English-speaking Travel Agencies in Japan

Exploring new cultures and nations can easily pique one's interest, but without a guide who understands what you're looking for, planning what to do can be a nightmare, which is why we strongly advise working with one of Japan's many English-friendly travel agencies.

While travel companies have mostly fallen out of favor in the West, many Japanese people still rely on them to plan their trips. Because so many people are vying for a piece of the pie, you, the traveler, have a better chance of saving money and having the kind of holiday that only a cultural insider can provide.

Popular Locations to Visit in Japan

local travel agency in japan

Before you hire an agent, however, it’s good to have a basic idea of where you would like to go. Below are some of the most popular destinations to help you narrow down your travel plans.

You could easily spend your entire trip exploring Tokyo and still find yourself wanting to see more. It offers something for everyone from sports and entertainment, to art, culture, history, cuisine, and shopping.

Kyoto was once the medieval capital of Japan. Much of the old city is still preserved, making it a top destination for Japanophiles hoping for a peek into the country’s feudal past. You can still fully immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture by visiting a variety of shrines, temples, and shop-lined alleys.

Distance from Tokyo: 135 minutes by bullet train

Nikko , located to the north of Tokyo, is home to the famous Toshogu shrine. This shrine was dedicated to the Tokugawa shogunate and is considered one of the most beautiful and ornate shrines in all of Japan. The surrounding forest includes an impressive set of waterfalls, as well as some wonderful onsen , or natural hot springs.

Distance from Tokyo: 140 minutes by limited express train

Kamakura is a leisurely day trip from Tokyo and full of shrines and castles. This area was the capital of Japan during the Kamakura period. It offers a great combination of historical sites and hiking opportunities. Go just a little farther out to the nearby island of Enoshima for a fun day at the beach — a spot so relaxing you won’t believe Shinjuku is less than two hours away.

Distance from Tokyo: 60 minutes by local train

Mt. Fuji, Japan’s iconic volcano, is unmistakable. The official climbing season is from May to October. It’s recommended that you only attempt the ascent during this period. There are many official groups with which you can make the ascent, so only seasoned climbers should try to go up solo.

Distance from Tokyo: 170 minutes by express and local trains

Popular Seasonal Activities in Japan

local travel agency in japan

There’s something for nearly every outdoor interest when it comes to touring Japan, but there are certain areas and activities that are particularly worth exploring depending on the season.

The most important event of spring is hanami, a fleeting week where all of the cherry blossoms bloom simultaneously in a blaze of soft pink. While it’s possible to guess which week will be blessed with the event each year, there are often changes in weather that result in the window changing, so we recommend casting your net wide for a longer stay to ensure that you get the chance to experience a picnic beneath a radiant canopy of flowers.

Summer is the typical season for international tourists, but be warned: major metropolises like Tokyo and Osaka get uncomfortably hot and humid. That being said, Japan has keeping cool down to an art form, and the most popular outdoor activities include summer festivals boasting music, singing, and drums that you will hear deep into the night.

There are also many opportunities to enjoy massive firework festivals throughout the season in Tokyo, Osaka, and other major cities. If your trip happens to line up with one of these events, be sure not to miss it.

The fall foliage is truly something to behold throughout Japan. The displays across the mountains rival any in the world. Especially against the backdrop of so many ancient temples and shrines, you can begin to understand why the Japanese hold nature sacred. With temperatures cooling, this is an ideal time to come to Japan.

Winter is perhaps the least popular of the seasons, unless you head north of Tokyo. Nagano and Niseko’s alpine slopes covered in powder snow are worth a visit at least once in your life if you’re an avid skier. After a full day’s activities, it’s common to find yourself sitting in front of a steaming communal hotpot or a bowl of intensely flavorful ramen. This is also a popular season to indulge in a hot spring vacation.

