He spoke Spanish, English, Italian, French and German. The only issue we had was the amount of boats on the water and every single one followed the whales and didn’t cut their engines to avoid propeller strikes. As wonderful as it was to see them, it was less wonderful to watch them being chased each time they surfaced. The island was great, lunch was nice. Worst excursion experience ever. 30 minutes late to pick us up in the morning and then they dropped us off at a gas station to wait for another van to pick us up with my 2 children. Then we get in the next van and we were told we couldn't sit in 4 seats because we had 2 kids we had to sit in 3 seats, so for a 2 hrs drive my 7 year old had to sit on our laps or floor with not enough seat belts. The entire trip was clearly a ploy to give their friends and family as vendors money. We stopped at a store along the way for no reason when we were already late for our 9am boat (according to what I booked). When I contact the tour operator on what's whatsapp, he made it seem like this was all normal and I was in the wrong. We finally made it to our destination at almost 11am. We were supposed to be picked up at 7am. The whale watching was good that's about all I can say but that was a fraction of the trip. I booked a half day (4-6 hr) whale watching tour with round trip transportation and lunch that is what it said on listing. When we were done with whales we stopped at an island where they tried to sell us drinks, photos with animals and we had to walk through a market. No lunch though when we asked when lunch would be they said at the next stop which confused us because we thought we would be going home after the island? We took another boat ride to a port, took a long open air bus ride where I asked the tour guide about us booking a half day excursion and he said no you can't go home the tour wasn't over. When we reached our next stop at a ranch, it was legitimately someone's house where they made rice, beans chicken etc and that was our lunch. I started speaking to multiple people and they had booked only whale watching too, children, elderly people all dressed for whale watching boat tour, just wait next were forced to ride horribly mistreated horses up and down a mountain, my children have never ridden a horse and it was very steep terrain. Then we get to the end of the trail where we had to hike down a mountain in flip flops and crocs and bathing suits (again we only booked whale watching). We reached a waterfall which was pretty but had very slippery sharp rocks under the water and muddy rocks around the water as well, one of us slipped and hit our knee and it bled and swelled. We were not wearning footwear for hiking or goin in the water. We then had to hike back up the mountain wet with slippery sandals, and it's a very steep climb, an older couple with a cane had to take numerous breaks, my mom would never have been able to partake in this never ending ridiculous excursion, and it would have been nice if we got only what we booked and not forced to partake in activities to get their friends extra tips. I called the operator again and he didn't speak much English and said this is a full day tour there's nothing they can do, its not a private tour its shared, like they could make us do whatever because it was a shared tour?! Our guide said complain to the tour company it's not his problem. We had to tip the very nice horse people (they did good but we weren't prepared for this activity) and then didn't have enough for the boat people. This entire excursion was a joke, multiple people were bamboozled into a tour 3 times as long and had to do activities they didn't sign up for. We didn't get home until 8:30pm! We had a dinner reservation we missed and we had started waiting for this tour at 7am! I am surprised more people didn't get hurt, as no one seemed to be prepare for a hike. My children ate only bread from 7am to 8:30pm because we didn't get a choice in lunch. We were all exhausted and sore and were basically held hostage doing an excursion we never wanted. Keep in mind I can normally put up with some disappointments but what happened yesterday was terrible and if you are like me you come to the page to gain information on what companies to use etc. We used Shilling Tours and they had great reviews We went on a 6 in one excursion yesterday for 7 people and it was not anything like what we were told. And all of us were extremely disappointed We had Roberto as our interpreter and photographer and he was AMAZING however everything else was a huge disappointment I was told it would be a big boat with adequate facilities, with an open bar all day, and snacks What we got was a small very crappy boat with no bathroom no where to lay out and relax. The boat was terribly rough. Several of our group has had surgeries and the roughness of the boat hurt them horribly. I finally talked to Roberto and he asked the driver to slow down. The pictures on their website are very misleading. I emailed back and forth multiple times and asked tons of questions so it’s not like I didn’t make sure we were getting what I asked for. Basically I was lied to. We only 1 bottle of water per person and no snacks and no open bar! What makes them think 1 bottle of water will be enough to make it 8 hours???? We had to buy our own water after that. The only other drink options was beer or coke. To make it worse I got a phone call the day before and was told there would be rum too. No snacks and no open bar at all. We had to buy rum drinks on Sonoa island. We were told there would be a lobster lunch and got chicken and fish. We have done many excursions in so many other countries but this was by far the worst experience ever. We started the day at 7:30 from the hotel going to a meeting point where we were transferred twice in different vehicles. When we got to the boat same experience we were all loaded on one boat of about 30 but they decided