Amalfi Coastal Trails – If you are interested in walking the ancient paths of the Amalfi Coast, and exploring Amalfi, Praiano, Ravello, and Positano, then this is the trip for you! Discover the world-famous “Footpath of the Gods”, take a day trip to Capri, and visit the ruins in Pompeii. This is our best-selling itinerary!

The Amalfi Coast & Sorrento Peninsula – Combine walks between seaside villages of the Amalfi Coast with trails high above the turquoise Mediterranean. The trip highlights include a visit to the small island of Capri and the beautiful Sorrento Peninsula that overlooks the Bay of Naples.

Amalfi in Style – Choose this itinerary if you would like to walk the Amalfi Coast while staying in stylish, handpicked 4* hotels in truly stunning locations. Walk the “Footpath of the Gods”, climb up Mt Tre Calli and explore the nature reserve of ‘Valle delle Ferriere’, a valley surrounded by high cliffs.

Amalfi Coast & Mountains – This itinerary showcases the best of two distinct landscapes. You will stay in rural communities in the mountains, high above the coast. Then get up close to the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean and the rugged coastline that is dotted with fishing villages.

Which itinerary is for me?

Spaghetti alle Vongole – A dish that is available in nearly any coastal town! Spaghetti with freshly-caught clams which can be ordered with tomatoes or without. Best enjoyed on a panoramic terrace with a glass of local wine!

Delizia di Limone – It is said that the world’s best lemons grow in the region of the Amalfi Coast and Gulf of Sorrento. This dessert is one of the many regional specialties; a lemon-scented sponge cake covered with lemon zest and frosting.

Fiori di Latte – Cheesemongers in the tiny mountain hamlet of Agerola produce the famous Fiori di Latte cheese that you can typically find on a Neapolitan Margherita Pizza. A little drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of fresh sea salt turn this fresh cheese into something magical.

Totani e Patate – Back in the day many small towns along the coast, such as Positano and Praiano, were rustic villages. This dish of squid and potatoes reflects on their humble fishing roots and makes for a delicious starter or main course.

Scialatielli con Gamberi e Zucchine – This is a delightful fresh pasta dish with zucchini and locally-caught fresh shrimp tossed in a rich seafood stock. It translates to ‘scialare’ which means to enjoy and ‘tiella’ which means pan, simply put; enjoyment in a pan. Many restaurants may also include mussels, prawns, or clams.

Amalfi Coast: Must Try Foods

Amalfi – a small town that is easily walked from one end to the other in 20 minutes! Amalfi is steeped in history and culture, has a small beach, busy piazzas, lively seaside restaurants and has a beautiful Byzantine-influenced cathedral.

Atrani – a lesser-known village in comparison to its neighbour Amalfi but well worth a visit! Tier upon tier of multi-coloured houses above a small stretch of sandy beach – arguably one of the most idyllic settings along the coast.

Ravello – in contrast to other Amalfi villages this settlement was built on a hill, rather than on the coast – like a sanctuary away from possible invaders. Ravello is chic and refined, with polished piazzas, lush villas and majestic gardens. Villa Cimbrone is a must-see!

Praiano – an ancient fishing village that got its name from the Greek word of ‘open sea’. Formerly a silk-production centre this was a favourite amongst the Amalfi dukes that made it their summer residence.

Positano – the sight of Positano upon reaching it is truly breath-taking, the shimmering blue sea, the silvery beach, Santa Maria Church and the interconnected, multi-coloured houses. It’s dramatic, fashionable, and very photogenic!

The Amalfi Coast has long been exalted as the most inspiring coast in all Europe, and across the Bay of Naples lies enticing Capri, soaring out of azure seas. We'll link these two realms with moderate hikes, cultural encounters, and superb meals. One hike brings us from clifftop Ravello to the iconic coastal village of Positano, and on craggy Capri, we follow a rocky path to the top of the island. Back on the mainland, we hike across lemon groves in the Sorrento Hills, then walk along the brooding crater rim of Mt. Vesuvius. Between hikes, we'll watch mozzarella di bufala being made, visit an olive farm, and explore the haunting ruins of Pompeii.

What the Trip is Like

 • 600-700 feet gain/loss
 • Day 6: 3 miles, 2.5 hours, 1,250 feet gain, and 50 feet loss; includes a short scramble

Our hikes take place in a variety of terrains and include hilly countryside walks, scrambles over limestone and lava rock, ancient stone paths in town, and forest trails. There are very steep sections of stone staircases that can be hard on the knees, and slippery when it's been raining. Hiking poles are highly recommended. Many of the trails are on rocky and uneven ground, so it is important that you have proper hiking footwear that is comfortable and has good traction. Hiking in this part of Italy brings you face to face with the delicate balance between urbanization and unspoiled nature.

A plus (+) sign means the trip is a bit more strenuous than other trips of that level. The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

Hikes in Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is a Mediterranean jewel, with turquoise seas that lap gently at the feet of towering cliffs. This splendid region has long attracted visitors with an adventurous spirit, offering them spectacular hiking trails through lush forest, with sea views to die for. Top that off with fantastic Italian cuisine and picturesque cliff-side villages, and you’ve got one of the best hiking destinations south of the Dolomites.

The Amalfi Coast is so beautiful that it’s even a UNESCO World Heritage site, chosen for its rich history, remarkable topography and fascinating culture. Although the cliffs rise up steeply from the sea, this region is known for its lovely beaches, pretty villages, and distinctive hillsides, dotted with terraces, vineyards, and olive groves. Hiking here is a sheer delight, passing over undulating trails that wind through beautiful scenery, with plenty of unique historical sites along the way.

Indeed, this beautiful region in the south of Italy has been attracting visitors for thousands of years – the Greeks, Romans, and Norman all left their mark on the coastline, building temples, churches and fortresses, some of which still stand today. When you go hiking in the Amalfi Coast you’ll be treading paths that were once walked by Roman foot-soldiers and medieval merchants, tracing their way up and down the vertiginous sea cliffs. Thousands of years on, travellers still marvel at the sheer natural beauty of this coastline, and flock here in ever-greater numbers, year after year.

Want to see what all the fuss is about? We’ve put together our top tips for hiking in the Amalfi Coast, with some of our favorite routes and all the information you’ll need to start planning your trip. Add this spectacular corner of Italy to your hiking bucket list!

10 Epic Hikes In Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is an ideal destination for hiking, combining fabulous nature, fascinating history, and delicious local cuisine! This is a laid-back hiking destination, offering plenty of opportunities to relax, slow the pace, and admire all that the rich coastline has to offer. If you’re travelling with children, or looking for a relaxed hiking adventure, the Amalfi Coast is equipped with everything you’ll need, including pleasant, easy trails, passing between picturesque villages that are well equipped to take in visitors. After a hard day of hiking, there’s nothing better than kicking back in an Italian bar, looking out over the sea with a cool drink in your hand!

However, if you like your adventures a little wilder, it’s not too difficult to get off the beaten track in the Amalfi Coast. Indeed, some of these hiking routes will feel like a real expedition, requiring some way finding amid the lush undergrowth before you emerge out on to a deserted beach or small cove. There’s plenty to explore here, and enough to keep active hikers busy for weeks on end.

