Lyon is for Lovers

Lyon, the beautiful city on a hill. Historic neighborhoods such as Fourvière Hill & Presqu’île earned it the honor of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. It’s known as the gastronomical capital of France (and among select crowds, of the world). Lyon is home to great chefs such as Paul Bocuse, or Mère Brazier, one of the woman attributed with the creation of the bouchon, a classic café in Lyon. This stunning city is also know for silk creation and the silk trade. Tucked away in Old Lyon you will still find silk ateliers, and the city celebrates this heritage through an annual silk festival. Lyon is bursting with themes, history, and neighborhoods to explore.

Among these neighborhoods, or arrondissements as the French call them, you will find hospitable bistros serving classic coq au vin, or for the daring, andouillette. Explore Vieux Lyon and discover the Renaissance. The Saint John the Baptist Cathedral sits near the edge of the Saône river, a beautiful 14th century structure waiting to be explored. A bit higher up you will find the famous Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourvière. Those who make it here are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the city below.

Lyon being the third largest city in France enjoys relative popularity along with a laid-back lifestyle. It’s proximity to Paris and the south make it the perfect stop-over for those enjoying a full French holiday.

Allow us to help you explore this beautiful city with the help of our state-of-the-art e-bikes. Our pedal-assist electric bikes make it easy to tackle the hills and long stretches of bike paths that make Lyon unique. Our Lyon Bike Tour includes the must-see areas of the city along with the local knowledge of our excellent guides. See and experience Lyon by bike, and work up an appetite for all of the delicious French cuisine that awaits you!

Via Rhona | Geneva - Lyon

  • Tour description
  • Travel information

This is an exciting bike tour along the Rhone River that France-Bike, your partner for high quality bike vacation in France has created for you. When conjuring up images of the Rhone valley, the first thing that comes to mind is that of lush green vineyards nestled into rolling hills, secretive Alpine forests on the banks of crystal clear mirror lakes, small traditional French villages with the scent of fresh local cheeses and wines and stories of bandits hidden amongst the fortified castle walls. However, it's not just an imaginary image, this is the Rhone. Whilst leisurely gliding beside the river at your own relaxed pace, you will have the time to be engulfed in nature and deafened by the silence against the incredible backdrop of the Alps, enjoying it all on quiet, easy-going cycle lines. The river itself is the most important part of the area as it not only provides the environment's lushness that will take your breath away, but is historically important for tradesmen. Vincent Van Gogh even took the time to paint it. You will also enjoy many family activities on your cycle trip, as you meet local farmers and wine producers, visit the beautiful and important castles, churches and caves, and learn about the local history from the Bronze Age to Roman ruins, from the Dukes of Savoy to local bandits and highwaymen, before taking part in water sports, or picnicking on the river banks. Activities perfect for you and your family. In the evenings you will enjoy a peaceful meal of only the juiciest, plumpest local produce. The accommodation is just as special, traditional cozy French character whose proud patrons passionately work with the environment to support their valley in staying green. Something you will also be contributing to on your pollution-free bicycles. As you daydream along the beautiful green and colorful floral surroundings, you will hardly believe that such a beautiful part of France is harmoniously nestled between the two dynamic and innovative cities of Geneva and Lyon where you will begin and end your trip. Both cities are modern and exciting and bursting with culture and history and you wander the fascinating old quarters.

Day 1: Arrival in Geneva After checking into your hotel, you may spend your first day strolling around the beautiful Geneva Lake, one of the largest lakes in Western Europe with incredible surrounding scenery. Despite being a lively and one of the most important European cities, Geneva can also offer you an afternoon of tranquility in its Botanical Gardens, renowned for its botanical conservation. Stroll through the rock gardens and greenhouses which house species from all over the world before taking a sunset cruise on the lake. Day 2: Geneva > Seyssel, ~61 km During breakfast, you will be met by our guide at your hotel, at 9am, who will brief you on your itinerary and give you all the necessary equipment for your trip. The highlights of your route include cycling along the infamous Rhone River, admiring the heart-warming views over the charming wine-making villages of Dardagny and Satigny, and frolicking around intimidating forts. Conquer the westernmost point of Switzerland by bike at the village of Chancy and then cross the border into France. Unmissable here is the Fort de l’Ecluse, founded by a Duke of Savoy, which is an elevated fort, built out of a striking rock formation and a natural entrance of the Rhone Valley into France between the Vauche hills and the Jura. Your home for the night is in Seyssel, a small “double-town” in both the Haut-Savoie (Upper Savoy) and the Ain departments on the Rhone River located between two dams. Day 3: Seyssel > Champagneux, ~52 or 76 km En route to your daily destination, you can enjoy lunch by the Canal de Savieres in the chocolate-box village of Chanaz, nicknamed the Little Venice of Savoie, or you can enjoy a short cruise along the canal, ending up at the Lac du Bourget, France's largest and deepest lake surrounded by mountains, before heading back to Chanaz and continuing on your trip. Finally, you will arrive in Belley, a Roman town where you can try its famous homemade cheeses with names that sound as lush as the forests. Day 4: Champagneux > Pérouges, ~68 km or 88 km Make a stop in the village of Saint Genix sur Guiers, where you can discover the legend of the bandit Captain Louis Mandrin, the French version Robin Hood, who waged war on the unpopular Farmers General tax collectors and gained support from the local people in the region. Then you ride on to the small community of Balme-les-Grottes, with its fantastic underground grottoes where you will be enchanted by the site which has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The caves were used as a sacrificial altar and later made into a chapel by Francois I. You will find a lake, several pools, rock formations, a 35 meter high porch and a dinosaur exhibition. You will later visit the historically rich village of Vertrieu and see its 12th Century fortified house, and imagine that you too, were one of its guardsmen watching the boatmen bringing stone along the river to Lyon. You will also visit the stunning 18th Century castle settled on the banks of the Rhone. Day 5: Pérouges > Lyon, ~43 or 59 km After your final day of cycling, you will finish your trip in the great city of Lyon, a UNESCO world heritage site since 1998, once famed for silk weaving. Here you can stop at the Parc de la Tete d'Or (The Golden Head Park), which is France's largest urban park and whose zoo you can visit. Later, take the cable car ride up to visit the Notre-Dame de Fourviere basilica on the hill, with spectacular views of the city. Then walk down to see the medieval cathedral and thriving old town. Day 6: Departure from Lyon or extra nights Individual departure after breakfast. There are many trains from Lyon back to Geneva.

