Goats and dogs run wild throughout the fort while thousands of pigeons flock to the perimeters where they are fed daily by locals.

Amber Fort or Amer Fort as it was referred to by our tuk-tuk drivers, has some impressive rooms and details. Arches and fine hand-made drawings and designs are spread throughout the fort. If you are on a budget, seeing the fort alone will be more than enough and it is free! Although if you have a little extra cash to splash the Amber Palace will set you back 500rp ($8).

This is definitely one of the best places to visit in Jaipur in one day and if you only have one day I highly suggest getting to Amber Fort. It should be your number one spot on the bucket list.

BOOK THE TOUR: Jaipur City Heritage Tour (Full-day) , which includes a visit to the Amber Fort.

Sunset at Nahargarh Fort

Perched on the rugged Aravalli Hills overlooking Jaipur city is Nahargarh Fort, a majestic fortress that stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and architectural grandeur. Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the fort’s name Nahargarh translates to ‘abode of tigers,’ symbolizing its strength and grandeur. Renowned for its intricate Indo-European architecture, the fort offers visitors a glimpse into the opulence of the royal era. A tour of the fort’s interior reveals beautifully decorated rooms and sprawling courtyards, while the fort’s exterior boasts panoramic views of the bustling city below and the serene sunset above. The fort is not just a symbol of Jaipur’s past glory, but it’s also a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike who come to admire its stunning beauty and serene ambience.

Nahar means tiger. Garh means fort. In English, this spectacular fortress translates to the Tiger Fort. Up in the hills of Jaipur, the Nahargarh Fort walls wind along the ridges of the mountains. Standing on the fort walls you will overlook neighborhoods brimming with intense action. If you arrive before sunset you can wander through the gallery or the wax museum.

As the sun set, we found ourselves overlooking a neighborhood, which bordered a huge sand dune. The homes on the edge of the sand dunes were almost submerged in sand. Hundreds of children played cricket and games on the dunes as we watched the last light of the day fade beneath the horizon. Definitely add this spot to your Jaipur one-day itinerary.

Amber Palace

The Amber Palace is an architectural marvel nestled atop a hill in the outskirts of Jaipur. Built in the 16th century by Raja Man Singh, the fort is an exquisite blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles, showcasing intricate carvings, expansive courtyards, and magnificent artwork. The palace comprises several remarkable structures like Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, Sheesh Mahal, and Sukh Niwas, each offering a glimpse into the grandeur of a bygone era. Visitors are often mesmerized by the Maota Lake at the foothills, adding to the fort’s scenic beauty. The Amber Palace is not just a symbol of Jaipur’s royal heritage, but it’s also a testament to the artistic prowess and vision of its builders. A visit here promises a journey back in time, bringing history to life through its impressive structures and stories.

Gemstone Hunting

Known as the ‘Gem City of India,’ Jaipur is a paradise for gemstone lovers and jewelry enthusiasts. The city boasts an age-old tradition of gem cutting, polishing, and jewelry making, making it one of the world’s most famous hubs for precious and semi-precious stones. From vibrant bazaars to specialized jewelry stores, shopping for gemstones in Jaipur is an exciting endeavor.

Visitors often find themselves enchanted by the wide range of rubies, emeralds, garnets, amethysts, and the locally sourced ‘Kundan’ jewelry. The famed Johari Bazaar, in particular, offers an immersive shopping experience, with craftsmen and vendors showcasing their exquisite collections. Shopping for gemstones in Jaipur provides not just an opportunity to acquire a beautiful souvenir, but also a chance to appreciate the city’s deeply ingrained craftsmanship and artistic culture.

Go on a Safari

This isn’t your average safari and I’m sorry if you are about to be disappointed. I am talking about an urban safari. Take a tuk-tuk anywhere in the city to your destination and the safari begins.

On the streets of Jaipur, you can expect to spot camels in the traffic, pigs eating the scraps, monkeys running riot, enormous cows causing traffic jams, well-fed dogs, masses of pigeons, mongoose, squirrels and an abundance of peacocks. I’ve heard the term urban jungle thrown around before but Jaipur is for real, an urban jungle.

Go rooftop hopping for sunset

One of my favorite nights in Jaipur was completely unplanned. We headed to the Hawa Mahal area and before we could make it to the rooftop cafe we were headed to, a man yelled out at us. He was indeed trying to befriend us so we would ultimately buy some textiles from his store.

Don’t be offended he is just working his corner. His name was Harish, he’s traveled all over the world and his secret sunset spot was incredibly cool. He hung out with us, offered us weed and became our best friend for the forty minutes it took the sun to set. He even took over my camera and shot a few photos for us.

Find a random rooftop and try and get on top of it for sunset. Beware monkeys!

Jaigarh Fort

The Jaigarh Fort, also known as the ‘Victory Fort’, stands majestically on the ‘Cheel ka Teela’ hills, offering a sweeping view of the Pink City, Jaipur. Built in 1726 by Jai Singh II, the fort was primarily designed as a defensive structure to protect the Amer Fort and palace complex. Its striking features include towering watchtowers, thick walls, and a strategic location, manifesting the fort’s military purpose. The fort is home to the world’s largest cannon on wheels, the ‘Jaivana Cannon,’ showcasing the military prowess of the bygone era.

Despite its austere exterior, the fort houses beautiful gardens, a water storage system, and palatial residential complexes inside, presenting an interesting contrast. A visit to Jaigarh Fort not only offers a glimpse into Jaipur’s historical military architecture but also provides a panoramic view of the city’s breathtaking landscapes.

If you are into history put this on your list as a place to visit in Jaipur. Get a guide and you will enjoy learning from a knowledgeable local. We visited the Jaigarh Fort before heading to Nahargarh Fort for sunset if that helps to plan your day out.

Nahargarh Fort for sunrise

The first time we visited the Nahargarh Fort we arrived at 6 am but found we were locked out. We still enjoyed possibly the most epic view of the entire week while hanging around on the outside walls. The moon was still visible before the sunrise and there was no-one around.

I didn’t expect India to feel exactly as it did during the moments these photos were taken. A vast, barren, peaceful, desert city. Although there were times it was anything but peaceful, like peak hour in a tuk-tuk.

9. Survive the tuk-tuk life

A tuk-tuk is going to be your best mode of transport unless you are the motorbike kind of traveler. Because there were two of us the price of the tuk-tuk worked out fairly cheap. A 20-minute ride can cost you a couple of bucks depending on your negotiating skills. We had a range of drivers, some more aggressive than others.

While we had no crashes we did ram a few people, but bumper cars is the norm in Jaipur so no worries. Aside from the incessant beeping, it was a fun experience competing in the city rally every time we were headed to a new destination. Coming from a country with road rules, beeping at the person in front of you who has nowhere to move may seem unnecessary, loud like it might be a sound you hear in your sleep.

However, enjoy it. This is how it is. Laugh don’t get frustrated and be nice to your driver he most probably knows the spots you won’t find in this blog post or any for that matter.