 • Bay of leranto Hike : The trail around the Bay of leranto is one of the most beautiful and best hikes in the Amalfi Coast. The small Capitiello beach is the ideal place to kick back and relax in the sun, as you admire the wave-carved rocks and the views all the way out to the island of Capri. Aim to head out on this short hike in the afternoon, when the trail will be quieter and you’re likely to have the beach all to yourself.
 • Valle dei Mulini Hike : The Valle dei Mulini is one of our favorite family hikes in the Amalfi Coast, with plenty of variety and history to keep young adventurers interested! The trail is lined with many ancient abandoned paper mills, where the famous Amalfi paper was produced for many years. Feel free to explore some of these eerie, abandoned houses, but watch out for the bats!
 • Monte Comune Hike : This wonderful hike is a fantastic way to experience all the joys of the Amalfi Coast. You’ll begin in the Sorrento Coast and make your way all the way to Positano, with views across to Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The views are simply spectacular, making this one of the best day hikes in the Amalfi Coast.
 • Monte Molare Hike : This challenging hike includes a steep ascent over some rocky terrain, but the views from the top are simply spectacular. The route passes through thick forest (make sure to wear full length trousers to avoid getting scratched!) and past natural springs, and the view just get better and better the higher you go.
 • Path of the Gods Hike : The Path of the Gods Hike is one of the most iconic hikes in the Amalfi Coast region, and with good reason. The trail passes along the side of the Lattari Mountains, with incredible views of the Sorrentine Peninsula, the Li Galli Archipelago, and the island of Capri. With turquoise water, plunging cliffs and picturesque villages, this is a classic Italian hike.
 • Punta Campanella Hike : This hike along the peninsula is a step back in time, passing by ancient Greek and Roman temples dedicated to the goddess Minerva, and a medieval watchtower. The island of Capri lingers in the distance, making up part of the beautiful panorama over the Bay of Ieranto. Make sure you come well-armed with sunscreen and hats, as the trail can be windy and exposed to the hot Italian sunshine!
 • Circuit of Tre Calli Hike : The hike around the Circuit of Tre Calli is a challenging hike, but the gorgeous views make it well worth the effort. The trail ascends steeply, passing through a dense forest before emerging at the top of the mountain. The panoramic views include the Sorrentine Peninsula, the Amalfi Coast and Cilento, as well as the Lattari Mountains.
 • Monte Canino Hike : This hike may be short, but it will certainly get your legs working, as the trail gains a large amount of elevation in a relatively short space of time! You’ll be accompanied on the trail by mountain goats, and some scrambling may be required on the steeper sections. However, the view from the top is stunning, taking in Naples, Mount Molare and Positano. Make sure you bring sturdy boots to enable you to tackle the rocky terrain.
 • Ring of Faito Hike : This lovely hike around the Ring of Failto has it all: lush forest, epic mountain views, and a vista that stretches all the way to the sea. This is a moderate hike with some fabulous views, although aim to come here on a weekday to avoid the crowds. On a clear day, this is one of the best hikes in the Amalfi Coast.
 • High Path of the Gods Hike : This hike is an alternative version of the iconic Path of the Gods hike, passing through some of the Amalfi Coast’s most spectacular scenery. This is a hike for adventurers, with dramatic rocky terrain and steep cliffs plunging all the way to the sea. It’s easy to see why this route earned the name of the Path of the Gods – the scenery is simply divine!

When Is The Best Time To Hike In The Amalfi Coast?

The Amalfi Coast is a year-round hiking destination, with accessible routes on offer to hikers whatever time of year you arrive. Summer promises the best weather, although temperatures can get very hot, especially on exposed trails, and July and August see visitor numbers soar. To avoid the crowds, but still take advantage of some good weather, aim to visit in May or September. You’ll enjoy sunny days and there is a range of activities on offer, but the trails will be significantly quieter. It’s possible to visit between November and March, and this can be a wonderful time to hike if you don’t mind a little cool or wet weather. However, many hotels and restaurants close during the low season, meaning that you may find fewer facilities outside of the big towns.

Other Outdoor Activities In The Amalfi Coast

Although hiking is a popular option, there are many other outdoor activities in the Amalfi Coast! In addition to trekking, backpacking, mountain biking and rock climbing, many visitors come here to enjoy the blue waters of the Mediterranean, and there are many ways to take advantage of the sea during your stay. From sea kayaking and sailing to paragliding, and even skydiving, there are plenty of outdoor activities on offer that will keep all active adventurers happy.

Frequently-Asked-Questions About The Amalfi Coast

How long does it take to walk the Amalfi Coast? The traditional walking route along the Amalfi Coast is around 40km long, and can be hiked at an easy pace over five days (or less, depending on how much time you plan for sightseeing).

Is the Amalfi Coast expensive? The Amalfi Coast is a popular tourist destination, and as a result, prices in many of the popular towns and villages can be somewhat inflated. If you’ve got the money to spend, there are many luxurious hotels and classy restaurants where you can splash out and enjoy your holiday. Best Hikes in Amalfi Coast

Path of the gods.

Without a doubt, the Path of The Gods, known to locals as the Sentiero Degli Dei, is the most famous hiking trail in all of the Amalfi Coast. Stunning views along the entire route make this hike a must for anyone in the area.

User Ratings

Punta campanella.

This hike is like a walk back into an ancient time. Along the trail there are remnants of old temples where ancient Greeks and Romans worshiped the Goddess Athena / Minerva. Have we mentioned the unforgettable views of Capri Island and the Bay of Ieranto?

Bay of Ieranto

Although this is an easier walk, this is one of the most beautiful trails you can hike on the Coast. You won’t want to miss sitting on the little Capitiello beach with a privileged view of Capri and its Faraglioni (wave-carved rocks in the bay) in front of you.

Valle dei Mulini

This is one of the easiest hikes of the Amalfi Coast, yet it’s still full of nature and history. Thanks to its short distance, this is a great trail to walk with the entire family.

Circuit of Tre Calli

If you love jaw dropping 360° views, the Circuit of Tre Calli is a must for you! Wonderful views of the Sorrento Peninsula make this hike special.

Monte Molare

Monte Molare is the highest point along all of the Amalfi Peninsula. Walking up the trail may be hard, but the view is worth the hike.

Monte Canino

This trail is a difficult - yet short - hike and we recommended it for people looking get their heart pumping and legs burning. It is a must if you're searching for a little adventure and a lot of jaw-dropping panoramas on your walk.

Ring of Faito

If you like long walks in the forest mixed with stunning mountain views and seascapes then congratulations! We’ve found the perfect hike for you.

High Path of the Gods

The High Path of the Gods is a less known variation of the famous “Path of the Gods“ route. If you want to experience the views of the Path of the Gods from a higher altitude - and with a bit more adventure - this path is made for you!

Monte Comune

Being one of the longer hikes in the Sorrentine Peninsula, this trail provides wonderful and unique views, going from the Sorrento Coast to Positano. This walk is a fantastic way to spend a day.

Many of the hiking days involve steep hills and lots of steps that you'll need to be able to walk up and down. Walking times vary between three and six hours a day, but the rewards are worth every step.
 • Summer temperatures around the Amalfi Coast can be extreme (up to 40°C), which can be uncomfortable. It’s essential to use sun protection, wear layers to combat the heat and drink plenty of water. Please consider the time of the year you wish to travel and your suitability to that season.