Arriving in Japan

The final question is where you will be flying into Japan: Haneda or Narita. Almost all international travel into Japan goes through these two major hubs, both located near Tokyo. While Narita is larger, it’s also further out of the way in Tokyo’s neighboring prefecture of Chiba. Haneda, on the other hand, is right in Tokyo.

Both airports have had significant facelifts in the last few years, and right now it’s not that difficult to travel into Tokyo from either one. If you would like more information, check out our full guides to traveling from Narita and Haneda into Tokyo

Our tour guide was exceptional—knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about sharing the rich history and culture of Japan. They tailored the tour to our interests, providing fascinating insights and hidden gems that we would never have discovered on our own.
The tour guide Mary provided a wonderful job explaining Japan's history and culture to us. I was a single traveler among the 23 members, a perfect group size for a good experience. Hotels were very nice with good amenities. Highly recommended this tour to any first time visitor to Japan.

We want to thank Tour Radar for making this trip so seamless. Every inquiry was answered quickly and all details of the trip were thoroughly explained and easy to access. This is our second tour using them and we will continue to seek out adventures on their web site in future.
Really enjoyed trip. Guide Jiro Hattori was very organized and helpful. Good variety of rural, cultural and urban activities.

This tour is very expensive for what you actually get, as nearly all of the travel is on public transport which is very time consuming. So much time was taken up on public transport that there was not enough time to explore the places we visited.
The accommodations were good the food was excellent and the tour was exactly what I wanted it was an active tour that we spent most of our time out doors and in smaller cities and towns Our tour guide Toshi was excellent

Very happy with the service. Was well organised and got what was expected.
As a solo traveller, it was nice to have activities planned but also free time to explore the places that you wanted to. The culture and history was so vibrant and there is plenty to see and do everywhere. The group was amazing and as a guide, Dale went above and beyond to ensure we had the best experience possible. His knowledge of everything Japanese ensured we not only got to see all the culture, but also learnt about to. Don’t think this trip would have been the same if he wasn’t our guide. Highly recommend this tour!

The tour organizer has very, very poor communication, planning and organizational skills. The final itinerary was sent 2weeks before the start of the actual trip, I have to remind them by email to send it to us asap as they promised it will be sent a month before the actual trip. We where told initially that they will arrange our airport transfer and have told them we will be arriving two days before the actual tour, but after days before we've been told that we have to do it ourselves. The two hotel from original itinerary was changed on the final one provided so it caused some confusion on our side. Their representative met with us on the first day of the tour to sort out our JR. Pass and it took 2hours of our precious time to do this, we almost missed the pre-booked museum that day. Their hotel choices where below average, first one is in Ikeburo with bfast included but only seaweed soup and toast where given, again we have to travel to Shinjuku station to get the train to Hakone (very inconvenient), they could just chosen a hotel in Shinjuku instead. In the morning next we arrived in Hakone, we supposed to drop off our luggage at the next hotel to free our hands to roam around the area and found that it was closed and nobody around to asked for information so we have to dragged our luggage back to the station to put them in the locker. I have contacted their representative but he even asked me the name of the hotel (unbelievable, how could he not know all this details). They replied around 2.30ish pm and was told it was unmanned and we where given a PIN number to access, again they should have known this important details and informed us even the day/night before the trip. The next day we travelled again to Kyoto, to avoid the hassle of dropping off our luggage palarva we've decided to use the coin lockers at the station. It was late in the afternoon when we arrived at the hotel the receptionist asked us to pay City Tax 1200yen for 3nights stay, this again we where unaware of. I messaged the representative and to the people on the WhatsApp group and question about this city tax, they said they will refund me with the money so no choice I have paid.Again breakfast was included but only varieties of bread available and some butter and jams and coffee or water. Unsatisfied again. On arrival at Hiroshima after 3days this is where the confusion happens as the name of the hotel was different on the final itinerary they've sent us (this was our mistake we owned this as we didn't checked the final itinerary). We've only stayed at the Flex hotel (supposed to be two nights) for a night as wanting to have more time in Osaka instead (paid privately for one night
I recently took a trip to Japan and visited Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Osaka, and I can confidently say it was one of the best travel experiences I've ever had! The tours were fantastic and provided great insights into each city's culture and history. The transportation was also very reliable, making it easy to get around from one city to another. The accommodations were top-notch, with comfortable rooms and excellent service. I highly recommend booking a trip to Japan with Bamba and experiencing all that it has to offer!

