The Ballestas Islands are a group of islands located near the city of Pisco , in the department of Ica. They are rocky formations where you can find an important marine fauna such as guano birds. They are located half an hour from the coast of Paracas and one hour from the city of Ica. The Huacachina Lagoon is a large oasis located five kilometers west of the city of Ica , in the middle of the desert, here is a pond popular for its medicinal properties. It is an unmissable place for any traveler.

We will leave from the door of your hotel in Paracas to start our tour.

08:00 am. Beginning of the tour to the Ballestas and Candelabro Islands. We will start our tour where we will be able to appreciate the great variety of marine fauna and flora that exist in these islands.

11:00 hrs. Pisco Route Tour We will go to the city of Ica, where we will be able to do the famous Pisco Route or Ica Wineries Tour. We will go to the following wineries:

Hacienda Tacama: In this hacienda we will be able to know the process of elaboration of the wines of the zone as well as we will be able to taste them. CulturPisco: In this artisan winery we will be able to learn about the process of elaboration of Peruvian Pisco and taste them. Free time for lunch at the traveler’s expense. The wineries Tacama and El Catador offer a great variety of typical dishes of the region and Peru that you can taste.

14:30 hrs. Huacachina – Ica Tour begins.

We head to the Oasis of America, the Huacachina Lagoon, here we will have time to take pictures of the beautiful scenery, you can also use the swimming pool.

16:00 hrs. Tubing Tour in Ica

We will do a tubular tour in the desert of Ica. A unique adventure through the huge sand dunes and we will be able to practice sandboarding. You can take advantage of the scenery to take beautiful pictures.

16:30 pm Transfer to your hotel in Paracas.

08:00 a.m. Ballestas Islands and Candelabra Tour (2 hour tour)

We will start the Full Day Paracas Huacachina with our first Ballestas Islands tour embarking from the port of Chaco Paracas by a speedboat with two outboard motors 200 horsepower each motor,

we will share our boat with other clients, after navigating fifteen minutes through the Bay of Paracas and we will arrive at the candelabra, here our guide will explain the different theories that exist about this enigmatic figure and thus you will know the mysteries of this geoglyph,

then we will sail out to sea for fifteen more minutes until we reach the Ballestas Islands and we will see rock formations a great variety of marine species, sea lions, Humboldt penguins, chuitas, guanays, pelicans, oyster tendrils, thousands of sea birds, then we will arrive at the Maternity of sea lions, then we will return to the port of Chaco Paracas. This tour lasts approximately 2 hours).

Then you will have free time to get to know Paracas Boulevard and the handicrafts fair or have a coffee.

11:00 am. Paracas National Reserve Tour.

We will continue with our trip to Paracas Huacachina Full Day with the pick up in our tourist bus to start the excursion to the impressive Coastal Desert of the Paracas National Reserve, we will take a tour of the Paracas Peninsula observing the colorful reddish desert, yellow, the rock formation called the Cathedral made by the erosion of the wind and the sea, we will meet its beautiful beaches, such as Supay beach, Yumaque beach, Red beach and Lagunillas beach, in this beach they will have free time so they can have lunch since there are restaurants in front of the beach or walk around the beach and take pictures, then we will return to Paracas at approximately 3 p.m.

3:10 p.m.: Transfer from Paracas to the Huacachina Oasis (1 hour and 20 minutes)

16.30 hrs. Arrival Time in Huacachina, you will store your luggage in our office, then we will have a fun afternoon, we will get to know a true Oasis in the desert where palm trees and huarango and eucalyptus trees serve as a refuge for a pleasant rest. From Huacachina we will catch the tour in the desert with Buggy and Sandboarding.

5:00 p.m. Tour dune buggy until the sunset

Will start an amazing ride by the desert with buggies ad sandboarding. We´ll take a four wheel dune buggy to cross the different size dunes around the oasis. It’s going to be an unforgettable experience with the car across the sand, you´ll also have time to take pictures to the buildings all made with sand.

You´ll have the chance to do sandboarding as well, our driver will give you tips and instructions to do the  sandboarding.

