Layover In Manila – The Ultimate Guide 2024

Manila, Philippines

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport is the airport that serves the Philippine city of Manila. It's located a few kilometers outside of the city close to the smaller city of Paranaque. It's a large airport with four terminals, three of which deal with international flights while the fourth caters to internal flights only.

With Manila Airport being as close as it is to the city, having a stopover there, no matter how brief, means you'll be able to get away from the facility and enjoy your time doing something other than watching planes take off or land. There's no direct train connection between the airport and the city, so the easiest and quickest way to get into Manila is by taxi which takes around twenty minutes. There's also a shuttle bus service, the UBE Express, which operates five different routes from the airport into various parts of Manila. Don’t forget to make your trip easier on yourself by dropping off your bags at a Manila luggage storage before you begin exploring.

6 hour layover in Manila

When you're on a six-hour layover at Manila Airport, stash your bags as fast as you can in the nearest suitcase storage facility and head for the UBE Express shuttle bus. Catch the bus outside of whichever terminal you landed at - it passes by all four - for the route that goes to the SM Mall of Asia and Entertainment City. You can have a browse around the shops or have a flutter at the casino, then get back on the bus to head back to the airport in time for your Manila connection.

  • Pre-purchase your ticket for the bus at the UBE Express counters located in arrivals.
  • If getting through the airport rigmarole takes up too much of your short layover for you to risk going anywhere, stay at the airport and have a dim sum meal at the Tsim Sha Tsui Dimsum and Tea Bar.

Skyline of Manila, Philippines

8 hour layover in Manila

With Manila Airport being so close to the city, on an eight-hour layover, you'll have time to take a short walking tour of the historic district. You can do this independently by downloading an informative app from the internet or going accompanied by a local guide. One of the more fascinating areas of Manila is the Spanish Colonial Quarter where there are buildings over four hundred years old and the impressive Manila Cathedral.

  • Get a real feel for the antiquity of the district by taking a horse and carriage ride through the streets.
  • Always keep in mind that the traffic in Manila can be an absolute nightmare, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get back to the airport.

Manila, Philippines

10 hour layover in Manila

Manila is a real cultural melting pot and you'll experience part of that if you head into the city's Chinatown on your layover. It's a bustling district with a character all of its own. Reputed to be the oldest Chinatown in the world, you'll find a labyrinth of streets lined with eclectic stores, Buddhist temples, and lots of food stalls selling everything from tofu in soy sauce to mooncake. If the pavement chaos is too much for you, make it easier by touring around in a tuk-tuk.

  • If you're on a late afternoon layover, a great spot to head for to see the sun set over the city is the Manila Baywalk. The two-kilometer-long promenade extends between the American Embassy and the Philippine Cultural Center.
  • Relax over a drink in the yacht marina on the Baywalk before getting back to the airport in time for your Manila connection.

12 hour layover in Manila

When you have a twelve-hour layover you'll be able to fit in things like visiting Manila's National Museum of Fine Art . It's a treasure trove of beautiful masterpieces that deserve a leisurely viewing. After you've seen all you want to see, take a stroll around Rizal Park which is next to the museum, or if you're a history fan you can join a walking tour of the park and learn about the person whose name it carries and his role in Manila's past.

  • If you feel that Manila may be too hectic for you to enjoy exploring independently, join a small group tour led by a qualified guide. Tours of this type usually last about five hours and often include a horse and carriage ride.
  • Take a slow sail around Manila Bay or go inland and take a short cruise across Laguna Lake.

Manila, Philippines

24 hour layover in Manila

There are some incredible sights to be seen in Manila and even with a twenty-four-hour layover you'll be struggling to fit them all in. If you're feeling adventurous, take a 4x4 trip up into the mountains to Mount Pinatubo. Once there you can hike up to the volcanic crater, which contains a stunningly beautiful emerald green lake. It's an exhausting outing that will take up around fifteen hours of your overnight layover, but compensates by being totally different, and you'll sleep well on your connecting flight if nothing else.

  • If the Manila heat is just too much for you, consider heading to the cooler Tagaytay area where the mountain air is fresher and the scenery amazing. It's a shorter trip out than Mount Pinatubo and will only take up a few hours unless you decide to stay longer.
  • If the sound of running water does it for you, head out to Hidden Valley Springs and hike the trail along the gorge and by the waterfall.
  • Volcano tourism doesn't have to be either dangerous or strenuous. Visit the Taal Volcano and you'll be totally enchanted by the size of it and the landscapes it sits in.

