Scotland Tours & Vacations

Looking out across Liathach as bad weather approaches. Torridon in the Scottish Highlands in the UK.

Misty highlands, sparkling lochs and rolling hills – there is a reason Scotland is known for its natural beauty.

But it’s not all just deserted moors and moss-covered forests (although there are plenty of those too!), Scotland’s rich history and culture are also a big drawcard. From exploring the medieval city of Edinburgh , to the lively fun of a traditional pub where many a wee whisky can be enjoyed, there are plenty of opportunities to experience the hospitality of the local Scots beyond the clichés of kilts and bagpipes. Discovering areas like the enchanting Scottish Highlands , the modern hub of Glasgow and the wilderness of the Isle of Skye, all with the inside knowledge of a local leader is an entirely unique experience.

Learn more about Scotland

Local culture.

Some might know the Scots, as they are fondly referred to, for their tartan kilts, bagpipe playing, whisky or delicious shortbread, but there is a lot more to this British nation than these clichés.

The people of Scotland are a mixture of Scottish,  British  and several minority immigrant groups. Many of Scotland’s traditions have roots in Celtic heritage. A large portion of the population are Christian, with some Catholics and others who make up the Kirk, the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. The Scottish are famous for their polite and friendly nature, stoic attitude and good sense of humor.

Soccer or football as it is known locally is a very popular sport, with rugby also being widely watched. For literature fans, the Harry Potter book series is deeply connected with the city of Edinburgh, as it was here that author JK Rowling lived when she wrote most of the books. You can visit the cafes where she wrote as well as see many of the places that inspired parts of her stories, including cemeteries and other buildings.

Geography and environment

Scotland is the most northern part of Great Britain and borders England. The low mountains of the highlands make up 60 per cent of Scotland’s land. Scotland’s flora is similar to most of northern Europe with forests, rugged coasts and moors. There are 62 different species of wild mammals in Scotland, common ones include: grouse, wild cats and off the coast there are many seabirds, seals and dolphins.

The climate of Scotland is classified as temperate, which means it has distinct seasonal changes and wider ranges of temperatures throughout the year. In winter, average temperatures are between five and seven degrees Celsius (41 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit) and in summer between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius (68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). The western highlands experience a lot of rain throughout the year, but other areas of Scotland receive much less rain.

If you’re looking to buy authentic Scottish wares, there are options aplenty in the capital city of Edinburgh and other large cities like Glasgow.

If you are after something special, some Edinburgh Crystal, which is owned by Waterford Wedgewood makes an excellent luxury souvenir. Deck yourself out with a set of new drinking glasses, bowls or for something really different – a crystal bell.

If you’re after a gift or souvenir that is a little more edible, you can’t go past a bottle of authentic Scottish whisky. Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a popular choice and whether you’re a connoisseur or a total whisky novice, the local proprietors will love talking you through the different tipples – they are a passionate lot.

If you have family heritage in Scotland, it can be a fun exercise to hunt down your clan tartan. But even if you don’t have one, a woollen scarf, hat or if you’re feeling brave, a kilt, is a distinctly Scottish piece of attire to add to your wardrobe.

Festivals and events

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is on during August each year and is a massive global arts and cultural event. It takes places in over 300 venues around Edinburgh and includes a range of performances and experiences across theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events.

Hogmanay Street Party

Hogmanay is a traditional Scottish celebration that takes place over New Year’s. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party is a three-day festival that runs at various locations across the city. With multiple stages with entertainment set up, a torchlight procession and plenty of opportunities for a ‘wee dram’, tickets for this festival are highly sought after and can sell out months in advance.

Highland Games

The Highland Games are held in spring and summer and are one of Scotland’s most iconic events. There are many traditional athletic events like tug-of-war and caber toss, where competitors dress in traditional kilts and spectators enjoy all the social and cultural festivities that come with it, including traditional food, drinks and music.

The Glasgow Whisky Festival

If you’re heading to Glasgow as well as Edinburgh (and you should!) the Whisky Festival is a great time to go. A showcase of Scottish and specifically Glaswegian distillers is the focus, but there is also a celebration of international whisky too, with attendees from all over the world. It is Scotland’s national drink after all…

Scottish food

The Scottish food scene is garnering international attention thanks to Scotland's elite chefs like Gordon Ramsay (Scottish born, even if he did spend his schoolyears in England), Nick Nairn and Andrew Fairlie. These culinary wizards are taking the country's incredible natural produce – beef, venison and seafood – and bringing us a whole new era of more refined Scottish cuisine. However, if you’re looking for some traditional Scottish fare, here are some dishes you must try.

