Welcome to Halifax
P'jilita'q wla kjipuktuk.
Halifax is in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. The people of the Mi’kmaw Nation have lived on this territory for millennia, and we acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land. Historically, a land acknowledgment is a traditional practice shared amongst Indigenous groups to recognize the Indigenous land and territory they are visiting. Today a land acknowledgement remains a way to express one’s gratitude to the Indigenous people for being stewards of the land that we live and work on.

By Meghan Groff

This article is more than 5 years old.
Multi-platinum selling Canadian rockers Big Wreck are returning to the Maritimes.
They'll be playing Halifax's Marquee Ballroom on January 25th.
The band is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album In Loving Memory Of , which produced Big Wreck's first three Top 10 singles, “The Oaf,” “That Song,” and “Blown Wide Open.”
“It was obviously an important album for us because it was our first, and really put us on the map” said frontman Ian Thornley in a news release. “It will be fun to play a lot of these older songs that we wouldn't get a chance to play in another setting, and a great opportunity for fans to hear them live.”
Big Wreck will makes stops in Moncton and Fredericton before making their way to Halifax.
Tickets for the Marquee Ballroom show go on sale Friday, November 10th at 10 a.m. and are $39.99 in advance or $44.99 the day of show.

Big Wreck in Halifax
The Autumn air was crisp and the streets were abuzz as a crowd gathered in the Light House Arts Centre, ready for a night of great music. Having Big Wreck in Halifax may be a bit of a regular occurrence, but that doesn’t stop the band from selling out shows every time they step into our humble little city. They were joined by Ontario rockers Texas King, as well as singer/songwriter Daniel Greaves, for their North American 2023 tour.
Daniel Greaves
Due to a last-minute schedule change that started the show earlier than expected, I was only able to catch the some of the last song of Daniel’s performance. A solo performer sat with his piano, Daniel held the crowd’s attention with his haunting vocals and beautiful keystrokes. It was immediately clear to me why fans were so excited to have Daniel in town. I hope I get the chance to catch another one of this shows.
This was my first-ever exposure to Texas King and it lived up to the hype. This is a band that loves to be on stage. From the moment they set foot in front of the crowd, the group was ready to go, opening up their set with the title track of the 2021 EP release Changes . Frontman Jordan MacDonald was constantly on the move, bouncing around the stage to jam out with all of his bandmates. The energy within the band swelled along with the size of the crowd, never once pumping the breaks. Although I thoroughly enjoyed their original material, the highlight of the set for me was their cover of Post Malone’s song Chemical . Texas King definitely created a new fanbase for themselves in Halifax, and I hope they visit us again soon.
Packed onto the floor wall-to-wall, the crowd began cheering for Big Wreck the moment the house lights dropped. The stage flooded with purple and red lighting as the intro for In Fair Light , a track from the band’s newest EP set to drop this month, began to play over the monitors. The crowd erupted into cheers as the band walked on stage. The excitement in the room was palpable. After treating us to the brand-new material, they jumped right into one of my personally favourite tracks; I Digress , from 2014’s album “Ghosts.” Their set spanned across their entire discography, giving fans a taste of a little bit of everything the band has put out. Everyone in Big Wreck is mesmerizing to watch, and Ian Thornley’s voice is as strong as ever. The band kept the crowd captivated from start to finish, rewarding calls for an encore with 1997’s debut single The Oaf .
Big Wreck in Halifax is always a great time. They show their fans the love that we show them every time and always leave us wanting more. I’m already eager for their next visit to the East coast.

Hailing from Boston, US Big Wreck is a grunge-infused neo-prog outfit with a hard rocking sound, starting life in the early 90s having met as students at the Berklee College of Music.
The band formed in 1994, featuring lead vocalist Ian Thornley, guitarist Brian Doherty, bassist Dave Henning and drummer Forrest Williams. The band began performing extensively at various clubs and venues in Boston and Cambridge, US, becoming a prominent act on the local scene. Having developed a strong live sound, they eventually garnered the attention of Atlantic Records, who signed the band in 1997. Soon after, their debut album, “In Loving Memory Of…” appeared, featuring the top ten single, “The Oaf.” The band found commercial success in Canada, whilst also performing well in the US.
Their second record, “Pleasure & the Greed,” was released in 2001. However, unfortunately for Big Wreck, the album was a commercial flop due to poor marketing, failing to live up to the success of their debut. Following the record’s failure, the band ultimately broke up, with Ian Thornley launching a solo career, with the other members also being involved with new projects.
Ten years later, the members of Big Wreck reunited, embarking on a successful tour that helped reignite interest in the band. The band returned to the studio in 2010, recording their third album, “Albatross,” which appeared later in 2012. The album reached number five in the Canadian charts, prompting a nationwide tour that also saw them perform at Toronto, Canada’s Sound Academy for their ‘Official Super Bowl XLVI Party.’ Continuing their success, the band returned to the studio again for 2014’s “Ghosts,” also peaking at number five in the Canadian charts.
Live reviews
Once you Big Wreck, you can never go back. Every fan of Big Wreck knows what I mean. There is something special that happens after you've seen them live. You find yourself playing their music over and over and over again without thinking for one second, "Im over this song" or "I think I'll give it a break listening to them" because once you've been bitten by the Big Wreck bug that just isn't an option. I'm not a musician, nor do I have extensive knowledge in the art of music. I do however have a serious passion for music and I know great musicians when I see them. This band isn't for surface music lovers. The deeper the connection you have with music, the more you will understand. Each one of these guys is a master at their craft and it shine's at every show. You will never tire from the words of Ian Thornley set into song. The way in which the words are put into lyrcis is exquisite. When you listen there is a feeling you can see. You're left thinking damn, why can't I describe my feelings like that. There is no faultering in any live performance. Each show is full of energy and sounds amazing. I've seen them many times in one week and I can't say any show was better than the last. They are confident, consistent, and always deliver. If you are a true music lover, don't pass up an opportunity to see these guys live. Trust me, you won't regret it.

