Top Cheap Weekend Getaways

Asheville, North Carolina, is one of the best places for an affordable weekend escape.
Sometimes you just need to escape from your everyday routine – but you may not have weeks (or funds) on end to spend away from home. For those seeking a quick, affordable trip, we've compiled a variety of cheap weekend getaways across the U.S., organized by region so you can find something within driving distance to keep costs low (or further afield if you're up for the journey).
Top Regional Destinations:
Burlington, vermont.

You don't have to spend a lot of money to enjoy Burlington, Vermont – especially since the best ways to experience it are low-cost or free. Rent bikes and go for a ride on the Burlington Bike Path, which later becomes the Island Line Trail – a stunning pathway over Lake Champlain. You can also stroll Church Street Marketplace, where the Burlington Farmers Market is hosted on Saturdays; sample sweets at Lake Champlain Chocolates; and enjoy a craft beer tasting or two.
Niagara Falls, New York
There's no cost to visit this iconic landmark , and if you want to get up close, you'll find several affordable tours of Niagara Falls – namely boat rides that'll get you up close to the roaring waters. A visit to Niagara Falls, New York, also omits the cost (and hassle) of getting or renewing a passport . Free and low-cost things to do in Niagara Falls include hiking state parks and sampling vinos along the Niagara Wine Trail.
Atlantic City, New Jersey
You can enjoy an affordable weekend in Atlantic City – provided you steer clear of (or don't spend too much time at) the casinos. Instead, explore the beach and boardwalk, whose roots date back to 1870. Other budget-friendly things to do in Atlantic City including visiting Absecon Lighthouse (the tallest in New Jersey) and Lucy the Elephant. If you come here for a romantic getaway , treat yourself and your partner to dinner on the waterfront.
The Poconos, Pennsylvania
Spend as much or as little as you like in the Pocono Mountains. Located in northeastern Pennsylvania, the region's terrain affords a variety of free and low-cost activities amid beautiful scenery, from hiking and biking to fishing and boating. Lake Wallenpaupack, Hickory Run State Park and Lehigh Gorge State Park offer some of the best camping for those who'd like to keep lodging costs low, though you can also find affordable vacation rentals in the area.
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Courtesy of Destination Gettysburg
Gettysburg National Military Park (which also comprises the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center) is free to visit, and there's no cost to explore the Civil War battlefields with a national park ranger. Gettysburg ghost tours – a must for anyone who's interested in the area's haunted history – are relatively affordable, too, as are local hotels , which include options under $200 and $100 per night.
Farm Sanctuary: Watkins Glen, New York
Courtesy of Farm Sanctuary
Farm Sanctuary in the Finger Lakes region of New York is part animal sanctuary, part country retreat – and an ideal location for a weekend escape from New York City . Travelers eager for a break can book a tiny home or cabin and spend time with more than 500 rescued farm animals in Watkins Glen. Nightly rentals start at $250 per night (plus a $25 membership fee) for up to two people in May through December, and include a special tour each morning of your stay. Sample the region's signature rieslings and chardonnays at some of the top wineries in the Finger Lakes during your visit, or hike to waterfalls at Watkins Glen State Park .

Black Hills National Forest and Badlands National Park, South Dakota
This area of the U.S. is home to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and the fascinating caverns of Wind Cave, making it easy to see several iconic attractions in one jaunt. Branson, Missouri

Table Rock Lake State Park, where you can swim, canoe, kayak, fish, hike and bike, as well as Branson Landing, which features a spectacular fountain show at night, are among the free attractions in Branson, Missouri . You can also ride a free trolley around town from March to December. The most expensive activity in Branson might be a visit to Silver Dollar City, though you can often find deals on tickets, like discounted evening rates in the fall. For affordable lodging in Branson , try the Thousand Hills Resort Hotel , which often lists rates around $100 per night.
Indianapolis, Indiana

There are a variety of free things to do in Indianapolis , including the Monon Trail, which connects downtown Indy to the Carmel area, with shops and restaurants along the way; the 250-acre White River State Park, perfect for a picnic lunch; and the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, which connects the city's public spaces. On the first Thursday of every month, the Newfields Art Museum offers free admission (and whether or not you go to the museum, the grounds alone are worth a visit). In the summer, Concerts on the Canal brings free entertainment to the area – just bring your own blanket or lawn chair.
No matter your budget, a visit to the Indianapolis Children's Museum is worth the splurge if traveling with kids – it is the largest children's museum in the world.
Cedar Point: Sandusky, Ohio
Courtesy of Cedar Point
Not only is Cedar Point one of the best amusement parks in the U.S. – and the self-proclaimed Roller Coaster Capital of the World – but a visit here is also relatively cheap when you factor in the affordability of hotels in Sandusky . Keep in mind that, as a seasonal attraction, Cedar Point is typically closed from November to early May.

With 22 free Smithsonian museums including the National Zoo, Washington, D.C. is an obvious choice for a cheap weekend getway. And while many hotels in D.C. are expensive, you can still find affordable accommodations on rental sites like Airbnb and Vrbo.
Gulf Shores, Alabama
Gulf Shores boasts more than 30 miles of white sand beaches , making it one of the best beaches on the Gulf Coast . You don't have to visit during the summer to experience the area's best weather, though: Spring and fall bring temperatures that are still comfortable for sunbathing, swimming and strolling on the sand.
Budget-friendly things to do in Gulf Shores include bike riding at Gulf State Park; casting a line at Gulf State Park Fishing and Education Pier; exploring The Wharf, an entertainment and shopping venue; and visiting the Orange Beach History Museum and the Gulf Shores Museum, both of which are free. At local hotels like the Staybridge Suites Gulf Shores , nightly rates for apartment-style accommodations and free breakfast currently hover around $100 a night.
Massanutten Resort: Massanutten, Virginia
An ideal weekend getaway from Washington, D.C. , Massanutten Resort offers four-season fun, from winter sports like skiing and snowboarding to golf, mountain biking and water park action during warmer months. A la carte fees for many activities allow you to spend as much or as little as you'd like, and while there's a nightly resort fee, it covers access to the indoor and outdoor pools, playgrounds, sports courts (including pickleball), hiking trails and more. Plus, the resort fee doesn't seem so bad when you consider that townhomes and guest rooms are available for less than $150 a night.