It might not sound very appealing but if you’re a meat eater, you might surprise yourself by enjoying haggis too. Haggis is made of sheep or calf offal, mixed with oatmeal and seasoning before being boiled in a bag (although traditionally it was boiled in the lining of an animal’s stomach). The overall effect is not dissimilar to a sausage with a grainier texture and is often served alongside a traditional roast dinner.

Scottish porridge

A traditional breakfast food, Scottish porridge differs slightly from the standard oatmeal you might be used to eating at home. It has been a population dish for centuries and traditionally should be eaten out of a wooden bowl, with everyone dipping their oats into a communal bowl of cream (for some reason you should also eat it standing up). The preparation is also quite unique – traditionally it should be stirred with a wooden rod called a spirtle and only ever stirred clockwise with your right hand, unless you want to incur the wrath of the devil. While you might put sugar on your porridge at home, in Scotland it’s served with a generous pinch of salt!

A traditional Scottish shortbread is a simple biscuit cake with only three ingredients. Butter, sugar and flour. Cover it in sugar and cut the cake into wedges while it’s still hot and it will cool into delicious, crumbly triangle-shaped biscuits. It’s all in the texture…

Scotch pies

A scotch pie is a meat pie, traditionally filled with mutton or other mincemeat. It is double crusted, single portion pie that is often enjoyed at soccer (football) games, which has earned it the nickname of ‘football pie’. The lid of the pie is slightly sunken from the crust, to allow space for condiments to be put on top.

Good morning

Good evening

With breathtaking scenery, hearty cuisine and ancient history and culture, it's easy to fall in love with Scotland. Join your expert Trafalgar Travel Director and roam the wild Highlands, misty glens, medieval cities and majestic castles in this land of Vikings, Romans and royalty.

Ramble up the Royal Mile in Edinburgh

Follow in the footsteps of kings and queens from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to Edinburgh Castle. As we wander the once processional route, you will sample Scottish specialties and glimpse the city’s medieval past. Scotland’s authentic charm fills Edinburgh’s narrow closes and wynds.

Journey through Scottish Highlands

Wind north through sweeping glens, and you will understand this ancient land. On your Scottish Highlands tour, you will appreciate the waterfalls and haunted past of Glencoe Valley, the mythical monster of Loch Ness and the medieval ruins of Urquhart Castle.

View Arthur's Seat

Not far from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, you’ll find a taste of Scotland's wild countryside. Hike up windswept hills alive with heather flower in bloom, and sit atop an ancient volcano watching the sprawling city below.

Hear the story of the Royal Yacht Britannia

Step aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia and discover what royal glamor looks like at sea. The British Monarch’s boat for over 40 years, this extravagant watercraft is now permanently docked in Edinburgh. Spend a few hours exploring the vessel to see where the Princes spent their summers and world leaders and celebrities were once entertained.

Watch a Highland dance or two

There’s nothing quaint about the Scottish pastime of a Highlands dance. Walk into a pub and be enlivened by the many folk musicians playing fiddles, flutes, drums and accordions all around the Isles. You can watch with your pint or let the driving rhythms take you dancing. Either way, you’ll feel connected to the true spirit of Scotland.

Our top 5 things to do in Scotland

You'll uncover plenty of natural beauty and human history on our vibrant trips to Scotland. Stroll Edinburgh's historic Royal Mile, climb the rugged hills of Arthur's Seat and journey through the Highland wilderness.

Edinburgh Castle

The ancient walls of Edinburgh Castle have been touched by soldiers, kings, queens and even the odd pirate. Immerse yourself in Scottish history, gazing at crown jewels worn by Mary Queen of Scots and wooden doors vandalized by prisoners of war. Don’t miss the 1 o'clock gun that rings out over Edinburgh.