we needed to cram more people on another boat so was removed off of that one to the other that already had at least 30 on it. We finally left 3 hours later on the boat packed like sardines. Get to the snorkeling spot and was told we only have 30 minutes now to snorkel because of all the delay so by the time all 60 people unloaded to snorkel and I was ready to get in they told everyone to get out of the water heading to the island. Upon arriving out a ways from the island we anchored where they had to send 3 different boats out to get all the people off the boat which again packed like sardines and took for ever to finally get on the island. We had 2 hrs 30 min to spend on the island where the bar was setup like what you would consider in the states like a kids lemonade stand. The alcoholic drinks were for the most part premade. Also the cups given for water or awful sangria was in small Dixie cups! They did have two bottles of alcohol and the beer did not show up until 1 hour after being on the island. The sand was extremely hot and the ocean was so full of large rocks that you couldn’t get out farther than knee deep water which we didn’t experience either at our resort in Punta Cana. There was no alcohol on the boat at all to or from the island. The restrooms on the boat had no way to flush so they were pretty bad by the time we reached the island. All we wanted was a fun filled day of snorkeling and beach time but quite honestly the time for the trip could not come fast enough as we were so upset and disappointed to spend the money on a very miserable excursion. Waste of money and to be quite honest feel like we should be refunded our money. I am certainly not the guy that is looking for anything free in life but this was ridiculous. However this tour was incredibly chaotic from the very poor communication of finding the bus picking us up from the hotel to getting to the drop off location where no one knew what was going on. The weather was HORRIBLE (while I get they cannot control that they did said they would cancel/reschedule if it was) everyone was throwing up on board, not only were the waves flooding the boat it was pouring rain too making it hard to see the whales. The boat was also way overcrowded. Trying to figure out which island people are going to and where we were going for lunch was a disaster. It was also hours longer than what we expected. Another review posted on here sounded just like the same experience we had. As much as we loved seeing the whales I would have rather stayed at the resort and went else where to see whales. My husband booked this snorkeling excursion for for a fun getaway from the hotel through Trip Advisor. It was midway through our vacation and we were looking forward to it. The good.... the crew was friendly, hardworking and polite. The captain had driven boats for 27 years, so we felt safe on the large boat under his guidance. Once we arrived at the beach for lunch, the water was very pretty. The bad.... When snorkeling, they make you wear a life jacket the entire time. This has never been our experience on any excursion, anywhere. While I appreciate safety, maybe they should base it on swimming ability. (and yes, the water was calm) The belt of the life jacket was cutting into my neck the entire time to the point that it hindered my breathing through the snorkel (and we had brought our own good snorkels and masks) My husband was so frustrated, he just went back to the boat, and most others quit snorkeling and just sat on the life jacket. Maybe instead of just sitting in the boat, the staff could have been active watching the snorkelers to make sure they were okay, and not on their phones, or asleep; then the participants would not have to wear life jackets. When snorkeling, you have to stay within 10-12 feet of the boat the entire time. They do not want you anywhere else. If there are fish there, that is great; if not, too bad. We looked at the same 10 black fish the entire 45 minutes in the water. While we were snorkeling, the other half of the boat went scuba diving. Part beginners, part advanced. The advanced group did not see 1 single fish. The beginners were with us. Pretty boring experience. The ugly....After snorkeling, we headed to the island for lunch. The snorkeling group would eat, while the diving group went on a second dive. Meaning we would be there an awfully long time. To get to the island, the large boat stops, and puts the passengers in a small boat to shuttle in. They combined us with another large boat. This put 28 people in a small pontoon boat to get to the shore. I cannot tell you how many times we almost tipped over. No life jackets required for that part. Even though we were moving toward shallower water, this was not safe. Once on shore, of course other people were already there. There were plenty of lounge chairs, but only shade enough for about 5. Lunch was served buffet style. We started eating. A nice family from Germany that spoke English sat down across from us. As we chatted, the lady pulled a live white maggot out of her spaghetti and put it on the table. I almost lost it. My husband and I promptly quit eating; although we did not have the spaghetti. We had to wait another 2 hours after that for the scuba group to get back and for them to eat before we could leave the island. We were shuttled back out, and given rum drinks on the boat back to the dock before going to the hotel. Ruined trip....My husband got sick that night. I became ill the next day. The rest of our trip was ruined. All remaining 4 days. We could not eat; could hardly even drink water. I lost 7 pounds between Thursday and Sunday morning, and I am not a big person at all. We arrived home Saturday night and were at Rapid Med Sunday getting bloodwork tested and IV fluids. Our first solid meal was Thursday (a week from the Thursday I got sick) We are still waiting on tests to see if we have a parasite. Although we did not see