v upset about the sound. could barely recognize what song they were playing.

first band had a clear sound but wasn't the one i was coming for

night beats suffered from the venue's lack of time or skills of the soundguy or whatsoever and couldn't offer them the sound they deserved.

really annoying

This band is just an amazing trio. I still can believe that such amount of energy can come out from just 3 musicians.

I love their dark and groovy riffs.

Great music, and amazing performance.

the night beats tour

Night Beats is the R&B Inspired Western Psychedelic Rock project from multi-instrumentalist Danny Lee Blackwell. Originally from Texas, Danny has been recording as Night Beats since 2009. Night Beats operates as a semi-solo project for Danny, as he writes and records mostly everything by himself. Night Beats latest album, Rajan , released this summer, and was featured on rotation here at WLUW. The album expertly blends eastern influence with country western motifs for a beautifully unique experience. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Danny before his performance at Sleeping Village here in Chicago last week, here’s what we talked about.

After our chat, Danny was kind enough to sign a copy of his Live In Valentine record for me. He even went backstage to get a sharpie since I forgot mine. I sat for a while in Sleeping Village enjoying the atmosphere and a couple signature drinks they had on tap. The relaxing jazz music playing over the speakers was a perfect compliment to the wood grain aesthetic and warm lighting. Over time, the bar filled out with people eagerly awaiting the show.

Once doors to the venue opened, people began to congregate from the front bar area and into the back where the performance was to be held. When the support act, Moonwalks, went on stage, the doors closed again and people were ready to rock. The three piece DIY psych outfit from Detroit had just played their hometown the night prior, and the energy was still palpable. Drummer Kerrigan Pearce, guitarist Jake Dean, and bassist Kate Gutwald rocked out through their set,

Before Night Beats came out, I made sure to move right up to the front of the stage. Before long, the venue was filled as fans packed in all around me. As I discussed with Danny in our interview, Night Beats is performing their new album Rajan from start to finish for each of their shows. This likely surprised most people, who are probably used to a different structure of setlist. Throughout the show, though, I understood further why Danny said that he thinks more bands should do this. The songs all flowed so perfectly into one another just like they did on the album, and with the instrumental limitations, the band is forced to find unique pockets for improvisation and experimentation within the songs.

the night beats tour

Danny and I spoke about how he learned to use a baglama for the first song on the record, Hot Ghee , but he didn’t bring the instrument on tour with him, so instead, guitar pedals were used to distort Danny’s guitar to bring a similar sound. The song took on a whole new life in a live setting, with explosive guitar solos from Danny unlike what I ever could have expected. The second song, Nightmare , was a total highlight for me. It’s one of my favorite songs on the record, and I loved the twists and turns that the band took with it.

Joined on stage by bassist Kyrone Oak and drummer Christopher Michael Scott, Danny seemed like he was born to perform. His band members’ relaxing demeanor meant that Danny commanded the attention of everyone in the room. His mind bending solos and expressive body language were infectious, and before long the groove had spread like wildfire throughout the audience.

The set closer was the last song on Rajan, Morocco Blues , and was another highlight for me. The song is a lot more uptempo than the previous song, 9 to 5 , which made for a nice change of pace. Danny’s reverberated guitar solos took the song to a whole different stratosphere. After the song ended, the crowd clapped and cheered, as the band members left the stage. Most of us remained locked in place, in awe of what we had just witnessed, and before we could move, the band came back out on stage for an encore. This totally surprised me, as I spoke with Danny about the setlist before the show and he didn’t mention an encore. The band proceeded to rock the house with a couple fan favorites, like Right / Wrong and That’s All You Got .

the night beats tour

To my eye, Night Beats is only getting better with time. Through 14 years in the music industry, Danny and his collaborators are becoming a force to be reckoned with. Night Beats is continuing their US tour through early October, and you can check out their latest record, Rajan, wherever you listen to music. I’d also suggest taking a look at their live session with Levitation.

Live music review: Night Beats and Daiistar gave Austin a modern psychedelic rock treat Saturday

When a band in Austin gets to make a record after playing their material for local audiences for months, sometimes years on end, it’s worthy of multiple rounds of applause. For Austin shoegaze/noise-pop act Daiistar, it’s been a long time coming. To celebrate the release of Daiistar’s new album Good Time , the rising Austin act enlisted the help of Seattle-born, now Texas-based band Night Beats, who are on a new album cycle of their own. The venue for their Austin stop on the circuit was East Side staple Hotel Vegas , a mecca for psychedelic rock and all of its adjacent genres. An open-air patio venue, Hotel Vegas is known for both chaotic and introspective shows, an ideal setting to discover what lies beneath the surface when exploring Austin’s vibrant music scene.

