Snorkel with Turtles on Oahu

Snorkel with Turtles is the snorkeling company associated with the dive shop Island Divers Hawaii. We have 20 years of experience taking scuba divers to see turtles underwater, and there is a site close to shore where we see them every day.

As we received more and more requests for just viewing the turtles in their natural environment, in May of 2021 we decided to dedicate our largest, most stable vessel to visiting that site — just to snorkel with turtles!

Very knowledgeable and courteous. They helped me with things I had forgotten from my training course years ago. I'm so glad I enrolled in the refresher class.

Amazing experience! Calm and love able staff! They helped my daughter during a panic attack and she and I both finished our certification today! Highly recommend this dive shop!

All the staff was very professional. Captain Matt, Kevin, Paul, and Jeremy kept us all safe and well informed of the dives. I recommend divers of all levels go to these guys!

Guided Snorkeling with Sea Turtles | Oahu

Guided sea turtle snorkel, oahu, wildlife tours with integrity.

Guided snorkeling with sea turtles oahu boat tour

Our marine biologist crew sails you out for sensitive sea turtle connections on the “wild side” of Oahu.

Summer months with calm waters and deserted beaches are the best time to the swim the turtle reef on Oahu’s west coast. However as long as conditions allow (big wave season is Nov. – Feb. in Hawaii), we can include snorkeling with turtles in every charter. Our daily agenda is typically intermixed with guided  reef snorkeling (turtles and reef fish), wild dolphin watching and swim encounters, and whale watching. All with fun, expert narration. You’ll see what others miss!

Flash – Makaha  Turtle “Cleaning Station” (watch video!)

“When you look something wild in the eye, and it looks back at you, you see it for the first time.”

Discover coral reefs frequented by green sea turtles and tropical fish. Find turtles resting or grazing under ledges, stretching out at turtle “cleaning stations”, or basking at the water’s surface. Be especially sensitive to a resting turtle, and when snorkeling with sea turtles please stay a good 10 feet away always.

Book your guided turtle snorkeling boat tour

With proper respect, guided snorkeling with sea turtles on Oahu can give lifetime memories.

There are a couple of subtle signs to watch for when near a sea turtle that signal you may be too close for their comfort. “Yawning”, open mouth movements or head bobbing are clues. A more deeply irritated turtle will “flipper swipe” swiping a flipper over the forehead area. This is turtle-speak equal to flipping you off! Don’t embarrass yourself (or be deemed insensitive) by being flipped off by a turtle, back off if you see that flipper creep up. Less subtle signs of disturbance can include sudden awakening from a sleep-like state on the sea floor, an increase in swimming speed or diving towards deeper water. Turtles can swim in amazingly fast bursts! Green sea turtles are known for their strong, paddle-like limbs, which they use to swim through the water. When frightened, they can sprint up to 22mph. While they could give that fabled hare a run for it’s money, a black marlin clocks out at 82 mph!

“There are sea turtles everywhere, foraging right below our feet, peaceful but fearless. Nothing about them appears passive, so thick skinned and strong. I want to be like that, wise, peaceful and perfectly equipped to deal with anything.”

– Michael J. Fox

snorkeling with turtles oahu hawaii

Snorkeling may be weather dependent, especially during winter months. While animals may still be viewed from the surface, it is not always in our best interest to get in the water…

“”Snorkeling alongside these majestic, graceful, creatures is a humbling reminder of the fragility of the planet, and the devastating impact of humans. Making eye contact with a turtle, watching it elegantly propel itself to the surface to catch its breath before descending again to the sandy seabed, and then swim alongside a glistening web of plastic floating aimlessly underwater is a powerful prompt that conservation work – no matter how small – is more important than ever.”

~ Lucy Sherriff, Discovery Channe l “

It seems that everyone loves sea turtles.  They are a source of awe and inspiration ; lumbering up on a beach to bask, flying gracefully through a reef, or watching hatchlings charge to the sea are truly magical and unforgettable experiences. Would our blue planet be complete without sea turtles?

Sea turtles have played vital roles in maintaining the health of the world’s oceans for more than 100 million years. These roles range from maintaining productive coral reef ecosystems to transporting essential nutrients from the oceans to beaches and coastal dunes.

The tour officially begins with your guide arriving to pick you up at your hotel or designated pick up location in Waikiki. From there you and your fellow guests will be taken to the famous Diamond Head Lookout which is perched on the eastern side of the Diamond Head Volcano. This lookout offers the perfect vantage point to gaze at the incredible Oahu coastline. After leaving the lookout, you will head to the Halona Blowhole, which is an ancient lava tube that opens into the ocean. When the water conditions are right, the waves crash against the sea cliffs which creates an immense amount of pressure inside the lava tube and forces water to shoot 30’ into the air.

Following the coastline along the sea cliffs of Waimanalo towards the North Shore will take you right past the Makapuu Point Lookout from which you can see Manana Island off in the distance. A quick detour will bring you to a tropical farm that specializes in macadamia nuts, coffee and Hawaiian chocolate among other local treats. After a tasting at the farm, your guide will continue along the coastline into the Kualoa Valley Mountain Range and then to Chinaman’s Hat, a famous rock formation seen in several blockbuster Hollywood films.

Lunch will be served at another well known local farm located at the base of the Ko’olau Mountain Range. On the menu are mouthwatering delicacies including but not limited to garlic shrimp, coconut shrimp, and Kalua pork. After lunch, it is finally time to head to Turtle Beach and jump in the water with one of Hawaii’s most beloved sea creatures. As a final treat, your guide will take you to the historic Dole Pineapple Plantation to get a tour of the facilities, pick up souvenirs and of course, enjoy a cold and creamy pineapple Dole Whip! Depending on traffic, return time to Waikiki is expected to be between 4:00pm - 4:30pm.

Here is a little more information on these gentle giants!

Hawaii’s green sea turtles are found in seas around the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Green sea turtles are known for their unique nesting practices. When the time comes for the female to lay her eggs, she will walk onshore, dig a hole, and lay her eggs in the sand.

Later, hundreds of hatchlings can emerge from these nests, though many of them are taken by predators before arriving at the waters’ edge. While many of the young turtles will not survive, some can live as long as 80-100 years and weigh up to 500 pounds.

Green sea turtles are at risk due to many reasons. In some areas, they are hunted, while in other areas, water pollution has caused their food sources to become toxic.

Please help save our turtles by using a reef safe sunscreen and also being sure to use reusable water bottles and help protect our precious resource!

