nurse practitioner travel positions

Travel Nurse Practitioner | Jobs & Salary 2023 – Updated

As the primary care provider shortage continues to rise, there is a growing need for traveling nurse practitioners.

What is a Travel Nurse Practitioner?

Travel nurse practitioners are also called locum tenens providers. This means they are filling a temporary staffing need. This can be for a variety of reasons: maternity leave coverage, patient overflow, or filling a recent retiree position while full-time recruiting is underway. Some hospitals and clinics will even hire travel nurse practitioners for vacation coverage and sick leave. Some facilities will hire travel nurse practitioners before hiring on a full-time basis. This means the facility wants to test out the provider before hiring them permanently.

Looking for open travel nurse assignments? Speak with a recruiter today!

The types of assignments vary as a travel nurse practitioner and are dependent on your skill set. Common workplace locations can include the following:

  • Emergency room
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Community health centers
  • Urgent care
  • School health centers
  • Doctors’ offices
  • Pediatric clinics
  • Indian health services
  • Senior care centers
  • Home health offices
  • Air force bases

Travel nurse practitioners receive housing stipends and travel cost reimbursement, which means practitioners basically get to explore new places for free. The biggest advantage to becoming a travel nurse practitioner, similar to becoming a travel nurse , is you also get paid more than you would as a permanent employee.

One downside to becoming a travel nurse practitioner is constantly looking for a new position every few months and new living arrangements . Some may see this as a negative while others may look forward to living somewhere new every few months. The flexibility is great since you don’t have to work holidays and can take as much time off as you want.

Another plus is you are constantly learning and will become more competent working in different clinical settings. When you are ready to settle down as a full-time employee, your resume will certainly stand out!

Here’s a quick guide to becoming a traveling nurse practitioner.

How to Become a Travel Nurse Practitioner

Nurse practitioner education.

Becoming a travel nurse practitioner takes time and significant education. First, you must become an RN by passing the NCLEX and earning your BSN . After gaining the proper experience as a bedside nurse, you will need to apply to an accredited nurse practitioner program. After completing the program and earning state certification in your specialty, you can work as a travel nurse practitioner.

Nurse Practitioner Experience

While you can get a position as a travel nurse practitioner without any prior experience, it can be difficult and there will be limited options available. Most positions require a minimum of 2 to 3 years of prior NP experience. For positions in the ER or ICU, the requirement might even be longer.

If you are a new graduate and interested in becoming a travel nurse practitioner, make sure to ask about the orientation process. Most employers will accept a new graduate as long as they make a relatively long commitment (at least 6 months). The orientation process will most likely be lengthy though.

Near or far – find the right travel nurse assignment for you.

Nurse Practitioner Licensing

To work in various states, you have to obtain both the RN and ARNP licensure for that state. Some states may also have a third license you will need to apply for in order to prescribe medications. It is also necessary to register your DEA certificate with the state you plan on working in for the ability to prescribe controlled substances.

Depending on the state, the licensing process can take 2 weeks to 6 months. Many states offer temporary licenses, which allow you to start working while your permanent license is being processed. Some staffing agencies will assist in the licensing process.

Nurse Practitioner Clinical Settings

Travel nurse practitioners can work in a variety of healthcare settings. Job opportunities will depend on a multitude of factors. According to the BLS , the job outlook for nurse practitioners is 46%. There is an overwhelming need for NPs throughout the country in many healthcare settings. Travel nurse practitioners help fill the void.

Finding Travel Nurse Practitioner Jobs

There are several key steps to finding a travel nurse practitioner position. Finding your first position is typically the hardest and most time-consuming. It gets easier with time and experience. Follow these key steps to help land your dream travel nurse practitioner position:

  • Establish a relationship with a recruiter from a staffing agency (establish relationships with multiple agencies to increase job options)
  • Determine the locations you are interested in traveling to, the type of facility you want to work in, and salary expectations
  • A staffing agency will provide you with a list of job opportunities
  • Determine which job you are interested in and have the recruiter submit your resume
  • If the facility is interested, they will usually request a phone interview within the next few days
  • After the phone interview, the employer will make an offer within 24 hours
  • Upon accepting an assignment, you will need to sign a contract dictating the terms of the assignment which may be negotiable
  • Start credentialing and the onboarding process

Travel Nurse Practitioner Jobs FAQ

Travel nurse practitioners can work as travel nurses. All NPs also are required to maintain an active RN license in the state they are working in. Some facilities will not want to hire a travel nurse that has an NP license for this reason.

Yes, travel nursing as a nurse practitioner is very much a thing! Travel NPs have the ability to make a significant amount of money in a very short period of time. You also get to travel the country and experience new and exciting locations all while working at a facility of your choosing.

How Female Practitioners In Moscow View Their Profession: A Pilot Study

Katerina Tsetsura

"This study examined how female practitioners’ discourses shape perceptions of public relations as an emerging field in Russia. Interviews with 25 practitioners from Moscow public relations agencies showed that a prism of a real job and a woman’s job can help explain how socio-economic, professional, and genderdefined contexts influence practitioners’ perceptions of public relations and provided evidence for understanding public relations as a socially constructed gendered profession. The study found that Russian women construct their professional identities in gendered ways that may limit their career opportunities."