National Museum of Scotland

This unassuming Victorian building is brimming with history of Scotland and the world. Discover the wonders of nature, art, design, science and technology through this diverse collection. Spend a day wandering from room to room, never running short of things to learn.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum

Enjoy a captivating lesson in life and expression at Kelvingrove. Delve into natural history, arms and armor, fine art and everything between. From the Spitfire plane hanging from the ceiling of the west court to the collections of the Glasgow Boys and Salvador Dali in the east, this space will leave you spellbound.

Best museums in Scotland

Spend hours and days fascinated by the stories held in the museums of Scotland. Trafalgar's picks will prove these enthralling institutions shouldn't be saved for a cloudy day.

Originally served as a hearty meal to Scots on long journeys across Highland hills and heather-clad moors, the nation still loves Haggis. And with its rustic flavor and peppery kick, you will too. Have a taste and wash it down with a wee dram.

Cullen Skink

Hailing from the town of Cullen, this soup was made to warm the cockles of weary fishermen. Hence it’s made thick, creamy and comforting. With chunks of velvety leeks, potato and smoked fish, this smooth and flavorful meal is not to be missed.

Scottish Whisky

The Scottish isles are home to one of the world's most revered spirits - whisky. Speyside malts, smokey Islay drams and smooth blends can all be found here. Try it in a local pub or an award winning distillery. Either way, there's nothing quite like the taste of Scotch in the land where it was made.

Best food in Scotland

If it seems like Scottish cuisine is designed to warm your insides, that’s because it is. Come sunshine or rain, the dishes you'll enjoy on our trips are just another reason to love Scotland.

What to pack for Scotland

People packing for a tour

Walking shoes

Something comfortable and flat, with grip. There's a lot of exploring to do and the hills of Scotland are just as abundant in the cities as they are in the countryside.

Something warm

Even in the height of summer the Scottish night air has a bite. To make the most of your Scotland adventure, bring along a quality coat or jacket.

Woollen socks

A couple of pairs of woollen socks will serve you well in Scotland. They're warm and thick but surprisingly light to carry, perfect for protecting feet from long walks or the country’s beloved cold stone floors.

Prepare to sample the finest whisky distilleries around with hydralytes. Enjoy a tipple or two or three and you will still be fresh for adventures the following morning.

When planning a trip to Scotland, plan to pack less. Leave some space to bring home some of their specialties like shortbread for friends and cashmere for yourself.

You're sipping a wee dram of smoky whisky as you gaze out over a glistening loch. You and your new friends compare the photos you took of the Highland Coos you just spotted in a heather-covered moor. And someone is daring you to try haggis for dinner tonight... This is Scotland. And you're on a Rabbie's tour. Maybe you’re on a 1 day tour out of Inverness, or perhaps you’ve decided to discover the Scottish islands on a 17-day’ adventure. The choice is yours. Which of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks call to you? Loch Ness and its enigmatic monster ? The endless epic views of the Highlands? The raw beauty and legends of Skye ? Let our driver-guides take you there and share stories that go deeper and connect you with the land you travel through, its history, music, and culture.

Why you'll love Scotland

about scotland tours

Epic tales and terrific traditions

Scotland is the birthplace of Sherlock Holmes, the television, and whisky. So, the culture is a mix of poetry, intellect, and fun. The locals also love showing visitors a good time. So don’t be surprised when you’re invited to a Highland dance or regaled with folk tales at the local pub.

about scotland tours

Famed beauty

Scotland’s landscapes are more dramatic than a superhero movie, more beautiful than a three carat diamond, and older than any of your grandparents’ stories. From blonde beaches to serene mountains: you’ll discover the scenery lives up to its reputation.

about scotland tours

A trove of secrets

It’s no secret Scotland has fascinating history. But what’s less known, is how much of it’s shrouded in mystery. There are unexplained standing stones, untranslatable hieroglyphics, and unbelievable myths. So, keep your eyes peeled, your mind open, and your imagination switched on.

about scotland tours

Natural flavours

Everyone wants a slice of Scotland’s local larder. The seafood is exported to the best restaurants, Angus beef is enjoyed everywhere, and whisky is loved worldwide. And although these flavours travel far, there’s no place it tastes better than in Scotland.

3 Day Isle of Skye Tour

3 Day Isle of Skye

It was amazing, probably the most beautiful landscapes I've seen in my life! I already want to go back! Our guide, Niel was awesome, very funny guy with a lot of stories to tell and a real scottish spirit. I highly recommend it and I'm so happy it has been recommended to me.