Ganesh Temple for sunset

The Ganesh Temple, also known as Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple, is a popular religious site located in the heart of the Pink City, Jaipur. The temple is nestled on the Moti Dungri Hill, named after the palace that shares the same hill. Dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the temple is unique as it houses a statue of the deity depicted as a child – a rare representation in Indian temples. Built in the 18th century by Seth Jai Ram Palliwal, the temple is renowned for its intricate carvings and architectural beauty that reflect a blend of Islamic, South Indian, and Rajput styles. The temple holds special significance for the locals and sees a surge of devotees, especially on Wednesdays and during the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival. A visit to the Ganesh Temple is a spiritual experience, offering a serene retreat amidst the bustling city of Jaipur.

Ganesh Temple was lodged at the top of a mountain. A grueling, but short, set of stairs had us breathing hard by the time we made it to the top. We enjoyed views of the city on one side and watched the sun fade behind the mountain on the other.

Sun Temple for sunset

Aptly named, this is one of the best spots for sunset. The Sun Temple in Jaipur, also known as the Surya Mandir, is a serene sanctuary dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. Perched on the Galta Hill, this beautiful temple offers panoramic views of the surrounding Aravalli hills and the cityscape of Jaipur. The temple, built in the 18th century, displays an impressive blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, with its ornate carvings and intricate design.

The temple’s tranquil ambiance is magnified during sunrise and sunset, as the Sun God is worshipped during these times. On Sundays, a special ‘aarti’ or prayer ceremony is conducted, attracting numerous devotees. In addition to its spiritual significance, the Sun Temple is a favored spot for bird watchers and nature lovers, as the area around the temple is teeming with native flora and fauna. Visiting the Sun Temple offers a unique blend of spirituality, natural beauty, and architectural marvel, making it a must-see in Jaipur.

The walk up from the entrance archway is owned by monkeys. They are absolutely everywhere and we even managed to find their godfather, The Monkey Man who has apparently been featured in several articles and documentaries. He fed the monkeys by hand and they seemed to trust him.

Along the steep pathway to the sun temple, families were living in tents, offering chapati to support themselves. We then bumped into one of the most epic characters of the trip. He was a yogi, claiming to have the trident naturally printed into his tongue and hand.

After each photo we took he chanted. He asked for money and more or less explained that he makes a living by looking like a genuine boss sitting on top of the hill.

jaipur one day city tour

The temple at the top is home to a family who tends to the building. They explained a little about the temple and less than subtly asked for a donation. The sunset was worth the small note I tipped into the box. From the viewing platform beneath the temple, we watched monkeys and goats running rings around the cows below.

The sun slowly cast a shadow on the hundreds of cricket games being played in the streets below. Easily one of the best places to visit in in Jaipur for checking out the sunset.

Play cricket on the street

I’m Australian and have played plenty of backyard cricket. I thought I could swing a bat. I can’t. When I faced a few older guys in a small courtyard I faced an over of balls. I hit none. I was clean bowled on the last ball.

Cricket is played all over Jaipur and luckily I was able to redeem myself in almost two hours of street cricket with a bunch of young kids and teenagers. We played with a real cricket bat but a plastic ball, which I happily smacked all over the neighborhood. They wanted me to keep batting when I got out to see who could be the next to hit the broken chair, that sat limply behind my awkward batting stance.

Playing games whether it be cricket, football or volleyball is a great way to gain some trust and make a friend. One of the fathers invited us in for chai and a snack. He was also a 7ft tall Indian, a gentle giant.

Become a chai guy

I’m not a tea guy, I’m hardly a coffee guy. But in India, you become a chai guy. For 10rp or 15 cents you can get a small cup of freshly brewed chai tea with milk.

It’s always good to take a break from the hot sun or whatever excuse you need to make up. It became the glue that held our adventures together.

Between morning and lunch, lunch and afternoon, we enjoyed a little chai. The best part about the chai tea is watching it get poured from almost a meter above the pot. A truly skillful art and one of the most theatrical hot drink preparation performances you will witness.

Wander the markets

Jaipur, often referred to as the ‘shopper’s paradise’, hosts a variety of bustling markets that reflect the city’s vibrant culture and rich heritage. Among these, Johari Bazaar is the most famous, known for its splendid collection of gems, precious stones, and exquisite traditional jewelry. Then, there’s Bapu Bazaar, a go-to place for Jaipur’s iconic block-printed textiles, blue pottery, and leather products. For a more eclectic mix of goods, visit Nehru Bazaar, which offers everything from footwear and textiles to perfumes and trinkets.

The Tripolia Bazaar is another must-visit market, particularly for its lac jewelry and locally made carpets and rugs. Exploring these markets is not just about shopping; it’s an immersive experience that allows you to witness the city’s bustling life, savor local street food, and appreciate the craftsmanship that Jaipur is renowned for. Exploring the markets are one of the best things to do in Jaipur in one day and must be on your Jaipur itinerary.

Monkey Temple for Sunrise

The Monkey Temple, also known as Galta Ji Temple, is a unique pilgrimage site nestled amidst the Aravalli hills on the outskirts of Jaipur. This ancient temple complex is named after the holy sage Galav, who meditated here, but it has earned its popular name due to the large tribe of monkeys that live in the vicinity. The temple, built in pink sandstone, showcases a splendid architectural blend of kunds (water tanks), pavilions, and domes.

The temple is also renowned for its seven sacred water pools, with the Galta Kund being the holiest, believed to never run dry. A visit during Makar Sankranti, a significant Hindu festival, reveals the temple at its vibrant best. The Monkey Temple, with its natural beauty, spiritual ambiance, and playful primate inhabitants, offers a unique and memorable experience to every visitor. This is definitely one of the top things to do in Jaipur in one day.

Head out on a portrait adventure

I love shooting portraits but even if you are just an observer you are in a land of some unique characters. Taking photos often requires lots of interactions and I get to shake a lot of hands and have some interesting chats.

As always you need to be respectful and try and feel the situation. If you are in someone’s personal space and they are clearly irritated by the camera, apologize and put it away. Most people will be more than happy and give you a nod to take a photo.

Taste-test the Street Food

I’m no foodie and I can’t handle spice. You would think eating in India would be a struggle for me. However, as always I enjoyed the food and found several favorites that I went back to many times.

A samosa set me back 10rp, while Daal and Naan might cost you 60rp-150rp or $1-2. Lassies, a yogurt based drink are served out of terracotta cups, a great refresher. Lime soda is the drink of the town and to be honest wasn’t my favorite but when it’s steaming hot, why not.

India #70 - home delivery

The Hawa Mahal, or the ‘Palace of Winds,’ is an iconic landmark that adorns the city of Jaipur with its exceptional architectural splendor. Commissioned by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799, this five-story palace is designed in the shape of Lord Krishna’s crown, as the king was a devoted follower. Constructed from red and pink sandstone, the most striking feature of the Hawa Mahal is its high screen wall filled with nearly a thousand latticed windows or ‘jharokhas,’ which allowed royal women to observe street festivities while staying unseen from the outside.

The architectural style is a blend of Rajput and Islamic design, presenting a magnificent façade that becomes especially captivating at sunrise. Today, the Hawa Mahal is not just an architectural wonder, but it also offers a peek into royal history through its museum. Whether viewed from the street or explored from within, the Hawa Mahal never fails to mesmerize visitors with its grandeur.

Water Palace/Jal Mahal

Situated amidst the serene waters of Man Sagar Lake, the Jal Mahal, also known as the ‘Water Palace,’ is a stunning marvel of Rajput architecture in the heart of Jaipur. Constructed in the 18th century by Maharaja Madho Singh I as a hunting lodge and summer retreat, the palace offers a splendid sight, with its red sandstone façade appearing to float on the lake’s surface. Its unique design consists of five stories, four of which remain underwater when the lake is full, leaving only the topmost level visible.