Much improved. I have been to Japan twice now both times with Discovi and this was by far the best trip I could have imagined. There are new guides all local Japanese every single one of them is amazing (Shinya was exceptional!) and a brand new Hotel not a hostal like before but even the hostal option is better this time. But the hotel has breakfast and it was AMAZING a mix of Japanese and American food. Great start to the day. And the PUB CRAWL!! Crazy night so much fun, thanks Discovi!
I expected this to be more touristy but I WAS SO SHOCKED This is a local tour! I felt like we had the nicest guides all Japanese and they knew so many little spots that you would never find yourself! Take this tour if you want to see the real Japan

The tour was excellent, especially the English guider, Louis, from Kyoto until end of my tour. However, the English guider from Tokyo to Kyoto was weak and the Spanish Guider had to take care of both groups.
On our first trip to Japan we hope we get on overview to the Japanese country and landscape . Unfortunately the tour running from one overcrowded tourist hot spot to the next. Every morning the to large group of 40 people was reassembled and got a new guide. is was The tour with more stressful than enjoyable. Some of the guides have a hard to understand dialect when speaking English The explanation to the place of interest comes in 3 minutes English and 15 minutes Spain. Never again

I was traveling with my spouse, tween, and 70+ year-old parents. We visited during the busy cherry blossom season. We were lucky as we arrived during the peak of this season and cherry blossoms were abundant. It was also quite crowded, so I appreciated my family having our own guide (versus being part of a bigger tour group). Also, it was nice to be picked up at the airport so that we didn't have to find our way around a foreign country upon arrival. I think the value was good considering it included the hotel, entrance fees to places visited, and public transportation fares. It was nice not to have to worry about the logistics of getting from one place to another in a foreign country. Our online tour consultant was very responsive and helpful. Also, the guides were knowledgeable, kind, and accommodating. The biggest challenge is that the days involved quite a bit of walking, which was difficult for my elderly parents. If I convince them to go on another trip, I would add in more leisurely days. Maybe that's my fault for not asking for some lighter days. I'm a bit torn because as a traveler, you do want to make the most of each day you are there to visit all the beautiful sites; but, it can also be exhausting. This also meant having to lug luggage around various trains to the various destinations. We stayed in four different hotels as we traveled across Japan. It was a packed itinerary; we were able to see a lot in a short amount of time. Over the course of five days, we visited Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Nara, Kyoto, Hiroshima, & Miyajima Island. Overall, an excellent trip that provided a snapshot of Japan. I would rate it four and a half stars if I could (but only whole stars were allowed). I recommend it for most families (including those with little ones and elderly); I would just add more rest days/free time (or fewer site visits per day), especially if you have members in your party that are young or elderly. Also, if you have members that have mobility issues (such as those in a wheelchair), I would work with the tour consultant as there were places that would be difficult to access. My consultant was great; I just don't think I took advantage of having chosen a “private, tailor-made" tour as much as I should have. I relied and trusted the recommendations. To be clear, their recommendations were all top notch, I just should have taken my family's (which included elderly parents) abilities more into account and been more vocal with what would be best to accommodate my specific family's needs.
Excellent customer service. Very efficient and responsive. Guides were informative. Thank you. I’ll be using your travel again. Highly recommend.