Bonnie Scotland Tour

Bonnie Scotland

Great locations, fun facts and good info from our tour director. Excellent driving and assistance from our driver.

Highlights of Scotland Tour

Highlights of Scotland

This was my second G Adventures tour and it proved to be as enjoyable as the first one, which was the main reason my wife and I booked it. The small size of the tour group and the variety of people made it all the better. The tour offered a good balance between structured visits of major attractions and free time to explore on our own. I would not hesitate to recommend a G Adventures tour to anyone seeking a guided travel experience in the company of other like-minded travelers.

Scotland\'s Orkney Islands Tour

Scotland's Orkney Islands

Fabulous holiday with lovely walks boat trips and visits to historic places. Also swam at a beautiful beach (with a wet suit). Our guide was knowledgeable and flexible and the group got on really well. Highly recommend this trip.

Scotland Tour

It was a good trip seeing a lot of Scotland and the tour guide was very good. However a few things to improve are: There were too many people in the group so didn't really interact with the rest of them and the language difference didn't help either as I didn't realise that most of them spoke Spanish so the guide had to say everything in 2 languages. There was confusion on the trip as in the main Itinerary, it only mentioned breakfast included but when you looked into individual days it said dinner included, so didn't match. I feel that at least 1 dinner would have been nice to help with interacting with the group. I was a bit disappointed that the distillery changed days instead of the 1st day as I would have liked a bit more time to see Edinburgh especially as it was nice that day. Also the day in Edinburgh shouldn't be on a Saturday as it was too busy. A few places I felt rushed like Fort William as we only had time to get out, see it a bit, have a hot drink and toilet and then go but to be honest there wasn't much there so could have gone anywhere really. It was nice to see the castles except it would have good if Edinburgh castle had been included, but also maybe see something else for a variety like a mine or cave, or we did pass a cable car and that would have been nice. But overall it was a nice trip seeing places around Scotland in the time.

Country Roads of Scotland (Classic, 9 Days) Tour

Country Roads of Scotland (Classic, 9 Days)

The tour by Insight Vacations, Country Roads of Scotland, surpassed our expectations. Hosts at hotels did everything to ensure a smooth and quick check-in and a comfortable stay (knowing in advance that the rooms might be smaller than some travelers are used to was helpful). The food was good overall with lots of choices and variety. The coach was very roomy, lots of space and very comfortable. Peter (tour director) and Steve (driver) worked together as a great team and were always available to assist, answer questions or provide insights.

Isle of Skye & the Outer Hebrides (B&B) Tour

Isle of Skye & the Outer Hebrides (B&B)

This was a great tour that showed true Scottish spirit! From our fantastic guide, Gill, to the wild places she took us to, to the stories of Highlanderss fighting for freedom, this tour did not disappoint. Because it was a smaller tour bus, we were able to get to places the big guys can't and it helped us truly appreciate Scotland in all its glory. The group of travelers we were with were so great and my mom and I had a wonderful time. I can't thank Gill enough for making this such a memorable trip!!

Where can we take you?

The Isle of Skye

The Isle of Skye is renowned for its stunning scenery, picturesque fishing villages and breathtaking landscapes. At the foot of the Black Cuillin mountains lie the magical fairy pools, azure blue crystal-clear pools, and waterfalls.

Romantic Loch Lomond

This beautiful loch is the beating heart of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. 720 square miles of stunning scenery from lush rolling countryside and thick forest to vast glens and craggy mountains.

The Jacobite Steam Train

Enjoy one of the world’s greatest train journeys aboard the Jacobite Steam Train and immerse yourself in breath-taking Highland scenery. The railway line curves over the world-famous Glenfinnan Viaduct as seen in Harry Potter.

Outlander Filming Locations

Combine your favourite Outlander filming locations with some beautiful Highland scenery. Take in the historic gems of the Royal Burgh of Culross (Cranesmuir), Midhope Castle (Lallybroch) and the foreboding Blackness Castle.

The Isle of Mull

With its quaint villages, miles of coastline and cliffs, majestic mountains and empty beaches, the Isle of Mull is one of the best locations in Scotland to spot rare white-tailed sea eagles, whales, basking sharks, and dolphins.

