Thanks for the article. Visiting more Africa countries is on my bucket list. Do you have an article focusing on the best countries to visit based on different regions (e.g., West coast/East Coast)?

Hello Wayne, we do have a post on the best African countries to visit . However, it’s not ordered by region. If I were to pick one country per region, these are my recommendations:

  • North Africa: Morocco
  • West Africa: Ghana
  • East Africa: Kenya (this is a tough choice since there’re so many great options)
  • Southern Africa: South Africa (same as East Africa, many great options)

The reason I chose these countries is they have a well-developed tourism industry and cater specifically to visitors. A tip for South Africa, stick to the tourist areas, and you’ll be fine. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Dear Wayne, if you want to visit East Africa, the dream place to visit is Uganda. You will surely discover why its called the “Pearl of Africa”.

Perhaps it is the marriage of its innately synchronized wilderness, with the eccentricity of a refined cultural heritage, that makes the dichotomous landscape of Tanzania, truly one-of-a-kind. One word. Wildlife. The Tanzanian ecosystem is dominated by the world’s most exotic animals. Be it the zebras and giraffe, or the deer and the buffalo herds, or the feline lions and tigers, Tanzania is teeming with fauna. Its Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, boast the most expansive lands and the largest wildebeest migration. Also, these areas are ideal for birding as the country is home to birdlife of over 1400 species! These birding spots are counted among as the best tourist places in Tanzania.

The people of rural Tanzania, called the Masai, are a distinct tribe. Adorned in the most fashionable drapes and rustic accessories, the Masai people are admired the world over for their sense of style and ways of life. The restaurants here have a unique vibe of their own and as a matter of fact, are some of the most sought after eateries in the continent of Africa! Which brings us to the food. The Swahili cuisine, is Manna. Some dishes are simple, while others are layered in their gastronomic glory, but the flavourful food of Tanzania is unrivalled by another African cuisine. Finally, Mount Kilimanjaro is to Tanzania what the Himalayas are to India and Nepal. Its sweeping views, its terrain conducive to climbing and its wildlife, make Kilimanjaro another destination as popular as the Serengeti.

If you're enamored with the prospect of coming face to face with elephants, giraffes, zebras and wildebeests, then a safari tour through Tanzania's Serengeti National Park is the bucket-list adventure for you. The price will be steep, but a journey here affords an unforgettable African savanna experience. To save some coin, book one of the park's campgrounds instead of staying at a high-end safari lodge or luxury tented camp. Plan on arriving in January or February (calving season) or between June and October (dry season and prime migration time) for the best game-viewing conditions.

africa tourist places images

Outdoorsy types travel far and wide to admire this breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site. Straddling the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe in Mosi Oa Tunya National Park, Victoria Falls is roughly twice as deep and wide as Niagara Falls, making it one of the world's most jaw-dropping waterfalls . To see this natural wonder at its prime, plan a visit in April or May when the region's rainy season has concluded. Popular vantage points include the Knife-Edge Bridge, Livingstone Island and Devil's Pool. When you're not enjoying the view from above, go whitewater rafting in the Zambezi River to admire the falls from a different angle.

africa tourist places images

Most tourists head to Tanzania to go on safari, but you'd be remiss if you didn't save time for the country's other must-see treasures. In addition to its animal-filled plains, Tanzania boasts otherworldly natural wonders, including red-hued Lake Natron, Ngorongoro Conservation Area's expansive crater and Mount Kilimanjaro – the tallest mountain in Africa (and largest free-standing mountain on Earth). For the ultimate adrenaline rush, book a climbing excursion up the continent's famous mountain through a local tour operator.

Mauritius appeals to vacationers in search of a bit of everything. Though its main draws are its powdery sands and luxe beach resorts , this small island nation east of Madagascar also charms visitors with its mix of cultures; friendly locals; lively festivals and tasty teas and rums. After a day of exploring some of the island's nature reserves and soaking up the sun, retreat to one of its premier properties to savor fresh seafood while watching a traditional sega dance performance or the sun set over the Indian Ocean.

africa tourist places images

Home to cheetahs, elephants, lions, wildebeests, hippos and more, Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Kenya's premier spots to see wildlife. Sign up for a safari to explore this protected area's 373,000-plus acres of rolling grasslands. (Tip: Look for companies with guides certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association.) For an extra dose of adventure, opt for a horseback riding excursion or hot air balloon safari. To increase your chances of spotting the big five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes) and other migrating animals, time your visit between July and October during the Great Migration.