Lake Geneva, one of the largest lakes in Europe Geneva: the old town, the cathedral and the Bastions Park Seyssel, one of the oldest towns in the Rhône valley The vineyards of Savoie Bugey and the local gastronomy The fortified city of Pérouges, ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France Lyon, the city of two hills, famous for its gastronomy

From Lake Geneva to Lyon by bike via the ViaRhôna

Enjoy a great week cycling through the valleys of the alps and the bugey. the viarhôna offers a route in the middle of nature offering lakes, waterfalls, forests ... the vineyards and the local gastronomy guarantee great moments of conviviality after the effort..

The great ViaRhôna cycling route takes you on a trip through history. A medium of exchange for millennia, numerous traces of civilizations are present on its shores and represent a very rich historical and religious heritage. The Larina archaeological site , a vast rural domain from the end of Antiquity and the site of the Colombier dating from the Neolithic era are the witnesses that justify the name of River of Civilizations given to the Rhône.

Departing from Geneva and Lake Geneva , let yourself be seduced by this city for an afternoon. The old town , the cathedral or the Bastions Park contribute to the many charms of the watchmaking town. On the side of nature it’s also the gateway to the Alps . It offers sumptuous panoramas on Mont-Blanc and Lake Geneva . On the lake, you find cruises that take you on a discovery of flora and fauna to extend your stay in the city.

By bike along the Rhône river you ride peacefully through the snow-capped peaks of the Alps , passing in particular at the foot of the Grand Colombier pass, made famous by the Tour de France. In a landscape of small mountains, forests and meadows emerge the vineyards of Savoie Bugey . Take the opportunity to stop at a wine estate for a tasting!

The villages you pass through have retained their authenticity. Let yourself be seduced by the charm of Seyssel, a major place of navigation since antiquity, and of Chanaz nicknamed the little Venice of Savoy because of the presence of the Savière canal.

The Bugey region has many farmers present in the markets , where fragrant and colorful stalls await you. Stop to taste the Bresse poultry , the quenelles with Nantua sauce or the famous cheeses such as Morbier , Comté or Bleu de Gex . The terroir of the Rhône valley is full of gastronomic treasures just waiting to be devoured!

During this cycling trip on the ViaRhôna , we offer you a detour through Pérouges . This village , fortified by its double-walled wall, hides superb medieval architecture . During an evening stroll, you can notice the uneven pebbles covering the soils of the Dombes. Its cobbled streets and half-timbered houses adorned with mullioned windows offer a real historical immersion . Formerly a city of weavers, today it has become a landmark for merchants and artisans.

Cycling ViaRhôna - From Geneva to Lyon

You will cycle through a hilly area, you will encounter regularly inclinesr and sometimes a tough climb where you get off. It is also possible that the daily distances are sometimes a bit longer. Some cycling experience uphill is desirable, even when cycling with an e-bike. The daily distance span from 30 to 75 km.

The terrain is slightly hilly. You will encounter a short incline from time to time or maybe one or two heavy stages. With an e-bike and some cycling experience you should easily be able to handle this level. Daily distances span 50-75 km.

Nature

Level 1 Easy Our easiest trips. Well suited for beginners, seniors and families, who are looking for a relaxed cycling event. Flat routes with sometimes a gentle slope. Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous  For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event.  Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.

Arrive in Geneva and settle in at your hotel. Take the time to discover this beautiful Swiss city, known as the "capital of peace" with its humanitarian traditions, it will seduce you with its international charm and its old town offering a wide choice of delicious restaurants. Enjoy a pleasant stroll along banks of Lake Geneva.

Your first bike ride takes you from Switzerland to France along the Rhone, you will discover the "Défilé de l'Écluse" and then the first vineyards between mountains and valleys, while keeping in view the sumptuous mountains of the Alps. This part of the trip will be on busier roads, but the rest of the week it will be much quieter. You will spend the night in the charming little town of Seyssel, on the banks of the river.

You also have the possibility to take the train to Seyssel and start your bike trip the day after if you want to avoid this first stage with busy roads!

Challenge: 59.9km, 677m ascent, 804m descent

Leave Seyssel and cycle between ridges and plateau on both banks of the Rhone. Arrival in Chanaz, also called "La Petite Venise Savoyarde", enjoy a pleasant break in one of the charming restaurants along the canal of Savières. Continue on towards Culoz and Belley, peaceful small towns with a rich heritage that punctuate the Bugey mountain range. Continue your journey, through beautiful natural surroundings to arrive in the region of Champagneux.

Challenge: 54.5km, 528m ascent, 539m descent

Today you pass through Saint-Genix-sur-Guiers, for the ‘gourmets’, we advise you to stop to taste the famous brioche pralines! Further on, a little detour to the village of Glandieu will allow you to refresh yourself by its majestic waterfall, a wonder of nature. Next you will arrive in Morestel, stroll through the narrow streets of the old town, the city of artists, and maybe visit one of the art galleries. A lovely greenway links "La Vallée Bleue" to Villebois, which is where you’ll stay overnight.

Challenge: 66.3km, 628m ascent, 635m descent

This ViaRhôna stage takes you through the unspoilt countryside of Burgey above the Rhône. You pass lovely villages this morning : Saint-Sorlin-en-Bugey and Sault-Brénaz, and the more secretive La Balme-les-Grottes, with its great caves and picturesque centre. Your destination will soon be in sight as you approach the hilltop medieval village of Pérouges, labeled one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Challenge: 55.4km, 444m ascent, 418m descent

This last cycle day cleverly links the parks and lakes of Greater Lyon, including Le Grand Large and Miribel-Jonage. Enjoy the magnificent cycle route through central Lyon, along the Rhône’s banks. At the Rhône’s confluence with the Saône, you come to a brand-new quarter marked by contemporary architecture, the most striking building being the Musée des Confluences. Your options for the rest of the day are endless but you can also reward yourselves with a delicious meal in a "petit bouchon", typical restaurant in the city.

