Discover flourishing patches of trillium in the spring or take in Northern Michigan's iconic autumn colors. This region has some of the best terrain in North America. Just come dressed to get dusty and dirty. We provide helmets, goggles and bandanas. ATV trips are very popular and advanced reservations are recommended. In order to keep this a small group experience, we limit the number of vehicles for each tour. There are 2-3 departures daily depending on the time of year. DOIN' OFF-ROAD TOURS RIGHT SINCE 2014

Big bear off-road experience has been servicing the valley for over two decades..

The original experience started with Designated Wakesports in 2004. Desi (owner/operator) had a passion for wakeboarding and boating here on beautiful Big Bear Lake. He wanted to provide an experience that gives guests the same thrill of boating in a high-performance tournament tow boat with one of our professional captains. He also wanted guests to be able to experience the lake at their leisure, so in 2009 Designated Wakesports started providing Sea-Doo rentals. We quickly became one of the top-rated Sea-Doo rental companies on the West Coast. In 2014 Big Bear Off-Road Experience was established. Desi had a passion for off-roading on the world-famous local trails and wanted guests visiting Big Bear to have the opportunity to enjoy the same experiences. Desi started Big Bear Jeep Experience with a small fleet of jeeps in 2014. This experience is one of a kind, putting our guests in the driver seat of one of our customized jeeps while they follow our professional guides in a convoy of jeeps as the guide narrates the entire experience via 2-way radio. This unique driving experience quickly became the #1 rated off-road driving experience in the country. In 2020 BBORE partnered with BRP and added the UTV experience to the list of experiences provided. Over the years, guests request a vehicle capable of taking them and their group into the backcountry, but they didn’t want to drive. Desi listened, and after a long year of custom fabrication, TourZilla was born. TourZilla is the biggest and baddest off-road safari vehicle ever created! TourZilla was designed and built to hold 11 passengers safely and bring them to the backcountry. One of our TourZilla handlers (i.e. guides) will drive TourZilla and narrate the entire experience. All you and your group have to do is sit back and enjoy the thrill of a lifetime as TourZilla conquerors anything the trail has in store!

That's not all we have to offer

Are there age requirements to drive or be a passenger?

Minimum age to rent and drive is 26 with a valid driver’s license. However, licensed drivers between 18 to 25 years old are allowed to drive only if they are accompanied by their parent in the same vehicle at the same time (no exceptions).

In order to be a passenger you must be able to sit in the seat, with your feet flat on the floor, back against the seat and your hands firmly on the hand hold.  While we do not enforce a strict height requirement, typically if an individual is about 54 inches tall, they will fit and be able to ride. Minors must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian. All participants are required to wear a helmet with goggles (helmet and goggles provided to borrower during your rental period) and wear closed-toe shoes at all times while in the vehicle. Happy Trails Rental reserves the right to refuse service to anyone, even those meeting the qualifications above, based on our sole discretion.

What is the difference between Self-Guided GPS Tour Rentals and Private Guided Tours?

Self-Guided GPS Tour options are ideal for customers who want to use the aid of our sophisticated GPS technology and follow pre-planned routes to exciting destinations. Self-Guided GPS Tours are perfect for the novice rider who wants to enjoy their riding experience at their own pace to allow time to stop and take in the beautiful scenery. Book directly on-line at our website by selecting the “Book Now” button.

Private Guided Tours are also available if you want to play follow-the-leader on your trail adventure and experience the Mojave desert in a unique way with an expert trail guide. We offer both day tours and special Sunset and Stargazing tours. Call us for pricing and reservations.

Are you allowed to camp in Johnson Valley?