Asheville, North Carolina
Krista Rossow | Courtesy of ExploreAsheville.com
Situated within the Blue Ridge Mountains, Asheville is known for its mix of history (Biltmore Estate), nature (the Blue Ridge Mountains) and food (from craft breweries to a flourishing dining scene). Travelers can tackle a number of hikes in Asheville for some scenic – and low-cost – fun. You can also stroll along the 1.7-mile Asheville Urban Trail to learn about the city's unique past, go for a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and explore downtown, where you're bound to come across some of the tiny city's famous street performers. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an easy and relatively affordable day trip from Asheville, too.
Bahia Honda Key, Florida
You don't have to visit Key West – or break the bank – to experience the best of the Florida Keys; in fact, the best beaches in the Florida Keys are not even in Key West. At Bahia Honda State Park, for example, you can swim, rent kayaks and snorkeling gear, or even hop on a boat to snorkel in the Looe Key marine sanctuary reef. Entry fees at Bahia Honda State Park are $8 per vehicle with two to eight passengers. Plus, you can camp here for just $36 per night (not including tax and the utility and reservation fees). Renting a cabin costs about $120 per night plus fees from May through October, and slightly more in the cooler months.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
One of the most affordable beach destinations in the U.S., Myrtle Beach is known for its roster of low-cost or free activities that appeal to travelers of all ages. Explore the mile-long Myrtle Beach Boardwalk (home to the iconic Skywheel) as well as Broadway at the Beach (an entertainment complex), both of which offer live entertainment including music performances and fireworks shows. Vereen Memorial Gardens, just north of the city, is also free to visit. When it comes to Myrtle Beach accommodations , there are affordable options aplenty; the Crown Reef Resort, for example, offers an on-site, year-round water park and rates as low as $92 per night for a family of four.
Polk County, Florida
Courtesy of Visit Central Florida
A vacation in Orlando has its time and place, but if you're on the hunt for a cheap weekend getaway, head to Polk County instead. Here, you can explore stunning (and free) parks and nature preserves such as Bok Tower Gardens, a National Historic Landmark, as well as Bonnet Springs Park. The park connects several attractions, including a kids treehouse, a rooftop bar, a butterfly house, The Florida Children's Museum, botanical gardens and more. Legoland Florida Resort and Peppa Pig Theme Park are close by if you decide to splurge on a theme park visit.
New Orleans
There are more things to do in New Orleans than you could ever accomplish in a weekend, but you can still enjoy a short and cheap trip to The Big Easy. Ogle the historic houses in the Garden District, stroll along iconic Magazine Street, wander through the French Quarter (where you're bound to see street performers), or stop in a local eatery for a famous po'boy sandwich or beignet. For affordable accommodations in New Orleans , look outside of the French Quarter.
South Padre Island, Texas
Courtesy of South Padre Island CVB
Not only does South Padre Island offer 34 miles of coastline and the cleanest beach water in Texas, but it's also ultra-affordable. Low-cost attractions include Sea Turtle, Inc., which is currently building the world's largest sea turtle hospital, and South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. There are also plenty of places to enjoy fishing, one of the island's most popular activities. A visit to the Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site – the last Texas lighthouse open to the public – costs just $5 per adult ($3 for kids). Sandcastle Days, the island's beloved festival that is hosted every October, is also free.
Joshua Tree National Park, California
One of the most beautiful national parks in California , Joshua Tree National Park is also fairly affordable thanks to campgrounds like Jumbo Rocks, where you can enjoy the seclusion of the deserted wilderness. There are more than 100 primitive campsites available here, with reservations required in the busy season from September to May; a maximum of six people can occupy a campsite for just $20 per night (on top of fees to enter the park).
San Luis Obispo, California
Courtesy of Visit SLO CAL
Combining small-town charm with beautiful weather, San Luis Obispo is an ideal weekend getaway from Los Angeles (about 190 miles from the city). With the plethora of outdoor activities here, visitors can enjoy budget-friendly fun like hiking the area's trails, surfing in the ocean, zip lining or horseback riding. For local flavor, visit the Thursday evening farmers market or dine alfresco at one of many downtown patios. The town's free Concerts in the Plaza series features performances by the area's top artists. Beaches await those seeking relaxation in SLO, while wine lovers can explore the region's Edna Valley wineries.
A glitzy getaway in Las Vegas can be yours – and it may be less expensive than you initially imagined. Hotels in Vegas can cost as little as $50 per night on weekdays (plus resort fees), and local attractions like Bellagio Fountains, the Fremont Street Experience, the Las Vegas Sign and Seven Magic Mountains (just outside the city) are all free to visit. This might just mean you'll have some room in your budget for a casino visit, tickets to one of the city's spectacular shows , and/or a tour of the Grand Canyon .
Sedona, Arizona
Courtesy of Sedona Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Bureau
It won't cost you a penny to visit most attractions in Sedona , including Cathedral Rock, Devil's Bridge and Fay Canyon. And while Sedona's spa and wellness resorts are undoubtedly pricey, you can find lodging for less in off-peak months (summer and winter), as well as a variety of vacation rentals year-round.

