Top-40 2025 recruit Dorian Jones felt love while on Ohio State official visit

college visit ohio state

There wasn’t a whole lot for Dorian Jones to learn about Ohio State on his most recent visit.

Instead, last week’s official visit for the top-40 prospect from Richmond Heights, Ohio, was reminded of a few things he said he already knows about the Buckeyes.

“The visit was pretty good,” he said. “It was a good experience, but I’ve been down there a couple times so I’ve pretty much seen everything. But the love from the coaches and everyone was just amazing.”

Ohio State has long been in the picture for the 6-4, 190-pound combo guard . The Buckeyes offered him following his freshman season, becoming only the fifth school to do so after Cleveland State, Toledo, Cincinnati and Arizona State, and he has taken multiple unofficial visits to campus during the last several years.

This official visit, though, came with Jake Diebler as coach. Diebler had been Jones’ primary recruiter for Ohio State under coach Chris Holtmann, and the prospect in the class of 2025 said their relationship has remained unchanged as he has moved into the head coaching position.

“Our relationship was always tight,” Jones said. “(Now he’s) just like a normal head coach. Caring, worrying about how I’m getting better and me staying in the gym. Things of that nature.”

With Diebler in charge, Ohio State made it clear to Jones that the Buckeyes were “re-offering” him a scholarship.

“They didn’t take long at all,” Jones said. “It was constant ever since Holtmann left and when he was still there. It means a lot because that once again shows the love that they’ve got for me.”

This visit, with the new Ohio State staff, “was just a lot more love,” he said. “Just them worrying about me as a person. Instead of growing as a basketball player, just worrying about me growing as a person, as a man.”

Jones said the coaches did work with him on different angles to take on the floor to be more dangerous without the ball in his hands, something he pointed to as a focal point of his summer focus.

As a junior, Jones earned first-team all-Ohio honors in Division IV after averaging 14.1 points and helping Richmond Heights win a state championship. In the 62-35 win against Berlin Hiland, Jones had 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting and added three rebounds, two steals and one assist in 25:04. Jones is a four-star prospect, the No. 37 national player in his class, the No. 5 shooting guard in the nation and the No. 2 player from Ohio in the 2025 class according to 247Sports.com.

Jones has taken official visits to Missouri and Rutgers prior to his Ohio State visit. While in Columbus, Jones said he went to dinner with the coaching staff, worked out, met the new members of the coaching staff and spent time with some of the current players. He’s familiar with Devin Royal, who will be a sophomore in 2024-25 , after both played for the All-Ohio Red AAU program.

As he resumes AAU basketball, Jones said he has another official scheduled. On June 4, he will head to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to visit newly hired coach Dusty May and check out the Wolverines. The two have just started building a relationship, Jones said, leading to him scheduling a visit.

Asked what he looks for while on visits, Jones said, “I’m really big on relationships, and the love they show me and my peoples.”

Jones said he doesn’t have a timeframe in mind for when he hopes to pick a school. With more visits possible, Jones said the recruiting process has not been too challenging for him to manage.

“It’s not stressful,” he said. “You go with who wants you for who you are and who loves you. It’s not stressful as long as you know what you’re doing.”

As Jerry Easter II continues to rise in rankings, Ohio State to host official visit

college visit ohio state

Jerry Easter II’s rise in the basketball world has been anything but an overnight process. It’s been a steady grind that has taken Easter from a Division IV school in Northwest Ohio to one of the nation’s top prep schools and now a national top-20 ranking in the class of 2025.

But there was a recent day where his mother, Trena Cook-Easter, had to text her husband about the steady stream of stories being written about their son.

“I was at work and some people started sending me articles on Jerry and of course I don’t really have time to read that throughout the day with my busy schedule, but when I got off work I texted my husband and said, ‘Seems like social media is loving our son, like really, really loving him,’ ” she said. “My husband replied back, ‘Man.’ We thought it was really busy the start of his final EYBL season, but it’s really, really gone up.”

That’s become the new normal for Easter II, ranked No. 20 in 247Sports.com’s rankings for the 2025 class. Listed as a 6-3, 200-pound combo guard, Easter debuted at No. 48 in the rankings in September 2022 before starting his sophomore season at Emmanuel Christian. After averaging 32.3 points and 7.5 rebounds for the Warriors that season, he weighed his options and committed to La Lumiere, the perennial prep school power in La Porte, Indiana.

There, he led the team at 18.2 points per game in Nike EYBL Scholastic play against the other members of the 14-team league featuring prep schools from across the nation. In the process, Easter has solidified himself as one of the nation’s top-rated prospects.

“I think that the player Jerry was at Emmanuel and the player he is at La Lumiere, it’s really no comparison,” Cook-Easter said. “He’s more on a set schedule and it’s almost like he’s in college. I love the head coach (Pat Holmes). He pushes Jerry to points where Jerry probably didn’t even know he could reach. He requires a lot, and it’s only because he's getting him ready for the next level.”