Benjy Gilholm

Benjy Gilholm, co-founder and CEO of Hawaii Turtle Tours, moved to the North Shore of Oahu in 1990 at the age of 18 from Encinitas, California, to pursue his dream of surfing Pipeline and the challenging waves of Hawaii after his first visit at age 14 with team Quicksilver for the US champions at Sandy Beach. He has a long history of interesting employment positions since his arrival in Hawaii. Mr. Gilholm held positions with several major surf labels as team manager/marketing specialist, 5 years as a State lifeguard, 5 years at Turtle Bay Resort and most recently since 2008 as a highly accomplished realtor, selling 5 oceanfront properties and a 16-unit apartment building in Waikiki to add to his resume. In 2011, he decided it would be fun to build a tour company in order to share the beautiful island of Oahu with tourists and really show Aloha by offering intimate tours with small groups. He feels blessed to give back by offering free tours to the Make a Wish Foundation, helping Hawaii’s homeless by purchasing free bikes, food, and clothes for the less fortunate, and employing multiple local families.

Ernest Egan

Ernest Egan, Chief Operation Officer and co-founder of Hawaii Turtle Tours, was born in San Francisco, CA, in 1967 and moved to Pacifica, CA, in 1970. His back door neighbor was a Judo instructor, Fred Lee, from Ehukai Beach whose son Freddy Lee was an incredible surfer and surfboard maker. The Lee’s were like a second family, and at age 6 Ernest started Judo and by 10 became a top 3 state competitor, a state champion and top 5 in the nation for 6 years. At 11 Freddy Lee made Ernest his first surfboard. At a national competition held in Waikiki at age 14, Ernest stayed after with the Lee family and fell in Love with Hawaii and surfing warm water. At 16 Ernest became a Christian. At 18 Ernest left a swimming scholarship at USF to move to Kauai and surf “real” waves. Waiting tables nights at the Princeville Hotel gave a great background for high level hospitality and a chance to work alongside many amazing Hawaiian Legends in addition to surfing daily.

  • Chevron down Read More:

Those early days in Hawaii continued Ernest’s “school of hard knocks” surfing alongside Kauai’s world-class surfers and further learning about respect and aloha that started way back with the Lee’s. At 23 he was invited to the Triple Crown of surfing only to have a severe knee injury take him out. In 1994, Ernest went on a surf trip to Indonesia with friends. Although he almost died from malaria, the following year he started Good Sumateran Surf Charters, a liveaboard surf charter company taking surfers from all over the world to some of the best and most remote waves in the world on boats for 11-24 days from Sumatera to the Mentawai Islands. Ernest eventually grew to 3 boats and managed 2 others for local Indonesians. His passion for sharing these waves with all surfers was huge.

In 1998, he started a nonprofit “Saving the Reef, A Surfer’s Quest” and also was the first to help Surf Aid to distribute mosquito nets to the locals in the sparsely inhabited Mentawai Islands. He also lobbied hard for environmental protection for the locals and the Mentawai Islands. Years later approached by Benjy Gilholm to start a tour in Hawaii, Ernest was very happy to get involved and start a tour that taught about the local culture, aloha, wildlife, and an encounter while swimming with Hawaiian sea turtles.

We love being a positive part of the community and sharing our love and relationships in a way that teaches love and respect for all of Hawaii and Hawaiians. Getting people in the water with sea turtles is an amazing life experience that can change your heart and soul and fill it with Aloha. We also love providing jobs and giving back to the community through different nonprofits, foundations, and really anywhere we can share the aloha spirit to those in need.

When you visit Hawaii, one of the most popular things to do is to hit the water and head out snorkeling. While Oahu has some great snorkeling spots, not many are close to Waikiki. If you’re looking for a snorkeling experience that is close to Waikiki and memorable, you’ll probably enjoy a trip to Turtle Canyon!

I’ll be honest and say that I was really hesitant about heading to Turtle Canyon. I’d heard it was crowded and there wasn’t much to see. While it’s true this is a crowded spot, we were really happy with our tour! We saw plenty of turtles (which our kids were thrilled by) and it was an easy trip to Make from Waikiki.

Most Turtle Canyon snorkeling tours depart from Kewalo Basin Harbor which is just outside of Waikiki and make the short boat ride out to Turtle Canyon. This site is popular and crowded, but it does provide a great snorkeling experience as well as an opportunity to catch a glimpse of the beautiful Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle .

We have five great tours to choose from for a fun snorkeling trip.

If you’re looking for a less crowded snorkeling experience, head out to Ko Olina for one of our favorite trips . And if you haven’t booked a place to stay , these 7 Awesome Vacation Rentals in Waikiki should be in the running.

Want the cliff notes version of our favorite tours? Get it right here: – Hop on a small group, 6 person tour on a power raft – This 20 person power boat gives you a great experience at a great price – Jump on a 40 person boat for a fun tour! – Go in luxury on a 55′ catamaran – Kakay, snorkel, and surf on the combination trip And for your trip to Oahu, make sure you check out our free Oahu Guide . It’ll walk you through nearly everything you need to know to plan your trip.

Turtle Canyon Snorkeling FAQs

How do you snorkel at turtle canyon.

Snorkeling at Turtle Canyon is by boat only, so the best way to snorkel is from a boat tour. There are a number of tours that leave from Kewalo Harbor, which is a short drive from Waikiki. There are a number of different snorkeling tours to choose from, including catamaran tours, raft tours, and kayaking tours. We give our recommendations below!

Turtle Canyon snorkeling tour

What is Turtle Canyon?

Just off the coast of Waikiki is an area that is known for its turtle population that has been nicknamed Turtle Canyon.

The reef at Turtle Canyon is a natural turtle cleaning station, where sea turtles go to have fish come through and clean their shells. Fish will remove algae, barnacles, and even parasites, so this is important for the turtle’s health. Plus it’s also pretty cool to see. It’s no wonder it’s such a popular snorkeling spot.

Hawaii Green Sea Turtles are protected and it’s recommended that you stay at least 10 feet away from them both in water and on land .

Is Turtle Canyon snorkeling worth it?

If your goal is to see turtles in the water, snorkeling at Turtle Canyon is worth it. This is a great opportunity to see sea turtles and enjoy a boat ride. But a word of caution: this is a crowded spot. It’s the closest snorkeling tour stop near Waikiki and a lot of tours head out there daily. So it’s not a peaceful, serene experience, but it’s still fun.