Olympic National Park is well worth a weekend visit, whether you want to hike, stargaze or explore its more than 70 miles of untouched Pacific Coast shoreline – which include dog-friendly beaches , if your furry friend wants to come along. While here, visit the famous Hoh Rain Forest, Lake Crescent and Rialto Beach. You can even camp within the park for as little as $40 per night for up to 10 people sharing a campsite. Note that you'll have to pay a fee to enter the park.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

Albuquerque is quirky and fun, with an Old Town that features cobblestone streets and adobe-style buildings and is free to explore. Plan a visit during spring or fall for the best weather, then take advantage of local, low-cost festivals: May brings the New Mexico Wine Festival ($25 or less per ticket) to town, or come autumn, you can stop by the famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta (around $15 per person) to witness one of the best hot air balloon festivals in the U.S. Other things to do in Albuquerque include visiting the Petroglyph National Monument, which is free of charge. Opt for a vacation rental rather than a hotel to save some coin.
San Antonio, Texas
San Antonio is an affordable Texas destination brimming with cultural flair, historical significance and free activities. There's no cost to visit iconic attractions like the Alamo or the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, and you won't pay anything to stroll the famous River Walk (though dining at least once here is a must). Another popular activity, narrated river cruises are also cheap, with tickets for less than $15 per person via local operator GO RIO Cruises.

Stowe, Vermont
Stowe may be a popular ski destination, but it's equally appealing in the fall with its abundance of outdoor pursuits. And, obviously, the foliage alone is reason enough to visit. The 68-room Topnotch Resort sits on an expansive 120 acres with views of Mount Mansfield. Hotel activities include horseback riding, ATV tours, biking, wagon rides, and, for something a little more relaxing, a lovely spa.
Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts
Want to escape to a quaint New England seaside village? Look no further than Martha's Vineyard, with its miles of beaches and historic houses. Stay in Edgartown, a former whaling port, and you'll have access to shops, galleries, and restaurants galore. The Christopher is a chic boutique hotel with just 15 rooms that mix modern design with a classic New England aesthetic. For a seamless—and fast (read: no traffic)—trip from the New York area, book a flight on Tradewind Aviation.

There's plenty to do, including hiking, fly-fishing, archery, tennis, and croquet. In 2021, for its 100th anniversary, the hotel was refreshed by celebrated designer Celerie Kemble.

Cape May, New Jersey
Cape May is perhaps the most charming of all of New Jersey's beach towns, thanks to the colorful Victorian-era houses that line its streets. Spend the day at the beach or peruse the shops of the Washington Street pedestrian mall, which is particularly festive in December. Congress Hall is the grande dame in this seaside resort town, and it's been hosting guests since 1816.