The trip itinerary was a blast! It showcased so many amazing locations and activities that Japan has to offer while giving you a good chunk of free time to explore on your own if you'd like. Zoe Belcher was an amazing guide always keeping things running smoothly on time with a smile on her face and always ready to snap a picture to capture the memories of the trip forever. Highly recommend the Japan trip and Zoe as a tour guide!
The trip and our group leader were great! Interesting sites and activities. Meg has helped me with my vegan diet in japan, because it's not been that easy in that country like in germany. We had a lot of fun!

First tour guide for the first 8 days was great, second tour guide tried hard and seemed lovely as a person, but she was disorganized, oblivious of who was or wasn’t following her, was unaware of where she was going at times, and just didn’t seem like she knew how to do the job. I’m not the only one who felt that way. Your pre trip support was excellent and accommodating, but having taken a number of tours with other organizations, Rick steve’s in Europe, you charge a lot when offering very little. I will not recommend your tour group to anyone, and will most likely discourage others from taking one.

She was knowledgeable, helpful, funny, kind and incredibly hardworking. I can't speak too highly of her. The food and accommodation surpassed my expectations as did the way the s company structured the tour. I highly recommend the Japan tour with Eriko.
This tour was fantastic. The tour owners are foodies so we were told and it showed. The tour itself was terrific and well organized but on top of that the restaurant and other food choices etc. were just stellar.

Our only gripe was the long bus trips involved at the beginning and end of each day. Kohei, our guide, was outstanding. He let us experience many aspects of Japanese culture, and he became as much a friend as a guide.
My husband and I went on the World Expiditions Back Roads of Japan Tour last year, and were extremely disappointed in the quality of guide provided. The guide had never done the tour, had never even been to half the places on the itinerary and was a complete loose cannon, on two occasions taking elicit drugs and drinking to the point of being unable to function. When the entire tour group sent complaints following the completion of the tour, World Expeditions were elusive and largely uncommunicative, and offered us all an insulting refund of about 12% of our tour cost. Needless to say, we will not be taking or recommending World Expeditions tours in the future.

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!
Excellent trip with a full itinerary, make sure that you are fit as there is a lot of walking involved and jumping on and off public transport which can be exciting. Exciting and delicious food, fascinating people, customs history and traditions.Totally enjoyed the trip!! Highly recommended.

Tokyo Tour Guide - Yasuro C.

Hello, my name is Yasuro (Mr). I was born and brought up in Kansai, graduated from a univ in Kobe city, after moved into Kanto, 30 years in Tokyo, 2.5 years in Nagoya city, 7.5 years abroad (KL & S'pore) as a rep of a construction company and I got the National Guide Certificate in 2011. My hobbies are making Haiku poems, singing various songs (voice-training for 18 years), playing the folk-guitar, trekking in mountains like Takao and Okutama in the West of Tokyo, visiting museums like in Ueno Park and travelling around Japan to make Haiku poems. Thank you for your attention.

Kanagawa Tour Guide - Kaneo U.

I’m so excited to have a chance to show you around my favorite spots in Kanagawa prefecture. I was born in Kanagawa. I spent my whole school life, including university, here in Kanagawa. I worked as a high school English teacher here for 40 years. I love Kanagawa so much. We have many interesting tourist spots, like Hakone, Kamakura, Enoshima and Yokohama. I got my tour guide license in English in 2009. I am still an English teacher. To give an interesting and impressive lesson to young high school students, I’ve learnt and gathered many kinds of information. I also have a license to teach social studies, so I have a wide range of knowledge about Japanese culture and history. I’m sure to provide you an interesting tour.

Yokohama Tour Guide - Haruo T.

