Amazon has dropped the trailer for a special episode of The Grand Tour , featuring Jeremy Clarkson , James May and Richard Hammond in a boat-based challenge.
The trio of presenters have vacated their cars for the first time and embark on a 500-mile river trip across Vietnam and Cambodia, in an episode titled The Grand Tour presents: Seamen. It premieres on December 13.
The feature-length episode is the first in a sequence of specials the team is making for Amazon Prime Video after they decided last year to ditch The Grand Tour ‘s studio format, set in a tent, and concentrate on a series of adventures.
Although they have parked their cars, the Seamen episode features many familiar format points, from the presenters showcasing the boats they have chosen, to racing challenges, collisions and unfortunate break downs.
For their journey along the Mekong Delta, Clarkson recreates a Vietnam war-era Patrol Boat River, Hammond charters a Miami Vice -style speedboat, while May enjoys a 1939 wooden river cruiser.
Watch on Deadline
Amazon’s director of European originals Georgia Brown said: “We know fans love to see the guys take on these incredible adventures across exotic locations and The Grand Tour presents: Seamen does just that – this feature-length special promises to be a thrilling off-road escapade, full of challenges and jeopardy, climaxing in one of the most dangerous and exciting challenges Jeremy, Richard and James may have ever endured.”
With Seamen launching in December, work is well underway on their second special, which has just finished filming in Madagascar and will premiere next year.

The Grand Tour review, series four: The tension has curdled into outright dislike

Here they are again, not so much the three amigos as an explosion of egos, crisscrossing the globe in extravagantly silly transport, offending entire nations and leaving wreckage in their wake. In the new instalment of The Grand Tour (Amazon Prime Video), sniggeringly subtitled “Seamen”, professional blowhard Jeremy Clarkson and his subordinates Richard Hammond and James May travel to southeast Asia where they embark on a race from Siem Reap in Cambodia to Vung Tau in Vietnam. The twist here is that they are travelling not by road but by water – insert your own jokes about wheels falling off here.
Few televisual conceits have weathered so poorly as the “Brits abroad” one, with its waft of colonialism and condescension. Nonetheless, the conviction remains among television executives that it still has legs, especially when merged with a car show. The Grand Tour has now done away with the studio tent in favour of a series of globetrotting specials, the word “special” being open to interpretation in this festival of hubris and testosterone.
The show’s budget is undoubtedly a thing of wonder. As is custom, our hosts each rock up with their vehicle of choice, comparing girth and horsepower like schoolboys at a urinal. As May chugs up in a sedate wooden pleasure boat, and Hammond appears in a flamboyantly painted speedboat straight from Miami Vice, Clarkson – who has the air of a bloated military chief sent to a deserted outpost where he can’t do any more damage – reveals he has blown £100K on a PBR, the navy patrol boat used by American forces during the Vietnam War. “I’ve bought a little bit of history, at vast expense, back to southeast Asia,” he notes, self-importantly.
The drill is familiar, both from previous Grand Tours and from the trio’s alma mater, Top Gear . There are stunts, sight gags and the casual mocking of Johnny Foreigner as our hosts peruse markets selling designer knock-offs and sit down to a dinner of stir-fried crickets. Clarkson’s idea of historical context is to compare Jeremy Corbyn to Pol Pot and recommend the film The Killing Fields . Arrogance and imbecility abound, as they smash into tiny fishing boats before blundering off, rarely pausing to inspect the damage. When their engines become clogged with mud and weeds, or as they run aground down narrow canal corridors, local men are drafted in to unclog the pipes and clear up their mess.
With the action unfolding on water as opposed to tarmac, the pace here is unusually sedate. Meanwhile, the bubbling tension between our dramatis personae now seems to have curdled into outright dislike, with May maintaining a conspicuous distance from his co-stars on his modest vessel. There is no chemistry or camaraderie; even the pranks are half-arsed. At no point does anyone look happy in their work. When they hit the South China Sea, where they are met with crashing waves and relentless, painful spray, all three appear positively ashen. The Grand Tour on wheels has its problems, but this one’s dead in the water.

The Grand Tour Hosts Are Racing Boats Through Cambodia and Vietnam in a New Special
This looks like one really watery adventure.
The Grand Tour , as we know it, is a car show. Its hosts, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, do and talk about things that are usually, in one way or another, related to cars. The show's latest special takes things in a different direction.
That's right, this time around the British trio are challenging themselves to navigate Mekong Delta, a series of complex rivers, peninsulas, islands, and streams that snake throughout southern Vietnam, to see who can reach the other side the quickest.
The trailer gives us a good look at what sort of boat each of the hosts have chosen, and they're ask wacky as you'd expect. Clarkson shows up with a military-like service boat meant for police duty. May went for an older wooden boat that looks like it would be more suited to Lake Como than a Vietnam river. Hammond went for a full-on speed boat, complete with some extremely Nineties graphics.
As with any of The Grand Tour's specials, there are plenty of hilarious antics, close calls, and clever pranks in store. The full special will be available to Amazon Prime members on, December 13, 2019.

