When to choose a clothes steamer

Lightweight, portable, easy to store and great for travel, a clothes steamer smooths fabrics right on the hanger. Many now have big water tanks and multiple settings for more power. Some steam continuously, while others do so when you press a trigger or button. They are a great option if you often need to smooth one item before heading out the door and mostly wear clothing with an unstructured, casual feel.

Having both a clothes steamer and a steam iron gives you the most options for achieving smooth, wrinkle-free clothes no matter what the fabric or style. If you need to make an either-or decision, clothes steamers are stellar for on-the-go de-wrinkling and giving garments a flowy, relaxed look and feel. An iron is your best bet if you prefer a flat, crisp, sharp vibe or frequently sew, quilt or do other crafts requiring strong steam, heat and pressure.

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Cleaning Lab, we dedicate hours to evaluating each steamer and iron we test. We measure the grams of steam they produce and at what rate they pump it out. We take temperatures in various spots on each iron's soleplate at several heat settings and track the high and low temperature swings as it heats up and cools down. For both appliances, we check how hot the handles and bodies get, for safety.

We weigh the appliances to determine how heavy they are to lift and hold, assess how user-friendly the controls are, how easy the water tank is to fill and see into and how long they take to heat up.

Finally, we twist and ball up cotton, linen, wool, silk, nylon and other synthetic fabrics and garments and allow the creases to set overnight. The next day, we iron or steam the swatches and garments, rating the smoothness using standard visual guides borrowed from the textiles industry all while checking for any spitting, spotting or dripping.

✔️ Water tank: If you expect to steam often or do several garments in one session, look for a large water tank for a longer steam time and a model that offers continuous steam over one that requires you to press a button to pump out the steam. The water tank should also be easy to remove, fill, replace and see through so you know when it needs refilling.

✔️ Design: If you will use the steamer occasionally or just for travel, consider a slim model that's compact, lightweight and easy to pack and store. Many mid-size handheld models now have small heated plates that mimic an iron's soleplate and give you the option to steam or press out wrinkles. Large professional steamers — the kind that magazine photos stylists use — have extra-large tanks for super long steam times, telescoping poles and hooks for holding garments. They can be wheeled to where you need them, but they do take up more storage space.

✔️ Water type: Most use regular tap water, but some brands recommend distilled, especially if your tap water is extremely hard. Check the product's use and care guide on the brand website for details on the type of water it requires.

✔️ Features: Steamers that offer multiple settings work best on both delicate and heavy fabrics. Attachments may include lint remover pads, brushes to fluff fabrics and protectors to shield delicate fabrics from hot steam. Some have on-board clamps to help set creases and pleats.

✔️ Size: An iron should be comfortable to lift and hold and not so heavy that it becomes a chore to use. Most fall within a range from about 2 pounds to almost 5 pounds. The heavier they are, the better they press out wrinkles, but a too-heavy iron makes ironing tiresome. To cover more ground quickly, choose an iron with a large soleplate and a large, see-through water tank.

✔️ Power: Generally, we've found that the best-performing irons require 1,700 to 1,800 watts of power to produce strong and long bursts of steam. Cordless irons are an option many prefer but they cool off quickly and need to be put back on the corded base every time you reposition the garment. Electronic controls in higher-end irons help ensure more precise fabric temperature settings and selections.

✔️ Soleplate: Ceramic and titanium soleplates are the most durable, provide the best glide and are easiest to clean. Stainless steel and non-stick work well when new, but can scratch and ultimately snag fabrics over time. And more holes in the soleplate don't guarantee more steam from the iron.

✔️ Safety: Most irons today automatically shut off in seconds or minutes when tipped. We prefer those that turn off quickly when landing in any direction, not just onto the soleplate. Some, designed for sewing and quilting, delay or don't shut off at all to help make crafting easier.

✔️ Features: Steam burst and spray features are helpful to dampen fabrics while ironing and for extra oomph removing stubborn wrinkles. Vertical steam works well for drapes, bed skirts and other home furnishings, though we've found a clothes steamer is actually more effective than an iron when used vertically. A steam station with a large, separate water tank, powerful steam and a sturdy base is good for quilting, sewing and handling big batches of rumpled garments. Nice extras include a button groove around the soleplate to iron around buttons and a retractable cord for easy storage.

Most fabrics handle steaming well. Even sheer, delicate ones, like silk can take light steam. Some fabrics like velvet, corduroy and lace do better with steaming than with ironing, as steaming doesn't flatten them like ironing can. The only fabrics where it's best to avoid steam — from a clothes steamer or an iron — are vinyl, fabrics with a waxy finish or garments with thin plastic trim or embellishments that steaming could melt. Steam leather and suede very carefully, if at all.