Challenge: 45.9km, 266m ascent, 368m descent

End of your trip after breakfast. We advise you to extend your stay in order to take the time to visit the beautiful city of Lyon.

If you don’t bring your own, you can rent a bicycle (hybrid or ebike) from us. You will find your rental bikes waiting for you at your first hotel. The hotel reception staff will give you the keys for your bikes and direct you to the bicycle shed. All bikes are provided with chain locks.  The frame and saddle height are set to your height, although you might want to adjust your saddle to be in the most comfortable position. We also recommend doing a first small test drive of couple of hundred meters to be comfortable with gears, brakes etc. If you have an issue with your bike, you can contact the service provider (name of bike rental in your reservation) directly. Or you can always call us on our emergency phone number.   Our hybrid touring bikes are at least 21-speed gear. You can find all the information regarding our rental bikes below. Experience the advantages of an electric bike on your cycling holiday, particularly when there's a significant gap in ability and experience among cyclists. An e-bike provides a gentle boost up hills, allowing you to easily keep pace with your companions. With a small electric motor and battery, e-bikes make bike trips more achievable, and their batteries can be conveniently charged at hotels. While you still need to pedal, the e-bike significantly reduces the effort required. Familiarity with e-bikes is advised due to their quicker acceleration and heavier build compared to regular bikes, attributed to the electric motor.

The e-bikes have a small electric motor and battery, which can be charged at the hotels. You still have to pedal: it just makes pedaling much easier. Some experience with e-bikes is recommended, as the bikes accelerate faster and are heavier than regular bikes because of the electric motor.

The accommodation in Champagneux was very pleasant (thanks to the amazing host), thought the town itself wasn’t. We also liked the town of Chanaz, which we passed on one of the days. We found it as a pleasant surprise that the elevation estimates on the website was not accurate. I think almost every day was just half of the elevation, which was very nice. And the tartiflette we had in Seyssel was amazing, and we did go swimming in the river before Perouges.

We had a wonderful 5 days of biking with FBT. The attention to detail from the time we made our first inquiries until the end of the trip was top notch. We asked to modify our tour from their standard tour and those changes were readily accommodated. The bike delivery/pick-up were smooth as well as all the luggage transfers. I highly recommend FBT !

The commune of Tain-l'Hermitage, surrounded by vineyards and situated on the river Drôme

Rhône Cycle Path I, Geneva – Lyon

From Geneva to Lyon

The commune of Tain-l'Hermitage, surrounded by vineyards and situated on the river Drôme

The seven days of the cycle tour between Geneva and Lyon all have one thing in common: the Rhône! France’s water-richest river accompanies you every day, and even if when you swap it for sleepy towns and sunflower fields, it will get your attention again in the following stage. First in Switzerland, and then further on in France, you cover 265 kilometres of the Rhône cycle path, which is 880 kilometres long in total. When you arrive in Lyon and the scent of French cuisine fills the streets, you can look back on an eventful cycling holiday.

cycling tours lyon france

Between the ‘smallest metropolis in the world’ Geneva and the gourmet capital of Lyon are seven days of cycling and numerous moments of happiness. Everyone finds their own way: some Eurobike customers appreciate the pretty villages and towns of Campagneux or Meximieux. Others are fascinated by the varied nature, which presents itself at its most beautiful on the Rhône. The steep vineyards are an impressive sight! Check out the Rhône Cycle Path!

  • French savoir-vivre: As you cross the border from Switzerland to France on the second day, the sweet life begins. Treat yourself to a glass of wine along the route and enjoy life as the French do!
  • Views of Mont Blanc: The highest mountain in the Alps greets you on the horizon as you cycle along the Rhône on flat cycle paths.
  • Gourmet capital Lyon: In the home town of Paul Bocuse, you can feast in the French way – you should definitely try specialities like gratin dauphinoise, entrecôte or scallops!

Your cycle tour starts in Switzerland, more precisely in Geneva. The cosmopolitan, lively city is the starting point for upcoming days of cycling. The 265 kilometres by bike are spread over five daily stages between 25 and 70 kilometres. The route is almost entirely flat: however, you should expect a few longer climbs on the first and third days.

Tip: Book the connecting tour from Lyon to Orange and give your cycling holiday another eight days!

Itinerary at a glance

Enjoy your stay at the harbour in Geneva with its famous water fontain ‚Jet d’ Eau’ and in the picturesque old part of town of the ‚smallest metropolis in the world’ – with its cosmopolitan flair and brimming with art and vitality.

You leave Geneva and follow the river Rhône through the Défilé de l´Écluse, a narrow river passage through the mountains. Only after just a few kilometres, you cycle along the first vineyards and your gaze fixes on the mountains of the Savoyer Alps and Mont Blanc. Today’s destination is Seyssel, where two suspension bridges connect the pretty houses and squares on the left and right hand-side of the river Rhône.

On either side of the river Rhône vineyards rise up steeply. You however cycle on flat terrain along the riverbank and enjoy the view. We suggest you have your first break in Chanaz with its charming houses dating back to the 15th and 16th century and its restaurants located directly at the edge of the canal. Afterwards the river Rhône breaks up and you follow the Western branch until Champagneux.

Today you cycle on remote country lanes up to the viewing plateau of Rochefort. Past the Château de Mandrin the route leads you through orchards to marvellous panoramic views. Back at the hotel, you can enjoy the sun terrace, the indoor pool or the renowned restaurant with its French delicacies.

The Rhône cycle path takes you directly along the riverbank through the harmonious border scenery between Ain and Isère. In Perrozan you leave the river and cycle through little hamlets with medieval flair until today’s destination the romantic percehd village of Pérouges. Due to its amazing historic village centre, Pérouges is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Todays trip is through the Teichlandscape of Dombres, to the abbey Notre Dame and the Villars de Dombes.

You cycle on remote paths through lush meadows and fields back to the river Rhône. Now you follow the riverbank along the well-constructed cycle path all the way into the centre of Lyon. Since 1998 the old part of town is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. Marvel at the numerous architectural highlights and enjoy your final evening in one of the countless exquisite restaurants.