If you arrive early, maybe head out and discover some of Naples' impressive architecture and monuments, many of which date back to the Spanish rule of the 16th and 17th centuries. You could also check out the Royal Palace of Naples or head through the grand plaza to Museo di Capodimonte. After the meeting, ask your leader for dinner recommendations and maybe share an authentic Neapolitan pizza while you get to know each other.

 • Hotel in Naples (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

If your trip starts on a Thursday, Day 5 and Day 7 will be swapped to allow a visit to the Villa Jovis in Capri (closed on Mondays).

Then, take a scenic drive to the Agerola high plain. Along the way, you'll see views over the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast. After, head to the Pompeii archaeological site. Finely preserved, these ruins give you an authentic image of what daily life was like in an old Roman city with villas, temples, theatres and bustling markets. Walk along the chariot-marked streets that sat under the shadow of Vesuvius, until the fatal eruption in AD79. Visit the Roman Forum and Basilica, nearby temples, public baths and the tiny Odeon that was created for music recitals.

 • Hotel in Agerola (1 night)
 • Pompeii - Archaeological Site
 • Guided Hike along Vesuvius' Crater Rim and Summit
 • Pompeii - Guided walk

This morning, you’ll take on what has become one of Italy's most famous hiking trails – the Sentiero degli Dei (Footpath of the Gods) – which will bring you all the way to Positano. This path winds its way through unique scenery and boasts unrivalled views of the coast. Walk through forests and fields of wildflowers, past ancient stone huts and beside sheer walls of granite. Glimpse local farmers tending their crops by hoe and elbow grease, herds of goats feeding beside the trail beside their shepherds and teams of workmen commuting by mule. By late morning, you’ll reach Vallone di Grarelle, then continue to the hamlet of Nocelle – a picturesque village above Positano. Walk through the village to the Montepertuso Crossing – a deep gorge with limestone walls. From Montepertuso you’ll walk down the old steps, through olive groves and vineyards, to Positano. Continue to Amalfi by boat and take in the gorgeous scenery from a different viewpoint.

 • Hotel in Minori (Amalfi Coast) (1 night)
 • Sentiero degli Dei (Footpath of the Gods)
 • Boat Cruise Positano to Amalfi

Your walking time today will be approximately 5 to 6 hours or 7 to 10 km. Your luggage will be transferred for you, between Agerola and Amalfi, so all you need to take is your day pack.

Today, you’ll explore the gorgeous Isle of Capri, where Roman emperors used to holiday. Take a ferry along the beautiful coastline, passing the islands of mythical sirens from Homer's Odyssey. As you approach, you’ll be welcomed by cliffs and crashing blue seas (don’t forget your camera!). When you arrive in Capri, head out for a walking tour of all the local sights, then take a circuit walk passing Villa Jovis (the ruins of the most impressive Roman villa on the island, once home to Emperor Tiberius), a historic monastery and the winding alleyways of the village of Capri. Follow the untouched coastline and many impressive grottos (take some time to dip your feet in the water – the best way to cool off). Later this afternoon, take the ferry back to Minori for the night.

 • Villa Jovis Archaeological Site
 • Boat Ride to Isle of Capri
 • Capri Coastal Walk

Your walking time today will be approximately 4 hours or 10 km. The walk through Capri can be extended, depending on the group’s ability and desires.

This morning, you’ll hike to the village of Pontone through the Scala di Pontone (the Stairway of Pontone). This staircase is part of the network of paths that crisscross the Amalfi Coast, providing access between the coastal towns and the hillside villages. Once in Pontone, continue through the Valle del Dragone (Dragon Valley), characterised by its expansive views of the Mediterranean Sea. This valley is known for its dramatic landscapes, including steep cliffs, deep gorges and waterfalls. The lush vegetation, including olive groves, lemon orchards and Mediterranean scrub, adds to the beauty of the area. The name is said to come from the winding shape of the valley, which resembles a dragon's tail. After some time to refuel, head back to Amalfi and hit the beach for a kayaking experience along the coastline. Paddle along the coast towards Santacroce – a small but gorgeous beach where you can grab an aperitif before paddling back.

 • Hotel in Amalfi (1 night)
 • Kayaking to Santacroce Beach
 • Valley of the Dragon Nature Hike
 • Scala di Pontone hike

Your walking time today will be approximately 3 hours or 6 km. The kayaking activity is weather-dependent and may be cancelled in adverse weather conditions.

This morning’s hike from Minori to Ravello offers gorgeous views of the Amalfi Coast and you’ll be able to explore the small villages that dot the way. Begin your ascent towards Ravello, situated high above the coastline. This scenic trail winds its way through terraced lemon groves, offering panoramic views of the coastline below. When you arrive in Ravello, take some time to explore the hilltop village. Visit the historic sites such of Villa Cimbrone, wander through the streets and enjoy the views from the gardens overlooking the coast. From Villa Cimbrone, you'll start your descent towards the town of Amalfi. Take the Via Santa Chiara – a scenic path that winds its way down the hillside. After a day of exploring, retrace your steps along the steep mule track back to Amalfi. Tonight, why not find a spot with a view and tuck into a bowl of pasta to reward your efforts.

 • Villa Cimbrone

Your walking time today will be approximately 4 to 5 hours or 9 to 12 km.

After breakfast this morning, your adventure comes to an end. If you’d like to stay in the area for longer, just speak to your booking agent ahead of time. You might like to board one of the ferries that sail from Amalfi/Minori to Salerno or Naples. Alternatively, local SITA buses run to Sorrento, Salerno or Naples, where you can catch onward rail connections.

Dates and availability

Important notes.

1. This trip requires a good level of fitness and health, due to the varied terrain and potentially hot temperatures. Many of the hiking days involve steep hills and lots of steps that you'll need to be able to walk up and down. Walking times vary between three and six hours a day, but the rewards are worth every step. 2. A single supplement is available if you’d prefer not to share a room on this trip. The single supplement excludes Day 1 where you will be in twin share accomodation and is subject to availability. Please speak to your booking agent for further information. Please note that due to the small properties we use in Europe there is only a limited amount of single supplements available per trip departure. If you would like to book a single supplement and enquire about availability please speak to your booking agent. 3. Mt Vesuvius has become more and more limited due to strict capacity limits on the number of people allowed to visit at anyone time. There may be times when it is impossible to secure entry to the hike. If this occurs the activity will be replaced by a “Pasta Experience”,at a local “Pastificio” (pasta factory). 4. This trip has different Start and Finish Point accommodation depending on the time of year - please check the Accommodation section for further details. 5. Accommodation providers on the Amalfi Coast are experiencing unprecedented demand post covid. Therefore it is possible your group may be spilt between nearby hotels. Your tour leader will advise the details of this on day 1 (if your departure is affected). 6. Due to limited storage space on transport travellers can bring one piece of main luggage only (20 kgs max). It cannot be guaranteed that excess luggage can be transported, and fees may apply.