We saw a lot of turtles — so many that we lost count. And our five year old son was thrilled recounting the stories of just how many turtles were swimming around.

Turtle Canyon Tour Tips

While snorkeling at Turtle Canyon is a pretty fun and easy experience, we have a few tips that will make your trip even better.

1. Get there early for parking

Kewalo Basin parking can be challenging, especially if there is an event going on. We learned our lesson the first time heading to a boat tour when we didn’t leave ourselves enough time to park and there was a surf competition underway at the beach (so parking was very difficult to come by). Leave yourself an extra 15 minutes more than you think you need to park and walk to the slip. And even easier, take an uber or a taxi to skip any parking stresses!

If you’re driving, make sure to check prices with Discount Hawaii Car Rental . We use them almost every time we rent a car and we’ve saved thousands of dollars with them. They offer great rates from the national carriers and there’s no pre-payment required. It’s honestly amazing.

2. Bring reef-safe sunscreen

Mineral-based reef safe sunscreen is the best choice for protecting Hawaii’s delicate reef system. Even better, grab some sun protective clothing and you’ll use less sunscreen and protect your skin more.

3. Choose the right tour operator

There are a lot of great tours to Turtle Canyon and it might feel difficult to choose. While the ones listed below are great, read through our notes to find the right tour for you. Differences like group size and boat type can make a big difference on your trip.

4. Go early!

The morning tours generally have the best visibility because the trade winds usually pick up later in the day. However, the sea turtles visit the reef often and are there all day long so not to worry if you book a later time you will still be able to see lots of tropical fish, sea turtles, and possibly even dolphins on the way out to sea.

Small group tour.

Hop aboard a power raft for a 1.5 hour tour to Turtle Canyon. With only 6 passengers, this is a great small group tour. The raft offers a powerful and agile ride, but it’s only appropriate for kids 5 and up.

They offer guaranteed turtle sightings and if you don’t see one, you get to go again for free. You’ll spend 45 minutes in the water and then return enjoying juice and water and sights of the Waikiki shoreline.

Power Boat 20 Person Tour

Take a two-hour trip with Charter Oahu on their 38’ power boat. The boat is partially shaded and comfortable! The boat has room for 27 passengers but they cap the tour at 20 passengers so it doesn’t feel too crowded.

And while Turtle Canyon is a crowded snorkeling spot, you’ll get a slightly quieter experience with Charter Oahu. They have a mooring location that is a bit on the outside of the canyon (a place they refer to as Turtle Rock) so you stay out of the crowds.

This is a small, family-run business, all-female crew, and aside from offering a great tour, they keep their tour prices very reasonable. Our family has a great time on their Turtle Canyon snorkel tour. We paid for the extra photo package which was available on board and we were thrilled that they captured our family memories so well.

This would be a great tour to do with a family. And if you’re coming to Oahu with kids, make sure you check out our favorite family friendly hotels .

Catamaran Tour

Hop aboard a 55’ catamaran with Moana Sailing for a trip out to Turtle Canyon. This two hour tour runs three times per day and can carry up to 48 passengers.

Enjoying this trip on a catamaran does mean your tour group is larger, but the boat ride is more comfortable and luxurious. Stretch out on the nets in front as you take a break from snorkeling and enjoy the views!

And if luxury is what you’re after, check out our pick for the best luxury hotels on Oahu .

Kayak and Snorkel Tour

Ditch the boat and have a different experience. Head out on a kayaking trip to Turtle Canyon .

Laniakea Beach-sea-turtles

Laniakea Beach - Sea Turtle Viewing

Known as " Turtle Beach ," Laniakea's shoreline is a popular spot on Oahu's North Shore for these majestic creatures to rest and feed. The best time to visit is during the summer months, as that's when the turtles come to shore to lay their eggs. However, you can still catch a glimpse year-round. Laniakea Beach not only provides a breathtaking experience for visitors, but it also serves as a protected habitat for the beloved sea turtles of Oahu.

Yokohama-bay-turtles

Yokohama Bay - Hawaiian Sea Turtles

Yokohama Bay provides visitors with an extraordinary experience that's off the beaten path. Hanauma Bay sea turtles

Sea turtles at Hanauma Bay

While it may not have as many sea turtles as some other spots on the island, Hanauma Bay still remains a popular choice for those looking to see the turtles up-close. Understanding Federal Protection Laws for Sea Turtles in Hawaii

Oahu is a paradise full of diverse marine life, including enchanting sea turtles. But remember, they're not just pretty faces - they're protected species under federal laws. As visitors and wildlife enthusiasts, we must respect their natural habitats.

Why Respecting Wildlife Regulations is Important

The Endangered Species Act (ESA) provides comprehensive protection for threatened and endangered plants and animals, including the Hawaiian green turtle or "Honu."

Hawaiian Sea Turtle Viewing Tips

To maintain a respectful distance from them while enjoying their presence:

  • Avoid touching or feeding the turtles : Feeding can disrupt their normal diet, while touching can cause stress and harm.
  • Maintain at least 10 feet distance : This helps prevent any accidental disturbances to these sensitive creatures.
  • No flash photography : Bright lights can startle or disorientate the turtles, especially when they're nesting on beaches at night.

Consequences of Violating Protection Laws

Violating these regulations carries severe penalties, including hefty fines of up to $10,500 according to NOAA Fisheries guidelines.

But beyond legal implications, it's about understanding our role in preserving nature's balance and respecting all forms of life sharing our planet. Let's strive toward responsible tourism, ensuring that future generations can experience Oahu's rich biodiversity intact. Let's practice ethical tourism and ensure we don't disrupt wildlife by viewing it from a respectful distance.

Hawaiian green sea turtles , or honu, hold a special place on the islands. They are  sacred animals  and  symbolize good luck and long life in Hawaiian culture.

These majestic creatures glide through the ocean with an average lifespan that can range from 30 to 80 years! Imagine that – decades of swimming through vast seas.

When you’re lucky enough to spot a turtle on Oahu, you might find it munching away at algae. This “limu” is their main food and grows all around the coral reefs.

The reefs serve as a buffet for these turtles, providing nourishing meals day after day.

But remember, while these sea turtles may be friendly-looking, they have VIP status under the law. Thanks to the  Endangered Species Act   in Hawaii, it’s totally  off-limits to touch them .