Furthermore we recommend the connecting tour from Lyon to Orange.

Nature meets picturesque cities along the Rhône – the view from the Rochefort observation platform is enchanting, as are Champagneux and Lyon. Enjoy the sight of Mont Blanc and French culture with a glass of wine.

Bike the Rhône River cycle path from Switzerland to France

Ancient navigators first spurred the development of the Rhône river valley, bringing new ideas to a quiet region of fierce natural beauty. Over the centuries, some communities along its banks grew rapidly into sophisticated cities like Lyon and Geneva, who still attract visitors in droves, while others never quite progressed beyond sleepy little outposts. Today, traffic is diverted to highways and railways, leaving the riverbanks in peace and quiet... for cyclists!

The 'Via Rhona' project is a bicycle path connecting Lake Léman (Geneva) to France’s Mediterranean beaches. The project is still a work-in-progress, but it is a huge accomplishment and an incredible boon for the people who love France (and French Switzerland, of course). If you’re dreaming of la bonne vie but are short on time, our five-day cycling itinerary is the perfect fit!

Enjoy a visit to two incredible cultural capitals, Lyon and Geneva, and lead your own way on our cycling journey between them. The route we’ve carefully planned will introduce you to Pérouges, Chanaz, and Seyssel, to name a few of France’s best-kept secrets! Along the way, you’ll uncover countless hidden gems, from towering forts and Roman ruins to shimmering lakes and flower-filled fields. You’re free to stop wherever and whenever you choose — even the smallest hamlets along the Rhône possess nuggets of history, timeless beauty, and a hint of magic.

 Tour Description   Daily Program

Daily program

Day 1: Arrival in Geneva Geneva is easily accessible by car, train, and air — many low-cost carriers stop at the city’s manageably sized airport. You’ll arrive in a cultured and cosmopolitan city with more than enough attractions to fill a day, so you can check in at your hotel in the heart of the city, then head back out to explore. Whether you want to stroll around the city’s beautiful botanical gardens, go shopping for world-famous watches, chocolates, and Swiss knives, or set sail on sparkling Lake Geneva, it’s up to you!

Day 2: Geneva — Seyssel (38 miles/61 km, elevation gain 2,230 ft/680 m, descent 2,690 ft/820 m) You'll be fitted for your bicycles and provided with an itinerary briefing after breakfast, so you’ll be ready to jump on your bikes and ride! This is the toughest day of cycling during the whole tour; with rolling hills, you’ll climb your highest ascent. However, the good news is you’ll get to enjoy plenty of downhill riding (nearly 800 meters/2,625 feet)! The route itself winds its way southwest, across the Swiss border at Chancy into the picturesque wine region of Rhône-Alpes, France, where you will spend the remainder of your tour. There are plenty of reasons to stop along the way: stunning panoramas, striking rock formations, and intriguing ruins, to name a few. Your hotel in Seyssel sits right on the river, providing the perfect spot to give your biking legs a rest. Dinner is included.

Day 3: Seyssel — Champagneux (Short Option: 33 miles/53 km, elevation gain 1,115 ft/340 m, descent 1,082ft/330 m; Long Option via Bugey 48 miles/77 km, elevation gain 2,280 ft/680 m, descent 2,280 ft/680 m) On more level terrain, today’s ride will feel like a picnic compared to the previous day! Consider exploring Chanaz – the 'Little Venice of Savoie' – or park your bikes to try the exquisite local cheeses in the Roman town of Belley. Or, if you are content to add some extra kilometers to the journey, you can also head just off route to enjoy lunch in one of the ancestral wineries on the banks of Lac du Bourget. Whatever you choose, make sure to save a little energy for the climb up to your hotel in Champagneux. Your extra effort will be entirely worth it when you feast your eyes on the incredible valley view — and a delicious dinner.

Day 4: Champagneux — Pérouges (Short option: 42 miles/68 km, elevation gain 1,080 ft/330 m, descent 1,050 feet/320 m; Long option: 55 miles/88 km, elevation gain 1,245 ft/380 m; descent 1,180 ft/360 m) The Rhône River will show you the way through small villages and quiet countryside. In fact, the navigation couldn’t be easier - all you have to do is follow the traffic-free bikeway! From Saint-Sorlin, you’ll leave the Via Rhôna and ride on secondary roads through the rural 'Bugey'. Your destination will soon be in sight as you approach the hilltop medieval village of Perouges, where you’ll stay overnight.

Day 5: Pérouges — Lyon (Short Option 27 miles/43 km, elevation gain 555 ft/170 m, descent: 820 ft/250 m; Long Option 37 miles/60 km, elevation gain 1,050 ft/320 m, descent 1,310 ft/400 m) If you just can’t get enough of France’s pretty villages, you’ll want to opt for the longer route. You’ll leave the path of the Rhône River for a while, but trust us, it’s well worth it! On the other hand, if you’re dreaming of diving right into the food stalls at Les Halles in Lyon, you may follow the Via Rhôna directly into the city. Tonight, you’ll retire your wheels in the hilly neighborhood of La Croix Rousse.

Day 6: Departure After breakfast, depart at the time of your choice. Don't want your tour to end? Maximize your time in Lyon with a short day tour in the 'Capital of the Gauls'.

Surface and terrain

This tour takes place on a variety of terrains, but mainly on the Rhône River cycle paths. Each stage will have some climbing and descents, but the first cycling day from Geneva to Seyssel is by far the most significant of these. On this day, you can expect 2,733 ft of elevation gained and 3,179 feet of descending. On Days 3-5 you have the choice for shorter or longer cycling routes, so please be sure to note the variations in the Daily Program.

These are sample hotels and may vary by availability.

Geneva: Hotel Jade

Seyssel: Hotel Au Fil de l’Eau

Champagneux: Hotel Les Bergeronnettes

Pérouges: Hostellerie du Vieux Pérouges

How to get there

Tour start Nearest airport and train station: Geneva (GVA), Switzerland

Getting from the airport to the city is easy and free. From the baggage area, look for the Rail Tickets machine and print one. This ticket will give you 80 minutes of free access on Geneva's public transportation system, called TPG.