anything in our food, clearly it may have been maggot eggs, or poor handling of the food that made us sick. We always go on excursions, and have been to at least 20 different countries plus the Caribbean the past 25 years in row, and this has never happened to us. The communication from the provider was not so great. that is why only 3 stars. best part of the tour was the rum factory, where you get to taste 8 types of rum. Unfortunately, this one falls into the latter category. I have purposefully waited a few days before writing this review because I wanted to be fair and factual. We booked the Full Day Whale Watching Tour in Samana Bay from Punta Cana through Viator tours but the tour operator was Shelting Tours. The Good Part: • We managed to see some of the best whale watching we’ve ever experienced. This lasted about 30-45 minutes and it was up close showing mother and baby and I think we even saw the father at some point. We took some very nice pictures and video so we could relive it later on. • Also, overall, the staff was very friendly. The Bad Part: • Speaking of the boat, it was very nice but certainly overcrowded. There were some people that didn’t even have a seat so they had to stand for most of the trip. We also had a few situations where people were blocking our view, so we missed some of the action. Of all the other boats we saw that day, ours was the most crowded. • There are many different tour packages offering a variety of activities thrown in with the whale watching as well as the duration of the tours. We chose the 8-hour version by Shelting tours that advertised to last about 8 hours and it included transportation on a comfortable air conditioned coach bus, whale watching, and lunch at Bacardi Island and a brief time on Bacardi beach. Some of the other tours ranged from 10-14 hours and included horseback riding, visiting waterfalls and other excursions. We opted for the shorter trip because we simply didn’t want to be gone that long. But here’s how it actually played out... We were picked up at our hotel at around 6:40am. At the security gate, not the lobby as they had promised in the advertisement. This meant we had to get the hotel to give us a ride to the gate. The drive from the hotel to the boat was about 75 miles and since there were several stops and waits along the way, we arrived at the boat dock 2 hours and 45 minutes later. There were stops literally along the side of a major road where the person in charge opened the door, called some names and pointed to another bus pulled off of the road near us… not exactly a comfortable experience for those pulled off and directed onto another bus. The “comfortable” coach bus we were promised was an older bus that seemed to have been designed for children with very narrow and small seats. Every seat was taken, including an extra jump seat by the door. Not the “Comfortable Coach” that was advertised. • When we arrived, we were dropped off at a dirt lot right at water’s edge where garbage was stacked up around at the water line and throughout the lot. They offered a snack of a piece of meat between 2 slices of bread and some coffee. • Poor, poor communication and chaotic and uncoordinated transfers (bus to boat, boat to shore, shore to boat, boat to bus) at every point. Yes, there was a huge language barrier, but also little to no communication or even coordination most of the time. If this is a daily occurrence, print up some basic instructions or pieces of directions in different languages to use. There was a guide that spoke several languages, but I’m not sure he understood what he was saying since he could not really answer questions. • We were supposed to eat lunch at Bacardi Island beach. See their advertisement. Instead, after dropping off some from the group who signed up for one of the longer trips, we were taken by the boat somewhere else (Santa Barbara de Samana, I think) and then ushered to this small local dive where we ate then waited about 30 more minutes for our boat to return. No beach or explanation whatsoever on what was going on. Anyway, we were then picked up by the boat and taken back to Bacardi Island beach. The beach was OK but was a bit crowded with trash laying around. OK now if you are doing the math based on the quoted 8 hours, you are thinking that we are only going to be at this beach for an hour or so. Here’s where it begins to get very sketchy. We were given a free drink ticket and told we would not be picked up from the island until 5:00 - 5:30pm and it’s now 1:15pm. We were in fact picked up at around 5:30pm so at this point the 8-hour tour is already into 10 hours and we’re still a boat ride to get back to the bus and a long bus ride. Anyway, once we arrived back to where the many buses were waiting, nobody was telling you which bus to get on and it was up to you to walk to each bus and check if it was your bus. We spent a good 5-10 minutes in a bit of a panic looking for our bus. We were afraid we would be left behind and we’re 2 hours and 45 minutes from the hotel and it’s getting dark. We finally arrived back at the hotel at 8:45pm. There were some other not so pleasant things that happened, but I think you can get a good sense for how this went. • So, it looks like various tour operators share the bus and boat with other tours and other tour operators. Us signing up for an 8-hour tour didn’t matter since we were lumped in with 12-14 hour tours…they simply stretched the 8 group out to 14 hours. There was no warning they were planning this at any point. There was also a feeling (comments from workers) that they do this all the time, so I don’t think this was a one-off situation. They were in fact saving money (boat and bus transportation as well as labor) by combining all transportation for the two tours. I would steer clear of Shelting Tours and also this 8-hour tour by unless you like unpleasant surprises. Transportation to and from where you board the boat

