uBlock Origin - Free, open-source ad content blocker.

Easy on cpu and memory..

Github (gorhill/uBlock)

uBlock-Origin-Preview

uBlock Origin is not just an “ad blocker“, it's a wide-spectrum content blocker with CPU and memory efficiency as a primary feature.

Open-source ad blocker

The uBlock Origin is a free and open-source, cross-platform browser extension for content filtering—primarily aimed at neutralizing privacy invasion in an efficient, user-friendly method.

CPU and memory efficiency

Globally, uBlock Origin could save consumers more than $1.8 billion/year( study ). Open source ad blockers are a potentially effective technology for energy conservation.

Various browsers support

uBlock Origin’s extension is available for several of the most widely used browsers, including: Chrome, Chromium, MS Edge, Opera, Firefox and all Safari releases prior to 13.

About uBlock Origin

In 2014 uBlock Origin’s founder, original author and lead developer, Raymond Hill, created the original uBlock extension, with its development initiated by forking the codebase of HTTP Switchboard with a separate blocking extension, uMatrix, which had been previously designed for advanced users. The initial uBlock was developed by Raymond Hill in order to enable community-maintained block lists while simultaneously adding additional features and upgrading the code quality to proper release standards. First released in June 2014 as an exclusive Chrome and Opera extension, in late 2015 the initial uBlock extension expanded to other browsers under its current name – uBlock Origin. (occasionally represented globally as – uBlock₀).

Following this 2015 introduction, a collaborative comsource and Sourcepoint industry research survey reported an 833% growth rate over a 10-month period ending in August 2016, the most rapid growth among any industry software publicly listed at that time. This report attributed this enormous surge to collective user demand for “pure” blockers with the capacity to operate outside the “acceptable advertising” program used by AdBlock, and other industry extensions.

Quickly gaining traction throughout the entire ad-blocking industry, the uBlock Origin Firefox version collected over 5 million active users, with its Chrome extension subsequently compiling over 10 million active users. Developer Nik Rolls then officially released uBlock Origin for the Microsoft Edge browser in December 2016.

In January 2017, uBlock Origin was added to the repositories for Debian 9 , and Ubuntu (16.04), and the uBlock Origin extension was awarded the prestigious IoT honor of “Pick of the Month” by Mozilla.

As of 2024, uBlock Origin continues to be maintained and actively developed by founder and lead developer Raymond Hill.

The uBlock Origin extension remains an industry leading, open-source, cross-platform browser extension with software developed specifically for multiple platform use, and as of 2024, uBlock Origin’s extension is available for several of the most widely used browsers, including: Chrome, Chromium, Edge, Opera, Firefox and all Safari releases prior to 13.

The uBlock Origin project still specifically refuses donations at this time, and instead advises all of its clients, users and supporters to donate to block list maintainers.

Choosing from one of the multitude of ad-blockers available for Safari on the App Store can be daunting, which is why we’ve done the work for you. If you’re in a rush, our findings are summarized below:

  • Total Adblock : Our first choice for a Safari ad-blocker. Strong ad-blocking ability and can prevent social media trackers and access to malicious websites.

  • 1Blocker : Simple to use and great for quickly creating custom rules. Stops trackers, cookies and fingerprinting scripts as well as ads.
  • Wipr : Easy installation and great at blocking ads, trackers, and cryptocurrency miners. Can also prevent EU cookie and GDPR notices.

We used the criteria below to help us narrow down the Safari ad-blocker options. If you’re interested, we have a comprehensive section on our testing process later in this article.

  • Comprehensive and reliable ad-blocking
  • Good value for money
  • No acceptable ads
  • Plenty of customization
  • Security features

Here’s a list of the best ad-blockers for safari:

1. Total Adblock

Total Adblock is a powerful ad-blocker that removes banners, video ads and pop-ups by default from Safari – but only on iPhone and iPad. Mac users will need to use a different browser if they wish to employ Total Adblock.

The software can be configured to block websites known to distribute malware, and can also remove cookie and privacy warnings on trusted websites – thus speeding up page loading times. Alternatively, adding websites to a whitelist enables them to automatically display without any filters.

Using Total Adblock’s custom filters allows you to block any elements on a web page that you’d prefer not to see. A social media tracking blocking filter stops “like” and “share” buttons from appearing on websites.

The basic Total Adblock app is free, but will not block ads on the top 15,000 websites ranked on Alexa – thus making it fairly useless. You will also get access to TotalAV virus protection and PC Tune-Up software.

  • Robust ad-blocking with subscription
  • Stops ads on streaming sites
  • Enables element blocking
  • Subscription includes TotalAV antivirus
  • Prevents social media tracking
  • Annual subscription required for usable app

BEST AD-BLOCKER: Total Adblock is our top  ad-blocker for Safari. It offers rigorous blocking of ads and malware, and the subscription includes TotalAV antivirus.

AdLock for Safari is a free extension that blocks pop-ups, autoplay videos, and banner ads; while also protecting you against trackers, bugs, analytical systems, and scammers.

The UI is immediately approachable, making it easy to get started. Toggle switches help you set preferences, and there’s a whitelist where you can add any sites that you’d rather see unfiltered. There are no acceptable ads, so you don’t need to dig around trying to turn them off. You also don’t need to worry about your data being sold to third parties.

There’s scope for more comprehensive tinkering via the ad filters – AdLock recommends using a maximum of five for peak performance. These filters are mostly drawn from EasyList, which is the most popular option for ad-blockers. You can create custom rules and AdLock also allows the removal of any element from a page, including non-ad-related callback forms and online chat boxes.

