Get a hearty dose of adventure on this day long 4WD tour of Fraser Island . Throughout the day, you’ll experience the stunning landscapes of the island and get to know the world’s largest sandbank. Stretching over 120 kms and offering sweeping views of the coast, Fraser Island is home to ancient rainforest , pristine beaches and iconic Aussie wildlife like Dingoes and Humpback Whales.

We’ll start the day from Rainbow Beach, heading towards Fraser Island through the Toolara State Forest. We’ll make a quick stop in Rainbow Beach centre before heading over to Fraser Island via the barge at Inskip Point.

Once we’ve arrived at Fraser Island, we’ll travel along the rugged coastal road of Seventy-Five Mile Beach . If you’re lucky, we may even get the chance to spot some wild dingoes on the way! Enjoy morning tea before exploring the lush expanse of rainforest and iconic wildlife that sprawls out towards the centre of this renowned island.

Then it’s onwards to the perched lake of Lake McKenzie , where we’ll stop to admire the clear blue water, white sand and surrounding rainforest that sprawl inland. Here we’ll set up to have an authentic Aussie lunch to get energy up for the adventure ahead, while enjoying the stunning surrounding scenery. Take a dip in the crystal clear waters or laze on the snow-white sand and take in the impressive surroundings.

After we’ve refuelled, we’ll travel along ‘sandy highway’ to take you along the lush rainforest of Satinay and Brushbox for a guided rainforest walk. If you’re looking for a sustainable, interesting and very fun experience, I can truly recommend booking the 3 day tour with K’Gari Adventures! Most people who go and visit K’gari would probably absolutely love it but what I loved about this tour was our tour leader Mark and his clear passion and excitement about the island. With his history, stories and love for this island, it would be hard not to fall in love with this place and want to come back again (which I desperately do!) The food was great, the accommodation was clean and nice and the tour gave you just enough time in each place to enjoy it but also you visited so many different areas. Embark on an exciting day trip and experience a great value tour of World Heritage listed Fraser Island!

Your adventure begins as we depart from Noosa and make our way to Fraser Island (K’gari) via ferry. Then, we will head north along the 75 Mile Beach. This long stretch of beach is the perfect way to drive right along the shoreline and breathe in some fresh ocean air. We will follow the sand track towards the forest.

We will then stop at Lake McKenzie or Lake Birrabeen for some time to unwind and take a dip in the turquoise waters. You will have some time to refuel after a busy morning, with an Aussie style picnic lunch. Cheers to an exciting day with complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks.

The afternoon will continue with a rainforest walk at Wanggoolba Creek before embarking on a relaxing float down Eli Creek. The final stop of the day includes the Maheno Shipwreck. We will then jump back onto the ferry and head to the mainland. You can expect to be back in Noosa around 5:30.

What to bring: You’ll wantto have a day-pack ready to explore K’gari (Fraser Island). K'gari (Fraser Island) Day Tour Itinerary

Make the most of the day with an early start from noosa (pick-ups from 5:20 am). drive 1.5 hours north at the sleepy coastal town of rainbow beach. after checking that everyone has what they need for the day, it’s a short drive to meet our ferry at inskip point. pay attention; the short cruise is a great opportunity to spot dolphins, dugongs, and other marine life before reaching the world heritage-listed k’gari (fraser island)..

We head North along the island’s ‘Beach Highway’, 75 Mile Beach. We spend time at the un-missable Eli Creek, then travel along the coastline to the SS Maheno Shipwreck. After learning about the shipwreck’s colourful past, we head inland, meandering along some of the many tracks before arriving at Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie). Take your time to chill out or have a swim in the refreshing, crystal-clear waters. This is one of Australia's most stunning and photographed locations.

It's time to head to the old logging headquarters at Central Station, where your guide will provide some information about the logging history, towering rainforests, and the special silent waters of Wanggoolba Creek. Take the optional 1.8km walk through the rainforest along the creek and meet the guide at Pile Valley. From Pile Valley, we let the vehicle do all the work as we drive back out to the Eastern Beach along 75 Mile Beach to catch the ferry. We arrive at Noosa around 7:00 pm.

The tides may impact the times that the ferry arrives and departs K’gari (Fraser Island), so that may also impact the length of the time you spend at each of the attractions listed in the itinerary above. The order of destinations may also be affected by the tides. Your guide will advise you on the day of travel.

We recognize that many of our passengers think like us and want a World Heritage-listed destination to remain beautiful for generations to come. Discovery K'gari Adventures has recently committed to providing a third bin, which will be used to collect rubbish and debris found on the beach and walking trails.

You may encounter some debris or rubbish during one of the many short walks. We encourage you to collect this rubbish, carry it with you until you return to the vehicle and place it in our bin. We can all make a difference!

