band member to have never quit the band since its formation. He has played in all fourteen albums of the band to date.

Former lead singer of the band, Steve Perry remains the most loved vocalist of the band even after his departure.

Before becoming a lead vocalist for the group, Steve Perry sang in commercials.

The group’s bassist Randy Jackson (Randall Darius Jackson) became a judge on the famous United States talent show,  American Idol .

Brief Conclusion

Journey  has over the years grown to become one of America’s favorites. For the past 40 active years of this band’s career, they have proven that greatness can be re-lived over and over again even if it is done by a different set of people with the same goal.

As of this writing, the group has remained musically active and is preparing to release more albums and singles following its most previous release in February 2021.

During their initial 14 years of existence (1973-1987), Journey altered their musical approach and their personnel extensively while becoming a top touring and recording band. The only constant factor was guitarist Neal Schon, a music prodigy who had been a member of Santana in 1971-1972. The original unit, which was named in a contest on KSAN-FM in San Francisco, featured Schon, bassist Ross Valory, drummer Prairie Prince (replaced by Aynsley Dunbar), and guitarist George Tickner (who left after the first album). Another former Santana member, keyboard player and singer Gregg Rolie, joined shortly afterward. This lineup recorded Journey (1975), the first of three moderate-selling jazz-rock albums given over largely to instrumentals.

By 1977, however, the group decided it needed a strong vocalist/frontman and hired Steve Perry. The results were immediately felt on the fourth album, Infinity (1978), which sold a million copies within a year. (By this time, Dunbar had been replaced by Steve Smith.) Evolution (1979) was similarly successful, as was Departure (after which Rolie was replaced by Jonathan Cain). Following a live album, Captured (1981), Journey released Escape, which broke them through to the top ranks of pop groups by scoring three Top Ten hit singles, all ballads highlighting Perry's smooth tenor: "Who's Crying Now," "Don't Stop Believin'," and "Open Arms." The album topped the charts and sold millions. Frontiers (1983), featuring the hit "Separate Ways," was another big success, after which Perry released a double-platinum solo album, Street Talk (1984). When the group got back together to make a new album, Valory and Smith were no longer in the lineup and Raised on Radio (1986) was made by Schon, Perry, and Cain, who added other musicians for a tour.

Following the tour, Journey disbanded. Perry went into a prolonged period of seclusion as Schon and Cain formed Bad English with vocalist John Waite. Bad English had several hit singles, including the chart-topper "When I See You Smile," before breaking up. Perry returned to recording in 1994, releasing For the Love of Strange Medicine. Although the album went gold, it was a commercial disappointment by previous standards. In 1996, Perry, Schon, Cain, Valory, and Smith staged a Journey reunion, releasing the million-selling Trial by Fire, which featured the gold-selling Top 20 single "When You Love a Woman," and going on tour. Perry and Smith opted out of the reunion after the tour, but Journey continued, hiring a new lead singer, Steve Augeri (formerly of Tall Stories), and a new drummer, Bad English's Deen Castronovo, who made their debuts on "Remember Me," a track on the 1998 Armageddon soundtrack. The band next reconvened in 2001. Arrival, Journey's 11th new studio album, was released in April, followed by a national tour.

The band received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 21, 2005. That same year they released a new album, Generations, and embarked on their 30th anniversary tour. Shows on the tour stretched over three hours long and were divided into two sets -- one focusing on pre-Escape material, the other on post-Escape material. The archival release Live in Houston 1981: The Escape Tour appeared on both DVD and CD in 2006, the same year that the group brought Jeff Scott Soto aboard as a replacement for Augeri, who developed a throat infection that prevented him from singing.

However, Soto's time with the band was limited; in 2007, Journey announced that they had parted ways with the singer and were once again seeking a frontman. They found him in Arnel Pineda, a Filipino vocalist that they discovered after seeing him perform on YouTube. Pineda made his debut with the band in 2008, the same year that Journey released Revelation. Fueled by the adult contemporary hit "After All These Years," Revelation was a surprise hit that wound up going platinum. Journey returned in the summer of 2011 with Eclipse, a concept album that saw the band tie together its progressive rock beginnings with its '80s arena rock peak.