Once you have your luggage, your Unireso ticket, and you've cleared Customs, head to your left through the Arrivals Hall. Just outside the exit, you'll find an entrance to the Gare CFF Aéroport. Head inside and down to the lower level. Check when the next train to Geneva city center (Gare Cornavin) departs and from which platform. The ride to Cornavin is only 6-7 minutes.

Alternatively, you may use your Unireso ticket for the bus. You will take bus #5, #10, and F to reach Gare Cornavin. For late-night arrivals we recommend taking a taxi (about 30-40 CHF).

Once you reach Gare Cornavin, you can walk or take a tram, bus, or taxi to your first hotel.

Tour end Nearest airport: Lyon Airport (LYS), France Nearest train station: Lyon, France

Relaxing trip through rural France

Enjoyed the trip, everything was well organized. Beautiful countryside with many small towns and villages. Its a little rural and isolated so if you are looking for action and excitement this may not be the one for you. That said, one evening the village we were staying at (Seyssel on the first night) had a large festival going on and we stayed out later than we should have enjoying the music and the wine! Some really picturesque locations including a legitimate medieval village on the last night, and the biking itself was not overwhelming although I did train for it.

Cro Magnon French Bike Tour from Lyon to Bordeaux

  • Dates & Prices

Overview of our Cro Magnon Cycling Holiday in France

cycling tours lyon france

From the culinary capital of Lyon to the wine mecca of Bordeaux this tour meshes remarkable pre-historic sites with a gastronomic odyssey across southern France. This is our only single country Epic but is also defined by a remarkable diversity of cuisine, landscapes, and history along the route.

Our Cro Magnon bike trip through France takes us on a journey into prehistory as we join the dots between the cave art of Cro Magnon. Cro-Magnon refers to the population of early Homo sapiens dating from the Upper Paleolithic Period (c. 40,000 to c. 10,000 years ago) in Europe and provides the primary focus for this tour. We start at the Chauvet cave in the Ardeche region; its painting has been carbon-dated to 32,000 years ago. From here we head south along the Rhone River and through Provence and the Languedoc as we head to the ‘capital’ of prehistory – Les Eyzies-de-Tayac in the Dordogne. It was here that Édouard Lartet discovered the five archaeological layers in a shallow cave that demonstrated the evolutionary path of mankind. Rouffignac with it’s mammoth, Font de Gaume and Cap Blanc are just three of the amazing cave sites that we’ll visit here. If you would prefer a cycling tour with a broader focus, you may prefer to browse our range of European Cycling Tours or perhaps head further afield to our Cycling Tours in the US.

cycling tours lyon france

We then cycle westwards to perhaps the best-known cave site at Lascaux (images from which are shown below). Discovered by four teenagers in 1940, this site is considered by many to be the most impressive example of pre-historic cave art. The original cave is now closed to the public due to the damaging impact of carbon dioxide in human breath but the replica that is situated on the same site is a wonderful representation in its own right.

Further highlights of this cycling holiday in France include a meeting with  Monsieur Begouen who owns the  Grotte des 3 Frères and a visit to the Gargas cave that is otherwise known as the ‘Hands Cave’. Our trip specialist – Vincent Reboul – has spent years planning this tour and has a network of contacts at all of these cave sites that adds an extra immersive dimension to the tour experience.

First cycling memory: When I was 4 years old, just after I got my first bike – a little bright blue folding Graziella Bicycle with side-wheels – my parents took me to the big square nearby our place. I do not remember how many hours it took, but I will never forget the first time I felt the limitless pleasure of cycling : freedom on wheels.

Favourite bike: The Queen of the collection is a handmade steel Daccordi from the '90s. Upgraded with modern Campagnolo componentary and wheels that I personally built. Just perfect.

Top climb: The 800m unpaved climb (average 10-11% gradient) that leads to my home. At the end of each ride it IS the top climb!

One thing on your bucket list: To ride all around the Mediterranean Coast. I hope to see in my life time when all the nations that share the shores of the Mare Nostrum will share peace and friendship as well.

A special skill you bring on tour: My mechanical knowledge and the attention that goes into creating every single day of a tour - these are my words. Sincere smile, natural empathy and infinite patience – these are guest's words.

A mother of 3 adult children and master of many trades, including finger print expert, ambulance driver and funeral celebrant, her sunny disposition and can-do attitude is a great asset to any tour she is on. With a passion for fine food and a masters in sports massage therapy – Active IQ Level 3 Certificate – her soigneur skills are second to none.

First cycling memory: Sitting on my brother’s handlebars because I was too small to cycle on my own.

Favourite bike: The one I found playing hide and seek. I stumbled across it the day before my 7th birthday. I never told mum and dad I’d seen it. It was blue and I loved it. Nowadays I am more partial to my Lynskey Sportive.

Top climb: Only done one col. Will Mont Ventoux suffice?

One thing on your bucket list: Have cycled in Cuba, Vietnam and Cambodia. Have cycled from the Eiffel Tower to Blackpool Tower which was less exotic! My favourite ride was to cycle the length of Great Britain, from John O’Groats to Land’s End. Maybe a ride across America could be my next ambition.

Cro-Magnon is the name of a place in France where several prehistoric skeletons were found in 1868. The place in question was Les Eyzies de Tayac where we spend two nights on our tour and is commonly referred to as the capital of pre-history.

The Cro-Magnon type of prehistoric human appears to have been heavily built and fairly tall compared with the Neanderthals. The forehead was straight, with only slight ridges over the eyes, the skull long and narrow, the face short and wide and the brain large. It appears that early Cro-Magnons and Neanderthals were closely related . Cro-Magnons seem to have evolved in Africa about 120 000 years ago and spread to western Asia by 90 000 – 100 000 years ago.

They lived at the same time as the Neanderthals. European Cro-Magnon people became widespread during the Upper Palaeolithic, about 30 000 – 35 000 years ago. Compared to the Neanderthals they had a more advanced culture. They made different kinds of tools such as blade tools, scrapers (including some made for smoothing and scraping leather), and fine bone tools. They lived in caves and under rock overhangs, although they may have built stone huts.