The palace features intricate carvings and a rooftop garden, demonstrating the architectural brilliance of the period. Although entry into the palace is restricted, visitors can admire its breathtaking beauty from the lake’s shores or opt for a boat ride around it. The Jal Mahal, with its splendid isolation and surrounding natural beauty, offers a tranquil and picturesque spectacle, making it one of Jaipur’s most loved tourist attractions.

City Palace

In the heart of the Pink City, Jaipur, stands the magnificent City Palace, a grand testament to the city’s royal lineage. Constructed in the 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, the palace complex showcases a harmonious blend of Rajput, Mughal, and European architectural styles. The complex houses numerous gardens, courtyards, buildings, and a museum that displays a rich collection of royal costumes, artifacts, and an armory.

Key attractions within the palace include the Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Diwan-i-Khas, and Diwan-i-Aam, each bearing unique architectural features and historical significance. The intricately decorated peacock gateways of the Pritam Niwas Chowk are particularly mesmerizing. Today, part of the palace is still the residence of the royal family, adding to its charm. A visit to the City Palace provides a deep insight into Jaipur’s regal history, culture, and artistic excellence, making it an essential stop for any visitor to the city.

In our same day Jaipur local sightseeing trip you and your family will be visiting the following sites of interest :

1. City Palace, Jaipur

1 Day Jaipur Local Sightseeing Tour by Car City Palace

The glorious City Palace of Jaipur is one of the most frequented tourist attractions of Jaipur and the first place to visit with our one day private trip. This famous palace was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh between the years 1729 to 1732.

The vast complex of the palace occupies one seventh of the walled city. The City Palace used to be the seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur for all his courtly affairs. The palace is intricately planned with a special focus on division of the complex into a series of courtyards, buildings and gardens.

The architectural style of the City Palace is an amalgamation of the Shilpa Shastra along with Rajput, Mughal and European styles. The palace was built using red and pink sandstone and has three gates named ‘Tripolia Gate’, ‘Udai Pol’ and ‘Virendra Pol’.

The instruments here pertain to Egypt’s Ptolemaic astronomy and follow three classical celestial coordinates – horizon-zenith local system, the equatorial system and the ecliptic system – to track the positions of heavenly bodies.

This observatory is also the proud owner of the world’s largest sundial. These instruments still work as well and accurately as before and have seen no damage through the centuries.

Jantar Mantar is the perfect monument to witness the marvel of mathematical, scientific and engineering precision. Hawa Mahal

Resembling Krishna’s crown, Hawa Mahal is an elaborate monument in Jaipur. Standing right in the middle of the old market of Jaipur, the structure made of red and pink sandstone keeps the name of the Pink City very proudly. Explore Hawa Mahal on Jaipur travel packages for historical elegance. The palace was built for the ladies of the royal household to observe everyday life and festivals without being seen from the outside.Today, it stands as a timeless symbol of Jaipur's architectural, cultural, and historical splendour. It features a unique honeycomb design on its facade with 953 intricately carved windows called "Jharokhas". The delicate lattice design on the windows allows cool breezes to flow through and keep the palace cool, thereby giving the palace its name. The majestic facade of Hawa Mahal which is visible from the street is not its main front, it’s the back. The monument’s delicate stone-carved screens, small casements, and arched roofs make it a captivating tourist spot, preserving the rich heritage of Rajasthan. From its top floors, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the bustling streets and grand all-pink architecture of Jaipur city. Hawa Mahal's exquisite craftsmanship and historical significance make it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and architecture lovers alike.History of Hawa Mahal Jaipur - Hawa Mahal was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh who was the grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh. The story of the birth of the palace started when Pratap visited Jhunjhunu and saw Khetri Mahal.Maharaj was impressed by the unique design of the Khetri Mahal, and that was when he decided to create a better version of it. Lal Chand Ustad designed this palace and ended up making one of the best monuments history has ever created. The primary purpose for creating this palace was to give royal women a separate place. From Hawa Mahal, they could enjoy the everyday lives and celebrations of the festival through the windows without being seen as they weren’t allowed to go out in public without a veil. The Hawa Mahal was a part of the main City Palace, and the royal family used to come here to escape the scorching heat as this palace was always cold and breezy due to the windows it has. From then on, it has been preserved to keep the glory and grace alive for the generations to come.Architecture of Hawa Mahal Jaipur - Hawa Mahal is an excellent example of Hindu Rajput architecture finely blended with Islamic Mughal architecture giving it the face it is famous for. It is made with red and pink sandstone along with white marble inside the palace. The look of the palace observed from the street looks extremely beautiful, and people mistake it with the entrance of the palace. Actually, it is the backside of the palace as it is an extended part of the main City Palace. It has five floors adorned with 953 jharokhas and latticework. The technology of Venturi effect is utilised well to make the air coming inside the palace cool. This effect always helped the Hawa Mahal stay serene and pleasant, so royal women never had a problem staying here in hot temperatures. At several times, the entire royal family used to get together here and escape the summers together. This honeycomb-like monument is a proud heritage left by the bygone era, which is an integral part of the history as well as architecture.

One Day in Jaipur Itinerary – The Best Places in Jaipur, India

The third corner of the golden triangle and the best place to find the calm in the Indian storm, Jaipur is most definitely a must for those touring Northern India. When visiting Delhi and Agra it just makes sense to complete the golden triangle – and here’s why.

One day in Jaipur Itinerary

Guest post by Tabitha

When in India, you will find that you are always very much on the move. The hustle and bustle of the country is like no other; yet it takes three times the usual time to do menial tasks like picking up a train ticket. And that is why people love it – it is truly unique and once emerged in the way of life it is a hard place not to love. But sometimes, you just want to have a moment of peace and step away from the hundreds of tourists and staring eyes of the locals. That solace can be found in Jaipur.

Now, it can’t be said that it’s chilled… but for India, it is! There is so much that makes Jaipur distinctive, from its architecture to its fabrics to the amazingly painted elephants you will see wandering down the main roads.

What’s the best time to visit Jaipur?

Summer in Jaipur is from  March to July  and temperatures reach up to 45 degrees Celsius. This is not preferable for the activities that you may wish to do there, unless you have a high toleration for heat!

From July to November  lasts the monsoon season, and in India as a whole it rains… a lot. However, Rajasthan’s monsoon season is much milder, so from the end of September to October  you can avoid the rain entirely, though it is a risk to take. Therefore, travelling in these months is best avoided if you can.

The most popular time to go is winter, from November to February . The weather is warm, dry and sunny, but the nights can be cool, so be ready for it! Good weather does mean a lot more tourists, so queues for popular attractions could be a lot bigger, but the atmosphere of the city as a whole is nice because everyone can get out regardless of the poor weather.

Furthermore, if you go in March, you can see Jaipur’s famous  Elephant festival , where painted elephants roam the streets and sports such as elephant polo take place! This occurs the day before Holi in March. Jaipur also has a k ite festival on the 14 th of January, which is the first day the sun is in the northern hemisphere. It is a true spectacle as the kites have glass shards which catch the light when in the sky… one to maybe watch from afar!