The Isle of Iona

The tiny sacred Isle of Iona has been a place of Christian worship and pilgrimage ever since St Columba arrived here from Ireland in 563 AD. Iona is also the final resting place for many kings of Scotland, including Macbeth.

Perched on top of a vast volcanic rock, and visible from miles around, Stirling Castle was the key to the kingdom of Scotland. It has witnessed sieges, wars, and battles and looks over the famous battle site of Stirling Bridge.

Stunning Glencoe

Driving deep into Glencoe, Scotland’s most famous glen, you can’t fail to be moved by its haunting atmosphere and the legend surrounding the massacre of the Clan MacDonald by government forces in 1692.

Beautiful Oban

Originally a fishing village, Oban on the rugged west coast has grown into a vibrant town. Known as ‘seafood capital of Scotland’ you can savour some of Scotland’s tastiest oysters and mussels around the picturesque harbour.

Mysterious Loch Ness

Loch Ness harbours many mysteries and is the most famous stretch of water in the world. From its famous monster ‘Nessie’, the loch forms part of the 60-mile Caledonian Canal which cuts through the Highlands.

Historic Glenfinnan

In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at Glenfinnan in an ill-fated attempt to reinstate the exiled Stuarts to the throne of Great Britain. Harry Potter fans will know the viaduct as the bridge to Hogwarts.

Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands is a place where majestic mountains reach up into massive skies. Where sparkling lochs stretch as far as the eye can see, while rugged glens and moorland hide legends of long ago.

Exciting Adventures

Experience Scotland’s breath-taking scenery with the buzz of some high adrenaline thrills. How about a 40-metre-high Highland bungee jump over a dramatic river gorge or a thrilling RIB ride across Loch Ness.

Majestic Castles

There are around 3000 castles in Scotland, many are picturesque ruins, others being medieval towers and craggy fortresses to gilded palaces. Eilean Donan Castle is probably the most photographed castle in Scotland.

Scotch Whisky

Scotland has over 130 distilleries across five whisky-making regions. We’ve been enjoying Scotch for at least 500 years. The oldest distillery, Glenturret was founded in 1775, followed by Bowmore in 1779.

A Discover Scotland Tours Gift Certificate makes a thoughtful present for someone you know who is longing to explore Scotland. They could enjoy a small group tour between 1 & 6 days of the Highlands.

“The time spent with David was by far the most relaxing and enjoyable part of our trip to Scotland. His wealth of knowledge about Scottish history and his delivery of the information was engaging. His sense of humor had us laughing throughout the week. We developed a deeper appreciation of the land and the people. It was clear to us that David loves his country as it was present in his delivery.”

What To Do On A Small Group Tour of Scotland

I’ve said Scotland is my favorite place on Earth, and I mean it. I find it to be breathtakingly gorgeous and I cannot recommend it enough. If you are planning a small group tour of Scotland, there are certain places you cannot miss.

I fell in love with Scotland the moment I set foot on its mist-covered hills. There is something about this country that just feels like home. Maybe it’s the fact that it has some of the most beautiful places in the world, or maybe it’s the friendly people and rich culture. Whatever the reason, I know that I will always have a special place in my heart for Scotland.

There are so many things to do in Scotland that it can be hard to know where to start. But whether you’re looking for breathtaking scenery, quaint villages, or bustling cities, you’re sure to find it here. I always enjoy exploring the different regions of Scotland, from the wild Highlands to the rolling Borders. And of course, no visit to Scotland would be complete without sampling some of the delicious food and drink on offer.

From haggis and whisky to shortbread and Irn Bru, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. I recommend traveling with a small group. Larger groups will be a little difficult to manage as a lot of the places to visit are quaint. Here are my recommendations for what to do on a small group tour of Scotland.

Group Tour Stop 1: Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, is a beautiful and historic place that has something for everyone. From its picturesque Old Town and medieval castle to its flourishing food and drink scene, there is something for everyone in Edinburgh.

Edinburgh has a long and rich history dating back to the early Middle Ages. The first recorded mention of the city was in the 7th century AD, when it was known as Din Eidyn. The city came to prominence in the 12th century when King David I made it his capital. Under his rule, Edinburgh grew into an important political center, with a Royal Palace, Parliament House, and lively marketplaces.