Cro-Magnon people buried their dead like the Neanderthals, and probably had a religion: their art may have had magical or religious meaning. Cro-Magnons were the first people to carve , and sculpted engravings and statuettes of humans and animals have been found. In France and Spain, they painted different kinds of animals on the walls of their caves. They also decorated tools and weapons showing that they liked art for decoration as well as for religious reasons.

It is not known for certain when Cro-Magnons became extinct , but they probably were gradually absorbed into modern humans. Individuals with some Cro-Magnon characteristics have been found in the Mesolithic Period (8000 to 5000 BC) and the Neolithic Period (5000 to 2000 BC). Interestingly It is said that when the Canary Islands were found by the Spaniards early in the 15th century, they found people who are thought to have been of Cro-Magnon origin.

challenge_2halfbikes

The “ViaRhôna” project is a bicycle path connecting Lake Geneva to France’s Mediterranean beaches . The project is still a work in progress in some areas (south of Lyon for instance), but is completed between Geneva and Lyon.

As the route is mostly traffic-free, it is a great way to experience France’s countryside without the stress of busy roads, an ideal set up for families or novice riders who wish to try bike touring.

On our tour, we stray away from the ViaRhôna to experience the medieval village of Pérouges, which involves a short section with some traffic (fairly light)

The ViaRhôna from Geneva to Lyon is ideal for riders of all fitness levels. As the route can be broken down in different ways, let us know more about your party and we’ll be able to personalize your itinerary to suit you best.

Cyclists riding a variety of types of bikes

Geneva is easily accessible by car, train , and air. You’ll arrive in a cultural, cosmopolitan city with more than enough attractions to fill a day, so you can check in to your hotel in the heart of the city and then head on out to explore

We’ll meet you at your hotel for a briefing of the next few days’ itinerary. We’ll also provide you with all the necessary navigation tools (marked maps, GPS pre-loaded with the itinerary) and bikes if you’ve chosen not to bring your own. Today’s route winds its way southwest, across the Swiss border into France where you will spend the remainder of your tour. There are plenty of reasons to stop along the way: stunning panoramas, striking rock formations, and intriguing ruins, to name a few. Your hotel in Seyssel sits right on the river, providing the perfect spot to give your biking legs a rest.

The Rhône river will take you to the small village of Chanaz, an ideal coffee stop along the way. If you feel like exploring Lac du Bourget, a few extra miles will allow you to edge along France’s biggest natural lake.  Save some energy for the climb up to your hotel in Champagneux. Your day will end with a fabulous dinner.

The Rhône River will show you the way through small villages and quiet countryside…From Saint-Sorlin, you’ll leave the ViaRhona and ride on secondary roads to the hilltop medieval village of Pérouges. You’re bound to experience a memorable time there (and dinner!).

On your final ride you can choose to follow the ViaRhona or you may opt for a longer ride through the countryside. Either way, you’ll reach Lyon in a traffic-free way before your final climb to La Croix Rousse where your hotel is located. The climb is worth it… Besides the view, you’ll get to experience a lively part of Lyon.

After breakfast in Lyon, depart at the time of your choice.

The Fastest Men and Women of the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, and Vuelta a España

Not all sprinters are created equal. So, let’s delve into the tactical genius and prowess of the peloton’s best mad men and women.

Sprinters with something to prove

Women’s top sprinters.

But what about the green and purple jerseys , those awarded to the leaders and winners of the points classifications, often, though not always, noted sprinters?

These are men and women capable of making unfathomable watts, often after four, five, and sometimes six-plus hours of racing, who are held at bay all day, only to unleash their greatest skills for barely a few hundred meters. They’re often the ones who give us the biggest thrills and the narrowest victories (or defeats).

While we focus on the speed and raw power of sprinters, one thing that’s often overlooked is how well they race; how the best sprinters are often the most patient riders, waiting until the perfect moment to launch their attacks. Theirs is often a game of cat-and-mouse, a strategic battle as much as a power-based one. Given the blazing speed at which these riders can sprint, it’s easy to forget that they’re some of the savviest riders in the peloton.

So, who are they? Let’s take a deeper look at the riders going for those green jerseys and points competitions at the Giro d’Italia , Tour de France , and Vuelta a España this summer.

Men’s Top Sprinters

Jasper philipsen – alpecin-deceuninck.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 11

The young Belgian, once derided as “Jasper the Disaster,” is the best sprinter in the world right now. Possessing the perfect combination of strength, racing know-how, and the patience required to win a bunch sprint, he has to be the favorite heading into any stage suited to sprinters. After a second-place finish at Roubaix , the reigning Tour de France green jersey will head into this year’s Grande Boucle as the heavy favorite to repeat.

Mads Pedersen – Lidl-Trek

topshot correction cycling bel wevelgem in flanders fields men

Unlike most others on this list, Mads Pedersen is hardly a pure sprinter. Rather, the one-day specialist has shown that he’s most at home when launching attacks from a long way out. In fact, just a few weeks ago, he did something most people didn’t think was possible when he stayed with Mathieu van der Poel for some fifty kilometers in Ghent-Wevelgem , only to outsprint the Dutch superstar in the closing meters. There isn’t a team in the men’s peloton looking quite as strong as Lidl-Trek is right now, so expect Mads to compete for at least a few bunch sprint wins in his scheduled Tour and Vuelta appearances.

Tim Merlier – Soudal-Quick-Step

6th uae tour 2024 stage 1

By the metric of the modern peloton, Tim Merlier is getting a bit long in the tooth. The 31-year-old from Flanders only has two Grand Tour stage wins to his name: one in the Giro and one in the Tour . But, as most of Merlier’s early career was focused on cyclocross racing, he very well could just be coming into his prime. In the last three seasons, Merlier has won the Belgian National Road Race and Brugge-De Panne, and, from 2022 to this year, three-peated in Nokere Koerse. Maybe, like a great sprinter does, he’s waiting until the perfect moment to launch.