Primitive camping is allowed anywhere within the boundaries of the Johnson Valley OHV Area, except on private property and established dirt roads. There are also a few vault bathrooms located on Anderson Dry Lake and on the north side of Cougar Buttes. Responsible camp fires are allowed, however do not burn wood with nails (pallets prohibited). The burning of potentially hazardous materials e.g. (but not limited to) gas, oil, plastic and magnesium is strictly prohibited. Please avoid building new fire rings. Federally protected desert tortoises are located in the OHV area so please be vigilant to stay away from these protected tortoises. 12 Best Big Bear Off Road Trails: California

By: Author Kris Peter

Posted on Published: November 4, 2020  - Last updated: November 24, 2023

Categories Off-Road Trails , Trails

Situated in San Bernardino National Forest, surrounded by the majestic mountains and views over the lake, there’s no better place to ride your ATV or Jeep than at Big Bear Lake. It has some of the best off-road riding you’ll find in Southern California, all in a resort that caters to all generations and types of rider. What are the best Big Bear off road trails then?

From encountering wildlife to losing yourself on technical trails or wrestling with mud and boulders, there’s a bit of everything in Big Bear. Here are the top trails to try:

  • Gold Mountain Trail
  • Burns and Rattlesnake Canyons Trail
  • Big Pine Flat Trail
  • Dishpan Springs Trail
  • Gold Fever Trail
  • Knickerbocker
  • Van Dusen Canyon
  • Sand Canyon
  • Delamar Mountain Road
  • Butler Peak
  • Coyote Trail

These are just a few – there is so much more to explore in your Jeep, ATV, or OHV around Big Bear Lake. If you want to check off all the Forest Service marked routes, you can visit the OHV Trail Riding Guide for Big Bear Lake Recreation Area on the USDA website. The below are the cream of the crop, however.

12 Best Big Bear Off Road Trails

Blue Off-Road SUV Driving on Rocky Terrain

1. Gold Mountain Trail

Gold Mountain Trail is the gold standard of Big Bear off road trails . It’s been rated as very difficult by the USDA Forest Service and is the go-to Jeep trail for many organized tours, as well as a great favorite of intrepid off-roaders.

The most challenging section is only 3.2 miles long and is usually run from south to north, starting off Highway 18 near Baldwin Lake. This means it’s mostly a climb with a zig-zag up Gold Mountain where you reach the top elevation of 8,235 ft. To make it into a loop, continue northbound after the summit and loop counter-clockwise via Doble Trail Campground, for a total distance of c. 12 miles.

To ride on the Gold Mountain Trail, you’ll need a high-profile vehicle with at least 31-inch tires , preferably with rock sliders and a rear locker too. It’s worth the hard work, though: you’ll be rewarded with great views over the valleys and relive the gold rush years through the wilderness. However, bear in mind that most organized tours bring along spotters to help vehicles over the rough boulder sections, so only attempt this trail in a group or with an organized tour.

2. Burns and Rattlesnake Canyons Trail

This trail is for medium-level experienced off-roaders, and it’s one of the best Big Bear Jeep trails to try out. You need high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles, and you’ll be heading into rocky and sandy terrain. On its own, Rattlesnake Canyon Trail is 27.5 miles long, while Burns Canyon Trail just next to it offers another 19 miles.

You’ll pass historic gold mining ruins on your way. Watch out for the movie set built-in 1946 in Pioneertown, too – a generic “Old West” set-up that is still sometimes used in films but is definitely a fun tourist attraction.

To reach the trails, head to Yucca Valley, and the trailhead is just off of Pioneertown Road. You’ll start on the Burns Canyon Trail.

3. Big Pine Flat Trail

If the first two trails sound daunting, route 3N16, known as Big Pine Flat Trail, is an ideal easy off-road route in Big Bear. Starting in Green Valley on a paved road, you’ll ride over 26.6. miles into a graded dirt road and then end on a paved road north of Big Bear Lake (Holcomb Valley Road).

There is a river crossing at Crab Creek, which is usually shallow, and the trail is wider and easier to ride than some of the technical ones described here. It doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see: there are great views over Baldwin Lake, the ruins of the Lucky Baldwin stamp mill, and lots of forest landscape to feast your eyes on.

4. Dishpan Springs Trail

A challenging trail designed for off-roading experts only! Expect giant boulders, deep ruts, and deep river crossings on the Disphan Springs Trail (route 3N34). The crossing at Deep Creek has drowned many engines, so be prepared for the worst. It’s only 3.4 miles long, but the trail’s difficulty makes it relatively slow, and it’s encouraged to ride this as a group or on an organized tour. So if you’re looking for tough Big Bear OHV trails , check out Dishpan Springs.