Finally, before returning to Huacachina, let’s stop in the top of a dune and you will have an impressive view of the Oasis and make the best photos

Then at 6:30 pm or 7 pm,  you will be transferred to the bus station or to your hotel in  Ica.

People who wish to return to Paracas must make this known at the time of making the reservation and will have to add 10 USD per person for the transfer to Paracas.

If you travel from Lima to Paracas on the same day of the tour, it is recommended to leave with Cruz del Sur transportation www.cruzdelsur.com.pe at 04:00 a.m., this bus arrives in Paracas at 07:25 a.m. Upon arrival we will be waiting for you at the bus station with your name on a sign to then transfer you to our office, to store your luggage and then start the tour.

The buggy tour is not recommended for people who have problems in the spinal column, because the buggy there are moments of strong vibration on the route. You will enjoy getting to know the marine fauna that exists in Paracas and its beautiful landscapes, in Huacachina you will experience an adrenaline-filled adventure in a buggy through the dunes,

Ballestas Islands

Tour description:.

The Ballestas Islands is a vibrant and colorful wildlife sanctuary that is filled with wild birds and mammals, including sea lions, fur seals, and endangered Humboldt penguins. Considered the ‘Peruvian Galapagos’, the tour will allow you to see most of the Ballestas Islands’ marine wildlife. During this two-hour boat tour, you will come face-to-face with these animals in their natural habitation while you are on board a speedboat. On rare occasions, it is even possible to see dolphins and whales. Obviously, this tour is a spectacular choice for animal lovers and birdwatchers.

In addition to the animals named above, a wide range of seabirds also call these rocky islands their home. You may see and hear pelicans, boobies, red-footed Guanay cormorants, and many other types of birds.

Early in the 20th century, the guano (bird droppings) from all these birds was collected and sold as fertilizer. Due to the vast quantities of this valuable substance, this became a major source of revenue for businesses on the coast.

During this tour, you can observe a mysterious geoglyph, similar to the Nazca Lines, that was carved into the face of a cliff over 1,000 years ago. This symbol is called The Candelabra, and it remains the source of much speculation and debate. It likely was created by the Paracas tribe living in the coast at that time, for reasons unknown.

Departure Times & Tour Duration

If you are staying at a hotel in Paracas, or being picked up from the Paracas bus station, your pick-up time will be 7:40 AM. Then your tour will be from 8:00 AM – 10:15 AM.

For those passengers who are being transported from Huacachina or Ica, you will be picked up at your hotel at 6:30 AM. Paracas is one hour north of Huacachina and Ica, so we need to provide enough time to safely arrive without rushing. Your tour will be from 8:00 AM – 10:15 AM. Then we will return to Huacachina by around 12:00 PM.

Useful Suggestions

There are no bathrooms onboard the speedboats in Paracas, so it is important to use the bathroom before your tour starts (bathrooms are available in Paracas) or after your tour finishes.

We recommend wearing sunscreen due to the harshness of the UV light on this part of the continent.

Disfruta de un día lleno de aventura y descubrimientos con nuestro tour a Paracas e Ica. Ofrecemos un emocionante recorrido desde Lima a Paracas empezando por las Islas Ballestas, donde nos sumergiremos en el maravilloso mundo marino que ofrece esta área natural protegida durante las dos horas de recorrido, y admiraremos la figura de “El Candelabro”.

Luego, nos dirigiremos hacia Ica, donde disfrutaremos de un exquisito almuerzo en la vitivinícola “El Catador” y degustaremos las distintas variedades de vinos y piscos de la zona. Después, nos adentraremos en las interminables dunas del desierto de Ica a bordo de los tubulares (buggies) y podrás deslizarte en las tablas de sandboard desde lo más alto. Finalmente, tendrás tiempo libre para pasear por el Oasis de la Huacachina, tomar fotos y comprar artesanías.

En el camino de regreso a Lima, haremos una última parada en el viñedo “Racimo de Uva” en Chincha para degustar los licores producidos en la zona y disfrutar de la música afroperuana. Llegaremos a Lima alrededor de las 10:30 pm.