The 9 Best Hikes on the Amalfi Coast

hiking tours amalfi coast italy

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Italy's Amalfi Coast isn't all beaches, boating, and sightseeing. The rough terrain along the coast is laced with a network of hiking trails, ranging from easy to strenuous. No matter how challenging they are, they all yield big rewards, in the form of spectacular sea views, refreshing walks through shady woods, and the thrill of descending into one or more of the gorgeous seaside towns for which the Amalfi Coast is so famous.

For any of these popular hikes along the Amalfi Coast, be sure to pack sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, and plenty of water—those rules are valid regardless of the time of year you choose to hike.

For hikes that are not roundtrip, you can usually catch a bus back to your point of departure (or take a bus to your point of departure and hike back to the town where you're staying). Since many of these hikes end at the sea, it's nice to reward yourself with a swim in those brilliantly blue waters before drying off and enjoying a seafood lunch, al fresco. Amalfi Coast experiences don't get much more "Amalfi" than that!

Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei)

This most famous of all Amalfi Coast hiking trails and one of the top hikes in Italy, the loftily-named Path of the Gods runs from inland Agerola down to the shoreline near Positano, with epic views of the coast and distant Capri along the way. The 4.3-mile trail gets very crowded in the summertime when daytime temperatures can soar on this mostly unshaded trail. Start in Agerola and head mostly downhill to Nocelle, where you can take a swim then walk or catch the bus to Positano.

Valle dei Mulini/Valle delle Ferriere

Starting from Amalfi town, this hike, known interchangeably as the Valle Dei Mulini or Valle Delle Ferriere, quickly turns into a walk through a history-filled forest, past streams, and waterfalls, and amid the abandoned mills of Amalfi's once-flourishing paper industry. The 3.75-mile round-trip hike has minor elevation change and is mostly shady.

Punta Campanella Promontory

At the northern end of the Amalfi Coast, the Punta Campanella promontory separated the Amalfi Coast from the Sorrento metropolitan area. Composed of the Punta Campanella Marine Reserve , the peninsula is the most extensive undeveloped stretch of land in the region. The 4.3-mile hike from Marina del Cantone to the farthest point on the promontory takes about two hours one-way, but the views are worth it!

Monte Tre Calli

This short hike up to Mount Tre Calli is actually among the most challenging on the Amalfi Coast, thanks to its rapid elevation gain and unrelenting uphill climb. From the top, you'll see to Vesuvius and Capri. And remember, what goes up must come down—once you've summited, the walk back down to Agerola's Piazza Paolo Capasso will feel like a piece of cake.

San Pietro to Monte Comune

From the Castello Colonna event site in the small village of San Pietro, this 3-mile hike runs through fern-covered paths and open clearings towards the summit of Monte Comune, which towers just outside Positano. From there, you can take the same trail back, take a paved path down to the main road, or continue hiking down to Positano. Either way, the birds-eye views of Positano and the coast are outstanding.

Climb to Santa Maria del Castello

Mario Chianese/EyeEm/GettyImages

From Positano, this 1.9-mile uphill climb to Santa Maria del Castello is a steep, fast ascent that rewards with terrific views of Positano hanging off the cliffs below. At the end of the road, in minuscule Santa Maria del Castello, you'll find a welcoming bar. You can then take stairs back down to Positano, though your knees may never forgive you.

Sentiero dei Limoni

The little-traveled Sentiero Dei Limoni (lemon trail) is a treasured experience for those who hike it. The easy 2.4-mile hike connects the towns of Maiori and Minori, on a path that runs mostly through residential areas and, as the name suggests, amid the fragrant lemon groves for which the region is so famous. There are sea views almost the entire way. Locals have been known to greet walkers along the way, and even invite them to visit their lemon groves and sample some homemade limoncello.

Descending to Fiordo di Furore

At around 2.7 miles, the hike from Agerola down to the Fiordo (fjord) di Furore winds past caves, buildings that lay in picturesque ruin, several churches, and a mostly urbanized—though cute and charming—area. The hike is mostly downhill and gets more interesting the closer you get to the fjord, as you leave the main road and descend on a series of steps. The "fjord" is a little inlet in the rocks that ends at a pretty beach, which may or may not be closed depending on the risk of rockslides.

Walks from Ravello

All roads might not lead to Ravello, but it sure seems like you can hike from Ravello to just about anywhere on the Amalfi Coast. Ravello is set high and inland from the seafront, meaning hikes that start here go mostly downhill. On lovely, signposted paths from Ravello (or Scala, the town just below it), you can reach Amalfi, Minori, or hike to Maiori, all within about an hour. The views open up along the way, and in the summertime, you can reward yourself with a refreshing dip in the sea once you've reached your destination.

The remains of Rome's Colosseum, Italy | Sue Badyari

Walking the magnificent 'Path of the Gods' between Agerola and Positano is just one of the highlights of the amazing Rome and the Amalfi Coast on Foot walking tour. Walkers taking in the views on the Amalfi Coast | Sue Badyari

On the Amalfi Explorer walking tour, it's certain that you'll be exploring all of the best parts of the iconic Amalfi Coast. Take in the fascinating ruins of Pompeii, discover the historic centre of Naples (try some authentic pizza!) and meander the hiking trails of the island of Capri.

Also on this highly rated, 7 day, self guided walking tour, you'll have opportunities to swim in the Mediterranean Sea, walk around the charming towns of Agerola and the beautiful Ferriere Valley, and ascend to the crater of Mt Vesuvius. Classic Amalfi Coast - 11 Day Walking Tour

Rufolo Gardens, Ravello

The highly recommended Classic Amalfi Coast walking tour is an 11 day odyssey that follows the Footpath of the Gods and features some unrivaled Italian coastal hiking. On this self guided walk, explore at your own pace the idyllic villages of Praiano, Positano, Sorrento, Amalfi and Maestra dei Villaggi.

"A memorable trip. Beautiful coastal scenery. We walked through olive and lemon groves and ancient villages nestled in green valleys, among high terraces, with church bells tolling in the distance. Some challenging but rewarding ascents ( for a couple of septuagenarians), such as the trail up to the grottos above Praiano and the 946 steps to the San Domenico Monastery. The best part is that the walk was self-guided which allowed us to set our own pace, stopping wherever, whenever we wanted."

Classic Amalfi Coast - 8 Day Walking Tour

Passing Ravello, Italy | Sue Badyari

Following a similar route as the aforementioned tour, the Classic Amalfi Coast: 8 days walking tour takes in most of the beautiful sights of the Amalfi Coast, however this one finishes in Positano and does not include the boat trip to the Island of Capri.

The locals call this region 'The land of the Midday Sun', because it is a special land where the mountains, marquis pastures, lemon groves, vineyards and villages meet the sea. A place where you could be strolling on a rugged trail for one moment and then in the next be winding down through a citrus grove then through a pleasant village towards the blue waters of the Mediterranean, gelati in hand.

Classic Amalfi Coast - 6 Day Walking Tour

Boat ride in Positano, Italy. | Paul Amato

If you're short on time but still want to experience the stunning vistas of the Amalfi Coast, the condensed Classic Amalfi Coast: 6 Day walking tour, is possibly the best trip for you. This lavish holiday showcases the iconic towns of Amalfi, Positano and Praiano and follows paths to paper mills, nature reserves, gelato shops, churches and more.