AdLock is great for streaming sites. It can remove all pre-rolls, mid-rolls, post-rolls, and otherwise unskippable video commercials. You just need to engage a special one-click script or use the AdLock player. AdLock also stops social media widgets following you from site to site.

  • Rigorous blocking
  • Good for streaming sites
  • Protects privacy
  • Extension is free
  • Extension not as powerful as app

BEST BUDGET-FRIENDLY OPTION: AdLock’s free Safari browser  extension is a reliable ad-blocker that stops ads in streaming sites.

AdGuard for Safari is a free browser extension that stops all ads, trackers and widgets. You can create custom filtering rules and manually remove any web page element. The software helps with security by issuing warnings if you unintentionally visit malicious or phishing websites.

The AdGuard home screen allows you to set up the basics: notification preferences, update intervals, and which content blockers you’d like to use. Content blockers are thematic clusters of filters. For example, the AdGuard Security Blocker contains filters that stop browser-based cryptominers, domains known to spread malware and spyware, and sites associated with fraudsters.

Alternatively, you can add filters of your choosing in the custom area, or create custom rules that apply specific filtering criteria. For example, you might want a particular element removed when visiting such-and-such website. AdGuard provides instructions on how to master rule syntax.

AdGuard doesn’t collect any user data or allow “acceptable ads”. The software is open-source, with the repository on GitHub available via the AdGuard “About” page.

  • Intercepts malicious website connections
  • Allows custom rule creation
  • Stops social media widgets
  • Doesn’t block as much as its app

CUSTOMIZATION OPTIONS: AdGuard is a powerful, open-source ad-blocker that encourages the creation of custom filters and rules.

4. 1Blocker

1Blocker uses filters to tell Safari what to stop in advance. It’s effective at removing a range of ads, trackers and fingerprinting scripts. Setup is simple and the app automatically receives cloud updates to the built-in filters.

There is plenty of scope for customization. For example, you can create rules for a defined URL or hide a particular element with a CSS selector. You can also block cookies, or allow ads for a particular site while still blocking trackers and social buttons.

1Blocker doesn’t have access to the pages you visit and doesn’t track you in any way. There are no “acceptable ads,” as funding for the app comes from subscriptions. These cost either $2.99 a month, or $14.99 for a year. There is a free version of the app, but it’s limited in what it can do. For example, you can only block either trackers or ads – not both.

1Blocker is compatible with iPhones running iOS 14.2 or later, iPads running iPadOS 14.2 or later, iPod Touches running iOS 14.2 or later, and Macbooks running macOS 10.15 or later. Any preferences and custom rules are kept in sync across all devices via iCloud.

  • Easy to use
  • Blocks fingerprinting scripts
  • Easy to create custom rules
  • Doesn’t block all types of ads
  • Best features require subscription

GREAT FOR BEGINNERS: 1Blocker is simple  to set up, with a straightforward interface that makes creating custom rules easy.

Wipr is a relatively simple ad-blocker that can nevertheless block a wide range of trackers and ads, as well as cryptocurrency miners and EU cookie notices. Its blocklist is automatically updated twice a week, ensuring not much gets past it.

If you want to block ads from the likes of YouTube and other streaming sites , you can enable Wipr Extra. This requires full website access, so consider any privacy implications in leaving it turned on long-term.

Wipr is able to block ads in apps that display websites using the Safari View Controller. Note that it is not able to help with blocking scam, phishing or other malicious sites.

If purchased in the App Store, you’ll be able to install Wipr on all the iPhone and iPads with the same Apple ID. If purchased on a Mac, you’ll be able to install it on all the Macs with the same Apple ID. Wipr costs $1.99 in each store, so you’ll have to pay $3.98 if you wish to use it on both an iPhone and a Mac, for example.

The app is compatible with iPhones running iOS 12.0 or later, iPads running iPadOS 12.0 or later, and Macs running macOS 10.15 or later.

  • Straightforward ad-blocker
  • Doesn’t protect against malicious code
  • One purchase won’t cover all devices
  • No custom rules

EASY SETUP: Wipr is a straightforward  ad-blocker that keeps itself updated and blocks a decent number of ads and trackers.

Can I use a free ad-blocker for Safari?

You can, and there are many decent free ad-blockers available. However, as with most products that seem free, there’s often a hidden cost. Some ad-blockers make money by allowing some ads through – what are sometimes called “acceptable ads.” Other, less scrupulous, apps may even sell your data to third parties.

More commonly, ad-blocking developers create a free version of the subscription-only service – typically a browser extension. This has less features than the paid-for version, but allows people to become familiar with the service and pay out when they find that they can’t live without a particular feature.

How to install a Safari ad-blocker:

If you want to use a Safari browser extension ad-blocker, follow these instructions:

  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Scroll down and tap Safari .
  • Under General , tap Content Blockers .
  • Activate your chosen content blocker by toggling the switch next to it to the green ON position.

If you’ve downloaded an ad-blocker app for Safari, follow these instructions to enable it:

  • Click on Safari in the top left-hand corner.
  • Select Safari Extensions from the drop-down menu.
  • Wait for the App Store to automatically open on the extensions page.
  • Search for the ad-blocker you’d like to add.
  • Click Get underneath the ad-blocker extension.
  • Sign in with your Apple ID if required and start downloading.
  • Click install to get the app up and running.
  • Open the extension and follow the instructions.
  • Click on Safari in the top right corner once more.
  • Select Preferences from the drop-down menu.
  • Tick the checkbox next to the ad-blocker you downloaded.