We pick you up at your hotel/resort/AirBnB, etc., and drop you off at the boat with no waiting on others to continue the trip and no switching vehicles.

Many companies to save money, will have a small vehicle pick you up, drop you off at another location (under a bridge, in a gas station parking lot, etc.) to wait for a larger group to continue the trip. Sometimes the wait can be long and on the side of a busy road.

We use a large catamaran boat for two reasons.

Facts About The Isla Saona Excursion

How to get to isla saona from my hotel, resort, airbnb.

We will pick you up and drive you directly to Bayahibe. Our driver will introduce you to the guide working on the boat and make sure you are settled before the driver leaves. The driver will then be back and waiting for you to return from Isala Saona. Once you are back on the mainland, we will have you on your way back to your hotel, resort, AirBnB as soon as you are ready to go.

Where is Isla Saona located?

Isla Saona is located off the shores of Bayahibe which is located on the south-eastern side of the Dominican Republic and on the Caribbean Ocean.

Is this excursion the Isla Saona catamaran tour?

Our excursion uses a catamaran as we believe this is the best way to experience the Caribbean Ocean. We have a large catamaran sailboat that allows you to walk around, look out over the water on whichever side you prefer. Along with being the most enjoyable to arrive at Isla Saona we also believe it is the safest mode of transportation.

On the way back to the mainland (Bayahibe) from Isla Saona you will be taken back by speedboat.

*Note: Usually you spend the morning on the catamaran sailboat and then a speedboat on the way back after your day on the Caribbean and Isla Saona. However, occasionally the boats work in reverse (1 st the speedboat and then the catamaran) depending on weather, etc. Some of our schedule is reliant on mother nature.

Is this excursion the Isla Saona private tour?

No, this is not a private excursion and it is the only excursion we offer that is not private. We believe a large catamaran is the best way to experience the Caribbean Ocean while transiting to Isla Saona. Therefore you will join other groups on the boat. The private tours are on small boats with hard seats and an inability to move around. That is why we don’t offer the private tours. They are not enjoyable. By far this is the best way to experience Isla Saona.

What type of boat will be used?

The majority of the time you will be on a catamaran sailboat. There is no better way to enjoy your time on the Caribbean than on a catamaran sailboat. Large enough so you can walk around.

Can I get a refund if I book an Isla Saona excursion and then want to cancel?

The answer is yes and no. We can offer a full refund up till 3-days before your excursion. Since the food and drink must be purchased and taken to the island along with a reservation made for you on the boat, we must do all this 3-days before. If the weather is so bad that we can’t go, then you will be issued a refund or have your excursion moved to a different date (your choice). Please keep in mind the weather can’t just be cloudy or a little breezy. The weather must be inclement. Light rain doesn’t cancel the trip. In the Caribbean we have several light showers in a day while the rest of the day is perfect.

Does the excursion get cancelled for weather?

Desconectad de todo mientras exploráis un auténtico paraíso tropical con esta excursión a Isla Saona en catamarán. ¡Os enamoraréis de sus edénicos parajes!

Os pasaremos a recoger entre las 6:30 y las 6:40 horas por la catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación . Después nos iremos hasta Bayahibe, donde nos subiremos a una lancha rápida para ir hasta Isla Saona .

A mitad de travesía, nos detendremos durante 40 minutos en la piscina natural laguna Azul para que podáis disfrutar de un banco de arena único en medio del mar Caribe . Junto a este lago hay un santuario de estrellas marinas . ¡Abrid bien los ojos!

Seguidamente navegaremos hasta Isla Saona, un lugar paradisíaco perteneciente al Parque Nacional del Este . Allí, dispondréis de dos horas y 45 minutos para explorar por vuestra cuenta los arrecifes de coral , los manglares y las extensas playas cubiertas por palmeras .

A las 13:00 horas nos deleitaremos con un suculento almuerzo tipo buffet compuesto por carnes y diferentes guarniciones. ¡Que aproveche! Con las fuerzas renovadas, nos subiremos a bordo de un catamarán para iniciar el camino de vuelta. Durante el regreso, disfrutaréis de fiesta ,  barra libre de refrescos, baile y animación .

Finalmente, os llevaremos de regreso a vuestro punto de partida de Santo Domingo entre las 18:30 y las 18:40 horas.

Cómo visitar Isla Saona (República Dominicana) por tu cuenta

En esta guía sobre cómo visitar Isla Saona, uno de los grandes paraísos naturales de la República Dominicana, te ayudará a no perderte nada importante de la excursión más solicitada por los millones de viajeros que visitan cada año este espectacular país caribeño.

Situada al sur de la República Dominicana, dentro del parque nacional Cotubanamá, Isla Saona es famosa por sus playas de arena blanca y aguas turquesas, sus arrecifes de coral, sus fantásticas puestas de sol, sus manglares y su ambiente relajado. Aunque la mayoría de viajeros llegan a la isla en una excursión de un día, después de nuestra experiencia, te recomendamos pasar al menos una noche en la isla para disfrutarla con la tranquilidad que merece, sobre todo cuando los grupos organizados y la mayoría de turistas ya se han vuelto a la península.