5 Best Routes for Hiking on the Amalfi Coast (+ Path of the Gods)

 • amalfi coasat
 • outdoor activities

June 7, 2023

The Amalfi Coast of South Italy is a place of unparalleled beauty, with its rugged coastline, turquoise waters, and charming villages perched on cliffs. While many visitors come to the region to soak up the Mediterranean sunshine and enjoy the beach life, there is another way to experience the natural splendor of the Amalfi Coast: hiking . But where should you go hiking on the Amalfi Coast? And what time of year is ideal for a hiking adventure?

Discover sights and scenes you wouldn’t have otherwise experienced while hiking on the Amalfi Coast. Photo credit: Jakob Owens

The best time to hike in the Amalfi Coast is spring and autumn. The sun is strong in the summer and it can get very hot. No matter the season, be sure to bring lots of water and sunscreen. We also recommend bringing a bathing suit and beach towel — these hikes are along the Mediterranean sea, after all.

Insider’s tip: See our top travel essentials for a trip to Italy , along with a few items you can leave at home.

All of the trails below are accessible by car or motorcycle, but there are also transport options listed for each. For more information about getting around the Amalfi coast, check out our useful guide . Now, lace up your boots and get ready to discover the natural beauty of the region while hiking on the Amalfi Coast.

A must see on the Amalfi coast

Sentiero degli Dei, or “The Path of the Gods,” on the Amalfi coast. The name says it all!

Table of Contents

5 Best Paths for Hiking on the Amalfi Coast

Sentiero degli dei — the path of the gods.

The Path of the Gods is a popular trail that runs from the village of Bomerano to the village of Nocelle, above Positano . From Nocelle you can choose to take the bus or the long staircase (with amazing views) down to Positano. The path along the Bomerano – Nocelle section is well-maintained, and hikers will enjoy spectacular views of the rocky Sorrentine peninsula over the bright blue sea.

Along the way, you will see a wide and colorful assortment of wildflowers. Keep an eye out for the rare uomo nudo (naked man) orchid during the springtime—it gets its name from its unique petals that resemble, well, small naked men! Expect a relatively crowded path on beautiful weekend days. We promise it doesn’t spoil the view, though.

Getting there

Take the 5080 bus from Naples (90 minutes) or Amalfi (40 minutes), or take a Travelmar shuttle from Amalfi.

Trail difficulty

Moderate, rocky trail. Lots of downhill steps from Nocelle to Positano.

Hiking time

Bomerano to Nocelle about 2-3 hours. Bomerano all the way to Positano about 4-5 hours.

Sentiero dei Limoni — The Path of the Lemons

If you want a trail that’s short and sweet, then the Path of the Lemons is an ideal option for hiking on the Amalfi Coast. This trail winds through the terraced lemon groves between Minori and Maiori. It’s a relatively easy trail, making it perfect for families. There are about 400 steps to conquer at the beginning and end, but the hilltop views are worth it. You can start the trail in either Minori or Maiori.

Various houses and farm stands along the path open their doors for travelers, giving you a chance to sample some of their limoncello or fresh lemonade. If you end up in Minori, don’t miss the chance to go to the pastry shop Sal de Riso . It’s one of the best pastry shops in the region, serving not only luxurious pastries, but refreshing and delicious gelato , too.

Arrive in Minori or Maiori by ferry

Easy, paved path, with 400 stairs at the beginning and end.

Hiking along the Amalfi Coast in Minori, Italy

The charming town of Minori is a great place to begin this Amalfi Coast hike. Photo credit: Alessandro

Valle dei Mulini — Valley of the Mills

The Valle delle Ferriere is a nature reserve located above Amalfi. If you want to go into the natural reserve area with rare plants, you can get tickets from an infopoint in the town of Pontone. You can also explore part of the reserve for free by taking the Valle dei Mulini trail.

The trail takes you through a lush forest filled with waterfalls and streams. It’s the most shady and sheltered option on this list, great for those hot summer months. The trail starts in Pontone and takes you down through the valley towards Amalfi. You’ll encounter the ruins of old flour mills from the Republic of Amalfi, dating all the way back to the 13th century!

Take the SITA bus either directly to Pontone from Amalfi or bus to Ravello and walk from there (about 45 minutes from Ravello).

This is an easy trail along a dirt path.

Stairs from Minori to Ravello

Ravello is one of the most popular towns on the coast, and is another great option for hiking on the Amalfi Coast. Villas, gardens, and panoramic views of the coast…what more could you want? Most people take the bus to Ravello, but active travelers can take the scenic stairs from the town of Minori. The path climbs its way through terraced vineyards, offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and the rugged coastline. The path has over 1000 stairs — it was like the gym before gyms existed!

If you want to just go downhill, you can do that too by taking the bus up to Ravello and then following the signs back down to Torello/Minori.

Take the bus to Ravello or ferry to Minori.

Moderate if you do a round trip; easy if you just do Ravello to Minori.

Ascent 2-3 hours, descent 1-2 hours

Villa Rufolo, Amalfi Coast

The views from Ravello’s coastline are unparalleled.

Baia di Ieranto

The Baia di Ieranto is a secluded cove surrounded by rocky cliffs and lush vegetation, and can only be reached on foot. The hike to the cove starts from the village of Nerano, near the very tip of the Amalfi coast. The town is the namesake of the well-known pasta dish spaghetti alla Nerano with succulent fried zucchini. Try it if you stay in Nerano for lunch or dinner.

The route to the bay from Nerano takes you through charming olive groves and offers stunning views of the coastline and the sea. Once you arrive at the Baia di Ieranto, you will be rewarded with crystal clear water, so don’t forget your beach towel and bathing suit.

Because it’s near the furthest tip of the Amalfi coast, it’s easier to get there from the Sorrento side. That said, we couldn’t resist including it in this article because it’s such an amazing hike!

Take the SITA bus from Sorrento or Massa Lubrense to Nerano.

Easy-moderate dirt path, uphill on the way back from the bay.

2-3 hours round trip

Baia di Ieranto near Naples, Italy with water and grass

Soaking in the view of Baia di Ieranto is a fantastic way to cap off your hike. Photo credit: Thomas Möllmann

From scenic coastal walks to forest trails, the Amalfi Coast offers a wide range of hiking opportunities. Instead of sticking to the usual town sightseeing and beach visits, add some adventure to your itinerary with a hike up the hills. You won’t be disappointed.

Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

The majority of the routes on this trip are relatively short, but moderately strenuous with occasional steep sections. The most challenging aspect is the dramatic elevation change. We're often climbing or descending steps and cobblestone paths to reach stunning Mediterranean vistas and charming cliffside towns. While you're free to take your time navigating these routes, you should feel comfortable with some steep ascents and descents. Sturdy, lightweight hiking shoes with robust tread and ample ankle support are recommended. Backroads provides two walking poles per guest.

Our routes through this captivating terrain are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. In some cases our shuttles will get us to and from the trailheads, but due to the nature of these trails, we usually won't see our vehicles along the route. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.

Palazzo Ferraioli is a modest property with an ideal location in the town of Atrani. While this property is simpler than the typical Backroads standard, we've chosen it because of its proximity to our favorite routes and position on the stunning Amalfi Coast.