I live in Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture. I have a license to teach in high schools and was admitted to the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language in the University of Birmingham. Until 2015 I had been teaching English at public high schools in Kanagawa for 37 years. During that time, I had some experience of guiding students from overseas through sister-school relationship around Tokyo and Kanagawa. Therefore, I had good command of English with the TOEIC score of 935. As for a tour guide experience I earned the certificate of National Government Licensed Guide-Interpreter in English and since then I have guided tourists to the popular sites around Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura and Yokosuka. My guiding focuses on introducing not only Japanese historical and cultural backgrounds but also giving tourists some tips to travel Japan only by themselves, such as how to use trains and subways, find good restaurants, reserve tickets, buy survenier, and speak basic Japanese. In addition, my tour includes opportunities to experience Japanese culture like Zen meditation, ninja performance, visiting anime's location sites based on tourists' request. Besides, by means of my hobbies of writing English Haiku and Waka (traditional Japanese poems) and performing Rakugo (traditional Japanese funny story telling) in English, I can surely entertain tourists during the tour. My moto as a tour guide is let the tourists have a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Japan with my profound, intelligible and interestiog guiding.

Shiga Tour Guide - Koichi W.

Hi! I'm Koichi. I was born in Osaka, I studied in Kyoto when I was a university student. Now I live in Shiga next to Kyoto. I am a national government licensed tour guide. I have been guiding about 160 groups over the past twelve months. I usually guide my customers mainly in Kansai region including Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Kobe and Shiga by public transportation systems. Well, I am curious about Japanese history, especially the history of Japan's ancient times since I was raised next to the world biggest mausoleum of the ancient Emperor called "Nintoku" in Sakai city Osaka which has just become one of the world cultural heritage sites. I dug out some ancient earthen ware vessels around there when I was a primary school student like the adventure archaeologist “Indiana Jones" (It’s our secret!!). That was my hobby. Now, one of my hobbies is outdoor activities such as mountaineering, kayaking, skiing and others. So I would like to take you to some good places where you can enjoy Japanese unique nature. I love to guide foreign visitors from all over the world. I think it is my calling or heavenly given job. Let's go and enjoy together! Hi. my name is yoshihisa. call me "yoshie", please. it means good or o.k. in japanese. i live in joyo city, kyoto prefecture, located just in between kyoto and nara. i was born and raised in iga, mie prefecture. iga is a birthplace of ninja and a renowned haiku poet, matsuo basho. i might be a descendant of ninja. i aim at becoming a linguistic ninja, following a part of basho's lifestyle with the incorporation of seasonal changes into my tours. in addition to visiting famous temples and shrines, i invite you to lesser-known places of historic interest. once in a month i go hiking or mountain climbing with some friends mainly in mountains surrounding kyoto and nara basins. recently i have got intrigued by the charms of buddhist statues, which are manifestations of people's wishes and prayers. i also like izakaya (japanese-style taverns) hopping, tasting delicious dishes and locally brewed sake at reasonable prices. especially i like communicating with people from home and abroad, talking face to face. some of the above-mentioned elements are included in my walking tours. i hope you will discover new aspects of cultural and natural beauty in kansai area through one of my tours which you could never gain otherwise. one of my favorite phrases that come from zen buddhism is ichigo ichie or this meeting-but only once in a lifetime. my interpretation goes this way: this place and this moment never cross again. each and every good encounter, however, lingers on like the sound of a temple bell. won't you explore a deeper world of japanese culture in kyoto, nara and osaka with me                                                                                                                                  , popular osaka tour guides, popular kamakura tour guides.

Hello, everyone my name is yukihiro(行博), call me "hero". i'm eager to introduce this unique country, japan to foreign guests. i am not a professional interpreter. i have retired from japan ground self-defense force(jgsdf=japanese army) on march 2018. i have spent most of my career as a army nco(non-commissioned officer) . my job experiences are only in the military, but there are variety of specialties, so i didn't feel boredom. i lived in many places all over japan, such as hokkaido 10years, chiba 15years, okinawa 8years and more places. i am working for the half of month as a tour-conductor in okinawa japan. rest of month, i live in nagasaki prefecture, and work as a triple lights interpreter tour guide. 我一邊在沖繩當旅遊服務員大概半個月,一邊在九州長崎當triple lights的翻譯導游工作剩餘的月。 i am registered as a okinawa prefectural interpreter tour guide (english & chinese), but don't have a whole japan area certification. so i am brushing my skill up to get it. 我登記了沖繩縣的地域翻譯導遊(英/中文),可是沒有全國的。所以為了獲得全國導遊資格,我正在繼續學外語。 i speak english, chinese (simplify & traditional) , no problem to guide you, not like a native though. 我會說英語和中文(簡/繁),作為您的導游沒問題,沒有母語的人那麼好。                                                                                                                                  .

