11 Chinese Cartoon TV Shows for Learners of All Ages

It’s no secret that kids can pick up languages more quickly than adults. But how can we bridge the learning gap between the two?

Well, you can learn through Chinese cartoons!

Watching Chinese cartoons is a great way to learn Mandarin, either by yourself or with a kid—especially if you’re a beginner.

So let’s look at 11 Chinese cartoons that are entertaining for Mandarin learners of all ages.

1. “Ni Hao, Kai-lan” (你好, 凯兰)

2. “our friend remy bear” (我们的朋友熊小米), 3. “pleasant goat and big big wolf” (喜羊羊与灰太狼), 4. “super wings” (超级飞侠), 5. “journey to the west: legends of the monkey king” (西游记), 6. “the legend of huainanzi” (淮南子传奇), 7. “pororo the little penguin” (小企鹅宝露露), 8. “the olympic adventures of fuwa” (福娃奥运漫游记), 9. “the adventures of little carp” (小鲤鱼历险记), 10. “gg bond” (猪猪侠), 11. “grandmaster of demonic cultivation” (魔道祖师), how to learn with chinese cartoons, and one more thing....

Pinyin: nǐ hǎo, kǎi lán

If you grew up in the US or Canada, you might remember this 2009 series from cable television. “Ni Hao Kai-lan” is often described as the Chinese “Dora the Explorer.”  The show follows Kai-lan, a young Chinese girl who goes on adventures with her animal friends.

The episodes are lesson-based and aim to engage the viewer in answering questions and learning Mandarin. For the most part, spoken Mandarin is taught in addition to trivia about Chinese culture.

“Ni Hao Kai-lan” is entertaining enough that adults can enjoy it just as much as children, making it a great show to watch with your little one if you’re learning Chinese together. The learning level is low beginner, so those who know zero Chinese will definitely learn a lot from this show.

Pinyin: wǒ men de péng yǒu xióng xiǎo mǐ

Remy (or Rammie) Bear is a panda who shares funny, cute tidbits about his friends and their happy lives. This is a super uplifting show, whether you’re a kid or adult.

“Our Friend Remy Bear” uses storytelling to teach children about social skills and kindness while also teaching Chinese.

Because fluent Mandarin is spoken, this may be a little difficult for just anyone to watch and enjoy. It’s well-suited for learners aged six and up, or for adults who already know a little Chinese.  You may be able to find more episodes on YouTube.

Pinyin: xǐ yáng yáng yǔ huī tài láng

This is a classic straight from CCTV in China! “Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf” aired in 2005, but it’s still great to watch and relevant enough to enjoy today. Adults and children can enjoy it together as there’s quite a bit of hidden adult humor.

In this Chinese cartoon, a group of lambs and sheep live in harmony until Gray Wolf and his wife move in. This could be considered a comedy and slice-of-life show rolled up into one that’s palatable for both children and adults.

Episodes are available on Youku, with only Chinese subtitles. Though the demographic is ages four through six, it would be best if the viewer had a couple of years of Chinese language experience to be able to catch on. This show is helpful for spoken association with hanzi , as well as listening skills.

Pinyin: chāo jí fēi xiá

“Super Wings!” is a bit different than other shows we’ve covered. It was co-produced by South Korean, Chinese and American production companies.

It’s been dubbed in a ton of languages, the original being Mandarin Chinese. This is definitely reflected in the show, as there are lots of episodes that take place in China and discuss Chinese culture.

“Super Wings!” is pretty much “Jay Jay the Jet Plane” without the horrifying, uncannily human-faced airplanes. This show is more cartoony—more like an educational “Transformers.” It notably seeks to teach kids about cultural diversity, tolerance and empathy.

Pinyin: xī yóu jì

This children’s television show from the turn of the millennium is based on the Chinese legend of the Monkey King .

Regarded as a classic of Chinese animation, this cartoon follows the magically-birthed Monkey King and his incredible, mystical journey from China to India.

In addition to the CCTV link above, you can likely find some episodes of “Journey to the West: Legends of the Monkey King” on YouTube . If you’re already an intermediate or advanced learner, not using subtitles will help improve your Chinese listening skills.