Methodology: Finding the best Safari ad-blocker

Most Safari ad-blocking extensions are capable of preventing certain cookies, images, pop-ups and other unwanted content from being downloaded. So what makes one better than the other? The best Safari ad-blockers will perform notably well when tested against the criteria below:

  • Comprehensive blocking: We expect ad-blockers to be able to block most types of advert that appears on a web page. This includes pop-ups , banners, and interstitial ads. We also require the removal of autoplay video and audio, as well as the option to stop chat boxes and pre-roll ads.
  • Good value: An expensive ad-blocker doesn’t necessarily mean it’s worth your money. We only include ad-blockers that can justify what they charge. This normally means they provide superior blocking ability with other privacy and security features.
  • No acceptable ads: We know that developers need to make money, but allowing ads on an ad-blocker doesn’t seem like the right way to do it. For this reason, we don’t recommend ad-blockers that allow paid advertising to be displayed.
  • Plenty of customization: Ruthless blocking seems great… until it isn’t. Being able to whitelist sites is a good starting point. However, a good ad-blocker allows you to create custom rules for everything from ads to trackers, cookies and notices. We also like to be able to customize blocking on an element-by-element basis.
  • Security features: It’s not just ads we want to see blocked, it’s trackers, fingerprinting script and any malicious code whatsoever. Ad-blockers that intercept connections to untrusted sites score points too.
  • Compatibility: Safari is available on all Apple devices, including Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Although all of the ad-blockers we looked at worked with Safari, they didn’t all work great across all devices. The mobile Safari app is different to the macOS Safari app, and so we only recommend ad-blockers that have been specifically designed to work across all Apple devices.

FAQs: Best ad-blocker for Safari

Does apple allow ad-blockers.

Apple began allowing ad-blockers on the iPhone and iPad versions of Safari in 2015. Devices running iOS 9 were – for the first time – permitted to add content blocking extensions to Safari.

Prior to this, the only way to block adverts was to “jailbreak” the devices, which involved replacing – or modifying – key components of the operating system with custom applications. Where subsequent security measures weren’t instigated, this resulted in their becoming easier for attackers to infiltrate.

Apple allowing ad-blocking Safari extensions negated the need to do this. At the same time, it ensured that the company could still make money from allowing advertising in apps.

Are ad-blockers legal?

Yes, though there were a slew of court cases when Apple first began allowing ad-blockers. These were brought by media companies that were heavily reliant on advertising money. None of them were successful, and the use of ad-blockers has been steadily increasing since – much to the chagrin of the ad industry.

The problem is that ads are becoming ever more invasive. Many actively prevent us from enjoying a particular website’s content until we’ve interacted with the advert. Meanwhile, ad-blockers are getting more powerful and easier to install.

Of course, the people who run that website might say that ad-blockers are morally questionable. After all, advertising revenue effectively pays for the website. There is ultimately no easy solution. Some sites try using a paywall to stay ad-free, while others incorporate adverts into their content. A short-term solution involves site owners asking users to whitelist their sites if they like them.

How do ad-blockers work?

Ad-blockers detect scripts designed to make your browser load content from the servers of ad networks. By blocking these scripts, the adverts aren’t requested or displayed. Ad-blockers can also block scripts that monitor your online behavior or contain malicious code. Ad-blockers are able to detect scripts by comparing them with huge lists of offending domains – often created by the online community.

Without these additional advertising requests playing out, pages tend to require less bandwidth and are quicker to download. Indeed, research suggests that the execution of third-party scripts can account for more than half of a page’s loading time.

This article explains how to use content blockers to block ads in Safari on iPhones with iOS 9 or higher.

Your phone must have iOS 9 or higher to use content blockers. Update the iPhone OS to ensure it has the most up-to-date version with current security patches.

How to Block Ads on iPhone With Safari

Using an ad blocker for your iPhone means your browser won't download ads. This usually means faster page loads, a longer-lasting battery, and less wireless data usage. If you don't want to see pop-up ads, there is a way to block these ads. Here's how to do so using the Safari web browser for iPhone.

Content blockers are apps that add new features that your default web browser doesn't have. These are like third-party keyboards —separate apps that work inside other apps that support them. This means that to block ads, you need to install at least one of these apps.

Most iPhone content blockers work the same way. When you go to a website, the app checks a list of ad services and servers. If it finds these on the site you're visiting, the app blocks the website from loading those ads on the page. Some apps take a comprehensive approach by blocking the ads and tracking the cookies used by advertisers based on those cookies' URLs .

How to Install Content Blocking Apps

To block ads with Safari content blocker apps, install the app, and then enable it from the iPhone Settings app.

Go to the App Store and download a content-blocking app to your iPhone. The example here is Norton Ad Blocker, but all ad-blocking apps work similarly. See the list below for other suggested apps.

Open the ad blocker app and follow the instructions to set it up. Every app is different, but each offers instructions to turn on the ad-blocking abilities.

On the iPhone home screen, open the Settings app.

Select Safari > Content Blockers .

Move the toggle switch next to the ad-blocker app you installed to On (green).

Choose an Ad-Blocking Plug-In for Safari

There is a sizable market for ad-blocking Safari plug-ins. The following options can get you started:

  • 1Blocker : Free, with in-app purchases. In addition to more than 50,000 built-in blocker rules, this app supports custom rules to block sites and cookies and to hide other elements.
  • Crystal Adblock : At $0.99, the developer claims that this ad blocker loads pages four times faster and uses 50 percent less data. This app also lets you opt to view ads on some sites to support those sites.
  • Norton Ad Blocker : This free ad-blocking app from the company behind the popular and long-running antivirus software also lets you add exceptions.
  • Purify : Grab this content blocker for $1.99 to block ads and tracking software. It includes a list (typically called a whitelist) to allow you to see ads on some sites if you like. According to the developer, after blocking Safari ads with this app, you can expect a fourfold increase in page load speeds and your web browsing data usage to be cut in half.