As it drew closer to 9 p.m., the Austin venue started filling up, with fans crowding the stage in anticipation of the Austin shoegaze outfit’s first Austin appearance since the April edition of Austin Psych Fest . When Daiistar took the stage, the group wasted no time to give the audience a good time. “Star Starter,” off the new record, kicked off the night with an upbeat tune that made the audience dive straight into the groove. The onstage lineup also featured Lindsay Mackin of Austin band, Annabelle Chairlegs handling auxiliary percussion duties. Mackin also collaborated with Daiistar for 2022’s edition of Levitation Festival for their opening set that featured local legends The Black Angels and Los Angeles rockers Frankie and the Witch Fingers .

Daiistar at Hotel Vegas

For the entirety of Daiistar’s set, the banter was little, if any—just the Austin shoegazers ripping through song after song with mind-boggling urgency. The crisp baselines from Misti Hamrick and the fuzzy strummed guitars from frontman Alex Capistran shined across every track in the set. The band was extra loud on Saturday night. They needed a noisy presentation to showcase their upstanding musical efforts that had been leading up to Saturday’s record release.

Daiistar Misti Hamrick

Around 10 p.m., the Night Beats trio took the stage. Since appearing at this year’s edition of Austin Psych Fest and front man Danny Rajan Billingsley’s appearance with UFO Club, co-founded with Austin psych rockers,  The Black Angels’ Christian Bland, the front man has been no stranger to Austin audiences in 2023. Night Beats’ set revolved around the psych act’s new record, Rajan , released earlier this year. For this new release, Billingsley has assembled a talented rhythm section to accompany him on this tour, a daunting task to account for all the out-of-this-world psychedelic sounds Night Beats has become known for. Night Beats didn’t wasting any time during their set—unleashing song after song with little BS to be found much like the opening act. An early set highlight came with psychedelic blues number “Blue,” complete with instrumentation that fizzled out into a psych-rock-sprinkled, jazz abyss.

Night Beats Danny

Night Beats didn’t stop there. The band kept marching on through their new album with determination, slicing through cuts like “Thank You” and “Cautionary Tale,” the former had a more chaotic Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-esque attack with searing guitar leads that sounded straight from the garage scene from which Night Beats was born. When Night Beats was finished tearing through the new record, the trio returned for a triple-barrelled encore of band classics. “Right/Wrong,” “That’s All You Got,” and “Puppet on a String” acted as the epic finale of the evening, continuing a pattern of Night Beats ripping through their music with unbridled indie-rock enthusiasm.

Fans were hoping for more from the back catalog, but the statement Night Beats made was a testament to where they are currently. Since Billingsey’s recent relocation to Texas, Austin appearances might become more frequent. The neo-psych heads are here for it, reverb-ready and all. Night Beats isn’t billed for this year’s Levitation music festival, but there are all the possibilities up in the air for Austin Psych Fest next Spring. Either way, we can’t wait for more from Danny Rajan Billingsley and Company. There are always good tunes to be had when the prolific musicians plug in to play.

Night Beats continue their U.S. tour through October before wrapping it up in San Francisco.

Xander Schauffele wins first major at PGA Championship in a thriller at Valhalla

Xander Schauffele celebrates after winning the PGA Championship golf tournament at the...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Every step Xander Schauffele took Sunday toward becoming a major champion brought small reminders that it was never going to be easy.

It wasn’t just Bryson DeChambeau pushing in the PGA Championship until he finally caught Schauffele with a birdie on the last hole at Valhalla.

It was the mud on Schauffele’s golf ball after a good drive on the 16th. It was the tee shot on the 17th that kicked back into a bunker instead of forward into the fairway. Needing birdie on the par-5 18th for the win, he hit what he thought was a good drive until Schauffele walked up and saw it had rolled close enough to a bunker that he couldn’t get a clean shot at the green.

“I just kept telling myself, ‘Man, someone out there is making me earn this right now,’” Schauffele said. “I get up there and just kind of chuckled. I was like, ‘If you want to be a major champion, this is the kind of stuff you have to deal with.’”

There was one other message he preached along the back nine.

“I told myself this is my opportunity — capture it,” Schauffele said.

A gutsy shot from the fairway — standing in the bunker with the ball above his feet, he worried about a shank — came up some 35 yards short with a perfect angle, and his pitch up the slope to 6 feet gave him the moment he always wanted.