Amalfi Coast Cultural Walking Adventure

Image Gallery

On a launch approaching the Amalfi Coast at the start of our tours, you face a startling sight— like oversized rock climbers, gleaming villas cling with no visible foothold to the sheer cliffs. You have to ask yourself how…why? But when you swing open the shutters in your cliffside hotel room, the jaw-dropping view is all the answer you need. Situated on the "ankle" of the Italian boot, Amalfi has a balmy climate. Orange trees line village streets. Breezy seaside footpaths around Positano encourage a nice slow pace perfect for absorbing the atmosphere. We also settle in for two mellow days on the glorious island of Capri—one of our favorite places in Italy. We make time for Pompeii, and unlike most visitors, you'll see Amalfi in the best way—in the company of an Italian friend who knows the ins and outs of life on the edge of the sea. See Sicily, too! Our Sicily tour starts the day after Amalfi ends. Pair up the two for an amazing Italian vacation. Call 800.200.3887 for details.

 • Trace ancient footsteps in Pompeii, during a private, archeologist-led exploration of the city’s excavation
 • Experience Capri as only the locals do, with two leisurely overnights in a luxurious hotel overlooking Roman emperor Tiberius’ villa and the sparkling blue sea
 • Hike to a 14th-century monastery atop Monte Solaro for Capri’s most iconic vista: the striking Faraglioni rising from the sea
 • Walk through scenic fields of terraced wildflowers past wild goats
 • Follow a centuries-old footpath with lemon trees and waterfalls then stroll through the gardens of Villa Cimbrone
 • Walk along the aptly named “Path of the Gods” trail with its stupendous coastal views
 • Visit a tiny limoncello factory to see how the local lemon liquor is made
 • From Positano, follow the coast to a pizza-making instruction overlooking the sea

Caio Marcello and Anna,

Awesome, unique, fantastic, spectacular, wonderful some of the words we would use to describe the trip you planned for us. We had the most fun. Sicily is so amazing and we feel that we were able to see and enjoy so much of it. From Palermo all the way through to Taormina we explored. Finishing off in the Aeolie Islands felt like the crown jewel. Being in all of the cities interspersed with phenomenal hikes in all the Nature preserves was so rewarding. Every part of the vacation seemed magical. The hotels all seemed special. Our drivers took great care of us. Our guides in Etna and the Islands were the best. The Wine tasting was top notch. And the cooking class with Chef Massimo was beyond expectations. We look forward to our next Italian adventure with you and a special THANKS for the patience you showed us leading up to the trip.

Mille Grazie, Andrea and Jody

Cultural Discovery of Sicily – 19 days – May 2023

We are nearing the end of a magical trip that has been so well organized by you both. Then we get a surprise that puts it right over the top— a guide for our Cilentro villages and for the archeology site and a dinner!!!! Such care and kindness!!! We may never leave. You guys are fantastic! With great thanks, Martha and Pat

The Jewels of the Amalfi Coast & Cilento National Park – May 2022

“ Marcello/Anna Thanks we had a wonderful time and everything was so well organized with great hotels and excellent restaurant recommendations Ciao Tinus/Louise”

Cinque Terre Walking Tour – Oct 2019

“ Ciao Anna and Marcello,

Thank you so much for a wonderful trip to the Amalfi Coast and Cilento. All of the accommodations were wonderful and the views at each one were as good or better than the last. We had some wonderful experiences and saw so many amazing things, not to mention all the wonderful food and wine. Our cooking class was so much fun, but we made so many things and ate so much at lunch that we were not even hungry for supper that night. It’s hard to figure out which part I liked the best because they were all so wonderful, but meeting the two of you was certainly a highlight.

All the best,

Amalfi Coast & Cilento Highlights – Oct 2019

“Hi Anna and Marcello, I really enjoyed all parts of the experience that you put together for Pat and me. I never dreamed that I would have a chance to pat a water buffalo in Italy or visit a very interesting cave. It was wonderful! All of the people we met were very welcoming and helpful. Grazie mille, Ann Grybko”

Amalfi Coast & Cilento Highlights – Oct 2019

“ Two friends and I have recently returned from a tailor-made self-guided walking tour – Highlights & Backroads of Amalfi Coast with accommodation & private transfers included, the views are stunning! We spent 2 nights in the lovely village of Cava de Tirreni so we could visit Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii, 3 nights in Ravello with amazing sea views (my favourite) and then 2 nights in Sea view rooms in Positano. All the hotels and daily hikes were amazing and the day to day documentation provided by ICNOS was extremely detailed, as was other information such as restaurant recommendations and local area information. It was great having private transfers included so we didn’t have to fight the crowds trying to catch public transport or worry about moving our luggage from hotel to hotel as this was all taken care of. From the moment I made contact with ICNOS over email, I found them to be very professional and always quick to respond. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone who is considering a trip to Italy. Thank you so much Anna and Marcello for providing us with an amazing holiday that we will never forget.Leah”

“Hi Marcello and Anna! Jonathan and I had such an AMAZING time in Italy and are so thankful for your help to us on our trip! Warmly Jennifer Elkhouri”

Amalfi Coast Deluxe Hiking Tour – April 2019

“ Ciao Anna & Marcello, We are back home now, but full of life-long memories from our wonderful trip with you. Each day and destination were fantastic, and we wouldn’t change a thing. We continue to recommend you to our friends, and hope we will have another chance to travel with you. Yours, Mike & Dev Hellings”

Cultural Discovery of Sicily – 20 days – April/May 2019

“ We had the pleasure of a wonderful hike this spring, organized by ICNOS Adventures. Communication with Anna and Marcello before the trip was prompt and succinct. The cost was reasonable. Things we enjoyed about this trip: it was self-guided and the directions were clear and reassuring. There were often choices available for each day, and we enjoyed the variety of experiences. The accommodations were excellent- we had the best rooms, the staff were highly professional and our bags arrived at each destination without fail. The recommendations for dining were very helpful. The only time we were disappointed was when the tour was over. Well done, ICNOS Adventures!”

The Jewels of Amalfi Coast – April 2018

“ You guys were awesome! The directions were so complete and fun to follow; the hotels were all exactly what we wanted, the luggage transfers and drivers were perfect, and the materials you provided were very thorough. We had absolutely no complaints. You guys were also incredibly quick about responding to my e-mails when I had questions. We have done hikes with groups and leaders before, but for a place like the Amalfi Coast, this was the best way to go. Thank you so much! Linda “

Amalfi Coast & Sorrento Peninsula Walks – Sept 2018

“ We’re sorry to leave. Everything was great ( except for the weather yesterday). Thanks for your great assistance. Best regards Rochelle & Mark “

Cinque Terre Walking Tour – Sept 2018

“ Just finished 6 nights in the Backroads of Amalfi hiking adventure with my husband. This tour included 6 dinners as well. I had taken same adventure 4 years ago, with a friend, and have to say adding Sorrento this time was great. Hiking The Punta Campanella trail was a spectacular day, with amazing views. All our meals were a wonderful experience and really introduced my husband (his first time in Europe) to the joys of eating wonderful food in Italy. It was so fun to have Fortunato again as our driver, he is such a nice man, so pleasant to be around and professional. Having lived his whole life in one of the towns, he gave us his local knowledge which really interesting to us. We hiked every day, ate wonderful meals every night and had comfortable lodging to rest at night. Both times I felt the experience was so unique, taking the local buses, mingling in the little towns, getting to practice a little bit of Italian too; the locals seem to love it and so did we. Grazie Mille! Debbie and Richard”

9 of the best places to visit on the Amalfi Coast

Eva Sandoval

These are the best places to visit in Italy's Amalfi Coast © ValerioMei / Shutterstock

The Amalfi Coast – with its bougainvillea-draped fishing villages and rugged coastal panoramas – tops many a traveler's bucket list.