Evaluate documentation
A quick tour
and get access to the augmented documentation experience
to get started
🤗 Evaluate provides access to a wide range of evaluation tools. It covers a range of modalities such as text, computer vision, audio, etc. as well as tools to evaluate models or datasets. These tools are split into three categories.
Types of evaluations
There are different aspects of a typical machine learning pipeline that can be evaluated and for each aspect 🤗 Evaluate provides a tool:
- Metric : A metric is used to evaluate a model’s performance and usually involves the model’s predictions as well as some ground truth labels. You can find all integrated metrics at evaluate-metric .
- Comparison : A comparison is used to compare two models. This can for example be done by comparing their predictions to ground truth labels and computing their agreement. You can find all integrated comparisons at evaluate-comparison .
- Measurement : The dataset is as important as the model trained on it. With measurements one can investigate a dataset’s properties. You can find all integrated measurements at evaluate-measurement .
Each of these evaluation modules live on Hugging Face Hub as a Space. They come with an interactive widget and a documentation card documenting its use and limitations. For example accuracy :
Each metric, comparison, and measurement is a separate Python module, but for using any of them, there is a single entry point: evaluate.load() !
Any metric, comparison, or measurement is loaded with the evaluate.load function:
If you want to make sure you are loading the right type of evaluation (especially if there are name clashes) you can explicitly pass the type:
Community modules
Besides the modules implemented in 🤗 Evaluate you can also load any community module by specifying the repository ID of the metric implementation:
See the Creating and Sharing Guide for information about uploading custom metrics.
List available modules
With list_evaluation_modules() you can check what modules are available on the hub. You can also filter for a specific modules and skip community metrics if you want. You can also see additional information such as likes:
Module attributes
All evalution modules come with a range of useful attributes that help to use a module stored in a EvaluationModuleInfo object.
Let’s have a look at a few examples. First, let’s look at the description attribute of the accuracy metric:
You can see that it describes how the metric works in theory. If you use this metric for your work, especially if it is an academic publication you want to reference it properly. For that you can look at the citation attribute:
Before we can apply a metric or other evaluation module to a use-case, we need to know what the input format of the metric is:
Note that features always describe the type of a single input element. In general we will add lists of elements so you can always think of a list around the types in features . Evaluate accepts various input formats (Python lists, NumPy arrays, PyTorch tensors, etc.) and converts them to an appropriate format for storage and computation.
Now that we know how the evaluation module works and what should go in there we want to actually use it! When it comes to computing the actual score there are two main ways to do it:
- Incremental
In the incremental approach the necessary inputs are added to the module with EvaluationModule.add() or EvaluationModule.add_batch() and the score is calculated at the end with EvaluationModule.compute() . Alternatively, one can pass all the inputs at once to compute() . Let’s have a look at the two approaches.
How to compute
The simplest way to calculate the score of an evaluation module is by calling compute() directly with the necessary inputs. Simply pass the inputs as seen in features to the compute() method.
Evaluation modules return the results in a dictionary. However, in some instances you build up the predictions iteratively or in a distributed fashion in which case add() or add_batch() are useful.
Calculate a single metric or a batch of metrics
In many evaluation pipelines you build the predictions iteratively such as in a for-loop. In that case you could store the predictions in a list and at the end pass them to compute() . With add() and add_batch() you can circumvent the step of storing the predictions separately. If you are only creating single predictions at a time you can use add() :
Once you have gathered all predictions you can call compute() to compute the score based on all stored values. When getting predictions and references in batches you can use add_batch() which adds a list elements for later processing. The rest works as with add() :
This is especially useful when you need to get the predictions from your model in batches:
Distributed evaluation
Computing metrics in a distributed environment can be tricky. Metric evaluation is executed in separate Python processes, or nodes, on different subsets of a dataset. Typically, when a metric score is additive ( f(AuB) = f(A) + f(B) ), you can use distributed reduce operations to gather the scores for each subset of the dataset. But when a metric is non-additive ( f(AuB) ≠ f(A) + f(B) ), it’s not that simple. For example, you can’t take the sum of the F1 scores of each data subset as your final metric .
A common way to overcome this issue is to fallback on single process evaluation. The metrics are evaluated on a single GPU, which becomes inefficient.
🤗 Evaluate solves this issue by only computing the final metric on the first node. The predictions and references are computed and provided to the metric separately for each node. These are temporarily stored in an Apache Arrow table, avoiding cluttering the GPU or CPU memory. When you are ready to compute() the final metric, the first node is able to access the predictions and references stored on all the other nodes. Once it has gathered all the predictions and references, compute() will perform the final metric evaluation.
This solution allows 🤗 Evaluate to perform distributed predictions, which is important for evaluation speed in distributed settings. At the same time, you can also use complex non-additive metrics without wasting valuable GPU or CPU memory.
Combining several evaluations
Often one wants to not only evaluate a single metric but a range of different metrics capturing different aspects of a model. E.g. for classification it is usually a good idea to compute F1-score, recall, and precision in addition to accuracy to get a better picture of model performance. Naturally, you can load a bunch of metrics and call them sequentially. However, a more convenient way is to use the combine() function to bundle them together:
The combine function accepts both the list of names of the metrics as well as an instantiated modules. The compute call then computes each metric:
Save and push to the Hub
Saving and sharing evaluation results is an important step. We provide the evaluate.save() function to easily save metrics results. You can either pass a specific filename or a directory. In the latter case, the results are saved in a file with an automatically created file name. Besides the directory or file name, the function takes any key-value pairs as inputs and stores them in a JSON file.
The content of the JSON file look like the following:
In addition to the specified fields, it also contains useful system information for reproducing the results.
Besides storing the results locally, you should report them on the model’s repository on the Hub. With the evaluate.push_to_hub() function, you can easily report evaluation results to the model’s repository:
The evaluate.evaluator() provides automated evaluation and only requires a model, dataset, metric in contrast to the metrics in EvaluationModule s that require the model’s predictions. As such it is easier to evaluate a model on a dataset with a given metric as the inference is handled internally. To make that possible it uses the pipeline abstraction from transformers . However, you can use your own framework as long as it follows the pipeline interface.
To make an evaluation with the evaluator let’s load a transformers pipeline (but you can pass your own custom inference class for any framework as long as it follows the pipeline call API) with an model trained on IMDb, the IMDb test split and the accuracy metric.
Then you can create an evaluator for text classification and pass the three objects to the compute() method. With the label mapping evaluate provides a method to align the pipeline outputs with the label column in the dataset:
Calculating the value of the metric alone is often not enough to know if a model performs significantly better than another one. With bootstrapping evaluate computes confidence intervals and the standard error which helps estimate how stable a score is:
The evaluator expects a "text" and "label" column for the data input. If your dataset differs you can provide the columns with the keywords input_column="text" and label_column="label" . Currently only "text-classification" is supported with more tasks being added in the future.
Visualization
When comparing several models, sometimes it’s hard to spot the differences in their performance simply by looking at their scores. Also often there is not a single best model but there are trade-offs between e.g. latency and accuracy as larger models might have better performance but are also slower. We are gradually adding different visualization approaches, such as plots, to make choosing the best model for a use-case easier.
For instance, if you have a list of results from multiple models (as dictionaries), you can feed them into the radar_plot() function:
Which lets you visually compare the 4 models and choose the optimal one for you, based on one or several metrics:
Running evaluation on a suite of tasks
It can be useful to evaluate models on a variety of different tasks to understand their downstream performance. The EvaluationSuite enables evaluation of models on a collection of tasks. Tasks can be constructed as ( evaluator , dataset, metric) tuples and passed to an EvaluationSuite stored on the Hugging Face Hub as a Space, or locally as a Python script. See the evaluator documentation for a list of currently supported tasks.
EvaluationSuite scripts can be defined as follows, and supports Python code for data preprocessing.
Evaluation can be run by loading the EvaluationSuite and calling run() method with a model or pipeline.