And then the 30-year-old Californian, a hard-luck runner-up to Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy the last two months, delivered some magic of his own.

He swirled in a 6-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win a thriller at Valhalla. The putt denied DeChambeau — and LIV Golf — a chance at another major title and put Schauffele in the record book with the lowest 72-hole score in major championship history.

“I just kept telling myself, ‘I need to earn this — earn this and be in the moment.’ And I was able to do that,” Schauffele said. “I don’t really remember it lipping in. I just heard everyone roaring and I just looked up to the sky in relief.”

And with that, the Olympic gold medalist got something even more valuable in silver — that enormous Wanamaker Trophy after a wild week at Valhalla.

He closed with a 6-under 65 to beat DeChambeau, who was entertaining to the very end by turning a huge break into an unlikely birdie on the 16th hole and a 10-foot birdie on the par-5 18th for a 64.

“Shot 20-under par in a major championship,” DeChambeau said. “Definitely disappointing, but one that gives me a lot of momentum for the rest of the majors.”

Schauffele became the first player since Phil Mickelson in 2005 at Baltusrol to win the PGA Championship with a birdie on the last hole to win by one.

Even the last shot had drama. Schauffele crouched to study the putt and couldn’t figure out which way it was going to break. He played it straight, with just enough speed that when it caught the edge of the cup gravity was starting to take over.

Schauffele, who exudes California chill, raised both arms above his head with the biggest smile before a hard hug with Austin Kaiser, his caddie and former teammate at San Diego State.

DeChambeau was on the range, staying loose for a potential playoff, watching Schauffele from a large video board. He saw the winning putt fall, and walked all the way back to the 18th to join in with so many other players wanting to congratulate the 30-year-old.

Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship last year and remains the only LIV Golf player to win a major. DeChambeau was close to matching him.

“I gave it my all. I put as much effort as I possibly could into it and I knew that my B game would be enough,” DeChambeau said. “It’s just clearly somebody played incredibly well. Xander’s well deserving of a major championship.”

Viktor Hovland, the FedEx Cup champion who wasn’t sure he even belonged at Valhalla while trying to work his way out of a slump, also had a 10-foot putt to tie DeChambeau. He missed the birdie, then missed a meaningless par putt and shot 66 to finish third.

Schauffele, who began this championship with a 62 to tie the major championship record, finished at 21-under 263 with that winning birdie. That beats by one shot the major record previously shared by Koepka in the 2018 PGA Championship at Bellerive and Henrik Stenson in the 2016 British Open at Royal Troon.

And so ended another memorable week at Valhalla.

Scheffler, who arrived five days after the birth of his first child, was arrested and briefly jailed on Friday morning for not following directions of police investigating a fatal car crash involving a pedestrian an hour earlier.

He got out of jail and to the course in time to play the second round and shot 66. But it caught up with him on the weekend. Scheffler fell out of contention with a 73 on Saturday — his first round over par since last August. He closed with a 65 to tie for eighth.

Two players — Schauffele on Thursday and Shane Lowry on Saturday — tied the major record with a 62. Scoring records seemed to fall just about every day on a rain-softened course.

All that, and it came down to one putt that Schauffele will never forget.

But then, he was great from the start when he holed a 30-foot birdie putt at No. 1 to break out of a tie with Collin Morikawa. Schauffele went out in 31 and figured he had a comfortable lead, only to see a board that showed DeChambeau and Hovland in close pursuit.

And then Schauffele made a soft bogey on the par-5 10th, the easiest hold at Valhalla, and he suddenly was tied. It was easy to wonder what would go wrong next, if he would fall victim to another great round like Scheffler’s 64 at The Players Championship or McIlroy’s 65 last week at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Kaiser recalls Schauffele telling him, “We’ve got to go get it.”

He hit 7-iron to 8 feet for birdie on the 11th, another 7-iron to 6 feet for birdie on the 12th and the lead was restored. He held on with pars from mud balls, and with a clutch save on the 17th, setting up a moment that was all his.

In so many ways, this time was overdue. He had gone nearly two years since last winning at the Scottish Open. Schauffele had eight consecutive finishes in the top 20 at majors coming into Valhalla. He already had a pair of runner-up finishes and six top 5s.

The victory was his eighth on the PGA Tour — that doesn’t include his Olympic gold from the Tokyo Games in 2021. This one moves him to a career-best No. 2 in the world, still a long way from Scheffler but assuring Schauffele of qualifying for the U.S. team in the Olympics.