And with good reason: this 50km (31 mile) coastal stretch spanning the towns of Positano to Vietri sul Mare holds treasures ranging from colorfully tiled cathedrals to cloud-grazing hiking routes. But where to start ? Read on for our picks of the best places to visit in this stunning region of Italy .

An adult and child hold hands and gaze up towards a boutique shop at the top of a set of stone steps

1. Positano

Glitzy resort town Positano has come a long way from its humble fishing village roots, with the price tag to prove it. But even if you can't afford to stay the night – room rates often start at €350 – Positano's greatest riches are very nearly free, starting with the first sight of its pyramid-shaped cliffside expanse from the ferry.

You'll need sturdy shoes (and lungs) to explore this unique cliffside village, accessible only by climbing an endless series of staircases cut directly into rock. But you'll discover boutiques, galleries and restaurants shaded by garlands of blooms, as well as soaring coastal panoramas at the town's summit, where you can stop for an aperitivo on the terrace of the historic Hotel Le Sirenuse and gaze down at the Gulf of Naples with a Negroni in your hand.

2. The Path of the Gods

Now put down that Negroni and lace up your boots: the Amalfi Coast is home to one of Italy's most thrilling hikes. The Path of the Gods – il sentiero degli dei in Italian – is a 7km (4.34 mile) stretch of rosemary-perfumed Mediterranean shrubland, a staggering 630m (2065 ft) above sea level, seemingly suspended between the clouds and the earth. The trail's name comes from its mythical backstory; said to have been cut into the earth by the gods stampeding down from heaven to save Ulysses from the sirens' song.

The medium-difficulty trail has several entry and end points, but the most popular course starts in the mountain village of Agerola (Bomerano) and ends in Nocelle with a refreshing lemon slushie from the granita stand before hiking the 1700 stone steps down to Positano. Along the way you'll pass lemon groves, olive and chestnut trees and relish heavenly views of the coast.

Planning tip: Hit this trail in spring or fall or start out as early as possible during summer and winter months to beat the heat and maximize daylight. Trail shoes are a must.

A small sandy beach tucked into the crevice of cliffs

3. Furore Fjord

The "fjord" in Fiordo di Furore is a misnomer: fjords are formed by glaciers, whereas this craggy inlet was carved into the cliffs by the Schiato torrent. But the resulting secluded beach – crowned by a dramatic arched bridge – is no less otherworldly, and worth the hundreds of stone steps you'll need to hike down (and then back up) to get there. Arrive directly by boat or water taxi, or head east on the SS163 state road by car or 5070 SITA bus to the hamlet of Furore, where you'll find the staircase leading to the beach just outside the Marisa Cuomo Winery . Your reward: a joyous pebbly beach with crystal clear waters.

Amalfi , the coast's seaside hub (and namesake), is a beautifully walkable medieval village full of boutiques, restaurants and snaking alleyways to explore. Its splendid Piazza Duomo is home to the historic pastry shop Pasticceria Pansa and a dramatic 62-step staircase leading up to the Cattedrale di Sant'Andrea ; a 12th-Century Gothic cathedral and reliquary. Amalfi has also been a producer of artisanal paper since the 13th century as well as the region's main cultivator of Amalfi lemons.

Stroll down Via Lorenzo D'Amalfi – the main drag – to the edge of town, where you'll find Amalfi's Museo della Carta (Paper Museum), housed in an original 13th-century paper press, as well as the Amalfi Lemon Experience , a generational lemon grove where you can visit the town's historic lemon groves and sample artisanal limoncello.

5. Ravello

Head high up into the Lattari mountains to find romantic Ravello , with its exquisite 800-year-old villas and the most breathtaking views of the region. Just 5.7km (3.5 miles) inland from the coast, this tiny village served as a refuge from Barbarian invaders in the 5th century and has welcomed world-weary visitors ever since, from great artists like Richard Wagner and DH Lawrence to anyone hoping to escape the seaside fray.

Ravello's stone-paved streets lead from its lively main square, Piazza Duomo, to its stunning villas, Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo . The manors were each built over several centuries; notable for their various strata of architectural embellishments as well as their beautiful gardens and coastal views. Wander through Villa Rufolo's curlicued Moorish courtyards and get lost in Villa Cimbrone's rose bushes before stopping at the Terrace of Infinity to gaze down at the Gulf of Naples from 365m (1198ft) above.

Planning tip: Ravello is especially beautiful in summer when the gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo are in bloom and the Ravello Music Festival is in full swing.

iStock-527091143-RFC.jpg

6. Vietri sul Mare

Lemon yellow, forest green and sea blue are the color palette of the Amalfi Coast. But in Vietri sul Mare – the birthplace of the exquisite hand-painted Vietri tiles adorning nearly every inch of the region – that palette explodes to rainbow intensity.

Vietri sul Mare is the coast's easternmost village and an open-air museum in every sense of the word. Wander along its main thoroughfare to find ceramics lining stairways, storefronts and alleyways in a colorful blaze. Browse its ceramics workshops where artisans are hard at work crafting vases and tableware, or the Solimene Ceramics Factory with its distinctive colorful tiled exterior. When you've crammed your suitcase full of handmade ceramics, head down to the Villa Comunale, an "urban garden" of rainbow-hued tiled steps leading down to the sea.

Planning tip: When purchasing Vietri ceramics, remember: no two pieces of true artisanal crafts are ever alike.

7. Sorrento

Seaside Sorrento is on the Sorrento Peninsula at 30 minutes' west of Positano is technically not part of the Amalfi Coast, but its proximity makes it an easy, and obligatory, detour. Yes, it's crawling with tourists, but you'll also find layers of Ancient Greek, Roman, medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture as well as a thriving cultural scene.

Piazza Tasso is Sorrento's beating heart, adjacent to the town's cobblestoned ancient quarter with its enclaves of artisanal woodworking shops. Stroll past grand villas and through the lush gardens of Villa Comunale overlooking the Gulf of Naples, then peruse art exhibits at the Chiostro di San Francesco with its tranquil ivy-covered courtyard. Cap things off with an oceanfront dinner at Marina Piccola pier or O'Parrucchiano La Favorita , where you can dine in a lemon grove strung with fairy lights.

Planning tip: Sorrento is the birthplace of limoncello, but skip the mass produced offerings and head to the Giardini di Cataldo lemon grove, which produces 100% artisanal limoncello right in the city center.