New York City, New York
It might seem too big a city to accommodate a last-minute getaway trip, but never fear - because of its sheer number of attractions, New York City is actually an ideal spontaneous trip destination! It's a city of contrasts, where the 24-hour hustle and bustle balances the oases of Central Park and the quietly elegant Hudson River. Stick to one or two fun neighborhoods and you'll get your fill of the Big Apple. Short for "South of Houston"; SoHo is New York's artistic sanctuary and a fantastic area to shop, eat or just hang out. Located in lower Manhattan, it's an eclectic assortment of lofts, combining residential, commercial and gallery space. In the 1960s, artists started inhabiting lofts in the area, which were actually vacated sweatshops.
Today, these live-work units sell for millions of dollars. People are drawn to Greenwich Village by the local diversity, funky shopping, top-notch restaurants and fascinating Old New York architecture. Washington Square is one of the most romantic neighborhoods in the city. Tree-lined streets, pretty brick houses, jazz clubs, coffeehouses and sidewalk cafes - you'll find them all in the Village. Tips for a last-minute getaway: you can most easily snag theater tickets during January and February, but finding a good table at a restaurant can be easier in July and August, when New Yorkers tend to escape the city. Visit New York City between the first of the year and early April for great bargains.

R Markdown Quick Tour
Creating documents with R Markdown starts with an .Rmd file that contains a combination of markdown (content with simple text formatting) and R code chunks. The .Rmd file is fed to knitr , which executes all of the R code chunks and creates a new markdown (.md) document which includes the R code and its output.
The markdown file generated by knitr is then processed by pandoc which is responsible for creating a finished web page, PDF, MS Word document, slide show, handout, book, dashboard, package vignette or other format.
This may sound complicated, but R Markdown makes it extremely simple by encapsulating all of the above processing into a single render function. Better still, RStudio includes a “Knit” button that enables you to render an .Rmd and preview it using a single click or keyboard shortcut.
Installation
You can install the R Markdown package from CRAN as follows:
You can open a new .Rmd file in the RStudio IDE by going to File > New File > R Markdown…
Markdown Basics
Markdown is a simple formatting language designed to make authoring content easy for everyone. Rather than write in complex markup code (e.g. HTML or LaTex), you write in plain text with formatting cues. Pandoc uses these cues to turn your document into attractive output. For example, the file on the left shows basic Markdown and the resulting output on the right:
R Code Chunks
Within an R Markdown file, R Code Chunks can be embedded with the native Markdown syntax for fenced code regions. For example, the following code chunk computes a data summary and renders a plot as a PNG image:
Inline R Code
You can also evaluate R expressions inline by enclosing the expression within a single back-tick qualified with ‘r’. For example, the following code embeds R results as text in the output at right
Rendering Output
There are two ways to render an R Markdown document into its final output format. If you are using RStudio, then the “Knit” button (Ctrl+Shift+K) will render the document and display a preview of it.
If you are not using RStudio then you simply need to call the rmarkdown::render function, for example:
Note that both methods use the same mechanism; RStudio’s “Knit” button calls rmarkdown::render() under the hood.
Using Parameters
R Markdown documents can contain a metadata section that includes title, author, and date information as well as options for customizing output. For example, this metadata included at the top of an .Rmd file adds a table of contents and chooses a different HTML theme:
You can add a params: field to the metadata to provide a list of values for your document to use. R Markdown will make the list available as params within any R code chunk in the report. For example, the file below takes a filename as a parameter and uses the name to read in a data set.
Parameters let you quickly apply your data set to new data sets, models, and parameters. You can set new values for the parameters when you call rmarkdown::render() ,
as well as when you press the “Knit” button:
Output Formats
You can create many types of output from a single .Rmd file. R Markdown has built in support for HTML, PDF, MS_Word, ODT, RTF, Markdown, and Github flavored Markdown documents; Beamer, slidy.js, ioslides, and reveal.js slideshows; and websites, dashboards, books, handouts, package vignettes, and Shiny apps. These formats can be specified in metadata, for example:
And you can set sub-options to customize each formats:
Multiple formats can be specified in metadata:
If you are using rmarkdown::render then you can pass a format name to render to select from the available formats. For example:
You can also render all formats defined in an input file with:

Quick tour of the Power Query M formula language
- 4 contributors
This quick tour describes creating Power Query M formula language queries.
M is a case-sensitive language.
Create a query with the Power Query editor
To create an advanced query, you use the Power Query advanced editor . A mashup query is composed of variables, expressions, and values encapsulated by a let expression. A variable can contain spaces by using the # identifier with the name in quotes as in #"Variable name" .
A let expression follows this structure:
To create an M query in the advanced editor, you follow this basic process:
Create a series of query formula steps that start with the let statement. Each step is defined by a step variable name. An M variable can include spaces by using the # character as #"Step Name" . A formula step can be a custom formula. Note that the Power Query formula language is case sensitive.
Each query formula step builds upon a previous step by referring to a step by its variable name.
Output a query formula step using the in statement. Generally, the last query step is used as the in final data set result.
To learn more about expressions and values, go to Expressions, values, and let expression .
Simple Power Query M formula steps
Let's assume you created the following transform in the Power Query editor to convert product names to the appropriate case, in this instance, to all initial capitalization.
To begin with, you have a table that looks like this:
And, you want to capitalize the first letter in each word in the Item column to produce the following table:
The M formula steps to project the original table into the results table look like this in the Power Query advanced editor:
Here's the code you can paste into the Power Query advanced editor:
Let’s review each formula step.
Orders : Create a table with data for Orders.
#"Capitalized Each Word" : To capitalize each word, you use Table.TransformColumns .
in #"Capitalized Each Word" : Output the table with the first letter of each word capitalized.