Zanzibar offers something for everyone, whether you're in search of beautiful white sand beaches or an unforgettable adventure. After trekking to this Indian Ocean archipelago off the coast of East Africa, you'll instantly feel at ease as you lounge on quiet beaches like Matemwe and Kiwengwa. Next, visit UNESCO World Heritage-listed Stone Town, where you'll find the ruins of a 19th-century palace and a graveyard with ties to Zanzibar's former Arab royals. And no trip would be complete without taking a spice tour in the countryside and exploring Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. As an added bonus, you'll find this is a surprisingly cheap tropical destination .

africa tourist places images

A grouping of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles has long attracted those looking for a truly relaxing, off-the-beaten-path getaway. Spend your days lounging on pristine, crowd-free beaches like Anse Lazio and Anse Source D'Argent, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Or, head deep into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Vallée de Mai nature reserve to gaze at its unique flora and fauna. Keep in mind that lodging here is expensive (especially at the luxury resorts), so it's best to save up and book in advance.

africa tourist places images

With numerous hiking trails, miles of dramatic scenery and stunning beaches (including one with wild penguins), this South Africa hub caters to both adventurous and laid-back travelers. Getting to Cape Town won't be cheap, but your dollar will go far once you arrive. Make sure you take the aerial cableway up Table Mountain, visit Nelson Mandela's jail cell on Robben Island and explore the world-renowned Constantia Valley wine region. You'll also want to save time to trek through the Cape of Good Hope, which lies 40 miles south of Cape Town on the southern tip of Africa.

africa tourist places images

Cairo can be overwhelming, as there's so much to see and do everywhere you turn. From Islamic Cairo's bustling Khan El-Khalili bazaar to the ancient Pyramids of Giza to the picturesque Nile River, you'll be immersed in this Egyptian city's history and culture before long. Though winter offers the most pleasant weather of the year (with daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s), it's also the busiest season, so consider visiting in spring or fall when room rates are lower, temps are bearable and crowds thin out.

africa tourist places images

Like other historic Moroccan cities, Marrakech buzzes with life: Performers vie for your attention in Jemaa El Fna (an open-air square in the heart of the Medina of Marrakesh) while vendors hawk aromatic spices, homemade textiles, ornate lanterns and more at the bazaars along the alleyways. When you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, unwind at a hammam, visit the Jardin Majorelle or head to a rooftop bar and relax before retiring to your riad. During your visit, keep an ear out to hear the striking tones of the nearby mosques' calls to prayer.

africa tourist places images

You'll spot plenty of animals – ranging from lions to rhinos to elephants to giraffes – in this massive game preserve in South Africa. Kruger National Park's network of paved roads makes it easier to navigate than Serengeti, and it tends to be cheaper to visit. However, its popularity (especially from May to October, which are the best months for wildlife viewing) means you're more likely to encounter hordes of visitors during game drives. Consider visiting one of the park's private game reserves for a more exclusive experience, and to ensure lodging, flight and tour availability, you'll likely want to finalize your trip at least a year in advance.

The habitat on the island of Madagascar is unlike any other in the world: Most of the landscape is unspoiled, giving visitors a chance to see animals in their natural environment. Travelers should look out for the country's signature animal: the lemur. Madagascar is home to more than 100 species of these creatures, as well as 11,000-plus plant species, including majestic baobab trees. Some of the best places to see wildlife and Madagascar's geological wonders include Isalo National Park and Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve. Despite its small size and landlocked location in southeastern Africa, Malawi draws visitors with its gorgeous lake, diverse wildlife and friendly people. At Lake Malawi, one of the deepest lakes in the world, travelers can enjoy water sports activities like kayaking and sailing, soak up some sun on a white sand beach or dive beneath the lake's surface to look for colorful cichlid fish. The tiny country also features nine national parks and wildlife reserves, making it an excellent less-crowded option for a self-drive or a guided safari. For the best wildlife viewing, arrive during the dry season, which lasts from May to October.

Adventurous travelers who dream of spending their vacation surrounded by nature will love Botswana. A less crowded alternative to nearby safari destinations like South Africa and Tanzania, Botswana has a strong conservation focus and offers ample opportunities to spot rhinos, elephants and more in protected areas like Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve, the oldest reserve of the Okavango Delta. Plus, adrenaline junkies can participate in all kinds of heart-pumping activities, including quad biking, mokoro (canoe) safaris and helicopter tours.