  • mcgarylj 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to see the Banaue Rice Terrace, and the countryside around it. We had a great time, and our guide Dennis was so knowledgeable and friendly. The group was great and our time was well spent. Dennis knew the right spots to take us for our best exposure to the food and countryside. I would highly recommend this tour. • thisisstellayo 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles The price is more than TWICE HIGHER than other agencies. Go search online. Again, yes, the price is more than TWICE HIGHER than other agencies with totally the same content. We experienced a VERY BAD experience in choosing the Magestic Pagsanjan Falls Tour of Gray Line. First of all, this 11-seater van is very spacious for our three passengers, but it is not comfortable at all because of the bumps and bumps along the way. We are wondering whether there is a problem with the shock absorber. (And whether they use the budget on providing big cars??) Secondly, there are a driver and a tour guide. However, they gave nothing of introduction of the tour. It was like there were 2 people accompanying with the ride, being silence along the way... I remember the only sentence that he said "it’s going to be a 2 hours and 20 minutes boat trip to the falls", and nothing more. He did not provide any introductions to the site and did not provide any precautions that we did not know what would happen during the boat trip at all. Therefore, in the absence of sunscreen for over an hour on a big big sunny day, I wore a no sleeves mini dress. Therefore, we were seriously sunburned. After the trip we complained to him, he just asked us "Didn’t we googled to get to know about this trip before?" (So what is the tour guide for???) Moreover, without informed before departed, we did not go through the waterfall neither enter the cave. After we asked the boat men then finally understood that it was because of the rain yesterday which made the water stronger (too dangerous). However, we did not get noticed in advance. BECAUSE OUR TOUR GUIDE DID NOT KNOW THAT SITUATION EITHER! It was so disappointing there were no bamboo boats to take us go through the falls. In conclusion, it was a boring day tour with a bad attitude tour guide. We then canceled our trip to Taal volcano the other day, but they told us they were not sure if they could cancel or refund "up to 50%" of the cost. They even do nothing, only regretting the situation we have today. This is non-sense at all! Now, we have no idea what to do now, even too late to book another tour tomorrow. These basically ruin our vacation in manila. ...The price is more than TWICE HIGHER than other agencies... - 4 Days passed No reply, no refund Read more Written October 15, 2019
  • Michael M 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Four hours to see the sights on Old and New Manila Booked a tour to see the sights in Manila...went to the American cemetery, Rizal Park, and Old Manila but was shown the sights as we "drove" around (mostly sitting in traffic). Guide was excellent. Provided great historical context. Have traveled the world but this was the first guide tour I ever took because I just didn't feel comfortable navigating Manila....glad I did. No time for lunch so eat before you go....and have a positive attitude as you try and figure out how anyone can get anywhere in Manila with that traffic. Read more Written May 23, 2019

  • paullegate 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A whirlwind tour of the sights of Manila We booked a Gray Line Manila Old & New tour which started at The Peninsula Hotel but included a feeder mini bus pick from our hotel in Ortigas Centre. The tour was very good with full running commentary from the very knowledgeable guide, most of the main attractions were covered with a short time spent at the main sights for photo opportunities. It was a very good tour and we would consider using Gray Line again for future excursions. Read more Written May 9, 2018

  • vjames8 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Don't waste your time or money. Do the tours yourself, 'cause there's little difference. They claim to be "fully guided tours." They are not. They are basically a shuttle service in between the sites with commentary in between. Once you are on site, you're on your own. They are not tour guides within the sites themselves. There was one site that was skipped altogether (Neilson Tower), and 2 sites that we just saw for a split second from our windows without a stop (Coconut Palace, Folk Arts Theatre). Also, one of the most important sites to me was given a mere 15 min stop (Manila American Cemetary of WWII Vets). Also, we couldn't always understand our guide because at times he was facing the front, yet speaking to us who are seated in the back. He was even nodding off and falling asleep on Roxas. My advice is to research the sites and go there on your own. We paid 48 USD each. Read more Written December 14, 2017
  • packedandready2go 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Interesting overview of Manila with lots of traffic To be honest Manila does not feature as many must see points of interest as most other major world cities. Nonetheless the Old and New City tour is well worth it. It provides a good historic and geographic overview of Manila and the surrounding cities in 4hours. Our guide, Neal, was both informative and funny. The highlights included the memorial to the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in WWII and the Rezal Museum in Fort Santiago dedicated to the father of the Philippines. My friend and I were lucky as there were no other clients so we had a private tour. The tour is offered daily at either 9:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. and costs $48. The only drawback is the crowded Manila traffic which must be negotiated. Read more Written November 30, 2017