Pinyin: huái nán zi chuán qí

This Chinese cartoon may be  more appropriate for older children and adults, as there are some minor adult themes.

“The Legend of Huainanzi” follows the story of Hong Lie, a young hero who takes on the task of finding missing pieces of an occult book that could save the world from supernatural disasters.

The art style is very similar to anime . The show is available on CCTV at the link above in Chinese, with simultaneous English and Chinese subtitles. All learners can benefit from watching this show, as long as they’re comfortable with the adult themes.

Pinyin: xiǎo qì é bǎo lù lù

This cute, computer-animated show is the product of a collaboration between South Korean and Chinese production companies.

The show revolves around the fun adventures of a cute penguin named Pororo and his animal friends. Each episode ends in a practical or moral lesson.

You will need an Oznoz subscription ($9.99 a month) to watch “Pororo the Little Penguin” episodes. It’s available in Korean, Chinese, Japanese and English, plus subtitles.

Pinyin: f ú wá ào yùn màn yóu jì

This oldie but goodie has been around since 2007, right when the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was announced. The cartoon follows the adventures of the little humanoid creatures that served as the Olympic mascots, known as the Fuwa.

Episodes of “The Olympic Adventures of Fuwa” are available on YouTube with Chinese audio. High-resolution versions are hard to find online. However, for those traveling abroad, you can look for reruns of the show on China Beijing TV Station, NHK and Kaku TV.

If you’re dead set on accessing higher-quality versions of this show where you’re at, you can always access those channels by purchasing a VPN .

Pinyin: xiǎo lǐ yú lì xiǎn jì

What’s cuter than a cartoon about a little fish? (I mean, come on, “Finding Nemo”—need I say more?)

“The Adventures of Little Carp” is based on an old Chinese folktale . Bubbles, the little carp, must find the ancient Dragon King to save his grandmother and stop an evil snake from taking over the lake.

This series is simple enough and relatively slow-paced, so beginners may be able to understand some of it without subtitles. The show is available for streaming via CCTV with Chinese audio and subtitles. If you’re traveling abroad, you can also enjoy reruns of “The Adventures of Little Carp” on CCTV-Children in China.

Pinyin: zhū zhū xiá

This computer-animated cartoon from China follows the story of GG Bond, a sassy pig with supernatural powers. Most of the episodes are comedies for children, though adult jokes do occasionally pop up.

Children and adults will definitely enjoy watching this one together. You can view episodes of “GG Bond” via the link above or the show’s official YouTube channel where  new episodes are broadcast live every week.

You may not always have available subtitles for this Mandarin-language show, so intermediate and advanced learners would probably benefit the most from watching.

Pinyin: mó dào zǔ shī

Also known as “Mo Dao Zu Shi” or “MDZS,” this anime-style cartoon from China may be better suited for older viewers, as it does contain some violent imagery.

This fantasy series takes place in an ambiguous time period in China in which humans are attempting to become immortal through magic—and other means.

“Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation” is available at the link above with English subtitles. The dialogue is quite heavy, so intermediate learners may benefit the most from watching.

Here are some benefits of learning Mandarin with Chinese cartoons:

  • While not all of these shows are bilingual, the ones that are can be very helpful for newbie Chinese learners, both children and adults. Some of the bilingual shows here  provide accessible mini-lessons within each episode to make learning the language more fun.
  • In the purely Chinese shows, the spoken Mandarin is often slow and easy enough for beginners to follow. Because most of these shows are designed with kids in mind , the Mandarin Chinese dialogue is perfect for beginner learners of any age.
  • Many Chinese cartoon TV shows provide insight into Chinese culture that’s vital for all levels of Chinese learners. After all, understanding the culture in which Mandarin is spoken is also very important for learning the language.

chinese tourist cartoon

This may surprise you, but… You can learn a lot about the Chinese language just by watching Chinese cartoons!

If you learn languages by self-study like I do, you are probably always on a lookout for new ways to make your language learning journey more interesting.

A very effective way to practice a new language is to watch movies and videos.

For example, have you ever used Youtube as a language learning tool ? And if you’re already watching movies to practice your new skills, do you know how to watch a movie to learn a language ?