The city reached its height of power in the 18th century during the Scottish Enlightenment when intellectuals such as philosopher David Hume and economist Adam Smith made Edinburgh their home. However, the city’s fortunes changed in the 19th century when Glasgow overtook it as Scotland’s leading industrial center. Despite this setback, Edinburgh continued to grow and flourish, with many new buildings and landmarks being constructed in the Victorian era.

In recent years, Edinburgh has undergone something of a renaissance, with its economy diversifying from traditional industries such as manufacturing to new sectors such as tourism and software development. The city is now home to a vibrant arts scene and some of the best restaurants in the country. If you haven’t visited Edinburgh yet, I highly recommend it!

Edinburg City Tours

Edinburgh is a truly unique city with a rich history and plenty of modern amenities. Whether you’re interested in exploring its ancient castles or trying out some of the local cuisines, you won’t be disappointed by what Edinburgh has to offer.

What I loved about it was the walkability. You can walk around the entire cobblestoned streets all day. The narrow streets and small passageways make it feel like a small town rather that a major city. While you are walking you witness the beautiful medieval architecture and relics on display.

Another interesting fact is that the city hosts several unique festivals throughout the year. It’s actually considered the world’s leading festival city. Throughout the year, you can experience various music, art, history, military and literary festivals that make this city even more amazing! Check out what’s happening HERE .

Group Tour Stop 2: Stirling and the Trossachs

No visit to Stirling and the Trossachs is complete without a stop at Stirling Castle. This imposing castle has played a key role in some of Scotland’s most important historical moments, including the Wars of Scottish Independence. Visitors can explore the castle’s many rooms and gardens, and learn about its fascinating history. Don’t forget to take in the stunning views of the surrounding countryside from the castle walls!

The Battle of Bannockburn was one of the most important battles in Scottish history, culminating in a decisive victory for Scottish forces led by Robert the Bruce over an English army. The Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre tells the story of this pivotal battle through exhibits, interactive displays, and audio-visual presentations. Be sure to stop by the on-site café for a well-deserved break after exploring the center!

For those looking for a challenge, hiking up Ben Lomond is a must-do while in Stirling and the Trossachs. At 974 meters (3196 feet), Ben Lomond is the highest point in the southern Highlands, making it popular among hikers and climbers alike. The views from the top are simply breathtaking, so make sure you bring your camera! Once you’ve reached the summit, take a moment to relax and enjoy all that nature has to offer.

Loch Lomond is one of Scotland’s most famous lochs, and for good reason. Its clear waters and stunning scenery make it a popular spot for boating, fishing, swimming, and more. There are numerous boat rental companies located around Loch Lomond, so you’ll have no trouble finding one that suits your needs. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day on the water or an adrenaline-pumping adventure, boating on Loch Lomond is sure to provide it!

Make Sure You Stop at Glasgow!

Shop Till You Drop at The Outlet Village In nearby Glasgow sits The Outlet Village, Scotland’s premier outlet shopping destination. With over 80 stores offering up to 70% off designer brands like Prada, Nike, Burberry, and more, The Outlet Village is every shopper’s dream come true! Make sure to leave some room in your suitcase for all your new purchases!

Scotland Group Tour Stop #3-The Highlands

What I loved was Trossachs National Park. If had the most stunning, breathtaking, picturesque sites to truly make Scotland magical. My favorite book of all time is Outlander . It made me fall in love with Scotland even before I ever visited it! Then when I did, especially here, it lived up to every single one of my expectations.

A visit to the Highlands is a must. Start your adventure in Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. Explore the medieval old town, visit one of the many museums or take a scenic walk along the river. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Scottish dinner – haggis, neeps and tatties (mashed potatoes, turnips and sheep’s heart, liver and lungs) washed down with a wee dram of whisky.

Embark on a day of exploring Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, and Glen Affric. Take a cruise on Loch Ness in search of Nessie, admire the views from Urquhart Castle ruins, and wander through Glen Affric, one of Scotland’s most beautiful glens. Be sure to stop for lunch at one of the many picturesque villages along the way.

For The More Adventurous Travelers!

Enjoy the great outdoors. Go for a hike in the Cairngorms National Park – there are routes to suit all abilities – or try your hand at mountain biking or wild swimming. In the afternoon, take a trip to Aviemore for some retail therapy before heading back to Inverness for dinner.