Quick-dry clothing is my most reliable travel companion, keeping me comfortable and dry whether I'm visiting Vietnam in monsoon season or sightseeing during a French heatwave. A long-time activewear staple thanks to its moisture-wicking qualities, it’s become increasingly popular in versatile, travel-friendly clothing, allowing you to effortlessly transition from a morning hike to a poolside lunch without having to deal with damp clothes or stop by the hotel to change.
“Polyester is a hydrophobic fiber which means it does not easily absorb moisture,” says Sean Cormier, a textile expert and Associate Professor and Chair of the Textile Development & Marketing Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology. He touts polyester and nylon as two of the most reliable quick-dry fabrics, pointing out their potential antimicrobial benefits as a perk for travelers who may need to wear clothes multiple times between washes.
Quick-dry clothing comes in an array of fabrics, from synthetics like polyester and nylon to natural fibers like wool, all of which are designed to wick away moisture and keep you feeling fresh, no matter what the weather brings.
To help you find the most versatile and comfortable quick-dry clothing for your next adventure, we researched dozens of pieces from top brands, including several that have earned permanent real estate in my suitcase as a travel writer. Whether you prefer athletic shorts for keeping cool on the trail or breezy tops for sweat-free strolls around the city, there’s something for everyone on this list.
Vuori Miles Ankle Pants
Stretchy and seamless, these versatile pants are easy to dress up or down for any occasion.
The slash pockets don’t offer a secure closure for your valuables.
Every traveler needs a pair of stretchy yet stylish pants — personally, I’m always on the hunt for a pair with a generous elastic waistband, for those busy travel days when jeans (or anything with a zipper, for that matter) are simply out of the question. Enter: the Vuori Miles Ankle Pant, which I’ve reached for on several recent long-haul flights. They’re stretchy enough to move with me through the airport (and to comfortably sleep in on the plane), and the streamlined silhouette keeps me feeling put-together once I arrive at my destination. It doesn’t hurt that they’re ultra-quick-drying, breathable, and moisture-wicking, too, so I never have to worry about feeling sticky or sweaty — they stayed dry through a sweltering bus ride along Columbia’s northern coast, and again during a stuffy subway commute back home a few days later.
I also love that they’re made from recycled material, but that they feel sleeker than classic performance wear — and they certainly stand up to the other yoga and hiking pants in my closet. While the slash pockets are less secure than a zippered alternative, they’re part of what makes this design versatile enough to wear for both workouts and a day at the museum.