Basándonos en la experiencia de los días que pasamos en Isla Saona durante nuestro viaje a República Dominicana , hemos realizado este post en el que hablamos sobre cómo llegar a Isla Saona desde Punta Cana y Santo Domingo, precio de los barcos, las mejores playas, hoteles donde dormir y muchos más consejos. ¡Empezamos!

Cómo llegar a Isla Saona

Para llegar a Isla Saona, ya sea por tu cuenta o en un tour organizado, deberás coger un barco en la localidad costera de Bayahibe, situada a unos 140 kilómetros (2 horas en coche) de Santo Domingo y unos 70 kilómetros (1 hora en coche) de Punta Cana , sus dos principales fuentes de acceso de turistas. Si llegas por tu cuenta, ya sea en coche de alquiler, traslado privado , taxi o bus y dispones de dos días, te aconsejamos coger una barca pública que tarda una hora y solo sale una vez al día (salida a las 9h y vuelta a las 14h) por unos 18 dólares (1000 pesos) el trayecto. En nuestro caso reservamos el barco público a través del hotel en el que nos alojamos en Isla Saona pero también podrás hacerlo en alguna de las agencias de la localidad.

En caso de tener solo un día es más cómodo y seguro reservar esta excursión en catamarán o este tour por las mejores playas de Isla Saona.. Ambos tours, situados situados entre las mejores excursiones en Punta Cana , salen desde Punta Cana e incluyen recogida y traslado desde el hotel, comida y guía en español. Si estas alojado o aterrizas en la capital de la República Dominicana puedes reservar esta excursión desde Santo Domingo , considerada una de las mejores excursiones a Isla Saona .

En caso de hacerlo por tu cuenta y solo disponer de un día, te aconsejamos coger una lancha privada por un máximo de 8 personas, que tiene un precio de unos 160 dólares el trayecto y así optimizar el tiempo y aprovechar al máximo tu tiempo en la isla.

Qué hacer en Isla Saona (República Dominicana)

Una vez llegues al pueblo de Mano Juan (punto de acceso principal de la isla) y el único en el que hay alojamientos, ya sea en barco público o lancha privada, tienes muchas cosas que hacer y hacer en Isla Saona. Hay que tener en cuenta que esta isla no es precisamente pequeña. Tiene una superficie de 110 kilómetros cuadrados, gran parte selva, y la mayoría de puntos de interés se tienen que conocer en barca, motoconcho (un medio de transporte que es como un taxi pero lo que se utiliza es una motocicleta) o haciendo caminatas que en ocasiones y dependiendo de la época del año, pueden ser más o menos complicadas.

Pueblo de Mano Juan

El pueblo pesquero de Mano Juan, de menos de 500 habitantes, y situado muy cerca de la laguna de los flamencos, tiene el muelle de acceso a Isla Saona más importante y concentra casi toda la oferta hotelera y de restauración. Después de nuestra experiencia te recomendamos dar un paseo por los numerosos puestecitos de souvenirs, la mayoría de ellos regentados por haitianos, darte un baño en su fantástica playa de aguas cristalinas y terminar devorando un delicioso pescado frito en los restaurantes Saona Paradise o Zoymar, dos de nuestros preferidos. Si dispones de tiempo puedes hacer una ruta andando hasta Canto de la Playa (1 hora) o hasta Playa El Toro (30 minutos), dos de las mejores playas que visitar en Isla Saona y por la tarde, esperar la puesta de sol tumbado en una hamaca.

Santuario de Tortugas

Otra de las mejores cosas que hacer en Isla Saona es visitar el Santuario de Tortugas , un centro de Recuperación de Tortugas Marinas situado en el mismo pueblo de Mano Juan. En este centro que tienen la misión de promover la protección, conservación y recuperación de las poblaciones de tortugas marinas que se encuentran en peligro de extinción por culpa de pescadores y cazadores furtivos. Durante la visita conocerás las características de las tres especies de tortugas marinas: Carey, Verde y Tinglar, que anidan en esta isla además de aprender sobre el seguimiento de los nidos y con un poco de suerte, observar como las crías salen del nido y llegan al mar.

Cueva de Cotubanamá

La Cueva de Cotubanamá , situada al este y accesible por un sendero desde Catuano, es otro de los lugares que visitar en Isla Saona y la República Dominicana . Ligada a una leyenda que entre sus profundidades se ocultó un cacique taíno, quien finalmente fue asesinado a manos de los colonos españoles, esta cueva encontrarás algunos de los restos y muestras del arte rupestre indígena.