Fukuoka Tour Guide - Tadashi M.

Hello! My name is Tadashi. I was born and raised in Fukuoka and I've lived here all my life. I used to work for a local bank where I was mainly involved in export, import, and foreign exchange, etc. Afterwards I joined a university where I taught international economics and foreign trade for five years. I'm happy to arrange your tour plans according to your requests and help you to write your own unique story with me. If you're coming to Fukuoka for the first time, I recommend Tochoji Temple, Kushida Shrine and Fukuoka Castle Ruins where you can get feel for Japanese culture and history. Thirty minutes away from the center by train is Dazaifu. There you can enjoy a very famous shrine, Dazaifu Tenmangu, known as the home of " the god of literature or calligraphy." and Kyushu National Museum. Fukuoka is also a mecca for shopping and food. If you're coming to Fukuoka again, I recommend that you try local food, for example, Hakata Ramen-noodles in pork broth and locally caught fish. I can also take you to a traditional Japanese shopping arcade, Kawabata Shotengai. If you would like to get out of the city, we could go to Yanagawa, a town of canals, which is a one hour ride from the city center. You can try boat tours enjoying the leisurely view of the historic buildings and try Steamed Eel. Fukuoka travel tip: if you arrive in Fukuoka by JR, make sure to get off at "Hakata Station." Sorry, there's no "Fukuoka Station." on JR lines. Hakata is an old name for Fukuoka and your destination. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi my name is yasuhiko ikeda, please call me "yasu", meaning "hello" in greek. after i worked in an electric company in japan, i became a professional guide to introduce my town, my country. after covid-19, tourism is back you may want to have more private experiences like no other people had before. then, my home, fukuoka, has a lot to show you around. so many nice places, cultures, and nice local people with delicious local foods. i like sports, climbing, running etc. i also like to visit temples and shrines. i am also an active backpacker, (have been to 50+ countries mostly in asia and europe over 30 years) so, i suppose i know well about where you would like to visit. :) i have never lived outside of japan, however, you may also feel better that my speaking english is not typical japanese "flat" intonation. where you would like to go, i will be there with you i am looking forward to inquiry. -yasu                                                                                                                                  , popular gifu tour guides.

Gifu Tour Guide - Akiko W.

Hello! My name is Akiko from Gifu prefecture. I am a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter. I like going out with my family, talking with my friends over coffee at a cozy cafe, reading books, baking bread and cake when I have time. I passed the national tour guide test in 2017 and have worked as a guide since then. I have guided in Gifu city, Seki city, Takayama city, Shirakawago , Mino city and Nagoya city. I have lived in Gifu for more than forty years. Gifu prefecture is rich in nature so you can enjoy the rural atmosphere. Gifu city has a beautiful river 'Nagara river' and Mt.Kinka which has Gifu castle on the top. You can go up the mountain on foot or use a ropeway. The view from Gifu castle is so fantastic. At the foot of the mountain , there are many places to visit such as parks, a temple having a big image of Buddha, and a street preserving the historic atmosphere. At Nagara River, you can enjoy seeing a traditional way of fishing ‘cormorant fishing’ which is thought to have started 1300 years ago. Many cafes have unique service called 'morning service' in Gifu along with Aichi In the morning (until about ten thirty or eleven) when you order a cup of tea or coffee, they serve toast and salad ! Near Gifu park , you can find a nice Japanese style cafe where you enjoy good coffee and seeing a Japanese style garden. Seki city is a small city but so famous for its cutlery. At Japanese sword museum in Seki, you can see authentic Japanese swords! Mino city next to Seki city is well known for its hand made Japanese paper 'Hon minoshi' designated as intangible cultural asset by UNESCO . Until recently it was not easy to guide guests because of COVID-19 pandemic; however the situation is getting better. Some strict rules about COVID-19 have been lifted. Please visit Gifu. I am looking forward to seeing you. Please feel free to ask me when you need information about Gifu. Thank you for reading my introduction.