Learning a new language can be a difficult mission sometimes, and Mandarin Chinese might be quite a challenge.

So if you’re a new learner, don’t jump straight into the sea of the Chinese movies, but start off slowly by dipping your toes in a shallow pool – of Chinese cartoons .

In this article, I’ll introduce you to the most popular Chinese cartoons that will help you learn this language – even as an adult.

1. “The Monkey King” – 孙悟空 ( sūnwùkōng )

One of the most well known classic Chinese story figures has become one of the most popular Chinese cartoon characters – several times.

Sun Wukong, or the Monkey King, possesses magical powers, such as extreme strength and speed, but he’s also an incredible fighter.

In his “Journey to the West”, the Monkey King travels from China to India and faces many mystical and interesting challenges.

You can watch different versions of The Monkey King on YouTube with English subtitles

2. “The Stories of Avanti” – 阿凡提的故事 ( āfántí de gùshì )

Avanti, or Effendi, is a Chinese cartoon from the 1970s and 1980s.

The story is about a man named Nasreddin whose purpose was to help the poor and punish the rich and greedy.

Avanti is a polite way of calling someone “sir” in Turkish, which is explained by the fact that Uyghurs believe he comes from Turkistan.

Even though the story was filmed a relatively long time ago, it became, and still is, one of the most loved and best Chinese cartoon series.

Watch The Stories of Avanti here .

3. “Big Ear TuTu” – 大耳朵图图 ( dà ěrduǒ tútú )

A kids show about a curious boy with a specific characteristic – large ears. Hu Tutu, a little boy, is very energetic and always full of questions.

The fact that this show is mainly for Chinese preschoolers guarantees that it’s ideal for a beginner Mandarin learner.

You can start watching Big Ear TuTu here .

4. “Ni Hao Kai-lan” – 你好, 凯兰 ( nǐ hǎo, kǎi lán )

If you’re looking for something that would be closer to Western culture, then Ni Hao Kai-lan might be the perfect fit for you.

One of the newer Chinese kids shows (aired in 2008) is actually American-Canadian made. The creator is a Chinese-American artist who based the cartoon on her childhood memories.

Kai-lan is a little Chinese-American girl who, with her animal friends, goes on different adventures in each episode.

She and her friends never forget to incorporate Mandarin Chinese words and bits about Chinese culture in their stories. No matter what happens in an episode, Kai-lan and her friends always end up working together, usually with a moral lesson.

These series also have an interactive component where each learner can repeat or practice what they’ve learned. It’s similar in this way to Dora the Explorer, and it’s a great show if you’re trying to introduce your children to the Chinese language as well.

You can find Ni Hao Kai-lan on Amazon Prime.

5. “Pororo the Little Penguin” – 小企鹅宝露露 ( xiǎo qì'é bǎo lùlù )

Originally from Korea, Pororo the Little Penguin is a popular children Chinese anime. It’s available in both Korean and Mandarin Chinese with subtitles.

Pororo is a cute little computer-animated penguin who faces different challenges in each episode. He and his animal friends always end up learning a moral lesson.

The show has almost 300 episodes and since it’s aimed at children, the language used is perfect for beginner learners.

Pororo is available on Netflix, and you can switch to Mandarin audio in the Audio and Subtitles settings.

6. “Nine Songs of the Moving Heavens” – 天行九歌 ( tiān xíng jiǔ gē )

Also translated as “Nine Songs of the Sky”, this Chinese anime is a story about the Ninth Prince of Han State, Han Fei.

Han Fei decides to form his own group of warriors, Quicksand, who help him fight against his enemies and form a new, stronger Han State.

Episodes of this anime series are available on YouTube .

7. “The Adventures of Little Carp” – 小鲤鱼历险记 ( xiǎo lǐyú lìxiǎn jì )

Another Chinese cartoon adaptation of a classic Chinese tale.

In this folktale, the Dragon’s Gate, at the top of a mystical mountain, is the goal of many carps. If a carp manages to reach the Dragon’s Gate, it’ll turn into a dragon. Only a few, however, are able to reach the gate when swimming upstream.