Arrecife de Caballo Blanco

El Arrecife de Caballo Blanco , situado al sureste y con un rico fondo marino, es otro de los lugares que visitar en Isla Saona para los amantes del buceo y el snorkel . Además de observar miles de peces tropicales y coloridos corales, en este precioso arrecife puedes ver los restos que quedan de un galeón español del siglo XVIII y con un poco de suerte, familias de delfines, ballenas y tortugas.

Piscina Natural de Isla Saona

En medio del mar, a 400 metros de la costa, se encuentra la piscina natural más grande del mundo, algo que la ha convertido en otro de los lugares que ver en Isla Saona. Conocida como «Blue Lagoon» por ser el lugar donde se rodaron escenas de la famosa película la Laguna Azul , protagonizada por Brooke Shields, esta zona de menos de un metro de profundidad es perfecta para darte un refrescante baño, observar peces tropicales y sobre todo, enormes estrellas de mar de color rojo. Recuerda la importancia de molestarlas ni sacarlas del mar ya que se mueren. Esta práctica está (lamentablemente) muy extendida entre los turistas que llegan a la piscina natural, en muchas ocasiones animados por las agencias, por lo que es importante poner un poco de responsabilidad y no dejarse llevar por la foto.

Mejores playas de Isla Saona

Para completar la lista de lugares que visitar en Isla Saona no puedes dejar de disfrutar de alguna de las mejores playas de República Dominicana que se caracterizan por sus esbeltos cocoteros, verdes manglares, arena blanca y aguas turquesas. Entre nuestras favoritas se encuentra la Playa El Toro o Flamenco, situada a media hora a pie del pueblo de Mano Juan y que ofrece la postal típica del Caribe. Si dispones de más tiempo puedes llegar hasta El Canto de la Playa, situada a casi una hora a pie del pueblo y con un arrecife para practicar snorkel. Entre las 12 playas de Isla Saona también destaca la Playa del Gato y Playa Costa Romántica, situadas muy cerca la una de la otra y accesibles en barco, en las que puedes pasar un día ya que tiene varios locales para comer.

Es importante saber que los senderos que hay que recorrer para llegar a las diferentes playas son relativamente fáciles aunque discurren por zonas en las que no hay ningún tipo de servicios. Recuerda llevar agua suficiente, protector solar, algo para comer si vas a quedarte en la playa y sobre todo, repelente de mosquitos ya que, sobre todo en verano, suelen haber muchísimos.

Dónde dormir en Isla Saona

Cómo ya hemos comentado anteriormente, una de las mejores experiencias de Isla Saona y República Dominicana es pasar una noche en isla Saona para disfrutarla con menos gente. Hay que tener en cuenta que esta isla dispone de muy poca oferta hotelera y que la existente consiste en modestos hoteles y casas de hospedaje por lo que es recomendable reservar la habitación con tiempo para no quedarte sin disponibilidad.

En nuestro caso nos alojamos en El Paraíso de Saona , situada frente a la playa, con desayuno incluido y posibilidad de añadir cena. Otros dos alojamientos con una excelente relación calidad/precio son el Saona lodge y el Saona Beach House .

Consejos para la Isla Saona

Otros consejos importantes para visitar Isla Saona y disfrutarla al máximo son:

• Ponerse repelente de mosquitos al amanecer y al atardecer además de dormir con una mosquitera si la habitación no está bien aislada.
• Para evitar la picadura de los mosquitos es muy recomendable llevar manga larga y pantalón largo sobre todo al amanecer y al atardecer.
• Lleva crema solar y gorra para evitar insolaciones o quemaduras en las horas de mayor incidencia del sol.
• Aunque se recomienda calzado cómodo para llegar andando a las playas de Canto de la Playa y el Toro, se puede realizar en chanclas perfectamente.
• Para llegar a puntos más alejados de Isla Saona, en el pueblo de Mano Juan puedes alquilar bici o pedir algún local que te lleve en motoconcho.
• En la mayoría de playas más famosas que visitar en Isla Saona encontrarás vendedores de agua, cerveza, refrescos e incluso, cocos recién cortados.
• Puede que leas que Isla Saona es un destino «salvaje» en el que no hay nada. No hagas mucho caso ya que, aunque realmente es un lugar en el que no encontrarás las comodidades que puedes encontrar en la zona continental, no podemos olvidar que es una isla y además, un espacio protegido; en Mano Juan hay restaurantes, tienda con productos básicos e incluso, tendrás conexión a internet si tienes tarjeta Claro en gran parte de la isla.
• Si vas a hacer noche en Bayahibe y quieres llegar a primera hora en Isla Saona te recomendamos alojarte en el Bayahibe Guest House Hotel , un pequeño hotel muy cerca del puerto que cuenta con todas las comodidades.
• Aunque podrías llevar equipaje (maletas) en la barca pública, lo ideal es llevar una mochila pequeña con lo necesario para pasar 2-3 días y las maletas dejarlas en el alojamiento de Bayahibe o incluso, en el coche de alquiler, siempre que este esté aparcado en un lugar seguro.