Kenya's capital city offers the perfect blend of urban pursuits and natural splendor. With museums highlighting its pre- and post-colonial heritage, bustling street markets and a thriving nightlife scene, Nairobi is a cultural hub. But its proximity to (and preservation of) wildlife is what makes Nairobi one of the world's most unique cities. The city boasts its own national park – Nairobi National Park, whose grassy plains host 100-plus mammal species including black rhinos – as well as wildlife conservation parks such as the Giraffe Centre and Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. What's more, scenery seekers can also visit the urban Karura Forest or hike the surrounding Ngong Hills.

South Africa in Pictures: 18 Beautiful Places to Photograph

Written by Carri Wilbanks Updated Oct 14, 2022

South Africa is home to some of the world's most stunning and diverse scenery all packed into one country. From the urban beauty of Cape Town , with its table-top-shaped mountain and dramatic coastline, to the red sand and wild beauty of a safari in Madikwe Game Reserve , South Africa offers so many things to do , and countless opportunities to capture beautiful pictures.

These images will make you want to grab your camera and hop on the next flight to Johannesburg.

1. Kruger National Park

2. cape town, 3. boulders beach, 4. camps bay beach, 5. madikwe game reserve, 6. wild coast, 8. garden route, 9. table mountain at sunset, 10. addo elephant national park, 11. muizenberg beach, 12. false bay: whale watching, 13. namaqualand in spring, 14. free state, 15. chapman's peak drive, 16. the amphitheatre, drakensberg mountains, 17. kgalagadi transfrontier park, 18. surfing supertubes in jeffreys bay.

Lion cubs at Kruger National Park

There is nothing like seeing a wild lion (or really any African animal) for the first time on safari. Even better if you stumble upon a duo, like these snuggling cubs in Kruger National Park .

Kruger is one of the largest game reserves in all of Africa and is famed for the sheer number of animals roaming around here.

Many of South Africa's top luxury safari lodges also border the reserve.

Aerial view of Cape Town

To truly appreciate Cape Town's beauty, you need to see it from above. This classic aerial shot of the city shows all of Cape Town's best assets in one image. The donut-looking structure in the foreground is the stadium in Green Point, constructed for the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer games.

Running along the coastline in front of the stadium are some of Cape Town's best beaches , like Camps Bay and Clifton . While in the distance, you see Table Mountain and Lions Head .

A penguin at Boulders Beach

Want to pose with a penguin for Instagram? This little guy is ready for a close-up photo. You'll find him and friends on Boulders Beach in False Bay, which is about an hour drive from downtown Cape Town.

This national park is the only place in the world where you can interact in this way with wild African penguins–feeding and touching is prohibited though.

Camps Bay Beach

Framed by the Twelve Apostles rock formations in the picture here, Camps Bay Beach, just outside Cape Town city limits, is truly one of the world's most beautiful beaches . While the water is icy cold–the current comes straight from Antarctica here–the sizzling summer temps mean most locals brave the waves for at least a quick cool off.

An African wild dog in Madikwe Game Reserve

In South Africa's North West Province, and right on the border with Botswana, Madikwe Game Reserve is a super special spot for a few days of safari. Operators like Jacis Lodges will take you into the heart of the private reserve to see rare animals like the endangered African wild dog. There are less than 5,000 wild dogs left on the planet, but Madikwe has a healthy pack.

Hole in the Wall on the Wild Coast

One of the top places to visit in the Eastern Cape , South Africa's Wild Coast is also among the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the country. Here, you'll find small hippie towns like Coffee Bay , home to the famous Hole in the Wall , with fabulously funky hostel lodging (all have private room options, as well as bunked dorms) and plenty of activities, from surfing to interacting with the local Xhosa people.

Whalebone Pier at sunset

Set on the Indian Ocean, Durban is South Africa's third largest city and a popular beach destination in summer–the water is much warmer here than in Cape Town, and you can actually swim without a wet suit. Walking along the beachfront promenade, known as the Golden Mile, is one of the top things to do in Durban .

It is also home to fabulous sunsets, like this one at Whalebone Pier at Umhlanga, which is just a short drive north of Durban on the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

Bloukrans Bridge

Running for some 200 kilometers from Mossel Bay to Storms River , the Garden Route is one of South Africa's most famous scenic drives. The route takes you up over the craggy mountains and down to the sea, where you'll find surfing beaches and towns like Knysna , known for its super fresh seafood.