Off-Road Tire

5. Gold Fever Trail

The  Gold Fever Trail  does what it says on the tin: it takes you back in time to the gold rush, exploring the remains of historical events in Holcomb Valley while you ride your Jeep on a relatively easy 20-mile loop trail beginning in Big Bear City. Expect some water crossings and rocks; however, the terrain is mostly easy to approach, and the trail is wide enough to let you focus on the scenery.

6. Knickerbocker

This  short trail  can be found easily within walking distance from the Village in Big Bear. It is one of the maintained Forestry Trails, so it doesn’t pose many difficulties, but it will give you views of the lake, the Holcomb Valley, and Gold Mountain.

You can then connect with Skyline at the end of the trail and extend your journey. This is a particularly great trail to try in the snow as long as it stays open. It’s one of the great trails of the Big Bear System. As it’s open to mountain bikes, you’ll need to keep an eye out for non-motorized riders too.

7. Van Dusen Canyon

Another easy Jeep off road trail in Big Bear is 3N09 through  Van Dusen Canyon . It’s excellent for starting out off-road or as a connection into the San Bernardino Forest. It’s mostly a forest trail, so you’ll be enjoying some peace and quiet in nature, with a slight climb throughout.

This is a multi-use trail where you can ride your Jeep or ATV and expect to see mountain bikers and hikers. It’s a great route if you’re looking for smooth Big Bear 4×4 trails.

8. Sand Canyon

Sand Canyon Trail  is not as well-known as the other trails we’ve listed here, but it’s worth a visit if you’re on the south-eastern edge of the Moonridge mountain neighborhoods. It’s a dirt road with a low gradient, about 5 miles long in total, which will take you from Moonridge to another trailhead to continue on Wildhorse Meadows Road going east towards Sugarloaf Mountain.

9. Coxey Road

Starting in Fawnskin on the northwest side of Big Bear Lake,  Coxey Road  is 19 miles long and offers an easy ride past campgrounds, lovely meadows, ridges, and scenic peaks. You’ll finish on Bowen Ranch Road, from where you can carry on to Apple Valley, or you can return to Big Bear. You can also make quite a few detours to explore other dirt trails and even some shooting areas along the route.

Coxey Road Big Bear

10. Delamar Mountain Road

This is another  connector off road trail  in Big Bear, passing north of Delamar Mountain through dense forests and carrying you into Holcomb Valley. Any 4×4 vehicle can easily pass through this trail, and it’s a nice break if you’re going across all the technical options you have in the area.

11. Butler Peak

Ride the Green Valley Campground trail from Fawnskin to reach the  Butler Peak Trail  trailhead – an incredible climb to the Butler Peak Fire Lookout to take in the views. This trail is only 2.9 miles long, and it’s relatively easy to climb, but its main attraction is the views you’ll be rewarded with.

You can see Calico Mountains, Big Bear Lake, Riverside, Orange County, Lake Arrowhead, and Mountain High. This is an excellent destination if you’ve just arrived in the area and want to plan your adventures, as you’ll be able to see almost anywhere you might want to explore!

12. Coyote Trail

While the most popular Big Bear off road trails seem to be concentrated on the north side, there are some hidden gems to explore on the south side of the lake, as we’ve seen already. The last one on our list is  Coyote Trail , ideal for first-time Jeep drivers, with amazing views back onto the lake and the great destination of Snow Summit in sight. This is where the bulk of skiing takes place in winter, but summer trails can be great fun, too.

Conclusion – Big Bear Lake, an Ideal Off Roading Destination in Southern California

To summarize, here are the 12 best Big Bear off road trails again:

With its multitude of trails and well-maintained Forest Roads, and associated trail systems, it’s a great idea to head to Big Bear Lake whether you want to ride easy or be challenged on some gnarly terrain. Big Bear off road trails offers various views, different levels of difficulty, and lots of associated activities from fishing to shooting and, of course, hiking, biking, and more.