They are both amazing places to visit in Australia but offer a very different experience.

Visiting Fraser Island is a popular day trip from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach but it’s also one of the best day trips from Noosa.

In this article, we tell you everything you need to know to plan the perfect day trip to K’Gari from Noosa.

Where is Fraser Island and why is it a good day trip from Noosa?

Fraser Island is located 150 km from Noosa Heads. It takes about 2h30 to get there.

Going on a day trip from Noosa to Fraser Island is entirely doable, however, let’s be honest, it will be a bit of a tiring day. Especially if you are driving yourself!

How to get to Fraser Island from Noosa

First things first, let’s set the basics. Fraser Island is entirely made of sand which means you must have a 4WD vehicle to get around the island.

You won’t be allowed to even get on the ferry without a 4WD.

Self-driving and ferry

LOOKING FOR THE BEST 4WD CAR RENTALS IN NOOSA?

Check out the Discover Car Website and filter on 4×4 vehicles.

If you own a 4WD, you can take it to Fraser Island however you must get a permit for Fraser. It costs $53.65 for up to a month. You can buy it on the official website .

If you don’t have your own 4WD, you can rent one from Noosa.

To do this, go to Discover Cars website and search for your dates (please note that you might have to rent the vehicle the day before departure since a lot of car rental places in Noosa don’t open too early).

Once you get the results, make sure to filter on the 4×4 option and you can pick one of the vehicle then.

Please note, even with a rental, you still need to get your permit!

From Noosa, drive up to Rainbow Beach and head to Inskip Point. There, you will find the Manta Ray Fraser Island Barges which is the ferry to Fraser Island.

Make sure to pop by the office first to buy your ticket. If you are visiting during the high season, you can also give them a ring beforehand at +61 7 5486 3935.

The ferry service operates from 6.00 am to 5.15 pm.

The return ticket to Fraser Island costs $130 for a 4WD and its passengers. It’s a bit more expensive if you have a trailer but if you are only coming for a day, you shouldn’t have one.

The ferry ride lasts 15 minutes. You will arrive at the Southern end of Fraser Island. From there, you can head north and start exploring!

Fraser Island Tours from Noosa

If you don’t have a 4WD and want to go to Fraser Island from Noosa for a day trip, you can also opt for a day tour from Rainbow Beach.

Although self-driving gives you more freedom, it’s also a lot of hassle and money. It will cost you at least $250 and that’s if you have your own car. Driving on Fraser Island can also be tricky and risky.

Opting for a Fraser Island tour from Noosa is way easier. The tour company will organise everything for you. The only thing you have to do is having fun!

If you are travelling on your own (or 2 people) it will also work out way cheaper.

The only inconvenient thing is that the tour doesn’t start in Noosa but in Rainbow Beach. This means you will need to drive to Rainbow Beach (which takes about 1 hour) or arrange a transfer.

Once you get there though, everything for the day will be included.

Ferry, petrol, lunch… everything!

The K’gari Fraser Island Full-Day Coach Tour is ideal.

You will be meeting in Rainbow Beach and hop on a 4WD minibus. You’ll travel all the way up through the Great Sandy national park to Inskip Point where you will take the ferry to Fraser Island.

Once on Fraser Island, you will visit Lake McKenzie and Central Station. On the way back, you will also be dropped off in Rainbow Beach.

Meals are included. Your driver will cook you an authentic Aussie barbecue on the island!

Fraser Island one day itinerary from Noosa

Fraser Island is a bigger island that it seems so one day is not that much to explore however, you can still get to see some of the most beautiful places on Fraser Island.

Here is how to plan your day.

7 am: Start driving from Noosa to Inskip Point

We recommend an early start if you want to make the best of your K’Gari day trip from Noosa.

For that, you should be leaving at 7AM (or even before). If you’ve opted for the day tour from Rainbow Beach, it will take you about 1 hour and 20 minutes to get to the meeting point.

If you chosen to hire a 4WD, it will take you about 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to Inskip Point where you can take the ferry.

9 am: Take the ferry from Inskip Point to Fraser Island

The ferry to K’Gari operates from 6AM to 5PM so you can easily get one at around 9AM (or before if you are an early bird).

Make sure to contact the ticketing office first to get your tickets and permits.

Once you arrive, the ferries are every 30 minutes and it only takes 10 minutes to cross.

9:15 am: You arrive on Fraser Island and start driving to Lake McKenzie

You will arrive on K’Gari in the southern part of the island, at Hook Point. From there, you can take the Fraser Island Beach track and start heading north to Eurong.

Eurong is the main town on Fraser Island and where you can find the resorts.

From there, you will start driving inland to go to Boorangoora (Lake MacKenzie). Altogether, it takes about 2 hours to get there.