Other things to do along the Garden Route include adrenaline-fueled activities, like the world's highest commercial bungee jump from Bloukrans Bridge. You drop a dizzying 216 meters into a gorge.

Table Mountain at sunset

Cape Town's iconic flat top mountain is dramatic any time of day, but especially at sunrise when the colors are striking. The 3,558-foot mountain can be summited on foot or via the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway when the winds aren't blowing too hard.

If you want to sound like a local, mention "the tablecloth" when you see clouds covering the top of "the mountain."

Bull elephant and herd in Addo Elephant National Park

There are more than just elephants alive and thriving in Addo Elephant National Park, which is South Africa's third largest park after Kruger National Park and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. But if you love pachyderms, you will love Addo, as it is home to more than 600 elephants.

Beach huts in Muizenberg

Home to the Instagram-famous, multi-colored beach huts, Muizenberg is also known for its surf scene. The beach town is on the Cape Peninsula, less than an hour drive from Cape Town. Head to Surfers Corner to meet the locals and ride consistently good waves.

A humpback whale diving in False Bay

Whale-watching along the coast near False Bay, also on the Cape Peninsula , is popular between June and November (but June is probably the top month), when you are likely to see humpback whales like the one in the picture here just offshore. During this time of year, southern right whales also migrate through the area.

Oryx among wildflowers in Namaqualand

In spring, the desert landscape around Namaqualand, in South Africa's Northern Cape Province bordering Namibia, comes alive with wildflowers. The flowers are a result of some solid spring rains, and people come from all over the world to capture colorful pictures here or paint the landscape.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is another one of the top places to visit in the Northern Cape , especially for capturing memorable wildlife and landscape images.

Sunrise in the Free State

South Africa's interior has vast tracks of rural farmland, like this photogenic location in the Free State, where you can watch the sunrise in utter silence and isolation.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is another top place to visit in the Free State to capture striking pictures.

The Free State is also home to Bloemfontein , which is South Africa's judicial capital city.

Chapman's Peak Drive

Running between Noordhoek and Hout Bay just outside of Cape Town, Chapman's Peak Drive is one of South Africa's most gorgeous coastal roads, and nearly every turn provides another gorgeous spot for photos.

This is a toll road, but it is well worth paying the fee to experience. On one side, you'll find the turquoise-tinged waters of the Atlantic; on the other, craggy peaks.

The Amphitheatre, Drakensberg Mountains

South Africa's Drakensberg Mountains are another photogenic hot spot. In the picture above is an area known as the Amphitheatre in the northern portion of the mountain range inside Royal Natal National Park, on the border with Lesotho.

To reach the Amphitheatre, you will need to hike. It is well worth the miles, as this is one of the most impressive cliff formations in the country.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

Remote Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park shares a border with Botswana and is located in the southern Kalahari. It is known for its stunning red and orange landscapes, which include dunes and green vegetation, and it's a favorite place for off-the-beaten-path safaris and capturing amazing images.

The majority of the park is in Botswana, but about 27 percent of it is found in South Africa.

Surfers enjoying Supertubes at sunrise

For surf photography it is hard to beat Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay. South Africa's most famous wave hosts multiple surf competitions and attracts some of the world's best wave riders.

The wave is a right point break that when conditions are ideal can give you a super long ride. It is only recommended for expert surfers, but anyone can take pictures of all the action. Sunset is a great time to capture some epic images.

Sights of Elektrostal: the history of the city, what to see, photos and reviews

Elektrostal is a fairly large industrial city, which is located near the Vokhonka River and almost 40-50 km from the eastern part of Moscow. There are a lot of powerful factories here, where many residents of Elektrostal work. They are perfectly combined with the most beautiful green boulevards, streets and parks, bright lawns and flower beds that adorn almost the entire town. It is picturesque due to amazing reservoirs and forests. It is worth learning more about the main attractions of Elektrostal, photos of which are in the article.

The city was founded in 1916 thanks to the construction of a metallurgical plant. Previously, this place was the natural boundary of Calm. To start construction, the labor of local peasants was used. In the middle of 1925 herebuilt the first railway line that connected Elektrostal with Moscow. After the onset of 1938, the village turned into a separate city.

It is noteworthy that during the Great Patriotic War, the Electrostal plants produced ammunition that was needed for victory. In particular, it is worth noting the production of the legendary Katyushas.