What’s good to know about Jaipur?

Jaipur is known as the pink city, and upon arrival you will not be disappointed by your expectations. It is in fact very pink. In fact, the colour is so entrenched in the history of the country that it is enforced in local laws!

Jaipur - Pink City

One of the finest examples of the pink colour in Jaipur is the Hawa Mahal Jaipur, also known as the Palace of the Winds. It was built to resemble the honeycomb structure of a bee’s nest and got its name from the ‘cooling system’ design of the windows, which were designed to allow the breeze to blow through. However, windows were in fact installed into the palace during a renovation, meaning its name has lost all meaning. The palace acts as a prime example of Jaipur’s amazing architecture. It appears to be a great palace, but in fact it is all a façade. The structure is almost 2 dimensional and was built as a high screen so that women of the city palace could observe street festivals from inside and remain unnoticed from the outside.

One Day in Jaipur Itinerary

Follow this guide and make the most of your trip even if you’re short on time. These are the top sights and things to do during your one day in Jaipur.

Start your day early, you have a fun day of activities ahead!

The Monkey Temple

A good place to begin is Galtaji, aka the Monkey Temple . If you are travelling round India, it’s likely you will have seen a lot of temples and maybe be a bit hesitant because of that, but this one is like no other. Situated literally in a rock face, about 10km out of the city centre, is an ancient pilgrimage site. If you get a tuk tuk from the city centre, it should cost no more than 400 rupees for them to drive you to the site, wait for you to visit and then drive you back. In total, it’s around a half hour drive each way, but it’s definitely worth it!

Monkey Temple, Jaipur

Upon arrival, you will be dropped on the outskirts of a town facing a big hill. You may think you have been tricked by the driver, but look for people selling monkey food, and the monkeys themselves, and you’ll know you’re in the right place!

You walk up the hill and reach a point where you can continue to the top or go ahead through a little village. The top will take you to a tiny temple with a 10 rupee entry fee. It’s not much to see, but the view  from there is worth the extra 10 minute walk. Carrying on through the village takes you down the other side of the hill. It’s a bit of a walk but you will reach a more built up area, then suddenly, out of nowhere, you turn around and behind you is a massive temple area, with pools filled with monkeys cleaning themselves and another one filled with people worshiping and praying. It is a true spectacle that is well worth the visit! A little tip though, people will try charge you for taking pictures. You can either tell them to go away, get over your reluctance and pay the small fee for a quiet life, or just not take pictures, but do not miss out on the memory of this place!

The Palace of the Winds

Upon arrival back to the city, take a wander past the Palace of the Winds mentioned above. You can go in, but when you only have one day it’s more of a photo opportunity. After all, it’s flat, there’s really not much to see! Local shop owners from across the road will encourage you to go onto their roofs to get a better view. In actual fact, the view from there is amazing, you can see right over the city as well as the surrounding forts, and all they ask in exchange is that you take a look in their shop. Obviously, as this is India, as usual watch your back and don’t be naïve to the fact that they will expect you to buy a little souvenir as thanks, but it’s well worth it!

The Palace of the Winds, Jaipur

Johari Bazar

Head for lunch via Johari Bazar (you can walk there from the Palace of the Winds). Here is a fab place to buy souvenirs; the street specializes in jewelry, clothing, craft-work and art. It’s a bustling, busy area and there are plenty of places to get yourself a good deal! For lunch, restaurants are hard to come by, but there is a fab place called Jain Patang Udyog  on the Haldion Ka Rasta street just off the main street. It serves Dal ki kachori with chatni, a local delicacy.

Johari Bazar

Jantar Mantar

After lunch head to the Jantar Mantar . This is a collection of astrological instruments all built to tell the time, from seconds to months to the year. The location is a UNESCO site and features the world’s largest sundial. The instruments are all still in working order, and it is fascinating to learn how the concept of time was developed. You can get a tour on the door from a registered tour guide, costing from 50-100 rupees per person depending on group size. It is definitely worth paying for a guide here as otherwise you will not gain insight into how the instruments actually work, although they are amazing just to look at, as well!

Jantar Mantar, Jaipur

The Jantar Mantar is situated next to the City Palace . Entry into the palace is quite expensive, however if you don’t want to go in you can have a quick look! It is also all within a walking distance from the Palace of the Winds and Johari Bazar.

City Palace, Jaipur

It’s best to hire a driver to Amer Fort , although you can get a tuk tuk here too! If you get a driver, they will be able to organize a tour guide for you, who you pay in tips. Alternatively, you can get an elephant ride up to the fort.

Amer Fort Entrance, Jaipur

However, these run in the mornings only, so you would have to rearrange the day. Amer Fort is the one place where it would be recommended more than anywhere to get a tour guide ! The fort itself is amazing to look at and the view from it is amazing, too. But the architectural genius of this place is like no other, and to learn about this you need a tour guide!

Amer Fort, Jaipur

From the design of the palace with hidden corridors so that the king’s 9 wives never had to cross paths; to the different bedrooms for summer and winter depending on the light; to the water pipe system that saved water for drought and is still in working condition today! There are so many wonderful photo opportunities and there is so much to see and learn, Amer Fort is a must see in Jaipur!

Amer Fort, Jaipur

Amer Fort Light Show

End the day under Amer Fort watching the spectacular light and sound show which tells the story of Jaipur. Tickets are 200 rupees, and the show lasts around 45 minutes.

Where to stay in Jaipur?

Umaid mahal – heritage style hotel.

Book your stay in the Umaid Mahal – Heritage Style Hotel  or one of its counterparts (it is part of a small chain). It is a fab, authentic hotel with great breakfast, a small pool that is nice for a quick dip in the morning, plus the price is very reasonable. The best thing about the hotel is its décor. The outside is one big mosaic, and the inside is furnished with traditional furniture in a true Jaipur style . It also has a rooftop restaurant which had the best chicken tikka pizza going.

DAY TRIPS FROM JAIPUR

India is a country of immense cultural wealth, and no matter where you turn you will see something incredible. However, some sights deserve your attention more than others, so take them into consideration when planning your day trip from Jaipur.

If you have the time and energy, Agra as a destination is a no-brainer. Yes, it will take you more than three hours to get there, but the payoff is huge. The city is home to two fabled UNESCO World Heritage Sites – Agra Fort and the majestic Taj Mahal . The sensation you get when you first see these monumental buildings is indescribable, and you will immediately forget about the ride here.

Ranthambore

For animal-lovers, Ranthambore is something they absolutely must visit. This beautiful national park is a great getaway from the city crowds, and since you get a chance to see tigers and leopards in their natural habitat, the idea of this day trip becomes even more enticing. Head out on a safari and enjoy a day you will never forget.

Ajmer is a city about two hours from Jaipur, and it has loads of sights to visit. From the incredible Lal Mandir with its golden interior to  Ajmer Sharif Dargah , a shrine dedicated to  a revered saint, you will have more than enough to see and explore. Just don’t forget to leave some time to go and visit Pushkar , a small town on Ajmer’s outskirts, where a sacred lake is located.

Chand Baori

Hands down, Chand Baori is the most beautiful stepwell in India. Numerous steps were created on its three sides, with an impressive pavilion on the fourth. Seeing this is like entering a fantasy movie or something like that, and if you want some photos that will make everyone back home jealous, this is the place to take them. After that, don’t forget to visit Bhangarh , a fort that is supposedly cursed and haunted by restless spirits.