Showing respect means viewing these endangered species from a distance – and what a sight they are! Just by watching them swim or bask on sunny beaches, we get to share in part of their world without disturbing their peace.

Keep your hands to yourself but let your eyes feast on one of Hawaii’s most charming marine treasures – the honu.

When you’re gearing up to witness the majestic Honu in their element around Oahu’s shores, it’s crucial to soak up some important guidelines first.

Trust me, knowing the do’s and don’ts will not only enhance your turtle-spotting experience but also ensure these beloved creatures continue to thrive for generations to come.

Let’s dive into how we can admire them responsibly while keeping both our flippered friends and ourselves safe.

Sea turtles are super cool animals, but they  need space just like us. If you see them on Oahu’s beaches or in the water, stay back and watch quietly.

Getting too close, touching, or chasing these creatures can scare them and even make them sick.

Also, remember that there’s a  big fine for bothering sea turtles  because they’re  protected by law .

Give sea turtles at least 10 feet of room. This is important when you’re swimming or taking pictures. Use your zoom to get a good shot instead of walking up to them.

Let’s keep these amazing animals safe and happy so everybody can enjoy seeing them!

sea turtle nest on the beach - where to see turtles in oahu

So always watch them from a distance of at least 10 feet . This way, you help protect these incredible creatures.

Enjoying sea turtles on Oahu means knowing the do’s and don’ts. Follow signs and  guide ropes that mark off turtle resting areas at beaches like Laniakea.

Listening to volunteers and  respecting barriers  keeps both you and the turtles out of trouble.

This ensures everyone can keep having awesome turtle encounters for years to come!

Safety is key when watching sea turtles in Oahu. Keep these tips in mind for a safe and enjoyable experience.

  • Stay at least 10 feet away from the turtles . Getting too close can stress them out.
  • Never try to feed the sea creatures , including sea turtles. It’s not good for their health.
  • Always use reef-safe sunscreen  when you’re snorkeling or swimming. You’ll protect both your skin and the marine life, including the turtles in the world.
  • Avoid standing on coral reefs  or rocks where turtles might be resting.
  • Be sure to float and swim calmly if you see turtles swimming near the shore. Quick movements can scare them away.
  • Look out for signs and follow any guidelines posted at beaches to protect turtles and their habitat.
  • Keep loud noises to a minimum , as sound can disturb the peaceful environment of the sea turtles.
  • Take all your trash with you when you leave. Litter can harm the ocean and its wildlife.

sea turtle on a beach - where to see turtles in oahu

The best time to visit Oahu’s beaches is between  11am and 2pm for your best chance at seeing sea turtles.

During these hours, the sun is high, making it easier for you to spot turtles as they come closer to shore.

Turtles love the warm midday sun too! They often appear on beaches to  bask in the heat .

You might also catch sight of these amazing creatures at  Waikiki Beach  around sunrise or near noon. Early risers get rewarded with quieter shores and sometimes a  turtle greeting  as the day begins.

Keep your eyes peeled by the  water’s edge —this is where turtles like to hang out!

As many other people on this site have stated, we've found our long lost uncle Kevin! The tour regardless would have been great, but Kevin took it to a whole other level. Of the other tours I've taken in the last 10 days this one was the best. It never once got boring as some of the other tours have. There is a different type of stop like every 45 minutes so never stuck on the bus. We snorkeled, hiked, and kayaked and had some delicious food along the way. I highly recommend this tour!

sea turtle tour hawaii

Picked up on time and everything ran smoothly. Uncle Kevin is great. He is very knowledgeable about the island and its culture. There wasn't a single question no matter how random he couldn't answer. Overall great experience and will definitely be doing it again when we come back.

Photo of Chris T.

Had a lot of fun today! Did swimming at the waterfall at Waimea Falls, kayaking, loved the choices we had, Kevin was full of constant information on the history, towns, beaches, mountains, and everything else you can think of, sprinkled in with his unique sense of humor. The food truck choices were difficult to make, we choose Seven Brothers which did not disappoint with the Blu Burger.

Photo of Jessica C.

Uncle Kevin is the best! He's a gifted storyteller, a comedian, and an awesome historian too! There wasn't a question he did not know the answer to, and our family learned so much about historical sites, buildings, and landmarks as we made our way up to the North Shore. We stopped at the Macadamia Nut farm for complimentary Kona Coffee and samplings, then we headed to a fruit stand to purchase delicious chicharrónes and the sweetest papaya I've ever tasted. What I loved most about the tour was how accommodating Kevin was. The activity options were separated into two groups: morning and afternoon. We were asked to choose one from each category; however, the two we really wanted to participate in were both morning activities (Waimea Falls and snorkeling at Shark's Cove). Kevin timed it so that we could do both in the morning and have the afternoon free to eat lunch, enjoy shave ice, and shop in Haleiwa. We loved this tour so much that we rented a car the next day so we could further explore some of the beaches he pointed out. The shuttle was convenient and arrived on time. My only disappointment was that we only had about 40 minutes to snorkel. We could have easily spent an hour and a half there because there was so much to see! It was a hassle to get the snorkeling equipment and a safety briefing, put our valuables in a rented locker, cross the street to the beach, put our gear on, snorkel, then return the equipment and catch the bus on time. I wish this activity were an afternoon option. Other than that, we made memories to last a lifetime, and I highly recommend booking the tour with Kevin. He is extremely knowledgeable, punctual, and so much fun!

Uncle Kevin was a breath of fresh air, funny, full of information, and a great host. Tons of fun facts on the ride and a perfect amount of time at each stop. To note: I was under the impression surf lessons was an option as activity two but apparently you have to pay extra for that and book the evening before. BRING CASH FOR LOCKERS I do think that bus could use an A/C update for the back seats- we were pretty toasty. Maybe having a map of the route we take on bus would be handy as well, charging outlets would be great. Other than that wonderful day!

We have located our long lost Uncle Kevin ! And he knows Oahu like the back of his hand and better than google . We had an awesome time exploring the north shore and are grateful we located the surf bus to get us there. Highly recommend the surf bus instead of renting a car . We did way more and learned way more if we had gone on our own .

Thank you uncle Kevin, the tour was awesome, you are really knowledgeable and I enjoy the trip a lot, great experience

What an amazing experience and great tour. Highly recommend especially with Uncle Kevin. This dude is amazing far beyond his job. Just overall great person who clearly loves what he does. He wants to ensure people truly enjoy their time and does everything possible to make everything happen. After seeing him after almost 11 years it's cool to see he hasn't changed the passion he had even back then for the beautiful Hawaii you get to experience with him. We had a lovely time and would only do it with Uncle Kevin.