From the sandy dunes of Namibia to the icy expanses of the Arctic Circle, the Amazon Original series combines gorgeous locations, high-octane cars, and the unmatched friendship between its hosts to take viewers on exhilarating rides each episode.
Which seasons of ‘The Grand Tour’ can I watch on Prime Video?
Whether you’re already a fan of The Grand Tour, a fan of its hosts or just curious, you can watch all five seasons of the series on Prime Video now. Check out a brief synopsis for each of the first three seasons as well as the special feature-length episodes for the last two seasons.
Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May kick off the first-ever season of The Grand Tour in California, but their adventures don’t stop there. Over 13 episodes, the trio embark on epic journeys that span across four continents. They drive across Namibia in beach buggies, tour the landscapes of Northern France in used Maseratis and attempt to make cars from sustainable materials.
Throughout the season, they also test remarkable cars like the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and the Aston Martin Vulcan. Along the way, they interact with guest stars such as Simon Pegg, Jimmy Carr, Charlize Theron, and Hollywood legend Tim Burton.
In a battle of the past, present, and future, season two kicks off spectacularly in Switzerland, with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May comparing the Lamborghini Aventador S, a Honda NSX, and an all-electric Croatian supercar.
The show also introduces ‘Celebrity Face Off’, a new format where celebrities are interviewed by Jeremy Clarkson and then race on The Enstone Track in a Jaguar F-Type to see who is the fastest. Look out for exciting matchups such as boxer Anthony Joshua vs WWE star Bill Goldberg, Paris Hilton vs Rory Mcllroy and David Hasselhoff vs Ricky Wilson.
Over 11 episodes, the trio go everywhere from New York City to Dubai and partake in their usual hijinks. This time, they try to build road-legal amphibious cars, attempt skiing in cars, and try their hand at car park racing.
Season Three
The third season brings Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May to Detroit, Colombia, Sweden, China and even the vast wilderness of Mongolia to test cars like the Aston Martin DBS, a Bentley Continental GT and the Toyota Yaris GRMN.
Across 14 episodes, fans can enjoy increasingly hilarious escapades as the trio embark on a RV holiday across southwestern United States, attempt to take quality pictures of animals in Colombia, and try to prove that the Citroen C3 Aircross is spacious, practical and better than an elephant.
Season Four
In season four, The Grand Tour deviates from the original format of the first three seasons and introduces a four-part series of feature-length specials. We see Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May travel to Cambodia, Vietnam and even the exotic islands of Reunion and Madagascar.
4A - The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen
The hapless trio take a one-time-only break from cars and set out on an epic journey across Cambodia and Vietnam in boats. They experience thrills, spills and genuine danger, and navigate their way through the world’s most iconic waterway – the Mekong Delta.
4B - The Grand Tour Presents: A Massive Hunt
The trio are back on four wheels in this feature-length special after their adventures in the Mekong Delta. In this adventure, they go to the exotic islands of Reunion and Madagascar with three exciting sports cars and race them on the most expensive stretch of tarmac ever built – a jaw-dropping ring road built out in the sea.
4C - The Grand Tour Presents: Lochdown
In this lockdown special, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May celebrate the iconic 70s American cars they saw on TV as kids to find out the reason for their popularity. They take a road trip across Scotland in three legendary Detroit machines: the Cadillac Coupe De Ville, a Lincoln Continental and a Buick Riviera. Even on home turf, this is one of their funniest, most action-packed and charming adventures yet.
4D – The Grand Tour Presents: Carnage a Trois
In this second lockdown special, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May dive into the bizarre world of French car culture. The adventure kicks off with a road trip through the Welsh hills, featuring a hair-raising mountain climb, bomb defusals, propeller-powered cars, helicopter stunts, and the most thrilling race of their lives. The journey concludes at the English Channel with a breathtaking medieval climax.
Season Five
5A - The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick
In the first episode of season five, the trio go on their first post-pandemic road trip to the icy wastes of the Scandinavian Arctic Circle. Driving their favourite rally-bred cars, their journey takes them through the tops of Norway, Sweden and Finland and ends near the Russian border. They come across a secret Cold War submarine base, discover a race track carved across a frozen lake, and face the challenge of building their own homes from whatever they can scavenge.
5B - The Grand Tour: Eurocrash
Jeremy, Richard and James head to Central Europe on a road trip nobody has ever thought of, in cars nobody would ever dream of. The epic 1400-mile journey takes them from Gdańsk in Poland, through Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia. They experience some Soviet-style Formula 1, are attacked by deadly archers, recruit a famous racing driver and take part in a spectacular Fast and Furious climax.
5C - The Grand Tour: Sand Job
In the latest The Grand Tour episode, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May follow in the footsteps of the legendary Paris-Dakar rally in Mauritania. Their journey starts with the world’s longest train and takes them across the Sahara, a perilous river crossing and unforgiving sand terrain - all in cheap modified sports cars instead of bespoke Dakar racers.

The Boats Behind The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen
While many of you aren’t interested in The Grand Tour leaving the car keys on the coffee table and instead looking towards boats, we can’t wait for Seamen to air this coming Friday 13 December. But while we’ve gone into great detail about what we’re expecting, we haven’t touched properly on the boats they’re sailing in this episode.
Jeremy Clarkson’s PBR (Patrol Boat, Riverine)
Used during the Vietnam War, this patrol boat is used for basic river patrol thanks to its low-draft and high speed. Clarkson explains to Hammond how it is powered by two V8 engines, both produces 350hp each. You can see a similar boat being used in the Hollywood motion picture, Apocalypse Now. This boat was apparently built specially for the show.
Richard Hammond’s Scarab
This high-performance power boat produces a total of 850hp from two V8 engines. According to Reddit , a similar Scarab with similar power will reach a top speed of around 60mph and run faster in choppy waters compared to still lakes and rivers. It’s usually found in the waterways of Miami where they’re used as tools for boasting.
James May’s 1939 Wooden River Cruiser
While we can’t find much information about this boat, but after a Google, they’re often described as antiques, and offer very little power compared to Clarkson and Hammond’s choices for this episode. Only offering one engine in most models, it is slow, but similar classic boats were sometimes used to pull water skiers in the official European water-ski championships.
So yes, while we have no cars in this episode, we have the trio sodding about and being funny as usual, and surely that’s something we can’t say no to? Episode 2 will bring back the cars, however. You can read about that here.