The Adventures of Little Carp tells stories about Bubbles, a carp that lives with his grandmother until Evil Snake turns her into a bubble. Bubbles is searching for a dragon that can turn her back and he experiences many adventures with his animal friends.

Watch Bubble’s tales here .

8. “Big Head Son & Small Head Dad” – 大头儿子和小头爸爸 ( dà tóu érzi hé xiǎo tóu bàba )

Another one of Chinese cartoon shows that points out a physical feature. But in this case, it actually has a meaning.

“Big head” in China symbolizes that a person is smart, and the father from this show is also very selfless and kind. These traits show children what’s really important and how one should be.

These two and the boy’s mom are from Shanghai and their lives are the main subject of this cartoon.

Many episodes are available on YouTube .

9. “GG Bond” – 猪猪侠 ( zhū zhū xiá )

This is a story about an enthusiastic pig who always wants to help others. He and his 3D computer-animated friends teach the audience how important values are – not only the traditional Chinese ones but also universal moral values.

GG Bond appreciates his elders, friendship and courage, but the series also touches issues like homelessness, environmental damage and pollution.

The interesting thing about this cartoon is that it’s aimed at both children and adults, as occasionally there are references that only adults would understand.

Like many other Chinese kids shows from this list, GG Bond can be found on YouTube .

10. “The Legend of Huainanzi” – 淮南子传奇 ( huáinánzi chuánqí )

This is a young adult Chinese anime that can be classified as historical fantasy.

The series is based on Huainanzi – classical Chinese philosophical essays. The main character, a 12-year old hero, is looking for pieces of a book that could save the world. These pieces were transformed into different objects and he now has to rediscover them.

As he goes through this adventure, he forms strong friendships, but also a strong relationship with nature and his ancestors.

The language in The Legend of Huainanzi can be a bit more advanced at times compared to other cartoons in this list, because it’s not aimed at small children. If you’ve been learning Chinese for a while and the theme sounds interesting to you, give this animated story a try.

Practice your Chinese listening skills by watching The Legend of Huainanzi here .

11. “Our Friend Remy Bear” – 我的朋友熊小米 (wǒ de péng yǒu xióng xiǎo mǐ)

Remy Bear, a little panda, and its many animal friends all share happy little stories together.

They always encourage and appreciate each other, support each other’s actions and never lack kindness.

This cartoon is aimed at Chinese children, but I’d say the level is intermediate, so a beginner learner can have trouble understanding at times.

But don’t worry, if you’ll find the stories of Remy Bear and its friends interesting, you’ll get used to the language and will understand very quickly.

Watch Remy Bear on the Chinese TV station CCTV .

12. “Super Wings!” – 超级飞侠 (chāo jí fēi xiá)

Super Wings! is one of the most popular cartoons in China, and it’s also well-known in South Korea and the USA, as it’s a co-production that crosses these three countries.

These animated series follow Jett and other Super Wings at the World Airport. They work with deliveries from different locations, so they need to first learn something about the language and facts about each country. With this in mind, every problem they face gets easily solved.

The main premise is to teach children kindness and tolerance when it comes to diversity.

You can find plenty of episodes of Super Wings on YouTube.

13. “Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf” – 喜羊羊与灰太狼 ( xǐ yáng yáng yǔ huī tài láng )

A Chinese anime-influenced series aimed at children, but thanks to multiple hidden grown-up jokes, it’s interesting enough for adults too.

The plot of this cartoon surrounds a pasture where sheep and goats live in harmony until a wolf and his wife decide to move in.

Stories of these animals can be classified as a comedy that’s suitable for both children and adults.

Keep in mind that you might need to know a little more than the basics of the Chinese language to be able to understand the story.

Watch these comedy cartoon stories here .

14. “Nezha” – 哪吒 ( nǎzhā )

Nezha was born inside a ball of flesh after his mother was pregnant with him for three years. He was born as a boy who knew how to walk and speak immediately. His magical story continues with the acceptance as a student by the immortal Taiyi Zhenren who trained him into a warrior.

Nezha also became a deity and is known in the Chinese folk religion.