Seguro de viaje para República Dominicana Para viajar a República Dominicana nada mejor que contar con un buen seguro de viaje ya que los servicios sanitarios son muy elevados, pudiendo costar una simple visita al médico 500 dólares y varios miles cualquier operación. ¿Qué ver en Isla Saona en un día? Si solo dispones de solo un día en Isla Saona te aconsejamos llegar a primera hora para hacer por la mañana el sendero hasta la Playa del Toro para después de unas horas disfrutando de esta playa volver al pueblo de Mano Juan para comer en alguno de los restaurantes recomendados. Por la tarde puedes llegar andando, en bici o motoconcho a Canto de la Playa para hacer un poco de snorkel y ver el atardecer.

¿Qué hacer en Isla Saona en dos días? Si vas a hacer Isla Saona en dos días, el segundo día puedes visitar a primera hora de la mañana el Santuario de Tortugas y después alquilar una barca privada para conocer otros puntos de interés como la Cueva de Cotubanamá, la piscina natural y terminar haciendo snorkel o buceo en el Arrecife de Caballo Blanco.

¿Qué visitar en Isla Saona en 3 días? En una ruta por Isla Saona en 3 días, el último día lo dedicaríamos a pasar el día entre la Playa del Gato y Playa Costa Romántica, haciendo una pausa para comer un buen pescado fresco en alguno de sus restaurantes.

¿Cuál es la mejor época para viajar a la Isla Saona? La mejor época para viajar a Isla Saona y República Dominicana es entre diciembre y abril, cuando la probabilidad de lluvias es menor y puedes bañarte en las calientes aguas del Caribe.

Excursion Isla Saona desde Bayahibe Playa

Iniciamos en la manana ya en nuestro punto de encuentro en la playa de bayahibe alrededor 9:15 a 9:35 am. sera recibido por nuestro equipo de Staff. donde se le pondras su bracalete y sera guiado a bordo del cataraman y donde tomaras un brindis de bienvenida en el barco.

Luego iniciaremos un recorrigo y observaremos en el recorrido algunas playa de los principales hoteles de bayahibe y dominicus, tambien como de algunas naturaleza del parque nacional del este, ya alrededor de las 10:45 am nos detendremos por 35 minutos en la piscina natural para hacer una sumersion en la playa cristalina y aprovecha para tomar fotos de recuerdo.

Luego continuaremos hasta llegar a la hermosa playa de la isla saona, alli tendras una area privada exclusiva para nuestro grupo con silla de playa, area recreativa, bar abierto y musica ambiental. luego  a las 12:00 pm disfrutaremos de una almuerzo buffet a la barbacoa.