Sanganer is the perfect place to do some souvenir shopping. It is very close to Jaipur and is completely dedicated to producing its unique fabrics which you can actually have printed out right there and then. It is also an important town for Jains, who have their temples scattered all over the place. Shopping and a bit of culture, doesn’t sound bad, now does it?

Extra tips for visiting Jaipur?

– Accept the fact that in Jaipur you are going to be paying foreigner admission prices which will cost a great deal more than for locals. Despite this, prices are all very reasonable!

– If you do have any extra time, hire a car and go watch the sunset from Nahargarh Fort , which is a short drive from Amer Fort. The view covers the whole city and the palace up there is worth a visit too.

City Palace, Jaipur

City Palace, Jaipur Trocals

Discover an elegant and historical world by visiting the world-famous City Palace in Jaipur. Constructed during the vision of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh between 1729 and 1732, the city’s royal history stands alive with this architectural wonder.

This palace was also modified many times in its original appearance, but it had a strong outer wall belonging to Jai Singh II . For example, some of them took place in the twentieth century and prove that the palace has the capacity to transform while keeping its historical spirit.

The City Palace itself covers an overwhelming one-seventh of Jaipur’s walled city, and is not merely an architectural showpiece. It was, once, the center of power, where the Maharajas of Jaipur lived.

It is an example of exquisite design in that it has been carefully thought through with numerous yards, buildings and garden all speaking volumes about royal life. The architectural tapestry of Jaipur incorporates the wisdom of Shilpa Shastra with the gracefulness of Rajput, Mughal and European styles.

Fashioned from the radiant red and pink sandstone, the palace boasts three majestic gates: three main gates, including the Tripolia Gate, Udai Pol and Virendra Pol. The inner courtyards, lush gardens, and grand buildings that are revealed in each step are awesome.

The City Palace, therefore, does not constitute any commonplace structure, but rather a lively canvas of architecture, visual artistry and creativity, embodying the very spirit of Jaipur.

The Hawa Mahal, Jaipur

The Hawa Mahal, Jaipur Trocals

The Hawa Mahal is an exceptional building located in the midst of Jaipur, on the crossroad that links Badi Chaupad with a lively marketplace. This architectural jewell is a tribute to Rajputana greatness and has become the emblem of Jaipur as well as an iconic symbol worldwide. You need to avail a private cab to navigate through the complex maze of the city that shall ultimately take you to this magnificent creation constructed by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799.

But what’s in a name? For Hawa Mahal, it’s everything. The palace gets its moniker from its ingenious design: The walls feature many small windows which allow the refreshing breezes to flow inside, thus serving as natural air conditioning during the heat of the season. Its red and pink sandstone facade is unique that gives the building a majestic appearance.

The palace extends more than just its frontiers, each of its five levels featuring different and luxuriously decorated rooms. The building’s shape resembles a pyramid with numerous delicate windows that are like an array of glittering gems in a royal diadem.

Once inside, an elegant fountain is presented to set the ambiance of opulence within. In fact, this apartment has no stairs; instead, one gets to upper floors by using ramps. There is a rewarding panorama of the City Palace, Jantar Mantar along with the lively bazaar known as SirehDeori Bazaar from the top.

In addition, the palace grounds have a small museum that displays artifacts and beautiful miniature paintings. You can take part of Jaipur back with you if you have shopping desires around Hawa Mahal.

Tip for Travelers:

Visit the Hawa Mahal for a moment. Feel the breeze, take in the scenery, and lose yourself in the peaceful atmosphere. It involves experiencing as well as seeing.

Jantar Mantar, Jaipur Trocals

The Jantar Mantar stands tall, inviting with its ancient secrets and heavenly beauty as we continue our one-day exploration of Jaipur. Its grandeur is unmatched, and it is known as the largest stone ideal place in the world.

Nineteen exceptional tools made of stone and brass are nestled inside its walls. Each instrument is a testament to the brilliance of Raja Sawai Jai Singh, who ordered the building of this observation tower among 1727 and 1733; they are not merely decorative items. The Jantar Mantar, which took an incredible five years to build, effort to comprehend is a great indicator of humanity’s lengthy the universe.

Surprisingly, the accuracy of these instruments enables astute observers to follow celestial bodies using only their naked eyes. They act as silent witnesses to the knowledge and skill of a bygone era, when the mind was captivated by the mysteries of space and time.

The tools here operate on 3 separate celestial exact location, allowing them to precisely track celestial movements. They have been modeled after Ptolemaic astronomy of ancient Egypt.

But what about the prize? The largest sundial in by that same world is proudly displayed, unmoved passing years.  It is more than just a tool; it is a symbol of the tenacious spirit of innovation and scientific inquiry.

Jantar Mantar is an architectural masterpiece that greatly exceeds its sister celestial objects in northern India, in addition to its scientific wonders.

Tip for Visitors:

Get your cameras ready! Photographers can play in the mix of symmetrical and fanciful structures as they capture the geometry, light, and shadow dance. Without appreciating this cosmic masterpiece, a trip to Jaipur would be incomplete.

Birla Temple, Jaipur

Birla Temple, Jaipur Trocals

The Birla Temple, perched atop Moti Dungri Hill, is waiting for us as we continue our journey through Jaipur. It was built in 1988 thanks to the Birla family and is a relatively recent addition to the city’s rich tapestry. But despite echoing with nearly a century customs, its immaculate white stone structure feels timeless.

This temple is an example of how elegant modern design can coexist with tradition architectural principles. The walls of this building come to life as you move throughout its halls, sharing tales from of the Puranas and Upanishads. But what sets it apart is its comprehensive attitude; in addition to manifestations of Hindu deities, you’ll also find pictures of world figures and spiritual figures like Socrates, Christ, Buddha, and Confucius. The Birla Temple stands out due to its seamless fusion of the sacred and the instructional.

The captivating Laxmi Narayan idol, which was carefully carved from a single stone block, is the focal point of the temple. This sanctuary comes to life, especially all over Janmashtami, when devotees swarm here in great numbers, heightening the reverent atmosphere.

Highlight for Visitors:

Don’t ignore the ethereal Ganesha idol. It appears almost transparent in the calm luminance of the temple. Birla Temple guarantees a sublime experience, regardless of whether you’re seeking divinity or are simply an appreciator of artworks.

Albert Museum Hall, Jaipur

Albert Museum Hall, Jaipur Trocals

The Albert Museum Hall, a monument to the state’s illustrious past and structural prowess, is hidden away in the center of Rajasthan. The Prince of Wales, Albert Edward, is able to take responsibility for the name of the museum, which is a shining example of both history and art.

However, the museum transforms at night, drawing attention beyond its splendor during the day. It exudes an ethereal beauty and, against the darkness of the night sky, is bathed in a golden glow from the glistening yellow lights.

The exhibition unfolds as soon as you step inside like a treasure chest. Intricate carpets, ornate pottery, and old coins all can be discovered in its galleries, together with works of exquisite marble art. The Albert Museum Hall is like entering a time capsule for those who love history and art, with each artifact telling a story from a previous era.