Scottie Scheffler caps a ‘hectic’ weekend by rallying to a strong finish at the PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler watches his tee shot on the fifth hole during the final round of the PGA...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The sentence seemed unthinkable at the beginning of the PGA Championship. Or any other time for that matter.

And yet there Scottie Scheffler was late Sunday afternoon, talking matter-of-factly about a week in which his burgeoning celebrity crossed over into notoriety in a way the world’s top-ranked golfer never imagined.

Asked if a so-so third-round Saturday that cost him a legitimate shot at a third career major title was the ripple effect of  all the chaos  that came a day earlier, Scheffler offered a response that seemed absurd — except for the part where it also happened to be true.

“I got arrested Friday morning and I showed up here and played a good round of golf, as well,” he explained.

Scheffler played another one Sunday, a 6-under 65 that vaulted him to 13 under and a tie for eighth  behind winner Xander Schauffele  and had all the trappings of a vintage Scheffler performance: a couple of laser-guided approaches, a handful of birdie putts and the relentlessness that has become his trademark.

Here’s what the weekend also featured: members of the gallery wearing hastily made T-shirts with Scheffler’s mug shot on the front and yelling “Free Scottie!” over and over (and over).

Oh, and questions afterward about his schedule, including whether he planned to stick around for his scheduled Tuesday morning arraignment on multiple charges stemming  from an incident outside Valhalla Golf Club  in the predawn hours before Friday’s second round or head home to his wife Meredith and  newborn son Bennett  back home in Dallas.

“I think it’s all up in the air,” Scheffler said. “I’m not really sure what the next days have in store. I think I’m able to get home ... but we’ll see when I leave here. I haven’t really had much chance to assess the situation off the course.”

Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell said Sunday his office had made no decisions on Scheffler’s case and is continuing to gather information.

Scheffler’s weeklong stay in Kentucky may have made the affable 27-year-old Texan more well-known than if he had finished the tournament by raising the Wanamaker Trophy in triumph.

Rather than become a PGA champion this weekend, Scheffler  became a meme .

And while he thanked nearly everyone who came across his path outside Kentucky’s largest city for their support, the guys he plays with every week couldn’t help but have his back and have a little fun about the bizarreness of it all at the same time.

“Frustrating week in KY. Lost to a guy who was literally in jail Friday morning,” fellow PGA Tour pro Max Homa  posted on Instagram  after finishing five shots behind Scheffler. “Tough look for me.”

Homa was kidding, of course. Yet the attention has put Scheffler in the uncomfortable position of trying to balance very disparate things at the same time.

Yes, he really was placed in handcuffs and taken to jail for allegedly disobeying the orders of a police officer tending to the scene of an accident where a vendor working the tournament was struck and killed by a bus. Yes, he really did get fingerprinted. Yes, he really did still make it back to the course in time to fire a 4-under 67 that put him in contention.

Still, all of this was taking place against the backdrop of a tragedy that wasn’t far from Scheffler’s mind. He extended his sympathies to John Mills’ family on Friday while adding his arrest was a “big misunderstanding” and that his situation would “get handled.”

It’s a lot to take in. Yet Scheffler was able — for two of the final three rounds anyway — to somehow tune out all of it.

“I’ve gotten better throughout my career of leaving the off-course distractions at home and kind of keeping a pretty quiet personal life,” he said. “And this week obviously that was not the case.”

No, it was not. Much of what was happening around Scheffler — in particular the way fans had fun with the image of a player whose idea of a good time is staying in and playing board games — was out of his control. He didn’t ask for it and tried to turn the “Free Scotties” into so much background noise.

Sunday, with caddie Ted Scott back on the bag a day after Scott went home to attend his daughter’s high school graduation, Scheffler put together a charge fueled by seven birdies against one bogey that looked — inside the ropes anyway — an awful lot like business as usual.

Except, it wasn’t. Scheffler admitted he nearly fell asleep while signing his scorecard and his thoughts immediately began racing toward the opportunity to get out of Kentucky and get back to Texas, family and fatherhood.

He is scheduled to play at Colonial in Fort Worth next week. He intends on keeping that commitment, but only after having a chance to reunite with Meredith and Bennett and put a little distance between himself and three “hectic” days he never saw coming.

“I’m just kind of just wondering what time bedtime is,” Scheffler said. “I’m trying to figure out how quickly I can get home from here and, yeah, that’s pretty much it.”

Stockholm secret songs: Taylor Swift to perform three acoustic sets for Eras Tour

STOCKHOLM — Taylor Swift wrapped up her titanic Eras Tour in the capital of Sweden, bringing her acoustic set to "Swiftholm."