I recommend a visit to Fort William, taking in iconic landmarks such as Pitlochry Dam and Dunkeld Cathedral, along the way to Glenco. It’s one of Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes where you can follow in the footsteps of ‘ Braveheart’ director Mel Gibson and film locations scout Iain Smith by taking a hike up Buachaille Etive Mor.

I also recommend Ben Nevis – Britain’s highest mountain – if you’re feeling particularly active or take a cable car ride to the top of Aonach Mòr for breathtaking views over Glen Nevis instead. For those who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground (and away from any midges!), there are plenty of other walks in the area worth checking out.

Bonus Trip: Achmelvich Bay

Achmelvich Bay is a secluded beach located in the northwest of Scotland. It is a popular spot for camping, hiking, and swimming. The bay itself is beautiful, with white sand and clear turquoise water. There are also several tide pools that are perfect for exploring at low tide. Achmelvich Bay is well-known for its wildlife; seals can often be seen basking on the rocks or swimming in the bay.

One of the best things about Achmelvich Bay is that it is not crowded like some of the other popular beaches in Scotland. It is the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. There are several walking trails through the dunes, so you can explore the area even if you don’t fancy going for a swim. It is totally worth the drive!

Small Group Tours of Scotland are a Must!

Whether you’re planning a trip to Scotland or just daydreaming about it, I hope this has given you a taste of what this amazing country has to offer. I know I’ll be back soon enough for more adventures. In the meantime, Slàinte!

Breaking News

6 cars crash in pileup on route 222, things to do entertainment, pat metheny brings ‘dream box’ solo tour to berks jazz fest, the distinguished guitarist will be breaking out some hidden gems during a concert saturday at the scottish rite cathedral..

Few musicians manage to be relentlessly creative and enormously popular at the same time, but Pat Metheny has threaded that needle for nearly five decades.

After a short apprenticeship as a student and sideman of Gary Burton, the guitarist was signed to the iconic record label ECM in the ’70s. His debut album as a leader, “Bright Size Life,” was recorded in 1975 with the virtuosic bassist Jaco Pastorius and the dynamic drummer Bob Moses and was released in 1975 to much critical acclaim and commercial success.

Metheny, who plays a Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest concert on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, would go on to one of the most prolific careers in modern jazz, releasing more than four dozen albums as a leader, earning 20 Grammy awards and headlining at festivals and venues across the globe.

Throughout that career, in addition to leading various ensembles, Metheny has also recorded and performed as a solo guitarist, going way back to 1979 with New Chautauqua on ECM, a recording that reflected his roots in the Midwest plains. His latest album, “Dream Box,” is, as he describes it, “an unusual recording for me; a compilation of solo tracks recorded across a few years that I discovered while listening on tour.”

Metheny sees each solo album as different from his others, perhaps most dramatically in the case of the pastoral “New Chautauqua” compared to the electric noise of “Zero Tolerance for Silence.”

“But even looking at ‘One Quiet Night’ compared to ‘What’s It All About,’ although both are pure solo baritone guitar records, ‘What’s It All About’ was the first time I had ever done an entire record playing only other people’s compositions with none of my own and with a particular focus on an earlier era and so forth,” he said. “The idea is to continue the research.”

Metheny feels that “Dream Box” stands apart from the others for a few reasons.

“It is all about a particular kind of touch on the electric guitar that has been a pretty major issue for me across the years,” he said. “And the idea of doing a record like that probably would not have crossed my mind had I not discovered a folder of examples of me playing that way that I had forgotten about.”

It was during an extensive touring period that made up most of 2022 for him that he found that forgotten folder on his computer.

“I often make quick recordings of things: a new tune, a new (or old) guitar, a standard tune or just to try something out,” he said. “I have a spot in my laptop where I stash these things, truthfully, usually never to be heard again.

“Usually, the only time I get to listen to my own stuff is while on the road. I often say I live on output, with little or no time for input. That changes on tour, where suddenly there seem to be more free hours in the day, albeit on a bus or in some far-flung hotel room. Occasionally, those moments offer a chance to rummage around in the files to see if anything interesting may lie there.

“This past year was a particularly busy travel year for me, with about 160 performances worldwide. In the course of all that travel, I found myself returning to that discovered folder lots of times, genuinely surprised at what I was finding in there. From those listening sessions, I gradually sifted through everything to find this program emerging as a coherent whole. I found that I had unintentionally gotten to a destination I had not planned for, and I am excited to share what was buried in there.”