The cartoon is aimed at children, but the language might be more advanced at times. You’ll enjoy learning Mandarin with the help of the tales of Nezha if you are a fan of Chinese folk tales.

You can watch Nezha here .

15. “Lotus Lantern” – 宝莲灯 ( bǎo lián dēng )

A cartoon based on a traditional fairytale with a popular Chinese character – a boy named Chenxiang.

He was born as a son of a goddess and a mortal. His father was killed before he was born and his mother was imprisoned. Chenxiang grew up not knowing where he came from, but thanks to a magical lotus lantern from his mother and his courage, he saves his mother at the end.

This movie was released in China in 1999 and quickly became one of the most popular Chinese cartoons.

Both adults and children love to watch it, because the story and the execution of this animated movie are exceptional.

Lotus Lantern is available on YouTube or here in the form of a series.

The long-expected China Cartoon & Animation Museum opened to the public this June. It presents China's cartoon and animation development to date, with over 20,000 manuscripts, archives and animation models.

Located in east China's Hangzhou City, the museum is just a few meters away from the main venue for the annual China International Cartoon and Animation Festival. Covering an area of over 30,000 square meters, it is also the biggest of its kind in the country.

The exhibitions are divided into two main parts, showing both past and contemporary Chinese animation, cartoons, comics and games.

In the exhibition showcasing the past, visitors can see some of the earliest forms of animation and comics, such as shadow play and revolving scenic lantern. It also presents some of the most classic works of China and their production methods. Meanwhile, the section labeled "today" offers visitors an immersive experience into the world of animation, comics and games.

Thanks to motion capture technology, visitors can transform into characters from popular video games or become voice actors in a hit animation for added fun.

Visit the museum with CGTN for a full picture of both past and contemporary Chinese cartoons and animation.

A famous Chinese painting named "Han Xizai Ye Yan Tu" (Han Xizai's Night Banquet), dating back to the 10th century, is composed of five consecutive pictures that vividly reflect the luxurious nightlife of ancient Chinese Government officials. Thus the painting complies with the basic definition of a cartoon (a series of pictures telling a story; a comic strip).

However, although the Chinese cartoon existed in ancient times, it did not grow into an independent painting style until at the end of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

In May 1925, Feng Zikai, considered to be China's cartoon master, started to publish his drawings at "wen xue zhou kan" (what is this?). His works were marked with the inscription "cartoon," marking the first time that the name of "cartoon" appeared to the public in China. From then on, various forms of cartoons spread all over the main streets and small alleys in China.

China's cartoon publications entered its peak in the 1930's. Many large-scale publications like Times Cartoon and China Cartoon welled up. At the same time, with the introduction of foreign cartoon books, China's cartoonists started to learn, drawing cartoon series and creating some famous characters. Ye Qianyu's "Mr Wang," Peng Di's "Master Q," and Zang Leping's "San Mao series" were all the representatives during that period.

The cartoons in that period reflected people's real life, exposing and satirizing the old China's various forms of corruption and darkness, while advocating democracy and the latest trend. In short, the artists promoted cartoons into a treasure in Chinese drawing art, with the cartoons having a very important status in China's modern drawing history.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A pair of giant pandas will soon make the journey from China to the U.S., where they will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo as part of an ongoing conservation partnership between the two nations, officials said Monday.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance said its caretakers recently visited China to meet the giant pandas, Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, ahead of their planned trip to Southern California . An exact date for the handoff hasn't been set.

Yun Chuan, a mild-mannered male who's nearly 5 years old, has “deep connections” to California, the wildlife alliance said. His mother, Zhen Zhen, was born at the San Diego Zoo in 2007 to parents Bai Yun and Gao Gao.

Xin Bao is a nearly 4-year-old female described as “a gentle and witty introvert with a sweet round face and big ears.”

“Our conservation partners in China shared photographs and personality traits of Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, but meeting them in person was so special," said Dr. Megan Owen, the alliance's vice president of conservation science. “It’s inspiring as people from around the world come together to conserve, protect, and care for these special bears, and we can’t wait to welcome them to San Diego.”

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance has a nearly 30-year partnership with leading conservation institutions in China focused on protecting and recovering giant pandas and the bamboo forests they depend on.