4:30 - 5:20 am Salida desde los distintos puntos de recojo (Los Olivos/Plaza Norte, San Miguel, San Isidro, Miraflores)

Salida desde los distintos puntos de recojo (Los Olivos/Plaza Norte, San Miguel, San Isidro, Miraflores). Salida rumbo a Paracas, no sin antes detenernos para disfrutar de un delicioso desayuno criollo. Además, puedes comenzar el día con adrenalina haciendo un paseo en Cuatrimoto o Canopy.

Aproximadamente 9:30 am Llegada a Paracas

Una vez que lleguemos a Paracas, nuestra primera parada será el muelle de la marina turística para pasar el punto de control de SERNAMP y esperar para embarcarnos en los deslizadores rumbo a las Islas Ballestas, donde ingresaremos al maravilloso mundo marino por un promedio de 2 horas. Empezamos deteniéndonos en la figura del “El Candelabro” donde el guía nos explicará las diferentes teorías sobre su creación y función. Seguimos navegando con la brisa del mar sobre nosotros hasta llegar a las islas y rodearnos de la abundante vida marina, como grandes colonias de aves guaneras, pingüinos de Humboldt, los simpáticos lobos marinos, delfines, guanayes, piqueros y más. ¡No querrás guardar tu cámara! Finalizado el tour, tendrán tiempo libre para pasear por la Bahía de Paracas que pueden aprovechar para tomarse fotos, comprar artesanías.

Aproximadamente 11:30 - 12:00 pm Oasis de la Huacachina

Viajamos a Ica por un promedio de 1 hora hasta llegar a la vitivinícola “El Catador”. Aquí tendremos nuestro almuerzo y recorreremos la bodega donde tendremos una exquisita degustación de las distintas variedades de vinos y piscos de la zona.

Luego continuamos hacia el Oasis de la Huacachina donde subiremos a los tubulares (buggies) que nos harán recorrer de arriba abajo las interminables dunas del desierto de Ica. También nos deslizaremos con las tablas de sandboard (deslizamiento en tablas) desde lo más alto. Luego tendrás tiempo libre para que paseen por el Oasis, pasear en botes, tomarse fotos y comprar artesanías.

Aproximadamente 5:30 pm Viaje de regreso a Lima

Iniciamos el viaje de retorno a Lima. No sin antes detenernos en el viñedo “Racimo de Uva” en Chincha para degustar los licores que producen en esta zona, disfrutar de su baile y la música afroperuana.

10:00 AM - Iniciamos con el tour a Islas Ballestas. tomaremos un bote deslizador hacia las Islas Ballestas. Durante nuestro recorrido nos detendremos apreciar la misteriosa figura del Candelabro, un impresionante diseño trazado sobre la falda de un cerro en la bahía de Paracas. (Nadie sabe quién hizo esta figura o porque). Una vez que llegamos a las Islas, los visitantes podrán disfrutar de un impresionante escenario de lobos marinos, pingüinos de humboldt y una gran variedad de aves como pelícano, piquero, Guanay, cormorán de patas rojas, gaviotas, zarcillos, etc. Una vez que hayamos visitado todas las islas con nuestro yate retornaremos al muelle de la Marina Turística.

11:45 AM Partida a Ica.

 Llegada al viñedo “El Nieto” donde conoceremos el tradicional proceso para la elaboración de los vinos, cachinas y piscos de Ica, por supuesto también degustaremos de los productos de la bodega.

Llegada al Oasis de Huacachina, aquí disfrutaremos de un paisaje impresionante donde encontraremos la Laguna de Huacachina rodeada de hermosas dunas. Realizaremos un emocionante y divertido paseo en Buggy en el desierto de Huacachina y el sandboarding.

Si no se presenta el día de la salida sin haber anticipado perderás el 100% de tu pago.

En caso de que no se presenten o se presenten tarde a la actividad, su pago no será reembolsado tampoco.

