The Best Christmas Market Cruises

Avalon Waterways’ holiday-themed Main River sailings kick off in Nuremberg, Germany.

In November and December, the air in Europe becomes scented with gingerbread and mulled wine as the continent’s famous Christmas markets set up shop. Expect scenes brimming with colorful lights, local choir groups performing, and sweets and handmade crafts and ornaments being sold from spruce huts. Often this seasonal show is in the heart of the city, or in a popular town square, and sometimes the events are massive—the famous market in Nuremberg, Germany, for instance, has more than 200 stalls. You can do your holiday shopping all while taking in the celebratory city sights.

One of the best ways to visit these festive fairs is on a river cruise. River cruise lines will deliver you directly to them with their Christmas market cruises—highly popular sailings along the Danube and the Rhine , Germany’s Main River and France’s Seine that include visits to the merry markets. While there may still be some availability on 2019 holiday sailings, your best bet is to get a jumpstart on planning for 2020 as these cruises tend to book far in advance.

Best for exploring historic traditions

Avalon Waterways’ Germany-focused Main River Christmastime itinerary from Nuremberg to Mainz (near Frankfurt) visits Bavarian towns and villages decked out for the holidays. A shipboard lecturer discusses German holiday traditions along the way. Stops include historic Bamberg, where throughout town locals build nativity scenes. An optional excursion visits the town of Rothenburg and the Käthe Wohlfahrt German Christmas shop there, home to a massive collection of traditional German Christmas decorations. Onboard, the ship is embellished with holiday-themed decor, and you can learn how to bake traditional cookies from the region.

Best for Francophiles

Experience Christmastime in Paris and Normandy with Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection , a spirited sailing on France’s Seine River. Included are château visits such as a private cocktail reception with the owners of the 17th-century Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, colorfully decorated for the holiday. You will also experience Christmas traditions in the medieval city of Rouen. At the Cathédrale Notre-Dame in Paris, view the impressive crèche (nativity scene) and hear a choral performance. The square in front of the cathedral hosts a Christmas market with venders selling French crafts, crepes, and roasted chestnuts. Some sailings are designated for families, with special activities for kids age 4 to 17.

Best for an over-the-top holiday experience

Beyond holiday celebrations in places such as Vienna and the historic Bavarian town of Vilshofen, Germany, which hosts a floating Christmas market on the Danube River, Crystal River Cruises’ luxury ships dazzle with their own exaggerated holiday displays. Think life-sized toy soldiers, meticulously decorated Christmas trees, and poinsettia garlands galore. The food, too, is designed to be an extravagant representation of European Christmas traditions. Sailings on the Danube include seasonal activities, such as snowshoe hiking in the Bavarian forest. In medieval Regensburg, Germany, there’s a visit to a Christmas village and market at a former Benedictine monastery that is now an exquisitely restored baroque palace.

Best for families

Adventures by Disney hosts a very merry Christmas celebration on the AmaViola , a vessel Disney’s touring arm charters from river cruise line AmaWaterways . The sailings are on the Danube between Budapest and Vilshofen, with several market experiences along the way. In Vienna, guests experience the impressive Schönbrunn Palace, where the outdoor Christmas market offers music, handicrafts ,and children’s activities. Also in Vienna, guests can go ice skating in the center of the city. The itinerary includes an excursion to Salzburg, Austria, showcasing sights from the iconic movie The Sound of Music , as well as the charming city’s own famed Christmas extravaganza.

Best for revelers

U River Cruises’s Dashing Through the Danube sailings combine visits to Christmas markets with pub crawls, onboard silent disco parties, rooftop yoga, and mixology lessons. In Budapest, you might attend some raves; in Bratislava, Slovakia, check out one of the microbreweries in between searching for handcrafted Bohemian Christmas decorations and toys; and in Passau, Germany, do a torch-lit walk along the river while drinking mulled wine and singing Christmas carols. An optional tour in Regensburg visits the high-tech BMW factory, where you can fantasize about your ultimate holiday gift.

Best for the wellness-minded

For those hoping to burn off some of those holiday calories, AmaWaterways has fitness instructors on its ships running a full roster of fitness classes such as stretching, dance, and cardio training. If the weather allows, you can borrow bikes for exploring the ports, too. The line’s holiday sailings on the Danube and Rhine get you to famed Christmas markets such as the Alsatian delight of Strasbourg, France, and Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt, where resisting the baked goods is particularly difficult in the self-proclaimed “gingerbread capital of the world.”