How to Block Pop-Ups on the iPhone Using Built-In Tools

Ad-blocking apps can block all kinds of ads and trackers used by advertisers. If you only want to block intrusive pop-ups, you don't need to download an app because pop-up blocking is a built-in feature in Safari. Here's what you need to do:

On the iPhone home screen, select Settings > Safari .

Toggle the Block Pop-ups switch to On (green), if it isn't already.

You can enable the Safari pop-up blocker on your computer, too.

The main benefit of blocking ads is that you don't see advertising. However, there are other key benefits to using these anti-advertisement apps:

  • Websites load faster : Ads are extra elements on the page that have to load, and ads often stream video or play animations. It takes time for the page to fully download and often causes other things like non-ad images and videos to take longer to display.
  • You'll be more secure : Many ads are vectors for malware. Infected ads hit a network, even a legitimate one, to disrupt your device.
  • You use less data : When you no longer see ads, you won't use your monthly data allowances to load ads. Some ad-blocking apps claim to save you lots of data. While their numbers may be inflated, you'll reduce your data usage to some degree because ad images and videos don't download to your phone.
  • A longer-lasting battery : Downloading ads, just like downloading anything in Safari, requires energy. One way to have a longer-lasting battery is to stop downloading so much data, which is what happens when you use an ad blocker.

Why You Shouldn't Block Ads

One downside you might encounter when you block ads on your iPhone is that some websites don't load properly. Some sites detect whether their ads load, and if ads don't load, you can't use the site until you unblock their ads.

Almost every site on the internet makes the majority of its money by showing advertising to its readers. If the ads are blocked, the site doesn't get paid. The money made from advertising pays writers and editors, funds server and bandwidth costs, buys equipment, pays for photography and travel, and more. Without that income, it's possible that a site you visit every day could go out of business. Consider supporting your favorite sites by whitelisting them, so ads on those sites still display.

If you are looking for a free blocker, then you can consider Adblock and Ghostery.

AdLock

  • Social media and spyware blockers only available on paid tier

Best for browser extensions

uBlock Origin

  • Better suited for advanced users because some features require technical knowledge

AdLock, a freemium service starting from $2.49/mo, is a great choice if you need mobile compatibility as it supports both Android and iOS devices. On the other hand, uBlock Origin is a free alternative that boasts impressive performance in blocking ads without impacting page load times.

Based on our extensive testing, including specific scenarios like YouTube viewing and pop-up handling, this comparison will help you decide which ad blocker fits your online habits and tech ecosystem.

AdLock vs. uBlock Origin

Choosing the right ad blocker can significantly enhance your browsing experience and online privacy. AdLock and uBlock Origin are two prominent players in the ad-blocking business, each offering unique advantages tailored to different user needs.

AdLock excels in mobile environments with dedicated apps for Android and iOS, offering ad blocking across devices. uBlock Origin caters to desktop users with a free, powerful solution, supporting major browsers but lacking mobile compatibility. Choose AdLock for mobile use or uBlock Origin for a free desktop alternative.

AdLock pros and cons

  • Extensive mobile support
  • Effective YouTube ad blocking
  • User-friendly interface
  • Need the paid version to block social media ads and spyware
  • Limited browser extension options

uBlock Origin pros and cons

  • Completely free
  • High efficacy in ad blocking
  • Wide browser compatibility
  • No mobile version
  • Some advanced settings may challenge non-technical users

AdLock vs. uBlock Origin: prices

AdLock offers a free plan as well as a flexible pricing range. Its monthly subscription costs $3.50/mo and the annual plan comes in at a significantly reduced rate of $2.80/mo.

Opting for the 12-month plan lowers the overall cost and ensures full access to AdLock's ad-blocking features, making it an economical choice for the long term. Additionally, AdLock provides a 30-day money-back guarantee, offering peace of mind and a risk-free way to test its capabilities.

uBlock Origin stands out as a completely free alternative, providing effective ad blocking without any financial commitment. Its lack of a price tag, combined with robust ad-blocking capabilities across multiple platforms, makes it especially appealing if you’re on a budget or prefer not to commit to ongoing costs.

Winner: uBlock Origin offers the best price by being entirely free.

AdLock vs. uBlock Origin: features

AdLock and uBlock Origin offer robust feature sets for ad blocking, but there are notable differences in their approach and additional functionalities. Both provide essential features like ad, pop-up, and tracker blocking.

However, uBlock Origin stands out with its dynamic blacklisting capability. Its filters are highly customizable, allowing you to adjust blocking levels and engage with an active community for support.

AdLock, on the other hand, offers unique features such as language-specific filters and protection against social media ads, phishing, and spyware.

AdLock Ad blocking tab with statistics and settings.

uBlock Origin's emphasis on advanced user control and extensive filter customization options make it highly effective for those who wish to tailor their browsing experience closely. In contrast, AdLock's integration of user-friendly features and additional security measures provides an all-in-one solution if you prefer simplicity and additional security functionalities beyond just ad blocking.

uBlock Origin's available filter lists and customization options

Winner: uBlock Origin wins for its superior customization and dynamic filtering capabilities, making it ideal for users who value detailed control over what gets blocked. However, AdLock remains a strong contender for those seeking straightforward usability with added security features.