Mark Cavendish – Astana Qazaqstan

106th giro d'italia 2023 stage 21

In 2024, Cav is sitting on the precipice between these two categories. The Manx Missile was coaxed out of retirement not once but twice with the promise of nabbing Eddy Merckx’s longstanding record of 34 Tour de France stage wins. And while his early-season returns have been anything but stunning, we’re talking about the greatest sprinter of all time here. And so, for that very reason, we have to consider Cav, a two-time Tour de France green jersey winner, in the upper echelon here.

Dylan Groenewegen – Jayco AlUla

40th classica comunitat valenciana 1969 gran premi valegravencia 2024

Groenewegen has five Tour de France stage wins. But four of them came before 2020 and one in 2022. Much of that drought likely has to do with the nine-month ban he received from the UCI after it was determined he caused the crash that put Fabio Jakobsen in an induced coma for two days. Still, Groenewegen has shown form early this season with a ninth-place finish in Ghent-Wevelgem and a few strong stages in Paris-Nice and the UAE Tour.

Kaden Groves – Alpecin-Deceuninck

78th tour of spain 2023 stage 4

Groves, the four-time Vuelta a España stage winner and reigning green jersey champion of that race, will likely contest again for several of that race’s sprint stages. Groves has shown a predilection for hilly stages that tend to thin the herd over the course of the day, stages that are becoming increasingly common in the modern Grand Tour.

Arnaud Démare – Arkéa–B&B Hotels

26th bemer cyclassics hamburg 2023

Though he didn’t get any last year, Arnaud Démare has won ten Grand Tour stages: eight in the Giro and two in the Tour . He’s also a two-time points champion in the Giro. And though his spring campaign has been nothing to write home about, he’s an expert at positioning when the bunch really starts charging. Given as much, he should have more than a few opportunities to outsprint the bunch in this summer’s Tour.

Fabio Jakobsen – dsm firmenich PostNL

78th danilith nokere koerse 2024 men's elite

Like a few others on this list, Jakobsen’s results don’t necessarily match his strength. Easily one of the fastest sprinters in the peloton, Jakobsen will definitely find his way to the bunch in this year’s Giro and Tour, where he’ll try to add to his palmarès, which already counts five Vuelta stage wins. Of course, he hasn’t gotten one of those since 2021, so you either think he’s washed or he’s due.

Dark Horses

Sam Bennett (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) - Outside of Mark Cavendish, Sam Bennett is the most decorated racer on this list. His palmarès includes five stage wins at the Vuelta , three at the Giro , and two at the Tour . He was also the Tour’s 2020 green jersey. And though his last two seasons have been hardly spectacular, it’s easy to predict that Sam Bennett could be in the mix for stage wins, especially after he was left off AG2R’s Tour roster last year.

Caleb Ewan (Jayco AlUla) - The man who was once a sure-fire bet to take a Grand Tour sprint stage—he’s won ten in his career—has fallen to the bottom of this pack simply because he hasn’t been able to nab a stage win since the 2021 Giro d’Italia . Of course, he’s still one of the strongest sprinters on Earth and always a threat to take a win, which, over the last three years, he’s been ever so close to. Despite his recent cold streak, Ewan is truly one of the riders you can never, ever count out.

Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty) - After a historic stage win in the 2022 Giro d’Italia and a third-place finish behind Jasper Phillipsen and Mark Cavendish in stage 7 of last’s Tour de France, the Eritrean rider showed a lot of promise as a Grand Tour sprinter. Now confirmed for the Giro, we hope to see Girmay bring on the heat to the favorites.

Alberto Dainese (Tudor Pro Cycling) - While still early in his professional career, Dainese has already demonstrated his potential as a top-level sprinter and is definitely one to watch. In 2023, the Italian sprinter won two Giro stages and one Vuelta stage.

On the women’s side of the coin, there’s far less separation between the heavy favorites, the maybe-they-could, and the sprinters who might steal a stage here or there. And much of that has to do with the fact that there’s much more parity in general in the women’s WorldTour (which is why we should all be watching a lot more women’s races!). But there is still the cream of the crop and everyone else.

Lotte Kopecky – SD Worx-Protime

5th danilith nokere koerse 2024 women's elite

You could easily argue that Lotte Kopecky is the strongest bike racer in the world, regardless of gender. Her ability to sustain efforts and grind her opponents into dust behind her is matched only by the likes of Mathieu van der Poel . As she heads into this summer as the reigning Tour de France points champion, all eyes will be on the 28-year-old to rack up more stage wins.

Lorena Wiebes – SD Worx-Protime

2nd uae tour 2024 stage 1

It’s no secret that SD Worx is sitting on an embarrassment of riches right now. This is evidenced by the fact that Lotte Kopecky is racing on the same team as Lorena Wiebes , perhaps the strongest pure sprinter in the women’s peloton. The 25-year-old Dutchwoman has won Ronde van Drenthe four years in a row and just added to her palmarès with a Gent-Wevelgem victory last weekend. In a heads-up sprint, Wiebes is as tough as out there is.

Elisa Balsamo – Lidl-Trek

7th women's classic brugge de panne 2024

With wins at Brugge-De Panne and Trofeo Alfredo Binda and second-place finishes at Paris-Roubaix , Ronde van Drenthe, and Ghent-Wevelgem , the Italian one-day specialist is having a world-class spring campaign. She’s had a bit of success in stage races, nabbing a pair of wins at the 2022 Giro Donne and another pair at 2023’s Setmana Ciclista Valenciana. But at just 26 years old, Balsamo could be on the precipice of a breakout summer.

Charlotte Kool – dsm firmenich PostNL

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 2

At just 24 years old, Charlotte Kool seems to be hitting her prime. She won her first Grand Tour stage in last year’s Vuelta and was fighting for wins in Brugge-De Panne and Ghent-Wevelgem, where she finished second and fourth, respectively. She won the points classification in last year’s UAE Tour and should rack up plenty of points over the course of the summer.

Emma Norsgaard – Movistar

2nd tour de france femmes 2023 stage 6

Though Norsgaard’s spring has been inauspicious at best, she’s always a tough out when it comes to sprints. With a pair of stage wins to her name (a Giro stage in 2021 and a Tour stage in 2023), she knows how to win from the bunch. She just needs to find her way to the front and put herself in a position to compete. If she can get there, there’s no doubt she’s got the legs.