"La Isla Saona es tan hermosa que no creerás que es real" - Colonial Tour and Travel   La visita a la Isla Saona es la excursión que todo el mundo recomienda cuando saben que vas a visitar la Republica Dominicana, realmente es un sitio paradisiaco, casi idílico por sus paisajes y la transparencia de sus aguas. La Isla Saona está localizada en el extremo sureste de la Republica Dominicana, es la más grande de las islas de Republica Dominicana, forma parte del Parque Nacional del Este y sirve de santuario a varias especies de aves migratorias. Originalmente su nombre era "Adamanay" , es un nombre primitivo aborigen.  En el segundo viaje de Don Cristóbal Colón a la Isla Hispaniola, venía acompañado de un Italiano de Savona, una región Italiana. Este Italiano fue quien descubrió la Isla y Don Cristóbal Colón quiso bautizar su honor,  llamándola con el nombre de : " Isla Savona ". Durante años, los pobladores de la Isla se encontraban el nombre difícil de pronunciar, por lo que le cambiaron el nombre por : " Isla Saona ". La Isla Saona, también tiene interesantes cuevas , como la de Cotubanamá nombrada en recuerdo del orgulloso jefe indígena de esta misma región quien fuera capturado por los conquistadores españoles y ejecutado en Santo Domingo . Una de las pocas áreas pobladas de este parque nacional , la isla Saona tiene un pintoresco asentamiento llamado Mano Juan . Este poblado de pescadores con sus casas de maderas en colores pastel es también un centro de manualidades . En la Isla Saona encontraremos kilométricas playas solitarias de finísimas arenas blancas de aguas cristalinas y rodeadas de millones de palmeras de coco, podemos encontrar algunas cuevas que recuerdan la presencia de los nativos tainos, fondos coralinos ideales para el buceo y criaderos de peces y mariscos, posee la denominada " Piscina Natural " , es un área de agua cristalina que en el fondo se pueden observar innumerables especies como la estrellas de mar entre otras, y aves como el flamenco. Se han registrado 112 especies de aves dentro de los límites del parque, correspondiendo la mitad a las especies existentes en el país. De ese total, 8 especies son endémicas de la isla y 11 especies endémicas del área del Caribe El manatí es un mamífero marino en peligro de extinción. También se encuentra allí el delfín. . La Isla Saona tiene una superficie 110 km, su población, la cual se concentra en el poblado de Mano Juan, es de aproximadamente de 500 habitantes con apenas 69 casas de familias, viven de la pesca y son hospitalarios, simpáticos  y muy receptivos con los visitantes, no olvide traer algunos dulces para los niños, les encanta. Las playas de Isla Saona fueron seleccionadas entre mejores playas de ensueño del Caribe por la revista Caribbean Travel & Life. Sus playas son espectaculares, vírgenes, con exuberantes palmares y aguas turquesas que las convierten en una de las regiones más bellas de República Dominicana. Durante la trayectoria hacia la Isla Saona, en el Catamarán podrán disfrutar de snacks y bebidas nacionales alcohólicas y agua, refrescos así como probar las exquisitas frutas tropicales. Inmediatamente usted disfrutar� de las hermosísimas vistas del verdadero caribe y sus aguas transparentes con arenas blancas como la sal hasta llegar a la famosa Isla Saona cerca de las 11:00 am.  Es costumbre de los excursionistas llevar algunos caramelos para regalar a los niños de las pequeñas poblaciones de pescadores que viven en la Isla. Tendremos tiempo para tomar un delicioso baño en sus limpias y cristalinas aguas, clasificadas por Caribbean & Life entre las mejores playas del mundo. En una de las playas de la isla tenemos un área especial reservada para los clientes de Colonial Tour and Travel con chaise-longues mientras algunas personas disfrutaran de animación y clases de Merengue y Salsa con nuestro staff de animadores y otros estarán recogiendo caracolitos o tomando fotos de la playa. Pero....son cerca de las 1:30 pm y nos ataca un poco el hambre. En un área de restaurant cubierto con hermosas palapas y palmeras almorzaremos un delicioso buffet a base de spaghetti a la langosta, pescados, chuletas, pollo a la parrilla, ensaladas verdes y rusa, arroces blancos y legumbres , vegetales y frutas tropicales, café y bebida locales incluida.   Reposaremos ese magnifico almuerzo tomando la suave brisa de la Isla y conversando con los hospitalarios isleños o dormiremos una siesta en la playa, caminaremos por la playa y tomaremos muchas fotos. A las 2:30 pm, regresaremos en lanchas rápidas cómodas y seguras y es casi obligatorio realizar una visita a los hermosos manglares, adjunto al Canal Catuano, que separa la isla Saona, de tierra firme. Donde veremos un banco de peces de todos colores que se acercan a las lanchas esperando que les lancemos un trozo de pan.  Luego continuamos hasta el banco de arena mas grande de la zona llamado La Piscina Natural, esta parte es un sueño, las personas quedan estupefacta de tanta belleza, aquí se encuentran múltiples especies marinas, especialmente las estrellas de mar. El capitán de la lancha o nuestro guía se lanza a buscar estrellas de mar, las sube a la superficie para que puedas tomar algunas fotos y las devuelve a su entorno. La piscina natural más grande del mundo, llamada así por su poca profundidad de menos de 1 metro, agua cristalina, banco de arena y a 400 metros de la costa en medio del mar. Es allí donde se realiza el brindis mas encantador, un verdadero sueño del caribe, acompañado de un trago de ron dominicano o mamajuana.   Finalizaremos llegando al puerto de Bayahibe y nuestros autobuses nos conducirán nuevamente a los hoteles donde llegaremos cerca de las 6:00 pm. Es un día espectacular y la mayoría de las personas realizan esta excursión más de 2 veces. La duración de esta excursión desde la salida de las excursiones es  8 a 9 horas desde la salida del hotel.

Full day excursion. Travel time is approximately 2.5 hours (with one stop) along the new East Highway.

Upon arrival in Santo Domingo, the first thing we will visit is the  Tres Ojos Nature Reserve  (caves and underground lakes) and we will continue the trip until we reach the  Columbus Lighthouse,  where we will have a panoramic view.

After that, we go to the  Colonial Zone  (the old city), where we will visit the  "Alcazar de Colon" . Recovering our strength thanks to a delicious  buffet lunch at the restaurant in the colonial zone . After which we will have time to walk around  Count,  see the old buildings, visit the  Primate Cathedral of America.

On the way back, we will stop in front of the Presidential Palace, where you can take some memorable photos.