• Proporcionamos traslado Lima – Paracas – Ica – Lima. Su viaje siempre contará con un guía turístico bilingüe para ayudarlo.
• Abordaremos en lancha rápida donde visualizaremos “Candelabro”, continuamos a las Islas Ballestas que nos conducirá a las maravillosas Islas Ballestas, santuario silvestre más importante de la costa peruana, observaran lobos marinos, diferentes aves guaneras, lobos, pelicanos, pingüinos y otros animales marinos.
• En nuestro camino a Huacachina, nos detendremos en un viñedo peruano tradicional de pisco, donde tendrá la oportunidad de participar en una experiencia de degustación, mientras prueba varios pisco y vinos. Mientras esté en el viñedo, nuestro grupo disfrutará de una auténtica comida peruana que está incluida en su paquete.
• Después de nuestra comida, es mejor que te agarres fuerte mientras nos aventuramos en la única Huacachina, un oasis escondido dentro de enormes dunas de arena. Siente la adrenalina mientras corremos por las pistas en nuestros buggies. Una vez en la cima de la duna, tome una tabla de arena y corra por las dunas, ¡una experiencia que nunca olvidará!
• Tenga en cuenta que el puerto de Paracas puede estar cerrado debido a las condiciones climáticas. La decisión la toma la Armada y aplica para todos los operadores turísticos y agencias de viajes. Si el puerto está cerrado, no se preocupe, ¡tenemos un plan de respaldo! Visitaremos la Reserva Nacional de Paracas.
• El Dune Buggy and Sandboarding Tour se considera una experiencia de adrenalina/extrema. Puede sentirse como si estuviera montando en una montaña rusa mientras corre por las dunas. Tenga esto en cuenta y, para aquellos que prefieren un viaje tranquilo, infórmenos con anticipación.
• No tenemos control sobre la Madre Naturaleza, la mayoría de los días en Huacachina son hermosos y soleados. Sin embargo, es posible tener días nublados sin puesta de sol.
• Los participantes tendrán tiempo para comprar refrigerios o un pequeño desayuno en Paracas.
• Los participantes pueden reservar la cena para llevar una vez que lleguen a Huacachina y recogerla antes de regresar a Lima.
• Los participantes deben escalar una pequeña duna para llegar a los buggys.
• Tour se brindan en modo compartido.
• Cualquier perdida material o accidente, es bajo la responsabilidad del cliente.

Huacachina significa ‘ mujer que llora ‘ en quechua. Cuenta la leyenda que esta laguna nace de las lágrimas de una hermosa mujer de ojos verdes , que lloraba la muerte de su amado.

Pues la laguna está llena de vida: desde sus palmeras y huarangos, hasta las aves que descansan en sus aguas, sus peces y las discretas criaturas de las dunas que la rodean. Cuenta con una biodiversidad riquísima y ahora protegida, al declararse la Huacachina y el desierto subtropical a su alrededor como Área de Conservación Regional.

LAGUNA DE HUACACHINA

La laguna de Huacachina es un oasis ubicado a cinco kilómetros al oeste de la ciudad de Ica, en medio del desierto costero del Pacífico. De aguas color verde esmeralda , surgió debido al afloramiento de corrientes subterráneas.

Alrededor de ella hay una abundante vegetación compuesta de palmeras, eucaliptos (especies introducidas) y la especie de algarrobo conocida como huarango, la que sirve para el descanso de las aves migratorias que pasan por esta región.

Todo ello contribuye a hacer de Huacachina uno de los lugares más vistosos y bellos de la costa peruana.

How to get to the Ballestas Islands

The Ballestas Islands are a group of rocky islands located off the coastal town of Paracas . The only way to visit the islands is to take a speedboat tour from the town.

There are many local companies that sell their tours in Paracas. These are usually at inflated prices and are not guaranteed to have safe boats or licensed drivers. Avoid the hassle and book in advance !

Paracas is a beautiful fishing town just 3 hours south of Lima . Nestled along the sandy streets are dainty cafes and restaurants serving up fresh fish and killer Pisco sours. Head south for the day, spend the night, or stay on board to experience Huacachina, only a short distance away.

You have 2 options to get to Paracas:

• Peru Hop bus

There are many public bus companies operating the Lima to Paracas route. The only problem is the headache you will have trying to compare prices and after you choose one, having to find the companies terminal since there is no central bus terminal.