Species Spotlight: Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle (Honu)

Two baby sea turtles are on together on the sand. They are dark in color with a light, tan underbelly.

Scientific name: Chelonia mydas Hawaiian name: Honu Common name: Hawaiian Green sea turtle Status: Endangered in Hawaiian waters

On one of many cosmic nights, the honu, or Hawaiian Green sea turtle, was created - as recounted in the Hawaiian creation chant, Kumulipo.  Born in the realm of pō, or darkness where life is produced and spirits return, the honu continues to be sacred to many Hawaiian families today.  For some in Hawaiʻi, honu are ‘aumākua, or spiritual guardians.

"The night gives birth to rough-backed turtles."

                                                                    -  hawaiian creation chant, kumulipo.

A green sea turtle swims along a reef. It is several shades of brown, spotted with dark spots and a light, tan underbelly.

Habitat and Range

Honu are a migratory species, traveling hundreds or thousands of miles from foraging areas to nesting beaches. Over 95% of the Hawaiian Green sea turtle population nests in French Frigate Shoals in Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument. They largely travel to the main Hawaiian Islands to forage for food and bask on the beaches. Limited nesting and foraging occurs in other locations in the Pacific such as America Samoa, Guam, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. When they are not migrating, honu remain in shallow waters like lagoons, reefs, bays, and shoals to feed and nest along open, undisturbed beaches.

Green sea turtles are also found throughout the world.  Other genetically distinct populations range all over the Pacific, the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts of North and South America, the Mediterranean Sea, and northern parts of the Indian Ocean. But the Hawaiian Green sea turtle exists only in Hawaiian archipelago.

Diet and Life Cycle

Hatchling honu eat a diet of fish and plants, but then switch to a mostly herbivorous diet of algae and seagrass between ages 5 and 7.  Less frequently, juveniles and adults may eat invertebrates like sponges and jellyfish.

Their lifespan is estimated to be 60 to 70 years, but honu do not reach sexual maturity until 25 to 40 years!  And the length of reproductivity varies: ranging from 17 to 23 years.

Once a female can reproduce, she will return to her nesting site every 2 to 5 years and lay anywhere between 3 and 9 clutches.  Each clutch varies between 75 to 200 eggs, with an interval of about 12 days between each clutch.  After months of laying eggs, she returns to the sea to forage. Depending on the temperatures, the eggs may hatch after 45 to 75 days; and the hatchlings emerge usually at night to travel toward the brightest horizon: the ocean.

Threats to the Species

A diver attempts to free a turtle from a net. The turtle sits just below the surface of the water and is tangled in a mound of fishing nets.

  • Predators such as crabs, birds, mongoose, rats, pigs, dogs, fish, and sharks.
  • Intentional poaching and harvesting of eggs.
  • Accidental by-catch, entanglement in fishing lines and nets.
  • Loss of critical nesting beaches due to changing climates.
  • Ocean pollution and marine debris.
  • Coastal development that degrades nesting habitat.
  • Artificial lights that confuse hatchlings from finding the ocean.

Reason for Hope

In Hawaiʻi, thanks to long term collaboration between the state of Hawaiʻi, federal agencies like the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and dedicated local volunteers, the honu population has been increasing over the past two decades.

Innovative research, public outreach, and management efforts that protect habitat and prohibit harvesting and collection of honu have helped protect this vulnerable species.

You can volunteer to help  honu in Hawaiʻi by contacting  Hawaii Marine Animal Response  or Hawaii Wildlife Fund

Baby honu swim just below the surface line.

  • The largest of all hard-shelled sea turtles, the Green Sea Turtle is named not for their shell color appearance, but for the color of their fat and cartilage.
  • Honu are considered “sea cows” as they graze on limu, seagrass, and invertebrates along coral reefs and rocky shorelines.
  • They can dive up to 1,500 ft.
  • They can live up to 100 years.

If you have small children who aren't able to snorkel or swim to see turtles, you can visit the Maui Ocean Center to see the Turtle Lagoon Exhibit. The exhibit features up to six turtles on display that you can view from the surface of the water and underwater. There are also educational programs to teach visitors about the turtles and their importance to marine ecosystems. Kids will also love the 3D humpback whale experience, the living reef display, and the open ocean exhibit with live sharks and rays.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to six of the world's seven species of sea turtles. You can take guided tours to see turtles on the reef, including snorkeling excursions, scuba diving trips, and glass-bottom boat tours. Fitzroy Island is a great spot to see turtles in the wild and at the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Center . Green Island is a family-friendly island where you can often see turtles swimming in the water. The dry season runs from May to October, making this  the ideal time to visit the Great Barrier Reef for the best visibility .

One of the best places to base yourself for trips to the Great Barrier Reef is Cairns on Queensland's northeastern coast. The weather in Cairns is warm year-round, making it a popular tropical vacation destination. There are also plenty of activities on offer for kids. Families can go hiking in rainforests to discover waterfalls, visit the Cairns Aquarium , and see wild animals at Hartley's Crocodile Adventures . There are also plenty of hotels with pools in Cairns, as well as restaurants that cater to all tastes.

Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

Located on Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, Tortuguero National Park is a prime nesting site for leatherbacks, hawksbills, loggerheads, and green sea turtles. In fact, the area was named after the turtles — Tortuguero means "region of turtles." The protected sanctuary has winding canals, lagoons, and sandy beaches where the turtles nest from May to November. Local guides can take you to see the turtles nesting at night. Depending on when you come, you might be able to see the baby turtles hatching and running towards the sea. Just remember to be very quiet and keep a decent distance between you and the turtles.

Tortuguero National Park is about a three-hour drive from the capital city of San Jose. Because most of the turtle activity takes place at night, you'll probably want to stay in the small town of Tortuguero close to the park. There are several hotels and lodges nearby. Aninga Lodge is a kid-friendly spot with comfortable bungalows, a restaurant, a spa, and a turtle-shaped pool. Pachira Lodge is located on the main lagoon and has room packages that include transportation to and from San Jose, entrance to the Sea Turtle Conservancy (STC)  visitor center, and boat rides along the canals.