Yes! In fact, we recommend steaming to help freshen and deodorize hard-to-wash items like mattresses, throw pillows, athletic shoes and stuffed toys. Just be sure to pass the steamer over the fabric surface slowly for the time recommended by the manufacturer to sanitize fabrics. Steam also kills dust mites near the surface. After steaming, you must remember to vacuum the fabric surface to remove them.

When Vladimir Putin announced Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine in February 2022, he included a complaint about America’s self-regard. “Where does this insolent manner of speaking from the position of your own exceptionalism, infallibility and all-permissiveness come from?” the Russian president asked.

There was nothing new in Putin’s protestation. Throughout the cold war, the Soviets craved recognition from the Americans and were hypersensitive to perceived slights. Putin infamously described the dissolution of the USSR as the “greatest geopolitical tragedy of the 20th century”. By this he meant the end of the Russian imperium, not Soviet communism. If America could not freely give the respect that Russia so yearned for, it would have to be won by force of arms.

As Sergey Radchenko shows in To Run The World , his masterful new history of the cold war, Putin’s psychology is very much in keeping with that of his Soviet predecessors. This psychology includes injured pride and an unquenchable sense of insecurity.

Ironically it was Putin’s decision to open up the Soviet archives over the past decade — an act of radical transparency that reflected Putin’s obsession with Russian history — that enabled Radchenko to reach these conclusions. His move made available a “full-blown deluge” of Soviet documents and personal papers after years in which historians had to make do with a trickle. This gave him access to a stream of consciousness of the USSR’s most senior officials spanning the period from Joseph Stalin to Mikhail Gorbachev.

The result is a revisionist history of the cold war that downplays ideology as Moscow’s guiding motive. This marks quite a departure from most cold war histories, which pay more attention to that than national character. “Marxist-Leninism itself does not get us very far in understanding Soviet behavior,” Radchenko writes. “It was an ill-fitting cloth that never adequately draped the incongruent outlines of Moscow’s ambitions.”

What were — and are — those ambitions? The simplest answer would be to secure western recognition for Russia’s great power status. In 1944, Stalin got Winston Churchill’s acquiescence to Moscow’s sphere of influence when they scribbled country-by-country percentages for central and eastern Europe on a napkin. Hungary and Yugoslavia were each divided 50:50, while Greece was skewed 90:10 to Britain, and Romania 90:10 to the Soviets.

Their cynical bargain was formalised in the notorious Yalta Conference of 1945. The near-fatal decision by Nikita Khrushchev, Stalin’s successor, to station Soviet intermediate nuclear missiles in Cuba in 1962 was prompted less by war-making plans than by a desire for parity with the US, which stationed missiles at several bases close to the border of the USSR. John F Kennedy defused the crisis by quietly removing US missiles from Turkey. In addition to equal status, Moscow had wanted to throw “our hedgehog in the Americans’ pants”, in the words of one Soviet official.

In spite of the Vietnam war, the 15 years following that near-miss in Cuba were the heyday of east-west détente. This was as close in history as Moscow has come to achieving the respect that it believes is its due. Humanity had entered a bipolar world in which the USSR was one of the poles. Yet this period was all too fleeting.

Khrushchev, whose antics had become an embarrassment, was removed in a Politburo coup in 1964. After a bout of Kremlin machinations, chiefly involving the sidelining of his Politburo rival Aleksei Kosygin, Leonid Brezhnev emerged as the first among equals. Détente survived the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 mainly because Washington wanted Moscow to help extricate it from its quagmire in Vietnam. The Soviets never did. Détente also survived Richard Nixon’s 1972 opening to China, which played heavily on Brezhnev’s paranoia about the threat from the east. Indeed, Nixon’s China move only redoubled Brezhnev’s efforts to pacify the USSR’s western flank by cementing détente.

Fascinatingly, Radchenko reveals that Brezhnev even had a racial motivation for the policy, believing that the European races should stick together. “As President Nixon once said,” Brezhnev recounted, “you can destroy us seven times over, and we can destroy you seven times over. I told him in response that after this happens, the whites will be gone, only the blacks and the yellows will remain.”

Yet détente’s golden age never quite lived up to Moscow’s dreams. Though Henry Kissinger, Nixon’s acrobatic national security adviser, mused about a joint US-Soviet “condominium”, and the superpowers pledged non-interference in each other’s domestic affairs, the USSR could not bring itself to abandon its revolutionary credentials. Soviet adventurism in Angola, the Horn of Africa, Portugal and ultimately in Afghanistan, which it invaded in December 1979, tipped US public opinion against détente.