Peru Hop busses offer a comfortable and safe trip, with free pickups and drop-offs. There are also included stops and tours on the way to Paracas which will make your trip much better! Make sure to check out the bus passes and decide which adventure best suits you!

Important Note: The duration of this tour is shortened to 1 hour 30 minutes during holiday periods (e.g. Easter weekend, end of July), with no change in price.

Whether you start the adventure at 08:00 am or 10:00 am, this 2-hour tour will take you out to the amazing Ballestas Islands that are located off the coast of Paracas.

20 minutes out from the bay of Paracas you will reach El Candelabro , an immense geoglyph similar to those of the Nazca Lines. Your guide will talk about the different theories of the creation of the figure while giving you time to take pictures.

From there, the tour will continue for another 15 minutes until reaching the famous Ballestas Islands. These islands are a group of rock formations, caves, and arches that have eroded over time, providing shelter to thousands of seabirds, sea lions, and hundreds of other species.

You will pass through one of the caves known as the maternity beach for sea lions. Here you will be able to see baby sea lions splashing and playing around with their mothers, or basking in the sun’s rays.

You will also be witness other animals up close, like penguins, pelicans, guanos, and chiquitas, all in their natural habitat!

During the tour, your guide will explain about each of the different species seen, and you will have an opportunity to take some amazing photos from up close.

After approximately 1 hour, the speed boat will start making its way back to the port of Paracas.

Did you know?

• The Ballestas Islands are home to the endangered Humboldt penguin.
• Sea lion breeding season is between January and March. During these months you will see the beaches full of sea lion cubs and huge rival males defending their mating territories.
• Keep your eye out for “The Candelabro”, a huge geoglyph in the form of a candlestick (or is it a cactus?) found on the northern face of the Paracas peninsula. Sailors used this for hundreds of years as a coastal reference point.
• If you take the Peru Hop bus at 06:00 am from Lima, you have time to do the 10:00 am tour of the Ballestas Islands and continue to Huacachina the same day.
• Humpback Whales are frequently spotted in these waters between August and October as they move north for mating season.
• Nicknamed “Peru’s Galapagos”, the islands are a must-see for all wildlife lovers as they’re home to thousands of birds and mammals including penguins, sea lions, Inca terns, pelicans and dolphins.
• The islands, locally known as Las Islas Ballestas, are protected, meaning you cannot swim with the animals or walk on the islands themselves, but you can get very close to them on a boat tour.

What to bring to the Ballestas Islands?

Due to increasing winds during the course of the day, the tours only depart in the mornings at 08:00 am and 10:00 am, every day of the week. So be sure to wrap up if you are on the 10:00 am tour and tie that hair back to avoid missing the beautiful views!

Ballestas FAQ's

I am planning to follow your recommended minimum schedule leaving on one of the 07:00 am departures from Lima. Spending the first night in Paracas do I have time to do the Ballestas Island Tour, go on the free National Reserve Tour and still catch the bus leaving for Huacachina at 1:00 pm on the second day?

Yes, our buses are programmed to allow you to visit the Ballestas Islands (08:00 am – 10:00 am), the Paracas National Reserve (depart 11:00 am) and still leave for Huacachina at 1:00 pm to arrive in time for sandboarding at sunset!

I do not feel well and wish to cancel my tour for the next morning. Will I get a refund?

Peru Hop does not operate the Ballestas Islands trip. The tour provider allows changes up to 6:00 pm the day before at no cost. Cancellations or missed tours will be charged the full fee.

I woke up late and missed my tour. Can I change it for tomorrow?

Unfortunately, the operator of the Ballestas Island will charge fully for any NO SHOW or missed tours not previously changed before 6:00 pm the day before. If you would like to book the tour again for the next day then this is possible, but you will have to pay a second time.

Are there pick ups?

No, we meet at Frayles Residencial Hotel. Paracas is a tiny village, just a couple of hundred meters long and Frayles Residencial Hotel is very centrally located.

Is it possible to walk on the islands or to go swimming?

The islands are protected, meaning you cannot swim with the animals or walk on the islands themselves, but you will get very close to them by boat. A unique experience for those that will not make it to the Galapagos.
