Full line-up announced for The Illusionists

Seven of the world's best magic performers arrive in the West End this summer.

Currently the biggest selling magic show across the globe, The Illusionists – Direct From Broadway will take to London’s West End from Saturday 6 July until Sunday 1 September 2019.

Organisers have now confirmed the seven magicians that will take to the Shaftesbury Theatre. The Showman James More, The Unforgettable Enzo, The Manipulator Yu Ho-Jin, The Futurist Adam Trent, The Mentalist Chris Cox, The Trickster Paul Dabek and The Daredevil Jonathan Goodwin are all set to dazzle audiences come the summer.

More rose to fame after a run on Britain’s Got Talent in 2013, with over 80 million views across YouTube. As part of The Illusionists, be became the first British magician to perform on New York’s iconic Broadway.

More will be joined by Enzo, who held his first magic show at just 11 years old and premiered his own Beyond Illusions at the famous Casino de Paris at the age of 26.

Yu Ho-Jin won first prize in Stage Magic and Grand Prix at DISM World Championship of Magic in 2012, and has since been referred to as “the future of magic”.

The Futurist, Adam Trent has appeared on the likes of The Ellen DeGeneres Show , The Today Show and more, and is one of the first magicians to perform in the record-breaking Broadway runs of The Illusionists.

Chris Cox is no stranger to the West End, having performed his Impossible show on its stages. Star of the BBC’s Killer Magic , Cox blends showmanship and magic with ease.

Paul Dabek, known as The Trickster, has performed across six continents, including his own Las Vegas show. His fast paced and dynamic show has seen him honoured with the Young Magician of the Year award and the British Shield.

Daredevil and Escape Artist Jonathan Goodwin completes the line-up, renowned as one of the most skilled stunt performers in the world. Star of his own BBC documentary, Goodwin has been buried alive, hung from a helicopter, attacked by sharks and more.

All seven performers are now set to take to London’s Shaftesbury Theatre four years since The Illusionists last performed in the West End, returning having broken their fourth box office record on Broadway. The production marks the first time the seven performers, all heavyweights in their own right, appear on stage together.

The show promises thrilling and sophisticated magic like never seen before.

Chris Cox was delighted to star in The Illusionists – Magic of the Holidays on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre during the 2019 Holiday Season. This made Chris the only mind-reader in history to have played Broadway, London’s West End and Sydney Opera House.

He is now starring in The Illusionists – Magic of the Holidays  as as part of its 2022 US Tour bringing holiday magic to the States with his unique blend of hilarious mind reading. At one point he had a young boy on stage and put him behind a curtain, gave him general instructions of what to do, and magically duplicated all that he did without being able to see him. The award-winning The Mentalist (Chris Cox) is also a dynamic and charming high-energy performer as he reads the minds of audience members, astonishingly revealing obscure, specific details of their everyday lives and histories.  The Blurb

He’s a thin, bespectacled gent, and other than a Tintin-esque tuft of hair and a penchant for tartan trousers, he doesn’t seem to have any of the gimmicks (elaborate costumes, flames, dancing girls) that his colleagues include in their acts. But Cox is a whirlwind of energy and, most importantly, lightning-quick improvised humour that makes him a hoot to watch even before he does any of what he’s a whiz at – apparently reading people’s minds. Cox appears in both halves of the show, with his first set a one-on-one encounter with a volunteer where, impressively enough, he is able to deduce details about his bewildered guest that should be impossible for him to know. His achievements after the interval are considerably more gobsmacking though, when he first reveals facets of random audience members based on touching brief questionnaires they’ve filled in, sealed in thick envelopes and placed in a container onstage. The brow-furrowing goes a step further when someone Cox is addressing touches someone next to them, and he instantly names that person and states facts about them that he cannot possible have been informed about in any conventional sense. The Mentalist held the real ace on the night. Bearing a physical resemblance to Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, he left the audience gasping in astonishment as he struck up a connection with members of the audience and then proceeded to probe through their thoughts. Then we met quirky Chris Cox, a mind reader who blends magic, psychology and humour to produce an act that is both eccentric and yes, mind blowing. Tall and skinny, with scuffed tackies and a Tintin quiff, he’s able to warm up an audience very quickly. Until he starts telling people when their birthdays are, and what sport they play, and who their favourite band is. Then it all starts to feel a little hair-raisingly chilly. But he’s a class act, no doubt – I spoke to the three people who he had singled out in the audience, and they all swore they were not part of the show, had never met Chris Cox, and that everything he said about them was true. Chris Cox took my mental image / concept / prior experience of mind readers and flipped all categories! Literally bounding around stage with exuberance (kind of like Tigger from Winnie the Pooh – but with braces, glasses and a neat outfit), Chris charmed the audience quickly with his endearing nature. Whereas ‘typical’ mind readers can come across as a bit scary / creepy with often serious routines, Chris ensured that his routines were the opposite – lighthearted, charming and not at all scary. The level of details he went to when ‘picking the brains’ of his audience members were incredible – much of the audience members were in disbelief. HYUNJOON KIM

