Qatar airways introduces the most flexible flight change policy you’ve ever seen.

T ravel is defined by uncertainty these days. No one is completely comfortable booking their next flight, because we have no idea how the global health situation might look tomorrow. Qatar Airways is trying to give passengers peace of mind, and encourage them to book, by introducing a new flight change policy that might be the most flexible the world has ever seen.

In a press release dated May 14, 2020, the airline explained that it will allow travelers to change their flight dates and destinations as often as they need for free (new destinations need to be within 5,000 miles of the original one). Travelers will also be able to change their departure city as long as they are in the same country. No fare differences will be charged for travel completed by December 31, 2020.

Travelers also have the option of swapping tickets for Qmiles or travel vouchers with an added 10 percent value (valid for two years), or putting their existing ticket on hold for up to two years. And if a flight gets canceled, the airline will issue a full cash refund to passengers.

Qatar Airways Flexible Waiver Policy For Your Future Travel Plans

In the face of rapidly spreading coronavirus, the aviation industry has got highly impacted as border restrictions came into place and the pandemic destroying tickets sale as people are worried about contracting the virus and the lengthy quarantine periods.

To entice the anxious passengers back, Qatar Airways have introduced flexible waiver policies to offer greater choice and peace of mind to passengers when they book their trip. Alternatively, Emirates is also one of the airlines who have offered flexible waiver policies for passengers. Emirates is providing free global cover for passenger’s COVID-19 medical expenses with quarantine costs.

Whether you have booked or planning to book a trip until 31 December 2020, Qatar Airways flexible waiver policy will allow you to plan your trips confidently . They have implemented a customer-friendly waiver policy to deal with these unprecedented times by providing passengers some relief for their future travel plans.

Qatar Airways Extended Waiver Policy

With the ongoing situation of the pandemic, it is difficult for anyone to book their travel plan with absolute certainty. With this in mind, Qatar Airways have extended their Flexible booking policies to offer even more choice to our passengers. Passengers want to ensure that when they are ready to fly, they can fly with an airline they can trust. But if the passenger needs to change their plans, they can have options to make this easy for them to re-plan their future travel.

Qatar waiver policies will help the traveler who has booked or planning to book their future travel up to December 31st, 2020. The special waiver policies will let travelers plan their trip with peace of mind. Don’t miss out to check these customer-friendly waiver policies before planning your next trip.

1. Unlimited Changes

If you plan to book up to 30 September 2020, you will be given greater flexibility up to 3 days before departure by having the option of changing our travel date free of charge or exchanging for a future travel voucher.

With the flexible waiver policy, Qatar Airways will allow unlimited change of date so that passengers can change their destination as much as they need if it is within 5,000 miles from the launch. Any fare discrepancies will be paid by the airline for travel completed before December 31, 2020, after which ticket regulations will apply. All travel tickets booked until December 31, 2020, will be valid for two years from the date of issue.

2. Hold on to their ticket

The passenger can travel when they are ready to fly, with this Hold on tickets concept. However, the passengers can extend purchased ticket validity for 2 years from the date of ticket issuance for greater flexibility. Qatar Airways travel tickets booked for travel until December 31, 2020, will be automatically extended for 24 months.

Whenever passengers will be ready to travel again, within 24 months from the day they have purchased tickets, they just need to contact a travel agent or Emirates to rebook the flight tickets.

3. Swap for Qmiles

Swap your Qmiles ticket and redeem them on extra baggage or cabin upgrades when the time is right for you to travel. You will earn 100 Qmiles for every 1 USD which is valid for at least three years, so you can have the flexibility to choose how, when and for whom to redeem them.

4. Exchange for future travel

If you are not ready to travel during this unique time, well, we have this option for you. Here, you can exchange your travel tickets for a future travel voucher with 10% additional value. Travel vouchers are now valid for two years from the date of voucher issuance.

5. Refund your ticket

Additionally, if the passenger wants to cancel their trip we will give them a full refund, they won’t be penalized for the refund request. Customers who have opted to Hold on to their ticket or opted for a travel voucher may still apply for a refund.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club Flexi awards offer members access to more seats at twice the usual price.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club offers the greatest number of award seats for Qatar Airways flights amongst all loyalty programs.

Since Qsuites business class is such a competitive product, finding an award seat at the lowest “Saver” rate can prove to be quite difficult.

However, Qatar Airways Privilege Club also features “Flexi” awards, which offer access to more seats in exchange for a greater amount of points.

In the Qatar Airways Privilege Club loyalty program, one unique feature available to members is Flexi awards.

With Flexi pricing, you get access to a greater number of award seats, albeit at twice the cost of the “Saver” off-peak award price.

It’s worth noting that this is much different than dynamic pricing, since the cost is always fixed at twice the amount of a standard, off-peak award seat, and doesn’t otherwise fluctuate.

When you search for an award flight on the Qatar Airways website, you may notice the word Flexi in the search results. This denotes that the price you see is twice that of the standard, off-peak “Saver” rate.

If you don’t see Flexi above the search results, then you know that you’re paying the lower “Saver” rate, which is a great deal.

For example, a “Saver” award for a one-way flight from Montreal to Doha costs 70,000 Avios on off-peak dates in Qsuites business class .

However, the Flexi price for the same flight is 140,000 Avios.