Hakone One-day Tour for Beryn

“ The Hakone Open Air Museum is fabulous! ”

My husband and I recently spent four days touring in Japan with Shoji.   He patiently and expertly steered us through a very confusing combination of multiple subways rides, regular trains, tramways and cable cars, as required each day, including obtaining the requisite tickets.  He is knowledgeable about a great many different areas of Japan, so he was able to guide us to Nikko, Hakone, and Kamakura - as well as multiple locations within the metro-Tokyo area.  It was a pleasure to be able to explore with the same well-educated guide for all four days, and his English fluency was perfect for us as we speak no Japanese.

Tokyo Four Hour Tour Customized for You

“ Wonderful tailored tour with Chiaki ”

We had the most wonderful time with Chiaki! Her communication before, during and after the tour were timely and informative. She made several suggestions on where to go which worked out perfectly. She will tailor the trip to your needs. She offered a lot of background and history on the sites we visited. She took us to unique vantage points, knew the shortest way to get to sites. We wanted to learn the subway and train system better and she took us on several different routes which was extremely helpful. She is quiet and very calm, we went to a garden and not only walked around but sat for awhile enjoying the scenery, which was a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of the temples and trains. I highly recommend Chiaki and plan to use her services next time we come to Tokyo!

I booked this short tour for elderly my parents. They really enjoyed the tour with Otani san. Somehow they were able to communicate. Thank you Woo for making this arrangement. I’m glad they have a great time despite the not so nice weather.

Using a Travel Agency to Go to Japan: The Pros & Cons

local travel agency in japan

Travel agents can help to relieve some trip-planning stress—but working with a travel agent isn’t always the best way to discover all the incredible things to do in Japan .

Here, we look closely at the pros and cons of using a travel agency to go to Japan, measured by price, experience, personalization, safety, availability, & authenticity.

  • Personalization
  • Availability
  • Authenticity

Go where the locals go

Pros:  Travel agencies are in contact with airlines, hotels, and tour groups, so they’re (theoretically) able to get you discounted rates and recommend things to do in Japan within any budget .

This comes in handy when you’re looking for the best things to do in Tokyo , for instance. An agent can help you avoid racking up a big bill doing touristy stuff.

Cons: Two things here—hidden fees and commissions. Hidden fees are additional costs that pop up with travel agents, which include travel insurance and booking fees for lodging, airfare, and transportation.

Travel agents make commissions for pointing tourists toward certain businesses, making it difficult to determine if you’re actually getting a good deal on… anything. Ideally, trip planners who aren’t paid commission are the way to go here—especially if they can also help you budget your itinerary.

The best Japan itineraries should be organized well in advance (3-4 months ahead of your travel dates) to avoid expensive airfare or lodging costs.

#2: Experience

Experience Japan Travel Agency

Pros:  Travel agents are known for their experience with trip planning—in theory, they can recommend Japan must-dos that otherwise might go overlooked.

Cons: Most travel agents rarely travel to Japan , and even fewer have actually lived there themselves. Experience with planning can’t replace local knowledge of Japanese culture, language, and customs. When you have a local plan your trip , t hey can share their experience and personalized recs—as well as point you toward hidden gems in Tokyo , Osaka, Kyoto, and beyond.