On her final night in Friends Arena, Swift performed a “Max Martin Medley” of songs the Swedish producer and songwriter has worked on with the Eras Tour singer. Starting with “Message In A Bottle” from “Red (Taylor’s Version),” Swift then went into “How You Get The Girl” and “New Romantics” from “1989 (Taylor’s Version).”

”Max is here tonight,” the singer told the record-breaking and sold out show before performing the five plus minute piece on her guitar. She then played “How Did It End?” from “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Celebrating ‘1989’ on night two

For her 89th Eras Tour show, Swift performed “Guilty as Sin” on the guitar from her 11th era album.

”This is one of my favorites,” Swift said to the stadium of 60,000 fans.

She then played a mash-up of songs from “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” on the piano to celebrate the 89th show of the Eras Tour: “Say Don’t Go,” “Welcome to New York” and “Clean.”

‘One of favorite songs on Tortured Poets’

On night one, Swift mashed-up "I Think He Knows" from "Lover" and "Gorgeous" from "Reputation" on the guitar.

"This one I've never even remotely performed live before," she said at the piano before playing "Peter" from her 11th era. "And it's one of my favorite songs on 'Tortured Poets.' I swore I would only play this one for a crowd that I was absolutely in love with."

Nicola Roberts thanks Girls Aloud fans in Ireland for ‘most incredible opening night’

By Naomi Clarke and Sarah Ping, PA reporters

Nicola Roberts has thanked Girls Aloud fans for the “most incredible opening night” after they kicked off their reunion tour in Dublin.

The girl group – which consists of Nadine Coyle, Cheryl, Kimberley Walsh and Roberts – have dedicated the tour to their late bandmate Sarah Harding, who was diagnosed with cancer and died in September 2021 aged 39.

The Love Machine hitmakers performed again at the 3Arena in Dublin on Saturday before they travel across the UK with shows in cities including Belfast, Manchester, Cardiff, Glasgow and London.

A post shared by Nicola Roberts (@lilcola)

Ahead of their second show on Saturday, Roberts posted a series of photos of the foursome performing on the opening night in elaborate white costumes with sequins and ruffles.

Each member donned their own take on the outfit, with Cheryl and Coyle opting for a bodysuit style while Walsh wore a jumpsuit version and Roberts a dress variation with a tulle skirt.

In a couple of the images the girl group can be seen standing on individual raised podiums.

Alongside the post, Roberts wrote: “Wow! Thank you for the most incredible opening night!

“Dublin, you were everything and knowing some of you have flown in from around the world to be with us at our first show is so special.

“In glam getting ready to go again .. Love these pics of our first costume.”

The group opened Friday’s show 30 minutes later than scheduled due to “Dublin motorway closures”, with their hit Untouchable.

During the concert, the foursome performed a duet with Harding, whose vocals to the song I’ll Stand By You played as the group sang along live on-stage, in videos circulating on social media.

They later performed one of their biggest bits, The Promise, as the four women stopped and turned their backs to the audience to watch a screen play footage of Harding singing the song on her own.

Longtime Girls Aloud fan Anna-Laura MJ Hitch (30) told the PA news agency that she could tell the show was “emotional” for the girl group and the crowd following Harding’s death.

“It was beautiful, but in a very tough way. I think it reality hit everybody a bit”, she said.

“She is so missed and loved. The tour programme explains how much money they’ve fundraised towards cancer research and this tour is only helping more. She’d be very proud.”

The Pride of Britain Awards 2013 – London

Ms Hitch, who flew from Whitby in North Yorkshire to be at the first show having previously seen the group around 20 times, said the concert was “very nostalgic” for her as she used to attend the opening night of their tours when growing up.

She added: “The last time I saw them I was pregnant, and now I have a 10-year-old daughter who I’m taking to another of their tour dates in a couple of weeks.

“It all feels very full circle and they’ve been a massive part of my life.”

The singers won Popstars: The Rivals in 2002 and formed Girls Aloud, going on to achieve four UK number one singles and a Brit award for track The Promise.

They reunited with new music for their 10th anniversary in 2012, while a second reunion was planned for their 20th anniversary when Harding was diagnosed with cancer.

After their two shows in Dublin’s 3Arena, Girls Aloud will play two concerts at the SSE Arena in Belfast on Monday and Tuesday, before heading to the Manchester AO Arena from Thursday to Saturday.

In November, the group had to add six extra dates to their UK and Ireland 2024 arena tour due to “unprecedented demand” following ticket pre-sales.