A new stage for the factories of the city began after the invention of atomic weapons. The local plant was on the list of the main production facilities of the nuclear industry. This led to the fact that in 1954 the production of fuel was launched, which was used for the operation of nuclear power plants.

In 1963, the cultural center "October" was built, and this was done by the masters of the Novo-Kramatorsky plant, named after Stalin. It featured a spacious auditorium that could seat more than 850 people, as well as a unique revolving stage for actors to change scenery in seconds.

At different times, eminent creative groups performed in this cultural center, as well as the Beryozka ensemble, famous at that time. It is noteworthy that even in our time the cultural center is actively functioning, and the square in front of it is considered the most beautiful place in Elektrostal with fountains operating in the summer. In mid-2013, it received the status of a city of labor and military glory.

There are many numerous monuments in the city that tell about the history of this amazing place: a monument to Nikolai Vtorov -the founder of the famous plant "Elektrostal" near the House of Culture, a monument to Tevosyan - the chief engineer, monuments to M. Gorky and K. Marx, a sculpture "Steelworker", a monument to Korneev - Hero of the Soviet Union, as well as a memorial and a monument to soldiers who died in Afghanistan and on North Caucasus.

This is a fairly large and old factory in the city that specializes in the production of fuel for local gas stations. The plant is part of the structure of the company FC "TVEL" of the state corporation "Rosatom". The General Director of the enterprise is O. L. Sedelnikov.

This plant produces nuclear fuel, which is used by many nuclear power plants, transport power plants and research reactors, not only in Russia, but also in other European countries. The company has quality certificates OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, ISO 9001.

The museum of the plant presents its history, shows old photographs of the streets of the city, there are achievements of workers, as well as photos of significant people, there are many of the most interesting models produced at the machine-building plant. It also stores presentations showing the principles of the enterprise.

This temple - a landmark of Elektrostal - is a single-dome centric church, which is made in the style of Byzantine times. It was erected in the 20th century, in the immediate vicinity of St. Andrew's Church. The temple was designed by T. V. Trubnikov and V. A. Drozdov, according to the developments of which the iconostasis and interior were exactly designed.

The church plays the role of a baptismal church and belongs to the Moscow diocese. The main shrines of the church are the most ancient and valuable icons of Nikandor Gorodnoyezersky and the Great Martyr Panteleimon. In addition, particles of the relics of saints are kept here. Divine services are held in the temple only during religious holidays.

the main attractions of the electric steel

The local park - a landmark of Elektrostal is an ideal place where everyone can stay alone with nature, ride numerous attractions, and also spend time playing slot machines. The park is especially popular in the summer - it is full of families, youth companies and couples in love.

Especially for the summer in 2013, the park was re-planned, which made it possible to accommodate more modern entertainment and interesting playgrounds for young visitors. Swimmers will love the dragon and swans, and trampolines have been installed for more active children.

It is noteworthy that the prices in the local park are quite affordable: the cost of a ticket for various attractions ranges from 30-100 rubles. Today it is called "Wonder Park", and it is divided into a quieter "Quiet Alley" and "Entertainment Alley", where there is an inexpensive cafe, a summer stage, and also quite a lot ofattractions.

sights of electrostal

This cinema is very popular, so it can be called a landmark of Elektrostal. It is located in the shopping center "Elgrad" and consists of 5 spacious halls that can accommodate more than 800 people. To show 2D and 3D films, only modern equipment is used: Dolby Digital Surround EX and MasterImage acoustics, as well as huge screens with a special coating. In all cinema halls, very comfortable conditions for visitors were created: climate control and soft chairs.

In the foyer of the Cinema Gallery there is a play area, a fairly spacious cafe, fast food establishments (Suneki, Tashir-pizza, Rostiks, Kebab-tun, etc.) and popcorn- bar. This is an attractive local leisure center, where the residents of Elektrostal are shown all the latest cinema.

This is a whole complex where you can spend your free time pleasantly and profitably. In addition to the playgrounds, which are fully equipped for playing laser tag and paintball, guests are invited to visit a local cafe where delicious home-cooked dishes are prepared, a banquet menu, karaoke, as well as a relaxing sauna with a warm font.

What do tourists who have visited the city say? It is not tourist, but industrial. Attractions are quite specific, but overall interesting. Tourists were pleased with low prices.

Looking at the photo of the sights of the city of Elektrostal, you may want to go there and spendunforgettable weekend.