AdLock vs. uBlock Origin: test results

AdLock and uBlock Origin demonstrated strong ad blocking capabilities yet showed subtle differences in performance across various criteria. uBlock Origin achieved a higher score on the AdBlock Tester, notching up 96/100 compared to AdLock's 92/100. This suggests a slightly better efficiency in blocking a broad range of ad types and tracking scripts.

However, in our Cover Your Tracks test, AdLock scored better with 2.5/3 over uBlock Origin’s score of 2/3. AdLock showed a superior ability to protect against fingerprinting techniques (when your browser collects information that’s unique to a single user, their browser, and their hardware setup). Having a nearly unique fingerprint is better than having a unique fingerprint.

AdLock's Cover Your Tracks test results.

With the Can You Block It platform, uBlock Origin received a perfect score. This indicates robustness in handling different ad formats, including more challenging interstitial ads. But AdLock wasn’t able to completely block the interstitial ad unfortunately.

Both AdLock and uBlock Origin effectively blocked YouTube ads, demonstrating their effectiveness in maintaining an uninterrupted viewing experience. Neither was able to block hard paywalls, but uBlock Origin managed to bypass a soft paywall (Reading Eagle).

Winner: uBlock Origin edges slightly ahead as the more effective ad blocker in our tests, particularly excelling in ad and tracker blocking.

AdLock vs. uBlock Origin: compatibility and customer support

AdLock and uBlock Origin offer different experiences in terms of usability and support. AdLock boasts a user-friendly interface that integrates smoothly across multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. Its settings are straightforward with easily accessible toggles for ad-blocking preferences, making it suitable for anyone new to ad blockers.

In contrast, uBlock Origin, primarily a browser extension, supports a variety of browsers but lacks dedicated mobile apps. Its interface can be more complex, especially with advanced settings that offer deeper customization. This might pose challenges for less experienced users.

In terms of customer support, AdLock provides 24/7 support through email, phone, and an informative knowledge base. This is particularly advantageous if you need assistance outside of regular business hours.

Meanwhile, uBlock Origin relies on a community-driven approach, offering support primarily through online resources, which might not be as immediate or personalized as some may prefer.

Winner: AdLock offers the best compatibility across both desktop and mobile platforms and superior customer service with its 24/7 support options.

AdLock vs. uBlock Origin FAQs

Is ublock origin better than adblock.

Comparing uBlock Origin and AdBlock involves considering both performance and user preferences. uBlock Origin is generally favored for its lower resource usage and its open-source nature, while AdBlock is an easy-to-use tool that you can set and forget.

Is it safe to download AdLock?

Yes, downloading AdLock is safe as long as it is done from the official website or a trusted app store. AdLock has strong ad-blocking capabilities alongside features like anti-tracking and anti-phishing, enhancing your device's security against malicious content and ensuring a safer browsing experience.

What is the difference between AdLock and AdBlock Plus?

The main differences between AdLock and AdBlock Plus lie in their approach to ad blocking and user control.

AdLock offers more features (including advanced protection against phishing and malware) and operates without acceptable ads. AdBlock Plus allows non-intrusive ads by default but lets you opt-out of these ads.

Which ad blocker is best for Chrome?

uBlock Origin is often recommended for Chrome users due to its efficiency and low impact on system resources. It integrates well with Chrome, providing powerful ad-blocking capabilities without significantly slowing down browsing.

However, for those seeking a simpler, more straightforward solution, AdLock also performs well on Chrome with the added benefit of extra security features.

AdLock vs. uBlock Origin: Which is better?

AdLock and uBlock Origin each bring distinct advantages to the table.

AdLock offers a solution that extends beyond typical browser ad blocking. It supports multiple platforms (including mobile devices), providing a holistic protection suite that includes anti-tracking, anti-phishing, and malware defense. However, its reliance on a subscription model could be a drawback if you’re looking for a free solution.

On the other hand, uBlock Origin and its free, open-source approach appeal to tech-savvy users. It’s highly efficient, customizable, and uses fewer system resources. Although its extensive customization options can enhance ad blocking, these features may seem daunting to less experienced users. Its lack of mobile support could also be a limiting factor for those who frequently browse on smartphones or tablets.

Considering the overall performance, feature set, and broad device compatibility, AdLock is the best ad blocker for most users. Its ability to extend beyond traditional ad blocking by offering additional security features like anti-tracking and anti-phishing across all major platforms, including mobile devices, makes it especially valuable.

How to Block Ads on Spotify Without Paying for Premium

O ne of the most annoying aspects of Spotify's free tier is the ads. Every half hour or so, the service injects a bunch of ads that interrupt your listening. There are two ways to get rid of the ads: either pay for Spotify Premium, or use any of the Spotify ad blockers I've listed in this guide.

Consider Spotify Premium

If you can afford Spotify Premium, consider subscribing. You don't always have to pay full price, either: I previously wrote a guide that helps you find the best Spotify Premium discounts . With Premium, not only does Spotify block ads, but it also adds useful features such as the ability to download songs, view time-synced lyrics, use unlimited song skips, and turn on improved audio quality.

But even though the free tier has its limitations and annoyances, Spotify does let you access interesting features such as podcast transcriptions and Spotify Blend without paying a dime. The only problem is that Spotify can take away any free feature and put it behind a paywall at any point, as it recently did with time-synced lyrics, which used to be available for free.