Daise Paige Midi Dress
This breezy, everyday dress boasts antimicrobial properties and built-in sun protection.
It’s only available in black, and the bamboo fibers are prone to shrinking if you put it in the dryer.
Breathable and ultra-lightweight, this midi-dress is the perfect LBD to take you from the beach to drinks at the hotel bar. It’s made from a super-soft bamboo jersey blend which is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, meaning it’s free of any harmful substances. Bamboo is a naturally breezy, porous fiber that dries relatively quickly on its own; if you do need to toss it in the dryer, be sure to tumble dry low, as heat can lead to shrinkage.
This cozy blend takes bamboo’s natural quick-drying abilities to the next level with moisture-wicking properties, so there’s no need to worry about working up a sweat under the sun. To that end, the fabric really stands out for its built-in UV protection, boasting a UPF 50+ rating that protects your skin from nearly 98 percent of the sun’s damaging rays. We love that the cap sleeves and mock neck offer a little extra coverage, while the side-slits keep it feeling summery and sexy.
The Details: XS to XL | Bamboo, viscose, cotton, spandex
Best Hoodie
Alpine parrot arroyo sun hoodie.
This comfortable hoodie features built-in sun protection and is designed for a wide range of body shapes and sizes.
It’s only available in two colors.
Alpine Parrot specializes in crafting outdoor apparel in inclusive sizes with a focus on ethnic diversity as part of their mission to help everybody enjoy the great outdoors. They make technical clothing for sizes 14 to 30, and the Arroyo Sun Hoodie is one of our favorite pieces. The hoodie is thoughtfully designed in two different styles, meant to accommodate smaller and larger busts (Coastal Fit and Forest Fit, respectively) — both are available in a soft gray or vibrant blue.
The lightweight fabric is naturally cooling and features four-way stretch to easily move with you, making this a perfect piece for everything from camping to gardening. Better yet, the quick-drying polyester material boasts UPF 50+ protection, so you can enjoy your time in the sun more safely. Design details like a spacious kangaroo front pocket, thumbholes to keep out the cold (or the sun), and buttons to customize the amount of chest coverage help to keep you comfortable on any adventure.
The Details: 1X to 5X | Polyester
Best Shorts
Rei co-op trailmade shorts.
These durable, water-repellent shorts boast six pockets to keep everything within easy reach while you’re on the go.
They can ride up at times.
Say hello to your new favorite shorts for just about everything. While they’re definitely sporty in style, these shorts hit at just the right mid-thigh length to feel both flattering and functional for all sorts of active or casual outings. With six pockets, you can ditch the fanny pack and go hands-free while hitting the trails or biking to the beach: two drop-in front pockets are deep enough to store your phone and wallet (or even a small water bottle), while two rear drop pockets can fit snacks or other valuables, and two front envelope pockets offer secure closures for headphones, keys, and more.
The durable, swishy fabric is abrasion-resistant, so it won’t snag on rocks or trees while you’re hiking through national parks. The material itself is incredibly lightweight and stretchy, with UPF 50+ protection and a water-repellent finish — perfect for when you need a cool-down swim after a hot hike.
The Details: XS to 3X | Nylon, spandex, recycled polyester
Best Tank Top
Athleta ultimate muscle tank.
This flowy, breathable top is perfect for keeping cool during high-impact workouts or hot summer days.
The cropped fit and sheer fabric may not offer enough coverage for everyone’s preferences.
Whether you’re giving your all during a HIIT class or taking a tennis lesson on vacation, you can feel confident that this trendy tank will keep you in peak performance mode. It’s made from a blend of breathable nylon and spandex, meaning there’s plenty of stretch and the material is designed to air out and dry in a flash. An eye-catching mesh panel on the back allows for ample air flow and adds an enticing design element, although those who prefer a bit more coverage may not love that aspect. On the flip side, the crew neck provides a fair amount of chest coverage.
The Details: 2XS to 3X | Nylon, spandex
Best Leggings
Lululemon wunder train hi-rise tight 25".
These flattering leggings are made from a breathable, cooling fabric that stays in place through high-impact workouts, busy travel days, and more.
Given their compressive feel, these may be better suited to working out and running errands than lounging around the house.
Designed to keep you cool as you work up a sweat, these cozy, compressive leggings from Lululemon’s Wunder Train line are a must-have for fitness enthusiasts and frequent fliers alike. The brand’s ultra-quick-drying proprietary Everlux fabric is soft and cooling, with just enough compression to feel like they’re hugging you in all the right places.
They’re made from a stretchy blend of nylon and elastane that stays in place all day long, thanks to an adjustable internal drawcord that keeps the wide, high-rise waistband secure. There’s even a discreet waistband pocket, where you can safely tuck small essentials like credit cards or room keys. While they’re soft and stretchy enough to comfortably move around in, these feel better suited to more active pursuits than low-key lounging.
The Details: 0 to 20 | Nylon, lycra elastane
Best Jacket
Rains jacket.
This sleek, unisex jacket is top-of-the-line windproof, waterproof outerwear.
The length is great for a rain jacket, but can get in the way if you’re wearing it for more high-impact activities.
Perhaps no item of clothing has made me feel as invincible in the face of inclement weather as this Rains Jacket, borrowed from a friend during a hike in Normandy during a summer storm. I felt giddy as I watched the rain pelt and roll off my coat, luxuriating in how toasty and dry it remained on the inside. A short while after the clouds had passed, the water had already beaded off, and it was dry enough to tuck back into my bag.
The jacket, which boasts a water column pressure of 4,000mm, is the perfect lightweight layer — it’s elegant, easily packable, and ready to handle spring showers thanks to its quick-drying PU coating. The length is both a perk and a potential pitfall, as it helps protect you from the elements, but somewhat restricts your freedom of movement when closed.
The Details: XS to 2XL | Polyester
Best Sports Bra
Girlfriend collective tommy cropped bra.
Girlfriend Collective
This flattering bra is supportive and stylish enough to wear for a workout or a night on the town.
The straps aren’t adjustable.
Girlfriend Collective has been my go-to athleisure brand for years, and the Tommy Bra is a good example of why: it’s supportive enough to jog, hike, or do yoga in, but the trendy square neckline, scoop back, and flattering compressive fit also feel cool enough to pair with a skirt and tall boots for a night out. I’m always on the hunt for versatile pieces to travel with, so this is a perfect two-in-one; plus, the material wicks away sweat and dries easily, so I can transition comfortably between activities within the same day.
The straps aren’t adjustable, so wriggling into this can be tricky if you’re already sweaty — but once it’s on, it’s comfortable and offers excellent support. The smooth, double-lined fabric is made from recycled plastic bottles, and boasts four-way stretch for easy movement. I’m partial to the neutral tones for maximizing their outfit potential, but I love that it comes in jewel tones and seasonal shades, too, so it’s easy for everyone to find an option that matches their style (and maybe even their matching leggings ).
The Details: 2XS to 6XL | Recycled plastic bottles, spandex
Feetures High Performance Ultra Light Socks
These lightweight socks keep feet cool and dry in warm weather.
These aren’t particularly cushy, but that’s typically in the best interest of those with sweaty feet.
Our team tested 97 pairs of socks to narrow down the best ones for every occasion, and the Feetures High Performance Ultra Light Ankle Sock easily earned our top pick for anyone dealing with sweaty feet. They’re thin and lightweight, taking up next to no room in your suitcase.
While they don’t offer much in the way of cushioning, they’re designed to mold to the natural contour of your feet, providing a comfortable fit that you can walk around in all day long. We found that the breathable merino wool blend kept our feet cool while at the gym and while running, and the socks never bunched or slid down. We also appreciated that they’re available in a wide range of sizes.
The Details: S to XL | Super-fine merino wool, nylon, polyester, lycra
Best T-shirt
Athleta with ease tee.
Drapey and super-soft, this tee is breathable enough for workouts and warm-weather travel.
It’s designed to have a roomy fit — size down if you prefer a more fitted silhouette.
Breezy and breathable, this is one of the best travel tees around. It’s lightweight and packable, and the drapey silhouette is versatile enough to pull double duty: throw it on with jeans and sandals for a day of sightseeing, or wear it to pilates. Either way, you’ll feel as cool as you look thanks to the moisture-wicking, quick-drying Tencel blend. It’s baby soft and made from partly recycled materials, and hits lower in the back for added coverage. We love that it comes in a wide range of sizes, including petite and tall sizing to help you find your perfect fit.
The Details: 2XS to 3X | Recycled polyester, Tencel modal, elastane
Best Long-sleeve Shirt
Lands' end women's crew neck rash guard upf 50.
Landsâ End
This waterproof top works as a beach cover-up and a swim tee.
It’s less breathable than an everyday long-sleeve top, but its lightweight construction keeps you from overheating.
While lycra would have once been relegated to workout and swim apparel, this stylish and functional long-sleeve tee now rivals something Skims would market as a going-out top. It’s simple and subtle enough to wear for everyday errands and travel, but it's true draw is as a swim tee and beach cover-up. If you’re heading on a tropical getaway and plan to indulge in some R&R by the pool or beach, this top offers superior protection without sacrificing style.
It’s soft, lightweight, and stretchy for maximum comfort. The moisture-wicking fabric even boasts UPF 50+ sun protection, and dries quickly enough to wear straight from the water to lunch by the pool. Better yet, it comes in a rainbow of vibrant jewel tones and a wide range of inclusive sizes, including petite, long, plus size, and long plus.
The Details: XS to XL | Nylon, lycra spandex
Best Sweater
Quince eco-knit milano stitch mock neck pullover.
Ultra-chic and sophisticated, this sweater will keep you cool even in muggy weather.
The elevated design dries impressively fast, but not at the same speed as performance wear designed for athletic use.
If you’re looking for a chic, timeless layer to elevate your travel wardrobe, look no further than the Quince Eco-Knit Milano Stitch Mock Neck Pullover. The design is simple yet sophisticated — it’s the ideal unfussy and lightweight layer to wear on the plane, or while sipping a coffee at a Parisian cafe.
The soft material is a blend of Lenzing Ecovero, a sustainably-sourced viscose fiber, as well as quick-drying polyester and nylon, which add just the right amount of stretch. While this material won’t dry as quickly as some activewear, it’s naturally designed to wick away moisture and keep you feeling comfortable. We love that it’s machine washable and easy to pair with anything in your closet.
The Details: XS to XL | Lenzing Ecovero, polyester, nylon
Tips for Buying Quick-dry Clothing
Choose the best fabrics for your needs.
Quick-dry clothing comes in an array of fabrics, some of which dry more rapidly than others. If you’re looking for pieces to primarily wear while working out, Cormier suggests synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, which are often used in activewear because of their antimicrobial properties. Natural fibers like wool also dry quickly, and are ideal for more everyday or elevated pieces for travel.
Prioritize versatility
Versatility is always key while traveling, as being able to mix-and-match or layer your clothing allows you to make the most of the space in your suitcase. Look for pieces in neutral colors and streamlined silhouettes that will be easy to style in different ways — think a breezy tee that can be worn for a workout, or with jeans for a laid-back daytime look. Pieces with antimicrobial properties are particularly helpful here, as they’ll stay fresh longer between washes while you’re on the road.
Quick-dry clothing will come in handy whenever you’ll be at risk of getting damp or sweaty. The moisture-wicking properties that typically go along with it will help keep you feeling cool and dry, whether you’re running to catch a flight or heading to a spin class.
Given that most quick-dry clothing skews more casual, Cormier suggests wearing it for activities where you’re likely to work up a sweat, such as hiking, running, playing tennis, or golfing.
Given that the majority of quick-dry clothing is made from synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon, it’s typically safe to machine wash them with like-colors and, if needed, tumble dry on low. However, certain pieces may require hand washing if they’re more delicate, while others need to be air dried in order to prevent potential heat shrinkage. Be sure to always check the care label on your individual garment to ensure you’re keeping your clothing in optimal condition.