Though the museum’s collection would then undoubtedly enthral you, don’t forget to ogle its magnificent structure. By raising your gaze, you can admire the Indo-Saracenic domes’ wonder and the subtle natural stone arches’ carvings. More than just a gallery, The Albert Museum Hall honors Rajasthan’s brilliant past.

Jal Mahal, Jaipur

Jal Mahal, Jaipur Trocals

The Jal Mahal is tucked away from Jaipur’s busy streets and stands as a serene oasis within the tranquil confines of Man Sagar Lake. Its remote location, about 7 km from the city center, might seem a little far, but with a private rental cab, the trip becomes a magical experience.

This beautiful palace, which once served as a hunting lodge for the Maharajas, is a tasteful fusion of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles. Although access to the palace’s interior is limited, just seeing its stunning façade reflected in the still waters of the lake is breathtaking.

As evening approaches, the Jal Mahal changes. The palace and its reflection against the dusk sky make for a mesmerizing scene as they are bathed in a soft, golden light. Photographers and couples alike are drawn in by this ethereal scene, with the palace glistening amid the waters as the perfect backdrop.

Because of its beauty and serenity, the Jal Mahal is a must-see Jaipur treasure even though it is a little off the beaten path.

Amber Fort, Jaipur

This fort guards Jaipur with its imposing walls and regal aura, bearing witness to the splendor of Mewari history. It is a testament to a appellate court that that the this cultural marvel holds that it receives more than 5,000 visitors per day.

The fort, endorsed by Maharaja Man Singh in the 16th century and largely constructed of pink and yellow schist, is a memorial to the achieving high and opulence of the era. You can choose to ascend in style on an elephant as you get closer, or for those looking for a closer encounter, a walk up the hill provides amazing views around every corner.

There are four main segments to the castle itself, each with its own entrance and courtyard. It is a large complex. Within its boundary lines, a number of palaces lie in wait, each telling a story from the past.

Don’t skip the daily show at Amber Fort. A captivating light and sound show folds tales of valour, love, and intrigue to bring the fort’s esteemed past to life. It’s anything more than a a show; it’s a trip though the history.

Sunset at Surya Mandir

Sunset at Surya Mandir

The serene Surya Mandir is perched on a hill, offering a panoramic view of the enormous city of Jaipur. This temple, which is a part of the larger Galta Ji temple complex, is a subdued reminder of the devotion and artistic brilliance of a bygone era. It was originally built in the 18th century and served as a trusted courtier of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II’s private sanctuary.

But more than just its past is fascinating. The temple, which is 200 meters above Jaipur, provides breath-taking panoramic views. The city below comes to life as the sun sinks below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of crimson and gold, creating an unparalleled sight to behold. This ethereal view and the temple’s tranquil atmosphere provide a much-needed break from the hectic pace of the city, making it a haven for people looking for both spirituality and solitude.

Jaipur Itinerary – How To Spend 1 Day In Jaipur

Posted on Last updated: 25 April 2024

Categories India , Itineraries

The capital of Rajasthan State, the large city of Jaipur is located in the north west of India. Home to more than 4 million people it is also known as the ‘Pink City’.

This name dates back hundreds of years to when the then Maharaja had all the buildings painted pink (the colour of hospitality) in preparation for a royal visitor from Great Britain.

Today, the city is known for its amazing forts, temples, palaces, as well as busy bazaars and wildlife sanctuaries.

Building a one day in Jaipur itinerary is tough, with so much to see and do. So we’ve narrowed it down to all the best parts.

Table of Contents

How To Get Around Jaipur

Before we start, if you’re looking for transfers between Agra and Jaipur, you can secure a cheap and easy One way City Transfer To/From Agra and Jaipur .

Also once you’re finished in Jaipur, if you’re looking to move onto Jodhpur, Delhi or Agra, you can secure a cheap and easy Private Transfer to Jodhpur, Delhi or Agra From Jaipur .

Getting around Jaipur couldn’t be easier. There are generally 4 options:

With a population of around 3.5 million people, Jaipur is a city full of pedestrians.

And with the population density bursting at the seams, this means traffic, congestion, and crowds.

So there are many times you will get to places faster on foot, than by vehicle.

The Old City is well laid out, and its many sights and shopping areas aren’t too far apart, making walking around the centre your best option.

Taxi/Tuk Tuk

Jumping in a rickshaw (tuk tuk) is a great option if your legs are feeling tired.

Quick trips are usually cheap and shouldn’t cost more than 50 rupees, but be sure to negotiate a price before getting in the vehicle.

Regular taxi’s are available and should operate on a metre.

App-based taxi services like Uber and Ola also operate in Jaipur.

A perfect example of this is the Jaipur: Private Customised City Tour .

With this option you get an air conditioned vehicle and a driver for the day, and get to see the best of Jaipur in a private, customisable 8-hour tour.

Simply tell your driver which sites you’d like to visit, and enjoy complete flexibility as you visit forts, museums, bazaars, and anything else that interests you.

Some of the best days out we’ve had in Jaipur have been on private tours.

There’s even a Jaipur: Instagram Tour of The Best Photography Spots . For those that wish to capture all the magic of Jaipur through a lens.

For those short on time, or that prefer everything to be organised for them, there are some awesome tours on Get Your Guide available to book in advance.

From food tours, to river rides and walking tours, there’s plenty to keep you busy in the bustling city!

Also, if you are planning on visiting a few of the tourist attraction in Jaipur, it’s worth purchasing the Jaipur: Skip-the-Line Entry Ticket to 8 Attractions pass.

This allows you to visit 8 of the city’s most popular attractions including Amber Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Nahargarh Fort, Albert Hall, Isarlat, and Sisodia Rani Garden at a fraction of the price.

Best Time To Visit Jaipur

Jaipur is a desert city and can experiences quite extreme weather conditions, so you bear that in mind when planning your visit.

Summer season is from April to August with temperatures getting up to a very warm 42°C.

Winter starts around mid November through until the end of February. With temperatures at what some people would call a pleasant 24°C during the day, with much cooler nights for sleeping.

Remember, this is just a guide, so you may want to mix it up and add/subtract different attractions. However, Jaipur is on most people’s India itinerary .

Jaipur Itinerary Day 1

The Old City is probably the best place to start your one day in Jaipur itinerary.

It’s centrally located and is close to most accommodations, as well as one of the top things to do in India .

With so much to see and do in Jaipur in a day, this centrally located spot makes for the ideal starting location.

Hawa Mahal, also known as ‘the Palace of Winds’, is a red and pink sandstone palace in Jaipur, and the city’s most famous landmark.

The honeycomb-looking structure sits on the edge of the City Palace, and extends to the Zenana, or women’s chambers.

It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh, who was the founder of Jaipur.

The structure has 953 windows on the outside walls. The purpose of the windows was to allow ladies of the palace to watch the outside world without being seen.

The entrance fee for the Hawa Mahal is 200 Rupees for foreigners, and 50 Rupees for Indian nationals.

However, if you plan on visiting a couple of attractions in Jaipur we highly recommend grabbing the Jaipur: Skip-the-Line Entry Ticket to 8 Attractions . Making your entrance fees and queuing a lot less painful.

There are also a couple of 2-story cafe’s opposite the Hawa Mahal like Wind View Cafe and Tattoo Cafe & Lounge. These are extremely popular with tourists, and even locals, who want to capture the incredible views of Hawa Mahal and the streets below.