On the cusp of winter, you can also enjoy riding in the early snow on the trails, which don’t get closed (check the Forest Service updates on their website to be in the loop). If you still need to be inspired, check out this  promotional video  of Big Bear Off Road Trails and plan your next trip!

This high desert area offers about six miles of ATV trails and about 62 miles of surrounding 4x4 trails. Most of the trails are dusty with loose rocks however the Joshua Tree trail is a smooth, fast and narrow twisty with many berms .

The main staging area is huge and amenities include a loading ramp, vault toilets and informational kiosk with trail maps. Camping is permitted but there is no water or shade so come prepared.

An Adventure Pass is required to camp or ride here which must be obtained prior to arrival since there is no self pay station. The pass can be purchased online, at nearby Lucerne Valley Market or at the local ranger stations.

One of the Top 3 Things to Do in Big Bear Lake

A super-fantastic day zipping through the treetops of Big Bear in gorgeous weather, which was made all the more enjoyable by a very courteous, friendly, and professional staff patiently taking each and every safety precaution required. A special shout-out to Jenn in the office. Splendid, indeed!

Took my grandsons, 10 and 8. First, you have an information tutorial and safety lecture, then a van takes you up the mountain to the first stop. All the drivers are fun and will answer any questions. There are 9 zip lines, with a stop half was to rest and have some water. There is a cameraman taking shots all along the way. The entire event takes a little over 3 hours. It was a really fun experience and the boys loved it!

My 11 year old son and I did this together and we both had a lot of fun. The guides are very helpful and have a great sense of humor. Everyone on the tour was accommodated. If you're a little apprehensive about doing this don't be. The views are amazing and the zip lines are a lot of fun. My only regret is that I wish it had lasted longer.

Went out with Phil for a wonderful morning snowshoe tour. Loved it! Action tours was great at scheduling and accommodation. First time snowshoeing, wasn't sure what to expect. It was easy and so peaceful! I will definitely be back. Great option for Moms and Dads not interested in the waiting at the crazy resorts while their kids are snowboarding.

I've never gone zip lining before. There is a lot of trust you have to put into someone who is making sure you are going to be safe as you go zooming high off the ground from one tree stand to another. The good news is these guys are as good as it gets. At no time did you anyone feel unsafe or rushed. It really is a lot of fun. I would highly recommend Action Zipline Tours.

We are a family of 5 with a 13, 12 and 10 year old...and did I mention, mama is afraid of heights? I can honestly say I had an amazing time (although I'm still afraid of heights). This is a perfect zipline tour for newbies. They start you out slow and easy before hurling you down the long and fast one. The guides on the ziplines are so helpful and very encouraging - even when you scream through the treetops. I would absolutely, definitely, put this on your "to-do" list.

How to Spend an Adventurous Day with Big Bear Adventures

Big Bear Adventures in Indian River takes full advantage of its location in the middle of the 40-mile Inland Waterway, Michigan’s longest chain of lakes and rivers. Situated near the Sturgeon River and Michigan’s state forest with its trails, they’ll provide what you’ll need to get out on the water in various watercraft or take to the woods in an ATV.

Whether staying in Indian River or at one of the other resort areas like Mackinaw City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, Harbor Springs, or Gaylord, Big Bear Adventures is within a mile of Interstate 75. The location makes it quick and easy to get to, no matter where you’re coming from.

Rafting on the Sturgeon River

Rafting on the Sturgeon River with Big Bear Adventures

On the Water

I suggest starting your day at Big Bear Adventures with the water portion of your day when you’re fresh, as I found the water activities to take the most effort. We went rafting but paddling any craft out on the river—rafting, canoeing, kayaking, or even just tubing you’ll want to be alert.

Also, this is the most time-variable part of the day, so you’ll want to allow plenty of time. How long a trip takes depends on the type of watercraft you use, the paddler, the river conditions, and the section of the river you choose to navigate. Another factor is the length and frequency of your stops during the trip.