Akumal, Mexico

Akumal means "place of the turtles" in the Mayan language. This beautiful beach town on the Riviera Maya in Mexico is known for its abundance of green sea turtles. The area is rich in seagrass, which the turtles love feeding on. The soft, sandy beaches are also the perfect environments for nesting. If you go snorkeling in Akumal Bay, there's a good chance you'll encounter a turtle. You can swim in the green zones along Akumal Beach, but the red zones are protected and can only be entered with a guide.

While many people visit Akumal on a day trip from Cancún, the town is actually a very pleasant place to stay. It has a laid-back vibe, which is perfect for a relaxed family beach holiday. At the same time, Akumal has everything you could want in a resort town, including all-inclusive resorts, shops, and restaurants. The beaches have white sand, and the turquoise waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. When you're not swimming with sea turtles, you can take a trip to a cenote nearby, visit the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary , explore ancient Mayan ruins, or go zip-lining in the jungle.

Gili Islands, Indonesia

The Gili Islands are three small islands off the coast of Lombok that are rimmed with sugary, white sand and surrounded by aquamarine waters. They're wildly popular with both tourists and sea turtles. The most common species people encounter around the Gili Islands is the green turtle, although hawksbills are also spotted on occasion. Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three islands and the best spot to see sea turtles. They usually swim along the northeast side of the island in an area called Turtle Point. You can often see turtles just swimming out from the beach.

Gili Trawangan is a car-free island with accommodations to suit all types, including guesthouses, bungalows, beach resorts, and villas. There are also plenty of restaurants and beach bars. The island does have a reputation as a party island though, so if you're looking for something a bit more chill, you may want to consider staying on Gili Air or Gili Meno. Both have hotels and villas that are suitable for families. Gili Meno also has a turtle sanctuary where you can see baby turtles and join release programs for a small donation.

Boa Vista, Cape Verde

Cape Verde is an archipelago off the coast of West Africa that is the third-largest nesting site for loggerhead turtles in the world. Most of the nesting happens on the island of Boa Vista. Several organizations on the island work tirelessly to protect the turtles and their nesting grounds. Between July and October, you can join guided tours to see turtles nesting on the beach. If you're lucky, you may even see baby turtles hatching and be able to help them on their way to the sea.

There are plenty of places to stay on Boa Vista that are perfect for families. All-inclusive resorts are popular choices because they have amenities like swimming pools, restaurants, and spas. Most also offer a wide range of entertainment options like water sports, games for kids, live music, and shows. There are also a handful of hotels and vacation rentals in Sal-Rei, which is the main town on the island. If you want to eat out, there are several restaurants and beach clubs around the island that serve local and international cuisine.

Saona Island, Dominican Republic

With powdery, white sand beaches and incredibly clear waters, it's no wonder sea turtles love Saona Island. This small island is an important nesting site for hawksbill, leatherback, and green turtles. Hawksbills are the most common turtles on the island, nesting mostly on the southern beaches. You might not see turtles on the main tourist beaches here, but you can visit the Saona Island Turtle Sanctuary in the small village of Mano Juan. At the sanctuary, you can visit the turtle hatchery where eggs are kept safe until the baby turtles hatch, and with advanced notice, you may even be able to join a turtle release.

Saona Island is just 12 miles south of the Dominican Republic's main island, making it easy to get to from Punta Cana or Bayahibe. Most people come here on a day trip, although there is a basic bed and breakfast on the island. Several tour companies will take you to the island on a catamaran or speed boat. Some also include a trip to the Saona Island Turtle Sanctuary. Remember that hawksbill turtles are listed as critically endangered, so be very careful where you tread on the beaches and keep your distance if you happen to come across one in the wild.

Koh Tao, Thailand

Koh Tao (which translates to Turtle Island) is one of the most popular diving and snorkeling destinations in Thailand thanks to its clear, calm waters and abundant coral reefs just offshore. Visitors can often spot green and hawksbill turtles while exploring the waters around the island. Many dive centers on the island offer guided tours to turtle hotspots such as Tanote Bay and Buddha Point. You can also see turtles swimming close to shore at spots like Jansom Bay and Sai Daeng Beach.

One of the great things about Koh Tao is that it appeals to so many types of travelers. Families, solo travelers, and partners looking for a relaxing couples beach vacation  will find a wide array of hotels, restaurants, and fun activities to do. If you don't know how to scuba dive, Koh Tao is a great place to learn. Kids 10 years and older can take PADI courses through one of the island's many dive centers. Younger kids can enjoy beach days, boat rides, and cultural activities like Thai dance performances. The Koh Tao Leisure Park has attractions for all ages, including an 18-hole mini golf course, a cinema, pool tables, and a kid's play area.

Fernando De Noronha, Brazil

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fernando de Noronha is a stunning archipelago off the northeast coast of Brazil. The protected marine park is home to a staggering amount of marine life, including hawksbills and green turtles. The female turtles lay their nests on the beaches between the months of December and June, making this the perfect destination during cold weather months for sea turtle lovers. Families can take guided diving and snorkeling trips to swim with the turtles. You can also visit the  Projeto TAMAR open-air sea turtle museum.

It should be noted that Fernando de Noronha is not the easiest or cheapest place to visit. To protect the marine environment, the government limits the number of tourists who can visit the Fernando de Noronha islands every day. Every visitor must pay an environmental preservation fee of R$97.16 (approximately $20) per day. In addition, you'll also have to purchase a ticket to enter the marine park, which costs R$358 (about $72) and is valid for 10 days. While it can be pricey to visit the islands, those who don't mind splashing out will be rewarded with spectacular scenery and the opportunity to spot sea turtles in the wild.

Carlisle Bay, Barbados

Barbados is home to three types of sea turtles: hawksbills, leatherbacks, and green turtles. While the turtles can be found on nearly every coast of the island, Carlisle Bay is one of the top spots to see them gliding gracefully through the water. You can often see the turtles while swimming and snorkeling in the clear waters of the bay. If you prefer guided tours, there are several tour companies that offer diving and snorkeling excursions, catamaran trips, and glass-bottom kayak tours.

It's easy to see why so many families flock to Barbados. The island has beautiful white sand beaches, all-inclusive resorts with attractive amenities, and interesting attractions. Bridgetown is a good place to base yourself if you want to be close to turtles, as that's where you'll find Carlisle Bay. The capital city is also home to historic buildings, inviting shops, and tons of restaurants. Suppose you want to get out of the city and explore the island. In that case, kids will love watching monkeys at the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, exploring underground caverns in Harrison's Cave, and strolling through tropical gardens at the Flower Forest .