So be sure to not only add the Hawa Mahal to your one day in Jaipur itinerary, but to grab lunch in one of the cafe’s opposite too!

Wind View Cafe Hawa Mahal View Cafe One Day In Jaipur Itinerary Jaipur In A Day

City Palace

Just around the corner from Hawa Mahal, the stunning City Palace makes sense to add as your second stop on your one day in Jaipur itinerary.

It stands right in the centre of the Old City.

It is a complex made up of courtyards, gardens, buildings, a temple and a museum.

The grounds are spread over a large area, making up one seventh of the Old City of Jaipur.

Within these ground there are palace buildings from different eras, some dating from the early 20th century. All of which displaying a blend of both Rajasthani and Mughal architecture.

For those that are into art and history, the City Palace is absolute paradise.

You can purchase locally made souvenirs at the palace shops too. They have traditional paintings made from organic colours and wooden replicas of the monuments. It is the perfect way to take a memory back home.

The City Palace is open from 9:00am – 5:00pm.

Entrance to the City Palace is 500 Rupees for foreigners, and 130 Rupees for Indian nationals.

You also have to pay an extra 50 Rupees for a photography permit, and 150 Rupees for videography.

Wind View Cafe Hawa Mahal View Cafe One Day In Jaipur Itinerary Jaipur In A Day

Next up on the Jaipur in a day route is Amber Fort.

The fort is located roughly 20 minutes northeast of Jaipur’s city centre, so this is where your Private Customised City Tour can come in handy.

If you’re on a budget, you can take one of the frequent buses that depart from Hawa Mahal. They can be super crowded but will only cost you 15 Rupees.

Alternatively, it’s possible to take a rickshaw, costing about 500 Rupees for a return trip.

Amber Fort is one of the most well-known and most-visited forts in India, so is a must on your one day in Jaipur itinerary.

Made out of sandstone and marble, Amber Fort consists of a series of four courtyards, palaces, halls, and gardens.

In the entrance lies the primary courtyard, known as Jaleb Chowk. This is where the king’s soldiers would assemble and parade themselves around.

Entrance to the fort is 500 rupees for foreigners, and 100 rupees for Indian nationals. Again, another reason to purchase the entry ticket to 8 attractions.

This beautiful fort along with Nahargarh Fort and Jaigarh Fort, once formed a strong defence for the city of Jaipur.

Amber Fort is open daily, from 8am until 5.30pm. So be sure to wander around all of the grounds, and learn all about the interesting history whilst you’re there.

Another spot you cannot miss is the Amber Fort viewpoint across the road.

You’ll have to climb many steps to reach the top, however the panoramic view of the fort and surrounding areas is truly incredible.

Amber Fort Jaipur One Day In Jaipur Itinerary Jaipur In A Day

Nahargarh Fort

Last but not least, we recommend heading to Nahargarh Fort for sunset.

Nahargarh Fort was built in 1734 by the Hindu Rajput ruler, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II.

He was the founder of Jaipur, and chose to build the fort up in the Aravalli Hills to use as a retreat place and a home for his 9 wives. Each wife had a similar section of the fort.

The hike up from the foot of the hill to Nahargarh Fort itself took around 30 minutes.

Entrance fee is 200 Rupees for foreigners, and 50 Rupees for Indian nationals. Nahargarh Fort is also included in the entry ticket to 8 attractions.

Following the winding path, we were a little hot and bothered, however had heard such great things about the views from the top, and we were not disappointed!

Upon arrival at the entrance, we passed plenty of smiling locals, and a few roaming bulls. We soon realised it was a good break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Although nothing on the Taj Mahal , the Fort is located on the hillside, and still looks out over the entire pink city of Jaipur.

Nahargarh Fort should absolutely be on your one day in Jaipur itinerary because of the incredible panoramic view of the city and possibly the best place in Jaipur for sunset.

Of course, you won't be able to see everything Jaipur has to offer in such a short time frame, but you can certainly get a taste of what this incredible city has to offer. So if you're thinking about visiting Jaipur, don't wait - go see this amazing city for yourself!

Insight: This guide has been written to provide a suggested itinerary for a 1 day visit to Jaipur, which will include only the most popular and best sections of the city.

Getting Started

The day will be divided into two parts; the first section visits the city centre of Jaipur and the second part travels to the Amer fort and the Jal Mahal. If you wish to ride an elephant up to Amer fort then the palace must be visited in the morning, as the elephants can only perform a set number of trips per day. The second section of the day (Amer fort) requires a taxi or rickshaw, as is 8km outside of the city centre.

Quick Overview

Morning - Jaipur city and visiting: • City Palace • The Hawa Mahal (palace of winds) • Jantar Mantar • The pink city walls

Afternoon - Around Jaipur • Amer Fort • Jal Mahal (Water Palace) • Sunset at Surya Mandir (Sun Temple)

Jaipur 1 day Itinerary – Morning

For the morning itinerary, it is suggested to exploring the historic centre of Jaipur, which is often referred to as the Pink City. Jaipur is a chaotic mix of sights, sounds and smells, all of this can be very draining for visitors new to India especially when combined with the intense heat of the dry season. Thankfully all of the main tourist sights are close together and Jaipur follows a grid/block layout so is simple to navigate. Highlights of the morning include:

The magnificent City Palace, which is the home of the Maharaja, and is one of the most fascinating places in Jaipur. The palace was constructed by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, in 1727.

This sprawling complex is a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture, and includes a series of wonderous courtyards, gardens and buildings. The Chandra Mahal, Mubarak Mahal, Maharani's Palace, Shri Govind Dev Temple and City Palace Museum. It is one of the best-preserved examples of Rajasthani architecture and gives visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle of the royal family.

There is a lot to see in the palace so expect to expend between 1-2 hours here. The City Palace is open every day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Last entry is at 4:30 pm. Admission tickets can be purchased at the ticket office inside the complex.

The City Palace of Jaipur

The Hawa Mahal, a multi windowed, lattice like façade of the City Palace which is best viewed from the Siredeori Bazaar. From the small windows the wives of the Maharaja could spy daily life without being seen by the commoners. The lattice work played another useful feature as it channelled up the cooler air and provided a constant breeze in the state rooms, hence the name of the Place of the winds. It does not take long to view the Hawa Mahal as only the exterior is worthy of a visit.

The pink city walls of Jaipur

While walking between the city Palace, the Hawa Mahal and the Jantar Mantar take time to view the city walls and ornate city gates. All of the buildings within this central district are painted a uniform terracotta pink colour, which represent power and welcoming.

The Hawa Mahal, Palace of Winds

The Jantar Mantar is the third sight of the morning and should only be visited if there is sufficient time. The Jantar Mantar are a series of astronomical instruments used by the Mogul’s to predict the future. The stand out feature is the world’s largest sun dial, where the actual movement of the sun can be seen (6cm per minute at midday)

Jaipur 1 day itinerary Afternoon

The Amer Fort is one of the most import fortifications in Rajasthan and combines impenetrable defences with intricate marble detail. As you approach Amer Fort, you can't help but be awestruck by its size and scope. Rising high above the surrounding landscape, the fort is a wonderous sight to behold. And it's not just the exterior that is impressive.