Best itinerary and excursions

Tour operator Tauck puts an emphasis on beyond-the-norm excursions that are included in its cruise fare. A holiday sailing on the Rhine from Basel, Switzerland, to Cologne, Germany, includes a day trip into the Black Forest and to Baden-Baden, Germany, for the famous spa town’s Christmas market, held in the complex of the belle époque casino there. Witness local bands and choirs perform holiday music and real sheep appear in Baden-Baden’s “living nativity.” From Cologne, there’s a visit to the German town of Aachen to try the special gingerbread they’ve been making there for 600 years.

Best for cultural immersion

On Viking River Cruises’ Christmas market sailings on the Rhine and Danube, guests have the opportunity to learn new traditions both at the festive markets on shore and shipboard. On the ships, you can enjoy holiday cookies and other baked treats, special musical presentations by local performers, tree trimming, and gingerbread and strudel-making demonstrations. There are also hands-on sessions in creating regional crafts such as wreaths and ornaments, plus holiday-themed quizzes in the lounge. While you sail past a parade of holiday lights from your ship’s festooned sundeck, the crew serves mulled wine to keep you warm.

Writing in the planner is a woman's hand in a white sweater. Photo with selective focus, bokeh lights, and atmospheric effects. Gifts and shopping concept for Christmas

Here are some of the expert-approved tips for planning and booking a Christmas market cruise :

  • You should take some time to research different Christmas market cruises before you book one. This will help you to find the right cruise within your budget.
  • While most stalls at Christmas markets accept credit and debit cards, it is still a good idea to bring some cash with you.
  • Do not wait to buy something you like at a Christmas market. If you see something you like, you should buy it right away to avoid disappointment, as these things sell out very quickly.
  • Make sure not to spend all of your money at the first Christmas market you visit. There will be other Christmas markets to visit throughout your trip. So, you should save some of your money for spending at these markets.
  • Christmas markets are usually only open for a few hours each day. This is because the vendors need time to set up and tear down their stalls. You should plan your day carefully so that you have enough time to visit all of the Christmas markets present on your wish list.

Experiencing the Magic: Onboard and Ashore

Other than the Christmas Market visits, the Christmas Market Cruises offer a lot of onboard activities to all its guests. Here are some of the activities you must participate in while onboard your cruise ship:

  • Gather around the Christmas tree with your loved ones and decorate it with accessories, lights, and garlands.
  • Enjoy a delicious and festive Christmas dinner with your fellow passengers. The meal may include traditional Christmas dishes, such as roast turkey, ham, and mashed potatoes, as well as desserts like Christmas pudding and mince pies.
  • Sing traditional Christmas carols to celebrate the holiday season and get into the festive spirit.
  • Test your knowledge of Christmas trivia with a fun and festive quiz.
  • Drinking glühwein or German mulled wine made with red wine, sugar, and spices, and is often served with a slice of orange or lemon.
  • Get into the holiday spirit by baking cakes, cookies, and gingerbread houses.

7 Cruise Lines Offering Festive Holiday Cruises in 2023

Celebrate the festive season on the high seas with these Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year's cruises.

As if never-ending shrimp and beautiful coastlines weren’t enticing enough, cruise lines go all out each winter for holiday celebrations. These special sailings bring cheer to the high seas with seasonal activities, festive decor, and even more delicious treats than usual. ‘Tis the season to indulge, after all.

Whether you’re interested in dashing through the Caribbean Sea with Mickey Mouse on a Disney Christmas cruise or embarking on a lavish and intimate experience aboard a European river cruise , there’s something for every travel style and budget. Here are seven of the best cruise lines for holiday cruises in 2023.

Viking Cruises

Courtesy of Viking

Viking Cruises, a Switzerland-based luxury cruise line , is known for the distinct modern touches it brings to sailings. The brand is known for its river cruises, which offer meticulous service and attention to detail on a fleet of small ships (typically 200 guests or fewer) — and these intimate voyages are extra blissful during the holidays.

Viking offers a number of European Christmas-market cruises that combine culture-centric sightseeing with festive spirit. Onboard you can enjoy live performances, regional specialties, tree trimming, and freshly baked yuletide cookies and cakes. See the City of Light lit up for the season as you glide through Paris on the Seine, or follow a two-day tour of Berlin with a voyage along the Elbe to Prague. If an American holiday is more your style, opt for one of Viking's Mississippi River cruises with highlights like Creole dining in New Orleans and from-the-water views of nearby historic estates all aglow for the season.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line takes magic to an entirely new level during its holiday sailings. The line's Very Merrytime Cruises depart from ports in Florida, California, and Texas and head to destinations ranging from the Bahamas to western Mexico — all with a flurry of holiday festivities along the way. Merrytime ships are transformed with festive decor (including a 24-foot Christmas tree), and offer a range of seasonal activities and entertainment.