Marianne Vos – Visma-Lease a Bike

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 4

So long as there’s a bike race, and so long as Marianne Vos is in that bike race, it’s just plain stupid to count her out. To list her palmarès would take all of the space this story has, so just accept the fact that she’s likely to be there at the end, whether the stage calls for a breakaway, a punchy climb, or a bunch sprint. And though she’s one of the women’s peloton’s elder stateswomen at age 36, with recent wins at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Dwars door Vlaanderen , she’s still proving week after week that she can race with—and beat—the best.

Elisa Longo Borghini – Lidl-Trek

2nd paris roubaix 2022 women's elite

Between Mads Pedersen , Elisa Balsamo, and Longo Borghini, Lidl-Trek’s cup runneth over with one-day talent. But to win one-day races, you need to be able to create and sustain attacks, and there are few better in the women’s bunch at that than Longo Borghini. Hardly a pure sprinter, she’ll need to use her well-honed racing acumen if she’s going to take a stage win.

Chloé Dygert – Canyon//SRAM

9th la vuelta femenina 2023 stage 2

Dygert is back. After suffering a training setback late last year, stemming from an injury sustained earlier in 2023, Dygert returned to the peloton with a sixth-place finish in Brugge-De Panne. And while she’s known more for her time-trialing acumen than her pure sprint ability, she can put down and sustain boatloads of power. If she and her teammates can put her in the right position, look for the American star to steal a stage here or there.

Chiara Consonni (UAE Team ADQ) - This is only Consonni’s second year at the WorldTour level, but she’s shown in recent times that she has the legs and the know-how to go elbow-to-elbow with the best of the bunch. Her best result is arguably a third-place finish in the points classification in this year’s UAE Tour. Look for her to steal a stage win or two (or three) as the summer progresses.

Rachele Barbieri (dsm firmenich PostNL) - For all of the success Rachele Barbieri has enjoyed on the track, she’s had little on the road. Her best finishes in major races are a pair of second-place finishes in stages in the Giro and UAE Tour and two fourth-place finishes in Tour stages. However, anyone who can make the kind of power Babieri is capable of making can and should not be counted out. Look for her to snag a sleeper win at some point this year.

This race is part of the Speed Week race series, with nine races in South Carolina and Georgia.

"We're thrilled to bring high-speed criterium racing back to Greenville," Hincapie said. "This event will be a fantastic spring highlight for the entire community to enjoy."

Tour de France legends Julich, Vande Velde and Hincapie are offering the first 200 registered riders to a casual, one-kilometer speed criterium loop race that travels around downtown for 20 minutes beginning at 5:15 p.m.

Who is George Hincapie and the other Tour de France legends?

Hincapie is a former professional racing cyclist who competed alongside Lance Armstrong as his domestique or assisting rider on the U.S. PostalPro Cycling Team. He is also known for helping Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans to their first Tour de France victories in 2007 and 2011.

During Hincapie's 27-year professional cycling career, he won three U.S. Professional Road Race championships and finished second in the 2005 Paris-Roubaix, which still stands as the highest-placing American ranking for that specific race.

In October 2012, Hincapie admitted to using banned substances during his career and received a six-month ban and loss of race results between May 2004 and July 2006.

The New York native, now a Greenville resident, has had the Hincapie name in Greenville pro and amateur cycling since the Michelin Cycling Classic in 1994. His footprint in the Upstate also includes a stake in Hotel Domestique and Restaurant 17, which has an on-site vineyard and pathways for cycling lessons. He has brought various international cyclists to the area to train and compete in Traveler's Rest and downtown Greenville.

Hincapie will host the Gran Fondo Hincape in Greenville on October 19, 2024.

How do I attend the Greenville Cycling Classic?

This is a free event; however, amateur and professional cyclists looking to compete still have time to register. Fees to participate in the races range between $40 and $60. Winners can win cash prizes up to $6,000.

Ages 12 and up can join the ride with Tour de France legends, and the pool limit is 200 people. The registration deadline for all events is April 24 at 5 p.m.

The racing path will expand between East North Street, East McBee Avenue, and South Laurens Street and South Brown Street.

What roads will be closed during the race?

Road closures for the event will be in place from noon to 11 p.m. on April 25. They will include:- Main Street, from McBee Avenue to East North Street- East North Street, from North Main to Brown Streets- Brown Street, from East North Street to McBee Avenue- McBee Avenue, from South Brown Street to South Laurens Street- South Laurens Street, from West McBee Avenue to West Washington Street- Washington Street, from South Laurens to Brown streets

Cycling star Evenepoel targets June return from crash ahead of Tour de France and Paris Olympics

Two weeks after crashing heavily in Spain, two-time world champion Remco Evenepoel said on Friday he’s on track to race again in June ahead of the Tour de France and Paris Olympics.

The Belgian needed surgery after breaking a collar bone and shoulder blade in a crash while descending in the Tour of Basque Country.

Evenepoel will train at high altitude before a planned return to racing at the Critérium du Dauphiné in France from June 2-9 or the week after at the Tour de Suisse, he said in an interview broadcast by his team Soudal–Quick-Step.

He won the worlds time trial last year and the road race in 2022, and should target both Olympic events on the streets of Paris on back-to-back Saturdays — July 27 and Aug. 3. First, he will make his Tour de France debut on June 29.

“It’s going to be something special. Especially the Tour,” Evenepoel said. “It makes it a bit easier to do Tour-Olympics because it’s in the same country, not too far like it was three years ago to go to Tokyo. That was more difficult for a lot of guys.”

Evenepoel raced in both Olympic road events in Japan. He placed ninth in the time trial, more than one minute out of the medals and trailing 2 minutes, 17 seconds behind gold medalist Primož Roglič.

Roglič was caught up in Evenepoel’s crash in Spain and also will miss the one-day classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday. Evenepoel won the past two editions of the storied race.

Evenepoel said the early spring injury gave him time to recover like it was a midseason break. It let him spend the Eid al-Fitr holiday last week with his wife Oumi Rayane and her family.

“That was a very beautiful day,” he said. “It’s better to have the injury now than in a couple of weeks. It’s a bit of luck in my bad luck.”