Melbourne Beach, Florida, U.S.

Every year between March and October, thousands of sea turtles make their way to Florida's Space Coast to lay their eggs on the soft, sandy beaches. Melbourne Beach is one of their preferred nesting spots. During this time, you can spot loggerhead, leatherback, and green turtles. You may even get to see hatchlings tumbling down the dunes to the ocean. The best way to spot the turtles is on a guided turtle walk with the Sea Turtle Conservancy or Sea Turtle Preservation Society. The walks can be fun and enlightening experiences for turtle lovers of all ages.

Melbourne tends to be less touristy than other places along the Space Coast, but there are still plenty of things to see and do for all ages. Animal lovers can visit the Brevard Zoo or go hiking in the Turkey Creek Sanctuary to see manatees and otters. If the weather takes a turn, you can spend the day at Route 7 for some go-karting, laser tag, or mini-bowling. The Kennedy Space Center is about an hour's drive from Melbourne and a must for future astronauts. Visitors can learn about space exploration, see a real-life space shuttle, and even witness rocket launches at various times throughout the year.

Lhaviyani Atoll, The Maldives

The Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean that consists of nearly 1,200 tropical islands clustered in atolls. With that in mind, choosing the right Maldives island for your vacation style can be tricky. If seeing sea turtles is a top priority for you, then Lhaviyani Atoll is a good bet. Green sea turtles gather on the coral reefs around the islands in the atoll. They particularly like to congregate around Kuredu Island, making this an excellent spot to swim with turtles on a diving or snorkeling trip. Families can also visit the Oliver Ridley Project Marine Center to learn about Kuredu's green turtles.

Kuredu Island Resort & Spa is the only hotel on the tiny island of Kuredu, and it's perfectly primed for families. You can opt for a private pool villa, a water villa on wooden stilts over the ocean, or a beach bungalow right on the sand. Kids will love cooling off in the resort's pools, playing games in the kid's club, and dining at the underwater restaurant while fish swim overhead. The resort also has a golf course, gym, spa, as well as tennis and padel courts.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Isla Mujeres is located just off the coast of Cancún, and it's a beautiful spot to stay or visit on a day trip if you love sea turtles. The clear waters and white sand beaches attract loggerhead, hawksbill, and green turtles, particularly between the mating and nesting seasons from May to September. If you go snorkeling in the waters around the island, you can often see turtles swimming. To see turtles on land, you can visit Tortugranja (The Turtle Farm) to see hatchlings and feed rescued turtles.

If you're looking for a more laid-back Mexican beach vacation , Isla Mujeres is lesser known than nearby Cancún, so it doesn't get the same crowds that its mega-resort neighbor does. The central area of the island is just four blocks by six blocks, making it very walkable. Stroll the streets and you'll find colorful murals, shops, and restaurants. Accommodations range from boutique hotels to all-inclusive beach resorts. There are also tons of kid-friendly activities on offer, including snorkeling tours, zip lining, and a Mayan temple. MUSA is a fascinating underwater museum with hundreds of sculptures by local artists. You can dive and snorkel here or see the sculptures on a glass-bottom boat trip.

Methodology

With so many locations around the world where sea turtles gather, narrowing down the best family-friendly spots was no easy task. Our research led us to these destinations because first and foremost, they are safe to travel to. Crime rates are low and there are no high travel alerts for any of these destinations. In addition, these spots have plenty of amenities that appeal to all ages.

Families can stay at resorts with pools and kid's clubs, go on tours, take part in activities suitable for little ones, and find restaurants serving a wide variety of food to appeal to picky palates. In addition, these spots have conservation initiatives in place to protect the turtles. Children can learn about why turtles are so important for ecosystems and how to safely interact with turtles in the wild. Happy turtle spotting!

36 Hours on Minorca

A bright orange sun starts to dip below the horizon of the ocean, as see through a gap between two rocky cliffs.

Yasmin Fahr, a cookbook author, lives on Minorca part time.

Minorca, one of Spain’s Balearic Islands, sparkles with the same blue-green waters as its more touristy neighbors, Ibiza and Majorca. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993, Minorca offers a quieter and wilder retreat, thanks to residents who have protected the island from further urbanization and development. Still, megayachts and crowds are descending: In 2021, the international gallery Hauser & Wirth opened a 16,000-square-foot arts center , intended to lure wealthy collectors, on an islet near the capital. Despite the encroaching threat of overtourism , Minorca sticks to its “poc a poc,” or “little by little,” way of life, in which siestas are long and opening hours are more of a suggestion. The island also brims with creativity, wildlife and rich history: Just last year, its prehistoric structures became a UNESCO World Heritage site .

  • Cristine Bedfor is a boutique hotel with impeccable interiors. A small pool and a lush garden provide respite from the summer heat. Rooms in May start at €215.
  • For short-term rentals , the capital, Mahón, and its surrounding area are convenient for exploring the island, though availability varies with the season. Camper vans are also popular on the island.
  • The best way to see the island is by renting a car . Taxis are readily available, but ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Lyft are not. There is also a bus service with routes around the island (subject to the season), with single tickets (from €1.35, cash only), available on board.

A natural area with shrubbery and small green hills, with a body of water in the center of the frame. The sky is blue, with some white clouds.

Avid bird watchers gravitate to the trails in S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park , a more than 1,200-acre protected marine reserve on the island’s eastern side, to spot birds of prey like osprey, protected red kites and booted eagles, and the spectacled or Sardinian warbler, depending on the time of year. You can spot sea turtles and land tortoises in the reserve as well as elsewhere on the island. The three main trails range in difficulty level and the duration of the walk (from 40 minutes to one hour). Free entry.

A person walks past two framed portraits on display in a white-walled museum.

Museu de Menorca

In Mahón, the island’s capital, which has a large natural harbor, start by visiting the Museu de Menorca (4 euros, or about $4.33; opening times vary by season). The museum goes all the way from the prehistoric Talayotic civilization to the story of La Menorquina , a ice cream manufacturer founded in 1940 that still sells its desserts in stores. Afterward, visit the Gin Xoriguer distillery, whose recipe dates back to the early 1700s. Find prints of 18th-century maps and copies of Apunt , a local guidebook for cultural happenings, at Island Mood , a store full of Minorcan souvenirs. Meander along the sloping streets to one of the oldest opera houses in Spain, Teatre Principal de Maó , built in 1829. It’s surrounded by stores like Lucera , which specializes in colorful handmade ceramics.

