Jeffrey Foucault is a seasoned musician and performer with what I would call a light-to-medium country touch. His repertoire includes mostly songs he has written himself. His ensemble is comprised of a suitcase drummer, a bass player, and Jeff and they make great music together. Jeff is also a great fingerstyle guitarist but also handles an electric very well. Very much worth a listen.

Jeffrey Foucault always brings 100% and last night in Concord, NH was no exception. No matter what format the show is set up in, i.e. solo, duo, co-headlining with Kris Delmhorst, or a full band, he has a way of drawing the audience in with his storytelling, setting up the heart touching songwriting and journey he his craft takes his audience on. Was great to see Billy behind the kit again and the magic was woven throughout evening. After 20yrs of songs along with a plethora of songs to draw from, I was captivated all night and was left wanting more. Which is what a troubadour is suppose to do. I would be there anytime Jeffrey and company are in town. Looking forward to the next time.
Unfortunately, this gig was cancelled. :-(

Live Review: Jeffrey Foucault & Eric Heywood + Dietrich Strause, The Railway, Winchester, 10th November 2022
A search of the Americana UK website archives reveals an article announcing a string of Jeffrey Foucault UK dates for April 2020. I don’t need to tell you what happened to those. Almost exactly two years after I should have seen him play in London, I caught Foucault’s set at Water Rats with his wife Kris Delmhorst, a beautiful, low-key set with the two of them sharing a single condenser mic for vocals and guitars, and, in a magical moment, their daughter joining on harmony vocals for a couple of songs.
Jeffrey is now back with pedal steel maestro Eric Heywood (Son Volt, Pretenders and many more) and touring the UK until 24 November. Support comes from Boston-based Dietrich Strause who wraps an expressive voice with shades of Jackson Browne around his evocative, meditative lyrics and plays a woodily warm Martin so vintage that it long ago lost its logo from the headstock.
Foucault and Heywood began the tour with an intimate set for around 30 punters in High Wycombe, courtesy of Paul Kemp and his very appropriately named Kingsmead House Concerts. There were some fascinating contrasts between that quietly charming show and their first ‘rockbox’ gig at Winchester’s Railway Inn where the walls reverberated to the metallic tang of Foucault’s tricone, soothed and haunted by Heywood’s pedal steel: not so much face-melting as soul-dissolving. Time and again, you could see Jeffrey shaking his head in wonder at the sounds his friend coaxed from it. And one of the great joys of a show like this is seeing two virtuosos playing off each other and revelling in it; finding new paths through old songs and possible paths through new songs – one Jeffrey had taught Eric half an hour before showtime at High Wycombe. They’re still experimenting with keys and arrangements.
The sounds that Foucault shakes from the world with his guitar and extraordinarily rich, warm and versatile voice are remarkable. There is the delicate folk familiar from his early albums, but more often the songs lean towards blues, including a chilling version of the traditional murder ballad ‘ Pretty Polly ’. Equally distinctive is the poetry in Foucault’s lyrics, from the pin-sharp description of ‘the lights on the big trucks … like gun camera tracers’ to a verse such as this: ‘When you laugh / I feel like crying / When you cry / I don’t know what to do’; devastating in its truth and simplicity. One of several new songs, ‘ Solo Medelo ’, is a meditation on life on the road without his long-time drummer and close friend Billy Conway who died nearly two years ago, a gentle play on words around the loneliness of a solo beer, solo coffee, solo [show] in Milwaukee, and feeling ‘so low’, floored by grief, that he is left to wonder whether it’s time to walk away. But it’s not a slow, deliberate ballad; the syncopated rhythm of this relaxed strummer sets off the poignancy of the lyric; typically unpredictable, Foucault swerves left when you expect him to go right.
Another new song, ‘ When the Curtain Comes Down ’, reflects on the legacy and longevity of someone who has chosen a life writing, recording and playing music; it is a stark facing-down of what we leave behind; for someone like Foucault, the sound of a ghost in a speaker. But for many of us who love music, those ghosts – so many gone now, so many going – are spirits that have transformed us.
There are rock’n’roll shows that make you feel glad to be alive. And then there are those shows that also make you contemplate what it means to be alive. Foucault has many sounds still to shake from this broken, precious world. There’s a new album next year. I can’t wait to hear more.