My fiancée and I went to see Big Wreck last night performing their first album, In Loving Memory Of, live at the Algonquin College Commons Theatre. The show was fantastic and the guys were ready to rock the small venue in Ottawa. The fans that came out got their money's worth with the band's raw energy and exceptional musicianship. This is possibly my 5th Big Wreck concert and they did not disappoint the large but intimate crowd. It was really an interesting mix of different generations, with babyboomers, Xers and millenials are out in numbers to appreciate Big Wreck's music. People were standing on their feet for the encore and kept clapping and cheering until the guys came back out on stage. Ian Thornley, the frontman, was consistently hitting all of the right notes with his powerful vocal chords. They are by far one of the best live acts I have ever seen in my life and I've seen hundreds of concerts. I count myself lucky and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to see them perform their craft once more.
Massachusetts rock outfit Big Wreck may have taken an exhausting eleven years between the release of their second and third album due to inter-band disputes and an indefinite hiatus. However since 2010 all appears well in the Big Wreck camp and they cemented their unity with a brilliant release 'Ghosts'. The sounds all appear heavier and therefore the band play with an even more invested energy as they tackle the hefty riffs and pounding bass lines.
Stepping onto a sparsely decorated stage, the band receive a mammoth amount of applause which they hardly react to as they are transfixed in their zone. After the first three raucous numbers lead singer Ian Thornley stops to thank the crowd for their energy and asks for even more before they perform early single 'That Song' which evokes roars of approval from the lively crowd. The energy stays high for the accomplished eleven song set which ends on the frenzied 'Oaf' much to the joy of the early fanbase.
good day we attended big wreck with 3 days grace at echo beach.where i highly recommend as a perfect live nation ambiance concert venue.lots of easy people, no uptight live nation security here!this was a likable bonus to keep our concert experience upbeat with n annoying security staffers ready to pounce on anyone having a extra good time.as for big wreck i love this band live but this performance altho good enough for most, was lack luster.vocals were lagging and out of pitch at times in most every song. the energy on stage seems that the band is bored of playing.the sound system was great but left out the volume needed in both guitars to make this band sound amazing as they sounded in the past rating 2.75 out of 5.the best ive seen big wreck was at jarvis corn fest a few years ago the energy was there then!bu was absent at the echo beach gig.
Concert was really good! Opening band was The Silence Factiry and they did a great job. They were very entertaining! Big a wreck was awesome of course! The venue was The KEE to Bala. The stage is about maybe 7 feet off the ground? Totally different venue The I had ever been to. It was very cool that the band was that high up so you had a good view from anywhere. My sister and I were 3 people back from the stage and it was awesome!!!! Our husbands stood at the back on the stairs and they said it was awesome from back there too. All in all it was a great concert! Great venue (wish we were cottages up there too) and a lot of great people having a great time!
The opening act, Jesse Roper was fantastic! It was great to have a local artist appear with Big Wreck. He got the crowd all fired up, but only got 30 minutes of stage time. A bit more from Jesse would have been great.
Big Wreck was excellent. They rolled through nearly a full two hours of some really great music. I would have liked to have been able to hear a bit more from the band as comments were lost in the crowd noise, but the music was just as great as it is on the album!
Definitely a bucket list show, I have been looking forward to seeing them live and they delivered a great show. Awesome choice in opening bands Texas Kings did not disappoint, I’m sure they earned themselves an abundance of new fans.
Big Wreck... amazing! Ian has such powerful voice! It was loud! Very loud but that’s what happens when you stand too close to the speakers But it was great. so glad I had the opportunity to see them live.
Port Theater is a great place to see a Concert! I had seen Big Wreck about 10 years ago in Victoria and this one was fantastic as well! Great sound, lighting, great Band. Thornley's voice was amazing. So Melodic was the atmosphere. One of the most underrated Bands in the Rock & Roll scene today.Top notch!
This band is even better live!! Ian is awesome to watch. You can really tell that all the members love and enjoy what they do. I think the energy they bring really makes their music sound 100 times better than just playing the CD in the car. I would definitely go to another one of their concerts.
Great show. My husband and I really enjoyed the Ascot Royals who opened the show. Big Wreck was FANTASTIC. The night would have been perfect if it wasn't for 3 very RUDE women who decided to bully their way up to the front when Big Wreck hit the stage.