Once you step inside, you'll find yourself transported back in time, to an era of opulence and luxury. Every detail has been carefully preserved, from the intricate carvings on the walls to the lavish furnishings in the palace rooms. Even if you're not particularly interested in history, Amer Fort is well worth a visit. It's a truly remarkable place that you won't soon forget.

The Amer for is the highlight of Jaipur and sufficient time should be provided to explore this wonderful palace. The fort is 7km north of Jaipur and an auto rickshaw or taxi is required for the journey from the centre of Jaipur.

The stunning Amber Fort complex

On the return from Amer fort stop to view the Jal Mahal, the water palace. The palace was constructed as a duck hunting lodge by the Maharaja in the 18th century and appears to be floating on the still waters of Lake Sagar. The palace can only be viewed from the banks of the lake so only takes around 20 minutes to view.

The beautiful Jal Mahal

The final suggestion for the afternoon is watching the sunset over Jaipur from the Sun Temple (Surya Mandir). The location of the temple provides panoramic views of Jaipur and on a clear day the city is bathed in golden by the setting sun, and there are monkeys to feed!

India Ramps Up Its Promotion as a Wedding Destination – India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

May 6th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

Indian weddings mean big money. The Indian government is aiming to harness India's cultural diversity and vast offerings to promote the country as the preferred domestic and international wedding destination.

Bulbul Dhawan

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

India is actively promoting itself as the next big wedding destination. At the first “Wed in India” Expo ongoing in Jaipur till Wednesday, tourism ministry official Manisha Saxena said that the rapid infrastructure development across India is aiding destination weddings.

PM Modi’s Call: The call for Wed In India was first made by Indian Prime Minister Modi in November last year. According to Modi “wed in India” would help boost the economy if Indians hosted their weddings within their country. Skift Research’s survey reveals that Indian destination weddings have created a thriving market, estimated at $1.9 billion (INR 159.6 billion) in outbound travel spending.

“Indians, both in the country and the diaspora globally, are getting more prosperous. Better to spend more in our own country to benefit our own people and economy. That’s why ‘Wed in India’ is a great initiative,” said SK Pathak, FICCI secretary general at the first-ever Wed in India expo.

The expo was hosted not just to encourage Indians to host their weddings within the country but to make India the “world’s wedding destination.”

Who are participating: Policymakers, stakeholders from the tourism and hospitality industry and tour operators from over 50 countries are participating in the “Wed in India” expo.

Wedding venue: Saxena spoke about states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Haryana, Kerala, and Goa which are already popular destinations for Wed-in-India. She also spoke about the Northeast emerging as a preferred destination.

Why Rajasthan: Rajasthan, where the expo is currently ongoing, has long been a preferred destination for celebrity weddings due to its luxurious and opulent settings. The state’s magnificent palaces forts and havelis converted into luxury heritage hotels provide a regal backdrop for extravagant celebrations.

Hotel infrastructure: Fairmont Jaipur and Raffles Udaipur in Rajasthan are known to be among the most prominent luxury wedding venues in India. Accor is now also bringing a Raffles to Jaipur and a Fairmont to Udaipur. Hilton has also selected Jaipur as the city for the launch of its Waldorf Astoria brand in India due to the city’s ability to attract high-end weddings .

Speakers also spoke about the readiness of India’s wedding ecosystem, the dynamics of wedding tourism and its impact on India’s larger tourism industry.

India, a 365-day destination: Underlining that India is 365-day destination, Saxena said, “India is not just a six-month destination from October to March. It is actually a 365-day destination. We have just launched an initiative called ‘Coolcation’ to dispel the myth that summers are hot in India. There are some cool pockets in India too.”

The business of Indian weddings: Skift earlier reported that in the November-December wedding season of 2023, 3.5 million couples got married in India, spending a cumulative amount of $57 billion. There is an emerging trend of booking luxury hotels and resorts to host extravagant weddings.

TBO Tek IPO to Open This Week

Travel distribution company TBO Tek is set to go public this week , with its IPO scheduled for May 8. The company aims to raise INR 15.5 billion ($180 million) , including a fresh issue of INR 4 billion ($48 million).

TBO, which serves as a one-stop hub for travel agents to book various travel services including flights and hotels, has not had to reveal a lot about its business so far. Its IPO prospectus, however, reveals that its platform allows agents to access over 750 airlines and more than a million hotels globally.

The prospectus also reveals that B2B rates and commissions are the two main sources of revenue for the IPO-bound company. The company has several business verticals, including an online learning platform for travel agents, a booker rewards program, and a mobile-first corporate travel platform.

Air India to Start Direct Delhi-Zurich Flights in June

Air India is set to commence direct flights between Delhi and Zurich starting June 16. The carrier will operate on the route four times a week. This marks Air India’s entry into Switzerland, and with this, the airline now flies to seven destinations in mainland Europe.

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said, “With over 250 Swiss companies operating in India, hundreds of Indian companies in Switzerland,  and a growing Indian diaspora of nearly 18,000, these flights will cater to a strong demand for business  and leisure travel in both directions. Switzerland, a consistently top-ranking European destination for Indian tourists, will now be even more accessible.”

The airline is attempting an overhaul as it prepares for its merger with sister carrier Vistara. Wilson aims to restore Air India into a “top-tier and world-class airline”. As part of this, it is planning international expansion. The airline will operate direct flights from Delhi to Ho Chi Minh City from June, and is planning to add more destinations to its network.

Sarovar Hotels Opens V Sarovar Portico in Jaipur

Sarovar Hotels has announced the opening of V Sarovar Portico Jaipur in Rajasthan. The 106-key property is Sarovar’s sixth property in the city.

For Sarovar, Bangalore, Lucknow, and Jaipur are focus areas in India after emerging as hubs in the past few years, managing director Ajay Bakaya told Skift .

The hotel chain has more than 120 operational hotels across 75 destinations worldwide, and is expecting to have 125 operational properties in India by the end of 2024 . It also has 70 to 80 hotels in its pipeline, and by the end of 2025, it is looking at 150 operational hotels in its India portfolio.

IndiGo Doubles Frequency of Delhi-Phuket Direct Flights

Budget carrier IndiGo has doubled its frequency of direct flights between Delhi and Thailand’s Phuket. Starting June 1, the airline will operate 14 weekly flights between the two cities instead of the current seven flights a week.

These are in addition to the seven weekly flights that the airline operates between Delhi and Bangkok, said IndiGo global sales head Vinay Malhotra.

IndiGo’s move has come on the heels of Air India’s decision to operate additional direct flights between Delhi and Phuket starting June 1. Full service airline Air India already flies daily direct flights between the two cities, and earlier this month, announced its plans to add a second direct flight six days a week.

India is one of the most important source markets for Thailand , and in 2023, more than 1.6 million Indian travelers visited Thailand.

EaseMyTrip Unveils Explore Bharat Initiative

Online travel company EaseMyTrip has unveiled the EXPLORE Bharat initiative at the Arabian Travel Market 2024. With this initiative, the online agency aims to promote the culture, heritage, festivals, and offbeat destinations of India among travelers from the United Arab Emirates and the Middle East region.

The initiative is EaseMyTrip’s effort towards promoting India as a top travel destination and showcasing its diverse offerings to a global audience, said co-founder Rikant Pittie. “The Arabian travel industry is witnessing remarkable growth, driven by factors such as technological advancements, evolving consumer preferences, and a renewed focus on sustainable travel.”