  • Nick_Harris 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles THE best way to see the sights of Manila if you are a tourist. We had a two night stay at the Marriott in Manila and the staff at the hotel fixed us up with a half day tour. The driver, Drew, picked us up at our hotel and took us to the Fairmont, where the other four members of our party and our guide Omar joined us. The tour gave us a great insight into the city and visited the US War Cemetery, the statue of Rizal, the walled city of Intramuros, Fort Santiago, St Augustine’s church and the cathedral amongst other places. It was very well paced, and very informative. Omar was an excellent and very knowledgable guide - he answered all questions that were put to him and was full of interesting stories and anecdotes. Drew was a brilliant driver and seemed to know all of the best ways of making progress in the horrendous Manila traffic. When my wife and I visit new cities, we usually like to ‘do our own thing’ using public transport. For all sorts of well documented reasons, I would NOT recommend this in Manila - the Jeepneys are great, but you need to know where you are going before you use them. Without a shadow of a doubt it was worth paying that bit extra and using a proper tour company and I don’t think you will go wrong with Grey Line Tours. Read more Written March 12, 2017

The tour guide was named Omar. Omar was very congenial and pleasant. He took the time to provide much commentary and also customize my trip for me by adding in the American Cemetary. The American cemetary was outstanding! Highly recommend to see it and would see it again but that would be another review. Back to the tour comments, spent a lot of time driving in the vehicle which wasn't the greatest thing. When finally getting to the top of the mountain to see the volcano, it was disappointing. Was parked along a busy and dirty road/area. Not at all what I envisioned. Was then taken to a chicken restaurant and had a meal. Meal was good and the view there was excellent. Went to a jeepeny assempbly plant and also a bamboo organ church. Both were ok to good. Nothing amazing but it's all part of the package. The driving was a little rough as the driver appeared to be taking chances with passing that I never would. Overall I think I would choose another tour. Read more Written February 14, 2017

We enjoyed each of the visits and we were glad that we did not do a combo Manila tour as we had plenty to take up the full day. It was fun to get out of Manila and out into countryside. A hassle and worry-free arrangement for a transfer from NAIA to your hotel. It was very easy to make a booking and the rates were very reasonable. The prices are set and so there are no worries about whether a local taxi driver might take advantage of you. The driver contact info are provided a few days before the arrival date so either the driver or passenger can make the initial contact to set a meeting point at NAIA. It is extremely useful to have WhatsApp set up on your mobile phone. We booked them twice for two different travel dates and had no issues with them. Will do this again the next time we visit Manila again.

The pickup at the airport and ride to the hotel went very smoothly. Very nice driver who also stopped for me to go buy some water. Nice first impression of the Philippines!

Airport transfer was very smooth and perfectly organised. After booking had to change the pick up time due to flight changes, which was easy and not a problem. On the day of the transfer we have received the drivers details and car number plate by email and have been kept updated by email. Communication with the driver upon landing for the pick up was very easy by WhatsApp and the driver was there on time. All in all a great service I would be very happy to take again anytime.

What to expect when visiting Manila

Manila is the capital of the Philippines — an old city often disregarded by travellers who use it only as a gateway to the country’s more visually appealing islands. But if you have an extra day in your itinerary, we think Manila’s colourful history is a great way to kick off your trip.

Explore the walled city of Intramuros, Fort Santiago, Manila Cathedral and San Agustin Church — all of which were first built in the late 1500s. Art and anthropology also attract many locals to Manila . You will find here the National Museum, a complex of three museum buildings that tell the story of the Filipinos.

Manila Airport Terminals

Manila Airport has 4 terminals, each with its own separate building. It’s important to be aware of which terminal you will land in or depart from, as the roads around the airport tend to be very busy. If you go to the wrong terminal, you’ll end up losing some time.

Terminal 1: This terminal serves international flights from different airlines such as Thai Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates and others.

Terminal 2: This terminal is the main hub for the country’s official flag carrier – Philippine Airlines or PAL. The North Wing is used for international flights, while the South Wing is used for domestic flights. However, PAL also has flights that park at or depart from Terminal 3.

Terminal 3:  Terminal 3 houses international flights not served at Terminal 1. Aside from this, there are also a few domestic flights. Cebu Pacific, Tiger Air, and Silk Air use this terminal.

Terminal 4:  PAL and Cebu Pacific flights that use propeller planes for domestic routes use this small and old terminal. There are also other airlines that utilize Terminal 4 for domestic flights.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to travel between the terminals, it’s easiest to book a Grab taxi, costing around 200 PHP ($3.50). Although there is a free shuttle bus operating each hour, there is no set departure time and they tend to get very crowded.

2 ways to get from Manila Airport

Where to stay in manila.

Still looking for accommodation? Don't forget to check out our favourite places to stay in Manila at the bottom of this page.

Manila Airport by Taxi

A taxi is the most convenient way to get to and from Manila Airport . Taxis are hard to miss, as they are usually parked outside of the arrivals hall.

There are three types of taxis you can book from the airport to Manila city centre. There is the coupon taxi , the metered airport taxi , and the metered regular taxi . We explain them all below, but first, we would like to highlight booking a taxi with Grab .