A plate of whole prawns, served with a wedge of lemon. A glass of beer is visible in the background.

Stroll Cales Fonts, a picturesque port lined with boats swaying in lapping green waters, before dinner. Stop at Fausto for modern clothing with earthy tones and clean lines. There are several options for dinner: Trébol , open since 1969 and with a rustic interior and casual outdoor seating, serves local products like Mahón mussels in white wine (€16) and grilled Minorcan prawns (€35). Sa Punta , slightly more formal, offers panoramic views of the water and has a thoughtful, seasonal menu that includes eggplant croquettes (€9.50) and bread made with Xeixa wheat, an ancient grain grown on the island (€3.50). For a more lively, summery vibe, share plates of oysters (€5.50), scallops (€20) and steak a la plancha (€22), at Pintarroja . (Note that many businesses on Minorca are open seasonally.)

Boats moored in a harbor at night. The water reflects the warm lights coming from restaurants and bars along the harbor.

Stroll Cales Fonts, a picturesque port lined with boats.

A black horse rests its head over the top of a metal gate.

Slip into a beekeeping suit at Son Felip , a regenerative and organic farm in the north of the island, that includes open fields, forests, coastline and a 2,000-year-old olive tree. Xec, the agricultural director — and bee whisperer — explains the curious nature of these hard-working insects and offers a tasting of the farm’s award-winning honey before securing everyone in their bee suits to visit the hives and see the production firsthand. As he said on a recent tour, if you stay calm, then the bees will be calm — it’s time to use your yogic breathing. This two-and-a-half-hour apiculture workshop (€45) is limited to a small group and subject to time changes depending on the season, so it’s best to contact the farm ahead. Son Felip also offers farm tours, horseback riding and overnight stays.

People stand at the counter of a fish stall within an open-air market. A sign reads "PEIX I MARISC JORDI."

The fish market in Ciutadella

Get lost in Ciutadella, Minorca’s capital until 1722, a town of colorful buildings, labyrinth-like cobbled streets and former palaces. Pop out onto the Contramurada, a road built atop the moat that once encircled the medieval walled center. The Minorca Cathedral (€7.20), which was constructed and restored over centuries, still marks the opening and closing of the wall gates by ringing its bell. Ciutadella is full of artisan shops: Visit Carmen Cocoon for handmade jewelry and Kiniria for leather handbags . Pick up a beach blanket at the homeware store Ses Orenetes and shop for a breezy dress at Sent S’illa . Then head to the orange-tree-studded Plaza de la Libertad, a square with a lively fish market, butcher shops and a farmers’ market. Savor a coffee at Can Padet (€1.70) and pick up some of Minorca’s best goat cheese at the Cas Ferrer de Sa Font stand.

Much is closed on the island from around 2 to 5 p.m., give or take an hour, depending on the day, season or the store owner’s whim, so it is the perfect time to visit Algaiarens Beach . There are no lounge chairs or stands for water or food, so bring whatever you’d like. To hike instead, find a red-and-white signpost near the parking lot closest to the beach; it marks the Camí de Cavalls , a 115-mile walking route that circles the island. The path, a centuries-old horse trail, has been meticulously restored to allow hikers and mountain bikers to freely experience the environmental diversity of the island. Take a one-and-a-half-hour (round-trip) hike west to Cala Morell, a cove, turning around when you hit a parking lot. A tip: If you go through a gate, always close it behind you, as it’s to protect the animals.

A bird's-eye view of a sand-colored stone quarry with many geometric shapes that make it resemble a stone maze.

In Minorca’s restaurants, stores and hotels, you’ll most likely notice a sand-colored stone used for arched walkways, ceilings or walls. The stone, called marés, is found on the island. Peer into the vast depth of one of Minorca’s preserved stone quarries, Pedreres de s’Hostal , in Ciutadella. After the quarry, which dates back to the 19th century, ceased operations in the 1990s, it was at risk of being filled with rubbish. Today it is protected by the nonprofit foundation Lithica , which uses the space for concerts and other cultural events on summer evenings. The quarry area, more than 18 acres, includes gardens and mazes that are open to the public. It is recommended to book ahead, especially during the high summer season, as admission and parking are limited (€7).

End the day with a dreamy sunset paddle tour in Cala Morell, which has blue-green water perfect for snorkeling, a small beach and platforms for sunbathing and swimming. The two-hour trip with Paddle Tour Menorca (€45) includes visits to caves and ends on paddle boards on the tranquil sea, watching the sun dip into the ocean, complete with a cold beer (or water). All levels welcome, but availability is subject to the wind and season. If it’s too breezy, then head to Hola Ola , a cocktail bar about an eight-minute drive from Ciutadella’s center, which is perfectly positioned for sunset viewing. Sip a mojito made with a local gin (€9) or a refreshing beer like a Minorca-brewed Grahame Pearce or a Rosa Blanca , from Majorca (both €3.70).

People sit on an outdoor bar terrace drinking and watching the sun set over the ocean ahead.

Hola Ola is a beach bar that is perfectly positioned for mojitos at sunset.

A person walks through a gallery with several large paintings on display.

For art lovers, there are galleries sprinkled throughout Minorca, like Etesian in Ciutadella or the luxe Hauser & Wirth on Isla del Rey near Mahón’s harbor. In the hilly, historic town of Alaior, LÔAC (€5), a contemporary art museum in a former schoolhouse, shows works by prominent Modern and contemporary Spanish artists, like Joan Miró and Jaume Plensa. The museum’s opening times vary with the seasons, as is the case on much of the island, so it is best to check the website before your visit.

A boat floats on turquoise water in a cove area with cliffs on each side.

Cales Coves

Relax by the sea, as little is open on Sundays. Minorca is windy, so choose a beach that is not facing into the gusts (the website and app Windy is helpful). In the north, Cala Pregonda is a stunning beach with golden sand, distinctive rock formations and clear waters for snorkeling or swimming. It requires an approximately 40-minute uncovered walk to reach, unless you come in by boat. In the south, Cala Mitjana offers a short walk to a white-sand beach with rocky ledges for sunbathing. Or view the burial caves of the Talayotic civilization dug into the cliffs at Cales Coves , also in the south, with rocky inlets for swimming and sunbathing. For a traditional Spanish lunch, make reservations at Molí d’es Racó in the town of Es Mercadal if you’re heading to Pregonda or Mitjana , or enjoy local fish or vegetables at El Romero in Mahón.