11:30 am: You arrive at Lake McKenzie

Once you arrive at the lake, you will find a large carpark where you can leave your vehicle. Park your car and start walking down to Lake McKenzie.

It takes about 15 minutes to walk down to Lake McKenzie but once you get there, there won’t be any amenities so make sure you take everything you need.

💡 PRO TIP: There are toilets in the car park, make use of them while you’re there.

Once at Lake McKenzie, you can go for a swim and relax on the beach for a couple of hours.

The water is absolutely stunning. It’s so blue, you won’t believe it! It’s a great spot to take beautiful photos so don’t forget your camera.

If you have a GoPro , it will be even better!

Also, since the sand is so soft, you can use it to do a natural scrub on your legs. Simply take the sand in your hands and scrub your legs.

1 pm: Go back to the car park for lunch

While we know it can be tempting to take a picnic to the beach, you should not be taking any food to the lake as it can attract dingoes so make sure to leave any food in the car and eat at the picnic area.

The idea of having a picnic by a car park might not be the most appealing thing but it’s actually a nice place and there is a lot of shade.

Alternatively, you can stop on the beach later and eat there.

1:30 pm: Start driving to Central Station

Central Station is an area of the rainforest on K’Gari where you can find beautiful walks along the river.

It’s about 20 minutes drive from Lake McKenzie.

1:50 pm: You arrive at Central Station

Once you arrive at Central Station, park your vehicle near the campsite.

You can then start walking along the boardwalk to discover the creek and the beautiful strangling trees.

This part is way better with a tour guide I must say. If you’ve opted for the tour from Rainbow Beach , your guide will give you loads of facts about Fraser Island. It’s very interesting.

💡 INTERESTING FACT: Central Station was a sacred site for the aboriginal communities. It was a sanctuary where women would birth their babies.

It’s such a peaceful place, you will love it.

2:50 pm: Start driving back to the ferry

Once you’re done with the walk at Central Station, it will be time to head back to the ferry. Don’t forget, the last ferry to Inskip point is at 5PM so it’s very important you make it on time.

It takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes to get there so you shouldn’t leave any later than 2:50 PM.

5 pm: Take the ferry to Inskip Point

Once you get to Hook Point, take the ferry back to Inskip Point. The crossing lasts 10 minutes but you should be there a bit early to check in.

7 pm: You are back in Noosa

From Inskip Point, it takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes to get back to Noosa so you should be there around 7 PM.

It will usually be early enough to return your car but if you want to be on the safe side, make sure to extend the booking until the morning after.

It will also potentially give you the opportunity to do another great day trip from Noosa.

💡 PRO TIP: If you are not too tired, you can also stop in Rainbow Beach on your way back. It’s a very pretty area and it’s worth checking out.

What to wear on a day trip from Noosa

When going on a day trip from Noosa to Fraser Island, make sure you pack the following items:

• Comfortable shoes (you will be walking at Central station)

• Eco-friendly sunscreen (Lake McKenzie does not drain so please don’t apply sunscreen before swimming)

Absolutely! Fraser Island is about 2 hours from Noosa which means that you can do a day trip to K’Gari from Noosa. However, it’s important to note that it will be a packed day.

We highly recommend opting for a tour to make this day more optimised. Unfortunately, you can’t book a Noosa to Fraser island tour but you can from Rainbow Beach.

How far is Fraser island from Noosa?

Fraser Island is located 150 km from Noosa Heads. It takes about 2h30 to get there. The drive from Noosa to Inskip Point (where the ferry is) takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. The crossing on the ferry is 10 minutes long.

Can you do a Sunshine Coast to Fraser island day trip?

Technically yes but it’s important to note that it will take about 3 hours to get from Sunshine Coast to Fraser Island so it’s preferable to go for a couple of days if you really want to see what Fraser Island has to offer.

Where is the ferry from Noosa to Fraser island?

There is no ferry from Noosa but you can still go to Fraser Island from there. You simply need to drive from Noosa to Inskip Point (1h45) and take the ferry from there (10-minute crossing).

What is the best way to go from Noosa heads to Fraser island?

If you have a 4WD, you can drive from Noosa Heads to Inskip Point (1h45) and take the ferry to Hook Point from there.

Estimated Departure times: Our price includes free courtesy pickup service from most hotels and apartments in Noosa.  We are unable to offer a courtesy pickup service south of Noosa.  If staying south of Noosa, you would need to meet the tour at Noosa Marina , 2 Parkyn Court, Tewantin at 5.55am.  Free all day parking.  Tour departs at 6am from Noosa and 7.30am from Rainbow Beach.  Return time is approx. 3.30pm to Rainbow Beach and 5pm to Noosa.  Also inclusive – ferry transfers, National Parks’ fees, morning and afternoon teas and a delicious “Aussie Style” bush picnic with complimentary beers, wine and soft drinks.