Power Rankings: Zurich Classic of New Orleans
Power Rankings
Change Text Size
From a two-tournament week to a two-man tournament. That’s the transition to this week’s Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Numerous golfers from both the Corales Puntacana Championship and the RBC Heritage have reunited to form 80 partnerships at TPC Louisiana south of New Orleans. An explanation of the format, a review of the course, what’s at stake, an early look at the weather and more details are below.
OTHER TEAMS CONSIDERED
- Doug Ghim and Chan Kim
- Luke List and Henrik Norlander
- Davis Thompson and Andrew Novak
- Thomas Detry and Robert MacIntyre
- Parker Coody and Pierceson Coody
Since the first edition of the Zurich Classic as a team competition in 2017, a common curiosity has been how the two-man collaborations are formed. While PGA TOUR membership status plays a role in the field construct to a certain extent, not all teams are as simply understood as the three pairs of brothers who have joined forces this week – Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick, Nicolai and Rasmus Højgaard and TOUR rookies Parker and Pierceson Coody. The last two pairs are twins, too.
Fan interest in the relationships always varies wildly, and that’s always part of the fun, but one of the more fascinating storylines is the connection between 2022-23 PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year Eric Cole and one-time PGA TOUR winner Russ Cochran. The 65-year-old lefty is making his 600th career PGA TOUR start and first in 11 years. Cochran’s son, Reed, is Cole’s caddie, so it’ll be a family affair for the milestone.
Official World Golf Ranking points are not distributed for this tournament but the start does not contribute to divisors, so it’s a free play. Meanwhile, each member of the winning team will receive 400 FedExCup points (i.e., the average between 500 and 300 reserved for first and second place, respectively). He’s also credited with an official PGA TOUR victory that will yield exemptions into next month’s PGA Championship and the 2025 editions of The Sentry and THE PLAYERS Championship. Each also will be exempt as a TOUR member in the winners category through 2026.
To prevail, the winning team will navigate the first and third rounds of better ball and the second and final rounds of alternate shot. The 36-hole cut will be low 33 teams and ties.
TPC Louisiana is unchanged as it concerns distance and turf conditions. It’s a stock par 72 that tips at 7,425 yards. Overseeded Bermudagrass greens can reach 12½ feet on the Stimpmeter, while the only layer of rough is not overseeded and trimmed to 2 inches.
Favorable weather throughout is expected, thus TPC Louisiana should present its best self. Perfect conditions on Thursday should give at least one team a reasonable look at the tournament record of 59 with which Cantlay and Schauffele opened their wire-to-wire victory in 2022. Winds will freshen on Friday and remain moderate in their push from the south for the remainder. Daytime temperatures will climb into the 80s.
The traditional top-10 exemptions into next week’s THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson are reserved for golfers among the top five teams and ties at the Zurich Classic.
NOTE: ShotLink is not utilized for this tournament.