Hyunjoon Kim was born in 1991 in Korea. He started showing interest in magic at age 12. As he was winning awards in competitions at the early age 14, he surfaced as an extremely talented young magician to the Korean magic industry. He won the Grand Prix at the Italian International Magic Competition at the young age of 16. After that, he won numerous magic contests in Hong Kong, Russia, England, etc. and has won seven awards including Champion at the American Magic Championship. His expertise is in manipulation using pure hand technique. It requires extreme discipline and a highly skilled technique that he has transformed into an art form as kin as a sharp knife. Anyone who sees his performance is amazed, as his skill sets are a form of art proven through his winning the top prize at the world magic championship FISM in 2012. The young enchanting Spanish magician, Pablo, has made himself known internationally as a prodigy. Pablo held the record 3 times for the youngest illusionist winner in Spain. The recognition of his extraordinary skills granted him the title "Golden Magician" in Paris, France "Magician D'Or" and the winning title of "Heir of Illusion" in the house of Magic. The Illusionists 2022 Review : Magic from Marina Bay Sands

The last 2 years were like a dream.

The world stood still. Many things that were taken for granted disappeared. This includes watching live shows or musicals at Sands Theatre. For a while, we wondered if we could say Abracadabra and turn the clock back to 2019. 

As it turns out, The Illusionists - Direct from Broaddway does its magic and brings us back to the good old days. The Illusionists is back in Singapore after a tour here in 2016. In case you miss the first show, the Illusionists is a magic show packed with jaw-dropping stunts, mind-boggling magic tricks, seemingly impossible mind-reading and lightning speed sleight of hand. This time around there is a mix of old and new faces. If you happen to find some acts familiar, you would have probably caught them on shows such as  American Got Talent .

Instead of one headliner, you have a group of established magicians, illusionists and mentalists that come together to bring you a wonderful display of magic that would often leave you awestruck and bewildered. This group is touted as Magic's Cirque Du Soleil and the quality of the performance reminded us of Vegas-style entertainment we had seen during  our last trip o US .

There are a total of 7 masterful performers who perform a few acts in between them. Without giving much away, here is what you can expect from the show.

The Master Magician

Luis De Matos is back as the Master Magician. His opening act of making fishes appear and disappear will is nothing short of amazing. His mind-reading tricks baffle the mind, especially when he made the audience do their own magic trick ( this is probably one of the best audience participation we have encountered)

It left us scratching our heads as to how it is done right before our eyes 

The Escapologist

Andrew Basso is recognised as the natural successor of Harry Houdini. Ranked as one of the top magicians of the 21st Century, he is well known as an Escape Artist and the Rock Star of Magic. Not only was his performance nail-biting, but his wits and charms also shine through during one of the more light-hearted performances of the show

The Unforgettable

Enzo Weyne as The Unforgettable is full of creativity and humour in his performances. There are moments when he would announce that he would share the magic with the audience, but instead, he added another layer of magic to his reveal. This makes him fun. Expect the unexpected for his act

The Warrior

We caught Aaron Crow nerve wreaking stunts on  American Got Talent . his performances are considered to be one of the most dangerous and crazy acts

Getting volunteers from the audience, he attempts to slice pineapple with his samurai sword blindfolded and shoots an apple above a volunteer with a bow and arrow while being turned around and around. If you are in the audience, pray that you would not get selected as it will take nerves of steel to stand before the Warrior. The best part is that he does not utter a single word on stage but his presence is insanely electrifying.

The Manipulator

The Manipulator, Kim Hyun Joon, is the youngest magician in the group with the fastest hands. Cards seemingly appear out of nowhere. Stay for the bonus act after the finale for a tribute to Singapore!

The Deceptionist

The Deceptionist, James More will leave your jaw wide open. From the moment we saw him pierced through a pike right in front of our eyes and came out without a scratch, we could not believe what we see!

James More has also appeared on America's Got Talent.

The Designers

Another American Got Talent Alumni, Sos and Victoria dazzle with the Quick Change performance that had everyone guessing how did they do it. This award-winning couple is a Four Times World Champions of Quick Change illusion and it was our pleasure to have caught them live.

The Illusionist - Direct from Broadway is a great way to enjoy a June Holiday treat. The performance is suitable for both young and old. There is only a limited run from 3 to 17 June. Catch it before it disappears!