Beloved Disney characters dress in holiday attire for meet-and-greets, and Santa Claus makes appearances on most sailings. Cruises visiting Castaway Cay , Disney’s private island, offer even more festive fun, as the Bahamian paradise is decked out for the season with a Christmas tree and faux-snow flurries. The best part? This is all in addition to Disney Cruise Line's plentiful year-round perks .

Norwegian Cruise Line

Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line

With sailings to six different continents, Norwegian Cruise Line gives guests plenty of options for a relaxing holiday, wherever they want to spend it. In addition to Christmas cruises , Norwegian offers New Year, Hanukkah, and even Thanksgiving sailings. On the latter, guests can sit back and relax as someone else prepares an unforgettable turkey dinner. Now that is a reason to be thankful.

Christmas cruises add awe-inspiring decor, live performances, and a slew of onboard activities, like an ugly sweater contest and themed holiday trivia. Whether you want to sip eggnog by the pool or attend an onboard Christmas-carol singalong, Norwegian delivers plenty of reasons to set sail this season.

Princess Cruises

Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Whether you're sailing to sunny Sydney or the Mexican Riviera, Princess Cruises promises a forecast that includes a daily snowfall. Don’t worry — these flurries aren't real, but they have become a staple of the line's holiday celebrations.

After you’ve gotten in the spirit with your in-room virtual yule log, mingle with Santa Claus or be enchanted with holiday classics performed by the Yuletide Carolers. Guests can design keepsake ornaments or compete in a gingerbread house-making contest, while younger passengers can attend their very own holiday parties at the onboard youth centers.

The line's Hanukkah sailings bring extra fun like menorah-lighting ceremonies, festive decor, themed crafts, and a reading of "Sammy Spider’s First Hanukkah." And if New Year's is your favorite winter holiday, Princess has cruises for that too, with special offerings including champagne-fueled New Year's Eve parties and big-screen telecasts of all the college football games happening on New Year's Day.

Adventures by Disney River Cruises

River cruises may have a reputation of appealing to older travelers, but people of all ages are discovering they're a great way to travel. Adventures by Disney offers a range of family-friendly river cruises thanks to a partnership with AmaWaterways, and in the wintertime, three of their itineraries focus on Europe's historic Christmas markets . On these journeys, you'll glide along the Danube or Rhine rivers, making stops in countries like Germany, Austria, and France. Choose a Rhine voyage to see the canals of Amsterdam lit up for the holidays or a Danube trip featuring a shore excursion to a festive outdoor ice-skating rink in the heart of Vienna. No matter which itinerary you select, all meals are included, and you can partake in onboard activities such as gingerbread cookie decorating and a mulled wine tasting.

Courtesy of Cunard Line

A sophisticated British cruise line, Cunard takes an elevated approach to the holidays. Here, champagne is served in elegant crystal, and afternoon tea is accompanied by stollen and other traditional European Christmas cakes. Soak up the splendor of the onboard gingerbread village or sip eggnog as you enjoy deckside traditions like Christmas carolers, mince pies, and visits from Santa.

After you gawk at the stunning Christmas tree in the Grand Lobby, you can visit the onboard luxury shops (like Liberty of London, Garrard jewelers, and more) to pick up last-minute gifts for your loved ones. Itineraries include the line's famous transatlantic crossings on the Queen Mary 2 in addition to other regional journeys across the globe, from Australia and New Zealand to the Caribbean and the Canary Islands.

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

From the moment you step aboard one of the line's winter cruises, Royal Caribbean kicks the holidays into overdrive. Every December sailing comes with Christmas and Hanukkah programming built in, so you can enjoy Royal Caribbean's unique brand of holiday cheer on more than 650 itineraries around the world. These voyages get the entire family involved with a range of activities, like gingerbread decorating classes and an ugly sweater party. There are special Christmas menus and a cookies-and-milk corner, plus holiday classics shown on the poolside movie screen.

The traditional lighting of the ship’s massive tree has become a mainstay of the celebrations, while many can’t get enough of the annual holiday-themed version of their famous Bottomless Galley Brunch.  Have fun and know you’re doing good by participating in a special walk for polar bears on the ship’s deck in support of the World Wildlife Fund’s Arctic program.