What Spotify ad blockers can and can't do

A Spotify ad blocker will usually either remove ads from Spotify's free tier or automatically mute the app when ads are playing. An ad blocker will not let you access all of Spotify Premium's features without paying. There are certain modded Spotify clients for Android that will allow you to add in premium features for free, but you're using these tools at your risk. Your account might get banned, or worse, your phone and all the sensitive data in it could be compromised by rogue applications.

How to block Spotify ads in web browsers

Spotify’s web player works pretty well across browsers. If that’s how you use the service, a browser extension can block ads for you. Most people will want to use uBlock Origin to block Spotify ads, but note that it blocks ads on all other websites, too. If you’d rather not block ads across the entire internet, Blockify is the Chrome extension you need. It'll block ads on Spotify alone and nowhere else.

How to hide Spotify ads on PC

There are two ways to block all ads in Spotify’s Windows app without paying for Spotify Premium. Just know that these blockers won’t work with the Microsoft Store version of the Spotify app. You’ll have to download the app directly from Spotify’s website to be able to use them.

BlockTheSpot is among the best ad blockers for Spotify on Windows. Its GitHub page goes through all the install instructions, and the blocker will remove audio, video, and banner ads from Spotify’s app. BlockTheSpot now claims it'll continue to work even if Spotify gets updated, and that it also allows you to access audio in higher quality without paying. This app also lets you hide the Upgrade button, which Spotify uses to urge you to get Premium. You still won't be able to download music if you're using BlockTheSpot, though.

If you’re looking for an alternative to BlockTheSpot, try BurntSushi . The key difference between these two apps is that BlockTheSpot is a modified Spotify client that lets you remove various annoying features, while BurntSushi is an ad blocker that works by intercepting network requests to block Spotify ads. In theory, BurntSushi should be more resilient and continue to work for longer, but both of these apps have been around for years.

How to remove Spotify ads on Mac and Linux

On Mac, you can use BlockTheSpot-Mac to block ads on the app. Install the Spotify app, quit it, and follow the instructions on the GitHub page to install the ad blocker. If you’re using Spotify’s app on Linux, you can try Spotify-adblock —just be sure to check if it’s compatible with your Linux distro before installing it.

For those who are comfortable with command line interfaces, Spicetify is a good alternative.

Mute Spotify ads on Android

On your Android phone, you can easily mute Spotify whenever it plays ads. It's not a perfect ad blocking solution, but silence is far more bearable than annoying ads. To set this up, download Mutify . Once the app is installed, go to Spotify's settings and enable Device Broadcast Status . This will allow Mutify to figure out when ads are playing and mute Spotify. With this, you can enjoy listening to music while Mutify runs in the background and takes care of muting ads for you.

Microsoft seasons Start menu in Windows 11 with ads. How to avoid them?

Microsoft, the tech giant that juggles an impressive portfolio of assets, has apparently decided to squeeze a few more droplets of money out of Windows users by stuffing the Start menu in Windows 11 with ads.

The recommended section of the Start menu will now display some Microsoft Store apps “from a small set of curated developers,” according to the company. Ostensibly, this move is meant to help users discover new and “great” apps, but it risks cluttering the screen with unnecessary distractions.

5mw77windows_ads

Source: WindowsLatest

For users who have updated to the latest version of the OS, clicking the Start button will now reveal not only a neat arrangement of their usual pinned apps, but also recommended third-party apps. The new treat, or rather scourge, is only for individual PC users. PCs managed by organizations, classified as commercial devices, are spared from this intrusion of ads.

me7xzwindows113

If you’re one of the many users who find this feature more of a nuisance than a benefit, there’s a way to disable it. You can go to Settings > Personalization > Start and uncheck the Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more checkbox. You can also change the layout at the top of the screen by selecting “More pins” to minimize the space taken up by the recommendations section.

While Microsoft gives users a choice, it’s still unfortunate that they have to resort to such measures to reclaim control over their user experience. By enabling the feature by default and offering a convoluted process to opt out of these recommendations, Microsoft showcases a lack of consideration for user autonomy. It begs the question: why force users to jump through hoops to avoid something they never asked for in the first place?

More ads on the way: Settings home page next

But it’s not only the Start Menu which is slated to be inundated with ads. In the latest build released to the Windows 11 Insider Dev channel, alongside fixes and improvements, Microsoft has introduced a new ad slot on the Settings homepage promoting its Game Pass subscription service . This recommendation card will be displayed for users who actively play games on their PC and are signed into Windows with their Microsoft account.

ppt87ghavkd

Source: Ghacks

For now, the ad slot is only rolling for those who have agreed to “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.”

Microsoft’s aggressive approach to advertising

It’s not the first time Microsoft has been caught implementing questionable advertising practices. In March, Windows users reported noticing “malware-like” pop-ups in Google Chrome prompting them to switch to Bing on WIndows 10 and Windows 11 .

mjpzxmicrosoft

Source: Reddit

Last year, in a bid to prevent users from downloading Google Chrome, Microsoft went as far as injecting a compulsory pop-up poll in its Edge browser that prompted users to answer questions about why they were considering an alternative before they could proceed with the download.

In 2020, Microsoft users reported instances where Microsoft’s then new Chromium Edge browser was automatically installed via Windows updates, overriding their preferences and intruding upon their desktops without consent .

So, the aggressive in-your-face advertising tactics regardless of user wishes seems to be Microsoft’s tried and true MO at this point.

AdGuard to block Start Menu ads

As part of our commitment to give users more control over their OS experience, AdGuard will soon release an update to the AdGuard for Windows app that addresses the issue of ads infiltrating the Start menu in Windows 11 . We are also working on approaches to banish ads from Settings home page. These updates, when released, will empower users by effectively blocking these intrusive ads and restoring the tab to a clutter-free state for smoother user experience and navigation.