Radchenko skilfully and vividly depicts a gerontocratic Politburo that wanted nuclear stability without relinquishing their freedom to pick up client states in what was then often called the “third world” (the Soviet bloc being the “second world”). Here again, this was as much a question of Russian self-esteem as Marxist-Leninist ideology. Since the US had client states all over the world, the Soviets should too. But these proved to be highly expensive. As Radchenko points out, Moscow’s backing of Vietnam’s communists almost broke the bank. Hanoi never repaid its debts.

If I have one quibble with Radchenko’s otherwise indispensable book, it is that he underplays the effects of US President Jimmy Carter’s weaponisation of human rights behind the Iron Curtain. (In full disclosure, I am writing a biography of Zbigniew Brzezinski, Carter’s national security adviser, and Kissinger’s great rival.) Kissinger saw the USSR as a permanent fixture on the landscape. Brzezinski saw the USSR’s nationalities and the Warsaw Pact satellite states as its Achilles heel. The latter turned out to be correct.

As Radchenko lays out, the USSR’s demise in 1991 came with a whimper, not a bang, in the guise of its final leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, who became the last general secretary of the Soviet Communist party in 1985.

As an émigré Russian scholar — teaching at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington and at Cardiff University — Radchenko is well placed to describe what has happened since the USSR’s dissolution in 1991. He vividly depicts the “clean-shaven gorillas in Adidas pants” who made their fortunes in the Moscow wild west of the 1990s.

This was also the era of Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin. As one of Radchenko’s colleagues, Mary Elise Sarotte , memorably observed, Yeltsin’s fondness for vodka was deemed a price worth paying: “Yeltsin drunk was better for the United States than most other Russian leaders sober”. But then came Putin. The rest is current affairs.

Radchenko’s conclusion is bleak because it is persuasive. Starring Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Fehinti Balogun, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Leah Harvey, and Johnny Harris in pivotal roles, ' A Gentleman in Moscow' revolves around Rostov and his journey of resilience, adaptation, and survival while confined within the Metropol Hotel.

Based on Amor Towles' bestselling novel of the same name, the series presents a captivating story set against the tumultuous backdrop of Russian history.

Sofia leaves the Metropol Hotel to embrace a new future

In ' A Gentleman in Moscow ' Episode 8, Richard (Lucian Msamati), an American diplomat residing at the Metropol Hotel, seeks Rostov's help in gathering intelligence at a crucial meeting where officials will choose the next leader.

In return for spying on the meeting's attendees, Richard offers to take Sofia (Beau Gadsdon) to the United States, giving her a chance at a new beginning. In Episode 8 of 'A Gentleman in Moscow', Sofia finally leaves the hotel.

Rostov informs Sofia that after her performance in Paris, arrangements have been made for her to be taken to the U S Embassy. From there, she will have the opportunity to travel to the United States and begin a new life.

This plan subtly indicates that Richard may have played a significant role in facilitating this fresh start for Sofia.

After her performance in Paris, Sofia cuts her hair short and dresses in boys' clothes, adopting a disguise to avoid detection.

With her new appearance, she discreetly leaves the venue, representing her determination to leave her past behind and embrace a future full of possibilities.

Alexander Rostov finally achieves freedom from the confines of the Metropol Hotel

As the episode progresses, Rostov engages in a conversation with Anna Urbanova (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) about the possibility of using two passports to travel to Finland. They dance around, cherishing the moments they have together.

However, Osip Glebnikov (Johnny Harris) intervenes and stops Rostov from executing his plan. He reveals that the authorities have their eyes on Rostov and warn that any attempt to use the passports to travel to Finland could result in harm to his family members.

On the other hand, The Bishop (John Heffernan) has taken the passports because he knows it was stolen. Rostov goes to his room with a gun and blackmails him to give back the passports.

Rostov, aware of the dangers posed by the authorities who are closely monitoring his movements, decides to take a cautious approach. He entrusts Osip with the crucial task of delivering the passport to Anna.

Anna cries when she realizes that Rostov will never come. The hope she had clung to, the belief that they would be reunited, is shattered in an instant.

However, in the last scene, Rostov realizes that the authorities are no longer watching him. Rostov steps out of the confines of the Metropol Hotel, symbolizing his freedom from the restrictions that have bound him for so long.

However, it is left ambiguous whether Rostov reunites with Anna. In the last scene, through Sofia's imagination, viewers see Rostov and Anna living together. This dream-like sequence hints at a possible reunion between the two characters.