8. Bagni Regina Giovanna

The words "swimming hole" and "Ancient Roman villa" rarely go together, except at the Bagni Regina Giovanna – found 3.6km (2.2 miles) west of Sorrento. Once the seaside escape of the Roman nobleman Pollio Felix, today the 1st century villa's sunken ruins serve as a natural swimming hole where ecstatic bathers dive off the villa's rooftop into the Gulf of Naples; a 46m (150ft) drop. The atmosphere is pure Pagan joy and utterly unforgettable.

Planning tip: Only visit here if you're in peak physical condition. The 600m-long (1969ft) cobblestoned path leading to the villa is extremely uneven, to say nothing of the ruins themselves – crumbling and punctuated by precipitous drops.

9. Baia di Ieranto

Also on the Sorrento Peninsula, this wow-worthy secluded cliff beach is a 45-minute hike from the village of Nerano. The trek starts out gentle but ramps up to medium intensity in the last 15 minutes, leading you down a rocky slope to reach the bay with an amazing view of the faraglioni (rock towers) of Capri . The vibe is sheer bliss, interrupted only by thrill seekers diving off the cliffs. The Sorrento Peninsula – particularly the Baia di Ieranto bay – is believed to be the land of Homer's mermaids, so keep watch.

9 Tips For Hiking The Famous Path Of The Gods

I thought I had experienced some of the most beautiful trails in the world, but that changed the day I hiked the Path of the Gods on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. At times, we wound our way through ancient farms surrounded by terraced vineyards and then suddenly emerged on the edge of a cliff with the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea visible as far as the eye could see. Up and down the coast were villages of pastel-colored buildings perched on the cliffs.

According to legend, this was the path used by the gods to rescue Odysseus, who had tied himself to the mast of a ship to protect himself from the deadly song of the sirens. What we know for sure is that the Path of the Gods is just one of many trails on the Amalfi Coast used for hundreds of years for transportation between villages. More recently, it’s become the most popular hiking trail in the region.

I had the opportunity to hike the Path of the Gods — and many other area trails — on a spring trip to Italy with Explore Worldwide . We spent a week exploring the region on foot, much like the locals would have done, long before motorized vehicles existed. In a week of wonderful experiences, the Path of the Gods was my favorite. Here are my recommendations for anyone planning to hike this trail.

My trip was hosted by Explore Worldwide, but all opinions are my own.

1. Choose Your Path

The Path of the Gods is an out-and-back trail hugging the coast, passing through a number of small villages. It can be customized according to your fitness level and interests, so take some time in advance to consider your options.

We hiked one of the most popular routes that begins in Bomerano and ends in Positano. If you’re staying in Positano, this can easily be reversed. Whichever direction you choose, this route is approximately 6.8 miles.

Some people prefer to begin in Bomerano and end their hike in Nocelle in order to avoid the hundreds of stone and cement stairs down to Positano. This will shorten your hike by at least a mile and it’s a nice option for anyone concerned about their knees.

Decide your route in advance and then determine how you will get to the trailhead and return to your accommodations. We took a public bus to the trailhead in Bomerano and had a private bus take us back to our guest house after enjoying a couple of hours in Positano. Public buses are both affordable and reliable in this region; just be sure to look up the schedule, which does vary throughout the year.

2. Train Properly

The Path of the Gods — or any hike on the Amalfi Coast — will involve steep ascents and descents and loads of stairs. You’ll want to train properly before your trip.

If you’re an experienced hiker, consider adding actual steps to your training routine. Anyone new to hiking will want to spend a few months on local trails that have plenty of elevation gain, in addition to some step training. I do hike regularly at home but made a concerted effort to find steeper trails. Your legs will thank you for taking the time to prepare properly.

3. Get An Early Start

You will definitely want to get an early start to your day to thoroughly enjoy the Path of the Gods. We rose before sunrise, ate breakfast in the dark, and were on the bus to Bomerano at the crack of dawn. It was all worth it. For the first hour on the trail, we saw no other hikers, only locals working their farms.

This trail can get seriously busy later in the day. That won’t ruin the experience because the views are still stunning, but parts of the path are narrow, so crowds could slow your progress. If you are hiking in the summer, an early start will also mean cooler temperatures.

4. Hike In Spring Or Fall

Summer is peak season for the Amalfi Coast, so if at all possible, plan your visit for the spring or fall. Temperatures will rise during the summer meaning the Path of the Gods trail will be both hot and crowded.

My visit was in late March, typically considered the start of the tourist season on the Amalfi Coast. Spring brings temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the mid-70s Fahrenheit. Fall is usually a bit warmer ranging from the upper 60s to the low 80s.

Many of the businesses on the Amalfi Coast aren’t open during the winter. While you could visit during this time, your options for accommodations, dining, and tours will be limited.

5. Be Prepared For Any Weather

With our early start to the day, temperatures were chilly, so I was happy to be wearing three layers — a lightweight long-sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, and a windbreaker. By the end of the day, I had removed two of those layers. With the varying elevations and proximity to the sea, temperatures fluctuate considerably throughout the hike. A month after, I returned from Italy a friend was hiking the Path of the Gods and experienced an entire day of rain. Come prepared for a range of weather and pack lightweight layers that can easily be shed and added to your backpack. And don’t forget the sunscreen since long parts of the trail are exposed to the Sun.

6. Bring Hiking Poles

My greatest surprise about hiking on the Amalfi Coast was the endless amount of stairs. Anytime I think of hiking I assume a dirt trail — which certainly existed — but we spent a significant amount of time walking up and down staircases. So in hindsight, I wish I had brought hiking poles. As someone who doesn’t use these much at home, I now realize they would have been helpful. Many in my group used poles and were happy to have them.

I’ve read varying accounts of the number of stairs between Nocelle and Positano — and I certainly wasn’t counting — but suffice it to say it was over a thousand. Hiking poles might have lessened the pressure on my knees, which were seriously sore after the hike.

7. Don’t Rush

While the Path of the Gods is a good workout, that’s not really the point. This is a hike where you’ll want to stop often and enjoy the views of the ocean below and the surrounding villages. While it is possible to complete the hike in 2 hours, most people allow 4. Stops for photos, water, and snacks are as much a part of the experience as the actual hiking.

8. Enjoy A Lemon Granita In Nocelle

Our group stopped in Nocelle to break for lunch and give our legs a rest. We gathered in the town square and sat on benches near the village church — a remarkably picturesque place to enjoy sandwiches.

Despite the idyllic setting, what was most memorable about Nocelle was Lemon Point, a small stand selling drinks and snacks. And while there was a nice assortment of beverages, I highly recommend the lemon granita — a tart, frozen lemonade perfect for tired hikers. The proprietor, Antonio, began this stand with a small folding table and umbrella but eventually built a charming stand decorated with the favorite produce of the region: lemons.

9. Relax On The Beach In Positano

If you’re ending your hike in Positano, don’t rush to the bus. Instead, allow time to explore the town. Some people complain that it’s a very touristy place, and it is, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

We had 2 hours to enjoy Positano, so I began with a visit to the beach. My hot and tired feet appreciated the cold ocean water for a few minutes. Then, I explored the streets and shops. If you are in need of anything decorated with a lemon, you’ll find it here.

Finally, I found my way to a café to enjoy a local pastry called delizia al limone . Sponge cake is filled with lemon cream, brushed with limoncello, and covered in a lemon and whipped cream glaze. I will long remember this amazing desert.