Older adults are having sex, and they’re getting STIs, too

Aging adults who have sex with a new partner should be screened for chlamydia, syphilis and other infections.

ad block safari free

“Any falls in the past 90 days? Are you sleeping okay, getting enough exercise, eating well? What medications are you taking?” My primary care doctor asked the questions you’d expect at the annual physical of someone who had just turned 60.

There was one topic she didn’t mention, though. Even though she knew I’d recently been divorced, the doctor didn’t ask if I’d become sexually active, nor did she talk to me about screenings for chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhea or HIV. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I didn’t ask her about sex, either.

In my younger years, checkups typically included at least a mention of safer sex. Granted, the topic wasn’t as pressing during my married years, but now that I was single, why wasn’t sexual health on the checklist? Because I’m… “old”? Because older people don’t have sex?

“Unfortunately, a lot of providers perceive that older adults don’t have sex, that they don’t want to have sex, or they cannot have sex, and that’s simply not true,” says Matthew Lee Smith, an associate professor in the health behavior department at Texas A&M’s School of Public Health.

Well, in fact, older people are having sex. Not only that, they like having sex. According to a new study from the National Poll on Healthy Aging, 4 in 10 adults ages 65 to 80 report being sexually active. More than half say sex is important to their quality of life. That’s the good news.

Here’s the bad: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are surging among older adults, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cases of gonorrhea among those 55-plus have grown about 600 percent since 2010. Chlamydia cases have quadrupled, while syphilis cases are now nearly 700 percent higher than in 2010.

What’s going on?

“Rising divorce rates, forgoing condoms as there is no risk of pregnancy, the availability of drugs for sexual dysfunction, the large number of older adults living together in retirement communities, and the increased use of dating apps are likely to have contributed to the growing incidence of STIs in the over 50s,” said Justyna Kowalska, a professor of medicine at the Medical University of Warsaw and author of a 2024 study on how to manage STIs among older adults, in a news release about the study.

Mary Susan Fulghum, a retired OB/GYN in North Carolina, is on a mission to educate older people, primarily women, about rising rates of STIs, and often speaks to church groups, book clubs, community groups — such as nursing homes and retirement villages.

“I have felt a need to explain and identify risk factors,” she told me, “and let people know it’s okay to talk about it to the doctors.” On occasion, the women she talks to seem shocked — at one event an older woman told her, “I can’t believe you are actually talking to a group about this.” But more often the older women exhibit a mix of curiosity, gratitude and some denial.

Experts offered five reasons that help explain why STI rates are rising among older people:

Older adults tend to underestimate their risk. “These individuals have limited knowledge about STIs — transmission, symptomology and ways to prevent them,” Smith said. He notes that educational resources are not readily available in senior centers, residential communities or doctors’ offices. And who wants to be the one to ask for them? Fulghum agrees, which is why she goes to those in need of resources. “These people have been smart their entire lives. ... They want to know what to do and they will do it,” she said, noting that older adults may need encouragement and support about how to make smarter choices.

Providers have their own issues about discussing sex. Texas A&M’s Smith acknowledges that most health-care providers don’t talk to their patients about sexual needs, behaviors and desires — a significant proportion of providers believe that their older patients aren’t generally having sex, so “they’re not testing older adults for sexually transmitted infections.”

Fulghum suggests that if doctors feel uncomfortable having these sorts of discussions, “it’s their responsibility to make sure they have the resources in their office to make things as comfortable as possible” for patients. One suggestion she has for male providers: turn to a female associate — another doctor or nurse practitioner — who may be better able to communicate with female patients.

Chris Skidmore, deputy director of Whitman County public health department in Washington state, said time-crunched providers often focus on “larger health concerns of folks at that age, like heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and cancer” rather than sex education.

Older adults tend to shy away from condoms . Those over 55 may associate using condoms with avoiding pregnancy, not preventing STIs.

“This generation rarely considers using protection because they came of age when sex education in school did not exist, HIV was virtually unheard of, and their main concern … was to avoid pregnancy,” wrote Janie Steckenrider, associate professor of political science at Loyola Marymount University, in a study published in Lancet Healthy Longevity.

Fulghum recommends anyone starting a new sexual relationship be tested for STIs. “From there you can move the conversation towards condoms,” she said, adding rhetorically, “What 70-year-old woman is going to go into a drugstore and ask to buy condoms?” (Note: They’re generally in the family planning aisle; it’s also easy and more private to buy them online.) Fulghum said it’s important that both partners take responsibility for buying and using condoms, regardless of gender.

Older adults aren’t comfortable talking with new partners about their sexual histories. Those dating again after being widowed or divorced can find themselves in uncomfortable terrain, Smith said, but conversations about sex are important — to assess risk — even if challenging. Some relevant questions to ask a new partner include: Have you had unprotected sex? When were you last tested for STIs? Timing is everything: Have that talk before you have sex. Anyone hooking up via an app — which older folks are doing — has even more reason to use protection.

New medications are helping older people remain sexually active. There are drugs for erectile dysfunction as well as injectable medications that can help a man achieve an erection (typically after prostate removal). According to the Michigan study, nearly 1 in 5 men had taken medications or supplements to boost sexual function. For postmenopausal women there are FDA-approved treatments for vaginal dryness, painful sex or low libido.

So what can be done to stop or slow rising STI rates among older people? Experts have two main suggestions:

Sexual health screening questions should be part of every older adult’s routine checkup . And STI testing should be offered when warranted .