Jeffrey Foucault + Pieta Brown Gamblers All Tour Starts This Weekend
GAMBLERS ALL — On tour together for the first time and sharing an all-star band, Pieta Brown (“…Seductive simplicity and lyrical grace” — BBC) and Jeffrey Foucault (“…Contemporary and timeless” — New York Times), come together for a rare and special split-bill, an onstage exploration and real-time exchange highlighting two of the most distinct voices and catalogs in American music.
Featuring John Convertino (Calexico) on drums, Jeremy Moses Curtis (Booker T) on bass, Erik Koskinen (Low) on electric guitar, and Eric Heywood (Pretenders) on pedal steel, GAMBLERS ALL braids together the strands of Brown's and Foucault's two decades on the road and in the studio, for a kind of moveable feast. PIETA BROWN
The daughter of two preacher's kids, Pieta Brown's early upbringing in Iowa was in a rural outpost with no furnace, running water, or TV. There, she was exposed to traditional and rural folk music through her father, Greg Brown, the now beloved Midwestern folk singer.
Later, while living with her mother in Birmingham, Alabama during her formative years, Pieta drew on and expanded these influences and began writing poems and composing instrumental songs on piano. By the time she left home at 18 she had lived in at least 19 different houses and apartments between Iowa and Alabama.
In her early 20's, after experiencing what she describes as "the songs calling,” Pieta started experimenting with the banjo and eventually picked up a 1930's Maybell arch-top guitar during a visit to her father's place and never looked back. Emerging from a disjointed and distinctly 'bohemian' upbringing, Pieta began performing live and making independent recordings soon after teaching herself how to play guitar. "I grew up around a lot of musicians and artists living on the fringe, and have always felt most at home among them," Pieta says.
Continually revealing new layers as both a songwriter and performer, Pieta is being recognized as one of modern Americana's true gems. In recent years Pieta has released multiple highly critically acclaimed albums, with much attention being paid not only to her distinct sound and style, but also the power of her singing and songwriting, including fan favorite Paradise Outlaw (2014 Red House, which Bon Iver master mind, Justin Vernon, called his “favorite recording made at our studio.”)
Pieta has toured North America with Mark Knopfler, and toured various regions of the U.S., Australia and Canada with John Prine, Amos Lee, Brandi Carlisle, JJ Cale, Ani Difranco, Mavis Staples, and Calexico among others. She has co-written songs with and made recent guest appearances on albums by Calexico, Amos Lee, and Iris Dement, whose latest masterpiece Workin' On A World (2023) Pieta co-produced.
Pieta's songs and music have been heard in various TV Shows and indie films including Everything Will Be Fine (Wim Wenders). With the release of her most recent album Freeway (September 2019, Righteous Babe) co-produced by Bon Iver drummer, S. Carey, followed by multiple experimental collaborations since with various artists including JT Bates, S.Carey, and Howe Gelb & The Colorist Orchestra, as well as a new instrumental based side-project she calls Sylvee & The Sea, Pieta's music and artistry continue to rise.
JEFFREY FOUCAULT
“I grew up in Wisconsin. My Dad wore a tie to work and played a knock-off Gibson with a chunk of the headstock missing where he'd backed over it with the car. Mom sang along. I knew all my Grandparents well into my thirties, and both my Great Grandmas. Winter Sundays were for church or ice-fishing, and summers we hauled an old travel trailer up to the north woods. School was a drag, and I mostly drew pictures. When I was 11 I bought a cassette copy of Little Richard's Greatest Hits. At 17 I learned to play all the songs on John Prine's 1971 debut in my room with the door locked and subway posters of British New Wave bands looking morbidly on. At 19 I stole a copy of Townes Van Zandt's ‘Live & Obscure'. At 24 I made a record and start traveling around the country. I have two older brothers. They don't sing but they both fish.”
In two decades on the road Jeffrey Foucault has become one of the most striking voices in American music, refining a sound instantly recognizable for its simplicity and emotional power, a Midwestern amalgam of blues, country, rock'n'roll, and folk. He's built a brick-and-mortar international touring career on multiple studio albums, countless miles, and general critical acclaim, being lauded for “Stark, literate songs that are as wide open as the landscape of his native Midwest” (The New Yorker), and described as “Quietly brilliant” (The Irish Times), while catching the ear of everyone from Van Dyke Parks to Greil Marcus, to Don Henley, who regularly covers Foucault in his live set. His eighth collection of original songs, THE UNIVERSAL FIRE, will be released in 2024.