Ohio State Buckeyes: Top-40 2025 recruit Dorian Jones felt love while on Ohio State official visit

With that has come increased recruiting attention, but his mother said Easter II is in no hurry to figure out his next stop.

“He’s going to take his time and pick the right school,” she said. “He’s not going to get rushed by anyone. That includes family, friends, of course coaches, but he’s enjoying the process.”

Being patient is a trait Cook-Easter said her son has long possessed, describing him as a “very quiet individual” but one who “is very much a thinker.” That is allowing him to take the whole recruiting situation in stride, she said.

“I know that when he makes his decision, it’s going to be the right decision because he’s looking at everything,” she said. “He’s looking at the coaches. He’s looking at the fans. He’s looking at the student body. He’s looking at the campus. I’m very proud of him that he just knows what he wants and he knows what he’s looking for and he’s going to make us all wait until he’s ready to release what school he’s going to.”

Easter is a four-star prospect and the No. 20 national player in both the 247Sports and ESPN rankings for 2025. ESPN ranks him as the No. 6 point guard in the nation and 247Sports as the No. 6 combo guard.

He has taken official visits to Georgia Tech and Oregon, but more are planned for the fall. A decision will follow, his mother said, and relationships are among the most important factors the family will weigh in picking a school.

“First of all, we look at the coach to see what type of relationship that coach has with his players at the current time, because that gives us insight on what type of coach that he’ll be to Jerry,” she said. “The next thing we look at are the assistants. What type of people are surrounding the coach? Are they good role models to young men? Then we also look at the fans. Are they loyal? Do they give great support to the basketball team and the school and how inviting they are to him as a player. Those types of things.”

Ohio State offered Easter prior to his freshman season , and he has visited campus before. Cook-Easter confirmed that Ohio State will “definitely” be one of the schools her son will officially visit this fall before making a college decision.

Buckeyes head coach Jake Diebler was recruiting Jerry Easter II as Chris Holtmann’s associate head coach, and their relationship has not changed since he was promoted at the end of the 2023-24 regular season.

Ohio State Buckeyes: Join the Ohio State Sports Insider text group with Bill Rabinowitz, Joey Kaufman Adam Jardy

“I think the coaching change has made him take an even more serious look at Ohio State because he has a relationship with Jake,” she said. “I have a relationship with Jake. My husband has a relationship with Jake. It’s a good thing. I’m happy that Ohio State hired him for the job. We didn’t really know the old head coach that well, but we did keep in contact with Jake throughout the season.

“Jake is the same person that he was when he was an assistant. He just has more responsibilities now.”

Ohio State does not have any commitments for the 2025 class. The Buckeyes have a verbal commitment from Marcus Johnson, a five-star guard from Garfield Heights, Ohio, in the 2026 class.

  • Michigan State Spartans

Michigan State football has taken a steady approach to the recruiting trail this offseason, but it has recently started to increase its efforts. Coach Jonathan Smith and the Spartans have gradually begun to see some success on the recruiting trail and are looking to build upon their recent signings with a few more. After making a few more scholarship offers, Coach Smith and his coaching staff have scheduled an official visit with a talented player from Ohio.

The Spartans have secured an official visit from edge rusher Cal Thrush, who was offered by Michigan State last week. The Columbus, Ohio native has set June 14–16 dates for his official visit to East Lansing. He announced the visit on X, formerly known as Twitter.

According to 247Sports, Thrush is a three-star athlete in the 2025 recruiting class and is ranked as the 90th-best edge rusher and the 1,253rd-best overall prospect in the 2025 recruiting class.

The Spartans are one of over 10 nationwide football programs offering Thrush a scholarship. According to 247Sports, the other schools include Buffalo, Army, Navy, Air Force, Toledo, Cincinnati, Ball State, Kent State and Miami (OH).

Coach Smith has made it a point to recruit three-star athletes, as most of the recruits that have signed with the Spartans are three-star recruits. He and his coaching staff have used the transfer portal to fill many of their skill positions but continue to use the recruiting trail to build their offensive and defensive lines with serviceable three-star athletes.

As the Coach Smith era begins in East Lansing, players like Thrush will be pivotal to the turnaround the new Spartans coach hopes to bring to town. Securing a commitment from Thrush would be another building block for Coach Smith and Michigan State, as they remain active on the recruiting trail.

Coach Smith has prioritized players like Thrust on the recruiting trail, seemingly basing the success or failure of his early recruiting classes on his ability to secure commitments from mainly three-star athletes. As the Spartans continue to rebuild, they must take full advantage of official visits by players like Thrust, as the early success of Coach Smith’s tenure in East Lansing depends on it.