Please note this tour may not be suitable if you have existing neck or back problems or are pregnant. Check with your agent to make sure this tour is suitable for you. 

Your Responsibilities:

Please advise us before booking if any passengers are under 18 years old to ensure this is the appropriate trip. 

You must reconfirm all booked tours prior to travel as specified on your voucher. If applicable, notes such as dietary requirements, pick-up locations and additional fees should also be confirmed at this time. Reconfirmations cannot be actioned through Fraser Tours / Mr Travel, and must be done so directly through the Service Operator as specified on each ticket.

It is your responsibility to notify us of ticket discrepancies. Please read through the details on your voucher thoroughly to ensure all details such as passenger names, ages and dates of travel on vouchers are correct.

It is the responsibility of all passengers travelling to advise both your travel agent at the time of booking and vessel check-in agent before boarding of any medical conditions including food allergies you may suffer from.

You need to allow adequate time to check-in prior to the specified departure time. 

Prices/Extra Costs:

All prices are stated in Australian dollars and include GST. Surcharges over peak holiday seasons may apply. 

The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices and extra costs. Extra costs may include EMC fees, Stingersuit/Wetsuit Hire, Luggage Storage, Insurance, Linen Hire, National Park Fees, Fuel Levies, Dietary Fees, etc. Bonds may also apply.

We will also endeavour to communicate these extra costs with you at the time of booking, and on your ticket. However, it is your responsibility to confirm which (if any) additional costs apply with each Service Operator upon reconfirming your trip.

Travel Risk/Insurance:

It should be noted that adventure travel involves risk. Whilst we make every effort to safeguard clients, we cannot be responsible for personal injury or loss due to the actions of our clients which are beyond our control. All departures and itineraries are subject to weather. Tours may be changed or cancelled for any reason at the discretion of the Tour Operator. We highly recommend that all clients have travel insurance covering illness, injury, loss or damage to personal belongings and not being able to travel on the confirmed date of departure. You should also ensure your travel insurance will cover special circumstances including weather events preventing guests from travelling to their tour departure destination and cancelled flights due to unforeseen circumstances. 

Merchant Fees:

Please be aware operators pass on credit card merchant fees so there is a non-refundable 1% surcharge for VISA and MASTERCARD card purchases.

All ticket/voucher reissues attract a $20 administration fee.

Open Date Vouchers / Gift Certificate:

Shipping Costs are in addition to the ticket price and will be added at check-out. Shipping costs are non-refundable and do not makeup part of the ticket value. 

E-Vouchers incur no shipping fees. You have 5 years to use the value of the voucher. Seasonal Price Rises will apply if travelling out the current seasons pricing. Vouchers can be exchanged for free up to the full value of the voucher excluding credit card fees and charges.

Cancellations

Client Cancellations:

All cancellations forfeit 25% of the recommended retail price (RRP) - not the discounted/sale price. No shows or client cancellations made within 72 hours of departure forfeit 100% of the total ticket price. 

Transfers between tours can be made at the suppliers discretion, however, it should be noted that supplier fees may apply. Tour transfers also incur a $20 administration fee. 

It is compulsory that all cancellation requests are in writing and sent via email to [email protected]. Cancellations attempted via online chat or phone will not be actioned.

Supplier Cancellations:

The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices, alter itineraries, apply a fuel surcharge, cancel departures, arrange alternative transport and vary itineraries and services if necessary.

All departures and itineraries are subject to weather. Tours may be changed or cancelled for any reason at the discretion of the Service Operator. If the Service Operator has to cancel the trip or activity (prior to departure) and we cannot offer a suitable alternative, then a refund will be given minus a 20% administration fee and any associated card fees. We strongly recommend that you have travel insurance, especially during the wet season.

In the unlikely event of your trip being cancelled or stood down, all guest communication is required to go through our Online Store via telephone or email. While there is a Sailing Whitsundays retail outlet located Airlie Beach, please be aware that they operate as a separate entity and are unable to access reservations made by the Mr Travel online department.

All refunds are in Australian Dollars and must be made to the card of payment. Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel is not liable for exchange rate fluctuations or fees, or any other merchant/bank fees associated with domestic and/or international transactions.

Where a full refund is applicable, there is the option to transfer the whole cost of the tour to another tour or “Credit” to avoid the administration fee. A transfer fee of $20 will apply.

You will be emailed confirmation once the refund has been processed. Once the refund has been processed, it may still take time for the banks to clear the amount. Please allow 7-10 business days for the funds to clear into Australian accounts and up to 21 business days for international accounts.

Accountability/Misconduct:

All Service Operators have the right to provide client feedback and to cancel bookings based off of feedback from other Service Operators.