Patients who are sexually active, or planning to be, need to be proactive with their doctors. It can be a challenge to talk with a health-care provider about sex, especially with a physician who may be much younger (more common as we age) or of a different gender or sexual orientation. If you’re not comfortable, seek out a new provider who might be a better match — or ask for someone in the practice who might be a better match.

Finally, as Fulghum said, “Our problem is that [younger] people don’t like to think about older people having sex. … Old people aren’t supposed to do things like that any more.” Except they are, she said, adding that she reminds her older audiences that sex is supposed to be a “fun kind of thing” — and safe. Even when you’re older.

Best Adblocker

Straightforward UI thats not overly complicated and easily allows the user to custom choose what protection they would like. AdGuard has also included its own set of rules that have been built from easylist/easyprivacy & fanboy list and specifically customized them for the mobile platform and iOS specifically that can used by themselves, with easylist, or not at all. They give full control to the user, no sponsor ads or paid ads are allowed through. There is a filter that allows self promotion ads like the ones see when using googles search engine, but the user can turn it off and on. If none of AdGuards syntax rules block a specific popup, ad, or third-party widget there’s an option to manually block it and add it to the user filter option so its blocked in the future. Whitelist is also available to turn rules off on certain websites. And the rules update multiple times throughout the day regularly so the latest adblock protection is always used.

Love, love, love!!!

This extension does it all, I’m a victim of identity theft and this has been a God Send. For over ten years someone has sit around watching my ever move through my main email with yahoo. I had this email for over 15 yrs now. These people took every financial account I had and then spent money on everyone. They have accounts with each of the credit bureaus, they have subjected me to countless data breaches, in which they claimed my claim in their names.I have had no relief since August 2020 when I first found out that my identity was stolen. Sorry I’m rambling but I just cannot say enough about this AdGuard, it has given me relief it has given me options in my reliefAnd just when I thought it couldn’t get any better I got an invitation to do the testing! I’m at awe at the work you all have put in to help others, I would have given as many stars as there were if there could be more. My only complaint is I have bought the upgrade and it got stolen because these people are roothless and make aliases to every email account I make, then they take it over. This has happened with many apps and extensions not just this one! However, this one is by far my favorite then and now and probably forever. If you need something g that really works and that is user friendly, I’d urge you to try AdGuard and AdGuard VPN as well it’s a package deal really.

Unprofessional service

I purchased ad guard for life time approximately fews months already. And I enjoyed the powerful ad blocking. However, since the AdGuard, there is always a window popped out in my MAC said apple wants to make some changes. I ignored at first. However I could not stand any note after frequently annoying popped out windows hundreds of times after, and I agreed the change Which disabled the adguard. I tried reset all settings and reinstalled it. It just didn’t work any more. Therefore, I tried to contract with the AdGuard service. One point I want to mention that I was pretty impressive AdGuard service works for 24 hours even in quarantine time. However, the guy was not professional at all. I followed his instructions reset and reinstalled at first which did not work, and he once remotely controlled my Mac, but the problem still didn’t solve. Finally, he left a message said this case is not typical but I will asked for our workers solved it and contacted you at most in 48hours. THIS IS A FAKE PROMISE AGAIN! yes! Before, he just kept giving me fake promise. And this time I waited 4 days already. No replying, and even the phone is not available now. I tried to have my best attitude because I understand their jobs are not easy. But at lease, giving back me a professional attitude and available credit. BECAUSE I SAW THERE WOULD BE LIFE TIME GUARANTEE WHEN I TRUSTED AND PURCHASED LICENSE FOR LIFE TIME WHICH IS NOT CHEAP!!!

Cicada map 2024: See where to find Brood XIX and XIII − and where they've already been spotted

ad block safari free

For many Americans, the cicadas are here .

Trillions of periodical cicadas are already emerging in a rare, two brood event across multiple states , with more expected to come in the following weeks. Thanks to warm temperatures and good conditions, these 13- or 17-year cicadas are emerging from their underground habitats to eat, mate and die, making a whole lot of noise in the process.

Broods XIX and XIII have not emerged together since 1803, and after this year, won't emerge together again until 2245. While they are largely in different states, they are both emerging in parts of Illinois and Iowa.

So if you've seen one cicada or hundreds of cicadas, here's where you can expect to see more this year.

Are cicadas dangerous? Busting myths on the harmfulness of the noisy pests.

Are cicadas already out in 2024?

Adult periodical cicadas from Brood XIX have been spotted by users in multiple states across the Southeast and Midwest including in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and Illinois, according to  Cicada Safari , a cicada tracking app developed by Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Through Cicada Safari, users can confirm their sightings of cicadas with pictures, look at a map of other cicada sightings, join a leaderboard with other users and learn more information about cicadas.

2024 cicada map: Check out where Broods XIII, XIX are projected to emerge

The two cicada broods are projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in many states in May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.

What is a brood?

According to the  University of Connecticut , broods are classified as "all periodical cicadas of the same life cycle type that emerge in a given year."

A brood of cicadas is made up of different species of the insect that have separate evolutionary histories. These species may have joined the brood at different times or from different sources. These different species are lumped together under the brood because they are in the same region and emerge on a common schedule.

Why do cicadas make so much noise?

You'll have to thank the male cicadas for all that screeching. Male cicadas synchronize their calls and produce congregational songs, according to  Britannica , which establish territory and attract females. There is also a courting call that they make before mating.

Unluckily for us, the 13-year and 17-year brood cicadas  are the loudest , partially because of the sheer number of them that emerge at once.