You may also see Flexi pricing displayed on a green flag with “Q2” written on it. Flexi tends to appear more often on the Qatar Airways website, and the Q2 banner tends to appear on the app; however, it may also appear on the website.

In either event, they both refer to the same thing.

Flexi pricing is only available for flights with Qatar Airways in economy, business class, and First Class booked through Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

You won’t find Flexi pricing for Qatar Airways flights booked with other loyalty programs, nor will you find Flexi pricing for other airlines booked through Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

Qatar Airways recently introduced peak and off-peak pricing to its loyalty program, with flights priced higher during peak dates on “Saver” rates.

Flexi prices aren’t affected by this distinction, and you’ll pay the same Flexi price whether you book a peak or an off-peak date.

Are Qatar Airways Privilege Club Flexi Awards a Good Deal?

Ideally, there would be ample award availability on all routes at the “Saver” level. Unfortunately, this just isn’t the case.

Instead, Flexi pricing offers access to a greater inventory of award seats, albeit at a higher cost.

On the one hand, having access to more award seats that can be booked with points is always better than not having any seats available whatsoever.

Furthermore, since Flexi prices are fixed, they aren’t subject to the same fluctuation in prices that you’ll find with programs that use dynamic pricing. In this regard, pricing is still predictable, as long as you can find an award seat.

In comparison to the cash rates for Qatar Airways flights, you can still wind up getting a good return in value with your points on Flexi awards.

For example, a round-trip flight from Montreal to Doha in Qatar Airways Qsuites business class costs around $7,200 (CAD).

At the “Saver” level, those same flights would price out at 140,000 Avios, plus around $300 (CAD) in taxes and fees . After accounting for the cash component of the award booking, you’d have netted a value of around 4.94 cents per Avios (CAD), which is excellent.

With a Flexi award, those same flights would price out at 280,000 Avios, plus the same amount of taxes and fees. In this situation, and after accounting for the cash component, you’d still have come out with a value of around 2.47 cents per Avios (CAD).

We value Avios at 2.0 cents per point (CAD), and even with Flexi awards, you’re still able to redeem points at higher than our target valuation. 

While it’s not nearly as good as what you’d get at the “Saver” level, your points are still punching above their weight, especially when compared to the cash fare. 

Keep in mind that there are often transfer bonuses to both Qatar Airways Privilege Club and British Airways Executive Club .

Since you can freely transfer Avios between accounts , you could leverage a transfer bonus promotion to either, and then move them around from within the Avios ecosystem for a Qatar Airways redemption.

If you’re able to make the most of a transfer bonus, which usually results in 30–50% bonus Avios, then you’d be taking some of the sting out of Flexi pricing.

For example, a one-way flight from Seattle to Doha in Qsuites business class costs 140,000 Avios with Flexi pricing.

A 30% transfer bonus would effectively reduce the number of points required down to 107,700 points. Similarly, a 40% transfer bonus would bring the effective cost down to 100,000 points, and a 50% transfer bonus would lower it even further to 93,400 points.

At those values, it’s not an entirely unreasonable price to pay for one of the world’s best business class products.

It’s also worth noting that booking Qatar Airways Flexi awards may be the only way to secure award seats for a larger group on the same flight.

If there are more than two people travelling together, it can be rather hard, if not impossible, to find multiple “Saver” award seats with Qatar Airways. This is especially the case on routes to or from North America.

By combining Flexi awards with “Saver” awards, you’d have a much better chance of flying together, perhaps even in the Qsuites Quad .

Qatar Airways offers Flexi awards through its Privilege Club loyalty program.

In exchange for a greater inventory of award seats, Flexi awards are twice the cost of the “Saver” off-peak awards.

While it’s always a better deal to book award seats at the “Saver” level, it’s not always possible, especially on popular routes.

Flexi rewards give you a better chance of scoring a seat in one of the world’s best business class products; however, it’ll just come at a steeper price.

By transferring points during a transfer bonus event, you can effectively reduce the number of points required, which also takes a bit of the sting out of Flexi pricing.

This applied to bookings through to 30 September 2020, for travel up to 31 December 2020. Now that this has passed, the web pages have been updated and things have been extended.

Qatar Airways Updated Flexible Change Policy

The one world alliance carrier has extended their policy. You are now able to make unlimited date changes on your existing ticket through to 31 December 2021. You are also still welcome to hold on to your ticket or swap for a travel voucher with an additional 10% of the base fare added on top.

Those are the changes you can make voluntarily. Where your travel has been impacted in some way (for example, schedule changes or cancellations), there are additional options available. You can swap your ticket for Qmiles if you’re a member of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club or elect to get a refund.

The updated policy is effective 1 October 2020 and covers bookings made through to 31 December 2020. Full details are available online on the Qatar Airways travel with confidence web page .

Overall Thoughts

There are differences to the flexible change policy as it was previously, so it is worth checking out. It still remains one of the most generous, if not the most generous out there.

People holding tickets should check the details on the web site above. At this stage it remains to be seen what other airlines are doing. I do know that British Airways extended their policy by two weeks from 30 September to 13 October, but I would expect further consideration there.

Yes, that is correct. As long as you have booked before 31 December 2020, you can change your flights completely free, as long as there is availability in the original booking class. That is not the actual class you’re flying, but the fare class you booked in – ie – J, C, D, I or R for business or Y, B, H, K, M, L, V, S, N, Q, T, O, W, G for economy.