The focus is indeed on electric guitar, albeit a quiet electric guitar, one that in some ways mirrors the sound and feel of an acoustic guitar.

“A goal has always been to have a touch on the electric that might get me as close to the kind of phrase-by-phrase dynamics that can occur naturally with an acoustic instrument,” said Metheny. “In fact, using an electric in this way is quite a bit harder than what occurs naturally with an acoustic. There is one more step between the touch of the player and the listener that has to be accounted for.”

Of course, the compositions feature a strong reliance on melody. After all, Pat Metheny may be the most melodic jazz musician alive today, which is likely one of the reasons his compositions have been covered by so many other artists, including Kurt Elling, Roy Haynes and John Pizzarelli (who did an entire album of Metheny tunes called “Better Days Ahead”).

“That is incredibly gratifying to me, of course, and just an amazing compliment that people would take the time to work them up,” Metheny said. “One thing I do hear a lot from players is something to the effect of the tunes being ‘a lot harder than they sound,’ which I get a kick out of, I have to admit. I have watched a lot of expert bebop guys crash and burn on the bridge to ‘James,’ which kind of cracks me up.

“Also, as much as the community in general has become so fluent as improvisors over Tin Pan Alley-type harmonies and even very modern harmony, playing on simple triads (which comes up often in some of my tunes) remains a kind of final frontier in a weird backwards kind of way.”

Although we may think of melody as shorthand for simplicity, Metheny has a different perspective.

“For all the aspects of music that can be quantified, studied, measured, broken into pedagogical courses for college credit and so forth, melody is somehow resistant to it all,” he says. “While it is kind of easy to talk about something being ‘melodic,’ the differences between the kinds of melodies that stick to your heart and soul and those that go in one ear and out the other are kind of immune to what someone might be able to notate on a page and then come up with tangible reasons as to what makes this one work and that one not.

“For me, to a certain degree, what is successfully melodic has to do as much with what happens in between the notes as to the way they land — it is about how it all adds up. From a compositional standpoint, I can’t say that it is ever something I can ever guarantee I will get to, or even try for. I think my main goal is to do my best to let the ideas that seem to be floating around have a chance to be whatever it is they seem to want to be. Sometimes I am surprised myself at what seems to stick to use the term I mentioned before.”

Although Metheny has thrived as a soloist, he also has worked with many of the greatest jazz musicians of his time. The list of drummers alone with whom he’s recorded reads like a who’s who of modern jazz: Jack DeJohnette, Roy Haynes, Tony Williams, Billy Higgins, Brian Blade and Antonio Sanchez.

In recent years, his Side-Eye project has enabled him to play with a new generation of younger players, including keyboardists James Francies and Chris Fishman, as well as drummer Joe Dyson.

“I love great musicians, and as a fan I stay up on the young guys and look for who is playing well,” he said. “The Side-Eye thing is a chance for me to investigate that crew further, and Joe Dyson in particular is someone who I feel really grateful to have shared the bandstand with a lot over these past few years. He is the real deal.”

When asked about his own evolution over the years, from a teenager to a 60-something, Metheny points to the growth in his musicianship.

“Even though I was given an incredible head start by the opportunities I had playing in Kansas City at 14 or 15 years old, for most of those early records I had still been at it for less than 10 years,” he said. “Now it is like 50-plus years. I am a way, way better musician now than I was then, and as one would hope, I play the instrument a lot better too.

“In no way would I want to take away from the early stuff either. I am happy to say that there are no arguments I was making then that I wouldn’t make today, and I can, and sometimes do even address many of them. This tour has been a great opportunity to revisit some of those ideas, updated and all in one place.”

Metheny says that the title of “Dream Box” has a few meanings.

“Box is musician slang for a hollow-body guitar,” he said. “There are some super-cool dream boxes represented on this recording, including the prototype of a new instrument I have been working with Ibanez on that reflects my interest in pre-war Charlie Christian style pick-ups.

“But dreams in their broadest sense make up the vibe with this set. Music exists for me in an elusive state, often at its best when discovered apart from any particular intention. I hope folks might find some dreams of their own in this music.”

Those dreams will be on full display during Metheny’s solo performance Saturday at the Scottish Rite Cathedral.