Your phone might not work the same in Japan—read more about that HERE . When you work with a local to design your trip , you get a personalized, offline map pre-loaded with activities that fit your interests and budgets.

#3: personalization.

Personalization Japan Travel Agency

Pros:  Generally, travel agencies offer degrees of trip personalization, allowing you to choose from lists of various day trips, lodgings, or guided tours. But since agents  work on commission, travelers are often given a relatively short list of companies and connections—ones their agents have arrangements with.

Cons: Because you’re effectively choosing from pre-approved travel options, you won’t find much room for personalization with travel agents. Also, if a travel agent works with a high volume of clients, you’re more likely to visit the same Japan highlights as everyone else. If you really want to customize your Japan experience , travel agencies may not be the best fit for you.

Safety Japan Travel Agency

Pros: Travel agents have connections to Japanese tour guides, businesses, and airlines. For this reason, some visitors reach out to travel agents for info on Japan travel safety , particularly if those visitors are going to Japan for the first time and want input from someone who knows Japan well.

Cons: Japan is one of the safest countries in the world , so there’s really no need to spend extra money on a travel agent for safety’s sake. Even the must-dos in Tokyo are in well-known areas that are safe for foreign tourists. When you travel responsibly and exercise common sense, you’ll be just fine exploring Japan solo or with friends.

#5: Availability

Availability Japan Travel Agency

Pros: Travel agents make themselves available for questions during the planning process. They’ll want to cover your Japan FAQs before you embark to make sure the trip goes smoothly.

Cons: When you get to Japan, getting in touch with your travel agent becomes increasingly difficult, especially if they’re working from the U.S. When you work with a local to plan your trip , they're more accessible. They're in your time zone—and can give  Japan travel tips on short notice.

#6: Authenticity

Authenticity Japan Travel Agency

Pros: If an agent specializes in Japan travel, they’ll know their stuff when it comes to the best things to do in Japan .

Cons: Nothing can really replace local knowledge . If the agent doesn’t live in Japan, they’ll plan your trip around the standard places to visit, without the hidden gems that make a Japan truly amazing. You’re less likely to get to Japan’s off-the-beaten-path spots or to meet new people aside from other tourists.

Sierra, recent ViaHero traveler to Portugal

Conclusion: Have a local plan your trip instead.

Have a local plan your trip Japan Travel Agency

If you want to see Japan like a local —not a tourist—work with one to plan your trip. Locals can create a unique itinerary customized to your interests and budget.

Whether you’re traveling for  2 weeks in Japan or keeping it short and sweet with 3 days in Tokyo , a local can point you toward Japan’s unmissable highlights and incredible hidden gems. Plus, they'll be available with phone support in case you run into issues during your trip.

Welcome to traveling Japan like a local.

Japan visitors exceed 3 million for second straight month, tourism agency says

Tourists and locals stroll along Tokyo's Ginza shopping district where some roads are closed off for pedestrians due to the national holiday on April 29.

Japan welcomed more than 3 million visitors for a second straight month in April, official data showed on Wednesday, setting the stage for a potential record year for tourism.

Arrivals in April were up 56% from the prior year and 4% higher than in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic shut global borders. Visitors from France, Italy and the Middle East rose to their highest for any single month in April.

The yen's slide to a 34-year low has made Japan a bargain destination for foreign visitors, with arrivals set to blow past the annual record of 31.9 million seen in 2019.

While the surge in arrivals is good news for Japan's economy, it has caused friction with locals. Complaints of litter and illegal parking caused local officials to erect a barrier this month to block a popular photo spot of Japan's iconic Mount Fuji.

Trail restrictions and a new ¥2,000 ($12.79) fee will go into effect for Mount Fuji climbers this summer after a rise in pollution and accidents during last year's hiking season.

Visitors from mainland China, Japan's biggest tourist market before the pandemic, exceeded 500,000 in April for the first time since January 2020 but were still 27% below the level in 2019.