PurposeThis paper aims to analyse the current literature on women in public relations to establish trends and areas of inquiry in the literature and identify research gaps for future research.Design/methodology/approachA total of 223 articles have been empirically analysed using thematic analysis to identify trends in the existing literature. The data has been coded and analysed per decade (1982–1989, 1990–1999, 2000–2009, 2010–2019). The articles have been identified by searching major journals in the field of public relations and communications, as well as snowballing from identified articles.FindingsThe results show that the majority of academic articles have been produced by using lived experiences of women working in the public relations industry and thus reflect the professional situation of female public relations employees. The results show that the position of women has reached a full circle in four decades of research and returned to the discriminatory work environment. Fi...

It has been well established that Public Relations is a gendered industry, evidenced by the number of women working in the industry has grown considerably in the past decades (CIPR State of the Profession Report 2015; Verhoeven & Aarts 2010; Fitch & Third 2010; Daymon & Demetrious 2010; Wyatt 2013; Aldoory & Toth 2002). However, even though Public Relations is a predominantly female industry, female practitioners face obstacles in achieving equality with their male colleagues. The most common problems are the wage gap and the glass ceiling (Grunig et al 2001; Place 2015; Merchant 2012; Fröhlich and Peters 2007).

Amanda Third , Kate Fitch

Women make up the majority of public relations practitioners, suggesting that the liberal-feminist battle for workplace equality has been won. Analysing scholarship on the gendering of public relations, which began to emerge in the 1980s, this paper examines how the dual processes of feminisation and professionalisation mutually reinscribe one another in ways that reproduce the patriarchal gender relations underpinning the public relations industry. Recent Australian examples demonstrate the impact of the gendering of public relations and the need for greater attention to, and reflexivity about, gender issues in public relations by both the industry and by scholars.

Miracles of St. Matrona in Our Days

Stories from letters to the editors of pravoslavie.ru.

“ Of course she helped me, and not just once!”

The most important moments in my life:

—Through her holy prayers, I obtained my own apartment in my favorite region of Moscow (there was a real possibility of having to move to another end of the city).

—I found a very good job, my dream job (this was twelve years ago, but I am still working here!).

I went out during one of our lunch breaks for a stroll, and prayed to Matronyshka for guidance. And when I turned the corner I practically ran head-on into my future wife. As it turns out, she was just returning from Pokrov Convent [where the relics of St. Matrona are], where she was praying about the same thing that I was praying about.

Well in fact Blessed Matrona is my favorite and dearest saint!

Ekaternia Doroshenkova

“ Dry roses sprouted fresh growth.”

Hello, brothers and sisters. I would like to tell you the story of a miracle. My mother told me about it. In 2012, a particle of the relics of St. Matrona of Moscow was brought to us in Krasnoyarsk [Siberia]. People waited in line for several hours in order to venerate her relics. While standing in line my mother heard this story from a nurse who worked in the oncology ward. This nurse has venerated St. Matrona for a long time, prays to her, and has been to her reliquary in the Moscow Pokrov Convent several times.

At the convent they gave her some dry roses that were blessed on the relics of the saint, and she brought these to the dying woman. In the train (it takes four whole days to travel to us by train) a miracle happened: Those dry rose began to sprout fresh growth. And when she arrived home and gave the roses to the patient, she was healed.

Wondrous are Thy works, O Lord! Holy Blessed Matronushka, pray to Christ for us!

Ekaterina Doroshenkova

“ I immediately understood that this money was brought help you!”

I would like to share another little miracle of my own.

In 2010, after a long interval, I had the opportunity to finish the last year of the university. They were letting me finish only for money. With God’s help I finished the first semester. I borrowed money from my employer with a year’s postponement of repay. I wanted to take out a bank loan for the second and last semester. But two different banks denied me credit.

I had no one to count on for help, because my parents live very modestly.

In just a few days a colleague at work (with whom I was not even close friends, but she knew about my situation with the tuition), brought me the sufficient amount on loan.

As it turns out, her mother had the day before brought her this money, which she had saved up just for her. She didn’t need the money at the moment, and there was nothing to spend it on. She said, “I immediately understood that this money was brought to help you!”

This is how Blessed Matrona helped me through kind people. I received very obvious help through her prayers throughout that school year.

Blessed Matrona, pray to Christ God for us!

Tatiana Ketova

“ My pain went away in literally just a few minutes.”

Not long ago, Matronyshka helped me: My relative went on a pilgrimage to Matushka Matronushka and brought us blessed oil as a gift. I had baked pies in the oven for the children when they arrived and in the process burned my finger on the hot baking pan. A wide, white strip appeared immediately. In a panic, I didn’t know what to use on it—a raw potato, cold water, butter, oil all passed through my mind…

But I had read contrary opinions about all of these cures at one time. Then a precise thought came into my mind: “oil from Matronushka”. I applied the oil to the burn with prayer, stood a few minutes before the icons, prayed some more (I asked that at least to take the pain away, because I had to go to work that evening, and I worked in rubber gloves with water).

After these few minutes the pain had gone away completely. I finished baking the pies, went to work, and redid various things; the burned area quickly turned red, and the expected large boils did not appear. It all went away calmly and unnoticeably thanks to Matronushka.