While the Sturgeon River is a Class I/II and not whitewater, it is the fastest in the lower peninsula. Along with the twists and turns, you’ll still find it exciting. The average depth is 3 to 4 feet, but you’ll see sections typically around the outside of turns that are a bit deeper at 5 to 8 feet.

Even in the summer heat, the temperature is usually around 42 to 52 degrees because the water moves so quickly.

The river’s currents vary. The mid-sections to upper sections between Wolverine and Fisher Woods are the most challenging. The closer you get to Burt Lake; you’ll find the area smoother and slower. In the segments from Trowbridge to Wolverine, you’ll have an active paddling experience, although not as much as the parts farther north from Wolverine at Lumberjack Park.

Rafting on the Sturgeon River

Rafting on the Sturgeon River

Big Bear Adventures offers seven and five-person rafts, which are more stable than kayaks. But they also have kayaks available. So, while the current moves you down the river, your group must avoid impediments. Finally, the journey finishes at Burt Lake State Park, where you can swim and play on the beach. As a first-timer, rafting was fun and exciting, ending our trip at Burt Lake State Park.

Other ways to navigate the Sturgeon River include tubes, kayaks, and catamarans. Each type of watercraft offers something different from the others, and you’ll want to choose depending on how much time you have and your experience level.

Exploring via an ATV with Big Bear Adventures

Exploring via an ATV with Big Bear Adventures

Guided ATV Tours

ATVs or two-by-twos are an excellent way to get out in the woods. They offer a 2.5-hour guided ATV tour. While you drive through Michigan’s hardwood forests for a genuine northern Michigan experience, the guide leads your group in their vehicle while you follow. Because you’re with an experienced local guide, you needn’t worry about getting lost, mechanical issues, or road hazards. Yet, you have the fun of driving the trails yourself.

Big Bear Adventures has ATVs plus all the safety equipment. They outfit you with everything from helmets and goggles to scarves to protect you from dust and dirt. So, bring yourself and a sense of adventure!

Family Fun Center

18-hole adventure golf.

Even if someone in your group is an avid golfer, they’ll have fun with this course. It features 11 water hazards, including bubbling brooks, streams, waterfalls, and natural rock. Be careful of the swinging log and watch out for the grizzly looking for a lunch of salmon in the stream. They even have a mounted World Record 8-foot-tall Alaskan Brown Bear, from which Big Bear Adventures gets its name.

Depending on the size of your party, 18-holes of adventure golf will take between 45 and 90 minutes.

The Ropes Course

The course features 11 components that require balance, agility and focus to overcome. You’ll find challenges like tightrope walking, swinging steps, a tremor bridge, and vertical-angle stairs. The Sky Trail , the ropes challenge course, involves horizontally strung cables, ropes, boards, and other materials secured between steel supports to create elements or activities.

If you take this challenge, they’ll outfit you with a full body harness and a safety lanyard, or sling line, that is always hooked into an overhead safety system. You can cross each element by walking, balancing, or traversing to the opposite platform. But you’ll only want to do the pieces as you feel comfortable. For example, the sling line and harness won’t let you go more than 4 inches if you fall. Then you can get up and continue. You’ll want to allow a total of 30 minutes for this activity.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The maximum weight limit is 300 pounds.
  • Children must be at least 48 inches tall, and the harness must fit securely.
  • You must have closed-toe shoes that are secure at the heel. They don’t allow flip-flops or slides.
  • Croc-style shoes with a heel strap are acceptable. They rent them for $2.
  • They don’t allow skirts, dresses, or short shorts.
  • Pockets must be empty, eyeglasses secured, and no loose objects.

Bumper Boats

The bumper boats feature an ultra-quiet, 24-volt electric motor. You’ll only hear the fun sounds of splashing and laughter while your group battles with squirters attached to the bumper boats.

  • The maximum weight limit is 450 pounds.
  • When Single Riding, the driver must be at least 44 inches tall.
  • When Double Riding, the passenger must be at least 40 inches tall, and the driver must be at least 18 years old or a parent.
  • Two children can’t ride alone in the same boat.
  • Two adults can’t ride together in the same boat.
  • They don’t recommend this activity for individuals with heart, back, or neck problems.