Grab (Asian Uber)

If you have a mobile sim card, you can order a Grab straight from Manila Airport. This is the cheapest and most convenient private transfer you can get here. If you don’t have a sim card, we recommend considering getting one.

WiFi is pretty bad in the Philippines and a sim card can save you a lot of hassle and frustration. You can buy your sim card as soon as you arrive and already save part of the costs with the taxi ride to your hotel. I’m sure you won’t regret getting one!

There’s a Grab booth located outside the airport terminal where you could ask for assistance in booking your ride. Grab rates depend on your destination, but they typically start at 245 PHP ($4.30) if you’re heading to Makati .

Coupon Taxi

Coupon taxis are white with a blue and yellow labels on each side of the car. The fares for coupon taxis are fixed, depending on which area your destination belongs to.

If you prefer this kind of taxi, just approach the coupon taxi counter at Manila Airport. Tell them where you want to be dropped off, and the staff will hand you a slip with the quoted price. Another member of the staff will guide you to the taxi.

Make sure to keep your coupon for the entire journey and hand it only to the driver upon arrival at your destination .

Note that coupon taxis are only available from Manila Airport. Coupon taxis do not pick up passengers on the way back to the airport.

Metered Airport Taxis

These are yellow taxis that are operated by the airport. They have a flag down rate of 70 PHP ($1.20), which makes them more expensive than regular taxis. Yellow metered taxi fares to areas in Metro Manila start from 300 PHP ($5.20), but it still depends on your destination and the traffic.

Yellow taxis heading back to the airport can be hailed from the streets.

Metered Regular Taxis

Regular metered taxis are the cheapest among all the taxis available at Manila Airport. The flag down rate is 45 PHP ($0.80). Fares going to Metro Manila cities start from 2,220 PHP ($39), depending on the traffic and your destination.

Keep in mind that regular metered taxis are usually parked outside of the departure area, not the arrival area. They are not affiliated with airport services, so always exercise caution and ask for a metre reading.

TIP : Always ask for a metered taxi so you end up paying the right price!

Terminal 1: This terminal services international flights from different airlines such as Thai Airways, Qatar Airways, Emirates and others.

Private Cars via BookAway

For trusted drivers and excellent customer service, you can also book your ride online through BookAway.

This can be a convenient option if you are travelling in large groups. Rates start from 2,220 PHP ($39) for a 2-seater private transfer and 3,320 PHP ($58) for a 5-seater private transfer.

Manila Airport by Airport Shuttle

Air21 operates a premium airport bus service called UBE Express . These buses drop off passengers only at specific stops. Thus, knowing where your hotel is will help you decide if the shuttle bus is a convenient option.

UBE Express offers various routes in Metro Manila. The nearer routes are Makati and Manila . If you’re heading north towards Quezon City, you can take the Araneta City bus. The South Park bus goes south in Alabang.

You can buy your ticket from the UBE Express booth or pay using a beep card (reloadable card). Tickets start from 150 PHP ($2.60) for the Makati and Manila routes and 200 PHP ($3.50) for the Araneta City and Alabang routes.

Travel time is usually 30 minutes to 1 hour, but it will still depend on road and traffic conditions.

Departure and arrival station

UBE Express buses offer pick-up only at NAIA Terminal 3 . If your flight lands at Terminals 1, 2, or 4, you still need to go to Terminal 3 to take the airport shuttle.

The buses are parked in Bays 11 and 12 at Terminal 3, and the booth where you can buy your tickets is in Bay 10. You can look around for their signboard or ask the airport staff to direct you.

If you’re taking the shuttle to the airport for your flight, the bus can drop you off at any NAIA terminal. Note that some of their trips get cancelled, which they announce on the UBE Express Facebook page .

Moalbaol town view

The article states “hese are yellow taxis that are operated by the airport. They have a flag down rate of 60 PHP ($1.05), which makes them more expensive than regular taxis. Yellow metered taxi fares start from 300 PHP”.

1. Flag down rate is PHP 70 2. There is no minimum of PHP 300. It just depends on distance

As a beside – these days it seems like all yellow cabs I take from airport have their meters running very fast. Nowadays I take the approach to not even mention it during the ride but just bring up at my destination that “there must be something wrong with your meter as it says 30km whereas this distance is less than 15km so let me pay what I usually pay for this ride” – and they never argue as they know they are wrong.

Thanks for sharing your experience, we’ll update the article accordingly with the info that you’ve provided. Taxi scams are unfortunately common at Manila Airport. Some drivers don’t turn on the meter and then overcharge passengers, or their meters are not accurate at all. The cheaper option nowadays is to book your ride with Grab if you have a sim card. You can also take the airport shuttle at Terminal 3 if the schedule matches your flight arrival time. We hope you still enjoyed your stay in the Philippines!
